Lattice formation of swirling textures is ubiquitous in solid-state materials, such as a magnetic skyrmion lattice in chiral magnets. In the magnetic skyrmion lattices, their moving states and dynamics under external perturbations are still unrevealed, although a detailed understanding of the dynamics is crucial to realizing spintronic applications, such as magnetic domain-wall racetrack memory. Here, we report in detail on the transient state of a moving magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under alternating current (AC) using small-angle neutron scattering. A rotation and concomitant broadening of the spot width in the azimuthal direction of the magnetic skyrmion reflections originating from the plastic deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice were found only at low AC frequencies, whereas above the threshold AC frequency (ft ~ 0.12 Hz) the rotation was not observed, and the spot width becomes sharper. The observed complex response of the magnetic skyrmion reflections can be explained by the change in dislocation density in the magnetic skyrmion lattice. At frequencies higher than ft, the magnetic skyrmions oscillate removing the dislocations, indicating that the dislocation density is controlled by the AC frequency., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Many-body interactions play a crucial role in quantum topological systems, being able to impact or alter the topological classifications of non-interacting fermion systems. In open quantum systems, where interactions with the environment cause dissipation and decoherence of the fermionic dynamics, the absence of hermiticity in the subsystem Hamiltonian drastically reduces the stability of the topological phases of the corresponding closed systems. Here we investigate the non-perturbative effects induced by the environment on the prototype Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain coupled to local harmonic oscillator baths through either intra-cell or inter-cell transfer integrals. Despite the common view, this type of coupling, if suitably engineered, can even induce a transition to topological phases. By using a world-line Quantum Monte Carlo technique we determine the phase diagram of the model proving that the bimodality of the probability distribution of the polarization signals the emergence of the topological phase. We show that a qualitative description can be obtained in terms of an approach based on the Cluster Perturbation Theory providing, in particular, a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for the fermionic subsystem and insights on the dissipative dynamics., Comment: 5 figures

A three-dimensional topological insulator features a two-dimensional surface state consisting of a single linearly-dispersive Dirac cone. Under broken time-reversal symmetry, the single Dirac cone is predicted to cause half-integer quantization of Hall conductance, which is a manifestation of the parity anomaly in quantum field theory. However, despite various observations of quantization phenomena, the half-integer quantization has been elusive because a pair of equivalent Dirac cones on two opposing surfaces are simultaneously measured in ordinary experiments. Here we demonstrate the half-integer quantization of Hall conductance in a synthetic heterostructure termed a 'semi-magnetic' topological insulator, where only one surface state is gapped by magnetic doping and the opposite one is non-magnetic and gapless. We observe half quantized Faraday/Kerr rotations with terahertz magneto-optical spectroscopy and half quantized Hall conductance in transport at zero magnetic field. Our results suggest a condensed-matter realization of the parity anomaly and open a way for studying unconventional physics enabled by a single Dirac fermion., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

By using worldline and diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo techniques, matrix product state and a variational approach \`a la Feynman, we investigate the equilibrium properties and relaxation features of a quantum system of $N$ spins antiferromagnetically interacting with each other, with strength $J$, and coupled to a common bath of bosonic oscillators, with strength $\alpha$. We show that, in the Ohmic regime, a Beretzinski-Thouless-Kosterlitz quantum phase transition occurs. While for $J=0$ the critical value of $\alpha$ decreases asymptotically with $1/N$ by increasing $N$, for nonvanishing $J$ it turns out to be practically independent on $N$, allowing to identify a finite range of values of $\alpha$ where spin phase coherence is preserved also for large $N$. Then, by using matrix product state simulations, and the Mori formalism and the variational approach \`a la Feynman jointly, we unveil the features of the relaxation, that, in particular, exhibits a non monotonic dependence on the temperature reminiscent of the Kondo effect. For the observed quantum phase transition we also establish a criterion analogous to that of the metal-insulator transition in solids.

