Galaxy clusters provide an excellent probe in various research fields in astrophysics and cosmology. However, the number of galaxy clusters detected so far in the $AKARI$ North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field is limited. In this work, we provide galaxy cluster candidates in the $AKARI$ NEP field with the minimum requisites based only on coordinates and photometric redshift (photo-$z$) of galaxies. We used galaxies detected in 5 optical bands ($g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, and $Y$) by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), assisted with $u$-band from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) MegaPrime/MegaCam, and IRAC1 and IRAC2 bands from the $Spitzer$ space telescope for photo-$z$ estimation. We calculated the local density around every galaxy using the 10$^{th}$-nearest neighbourhood. Cluster candidates were determined by applying the friends-of-friends algorithm to over-densities. 88 cluster candidates containing 4390 member galaxies below redshift 1.1 in 5.4 deg$^2$ have been detected. The reliability of our method was examined through false detection tests, redshift uncertainty tests, and applications on the COSMOS data, giving false detection rates of 0.01 to 0.05 and recovery rate of 0.9 at high richness. 3 X-ray clusters previously observed by $ROSAT$ and $Chandra$ were recovered. The cluster galaxies show higher stellar mass and lower star formation rate (SFR) compared to the field galaxies in two-sample Z-tests. We present a five-broad-band (grizy) photometric catalogue of Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) optical imaging observations at around the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) where the AKARI infrared (IR) satellite conducted a large survey (NEP-Wide survey). The observations cover almost all the NEP-Wide survey field down to the depth of 28.1, 26.8, 26.3, 25.5, and 25.0 mag (5σ) at grizy, respectively. The five-band HSC catalogue contains about 2.6 million objects, and 70 959 AKARI NEP-Wide counterpart sources are identified in the catalogue. We added existing supplementary catalogues from the u band to the far-IR band, and estimated photo-z for the AKARI-HSC sources. We achieved σΔz/(1 + zs) = 0.06 and an outlier rate of 13.4 per cent at z = 0.2–1.5. Using the spectral energy distribution (SED) template fitting, we classified the AKARI-HSC galaxies into four categories, namely quiescent, star-forming, Type1 active galactic nucleus (AGN), and Type2 AGN, in each redshift bin. At z > 1, the mean SED of star-forming galaxies in mid-IR (3–10 μm) range is significantly different from that of spiral galaxies in the nearby Universe, indicating that many of star-forming galaxies at z > 1 contain a heat source capable of heating dust to temperatures that radiate thermal emission in the mid-IR range. Furthermore, we estimated the number fraction of AGNs (fAGN) in each bin of redshift and IR luminosity (LIR), and examined the dependence of redshift and LIR. In log(LIR/L⊙) = 11.0–14.0, the fAGN shows a significant increase with increasing redshift, regardless of the LIR bins. In contrast, the fAGN shows a slight increase against LIR at z < 1 and no increase with increasing LIR at z > 1.

In order to understand the interaction between the central black hole and the whole galaxy or their co-evolution history along with cosmic time, a complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is crucial. However, AGNs are often missed in optical, UV and soft X-ray observations since they could be obscured by gas and dust. A mid-infrared (mid-IR) survey supported by multiwavelength data is one of the best ways to find obscured AGN activities because it suffers less from extinction. Previous large IR photometric surveys, e.g., $WISE$ and $Spitzer$, have gaps between the mid-IR filters. Therefore, star forming galaxy (SFG)-AGN diagnostics in the mid-IR were limited. The $AKARI$ satellite has a unique continuous 9-band filter coverage in the near to mid-IR wavelengths. In this work, we take advantage of the state-of-the-art spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling software, CIGALE, to find AGNs in mid-IR. We found 126 AGNs in the NEP-Wide field with this method. We also investigate the energy released from the AGN as a fraction of the total IR luminosity of a galaxy. We found that the AGN contribution is larger at higher redshifts for a given IR luminosity. The $AKARI$ infrared (IR) space telescope conducted two surveys (Deep and Wide) in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field to find more than 100,000 IR sources using its Infrared Camera (IRC). IRC's 9 filters, which cover wavebands from 2 to 24 $\mu$m continuously, make $AKARI$ unique in comparison with other IR observatories such as $Spitzer$ or $WISE$. However, studies of the $AKARI$ NEP-Wide field sources had been limited due to the lack of follow-up observations in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical. In this work, we present the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) MegaPrime/MegaCam $u$-band source catalogue of the $AKARI$ NEP-Wide field. The observations were taken in 7 nights in 2015 and 2016, resulting in 82 observed frames covering 3.6 deg$^2$. The data reduction, image processing and source extraction were performed in a standard procedure using the \textsc{Elixir} pipeline and the \textsc{AstrOmatic} software, and eventually 351,635 sources have been extracted. The data quality is discussed in two regions (shallow and deep) separately, due to the difference in the total integration time (4,520 and 13,910 seconds). The 5$\sigma$ limiting magnitude, seeing FWHM, and the magnitude at 50 per cent completeness are 25.38 mag (25.79 mag in the deep region), 0.82 arcsec (0.94 arcsec) and 25.06 mag (25.45 mag), respectively. We study the galaxy merger fraction and its dependence on star formation mode in the5.4 square degrees of the North Ecliptic Pole-Wide field. We select 6352 galaxies withAKARI 9{\mu}m detections, and identify mergers among them using the Gini coefficientand M20derived from the Subaru/HSC optical images. We obtain the total infraredluminosity and star formation rate of galaxies using the spectral energy distributiontemplates based on one band, AKARI 9{\mu}m. We classify galaxies into three differentstar formation modes (i.e. starbursts, main sequence, and quiescent galaxies) andcalculate the merger fractions for each. We study the clustering property and physical parameters of gzK-colour-selected star-forming galaxies (sgzKs) based on the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope surveys over 0.55 deg2 in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole-Deep Field. Two-point correlation functions for two magnitude-limited cases, Ks < 21.1 (N = 234) and Ks < 21.5 (N = 428), are estimated using a single power-law function with the fixed slope of 0.8. The bias factors of sgzKs with Ks < 21.1 and 21.5 are 5.79 ± 1.07 and 4.00 ± 0.67, respectively, representing that sgzKs with z ∼ 1.7 reside in dark matter haloes more massive than $10^{13} ~\rm M_{\odot }$. We find that haloes hosting sgzKs with Ks < 21.5 evolve into haloes that host local massive galaxies with ∼6 L*. This suggests that sgzKs with Ks < 21.5 are likely to be predecessors of local massive galaxies. The evolutionary track of bias factor for host haloes of the bright sgzKs is similar to that of the bright passive extremely red objects, implying a possible connection between the two populations of galaxies. From the spectral energy distribution fitting, we estimate physical parameters and active galactic nucleus (AGN) contribution for 75 mid-infrared (MIR)-detected sgzKs with Ks < 21.5. The median values of stellar mass and star formation rate are 9.5 × 1010$\rm M_{\odot }$ and 162 $\rm M_{\odot }$ yr−1, respectively. MIR-detected sgzKs have a variety of AGN contributions ranging from 0 to 80 per cent. The number ratio of sgzKs with larger AGN contribution than 10 per cent is 30 per cent.

