Context. (4015) Wilson-Harrington (hereafter, WH) was discovered as a comet in 1949 but has a dynamical property consistent with that of a near-Earth asteroid. Although there is a report that the 1949 activity is associated with an ion tail, the cause of the activity has not yet been identified. Aims. This work aims to reveal the mysterious comet-like activity of the near-Earth asteroid. Methods. We conducted new polarimetric observations of WH from May 2022 to January 2023, reanalyses of the photographic plate images taken at the time of its discovery in 1949, and dust tail simulation modelings, where the dust terminal velocity and ejection epoch are taken into account. Results. We found that this object shows polarization characteristics similar to those of low-albedo asteroids. We derived the geometric albedo ranging from pV = 0.076 +- 0.010 to pV = 0.094 +- 0.018 from our polarimetry (the values vary depending on the data used for fitting and the slope-albedo relationship coefficients). In addition, the 1949 image showed an increase in brightness around the nucleus. Furthermore, we found that the color of the tail is consistent with sunlight, suggesting that the 1949 activity is associated with dust ejection. From the dust tail analysis, ~9 x 10^5 kg of material was ejected episodically at a low velocity equivalent to or even slower than the escape velocity. Conclusions. We theoretically investigate quasiparticle properties of a neutron immersed in an alpha condensate, which is one of the possible states of dilute symmetric nuclear matter. The resonant $p$-wave neutron-alpha scattering, which plays a crucial role in forming halo nuclei, is considered. This system is similar to a Bose polaron near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance that can be realized in cold-atomic experiments. Calculating the low-momentum self-energy within the field-theoretical approach, we give an analytical formula for the effective mass of a polaronic neutron as a function of alpha condensation density. Two adjacent neutrons in a medium, each of which behaves like a stable polaron having an enhanced effective mass, can form a bound dineutron, with the help of $^1S_0$ neutron-neutron attraction. This is in contrast to the case of the vacuum, where a dineutron is known to be unbound. Moreover, adding an impurity-like neutron to symmetric nuclear matter can be regarded as a perturbation accompanied by an explicit breaking of Wigner's $ SU \left( 4 \right) $ symmetry. The relationship between the polaron energy and the Wigner term in nuclear mass formulas is discussed in the low-density limit. Prior research in computational argumentation has mainly focused on scoring the quality of arguments, with less attention on explicating logical errors. In this work, we introduce four sets of explainable templates for common informal logical fallacies designed to explicate a fallacy's implicit logic. Using our templates, we conduct an annotation study on top of 400 fallacious arguments taken from LOGIC dataset and achieve a high agreement score (Krippendorf's alpha of 0.54) and reasonable coverage (0.83). Finally, we conduct an experiment for detecting the structure of fallacies and discover that state-of-the-art language models struggle with detecting fallacy templates (0.47 accuracy). To facilitate research on fallacies, we make our dataset and guidelines publicly available.

Context. Ch-type asteroids are distinctive among other dark asteroids in that they exhibit deep negative polarization branches (NPBs). Nevertheless, the physical and compositional properties that cause their polarimetric distinctiveness are less investigated. Aims. We aim to investigate the polarimetric uniqueness of Ch-type asteroids by making databases of various observational quantities (i.e., spectroscopic and photometric properties as well as polarimetric ones) of dark asteroids.Methods. We conducted an intensive polarimetric survey of 52 dark asteroids (including 31 Ch-type asteroids) in the R$_\mathrm{C}$-band to increase the size of polarimetric samples. The observed data are compiled with previous polarimetric, spectroscopic, and photometric archival data to find their correlations. Results. We find remarkable correlations between these observed quantities, particularly the depth of NPBs and their spectroscopic features associated with the hydrated minerals. The amplitude of the opposition effect in photometric properties also shows correlations with polarimetric and spectral properties. However, these observed quantities do not show noticeable correlations with the geometric albedo, thermal inertia, and diameter of asteroids. Conclusions. Based on the observational evidence, we arrive at our conclusion that the submicrometer-sized structures (fibrous or flaky puff pastry-like structures in phyllosilicates) in the regolith particles could contribute to the distinctive NPBs of hydrated asteroids., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures (Accepted for the publication of Astronomy and Astrophysics on May 30, 2024)

