The objective of this study was to determine the ideal time to harvest by evaluating seeds physiological maturity. Seventeen weekly harvests of fruits and seeds from matrices located in the Brazilian city of Botucatu, SP, were performed from May to September 2001. Fruits size and weight, seed water content and dry matter, and germination and emission of primary root were evaluated. Seeds showed maximum dimension in the thirteenth week of collection, while the highest fruit weight was obtained in the twelfth week of collection. Water content decreased over time. Seeds dry matter showed its highest value in the sixteenth week harvest, while germination percentage showed its highest value between the fourteenth and fifteenth week harvest. The percentage of primary root emission was observed with maximum value in the tenth week harvest. Based on the results, it is concluded that the best Anadenanthera colubrina harvest season occurs between the fourteenth and fifteenth weeks. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2011-01-01 Common bean is an important crop in Brazilian agriculture and phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the most yield limiting factors for this crop, thus plant P-deficiency can hamper the seed physiological quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the productivity and quality of common bean seeds cv. Carioca Precoce cultivated during the rainy season in response to phosphate fertilizer. Six levels of P (0; 30; 60; 90; 120 and 150 kg of P2O5 ha-1), with five replications, were applied in the groove of sowing as triple superphosphate. The seeds yield, at the experimental plot, was determined by the dry weight. Seed quality was evaluated through the following determinations: 100-seed mass, seed moisture content, germination, first counting, moisture content after accelerated aging, germination after accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, seedling emergence in the field and seedlings dry weight. The productivity of beans seeds 'Carioca Precoce' cultivated during the rainy season increased linearly as related to phosphorus rates. The 100-seed mass and the physiological quality of seeds have not changed by increasing of P levels. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2010-01-01 The study had the objective of evaluate the growth of bean cultivar Carioca early cultivated during the rainy season under different doses of phosphorus applied to soil. We adopted the experimental design at random blocks, evaluating six doses of phosphorus (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg P2O5 ha-1), relying in the form of superphosphate triple, with five replicates. Biometric indices were evaluated leaf area (cm2 plant-1) and dry matter (g seedling-1). Physiological indices of crop growth rate (CGR, g m-2 day-1), relative growth rate (RGR, g g-1 day-1), net assimilation rate (NAR, g m-2 day-1), leaf area ratio (LAR, cm2 g-1) and specific leaf area (SLA, cm2 g-1) were obtained through analysis of functional growth. The data from the biometric indices were submitted to analysis of variance, with subsequent construction of regression models. The dry matter and leaf area of bean Carioca Early increase linearly with increasing doses of applied phosphorus in the soil. The dry matter has increased constantly throughout the cycle, and the leaf area indices reach its maximum at 52 days after emergence (DAE). The restriction of phosphorus reduces the Relative Growth Rate at the beginning of the development and lengthen the physiological cycle of bean cultivar Carioca early. The black oat (Avena strigosa Schreber) has been commonly used as green manure, in crop rotation systems under no-tillage, fall-winter crop, and for cattle grazing, hay, and silage. The objective of this work was to evaluate the nutrient concentrations in the flag leaf and grains of black-oat affect by phosphate and potassium fertilization. The experiment was carried out under field conditions on a Rhodic Nitosol, in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Three doses of single superphosphate (0, 40 and 80 kg.ha-1 of P2O5) and three of potassium chloride (0, 20 and 40 kg ha-1 of K2O) were tested as a factorial (3 x 3), in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. The fertilizers were applied in the sowing row. Ammonium sulphate was supplied for all plots (20 kg ha-1 of N applied at sowing and 30 kg.ha-1 after tillering stage). The concentrations of Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in the flag leaf and the P and K concentrations in the grain were increased by phosphate fertilizer application. The potassic fertilization had no effect on the concentrations of nutrients in the flag leaf and grains of black-oat. A aveia-preta (Avena strigosa Schreber) tem sido comumente utilizada para adubação verde, rotação de culturas no sistema de plantio direto, em cultivo no outono-inverno e ainda, para pastejo, fenação e ensilagem. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os teores de macro e micronutrientes da folha bandeira e dos grãos de aveia-preta cv. Comum em função da adubação fosfatada e potássica. O experimento foi realizado em condições de campo, em Nitossolo Vermelho, em Botucatu-SP. Os tratamentos constaram de três doses de superfosfato simples (0, 40 e 80 kg ha-1 de P2O5) e três doses de cloreto de potássio (0, 20 e 40 kg ha-1 de K2O) dispostos em esquema fatorial (3 x 3), sob o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. A adubação foi feita no sulco de semeadura. Em todas as parcelas foi aplicado sulfato de amônio, sendo 20 kg ha-1 de N na semeadura e 30 kg ha-1 em cobertura no final do perfilhamento. Os teores de Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu e Zn da folha bandeira e de P e K dos grãos foram influenciados pela adubação fosfatada. A adubação potássica não influenciou os teores de macro e micronutrientes da folha bandeira e dos grãos em aveia preta.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2005-12-01 Ipê amarelo Tabebuia chrysotricha (Mart. Ex DC.) Standl. is a native forest species that presents heavy and durable wood: it is common to be used for urban arborization. The species is latte secondary and heliophyta. Occurs from Espirito Santo State until Santa Catarina in the Pluvial Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica). The seedling production is hard because their seeds have short longevity after dispersion, and so due to the difficulty to harvest winged seeds that are quickly dispersed by the wind. The present study was carried out to evaluate the physiological maturity of Ipê Amarelo seeds, to establish the best moment to harvest them. The study was to accompany the maturation of 100 fruits in just beginning development, from eleven different trees. Morphological characteristic measures were made weekly, with fruits still on trees, starting from the second week development when fruits presented the following averages: 6.3 cm length, 0.71 cm thickness, and 0.82 cm width. From the sixth week of fruit development we harvest them to proceed the germination test, water content rate, and electric conductivity test. The germination has begun by the seventh week development with 28% of germinated seedlings. The highest germination rate happened by the eighth week development, with 74.5% of germinated seedlings and on the ninth week the rate decrease to 65.5%, when the seeds were already in dispersion. Through the electric conductivity test the highest value obtained was 378.06 μS.g -1.cm -1 on the seventh week development and the lowest one was 183.28 μpS.g -1.cm -1 on eighth week. These results support those obtained in the germination test, because as higher is the electric conductivity of seeds, as higher is their deterioration level. Finally, the study allows concluding that the physiological maturation of ipê amarelo seeds has occurred before dispersion close to the eighth week development when fruits presented the following averages: 22.2 cm length, 1.37 cm width, and 1.05 cm thickness; water content rate was 61.8% and electric conductivity was 183.28 μS.g -1.cm -1. In that moment, the fruits presented greened brown coloration and started to show fissures. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2001-12-01 Two experiments of seed ageing of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden were carried out at laboratory conditions. In the first experiment, two seed lots were classified in two square mesh screens (< 0.84 to ≥ 0.71 mm and < 0.71 mm to ≥ 0.59 mm), submitted to 42 °C and 100% relative humidity, for 0, 8, 12, 24, and 32 hours of stress treatments. Seed germination tests were done with just aged seeds. The results showed that the stress period was not sufficient for ageing the seeds. In the second experiment, the best quality seed lot was separated in the same two sizes. The seeds were submitted under the same stress conditions of the first experiment but for 0, 48, 72, and 96 hours. The germination test was done right after the seeds were taken from the stress conditions, and with stored seeds at dry chamber (2 weeks and 26 months). It was concluded that both seed sizes reached 30% of moisture content under 72 hours of ageing conditions and showed significant germination losses when compared with seeds without ageing (control), as the moist seeds as the stored ones at dry chamber, for both 2 weeks and 26 months. Amarelinho, colhidos aos 35, 45 e 55 dias após a antese, foram divididos em quatro porções e submetidos aos seguintes tratamentos: em metade das porções as sementes foram extraídas e postas a secar em ambiente natural de laboratório e em câmara seca; na outra metade, as sementes permaneceram nos frutos e foram secas nas mesmas condições anteriores. O teor de água das sementes foi determinado logo após as colheitas e antes da realização do