The $AKARI$ space infrared telescope has performed near- to mid-infrared (MIR) observations on the North Ecliptic Pole Wide (NEPW) field (5.4 deg$^2$) for about one year. $AKARI$ took advantage of its continuous nine photometric bands, compared with NASA's $Spitzer$ and WISE space telescopes, which had only four filters with a wide gap in the MIR. The $AKARI$ NEPW field lacked deep and homogeneous optical data, limiting the use of nearly half of the IR sources for extra-galactic studies owing to the absence of photometric redshifts (photo-zs). To remedy this, we have recently obtained deep optical imaging over the NEPW field with 5 bands ($g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, and $Y$) of the Hyper Suprime-Camera (HSC) on the Subaru 8m telescope. We optically identify AKARI-IR sources along with supplementary $Spitzer$ and WISE data as well as pre-existing optical data. In this work, we derive new photo-zs using a $\chi^2$ template-fitting method code ($Le$ $Phare$) and reliable photometry from 26 selected filters including HSC, $AKARI$, CFHT, Maidanak, KPNO, $Spitzer$ and WISE data. We take 2026 spectroscopic redshifts (spec-z) from all available spectroscopic surveys over the NEPW to calibrate and assess the accuracy of the photo-zs. At z < 1.5, we achieve a weighted photo-z dispersion of $\sigma_{\Delta{z/(1+z)}}$ = 0.053 with $\eta$ = 11.3% catastrophic errors., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Context. The North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field provides a unique set of panchromatic data, well suited for active galactic nuclei (AGN) studies. Selection of AGN candidates is often based on mid-infrared (MIR) measurements. Such method, despite its effectiveness, strongly reduces a catalog volume due to the MIR detection condition. Modern machine learning techniques can solve this problem by finding similar selection criteria using only optical and near-infrared (NIR) data. Aims. Aims of this work were to create a reliable AGN candidates catalog from the NEP field using a combination of optical SUBARU/HSC and NIR AKARI/IRC data and, consequently, to develop an efficient alternative for the MIR-based AKARI/IRC selection technique. Methods. A set of supervised machine learning algorithms was tested in order to perform an efficient AGN selection. Best of the models were formed into a majority voting scheme, which used the most popular classification result to produce the final AGN catalog. Additional analysis of catalog properties was performed in form of the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting via the CIGALE software. Results. The obtained catalog of 465 AGN candidates (out of 33 119 objects) is characterized by 73% purity and 64% completeness. This new classification shows consistency with the MIR-based selection. Moreover, 76% of the obtained catalog can be found only with the new method due to the lack of MIR detection for most of the new AGN candidates. It has been targeted many times since it was surveyed by the AKARI space telescope with its unique wavelength coverage from the near- to mid-infrared (mid-IR). Many follow-up observations have been carried out, making this field one of the most frequently observed areas with a variety of facilities, accumulating abundant panchromatic data from the X-ray to the radio wavelength range. Recently, a deep optical survey with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) at the Subaru telescope covered the NEP-Wide (NEPW) field, which enabled us to identify faint sources in the near- and mid-IR bands, and to improve the photometric redshift (photo-z) estimation. In this work, we present newly identified AKARI sources by the HSC survey, along with multiband photometry for 91 861 AKARI sources observed over the NEPW field. We release a new band-merged catalogue combining various photometric data from the GALEX UV to submillimetre (sub-mm) bands (e.g. Herschel/SPIRE, JCMT/SCUBA-2). About ∼20 000 AKARI sources are newly matched to the HSC data, most of which seem to be faint galaxies in the near- to mid-infrared AKARI bands. This catalogue is motivating a variety of current research, and will be increasingly useful as recently launched (eROSITA/ART-XC) and future space missions (such as JWST, Euclid, and SPHEREx) plan to take deep observations in the NEP field.