We confirm by using the Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculation that $ {}^{164} \mathrm{Pb} $ is a possible heaviest $ N = Z $ doubly-magic nucleus whose life time is long enough to be measured on accelerator experiment. We estimate the proton-emission and alpha-decay half lives of $ {}^{164} \mathrm{Pb} $. Developing methods to solve nuclear many-body problems with quantum computers is an imperative pursuit within the nuclear physics community. Here, we introduce a quantum algorithm to accurately and precisely compute the ground state of valence two-neutron systems leveraging presently available Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum devices. Our focus lies on the nuclei having a doubly-magic core plus two valence neutrons in the $ p $, $ sd $, and $ pf $ shells, i.e. ${}^6$He, ${}^{18}$O, and ${}^{42}$Ca, respectively. Our ansatz, quantum circuit, is constructed in the pair-wise form, taking into account the symmetries of the system in an explicit manner, and enables us to reduce the number of qubits and the number of CNOT gates required. The results on a real quantum hardware by IBM Quantum Platform show that the proposed method gives very accurate results of the ground-state energies, which are typically within $ 0.1 \, \% $ error in the energy for ${}^6$He and ${}^{18}$O and at most $ 1 \, \% $ error for ${}^{42}$Ca. Multi-robot cooperative transport is crucial in logistics, housekeeping, and disaster response. However, it poses significant challenges in environments where objects of various weights are mixed and the number of robots and objects varies. This paper presents Task-priority Intermediated Hierarchical Distributed Policies (TIHDP), a multi-agent Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework that addresses these challenges through a hierarchical policy structure. TIHDP consists of three layers: task allocation policy (higher layer), dynamic task priority (intermediate layer), and robot control policy (lower layer). Whereas the dynamic task priority layer can manipulate the priority of any object to be transported by receiving global object information and communicating with other robots, the task allocation and robot control policies are restricted by local observations/actions so that they are not affected by changes in the number of objects and robots. Through simulations and real-robot demonstrations, TIHDP shows promising adaptability and performance of the learned multi-robot cooperative transport, even in environments with varying numbers of robots and objects. We propose an enhanced machine learning method to calculate the ground state of two-body systems. Compared to the original method [Naito, Naito, and Hashimoto, Phys. Rev. Research 5, 033189 (2023)], the present method enables one to consider the spin and isospin degrees of freedom by employing a non-fully-connected deep neural network and the unsupervised machine learning technique. We construct an injective weight-preserving map (called the forgetful map) from the set of all admissible subsets in the quantum alcove model associated to an arbitrary weight. The image of this forgetful map can be explicitly described by introducing the notion of "interpolated quantum Lakshmibai-Seshadri (QLS for short) paths", which can be thought of as a generalization of quantum Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths. As an application, we reformulate, in terms of interpolated QLS paths, an identity of Chevalley type for the graded characters of Demazure submodules of a level-zero extremal weight module over a quantum affine algebra, which is a representation-theoretic analog of the Chevalley formula for the torus-equivariant $K$-group of a semi-infinite flag manifold., Comment: 32 pages

Context. Sunlight scattered from the surface of an airless body is generally partially polarized, and the corresponding polarization state includes information about the scattering surface, such as albedo, surface grain sizes, composition, and taxonomic types. Aims. We conducted polarimetry of two large airless bodies, the Dawn mission targets (1) Ceres and (4) Vesta, in the near-infrared region. We further investigated the change in the polarimetric phase curves over the wavelengths expected from previous works. Methods. We used the Nishiharima Infrared Camera (NIC) installed at the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory (NHAO) to observe these objects at multiple geometric configurations in the J, H, and $\mathrm{K_s}$ bands ($ \lambda \sim 1.2\mathrm{-}2.3 \mathrm{\mu m} $). Results. Polarimetric parameters were determined and compared with previously reported experimental results. In particular, Vesta exhibits a characteristic change in the negative polarization branch as the wavelength increases to the $\mathrm{K_s}$ band, which we interpret as an indication of the dominant existence of $D \sim 10\mathrm{-}20 \mathrm{\mu m}$ particles. Our approach is supported by empirical reasoning and coincides well with an independent, theory-driven approach based on thermal modeling. Conclusions. This work demonstrates how near-infrared polarimetry can be utilized to quantitatively determine the particle size of airless objects. This work explores characteristics of the negative polarization branch (NPB), which occurs in scattered light from rough