Search

It is widely accepted that the surface potential of the lunar dayside is "on average" several to 10 V positive due to photoelectron emission in addition to the solar wind plasma precipitation. Recent studies, however, have shown that an insulating and rough regolith layer tends to make positive and negative charges separated and irregularly distributed on sub-Debye-length scales. The local charge separation then gives rise to an intense and structured electrostatic field. Such micro-scale electrostatic structures lie in the innermost part of the photoelectron sheath and may contribute to the mobilization of the charged dust particles. Since the electrostatic structures can take different states depending on the topography of the lunar surface, it is necessary to update the research approach. We have launched a research group to develop an integrated assessment framework that includes theoretical and numerical modeling, on-orbit observations, ground-based testing, and the development of charging measurement instruments, with the ultimate goal of comprehensively understanding the surface charging processes on the Moon.

The strength distributions of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in 142,146-150Nd have been determined via inelastic alpha-particle scattering with the Grand Raiden (GR) Spectrometer at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Japan. In the deformed nuclei 146-150Nd, the ISGMR strength distributions exhibit a splitting into two components, while the nearly spherical nucleus 142Nd displays a single peak in the ISGMR strength distribution. A noteworthy achievement in this study is the first-time detection of overtones in the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) strength distributions within Nd isotopes at an excitation energy around 25 MeV obtained through Multipole Decomposition Analysis (MDA)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Measurements of circular polarization of $\gamma$-ray emitted from neutron capture reactions provide valuable information for nuclear physics studies. The spin and parity of excited states can be determined by measuring the circular polarization from polarized neutron capture reactions. Furthermore, the $\gamma$-ray circular polarization in a neutron capture resonance is crucial for studying the enhancement effect of parity nonconservation in compound nuclei. The $\gamma$-ray circular polarization can be measured using a polarimeter based on magnetic Compton scattering. A polarimeter was constructed, and its performance indicators were evaluated using a circularly polarized $\gamma$-ray beam. In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nnLambda state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022), B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data was also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Lambda/Sigma^0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q^2~0.5 (GeV/c)^2, W=2.14 GeV, and theta_{gamma K}^{c.m.}~8 deg. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data is scarce and a low-Q^2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q^2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Lambda/Sigma^0 hyperon electroproduction. Recent high-precision $e^+e^-\to c\bar{c}$ data from the BESIII and Belle are highly useful to understand the vector charmonium pole structure and puzzling lineshapes due to the exotic hadron candidates $Y$. We thus conduct a global coupled-channel analysis of most of the available data (9 two-body, 9 three-body, and 1 four-body final states) in $\sqrt{s}=3.75-4.7$ GeV. Not only cross sections but also invariant mass distributions of subsystems are fitted. Our model includes dozens of (quasi) two-body states that nonperturbatively couple with each other through bare charmonium excitations and particle-exchange mechanisms required by the three-body unitarity. The amplitudes obtained from the fits are analytically continued to vector charmonium and $Z_c$ poles. We do not find a $\psi(4160)$ pole that has been considered well-established. Instead, we find two poles of $\sim 4230$ MeV; $\psi(4230)$ with $\Gamma= 36$ MeV and a broader one with $\Gamma= 114$ MeV. Two $Z_c$ poles are found as virtual states $\sim 40$ MeV below the $D^*\bar{D}^{(*)}$ thresholds, being consistent with lattice QCD results. Recent BESIII data on radiative $J/\psi$ decays from $\sim 10^{10}$ $J/\psi$ samples should significantly advance our understanding of the controversial nature of $\eta(1405/1475)$. This motivates us to develop a three-body unitary coupled-channel model for radiative $J/\psi$ decays to three-meson final states of any partial wave ($J^{PC}$). Basic building blocks of the model are bare resonance states such as $\eta(1405/1475)$ and $f_1(1420)$, and $\pi K$, $K\bar{K}$, and $\pi\eta$ two-body interactions that generate resonances such as $K^*(892)$, $K^*_0(700)$, and $a_0(980)$. This model reasonably fits $K_SK_S\pi^0$ Dalitz plot pseudo data generated