Context. Dusty high-z galaxies are extreme objects with high star formation rates (SFRs) and luminosities. Characterising the properties of this population and analysing their evolution over cosmic time is key to understanding galaxy evolution in the early Universe. Aims. We select a sample of high-z dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) and evaluate their position on the main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies, the well-known correlation between stellar mass and SFR. We aim to understand the causes of their high star formation and quantify the percentage of DSFGs that lie above the MS. Methods. We adopted a multi-wavelength approach with data from optical to submillimetre wavelengths from surveys at the North Ecliptic Pole to study a submillimetre sample of high-redshift galaxies. Two submillimetre selection methods were used, including: sources selected at 850 μm with the Sub-millimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2) SCUBA-2 instrument and Herschel-Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) selected sources (colour-colour diagrams and 500 μm risers), finding that 185 have good multi-wavelength coverage. The resulting sample of 185 high-z candidates was further studied by spectral energy distribution fitting with the CIGALE fitting code. We derived photometric redshifts, stellar masses, SFRs, and additional physical parameters, such as the infrared luminosity and active galactic nuclei (AGN) contribution. Results. We find that the Herschel-SPIRE selected DSFGs generally have higher redshifts (z = 2.57−0.09+0.08) than sources that are selected solely by the SCUBA-2 method (z = 1.45−0.06+0.21). We find moderate SFRs (797−50+108 M⊙ yr−1), which are typically lower than those found in other studies. We find that the different results in the literature are, only in part, due to selection effects, as even in the most extreme cases, SFRs are still lower than a few thousand solar masses per year. The difference in measured SFRs affects the position of DSFGs on the MS of galaxies; most of the DSFGs lie on the MS (60%). Finally, we find that the star formation efficiency (SFE) depends on the epoch and intensity of the star formation burst in the galaxy; the later the burst, the more intense the star formation. We discuss whether the higher SFEs in DSFGs could be due to mergers.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with hyperandrogenism, and we previously found that androgens activate endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in granulosa cells from patients with PCOS. In addition, recent studies demonstrated the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in granulosa cells from PCOS patients, which contribute to the pathology. Therefore, we hypothesized that androgens upregulate the receptor for AGEs (RAGE) expression in granulosa cells by activating ER stress, thereby increasing the accumulation of AGEs in these cells and contributing to the pathology. In the present study, we show that testosterone increases RAGE expression and AGE accumulation in cultured human granulosa-lutein cells (GLCs), and this is reduced by pretreatment with tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), an ER stress inhibitor in clinical use. Knockdown of the transcription factor C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), an unfolded protein response factor activated by ER stress, inhibits testosterone-induced RAGE expression and AGE accumulation. The expression of RAGE and the accumulation of AGEs are upregulated in granulosa cells from PCOS patients and dehydroepiandrosterone-induced PCOS mice. Administration of the RAGE inhibitor FPS-ZM1 or TUDCA to PCOS mice reduces RAGE expression and AGE accumulation in granulosa cells, improves their estrous cycle, and reduces the number of atretic antral follicles. In summary, our findings indicate that hyperandrogenism in PCOS increases the expression of RAGE and accumulation of AGEs in the ovary by activating ER stress, and that targeting the AGE-RAGE system, either by using a RAGE inhibitor or a clinically available ER stress inhibitor, may represent a novel approach to PCOS therapy.

Aim The cryopreservation of embryos is essential for assisted reproductive technology field. The aim of the present study is to examine the efficacy and ease of use of a new vitrification device, Kitasato Vitrification System (KVS), in cryopreservation of human embryos. Methods Human embryos at the cleavage or blastocyst stage were vitrified and warmed by KVS or Cryotop (control device). The survival of cleavage- and blastocyst-stage embryos and the developmental competence of cleavage-stage embryos were evaluated. Four individuals inexperienced in vitrification and warming embryos tested both KVS and Cryotop. The vitrification time and the detachment time of the embryos were evaluated. Results At the cleavage stage, there were no significant differences in the survival rate and the development rate to the blastocyst stage between KVS and Cryotop (100 vs 96.8% and 63.3 vs 61.3%, respectively). At the blastocyst stage, there was no significant difference in the re-expansion rate between KVS and Cryotop (100 vs 88.9%). The vitrification time was shorter for KVS than Cryotop. There was no significant difference in the detachment time between KVS and Cryotop. Conclusion Kitasato Vitrification System is easy to operate, even for inexperienced users, and the viability of human embryos vitrified by KVS is comparable to that of Cryotop, a widely used vitrification device.

Observations of the molecular gas in galaxies are vital to understanding the evolution and star-forming histories of galaxies. However, galaxies with molecular gas maps of their whole discs having sufficient resolution to distinguish galactic structures are severely lacking. Millimeter wavelength studies at a high angular resolution across multiple lines and transitions are particularly needed, severely limiting our ability to infer the universal properties of molecular gas in galaxies. Hence, we conducted a legacy project with the 45 m telescope of the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, called the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING), which simultaneously observed 147 galaxies with high far-infrared flux in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=1-0$ lines. The total molecular gas mass was derived using the standard CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and found to be positively correlated with the total stellar mass derived from the WISE $3.4 \mu$m band data. The fraction of the total molecular gas mass to the total stellar mass in galaxies does not depend on their Hubble types nor the existence of a galactic bar, although when galaxies in individual morphological types are investigated separately, the fraction seems to decrease with the total stellar mass in early-type galaxies and vice versa in late-type galaxies. No differences in the distribution of the total molecular gas mass, stellar mass, and the total molecular gas to stellar mass ratio was observed between barred and non-barred galaxies, which is likely the result of our sample selection criteria, in that we prioritized observing FIR bright (and thus molecular gas-rich) galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ; 47 pages, 5 tables, 29 figures. Endometriosis exerts detrimental effects on ovarian physiology and compromises follicular health. Granulosa cells from patients with endometriosis are characterized by increased apoptosis, as well as high oxidative stress. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, a local factor closely associated with oxidative stress, has emerged as a critical regulator of ovarian function. We hypothesized that ER stress is activated by high oxidative stress in granulosa cells in ovaries with endometrioma and that this mediates oxidative stress–induced apoptosis. Human granulosa-lutein cells (GLCs) from patients with endometrioma expressed high levels of mRNAs associated with the unfolded protein response (UPR). In addition, the levels of phosphorylated ER stress sensor proteins, inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1) and double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase-like ER kinase (PERK), were elevated in granulosa cells from patients with endometrioma. Given that ER stress results in phosphorylation of ER stress sensor proteins and induces UPR factors, these findings indicate that these cells were under ER stress. H2O2, an inducer of oxidative stress, increased expression of UPR-associated mRNAs in cultured human GLCs, and this effect was abrogated by pretreatment with tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), an ER stress inhibitor in clinical use. Treatment with H2O2 increased apoptosis and the activity of the pro-apoptotic factors caspase-8 and caspase-3, both of which were attenuated by TUDCA. Our findings suggest that activated ER stress induced by high oxidative stress in granulosa cells in ovaries with endometrioma mediates apoptosis of these cells, leading to ovarian dysfunction in patients with endometriosis.