teste de germinação, feito quando as sementes encontravam-se secas e em equilíbrio com os ambientes. No teste de germinação foram avaliadas a porcentagem de germinação e a porcentagem de sementes duras. O comportamento fisiológico das sementes sofreu efeitos da interação da idade dos frutos, do método (dentro ou fora do fruto) e da condição (ambiente ou câmara seca) de secagem. Os maiores valores para a porcentagem de germinação - acima de 92% - foram obtidos de sementes de frutos com 55 dias, ao passo que a porcentagem de sementes duras não foi afetada nem pelos métodos nem pelas condições de secagem. A secagem das sementes dentro dos frutos com 35 e 45 dias, quando feita em ambiente, propiciou aumentos nas porcentagens de germinação, tornando-as próximas da obtida aos 55 dias de idade. Fruits of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench.) cv. Amarelinho were harvested at three times: 35, 45 and 55 days after anthesis. Half part of the fruits of each harvest time was shelled and the seeds were dried in natural environment of laboratory or in dry chamber. The other half was dried unshelled in the same two conditions. Water contents of seeds were evaluated at harvest time and before the germination test, that was carried out when the seeds were in hygroscopic equilibrium with the two environments. The physiological quality of seeds was affected by the interaction effects of fruit age, drying method and drying condition. The highest values for percentage of germination were obtained from seeds taken from fruits 55 days old (up to 92%) and the hard seeds percentage was not affected by drying method and drying condition. The seeds from fruits of 35 and 45 days old had the germination percentage increased when dried inside the fruit in natural environment. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 1998-05-01 Estudou-se o efeito do momento de colheita e da calagem sobre os componentes de produção e o rendimento de sementes de amendoim (Arachis hypogaea L.) cv. Botutatu, na estação das águas no período de julho 1991 a fevereiro 1992, no município de São Manuel, SP. O solo foi classificado como Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro, textura média. O delineamento experimental empregado foi o de blocos ao acaso em parcelas subdivididas ('split-plot'), com quatro repetições. As parcelas constituíram-se de ausência (0 t/ha) e presença de calcário dolomítico (1,75 t/ha) e as subparcelas, de nove épocas de colheita realizadas em intervalos semanais, a partir do 87o dia após a semeadura. Os rendimentos de vagens e de sementes comercializáveis, assim como os componentes de produção, não foram afetados significativamente pela aplicação do calcário. A porcentagem de sementes germinadas nas vagens, que aumentou com o decorrer das colheitas, foi sempre menor na presença de calcário. A época de colheita que proporcionou o maior rendimento de sementes foi aos 129 dias após a semeadura, tanto na presença como na ausência de calcário. A field experiment was carried out to study the effects of liming and time of harvesting on peanut cv. Botutatu (Arachis hypogaea L.) seed yield and yield components in the period of July, 1991 to February, 1992, in São Manuel, State of São Paulo. The soil was a Dark Red Latosol (Hapludult, sandy loam), and the experimental design was a subplot replicated four times in completely randomized blocks. Lime levels (0.0 and 1.75 t/ha) were applied in the plots, and the subplots were nine weekly harvests, starting at 87 days after planting (DAP). There was no effect of lime on hulls or seed yield and on peanut yield components. The germination of seeds in hulls was incresead at each harvest and was lower at lime presence. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 1993-04-01 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Foram estudados os efeitos de superfosfato simples, hiperfosfato, yookarin, termofosfato (yoorin) e fostato parcialmente acidulado (FPA), na presença e ausência de calcário, sobre as produções de vagens e sementes, os componentes da produção e a qualidade das sementes de amendoim, cv. Tatu. As doses N - P2O5 - K2O aplicadas foram de 20, 100 e 30 kg/ha, e com a calagem procurou-se elevar a base de saturação (V) para 70%. Foram realizados quatro experimentos, em dois anos agrícolas (87/88, 88/89), em cultivo das águas e da seca, em municípios do Estado de São Paulo. Em 87/88, o termofosfato ocasionou as maiores produções de vagens e sementes, enquanto em 88/89 não se constataram efeitos dos adubos. Em 87/88, a calagem foi benéfica para a produção de vagens para todos os fosfatados, e especificamente para o superfosfato simples e o yookarin na produção de sementes, enquanto em 88/89, o efeito favorável da calagem só foi como residual no cultivo da seca. A calagem apresentou efeitos benéficos sobre maior numero dos componentes de produção do que os adubos fosfatados. A calagem proporcionou também