from the BESIII's $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$ amplitude for $J/\psi\to\gamma K_SK_S\pi^0$. The experimental branching ratios of $\eta(1405/1475)\to\eta\pi\pi$ and $\eta(1405/1475)\to\gamma\rho$ relative to that of $\eta(1405/1475)\to K\bar{K}\pi$ are simultaneously fitted. Our $0^{-+}$ amplitude is analytically continued to find three poles, two of which correspond to $\eta(1405)$ on different Riemann sheets of the $K^*\bar{K}$ channel, and the third one for $\eta(1475)$. This is the first pole determination of $\eta(1405/1475)$ and, furthermore, the first-ever pole determination from analyzing experimental Dalitz plot distributions with a manifestly three-body unitary coupled-channel framework. Process-dependent $\eta\pi\pi$, $\gamma\pi^+\pi^-$, and $\pi\pi\pi$ lineshapes of $J/\psi\to\gamma(0^{-+})\to \gamma(\eta\pi\pi)$, $\gamma(\gamma\rho)$, and $\gamma(\pi\pi\pi)$ are predicted, and are in reasonable agreement with data. Several $X$ and $Z_{cs}$ exotic hadrons were claimed in the LHCb's amplitude analysis on $B^+\to J/\psi \phi K^+$. The data shows that all the peaks and also dips in the spectra are located at thresholds of seemingly relevant meson-meson channels. While the LHCb analysis fitted the peaks with Breit-Wigner resonances, threshold kinematical cusps might be the cause of such structures. We thus analyze the LHCb data considering the threshold cusps. Our model is simultaneously fitted to $J/\psi \phi$, $J/\psi K^+$, and $K^+\phi$ invariant mass distributions. The threshold cusps fit well all the $X$, $Z_{cs}$, and dip structures. Our analysis indicates that spin-parity of the $X(4274)$ and $X(4500)$ structures are $0^-$ and $1^-$, respectively. This is different from the LHCb's spin-parity assignments ($1^+$ and $0^+$). The number of fitting parameters can be significantly reduced by considering the relevant threshold cusps. Our analysis shows that $D_s^{(*)}\bar{D}^{*}$ scattering lengths are consistent with zero. This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. The recent BESIII data on $J/\psi\to\gamma(K_SK_S\pi^0)$, which is significantly more precise than earlier $\eta(1405/1475)$-related data, enables quantitative discussions on $\eta(1405/1475)$ at the previously unreachable level. We conduct a three-body unitary coupled-channel analysis of experimental Monte-Carlo outputs for radiative $J/\psi$ decays via $\eta(1405/1475)$: $K_SK_S\pi^0$ Dalitz plot distributions from the BESIII, and branching ratios of $\gamma(\eta\pi^+\pi^-)$ and $\gamma(\gamma\pi^+\pi^-)$ final states relative to that of $\gamma(K\bar{K}\pi)$. Our model systematically considers (multi-)loop diagrams and an associated triangle singularity, which is critical in making excellent predictions on $\eta(1405/1475)\to \pi\pi\pi$ lineshapes and branching ratios. The $\eta(1405/1475)$ pole locations are revealed for the first time. Two poles for $\eta(1405)$ are found on different Riemann sheets of the $K^*\bar{K}$ channel, while one pole for $\eta(1475)$. The $\eta(1405/1475)$ states are described with two bare states dressed by continuum states. The lower bare state would be an excited $\eta^\prime$, while the higher one could be an excited $\eta^{(\prime)}$, hybrid, glueball, or their mixture. A high-precision hypernuclear experiment has been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) to determine the hypertriton {\Lambda} binding energy via decay-pion spectroscopy. A key element of this measurement is an accurate calibration of the magnetic spectrometers with the MAMI beam. For such an absolute calibration with small statistical and systematic uncertainties the undulator light interference method will be applied. Various WIMP dark matter searches using the full data set of XMASS-I, a single-phase liquid xenon detector, are reported in this paper. Stable XMASS-I data taking accumulated a total live time of 1590.9 days between November 20, 2013 and February 1, 2019 with an analysis threshold of ${\rm 1.0\,keV_{ee}}$. In the latter half of data taking a lower analysis threshold of ${\rm 0.5\,keV_{ee}}$ was also available through a new low threshold trigger. Searching for a WIMP signal in the detector's 97~kg fiducial volume yielded a limit on the WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section of ${\rm 1.4\times 10^{-44}\, cm^{2}}$ for a ${\rm 60\,GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP at the 90$\%$ confidence level. We also searched for WIMP induced annual modulation signatures in the detector's whole target volume, containing 832~kg of liquid xenon. For nuclear recoils of a ${\rm 8\,GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP this analysis yielded a 90\% CL cross section limit of ${\rm 2.3\times 10^{-42}\, cm^{2}}$. At a WIMP mass of ${\rm 0.5\, GeV/c^{2}}$ the Migdal effect and Bremsstrahlung signatures were evaluated and lead to 90\% CL cross section limits of ${\rm 1.4\times 10^{-35}\, cm^{2}}$ and ${\rm 1.1\times 10^{-33}\, cm^{2}}$ respectively.

