Abstract

All carbon materials, e.g., amorphous carbon (a-C) coatings and C60 fullerene thin films, play an important role in short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL) research motivated by FEL optics development and prospective nanotechnology applications. Responses of a-C and C60 layers to the extreme ultraviolet (SPring-8 Compact SASE Source in Japan) and soft x-ray (free-electron laser in Hamburg) free-electron laser radiation are investigated by Raman spectroscopy, differential interference contrast, and atomic force microscopy. A remarkable difference in the behavior of covalent (a-C) and molecular (C60) carbonaceous solids is demonstrated under these irradiation conditions. Low thresholds for ablation of a fullerene crystal (estimated to be around 0.15 eV/atom for C60 vs 0.9 eV/atom for a-C in terms of the absorbed dose) are caused by a low cohesive energy of fullerene crystals. An efficient mechanism of the removal of intact C60 molecules from the irradiated crystal due to Coulomb repulsion of fullerene-cage cation radicals formed by the ionizing radiation is revealed by a detailed modeling.

Abstract

Phase-shift differences and amplitude ratios of the outgoing $s$ and $d$ continuum wave packets generated by two-photon ionization of helium atoms are determined from the photoelectron angular distributions obtained using velocity map imaging. Helium atoms are ionized with ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser pulses with a photon energy of 20.3, 21.3, 23.0, and 24.3 eV, produced by the SPring-8 Compact SASE Source test accelerator. The measured values of the phase-shift differences are distinct from scattering phase-shift differences when the photon energy is tuned to an excited level or Rydberg manifold. The difference stems from the competition between resonant and non-resonant paths in two-photon ionization by ultrashort pulses. Since the competition can be controlled in principle by the pulse shape, the present results illustrate a new way to tailor the continuum wave packet., Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 3 figures

Abstract

The evolution of the geometric and electronic structures within the entire series of lanthanide orthophosphate nanoparticles (∼2–∼5 nm) has been determined experimentally with X-ray diffraction and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. In particular, the interplay between electronic structure, crystal morphology, and crystal phase has been systematically studied. A missing local order in the crystal structure accompanied by multiple ion sites in the nanoparticles was revealed to be due to the small crystal size and large surface contribution. All lanthanide ions were found to be in “3+” configuration and accommodated in three different crystallization states: the larger lanthanide ions (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) in the monoclinic phase, the smaller ones (Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) in the tetragonal phase, and the intermediate lanthanide ions (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho) in a “mixed phase” between monoclinic and tetragonal phases. Abstract

The role of orbital polarization for ultrafast charge transfer between an atomic adsorbate and a substrate is explored. Core hole clock spectroscopy with linearly polarized x-ray radiation allows to selectively excite adsorbate resonance states with defined spatial orientation relative to the substrate surface. For c(4×2)S/Ru(0001) the charge transfer times between the sulfur 2s-13p*+1 antibonding resonance and the ruthenium substrate have been studied, with the 2s electron excited into the 3p⊥* state along the surface normal and the 3p∥* state in the surface plane. The charge transfer times are determined as 0.18±0.07 and 0.84±0.23 fs, respectively. This variation is the direct consequence of the different adsorbate-substrate orbital overlap. Abstract

This work is an investigation of the desorption by O ls excitation of ions from Si(100) reacted with water. Photoelectron, photostimulated desorption, and electron-ion coincidence spectroscopy are used to observe the process. When the incident photons have energy levels which are near the l s threshold of O, they induce Auger decay that is accompanied by shakeup/off excitation and cascade Auger decay, and they are shown to be the main factor responsible for desorption in this case. When the photons have energy levels which are above the shakeup threshold, most of the desorption that occurs is a result of the shakeup excitation that accompanies the core excitation. In both cases, the desorption is induced by the respective multihole final states. The ion desorption yield for the two-hole final states of the normal process of Auger decay is small. The results are discussed, with the help of the Auger electron spectra, mainly in terms of the lifetime of the final state of Auger decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. Single-atom response of helium atoms to pulses from an EUV free-electron laser - implications for the subsequent development of superfluorescence

Abstract

Using multilevel (161-level) numerical simulations beyond the rotating-wave approximation, we investigate the single-atom response of helium to intense pulses of radiation with properties characteristic of a SASE free-electron laser source, and central wavelengths resonant with 1snp excitation (n=3,4). The results show a complete breakdown of the two-level approximation, and suggest that under typical experimental conditions levels other than the resonant level are significantly populated. We discuss the implications for the subsequent development of superfluorescence (a collective effect) from the excited atomic medium, and compare the results to recent experiments.