We study the clustering property of extremely red objects (EROs) using Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) surveys with 0.55 deg2 in the AKARI north ecliptic pole (NEP) deep field. EROs are selected by the color criterion of r′ − Ks > 3.66, which is equivalent to (R − Ks)Vega > 5. We conducted the clustering analysis for two magnitude-limited cases, Ks < 20.3 (N = 363) and Ks < 20.9 (N = 727), using two-point angular correlation represented by a single power-law function. By fixing a power-law (with 0.8), the correlation lengths of EROs with Ks < 20.3 and Ks < 20.9 are 9.10 ± 1.86 and 7.81 ± 1.21 h−1 Mpc, respectively. We find that bias factors of EROs with Ks < 20.3 and Ks < 20.9 are 3.19 ± 0.59 and 2.83 ± 0.40, respectively, revealing that EROs reside in dark matter halos heavier than $\sim 10^{13}\, M_{\odot }$. To investigate possible descendants of EROs with Ks < 20.9, we calculate how the bias for dark matter halos that host EROs evolves by accounting for mass growth of halos along the redshift. We find that halos hosting EROs evolve into halos hosting local massive galaxies with 2–$7\, L^{*}$. It suggests that passive EROs with Ks < 20.9 are likely to be progenitors of massive galaxies in the present universe. The comparison between passive EROs (pEROs) and star-forming EROs (sEROs) classified by near-infrared colors shows that pEROs seem to be connected with more massive local galaxies. By fitting spectral energy distributions (SEDs), we estimate active galactic nucleus (AGN) contribution for 68 sEROs which are selected in mid-IR bands. AGN contributions to the IR luminosity are less than $10\%$ except for six sEROs. At least in the IR-selected sEROs, the contribution of AGN seems to be not significant.

We examined radial variations in molecular-gas based star formation efficiency (SFE), which is defined as star formation rate per unit molecular gas mass, for 80 galaxies selected from the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies project (Sorai et al. 2019). The radial variations in SFE for individual galaxies are typically a factor of 2 -- 3, which suggests that SFE is nearly constant along galactocentric radius. We found the averaged SFE in 80 galaxies of $(1.69 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-9}$ yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with Leroy et al. 2008 if we consider the contribution of helium to the molecular gas mass evaluation and the difference in the assumed initial mass function between two studies. We compared SFE among different morphological (i.e., SA, SAB, and SB) types, and found that SFE within the inner radii ($r/r_{25} < 0.3$, where $r_{25}$ is $B$-band isophotal radius at 25 mag arcsec$^{-2}$) of SB galaxies is slightly higher than that of SA and SAB galaxies. This trend can be partly explained by the dependence of SFE on global stellar mass, which probably relates to the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor through the metallicity. For two representative SB galaxies in our sample, NGC 3367 and NGC 7479, the ellipse of $r/r_{25}$ = 0.3 seems to cover not only the central region but also the inner part of the disk, mainly the bar. These two galaxies show higher SFE in the bar than in spiral arms. However, we found an opposite trend in NGC 4303; SFE is lower in the bar than in spiral arms, which is consistent with earlier studies (e.g., Momose et al. 2010). We present the results of $^{12}$CO($J$=1-0) and $^{13}$CO($J$=1-0) simultaneous mappings toward the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 4303 as a part of the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) project. Barred spiral galaxies often show lower star-formation efficiency (SFE) in their bar region compared to the spiral arms. In this paper, we examine the relation between the SFEs and the volume densities of molecular gas $n(\rm{H}_2)$ in the eight different regions within the galactic disk with CO data combined with archival far-ultraviolet and 24 $\mu$m data. We confirmed that SFE in the bar region is lower by 39% than that in the spiral arms. Moreover, velocity-alignment stacking analysis was performed for the spectra in the individual regions. The integrated intensity ratios of $^{12}$CO to $^{13}$CO ($R_{12/13}$) range from 10 to 17 as the results of stacking. Fixing a kinetic temperature of molecular gas, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ was derived from $R_{12/13}$ via non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) analysis. The density $n(\rm{H}_2)$ in the bar is lower by 31-37% than that in the arms and there is a rather tight positive correlation between SFEs and $n(\rm{H}_2)$, with a correlation coefficient of $\sim 0.8$. Furthermore, we found a dependence of $n(\rm{H}_2)$ on the velocity dispersion of inter-molecular clouds ($\Delta V/ \sin i$). Specifically, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ increases as $\Delta V/ \sin i$ increases when $\Delta V/ \sin i < 100$ km s$^{-1}$. On the other hand, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ decreases as $\Delta V/ \sin i$ increases when $\Delta V/ \sin i > 100$ km s$^{-1}$. These relations indicate that the variations of SFE could be caused by the volume densities of molecular gas, and the volume densities could be governed by the dynamical influence such as cloud-cloud collisions, shear and enhanced inner-cloud turbulence., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The $^{12}$CO $(J=1\rightarrow0)$ velocity fields of a sample of 20 nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) legacy project of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, have been analyzed by Fourier decomposition to determine their basic kinematic properties, such as circular and noncircular velocities. On average, the investigated barred (SAB and SB) galaxies exhibit a ratio of noncircular to circular velocities of molecular gas larger by a factor of 1.5-2 than non-barred (SA) spiral galaxies at radii within the bar semimajor axis $a_\mathrm{b}$ at 1 kpc resolution, with a maximum at a radius of $R/a_\mathrm{b}\sim0.3$. Residual velocity field images, created by subtracting model velocity fields from the data, reveal that this trend is caused by kpc-scale streaming motions of molecular gas in the bar region. Applying a new method based on radial velocity reversal, we estimated the corotation radius $R_\mathrm{CR}$ and bar pattern speed $\Omega_\mathrm{b}$ in seven SAB and SB systems. The ratio of the corotation to bar radius is found to be in a range of $\mathcal{R}\equiv R_\mathrm{CR}/a_\mathrm{b}\sim0.8\mathrm{-}1.6$, suggesting that intermediate (SBb-SBc), luminous barred spiral galaxies host fast and slow rotator bars. Tentative negative correlations are found for $\Omega_\mathrm{b}$ vs. $a_\mathrm{b}$ and $\Omega_\mathrm{b}$ vs. total stellar mass $M_\ast$, indicating that bars in massive disks are larger and rotate slower, possibly a consequence of angular momentum transfer. The AKARI North Ecliptic Pole Deep Field is a natural location to accomplish deep extragalactic surveys. It is supported by comprehensive ancillary data extending from radio to X-ray wavelengths, which have been used to classify radio sources as radio-loud and radio-quiet objects and to create a catalogue of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This has been achieved by using a radio-optical classification and colour-colour diagrams rather than the more usual way based on spectroscopy Furthermore, we explore whether this technique can be extended by using a far-Infrared (FIR) colour-colour diagram which has been used to identify 268 high redshift candidates.

