13. Methods to induce perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in full-Heusler Co2FeSi thin layers in a magnetic tunnel junction structure

Abstract

In this study, to obtain perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) using half-metallic ferromagnets (HMFs), several methods were developed to induce perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in full-Heusler Co2FeSi (CFS) alloy thin layers in an MTJ multilayer composed of a layered CFS/MgO/CFS structure. Oxygen exposure at 2.0 Pa for 10 min after deposition of the bottom CFS layer was effective for obtaining PMA in the CFS layer. One of the reasons for the PMA is the formation of nearly ideal CFS/MgO interfaces due to oxygen exposure before the deposition of the MgO layer. The annealing process was effective for obtaining PMA in the top CFS layer capped with a Pd layer. PMA was clearly observed in the top CFS layer of a Cr(40 nm)/Pd(50 nm)/bottom CFS(0.6 nm)/MgO(2.0 nm)/top CFS(0.6 nm)/Pd(10 nm) multilayer, where the top CFS and Pd thin films were deposited at RT and subsequently annealed at 300{\deg}C. In addition to the continuous layer growth of the films, the crystalline orientation alignment at the top CFS/Pd interface probably attributes to the origin of PMA at the top CFS layer., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Background: Distal pancreatectomy (DP) with lymph node (LN) dissection is the standard procedure for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma of the tail (Pt‐PDAC). However, the optimal surgery including extent of LN dissection is still being debated. The present study investigated the incidence and prognostic impact of LN metastasis on patients suffering from Pt‐PDAC. Patients and method: This multicenter, retrospective study involved 163 patients who underwent DP for resectable Pt‐PDAC at 12 institutions between 2013 and 2017. The frequency of LN metastasis and the effect of LN dissection on Pt‐PDAC prognosis were investigated. Results: There were high incidences of metastases to the LNs along the splenic artery in the patients with Pt‐PDAC (39%). The rate of metastases in the LNs along the common hepatic, left gastric, and celiac arteries were low, and the therapeutic index for these LNs was zero. In pancreatic tail cancer located more distally, there were no metastases to the LNs along the common hepatic artery. Multivariate analysis revealed that tumor size was the only independent factor related to recurrence‐free survival (HR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.33–3.05, p = 0.001). The level of pancreas division and LN dissection along the common hepatic artery did not affect the site of tumor recurrence or recurrence‐free survival. Conclusions: LN dissection along the hepatic artery for Pt‐PDAC has little significance. Distal pancreatic transection may be acceptable in terms of oncological safety, but further examination of short‐term outcomes and preservation of pancreatic function is required. Abstract

Ectopic lymphoid-like structures (ELSs) are often observed in cancer, yet their function is obscure. Although ELSs signify good prognosis in certain malignancies, we found that hepatic ELSs indicated poor prognosis for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We studied an HCC mouse model that displayed abundant ELSs and found that they constituted immunopathological microniches wherein malignant hepatocyte progenitor cells appeared and thrived in a complex cellular and cytokine milieu until gaining self-sufficiency. The egress of progenitor cells and tumor formation were associated with the autocrine production of cytokines previously provided by the niche. ELSs developed via cooperation between the innate immune system and adaptive immune system, an event facilitated by activation of the transcription factor NF-κB and abolished by depletion of T cells. Such aberrant immunological foci might represent new targets for cancer therapy.

Abstract

The authors demonstrated that L21-ordered full-Heusler Co2FeSi (CFS) alloy film with thickness of 100 nm were formed by facing targets sputtering (FTS) method at a substrate temperature TS = 300 deg C. Degrees of L21- and B2- order for the film were 0.37, and 0.96, respectively. Furthermore, full-Heusler CFS alloy thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) induced by MgO-interface magnetic anisotropy were successfully formed by the FTS method. The CFS/MgO stacking layers showed PMA when dCFS was 0.6 nm <= dCFS <= 1.0 nm. The PMA in these structures resulted from the CFS/MgO interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract

CoPt alloy is the appropriate material for the stacking layers owing to strong PMA for Co-rich alloy and controllability of Ku by changing the Co composition. CoPt stacking layers with different alternatively Ku are required. To deposit such stacking layers, the electrodeposition condition has been studied. CoPt layers with various compositions were successfully deposited by adjusting the applied voltage. However, the surface thin film deposited by DC electrodeposition was too rough for spin device fabrication. We conducted pulse electrodeposition and obtained an ultra-thin film with smooth morphology and good magnetic property.