Abstract

Symmetrical fluorescence yield profiles and asymmetrical electron yield profiles of the preresonances at the La N-IV,N-V x-ray absorption edge are experimentally observed in LaPO4 nanoparticles. Theoretical studies show that they are caused by interference effects. The spin-orbit interaction and the giant resonance produce symmetry entangled intermediate states that activate coherent scattering and alter the spectral distribution of the oscillator strength. The scattering amplitudes of the electron and fluorescence decays are further modified by the spin-orbit coupling in the final 5p(5)epsilon l and 5p(5)4f(1) states.

Abstract

We detect a significant angle-dependence in the core level and valence line shapes of photoelectron spectra of single crystal K3C60. This allows the identification of bulk and surface components in the data, and allows us to explain the anomalous line shapes observed for this system. The states near the Fermi level are associated with the bulk of the sample. There is strong evidence of an insulating surface layer, which we ascribe to intermolecular electron correlations. These results simplify the interpretation of previous, apparently conflicting observations.

Abstract

We carried out time-of-flight mass spectrometry for neon clusters that were exposed to intense free electron laser pulses with the wavelength of 62 nm, which induce optical transition from the ground state (2s(2) 2p(6)) to an excited state (2s(2) 2p(5) nl) in the Ne atoms. In contrast to Ne+ ions produced by two-photon absorption from isolated Ne atoms, the Ne+ ion yield from Ne clusters shows a linear dependence on the laser intensity (I). We discuss the ionization mechanisms which give the linear behaviour with respect to I and expected features in the electron emission spectrum.

Abstract

The multiple ionization of Ar-core-Ne-shell clusters in intense extreme-ultraviolet laser pulses (lambda similar to 62 nm) from the free-electron laser in Japan was investigated utilizing a momentum imaging technique. The Ar composition dependence of the kinetic energies and the yields of the fragment ions give evidence for charge transfer from the Ar core to the Ne shell. We have extended the uniformly charged sphere model originally applied to pristine clusters [Islam et al., Phys. Rev. A 73, 041201 (R) (2006)] to the core-shell heterogeneous clusters to estimate the amounts of charge and energy transfers.

Abstract

A mechanism for three-photon double ionization of atoms by extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser pulses is revealed, where in a sequential process the second ionization step, proceeding via resonant two-photon ionization of ions, is strongly enhanced by the excitation of ionic autoionizing states. In contrast to the conventional model, the mechanism explains the observed relative intensities of photoelectron peaks and their angular dependence in three-photon double ionization of argon.

Abstract

We have investigated multiple ionization of N-2 and O-2 molecules by 52 nm extreme-ultraviolet light pulses at the free-electron laser facility SCSS in Japan. Coulomb break-up of parent ions with charge states up to 5+ is found by the ion-ion coincidence technique. The charge-state dependence of kinetic energy release distributions suggests that the electrons are emitted sequentially in competition with the elongation of the bond length.

Abstract

The interaction of clusters with intense EUV-FEL pulses was investigated using the SPring-8 Compact SASE Source (SCSS) test facility in Japan. Neon clusters of mean sizes = 1000 and 4000 were irradiated by intense FEL pulses at 52 nm and emitted ions were detected by a momentum imaging spectrometer. The production of energetic doubly charged ions was not found for Ne 1000, but it was observed for Ne 4000 clusters, which suggests that an inhomogeneous charge distribution is generated for the larger clusters.