surfaces, with particular focus on the effects of fine particles. Factors such as albedo, compression, roughness, and the refractive index are considered to determine their influence on the NPB. This study compiles experimental data and lunar observations to derive insights from a wide array of literature. Employing our proposed methodology, we estimate the representative grain sizes on the lunar surface to be $D \sim 1 \mathrm{-} 2 \mathrm{\mu m}$, with $D \lesssim 2 \mathrm{-} 4 \mathrm{\mu m}$, consistent with observed grain size frequency distributions in laboratory settings for lunar fines. Considering Mars, we propose that the finest particles are likely lacking ($D\gg 10 \mathrm{\mu m}$), which matches previous estimations. This study highlights the potential of multiwavelength, particularly near-infrared, polarimetry for precisely gauging small particles on airless celestial bodies. Crystal structure design is important for the discovery of new highly functional materials because crystal structure strongly influences material properties. Crystal structures are composed of space-filling polyhedra, which affect material properties such as ionic conductivity and dielectric constant. However, most conventional methods of crystal structure prediction use random structure generation methods that do not take space-filling polyhedra into account, contributing to the inefficiency of materials development. In this work, we propose a crystal structure generation method based on discrete geometric analysis of polyhedra information. In our method, the shape and connectivity of a space-filling polyhedron are represented as a dual periodic graph, and the crystal structure is generated by the standard realization of this graph. We demonstrate that this method can correctly generate face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic structures from dual periodic graphs. This work is a first step toward generating undiscovered crystal structures based on the target polyhedra, leading to major advances in materials design in areas including electronics and energy storage.

In some insulators, corner charges are fractionally quantized, due to the topological invariant called a filling anomaly. The previous theories of fractional corner charges have been mostly limited to two-dimensional systems. In three dimensions, only limited cases have been studied. In this study, we derive formulas for the filling anomaly and the corner charge in various crystals with all the tetrahedral and cubic space groups. We discuss that the quantized corner charge requires the crystal shapes to be vertex-transitive polyhedra. We show that the formula of the filling anomaly is universally given by the difference between electronic and ionic charges at the Wyckoff position 1a. The fractional corner charges appear by equally distributing the filling anomaly to all the corners of the crystal. We also derive the k-space formulas for the fractional corner charge. In some cases, the corner charge is not determined solely from the irreps at high-symmetry k-points. We find that simple neural networks with ReLU activation generate polytopes as an approximation of a unit sphere in various dimensions. The species of polytopes are regulated by the network architecture, such as the number of units and layers. For a variety of activation functions, generalization of polytopes is obtained, which we call neural polytopes. They are a smooth analogue of polytopes, exhibiting geometric duality. In 2023, we are replacing the LLRF system for the KEK-PF 2.5 GeV ring. The new system is composed of digital boards such as eRTM, AMC, and {\mu}RTM, based on the MTCA.4 standard. In our system, we adopted the non-IQ direct sampling method for RF detection. We set the sampling frequency at 8/13 (307.75 MHz) of the RF frequency, where the denominator (13) is the divisor of the harmonic number (312) of the storage ring. This allows us to detect the transient variation of the cavity voltage that is synchronized with the beam revolution. We also plan to compensate for the voltage variation by implementing a feedforward technique. These functions will be useful in a double RF system for KEK future synchrotron light source. Production and installation of the new system were complete and the new system is under commissioning. Layer number-dependent band structures and symmetry are vital for the electrical and optical characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Harvesting 2D TMDCs with tunable thickness and properties can be achieved through top-down etching and bottom-up growth strategies. In this study, we report a pioneering technique that utilizes the migration of in-situ generated Na-W-S-O droplets to etch out one-dimensional (1D) nanotrenches in few-layer WS$_2$. 1D WS$_2$ nanotrenches were successfully fabricated on the optically inert bilayer WS$_2$, showing pronounced photoluminescence and second harmonic generation signals. Additionally, we demonstrate the modulation of inkjet-printed Na$_2$WO$_4$-Na$_2$SO$_4$ particles to switch between the etching and growth modes by manipulating the sulfur supply. This versatile approach enables the creation of 1D nanochannels on 2D TMDCs.