We present the physical properties of AKARI sources without optical counterparts in optical images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru telescope. Using the AKARI infrared (IR) source catalog and HSC optical catalog, we select 583 objects that do not have HSC counterparts in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) wide survey field ($\sim 5$ deg$^{2}$). Because the HSC limiting magnitude is deep ($g_{\rm AB}$ $\sim 28.6$), these are good candidates for extremely red star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs), possibly at high redshifts. We compile multi-wavelength data out to 500 $\mu$m and use it for Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE to investigate the physical properties of AKARI galaxies without optical counterparts. We also compare their physical quantities with AKARI mid-IR selected galaxies with HSC counterparts. The estimated redshifts of AKARI objects without HSC counterparts range up to $z\sim 4$, significantly higher than that of AKARI objects with HSC counterparts. We find that: (i) 3.6 $-$ 4.5 $\mu$m color, (ii) AGN luminosity, (iii) stellar mass, (iv) star formation rate, and (v) $V$-band dust attenuation in the interstellar medium of AKARI objects without HSC counterparts are systematically larger than those of AKARI objects with counterparts. These results suggest that our sample includes luminous, heavily dust-obscured SFGs/AGNs at $z\sim 1-4$ that are missed by previous optical surveys, providing very interesting targets for the coming James Webb Space Telescope era., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, and 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Aim The objective of this study is to determine the factors associated with successful pregnancy in women of late reproductive age with uterine fibroids who undergo embryo cryopreservation before surgery (ECBS). Methods Patients who underwent in vitro fertilization treatment with controlled ovarian stimulation from November 2010 to January 2017 in our university hospital were included. Twenty-two patients older than 35 years of age at the first visit with cavity-distorting uterine fibroids underwent ECBS, a three-step therapeutic approach consisting of oocyte pick-up, myomectomy and embryo transfer (ET), which are performed in this order. We retrospectively calculated the pregnancy rate and determined the factors associated with successful pregnancy. Results The mean age at ET of the patients who underwent ECBS was 40.9 years, with a pregnancy rate per ET of 36.8% (21/57). Of 22 patients, 10 (45.5%) successfully continued pregnancy beyond 12 weeks of gestation (ongoing pregnancy). An ongoing pregnancy was observed only among the patients with more than three frozen embryos. The ongoing pregnancy rates of patients with ≤five fibroids and ≤5 cm in the maximal diameter were significantly higher compared to the respective remaining group (90.0% vs 14.3% and 87.5% vs 33.3%). Conclusion ECBS is an effective strategy for infertile women of late reproductive age with cavity-distorting uterine fibroids, especially when it is applied to the patients who can freeze at least three embryos before myomectomy, with five or less fibroids smaller than 5 cm in the maximal diameter.

Observing high resolution optical to infrared spectra is crucial to understanding how energy is generated in galaxies. We present follow-up optical Keck-II/DEIMOS and infrared Keck-I/MOSFIRE spectra of ∼200 galaxies in the AKARI/North Ecliptic Pole Deep survey region at intermediate redshift. From rest-frame optical emission lines, we classify most of our objects as star-forming (53%), with the MIR selection favoring relatively massive galaxies (median log M/M⊙∼ 10.3). In addition, we combine our spectroscopic redshifts with UV to FIR photometry as inputs in order to model SEDs with CIGALE, and we measure the PAH 7.7 μm luminosity as an SFR indicator.

Mass, metallicity, and star formation rate (SFR) of a galaxy are crucial parameters in understanding galaxy formation and evolution. However, the relation among these is still a matter of debate for luminous infrared galaxies, which carry a bulk of SFR budget of the universe at $z\sim1$. We have investigated the relation among stellar mass, gas-phase oxygen abundance, and SFR of AKARI-detected mid-IR galaxies at $z\sim0.88$ in the AKARI NEP deep field. We observed about 350 AKARI sources with Subaru/FMOS NIR spectrograph, and detected secure and expected H$\alpha$ emission lines from 25 and 44 galaxies, respectively. The SFR of our sample is almost constant ($\sim 25M_{\odot}/yr$) over the stellar mass range of our sample. Compared with main-sequence (MS) galaxies at a similar redshift range, the average SFR of our detected sample is comparable for massive galaxies ($\sim10^{10.58}~M_{\odot}$), while higher by $\sim$0.6dex for less massive galaxies ($\sim 10^{10.05}~M_{\odot}$). We measure metallicities from the [NII]/H$\alpha$ emission line ratio. We find that the mass-metallicity relation of our individually measured sources agrees with that for optical-selected star-forming galaxies at $z\sim0.1$, while metallicities of stacked spectra agree with that of MS galaxies at $z\sim0.78$. Considering high SFR of individually measured sources, FMR of the IR galaxies is different from that at $z\sim0.1$. However, on the mass-metallicity plane, they are consistent with the MS galaxies, highlighting higher SFR of the IR galaxies. This suggests the evolutionary path of our IR galaxies is different from that of MS galaxies. A possible physical interpretation includes that the star-formation activities of IR galaxies at $z\sim0.88$ in our sample are enhanced by interaction and/or merger of galaxies, but the inflow of metal-poor gas is not yet induced, keeping the metallicity intact., Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

There exists strong evidence supporting the co-evolution of central supermassive black holes and their host galaxies; however it is still under debate how such a relation comes about and whether it is relevant for all or only a subset of galaxies. An important mechanism connecting AGN to their host galaxies is AGN feedback, potentially heating up or even expelling gas from galaxies. AGN feedback may hence be responsible for the eventual quenching of star formation and halting of galaxy growth. A rich multi-wavelength dataset ranging from the X-ray regime (Chandra), to far-IR (Herschel), and radio (WSRT) is available for the North Ecliptic Pole field, most notably surveyed by the AKARI infrared space telescope, covering a total area on the sky of 5.4 sq. degrees. We investigate the star formation properties and possible signatures of radio feedback mechanisms in the host galaxies of 237 radio sources below redshift z

