Semi-solid alloys are deformed in a wide range of casting processes; an improved understanding and modelling capability is required to minimise defect formation and optimise productivity. Here we combine thin-sample in-situ X-ray radiography of semisolid Al-Cu alloy deformation at 40–70% solid with 2D coupled lattice Boltzmann method - discrete element method (LBM-DEM) simulations. The simulations quantitatively capture the key features of the in-situ experiments, including (i) the local contraction and dilation of the grain assembly during shear deformation; (ii) the heterogeneous strain fields and localisation features; (iii) increases in local liquid pressure in regions where liquid was expelled from the free surface in the experiment; and (iv) decreases in liquid pressure in regions where surface menisci are sucked-in in experiments. The verified DEM simulations provide new insights into the role of initial solid fraction on the stress-deformation response and support the hypothesis that the behaviour of semi-solid alloys can be described using critical state soil mechanics.

Events with a large rapidity gap in deep inelastic scattering with Q2 greater-than-or-equal-to 10 GeV2 have been studied in the ZEUS detector. The properties of these events with W > 140 GeV are consistent with a leading twist diffractive production mechanism. In the laboratory frame, with E(T)jet greater-than-or-equal-to 4 GeV, 15% of the events are of the 1-jet type with negligible 2-jet production. The single jet is back-to-back in azimuth with the scattered electron. No energy flow is observed between the jet and the proton direction. With a lower jet transverse energy cut 2-jet production is observed both in the laboratory and the gamma*p centre-of-mass systems, demonstrating the presence of hard scattering in the virtual photon proton interactions that give rise to large rapidity gap events.

The gluon momentum density xg(x, Q(2)) of the proton was extracted at Q(2) = 20 GeV2 for small values of x between 4 x 10(-4) and 10(-2) from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F-2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F-2 at low x constrained by measurements from NMC at larger x; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x.

- Abstract
The ZEUS detector has been used to measure the proton structure function F-2. During 1993 HERA collided 26.7 GeV electrons on 820 GeV protons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.54 pb(-1), representing a twenty fold increase in statistics compared to that of 1992. Results are presented for 7 < Q(2) < 10(4) GeV2 and x values as low as 3 x 10(-4). The rapid rise in F-2 as x decreases observed previously is now studied in greater detail and persists for Q(2) values up to 500 GeV2.

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep --> jet + X at Q(2) below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb(-1). These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < eta(jet) < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the eta - phi plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < eta(jet)(gamma p CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to similar to 300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to x(y) similar to 10(-2). Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured eta(jet) and E(T)(jet) distributions.

Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the gamma p centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with a colourless object in the proton.

Jets in photoproduction events have been studied with the ZEUS detector for gammap centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 to 2 50 GeV. The inclusive jet distributions give evidence for the dominance of resolved photon interactions. In the di-jet sample the direct processes are for the first time clearly isolated. Di-jet cross sections for the resolved and direct processes are given in a restricted kinematic range.

Energy flows in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are investigated at a center-of-mass energy of 296 GeV for the range Q2 greater-than-or-equal-to 10 GeV2 using the ZEUS detector. A comparison is made between events with and without a large rapidity gap between the hadronic system and the proton direction. The energy flows, corrected for detector acceptance and resolution, are shown for these two classes of events in both the HERA laboratory frame and the Breit frame. From the differences in the shapes of these energy flows we conclude that QCD radiation is suppressed in the large-rapidity-gap events compared to the events without a large rapidity gap.

Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, sigma(el)gammap, inelastic diffractive production, sigma(d)gammap, non-diffractive production, sigma(nd)gammap, as well as the total cross section, sigma(tot)gammap, have been measured at an average gammap center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The resulting values are sigma(el)gammap = 18 +/- 7 mub, sigma(d)gammap = 33 +/- 8 mub, sigma(nd)gammap = 91 +/- 11 mub, and sigma(tot)gammap = 143 +/- 17 mub, where the errors include statistical and systematic errors added in quadrature.

In deep inelastic, neutral current scattering of electrons and protons at square-root s = 296 GeV, we observe in the ZEUS detector events with a large rapidity gap in the hadronic final state. They occur in the region of small Bjorken x and are observed up to Q2 of 100 GeV2. They account for about 5% of the events with Q2 greater-than-or-equal-to 10 GeV2. Their general properties are inconsistent with the dominant mechanism of deep inelastic scattering, where color is transferred between the scattered quark and the proton remnant, and suggest that the underlying production mechanism is the diffractive dissociation of the virtual photon.