Over the last three decades, Hall C has been a key contributor to progress in the understanding of hadron structure and interactions. An outline of a potential future Hall C physics program focused on precision measurements of small cross sections is presented. A detailed overview of this unique facility, whose flexible configuration allows many opportunities for new experimental equipment that help address a wide range of questions in hadronic physics, is included as well., Comment: 67 pages, 20 figures

First hidden-charm pentaquark candidate with strangeness, $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$, was recently discovered in $B^-\to J/\psi\Lambda\bar{p}$ by the LHCb Collaboration. $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ shows up as a bump at the $\Xi_c\bar{D}$ threshold in the $J/\psi\Lambda$ invariant mass ($M_{J/\psi\Lambda}$) distribution. The $M_{J/\psi\Lambda}$ distribution also shows a large fluctuation at the $\Lambda_c\bar{D}_s$ threshold, hinting the existence of a possible $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$. In this work, we determine the $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ and $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$ pole positions for the first time. For this purpose, we fit a $B^-\to J/\psi\Lambda\bar{p}$ model to the $M_{J/\psi\Lambda}$, $M_{J/\psi\bar{p}}$, $M_{\Lambda\bar{p}}$, and $\cos\theta_{K^*}$ distributions from the LHCb simultaneously; $\chi^2/{\rm ndf}\sim 1.21$. Then we extract $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda$ poles from a unitary $\Xi_c\bar{D}$-$\Lambda_c\bar{D}_s$ coupled-channel scattering amplitude built in the model. In our default fit, the $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ pole is found at $( 4338.2\pm 1.4)-( 1.9\pm 0.5 )\,i$ MeV while the $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$ pole at $4254.7\pm 0.4$ MeV. The $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ and $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4255)$ are mostly $\Xi_c \bar{D}$ bound and $\Lambda_c\bar{D}_s$ virtual states, respectively. Through our analysis, the data disfavors a hypothesis of $P_{\psi s}^\Lambda(4338)$ as merely a kinematical effect. A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using $\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$ of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes $\gamma$-rays including the signal and $\beta$-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ years at 90$\%$ confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe.

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. We study the problem of parameter estimation for discretely observed stochastic differential equations driven by small fractional noise. Under some conditions, we obtain strong consistency and rate of convergence of the least square estimator(LSE) when small dispersion coefficient converges to 0 and sample size converges to infty.