How does the presence of an AGN influence the total SFR estimates of galaxies and change their distribution with respect to the Galaxy Main Sequence? To contribute to solving this question, we study a sample of 1133 sources detected in the North Ecliptic Pole field (NEP) by AKARI and Herschel. We create a multi-wavelength dataset for these galaxies and we fit their multi-wavelength Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) using the whole spectral regime (from 0.1 to 500 µm). We perform the fit using three procedures: LePhare and two optimised codes for identifying AGN tracers from the SED analysis. In this work we present an overview of the comparison between the estimates of the Infrared bolometric luminosities (between 8 and 1000 µm) and the AGN fractions obtained exploiting these different procedures. In particular, by estimating the AGN contribution in four different wavelength ranges (5-40 µm, 10-20 µm, 20-40 µm and 8-1000 µm) we show how the presence of an AGN affects the PAH emission by suppressing the ratio L8 µm/ L4.5 µm as a function of the considered wavelength range.

We report the results of a multi-wavelength study in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) deep field and examine the far infrared-radio correlation (FIRC) for high and low redshift objects. We have found a correlation between the GMRT data at 610 MHz and the Herschel data at 250µm that has been used to define a spectral index. This spectral index shows no evolution against redshift. As a result of the study, we show a radio colour-infrared diagram that can be used as a redshift indicator.

We performed near-diffraction-limited (~0.4 FWHM) N-band imaging of one of the nearest Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in M51 with 8.2m Subaru telescope to study the nuclear structure and spectral energy distribution (SED) at 8-13 um. We found that the nucleus is composed of an unresolved core (at ~13 pc resolution, or intrinsic size corrected for the instrumental effect of, 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present high-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) imaging, nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and archival Spitzer spectra for 22 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs; L bol ≲ 10 42 erg s -1). Infrared (IR) observations may advance our understanding of the accretion flows in LLAGNs, the fate of the obscuring torus at low accretion rates, and, perhaps, the star formation histories of these objects. However, while comprehensively studied in higher-luminosity Seyferts and quasars, the nuclear IR properties of LLAGNs have not yet been well determined. We separate the present LLAGN sample into three categories depending on their Eddington ratio and radio emission, finding different IR characteristics for each class. (1) At the low-luminosity, low-Eddington-ratio (log L bol/L Edd < -4.6) end of the sample, we identify >host- dominated> galaxies with strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon bands that may indicate active (circum-)nuclear star formation. (2) Some very radio-loud objects are also present at these low Eddington ratios. The IR emission in these nuclei is dominated by synchrotron radiation, and some are likely to be unobscured type 2 AGNs that genuinely lack a broad-line region. (3) At higher Eddington ratios, strong, compact nuclear sources are visible in the MIR images. The nuclear SEDs of these galaxies are diverse; some resemble typical Seyfert nuclei, while others lack a well-defined MIR >dust bump.> Strong silicate emission is present in many of these objects. We speculate that this, together with high ratios of silicate strength to hydrogen column density, could suggest optically thin dust and low dust-to-gas ratios, in accordance with model predictions that LLAGNs do not host a Seyfert-like obscuring torus. We anticipate that detailed modeling of the new data and SEDs in terms of accretion disk, jet, radiatively inefficient accretion flow, and torus components will provide further insights into the nuclear structures and processes of LLAGNs. © © 2012. X-ray and near-infrared ($J$-$H$-$K_{\rm s}$) observations of the Galactic black hole binary GX 339--4 in the low/hard state were performed with Suzaku and IRSF in 2009 March. The spectrum in the 0.5--300 keV band is dominated by thermal Comptonization of multicolor disk photons, with a small contribution from a direct disk component, indicating that the inner disk is almost fully covered by hot corona with an electron temperature of $\approx$175 keV. The Comptonizing corona has at least two optical depths, $\tau \approx 1,0.4$. Analysis of the iron-K line profile yields an inner disk radius of $(13.3^{+6.4}_{-6.0}) R_{\rm g}$ ($R_{\rm g} $ represents the gravitational radius $GM/c^2$), with the best-fit inclination angle of $\approx50^\circ$. This radius is consistent with that estimated from the continuum fit by assuming the conservation of photon numbers in Comptonization. Our results suggest that the standard disk of GX 339--4 is likely truncated before reaching the innermost stable circular orbit (for a non rotating black hole) in the low/hard state at $\sim$1% of the Eddington luminosity. The one-day averaged near-infrared light curves are found to be correlated with hard X-ray flux with $F_{\rm Ks} \propto F_{\rm X}^{0.45}$. The flatter near infrared $\nu F_{\nu}$ spectrum than the radio one suggests that the optically thin synchrotron radiation from the compact jets dominates the near-infrared flux. Based on a simple analysis, we estimate the magnetic field and size of the jet base to be $5\times10^4$ G and $6\times 10^8$ cm, respectively. We present the results of infrared L-band (3-4 micron) slit spectroscopy of 30 PG QSOs at z < 0.17, the representative sample of local high-luminosity, optically selected AGNs. The 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature is used to probe nuclear (< a few kpc) starburst activity and to investigate the connections between AGNs and nuclear starbursts in PG QSOs. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in the individual spectra of 5/30 of the observed PG QSOs. We construct a composite spectrum of PAH-undetected PG QSOs and discern the presence of the 3.3 micron PAH emission therein. We estimate the nuclear-starburst and AGN luminosities from the observed 3.3 micron PAH emission and 3.35 micron continuum luminosities, respectively, and find that the nuclear-starburst-to-AGN luminosity ratios in PG QSOs are similar to those of previously studied AGN populations with lower luminosities, suggesting that AGN-nuclear starburst connections are valid over the wide luminosity range of AGNs in the local universe. The observed nuclear-starburst-to-AGN luminosity ratios in PG QSOs with available supermassive black hole masses are comparable to a theoretical prediction based on the assumption that the growth of a supermassive black hole is controlled by starburst-induced turbulence., 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (No. 63, 2011 March, Subaru special issue)

