Abstract

Though profitable crop production can be more simply achieved by using synthetic pesticides, the research of alternative plant protection solutions is necessary. The effect of the volatile oils of cinnamon, thyme, and a copper ingredient fertilizer were tested for their activity against apple scab and powdery mildew in apple orchards in 2014 and 2017. Oils applied alone or in combination were effective against apple scab in 2014 and in 2017 and against powdery mildew on leaves in 2017. The copper ingredient fertilizer product improved the efficacy of the oils. The results of these trials show that the tested volatile oils are suitable candidates for further research and for the development of organic fungicides against the diseases of apple.

Abstract

The origin of the carbonatites that appear on Earth is one of the most controversial current topics in the petrogenesis of igneous rocks. Situated in the northern sector of the Basal Complex of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands), the Miocene Esquinzo ultra-alkaline plutonic rock complex is composed of pyroxenites, melteigites-ijolites-urtites, malignites-nepheline syenites, carbonatites, silicocarbonatites, nephelinites and nepheline phonolites. This work tries to establish the genesis of this massif of ultra-alkaline rocks with associated carbonatites from Fuerteventura (which are very rare in the oceans). The geochemical characteristics of these rocks and the minerals that are included in them have allowed us to establish their origin. This complex was generated by three successive magmatic events associated with differentiation of melanephelinite magmas emplaced in the oceanic crust. Silicocarbonatite and calciocarbonatite (sövites) dykes are related to the first magmatic event and were formed by fractional crystallization of H2O- and CO2-rich ijolite magmas. The melanephelinite magmas that formed these plutonic ultra-alkaline rocks were apparently generated as partial melts of asthenospheric mantle, which assimilated enriched lithospheric mantle material as they ascended. The upwelling of this large body of anomalous asthenospheric Miocene material exceeded the deformation associated with plate motions and led to an oceanic rifting event in Fuerteventura. Abstract

Spatially resolved information on corrosion reactions operating at the cut edges of coated metals can be obtained using microelectrochemical scanning techniques using a suitable selection of operation modes and scanning probes. The scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) provides current density maps with a spatial resolution of the order of the dimensions of the sample, which allows the temporal evolution of the corrosion reactions to be followed over time. This leads to the identification and localization of cathodic and anodic sites, although the technique lacks chemical specificity for the unequivocal identification of the reactive species. The application of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was previously limited to image cathodic reaction sites, either due to oxygen consumption in the amperometric operation or by the alkalinisation of the electrolyte in potentiometric operation. However, it is shown that anodic sites can be effectively monitored using an ion-selective microelectrode (ISME) as a probe. The ISME probes detected differences in the local concentrations of Zn2+ and OH− ions from the cut edges of a complete coil coating system compared to the same system after the polymeric layers were removed. In this way, it has been shown that the inhibitor loading in the polymer layers effectively contributes to reducing the corrosion rates at the cut edge, thus helping to extend the useful life of the sacrificial galvanized layer bonded directly to the steel matrix. Additionally, these two probe configurations can be integrated into a multi-electrode tip for potentiometric operation to simultaneously monitor localized changes in pH values and metal ion dissolution in a single scan. Spatial and temporal distributions were further investigated using different rastering procedures, and the potential of constructing pseudomaps for 2D-imaging is described.