A database is under construction to provide a complete collection of published basic properties of hypernuclei such as {\Lambda} binding energies, lifetimes, or excitation energies. From these values, averages with related errors are computed in a systematic way. For each property, the overall experimental situation is depicted in form of an ideogram showing the combined probability density function of the measurements. The database is accessible via a dynamic website at https://hypernuclei.kph.uni-mainz.de with an user interface offering customizable visualizations, selections, or unit conversions. Charge-changing cross sections $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ values on $^{12}$C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed model systematically reproduces $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ data without phenomenological corrections, and can also explain experimental $\sigma_\mathrm{CC}$ values obtained in other energy regions., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The small binding energy of the hypertrition leads to predictions of non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as $nn\Lambda$. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound $nn\Lambda$ state. The $nn\Lambda$ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction at Jefferson Lab's experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the $nn\Lambda$-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the $^3{\rm{H}}(\gamma^{*},K^+)\textrm{X}$ reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well ($|\delta p/p| < 4\%$), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the $nn\Lambda$ state were obtained to be $21$ and $31~\rm{nb/sr}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level when theoretical predictions of $(-B_{\Lambda}, \Gamma) = (0.25,0.8)$ and $(0.55, 4.7)$ MeV, respectively, were assumed. The recent LHCb data on $B_s^0\to J/\psi p\bar{p}$ revealed a new pentaquark-like $P_c(4337)^+$ structure, while finding no evidence for $P_c(4312)^+$ discovered earlier in $\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi p K^-$. Though puzzling, the data actually offer an important hint to understand the nature of the pentaquark candidates. We develop a model to analyze the $B_s^0\to J/\psi p\bar{p}$ data. We find that a $\Sigma_c\bar{D}$ one-loop mechanism causes a threshold cusp that fits well the $P_c(4337)^+$ peak. Also, the $\Sigma_c\bar{D}$ and $\Lambda_c\bar{D}^{*}$ threshold cusps interfere with each other to reproduce an oscillating behavior in the proton helicity angle distribution. These results combined with our earlier analysis on $\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi p K^-$ indicate that $P_c(4312)^+$ and $P_c(4337)^+$ are created by different interference patterns between the $\Sigma_c\bar{D}$ and $\Lambda_c\bar{D}^{*}$ (anomalous) threshold cusps. The proposed scenario consistently explains why the $P_c(4312)^+$ and $P_c(4337)^+$ peaks appear in $\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi p K^-$ and $B_s^0\to J/\psi p\bar{p}$, respectively, but not vice versa or both., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; (v2) published version, title changed, one paragraph added in Sec. 2, references added