uma melhoria na germinação e ou vigor das sementes produzidas, como efeito imediato. The effects of simple superphosphate, hyperphosfate, yookarin, termophosphate (yoorin) and partly acidulated phosphate, with and without limestone, on pod and seed yield, yield and seed quality of peanut (Arachis hyypogaea L.) cv. Tatu were studied. The limestone was applied to increase the base saturation (V) until 70%; the doses of N - P2O5 - K2O used were 20, 100 and 30 kg/ha. Four experiments were carried out under field conditions, during two years, in the wet and in the dry season crop, in three localities of São Paulo, Brazil. In 1987/88, the thermophosphate produced the highest pod and seed yield, while in 1988/89, the yields were not affected by fertilizers. In 1987/88, the limestone presence resulted in the highest pod yield for all phosphatic fertilizers, while for seed yield liming was benefic only to simple superphosphate and yookarin. In 1988/89, the liming effect was residual. The liming presented more effects on the yield components than the fertilizers. The limestone presence yielded seeds with higher germination and vigor than in absence, as immediate effect. Além de influenciar na produção do feijoeiro, a aplicação deste nutriente pode interferir na composição química das sementes e, conseqüentemente, no seu vigor. Por conseguinte, o vigor pode afetar o potencial de armazenamento do lotes de sementes e seu desempenho no campo, influenciando o estabelecimento e o desenvolvimento da planta subseqüente e, em alguns casos, até a produtividade. Assim, o aumento do teor de P das sementes, além de melhorar o vigor das mesmas, pode suprir o requerimento de P no inicio do ciclo da planta e aumentar o crescimento subseqüente. Neste aspecto, o trabalho desenvolvido teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de fósforo via solo na produtividade, na composição química e na qualidade de sementes de feijoeiro; e ainda, avaliar o desempenho em campo de plantas de feijoeiro provenientes de sementes com diferentes teores de P, em solo com diferentes doses de adubação fosfatada. Foram conduzidos em campo oito experimentos, em duas etapas, sendo a primeira referente a produção das sementes sob diferentes níveis de P aplicados no solo e, a segunda referente a avaliação do desempenho das sementes produzidas. Para a produção de sementes foram utilizados os cultivares de feijão Carioca Precoce e IAC Carioca Tybatã em duas épocas de cultivo (águas e seca), totalizando quatro experimentos. Nestes, utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições e seis tratamentos referentes as doses de P aplicadas no solo (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 e 150kg ha-1 de P2O5) na forma de superfosfato triplo. Foram determinadas a produtividade de sementes, a qualidade fisiológica, os teores de macro e micronutrientes e os teores de proteína e açúcares total e redutor nas sementes... Phosphorus availability is a limiting factor to the agricultural production in large areas of Brazilian soils. Besides influencing the bean plant production P application can interfere in the seed chemical composition and therefore in its vigor. On the other hand vigor can affect seed lot storability and crop performance by its influence on plant establishment and development, thus affecting yields. Increased P content in seeds can enhance its vigor and supply the initial seedling P needs and improve subsequent growth. The research work carried out at the Departamento de Produção Vegetal - Agricultura Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas - UNESP had the objective of evaluating the effects of P fertilization on common bean yield, seed chemical composition, seed quality, and the performance of field grown plants derived from seeds with varying P contents cultivated in soil with several phosphate rates. Experiments were conducted in two phases, the first corresponding to the seed production under varying P rates applied to the soil, and the second (corresponding) to the evaluation of seeds with different P contents. All tests were made with Carioca Precoce and IAC Carioca Tybatã cultivars, cropped during two subsequent growing seasons: rainy (September to December) and dry (January to May) periods. A complete randomized block design with six treatments (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg ha-1 P2O5) as triple super-phosphate was used, being determined: bean yields, seed physiological quality, nutrients in the seeds and total proteins and sugars. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo estudar o teste de envelhecimento acelerado tradicional (com água), utilizando sementes de aveia preta com e sem tratamento fungicida, e o envelhecimento acelerado com solução saturada de cloreto de sódio (NaCl), visando identificar o período de exposição e a temperatura para a classificação dos níveis de vigor de lotes dessas sementes. O estudo foi realizado utilizando cinco lotes de sementes de aveia preta, constituídas de sementes comerciais ou produzidos na Fazenda Experimental Lageado - UNESP - Câmpus de Botucatu. Foram realizados testes para a caracterização da qualidade inicial dos lotes, tais como os de germinação, emergência de plântulas, condutividade elétrica, comprimento de plântulas normais e anormais, massa de 1000 sementes, e o estudo de envelhecimento acelerado tradicional (com água ), com e sem tratamento fungicida, e envelhecimento acelerado com solução saturada de sal (NaCl) por períodos de 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 horas de condicionamento às temperaturas de 40, 43 e 45oC. Os resultados permitiram concluir que o teste de envelhecimento acelerado é adequado para estimar o vigor de sementes de aveia preta. Assim, o teste de envelhecimento acelerado tradicional pode ser conduzido à temperatura de 40oC por 24 ou 48 horas e a 43 ou 45oC por 48 horas; o envelhecimento acelerado com solução saturada de sal a 40, 43 ou 45oC por 24 horas e o envelhecimento acelerado tradicional com sementes tratadas a 40oC por 24 ou 48 horas, a 43oC por 48 horas ou a 45oC por 24 horas de condicionamento. The use of seeds of high quality has great importance in the implantation and establishment of the crop in the field, the seeds vigour can not only affect the establishment, but also influence the growth, development and productivity of the plants. The present work had as its objective to study the traditional of accelerated aging (with water), in black oats seeds with and without fungicid treatment, and the accelerated aging with saturated solution of salt (NaCl), by aiming to identify the exposition period and temperature that allow the classification of lots of black oats seeds in different vigour levels. The study was carried out by using five lots of black oats seeds from commercial procedure or seeds produced in Fazenda Experimental Lageado, UNESP Campus de Botucatu. The tests were carried out to the characterization of initial quality of the seed lots, by tests of germination, seedlings emergency in the field, electrical conductivity, length of normal and abnormal seedlings and mass of 1000 seeds and the studies of accelerated aging consisted the traditional (with water), with and without fungicid treatment, and accelerated aging with saturated solution of salt (NaCl) for periods of 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours, conditioning at temperatures of 40, 43 and 45oC. The studies concluded that the test of accelerated aging is adjusted to evaluate the vigor of black oats seeds. The test of accelerated aging traditional can be led at the temperature of 40o C for 24 or 48 hours and at 43 or 45oC for 48 hours; the accelerated aging with saturated solution of salt at 40, 43 or 45oC for 24 hours and the traditional accelerated aging with treated seeds at 40oC for 24 or 48 hours, 43oC for 48 hours or 45oC for 24 hours of conditioning.

Um lote de sementes de café Catuaí Amarelo, linhagem IAC H 2077-2-5-62, foi beneficiado em máquina de pré-limpeza, em máquina de limpeza e classificação e em mesa de gravidade, de forma isolada ou em seqüência, cujo fluxo operacional deu origem a vinte tratamentos. Do lote original, devidamente homogeneizado, foi retirada uma porção de sementes que permaneceu sem nenhum tipo de manipulação, constituindo o tratamento “Sem Beneficiamento”. Outra porção foi submetida ao processo de seleção manual, constituindo o tratamento “Escolha Manual”, que foi considerado como testemunha. Em seguida, o restante do lote foi submetido à ação de uma máquina de pré-limpeza, onde a porção que ficou retida na peneira inferior, com orifícios oblongos de 9/64 x ¾ de polegada, constituiu o tratamento “Pré Limpeza”. Após isso, essa porção foi submetida à ação de uma mesa de gravidade com a região de descarga dividida em frações superior, intermediária-superior, intermediária-inferior e inferior, constituindo quatro tratamentos. The need of more suitable informations concerning processing of coffee seeds led to the present research whose objectives were to verify the possibility of using the airscreen machine and the gravity table for dividing coffee seed lots into fractions according to physical characteristics and to study their effects on the physical and physiological quality of the seeds. A coffee seed lot of the Catuai Amarelo cultivar, line IAC H 2077-2-5-62 was processed in a precleaning machine, an air-screen machine and a gravity table, working isolated or in a sequence, whose operacional flow originated twenty treatments. From the original lot, properly homogenized, a portion of seeds was removed and remained without any kind of handling, constituting the treatment “Original Material”. Another portion was submitted to hand selection, constituting the treatment “Hand Sorting”, which was considered the control. After that, the remaining of the original lot was