We use the daily data from 1 October 2010 to 1 March 2021 on the stock prices of several global, regional, and country-specific ESG indices of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index family (DJSI) and MSCI family to analyse the relative performance of sustainable indices (ESG) and corresponding conventional benchmarks. In terms of classic risk and return characteristics and modern portfolio metrics, we report mixed evidence with some sustainability indices marginally outperforming the traditional benchmarks and others staying at parity. Regionally, the evidence is heterogeneous; the Pan Arab, the Middle East (including Israel), the United States, Emerging Markets, and Europe indices reported a slightly superior performance and those belonging to Asia Pacific, Emerging Africa, and Latin America marginally underperformed compared to their conventional counterparts. The findings of this study imply that sustainable investments appear to be an encouraging investment option, although their progress has not been substantial. For an appreciable outperformance of sustainable investments, a more conducive regulatory framework should be established, including robust incentivizing policies concerning tax rebates or low capital costs. Using a backward‐looking Philips curve framework and a Logistic Smooth Transition Regression (STR) model, this article examined the exchange rate pass‐through (ERPT) to final consumer prices in the case of India. Specifically, the nonlinearity of ERPT has been investigated with respect to the level of economic activity and the rate of inflation by considering two alternative measures of exchange rate. For the first transition variable, results are markedly different between high and low‐activity regimes and signify the favourable impact of economic activity on the extent of pass‐through. In the short run, 1% exchange rate appreciation would decrease the price level by 0.244% when the economy is in a low‐activity regime; however, the same appreciation increases the price level by 0.485% when there is a boom in the economy. In the long run, ERPT in the low‐activity regime is −0.358, and in the high‐activity regime, it is 0.039. In both regimes, pass‐through coefficients differ from zero and one, implying that neither local currency pricing nor producer currency pricing characterizes the ERPT mechanism. The impact of other important determinants of inflation is also well according to theoretical expectations. Finally, for the rate of inflation, we did not report any evidence favouring the Taylor hypothesis in the case of India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the long-run and short-run causal relationships among energy consumption, real gross domestic product (GDP) and CO2emissions using aggregate and disaggregate (sectoral) energy consumption measures utilising annual data from 1971 to 2011. The autoregressive distributed lag bounds test reveals that there is a long-run relationship among the variables concerned at both aggregate and disaggregate levels. The Toda–Yamamoto causality tests, however, reveal that the long-run as well short-run causal relationship among the variables is not uniform across sectors. The weight of evidences of the study indicates that there is short-run causality from electricity consumption to economic growth, and to CO2emissions. The results suggest that India should take appropriate cautious steps to sustain high growth rate and at the same time to control emissions of CO2. Further, energy and environmental policies should acknowledge the sectoral differences in the relationship between energy consumption and real gross domestic product. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study uses three volatility models of the GARCH family to examine the volatility behavior and in particular volatility persistence or long memory of the return series of four Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sectoral indices. The study uses the daily data from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2013. The results of the standard GARCH model suggest the presence of volatility persistence in the return series of all four indices. The EGARCH results suggest that the leverage effect is present and significant for BSE IT and BSE Bankex only, implying that BSE Metal and BSE PSU can be good investment in anticipation of bad times. The CGARCH estimates indicate that the short-run volatility component is weaker. However, the permanent components of the conditional variance exhibit a high degree of persistence for all return series. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper seeks to re-examine the export-led growth hypothesis in India using the quarterly data for the period 1996 to 2009. It uses Granger causality test (Toda and Yamamoto, 1995) and forecast error variance decomposition (within VAR framework) to investigate the interrelationship among exports, imports, real effective exchange rate, and economic growth in the short run as well as long run.
