Abstract

The new, fourth generation of yield tables for the tree species oak, beech, spruce, Douglas fir and pine replaces the yield tables for the previously mentioned tree species in Schober's yield table collection from 1975, while retaining their formal structure. A fundamental revision of the content of these classic yield tables was urgently required in order to adequately take into account the effects of greatly changed environmental conditions and deviating silvicultural treatment and utilization concepts on the growth and structure of the stands. This volume provides an introductory overview of the data basis, the assumed silvicultural treatment concept, scoring and application requirements. One section provides information on the application of the yield tables in stands not treated in accordance with the yield tables. The tabular presentation of the yield tables as well as supplementary tables and graphs form the main part of this volume. Abstract

The immobilization of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) linear surface assemblies on polycarbonate (PC) melt surface via molding is investigated. The order of the particle assemblies is preserved during the molding process. The assemblies on PC exhibit plasmonic coupling features and dichroic properties. The structure of the assemblies is quantified based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and image analysis data using an orientational order parameter. The transfer process from mold to melt shows high structural fidelity. The order parameter of around 0.98 reflects the orientation of the lines and remains unaffected, independent of the injection direction of the melt relative to the particle lines. This is discussed in the frame of fountain flow during injection molding. The particles were permanently fixed and withstood the injection molding process, detachment of the substrate, and extraction in boiling ethanol. The plasmonic particles coupled strongly within the dense nanoparticle lines to produce anisotropic optical properties, as quantified by dichroic ratios of 0.28 and 0.52 using ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) spectroscopy. AuNP line assemblies on a polymer surface may be a basis for plasmonic devices like surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors or a precursor for nanowires. Their embedding via injection molding constitutes an important link between particle-self-assembly approaches for optically functional surfaces and polymer processing techniques. Abstract

The article "How far do bayonets reach? Violence and colonial rule in Africa" by Tabea U. Buddeberg and Jürgen G. Nagel discusses violence and colonial rule in Africa. It emphasizes that the establishment of European colonies on other continents rarely occurred peacefully and often relied on superior military technology. Southern Africa serves as a case study for the violent seizure of colonies. The article also discusses various forms of violence used in colonialism and apartheid, including radical outbreaks of violence and structural violence. Racially organized segregation spatially and socially excluded the colonized society from many areas of social life. The text deals with the legitimization of power asymmetry in modern colonialism and the connection between racism and science. Se describe el simulador de crecimiento y producción de rodales forestales BWINPro7 versión El Salto, Durango. Es una herramienta de sencillo manejo para ser utilizada por gestores y propietarios forestales como apoyo a la toma de decisiones en el manejo forestal. El programa incorpora modelos de crecimiento de árbol individual, desarrollados en los últimos años para las principales especies de pino y encino de los bosques mixtos e irregulares del noroeste de México. Específicamente, fueron incorporados al simulador de crecimiento BWINPro7: 1) modelos para estimar el diámetro de copa y la altura de fuste limpio, 2) modelos para la estimación del crecimiento en altura y área basal de árboles individuales y, 3) un modelo para la cuantificación de la mortalidad natural. Adicionalmente, el simulador puede ser usado con parcelas permanentes de inventario para describir la estructura espacial y prescribir cortas de aclareo y aprovechamientos forestales a escala industrial. This paper describes a user-friendly computer application developed for forest management planning in El Salto, Durango (Mexico). The computer program BWINPro7 version El Salto allows for forest growth and predicts future stand development. It represents an easy tool that can be used by forest managers and owners of forest lands in the decision-making process. The program incorporates individual tree growth models developed for most pine and oak species during recent years in mixed and uneven-aged forests in the north-eastern region of Mexico. Specifically, the models that were incorporated into the program BWINPro7 are: (1) models to estimate crown width and the height to the live crown base, (2) individual tree basal area and height growth models, and (3) a model to predict individual tree mortality. In addition, the simulator can be used in permanent sample plots to describe stand spatial structure, and to prescribe thinning and timber harvest at industrial scale. Abstract

One of the most frequently used polymers in the galvanic industry as well as for Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is the terpolymer of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Its surface is etched in chromosulfuric acid to enable the chemical deposition of a metal. The use of chromium (Cr)(VI) compounds is restricted in the European Union (EU) since 2017. A new plating process is proposed here that does not rely on etching. Instead, double bonds on the ABS surface are converted to epoxides, followed by grafting of a polyethylenimine (PEI) to the surface. The so modified plastic is an ideal starting point for metal plating. Printing often leads to the formation of voids between strands and layers, which hinders subsequent wet processing. The plating process introduced here requires high demands on the water tightness of parts. The proposed printing procedure reduces the degree of penetration of water from 50% to less than 0.1% at 2 bar water pressure. The combination of the new printing procedure with the new plating process results in the deposition of industrial relevant nickel (Ni) layers. The cross‐hatch test followed by a peel test exhibits values of zero, pointing to the high adhesion of Ni to ABS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