We present near-infrared K- (1.9-2.5 micrometer) and L- (2.8-4.2 micrometer) band spectroscopy of 22 Seyfert nuclei. We use two methods to investigate the presence of nuclear starbursts: (1) the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature at lambda_rest = 3.3 micrometer in the rest frame of L-band spectrum (a starburst indicator) and (2) the CO absorption feature at lambda_rest = 2.3-2.4 micrometer in the rest frame of the K-band spectrum, originating in the CO molecule. We clearly detected the 3.3 micrometer PAH emission features in five objects and the CO absorption features in 17 objects. Seyfert 2 galaxies tend to show bluer K-L colors compared with Seyfert 1 galaxies. We interpret the discrepancy as resulting from relative strength of stellar emission because AGN emission is affected by dust extinction. The 3.3 micrometer PAH emission luminosity (L_3.3PAH) distributions for the Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s are very similar when normalized to the AGN power. Star-formation rates estimated from L_3.3PAH could be large enough to inflate the dusty torus by supernova explosion. We find that L_3.3PAH positively correlates with N-band luminosity with small aperture over a wide AGN luminosity range, and is independent of physical area we probed. We report on the results of systematic infrared 2.5-5 micron spectroscopy of 45 nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.3 using IRC onboard the AKARI satellite. This paper investigates whether the luminosities of these ULIRGs are dominated by starburst activity, or optically elusive buried AGNs are energetically important. Our criteria include the strengths of the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features and the optical depths of absorption features at 3.1 micron due to ice-covered dust grains and at 3.4 micron from bare carbonaceous dust grains. Because of the AKARI IRC's spectroscopic capability in the full 2.5-5 micron wavelength range, unaffected by Earth's atmosphere, we can apply this energy diagnostic method to ULIRGs at z > 0.15. We estimate the intrinsic luminosities of extended (several kpc), modestly obscured (Av < 15 mag) starburst activity based on the 3.3 micron PAH emission luminosities measured in AKARI IRC slitless spectra, and confirm that such starbursts are energetically unimportant in nearby ULIRGs. In roughly half of the observed ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts, we find signatures of luminous energy sources that produce no PAH emission and/or are more centrally concentrated than the surrounding dust. We interpret these energy sources as buried AGNs. The fraction of ULIRGs with detectable buried AGN signatures increases with increasing infrared luminosity. Our overall results support the scenario that luminous buried AGNs are important in many ULIRGs at z < 0.3 classified optically as non-Seyferts, and that the optical undetectability of such buried AGNs occurs merely because of a large amount of nuclear dust, which can make the sightline of even the lowest dust column density opaque to the ionizing radiation of the AGNs., 48 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (AKARI special issue)

We study the mass–metallicity relation and fundamental relation (FMR) for infrared bright galaxies (IR galaxies) at z ~ 0.9 discovered by AKARI NEP-Deep survey. The main result of this work is that metallicity of IR galaxies surprisingly match optical selected galaxies at a given mass even their star formation rates are different, which may imply that optical and IR selected galaxies follow similar star formation histories, and the starbursts in the IR galaxies do not give a strong impact in changing metallicity because of the short duration time.

We present the result of our near infrared J(λ = 1.25 μm), H(λ = 1.63 μm), and Ksband (λ = 2.14 μm) imaging of ultraluminous (LIR >10 L ) and luminous (LIR = 1011−12 L ) infrared galaxies (ULIRGs and LIRGs), to investigate their relationship through properties of their host galaxies. We find that (1) for single-nucleus ULIRGs and LIRGs, their spheroidal host galaxies have similar properties, but ULIRGs display a substantially higher level of nuclear activity than LIRGs, suggesting that their infrared luminosity difference comes primarily from the different level of current nuclear activity. We infer that LIRGs and ULIRGs have similar progenitor galaxies, follow similar evolutionary processes, and may evolve into optically-selected QSOs. (2) Largely-separated multiple-nuclei ULIRGs have significantly brighter host galaxies than single-nucleus ULIRGs and LIRGs in Ks-band, indicating that multiple-nuclei ULIRGs have a bias towards mergers of intrinsically large progenitor galaxies, in order to produce high infrared luminosity (LIR >10 L ) even at the early merging stage. (3) We derive dust extinction of host galaxies of ULIRGs and LIRGs to be AV ∼ 14 mag in the optical or equivalently AK ∼ 0.8 mag in the near-infrared Ks-band, based on the comparison of host galaxy’s luminosities in the J-, H-, and Ks-bands.

Although assisted reproductive technology (ART) is suspected to increase the risk of placenta previa, a life-threatening complication of pregnancy, the reason is poorly understood. We recruited consecutive 318 pregnancies conceived by ART in our clinic and examined relation of ten variables, i.e. maternal age, gravidity, parity, male or female fetus, previous abortion, previous cesarean delivery, endometriosis, ovulatory disorder, tubal disease, and male infertility, to placenta previa, by logistic regression analysis. As a result, we found that endometriosis (odds ratio = 15.1; 95% CI = 7.6-500.0) and tubal disease (odds ratio = 4.4; 95% CI = 1.1-26.3) were significantly associated with placenta previa. It would be preferable to take the increased risk of placenta previa into account in treating ART pregnancy with endometriosis and tubal disease.

A mid-infrared (MIR) imager and spectrometer is being investigated for possible construction in the early operation of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Combined with the MIR adaptive optics (AO) system (MIRAO), the instrument will afford ~15 times higher sensitivity and ~4 times better spatial resolution (0.07”) at 10μm compared to 8m-class telescopes. Additionally, through exploiting the large collection area of the TMT, the high-dispersion spectroscopy mode will be unrivaled by other ground- and space-based facilities. These combined capabilities offer the possibility for breakthrough science, as well as ‘workhorse’ observing modes of imaging and low/moderate spectral resolution. In this paper we summarize the primary science drivers that are guiding the instrument design.