Electric quadrupolar state in a frustrated quantum magnet $\rm Tb_{2+\it \delta}Ti_{2-\it \delta}O_7$ has been studied by means of ultrasonic and magnetostriction measurements. A single crystal showed elastic anomaly at about 0.4 K, manifesting a long-range quadrupole ordering. By investigating anisotropy of the magnetoelastic responses, we found a crossover temperature for the strongly correlated quadrupole state, below which the experimental data of elastic constant and magnetostriction become qualitatively different from their calculations based on a single-ion model. We suppose that relatively high onset temperature of the quadrupole correlation compared with the transition temperature is ascribed to the geometrical frustration effect, and this correlated state seems to be responsible for the unusual properties in the paramagentic state of $\rm Tb_2Ti_2O_7$., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We measured the complex conductivity, $\sigma$, of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ ($x=0-0.5$) films in the superconducting state which show a drastic increase of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\textrm{c}$, when the nematic order disappears. Since the magnetic penetration depth, $\lambda$ $(>$ 400 nm), of Fe(Se,Te) is longer than the typical thickness of the film ($\sim$100 nm), we combined the coplanar waveguide resonator and cavity perturbation techniques to evaluate both the real and imaginary parts of $\sigma$. Films with a nematic order showed a qualitatively different temperature dependence in penetration depth and quasiparticle scattering time when compared with those without nematic order, suggesting that nematic order influences the superconducting gap structure. Conversely, the proportionality between superfluid density, $n_\textrm{s}$ ($\propto\lambda^{-2}$), and $T_\textrm{c}$ was observed irrespective of the presence or absence of nematic order. This result indicates that the amount of superfluid has a stronger impact on the $T_\textrm{c}$ of Fe(Se,Te) than the presence or absence of nematic order. Combining these results with band dispersions calculated using density functional theory, we propose that the change of the Fermi surface associated with nematicity is the primary factor influencing the change of $T_\textrm{c}$ and the superconducting gap structure in Fe(Se,Te)., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and $\rm ^3He$ analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient $C_{y,y}$ for $p$-$\rm ^3He$ elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with $\Delta$-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the $\rm ^3 He$ binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the $NN$ potentials and rather small $\Delta$-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that $p$-$\rm ^3He$ scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We present acoustic signatures of the electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the honeycomb-layer compound UNi$_4$B. The transverse ultrasonic mode $C_{66}$ shows softening below 30 K both in the paramagnetic phase and antiferromagnetic phases down to $\sim0.33$ K. Furthermore, we traced magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams up to 30 T and observed a highly anisotropic elastic response within the honeycomb layer. These observations strongly suggest that $\Gamma_6$(E$_{\rm 2g}$) electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in localized $5f^2$ ($J = 4$) states are playing an important role in the magnetic toroidal dipole order and magnetic-field-induced phases of UNi$_4$B, and evidence some of the U ions remain in the paramagnetic state even if the system undergoes magnetic toroidal ordering., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Materials (11 pages, 9 figures)

Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at Jefferson Laboratory's Hall C for the neutron rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_{\Lambda}^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~2})=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~3})=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~3})$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34GHz to 448GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89-224GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166-448GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100mK. LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. JAXA selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with its expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA's H3 rocket. LiteBIRD plans to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky with unprecedented precision. Its main scientific objective is to carry out a definitive search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with an insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. To this end, LiteBIRD will perform full-sky surveys for three years at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2 for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with three telescopes, to achieve a total sensitivity of 2.16 micro K-arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5 deg. at 100GHz. LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. We performed a search for event bursts in the XMASS-I detector associated with 11 gravitational-wave events detected during LIGO/Virgo's O1 and O2 periods. Simple and loose cuts were applied to the data collected in the full 832 kg xenon volume around the detection time of each gravitational-wave event. The data were divided into four energy regions ranging from keV to MeV. Without assuming any particular burst models, we looked for event bursts in sliding windows with various time width from 0.02 to 10 s. The search was conducted in a time window between $-$400 and $+$10,000 s from each gravitational-wave event. For the binary neutron star merger GW170817, no significant event burst was observed in the XMASS-I detector and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on neutrino fluence for the sum of all the neutrino flavors via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The obtained upper limit was (1.3-2.1)$\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum with average neutrino energy of 20 MeV. The neutrino fluence limits for mono-energetic neutrinos in the energy range between 14 and 100 MeV were also calculated. Among the other 10 gravitational wave events detected as the binary black hole mergers, a burst candidate with a 3.0$\sigma$ significance was found at 1801.95-1803.95 s in the analysis for GW151012. However, no significant deviation from the background in the reconstructed energy and position distributions was found. Considering the additional look-elsewhere effect of analyzing the 11 GW events, the significance of finding such a burst candidate associated with any of them is 2.1$\sigma$., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

