Quality assessment of agricultural produce is a crucial step in minimizing food stock wastage. However, this is currently done manually and often requires expert supervision, especially in smaller seeds like corn. We propose a novel computer vision-based system for automating this process. We build a novel seed image acquisition setup, which captures both the top and bottom views. Dataset collection for this problem has challenges of data annotation costs/time and class imbalance. We address these challenges by i.) using a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN) to generate real-looking images for the classes with lesser images and ii.) annotate a large dataset with minimal expert human intervention by using a Batch Active Learning (BAL) based annotation tool. We benchmark different image classification models on the dataset obtained. We are able to get accuracies of up to 91.6% for testing the physical purity of seed samples.

Objective: To report the incidence of malignancy in gynaecological organs removed during radical cystectomy (RC). Patients and Methods: A retrospective multicentre study of 1600 RCs at three high‐volume institutions between January 2009 and March 2022 was performed. Pathological findings in gynaecological organs in female RC specimens were reviewed. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of malignant gynaecological organ involvement (GOI) at time of RC. Results: Overall, 302 females with a median (interquartile range) age of 68 (61–75) years underwent RC for clinical (c)Ta–T4 bladder cancer. In all, 56 patients (18.5%) received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Malignant GOI was seen in 20 patients (6.6%); the most common single sites of GOI were the uterus (five patients) and vaginal wall (four), followed by cervix (one), and ovaries (one). Nine patients had involvement of more than one gynaecological organ. No females had a primary gynaecological malignancy detected incidentally at RC. Patients with GOI were more likely to have cT3/T4 stage (P < 0.001), preoperative hydronephrosis (P = 0.004), lymphovascular invasion (P = 0.002), and squamous cell carcinoma (P = 0.005) than those without GOI. On multivariable analysis, cT4 stage was an independent predictor of malignant GOI (odds ratio 88.3, 95% confidence interval 10.1–1214; P < 0.001). Conclusion: To our knowledge, we present the largest multi‐institutional study examining malignant GOI in females with bladder cancer undergoing RC. The rate of GOI at the time of RC is low and associated with higher clinical stage. In the absence of clinical or radiological evidence of sexual organ involvement, our results do not support their routine removal at the time of RC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DisclaimerThis article is based on recommendations from the 12th WALT Congress, Nice, October 3-6, 2018, and a follow-up review of the existing data and the clinical observations of an international multidisciplinary panel of clinicians and researchers with expertise in the area of supportive care in cancer and/or PBM clinical application and dosimetry. This article is informational in nature. As with all clinical materials, this paper should be used with a clear understanding that continued research and practice could result in new insights and recommendations. The review reflects the collective opinion and, as such, does not necessarily represent the opinion of any individual author. In no event shall the authors be liable for any decision made or action taken in reliance on the proposed protocols.ObjectiveThis position paper reviews the potential prophylactic and therapeutic effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on side effects of cancer therapy, including chemotherapy (CT), radiation therapy (RT), and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).BackgroundThere is a considerable body of evidence supporting the efficacy of PBM for preventing oral mucositis (OM) in patients undergoing RT for head and neck cancer (HNC), CT, or HSCT. This could enhance patients’ quality of life, adherence to the prescribed cancer therapy, and treatment outcomes while reducing the cost of cancer care.MethodsA literature review on PBM effectiveness and dosimetry considerations for managing certain complications of cancer therapy were conducted. A systematic review was conducted when numerous randomized controlled trials were available. Results were presented and discussed at an international consensus meeting at the World Association of photobiomoduLation Therapy (WALT) meeting in 2018 that included world expert oncologists, radiation oncologists, oral oncologists, and oral medicine professionals, physicists, engineers, and oncology researchers. The potential mechanism of action of PBM and evidence of PBM efficacy through reported outcomes for individual indications were assessed.ResultsThere is a large body of evidence demonstrating the efficacy of PBM for preventing OM in certain cancer patient populations, as recently outlined by the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO). Building on these, the WALT group outlines evidence and prescribed PBM treatment parameters for prophylactic and therapeutic use in supportive care for radiodermatitis, dysphagia, xerostomia, dysgeusia, trismus, mucosal and bone necrosis, lymphedema, hand-foot syndrome, alopecia, oral and dermatologic chronic graft-versus-host disease, voice/speech alterations, peripheral neuropathy, and late fibrosis amongst cancer survivors.ConclusionsThere is robust evidence for using PBM to prevent and treat a broad range of complications in cancer care. Specific clinical practice guidelines or evidence-based expert consensus recommendations are provided. These recommendations are aimed at improving the clinical utilization of PBM therapy in supportive cancer care and promoting research in this field. It is anticipated these guidelines will be revised periodically.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a pressing global public health concern characterized by a challenging prognosis and a higher risk of local recurrence in cases of delayed diagnosis. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), especially prevalent, often manifests itself initially as oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). Despite accessibility to the oral cavity, timely identification of OSCC remains a substantial challenge. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a subset of small noncoding RNAs, can be released in various bodily fluids, including blood, serum, tissue, and saliva. Moreover, previous research underscores the significant role of miRNAs from oral samples as biomarkers in diverse cancers. The primary objective of this research is to discern distinct salivary miRNAs in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. This study aims to offer an overview of the fundamental attributes of saliva, biomarker detection methods in different salivary analyzes, and the potential of salivary biomarkers in the screening, monitoring, and analysis of the molecular pathology of patients afflicted by HNC. It intends to explore the prospective role of salivary biomarkers in screening, monitoring, and diagnosing cancers impacting the oral cavity and beyond. Inconclusion, miRNA sampling is a less invasive method than other methods, such as blood and tissue, for the early diagnosis of lesions with a potential to turn into cancer, especially oral cancer and other cancer diagnosis with reduced anxiety and pain for the patient. Moreover, it is much easier to obtain multiple samples at various times for screening and monitoring, especially potentially malignant disorders, and cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In root canal therapy, radiographic imaging of the teeth and surrounding peri-radicular structures is crucial for diagnosis and management. The valuable data necessary to make a diagnosis can be lost because of the complexity of the maxillofacial skeleton, the inaccuracy of 2D radiographic images and the superimposition of surrounding anatomical structures. This case report describes a larger than normal radiolucency that was not visualised on a periapical radiograph (PA), while this was evident on the orthopantogram (OPG) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. When prescribing a radiograph, it is imperative to maximise the benefit of acquisition of information while maintaining the radiation safety for the patient; adjunct-imaging techniques such as CBCT must be considered if conventional radiographic techniques do not support clinical signs and symptoms. We performed a systematic review of the current literature addressing the safety and efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in cancer patients. In this systematic review, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used. In vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies, which investigated the effect of PBMT on cell proliferation/differentiation, tumor growth, recurrence rate, and/or overall survival were included. The Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were searched through April 2020. A total of 67 studies met the inclusion criteria with 43 in vitro, 15 in vivo, and 9 clinical studies identified. In vitro studies investigating the effect of PBMT on a diverse range of cancer cell lines demonstrated conflicting results. This could be due to the differences in used parameters and the frequency of PBM applications. In vivo studies and clinical trials with a follow‐up period demonstrated that PBMT is safe with regards to tumor growth and patient advantage in the prevention and treatment of specific cancer therapy‐related complications. Current human studies, supported by most animal studies, show safety with PBMT using currently recommended clinical parameters, including in Head & Neck cancer (HNC) in the area of PBMT exposure. A significant and growing literature indicates that PBMT is safe and effective, and may even offer a benefit in patient overall survival. Nevertheless, continuing research is indicated to improve understanding and provide further elucidation of remaining questions regarding PBM use in oncology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