conditioned through a precleaning machine (scalper) in which the portion retained be the lower screen, with 9/64 x ¾ inch oblong holes, constituted the “Precleaning” treatment. Afterwards, this portion was sent through a gravity table with the discharge edge divided into fractions called upper, upper-intermediate, lower-intermediate and lower, with different specific weigths. It was regarded as upper end the highest spout of the discharge side, considering the lateral deck slope, and as lower spout the opposite end. Following that, these four fractions were put together and thoroughly mixed in just one fraction, so reconstituting the “Precleaning” portion, which was processed by an air-screen machine furnished with round or oblong hole screens, obtaining five size classes with the use of screens inserted in the following order, from top to botton: 15/64 x ¾, 22/64, 20/64, 13/64 x ¾ and 4 18/64 inch...(Complete abstract, click electronic access below)

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar o efeito da época de colheita e método de trilha e suas relações com a produção e a qualidade de sementes de três cultivares de caupi. Foi utilizado um delineamento em blocos casualizados, com arranjo fatorial 3 x 2 x 2, três cultivares (IPA-206, EPACE-10 e EMAPA-821), duas épocas de colheita (primeira, aproximadamente 50% das vagens secas e segunda com quase a totalidade das vagens secas) e duas formas de trilha (manual e mecânica). Analisou-se os componentes da produção (número de plantas/parcela, número de vagens/parcela, número de vagens/planta, número de sementes/vagem, porcentagem de vagem verde/parcela, porcentagem de vagem seca/parcela e massa de mil sementes), produção de sementes e qualidade fisiológica através dos testes de germinação e de vigor (primeira contagem, condutividade elétrica, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência de plântulas no campo, índice de velocidade de emergência de plântula no campo e massa seca de plântula) e determinação de danos mecânicos (teste de imersão das sementes em hipoclorito de sódio). As condições climáticas durante o ciclo da cultura influenciaram de formas distintas, em função do ano, o desenvolvimento das plantas. Nas condições de semeadura de outubro de 1999, o grande impedimento à produção de sementes de qualidade foram as altas precipitações. Nesta época, IPA-206 mostrou-se mais precoce, apresentando sementes de qualidade física e fisiológica superior. No experimento com semeadura em dezembro de 2000, as condições climáticas foram mais favoráveis, apresentando, como vantagem ao anterior, menor ocorrência de chuvas por ocasião das colheitas... . Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is a leguminous food grain of major importance in regions of Northern and Northeastern Brazil. It is cultivated by small farmers and also on a commercial scale. This research was proposed to verify the effect of harvest of period and types of threshing and its relation with the yield and quality of seed of three cowpea cultivars. A random block design was used on a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial scheme, three cultivars (IPA-206, EPACE-10 and EMAPA-821), two harvest periods (the first one, when approximately 50% of pods were dry and the second one, when almost of them were dry) and two types of threshing (manual and mechanical). Evaluations were made in relation to yield components (number of plants/plot, number of pods/plot, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, percentage of green pods/plot, percentage of dry pods/plot, and weigth of thousand seeds), yield of seeds, physiological quality of seeds through tests of germination and vigour (first counting, eletrical conductivity, accelerated aging, field emergence, speed of seedling emergence, and plant dry weigth), and mechanic damage. The climatic conditions during cultivation influenced differently according to years, the crops development and cycle. During the sowing on October, 1999 the restriction of seed quality production was the heavy rainfall precipitation. In 1999, the IPA- 206 cultivar showed earlier cycle, presenting seed of higher physical and physiological quality. The climatic conditions on December 2000 were more favorable than those in 1999, with lighter rainfall precipitacion on the harvest period. The cultivars presented earlier and similar cycle, and produced seed with higher physical and physiological quality. In the same period, the EMAPA-821 and IPA-206 cultivars had more vigorous seeds. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na área experimental da FCA/Unesp, Botucatu- SP, com materiais distintos de milho doce: BR 400 (bt) ‘Super doce’, BR 401 (su) ‘Doce-de-ouro’, BR 402 (su) ‘Doce-Cristal’. O delineamento experimental empregado foi o de blocos ao acaso com 6 repetições, constituindo os tratamentos as épocas de colheitas. Para que não ocorresse a contaminação genética entre cultivares, o experimento foi conduzido nas seguintes épocas de semeadura: em dezembro 1999 foram semeadas as cultivares BR 401 e BR 402 e no mês de janeiro de 2000, a BR 400. As colheitas das espigas foram iniciadas após a maturidade fisiológica, após despalhadas e divididas em duas porções, as espigas foram submetidas a secagem em estufas com circulação forçada com temperaturas de 30o C e 40o C. Os teores de água das sementes, inicial e após a secagem, de todas as colheitas foram determinados pelo método da estufa a 105 + 3oC, por 24 horas. Após... . The purpose of the present research was to study physiological seed quality of sweet corn as a function of water content and drying temperatures of ears at harvesting time. Experiments were made in the Agriculture School of São Paulo State University located in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Ears of sweet corns cultivars, BR 400 Super Sweet (brittle), BR 401 Doce de Ouro (sugary) and BR 402 Doce Cristal (sugary), were harvested at different times, starting at physiological seed maturity, and submitted to different drying temperatures (30o C and 40o C) in an air circulation chamber. After drying, ears were shelled and seeds were stored in paper bags under laboratory environmental conditions. Field dried seeds, with 10.1% of moisture, were utilized as a control. Cultivars with different genes for sweetness were grown 30 days apart to prevent contamination among them. Initial water content of seed before and after drying was determined by drying at 105o + 3oC for 24 hours. Nos experimentos de maturação foram avaliados o comprimento e diâmetro do fruto, o teor de água e peso da matéria fresca e seca dos frutos e sementes e, no segundo experimento, acrescentado o teste de germinação de sementes e determinado o teor de ácidos graxos livres, nas três últimas colheitas. A maturidade fisiológica das sementes ocorreu a partir de 9 meses após a antese, observando-se 100% de germinação, permitindo recomendar a colheita dos frutos até três meses antes da dispersão. Em laboratório foram aplicadas as temperaturas de 25o, 30o e 35oC, como tratamento pré-germinativo, durante 20, 40 e 60 dias, resultando em pequeno aumento da germinação em função do tempo do aquecimento, além da maior duração do processo germinativo. Estudou-se o efeito das temperaturas 25o, 30o e 35oC em germinador, no teor de água, velocidade e germinação das sementes, resultando em 61% de germinação, na temperatura de 30oC, aos 45 dias da semeadura. Comparou-se tipos de preparo das sementes com diferentes estruturas. Os despontes simples ou duplos aplicados às sementes não facilitaram o processo de embebição e, consequentemente, não promoveram aumento na germinação. Durante o armazenamento, a viabilidade das sementes foi avaliada pelo teste de tetrazólio a 0,5%, aos 30, 60 e 90 dias, em câmara seca, câmara fria a 5 e 15oC e na temperatura ambiente e em embalagens porosa e impermeável, resultando a melhor conservação das sementes na temperatura ambiente e em sacos plásticos... . In the present work it was studied the maturation of the fruits and seeds of the piassava palm tree, the period of heating in pre-germination and the temperature effects in the germination of seeds, the comparison of seeds preparing methods with the different structures and conditions of storage and packages types, aiming for the maintenance and viability of the seeds. In the experiments of maturation it were evaluated the fruit length and diameter, water content, dry and fresh matter weight of the fruits and seeds and in the second experiment, it was added the seed germination test and was determined the free fatty acids content at the last three harvests. After the 9 months of the anthesis, occurred the physiological maturity of seeds and observed 100 % of germination, allowing to suggest the fruits harvest until three months before dispersion period. In laboratory, it were applied the temperatures of 25o, 30o and 35oC as pre-germination treatment, during 20, 40 and 60 days, resulting in small increase of germination, in relation to the heating time, besides the major period of the germination process. It was studied the temperature effects of 25o , 30o and 35o C in germinator, under the water content, rate and percentage of the seeds germination, resulting in 61 % of seeds germination, under temperature of 30o C, at the 45 days, after sowing. It was compared types of seeds preparation with different structures. The simple or double cutting, applied to the seeds did not facilitate the imbebition process and consequently did not carried out an increase in the germination. During the storage, the seeds viability were evaluated by the Tetrazolium's test at 0,5%, at the 30, 60 and 90 days, at dry chamber, cold chamber at 5o C and 15oC, and room temperature and in porous and impermeable packages, resulting in the best conservation of seeds, in room temperature and in locked plastic bags...