We have searched for exotic neutrino-electron interactions that could be produced by a neutrino millicharge, by a neutrino magnetic moment, or by dark photons using solar neutrinos in the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. We observed no significant signals in 711 days of data. We obtain an upper limit for neutrino millicharge of 5.4$\times$10$^{-12} e$ at 90\% confidence level assuming all three species of neutrino have common millicharge. We also set flavor dependent limits assuming the respective neutrino flavor is the only one carrying a millicharge, $7.3 \times 10^{-12} e$ for $\nu_e$, $1.1 \times 10^{-11} e$ for $\nu_{\mu}$, and $1.1 \times 10^{-11} e$ for $\nu_{\tau}$. These limits are the most stringent yet obtained from direct measurements. We also obtain an upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment of 1.8$\times$10$^{-10}$ Bohr magnetons. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the coupling constant of dark photons in the $U(1)_{B-L}$ model of 1.3$\times$10$^{-6}$ if the dark photon mass is 1$\times 10^{-3}$ MeV$/c^{2}$, and 8.8$\times$10$^{-5}$ if it is 10 MeV$/c^{2}$.

"Why are the tin isotopes soft?" has remained, for the past decade, an open problem in nuclear structure physics: models which reproduce the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the "doubly-closed shell" nuclei, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb, overestimate the ISGMR energies of the open-shell tin and cadmium nuclei, by as much as 1 MeV. In an effort to shed some light onto this problem, we present results of detailed studies of the ISGMR in the molybdenum nuclei, with the goal of elucidating where--and how--the softness manifests itself between $^{90}$Zr and the cadmium and tin isotopes. The experiment was conducted using the $^{94,96,98,100}$Mo($\alpha,\alpha^\prime$) reaction at $E_\alpha = 386$ MeV. A comparison of the results with relativistic, self-consistent Random-Phase Approximation calculations indicates that the ISGMR response begins to show softness in the molybdenum isotopes beginning with $A=92$., Comment: Accepted for publication to Physics Letters B

Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite CMB polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA's H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34GHz and 448GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy's foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5Kelvin for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun-Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for three years. An international collaboration between Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. Interaction cross sections for $^{42\textrm{-}51}$Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number $N=28$. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and the Mean-Field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond $N=28$ results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The determination of the Argonne National Laboratory-Osaka University (ANL-Osaka) Partial-Wave Amplitudes (PWA) of $\pi N$ and $\gamma N$ Reactions is reviewed. This write-up document is a summary of International workshop on the project for the extended hadron experimental facility which was held from March 26 to 28, 2018 at KEK Tokai Campus. This document is a collection of Letter Of Intents (LOIs) related to the proposed beam lines in the extended hadron experimental facility at J-PARC.