Context. Caustic crossing is the clearest signature of binary lenses in microlensing. In the present context, this signature is diluted by the large source star but a detailed analysis has allowed the companion signal to be extracted.Aims. MOA 2009-BLG-411 was detected on August 5, 2009 by the MOA-Collaboration. Alerted as a high-magnification event, it was sensitive to planets. Suspected anomalies in the light curve were not confirmed by a real-time model, but further analysis revealed small deviations from a single lens extended source fit.Methods. Thanks to observations by all the collaborations, this event was well monitored. We first decided to characterize the source star properties by using a more refined method than the classical one: we measure the interstellar absorption along the line of sight in five different passbands (VIJHK). Secondly, we model the lightcurve by using the standard technique: make (s,q,α) grids to look for local minima and refine the results by using a downhill method (Markov chain Monte Carlo). Finally, we use a Galactic model to estimate the physical properties of the lens components.Results. We find that the source star is a giant G star with radius 9 R⊙. The grid search gives two local minima, which correspond to the theoretical degeneracy s ≡ s-1. We find that the lens is composed of a brown dwarf secondary of mass MS = 0.05 M⊙ orbiting a primary M-star of mass MP = 0.18 M⊙. We also reveal a new mass-ratio degeneracy for the central caustics of close binaries.Conclusions. As far as we are aware, this is the first detection using the microlensing technique of a binary system in our Galaxy composed of an M-star and a brown dwarf. Context. We have obtained high-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) imaging, nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and archival Spitzer spectra for 22 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN; L_bol < 5 x 10^42 erg/s). Infrared (IR) observations may advance our understanding of the accretion flows in LLAGN, the fate of the obscuring torus at low accretion rates, and, perhaps, the star formation histories of these objects. However, while comprehensively studied in higher-luminosity Seyferts and quasars, the nuclear IR properties of LLAGN have not yet been well-determined. In these proceedings we summarise the results for the LLAGN at the relatively high-luminosity, high-Eddington ratio end of the sample. Strong, compact nuclear sources are visible in the MIR images of these objects, with luminosities consistent with or slightly in execss of that predicted by the standard MIR/X-ray relation. Their broadband nuclear SEDs are diverse; some resemble typical Seyfert nuclei, while others possess less of a well-defined MIR ``dust bump''. Strong silicate emission is present in many of these objects. We speculate that this, together with high ratios of silicate strength to hydrogen column density, could suggest optically thin dust and low dust-to-gas ratios, in accordance with model predictions that LLAGN do not host a Seyfert-like obscuring torus., 8 pages, 4 figures, to appear in "The Central Kiloparsec in Galactic Nuclei: Astronomy at High Angular Resolution 2011", open access Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS), published by IOP Publishing

We present the results of a ground-based, high spatial resolution infrared 18 micron imaging study of nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), using the Subaru 8.2-m and Gemini South 8.1-m telescopes. The diffraction-limited images routinely achieved with these telescopes in the Q-band (17-23 micron) allow us to investigate the detailed spatial distribution of infrared emission in these LIRGs. We then investigate whether the emission surface brightnesses are modest, as observed in starbursts, or are so high that luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs; high emission surface brightness energy sources) are indicated. The sample consists of 18 luminous buried AGN candidates and starburst-classified LIRGs identified in earlier infrared spectroscopy. We find that the infrared 18 micron emission from the buried AGN candidates is generally compact, and the estimated emission surface brightnesses are high, sometimes exceeding the maximum value observed in and theoretically predicted for a starburst phenomenon. The starburst-classified LIRGs usually display spatially extended 18 micron emission and the estimated emission surface brightnesses are modest, within the range sustained by a starburst phenomenon. The general agreement between infrared spectroscopic and imaging energy diagnostic methods suggests that both are useful tools for understanding the hidden energy sources of the dusty LIRG population., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in AJ (No. 141, 2011 May issue). We report high resolution 12CO(J = 2-1), 13CO(J = 2-1), and 12CO(J = 3-2) imaging of the Seyfert 1/starburst ring galaxy NGC 1097 with the Submillimeter Array to study the physical and kinematic properties of the 1-kpc circumnuclear starburst ring. Individual star clusters as detected in the HST map of Pa_alpha line emission have been used to determine the star formation rate, and are compared with the properties of the molecular gas. The molecular ring has been resolved into individual clumps at GMA-scale of 200--300 pc in all three CO lines. The intersection between the dust lanes and the starburst ring, which is associated with orbit-crowding region, is resolved into two physically/kinematically distinct features in the 1.5x1.0 (105x70 pc) 12CO(J = 2-1) map. The clumps associated with the dust lanes have broader line width, higher surface gas density, and lower star formation rate, while the narrow line clumps associated with the starburst ring have opposite characteristics. Toomre-Q value under unity at the radius of the ring suggests that the molecular ring is gravitationally unstable to fragment at the scale of the GMA. The line widths and surface density of gas mass of the clumps show an azimuthal variation related to the large scale dynamics. The star formation rate, on the other hand, is not significantly affected by the dynamics, but has a correlation with the intensity ratio of 12CO (J = 3-2) and 12CO(J = 2-1), which traces the denser gas associated with star formation. Our resolved CO map, especially in the orbit-crowding region, for the first time demonstrates observationally that the physical/kinematic properties of the GMAs are affected by the large scale bar-potential dynamics in NGC 1097., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present the results on millimeter interferometric observations of four luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), Arp 220, Mrk 231, IRAS 08572+3915, and VV 114, and one Wolf-Rayet galaxy, He 2-10, using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA). Both the HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) molecular lines were observed simultaneously and their brightness-temperature ratios were derived. High-quality infrared L-band (2.8-4.1 micron) spectra were also obtained for the four LIRGs to better constrain their energy sources deeply buried in dust and molecular gas. When combined with other LIRGs we have previously observed with NMA, the final sample comprised nine LIRGs (12 LIRGs' nuclei) with available interferometric HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) data-sufficient to investigate the overall trend in comparison with known AGNs and starburst galaxies. We found that LIRGs with luminous buried AGN signatures at other wavelengths tend to show high HCN(1-0)/HCO+(1-0) brightness-temperature ratios as seen in AGN-dominated galaxies, while the Wolf-Rayet galaxy He 2-10 displays a small ratio. An enhanced HCN abundance in the interstellar gas surrounding a strongly X-ray-emitting AGN, as predicted by some chemical calculations, is a natural explanation of our results., 43 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal.
