Abstract

International audience; Submersible investigations employing heat flow measurements (12 stations), sampling and imagery of the two relict high-temperature hydrothermal zones of the TAG field, the Alvin and Mir sulfide zones, elucidate relations between heat sources and mineralization including an active sulfide mound that has been the focus of prior studies. Values of heat flow in the Mir zone and at the margin of the active mound are inversely proportional to distance from adjacent volcanic centers. This observation supports the hypothesis that intrusions at volcanic centers adjacent to the high-temperature hydrothermal zones supply the heat to drive hydrothermal activity. The chronology of hydrothermal deposits in the different zones indicates that the intrusions are episodic with field-wide high-temperature hydrothermal events recurring at intervals of tens of thousands of years, while activity at individual zones may recur at intervals of hundreds to thousands of years. A sequence of hydrothermal deposits ranges to at least 140,000 years ago from massive sulfides forming at the active mound, to recrystallization of sulfides in the active and relict zones, to pyritization of an inactive mound in the Alvin zone; low-temperature mineral phases precipitate before, during and after the sulfides. a 5 x 5 km area of the floor and wall on the east side of the rift valley near the center of a spreading segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26øN, 45øW (Fig. 1; Rona et al., 1993). International audience; Du 10 janvier au 6 février 1991, la campagne Yokosuka 90 a eu pour objet l'étude géologique, géophysique et géochimique de la branche de direction N10 de la dorsale du Bassin nord-fidjien (SW Pacifique). Ce segment est caractérisé par un système d'accrétion actuel constitué d'une succession "en échelon" de grabens dont certains dépassent 4000 m de profondeur. Ces grabens sont bordés par des murs abrupts d'environ 1000 m de hauteur. Ces caractéristiques sont habituellement celle des dorsales lentes, alors que le taux d'ouverture dans cette zone est estimé à 5 cm/an. (Résumé d'auteur)

Abstract

Since 1987, Japanese and French geologists, geophysicists, and biologists have been studying the North Fiji Basin Ridge within the framework of a joint project named STARMER (Science and Technology Agency of Japan—IFREMER of France). This ridge was first geologically, geophysically, and geochemically surveyed during the 1985 SEAPSO 3 cruise of the R/V Jean Charcot [Auzende et al., 1988]. At that time, water sampling and morphotectonic analysis indicated that the North Fiji Basin Ridge was technically and hydrothermally active. Within the STARMER project, four surface ship cruises have been conducted {Kaiyo 87‐88‐89 and Yokosuka 90). One significant result of these surveys is the complete mapping of the entire ridge between 14°S and 22°S (Figure 1), an area approximately 900 km long and more than 50 km wide (Sea Beam and Furuno multibeam swath‐mapping systems were used). During the Kaiyo 87 cruise, the presence of active hydrothermalism (sulfide deposits, chimneys expelling shimmering water, and associated living animal colonies) was discovered through water sampling and video deep towing.

21. Collision of the IZU arc with Honshu and the effects of oblique subduction in the Miura-Boso peninsulas

Abstract

Collision of the Izu arc in Central Japan is discussed with a focus on its tectonic effects to the east of the arc, in the Miura-Boso Peninsulas of Honshu. The tectonics are the combination of the following events: Philippine Sea plate spreading in the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene; opening of the Sea of Japan in the middle Miocene; obduction of ophiolitic rocks in the northeasternmost corner of the Philippine Sea plate, and forearc sedimentation between the Honshu and Izu arcs. Oblique subduction has shifted the plate boundary from northeast to southwest, from the present Mineoka Tectonic Belt through the Miura Fold Belt to the Sagami trough since the Miocene. Remarkable right-lateral transpressional deformation occurred throughout this period of the oblique collision and subduction.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of the BioAccess cruise was the study, with the submersible Shinkai 2000, of the Pacmanus and Desmos zones in the Manus basin. Due to their geodynamical setting, off axis and on a transverse fault, these two zones show a specific hydrothermal activity. Within the Desmos zone in particular, the hydrothermal activity is characterised by acidic fluids, native sulphur deposits, and a poor associated fauna highly dependent of its location and the andesitic nature of the outcropping rocks.