To study the mutual interaction between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic order through an interface, we fabricate Kondo superlattices consisting of alternating layers of heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ and antiferromagnetic (AFM) heavy-fermion metal CeIn$_3$. The strength of the AFM fluctuations is tuned by applying hydrostatic pressure to CeCoIn$_5(m)$/CeIn$_3(n)$ superlattices with $m$ and $n$ unit-cell-thick layers of CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$, respectively. Superconductivity in CeCoIn$_5$ and AFM order in CeIn$_3$ coexist in spatially separated layers. At ambient pressure, N\'{e}el temperature $T_N$ of the CeIn$_3$ block layers (BLs) of CeCoIn$_5$(7)/CeIn$_3(n)$ shows little dependence on $n$, in contrast to CeIn$_3(n)$/LaIn$_3$(4) superlattices where $T_N$ is strongly suppressed with decreasing $n$. This suggests that each CeIn$_3$ BL is magnetically coupled by the RKKY interaction through the adjacent CeCoIn$_5$ BL and a 3D magnetic state is formed. With applying pressure to CeCoIn$_5$(7)/CeIn$_3$(13), $T_N$ of the CeIn$_3$ BLs is suppressed up to 2.4 GPa, showing a similar pressure dependence as CeIn$_3$ single crystals. An analysis of upper critical field reveals that the superconductivity in the CeCoIn$_5$ BLs is barely influenced by the AFM fluctuations in the CeIn$_3$ BLs, even when the CeIn$_3$ BLs are in the vicinity of the AFM quantum critical point. This is in stark contrast to CeCoIn$_5$/CeRhIn$_5$ superlattice where the superconductivity in the CeCoIn$_5$ BLs is profoundly affected by AFM fluctuations in the CeRhIn$_5$ BLs. The present results show that although AFM fluctuations are injected into the CeCoIn$_5$ BLs from the CeIn$_3$ BLs through the interface, they barely affect the force which binds superconducting electron pairs. These results demonstrate that 2D AFM fluctuations are essentially important for the pairing interactions in CeCoIn$_5$., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Photoproduction of the $\omega$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{\omega p}$ and effective range $r_{\omega p}$ between the $\omega$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{\omega p} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{\omega p}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{\omega p}$ and $r_{\omega p}$ are determined separately for the first time. This paper demonstrates the anisotropic response of quantum critical fluctuations with respect to the direction of the magnetic field $B$ in Ni-doped CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the magnetization $M$ and specific heat $C$. The results show that $M/B$ at $B=0.1\ {\rm T}$ for both the tetragonal $c$ and $a$ directions exhibits $T^{-\eta}$ dependencies, and that $C/T$ at $B=0$ follows a $-\ln T$ function, which are the characteristics of non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behaviors. For $B\,||\,c$, both the $M/B\propto T^{-\eta}$ and $C/T \propto -\ln T$ dependencies change into nearly temperature-constant behaviors by increasing $B$, indicating a crossover from the NFL state to the Fermi-liquid state. For $B\,||\,a$, however, the NFL behavior in $C/T$ persists up to $B=7\ {\rm T}$, whereas $M/B$ exhibits temperature-independent behavior for $B\ge 1\ {\rm T}$. These contrasting characteristics in $M/B$ and $C/T$ reflect the anisotropic nature of quantum critical fluctuations; the $c$-axis spin component significantly contributes to the quantum critical fluctuations. We compare this anisotropic behavior of the spin fluctuations to superconducting properties in pure CeCoIn$_5$, especially to the anisotropy in the upper critical field and the Ising-like characteristics in the spin resonance excitation, and suggest a close relationship between them., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. We propose a new experiment for decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at electron- and proton-beam facilities, using the recoil distance technique for separation of produced hypernuclei and a magnetic spectrometer for precise measurement of the decay pion momentum. Low-pressure MWPCs are advocated for low-energy recoil detection as they provide position and time information and are highly insensitive to gamma-ray and electron background. The position and timing characteristics of such a recoil detector were studied using ~5 MeV {\alpha}-particles. By using the present proposed approach the rate of the detected hypernuclei can be increased by one-to-two orders of magnitude compared to a recent experiment carried out at the MAMI electron accelerator in Mainz. The possibility of realizing a high luminosity decay pion spectroscopy experiment with proton beams is also discussed., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures

$Z_c(4430)$ discovered by the Belle and confirmed by the LHCb in $\bar{B}^0\to\psi(2S)K^-\pi^+$ is generally considered to be a charged charmonium-like state that includes minimally two quarks and two antiquarks. $Z_c(4200)$ found in $\bar{B}^0\to J/\psi K^-\pi^+$ by the Belle is also a good candidate of a charged charmonium-like state. We demonstrate that kinematical singularities in triangle loop diagrams induce a resonance-like behavior that can consistently explain the properties (mass, width, and Argand plot) of $Z_c(4430)$ and $Z_c(4200)$ from the experimental analyses. The triangle diagrams include only experimentally well-established hadrons. Applying this idea to $\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi p\pi^-$, we also identify triangle singularities that behave like $Z_c(4200)$, but no triangle diagram is available for $Z_c(4430)$. This is consistent with the LHCb's finding that their description of the $\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi p\pi^-$ data is significantly improved by including a $Z_c(4200)$ contribution while $Z_c(4430)$ seems to hardly contribute. Even though the proposed mechanisms have uncertainty in the absolute strengths which are currently difficult to estimate, they are certainly a compelling alternative to tetraquark-based interpretations of $Z_c(4430)$ and $Z_c(4200)$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; published version; one figure on the cutoff-dependence added