The notion of non-trivial topological winding in condensed matter systems represents a major area of present-day theoretical and experimental research. Magnetic materials offer a versatile platform that is particularly amenable for the exploration of topological spin solitons in real space such as skyrmions. First identified in non-centrosymmetric bulk materials, the rapidly growing zoology of materials systems hosting skyrmions and related topological spin solitons includes bulk compounds, surfaces, thin films, heterostructures, nano-wires and nano-dots. This underscores an exceptional potential for major breakthroughs ranging from fundamental questions to applications as driven by an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between areas in magnetism which traditionally have been pursued rather independently. The skyrmionics roadmap provides a review of the present state of the art and the wide range of research directions and strategies currently under way. These are, for instance, motivated by the identification of the fundamental structural properties of skyrmions and related textures, processes of nucleation and annihilation in the presence of non-trivial topological winding, an exceptionally efficient coupling to spin currents generating spin transfer torques at tiny current densities, as well as the capability to purpose-design broad-band spin dynamic and logic devices., Comment: J. Numerous angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of a wide class of low-density metallic systems, ranging from doped transition metal oxides to quasi two-dimensional interfaces between insulators, exhibit phonon sidebands below the quasi-particle peak as a unique hallmark of polaronic correlations. Here, we single out properties of ARPES spectra that can provide a robust estimate of the effective range (screening length) of the electron-phonon interaction, regardless of the limited experimental resolution, dimensionality and particular features of the electronic structure, facilitating a general methodology for an analysis of a whole class of materials., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

By using the cluster perturbation theory, we investigate the effects of the local electron-phonon interaction in the quantum spin Hall topological insulator described by the half-filled Kane-Mele model on an honeycomb lattice. Starting from the topological non trivial phase, where the minimal gap is located at the two inequivalent Dirac points of the Graphene, $\text{K}$ and $\text{K}'$, we show that the coupling with quantum phonons induces a topological-trivial quantum phase transition through a gap closing and reopening in the $\text{M}$ point of the Brillouin zone. The average number of fermions in this point turns out to be a direct indicator of the quantum transition pointing out a strong hybridization between the two bare quasiparticle bands of the Kane-Mele model. By increasing the strength of charge-lattice coupling, the phonon Green's propagator displays a two peak structure: the one located at the lowest energy exhibits a softening that is maximum around the topological transition. In condensed matter physics many features can be understood in terms of their topological properties. Here we report evidence of a topological quantum transition driven by the charge-phonon coupling in the spinless Haldane model on a honeycomb lattice, a well-known prototypical model of Chern insulator. Starting from parameters describing the topological phase in the bare Haldane model, we show that the increasing of the strength of the charge lattice coupling drives the system towards a trivial insulator. The average number of fermions in the Dirac point, characterized by the lowest gap, exhibits a finite discontinuity at the transition point and can be used as direct indicator of the topological quantum transition. Numerical simulations show, also, that the renormalized phonon propagator exhibits a two peak structure across the quantum transition, whereas, in absence of the mass term in the bare Hadane model, there is indication of a complete softening of the effective vibrational mode signaling a charge density wave instability., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We show that the temperature dependence of conductivity of high mobility organic crystals Pentacene and Rubrene can be quantitatively described in the framework of the model where carriers are scattered by quenched local impurities and interact with phonons by Su-Schrieffer-Hegger (SSH) coupling. Within this model, we present approximation free results for mobility and optical conductivity obtained by world line Monte Carlo, which we generalize to the case of coupling both to phonons and impurities. We find fingerprints of carrier dynamics in these compounds which differ from conventional metals and show that the dynamics of carriers can be described as a superposition of a Drude term representing diffusive mobile particles and a Lorentz term associated with dynamics of localized charges., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Magnetochiral effect (MChE) of phonons, a nonreciprocal acoustic property arising due to the symmetry principles, is demonstrated in a chiral-lattice ferrimagnet Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Our high-resolution ultrasound experiments reveal that the sound velocity differs for parallel and antiparallel propagation with respect to the external magnetic field.The sign of the nonreciprocity depends on the chirality of the crystal in accordance with the selection rule of the MChE. The nonreciprocity is enhanced below the magnetic ordering temperature and at higher ultrasound frequencies, which is quantitatively explained by a proposed magnon-phonon hybridization mechanism., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we investigate the deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under electric current flow. A significant broadening of the skyrmion-lattice-reflection peaks was observed in the SANS pattern for current densities greater than a threshold value j_t ~ 1 MA/m^2 (10^6 A/m^2). We show this peak broadening to originate from a spatially inhomogeneous rotation of the skyrmion lattice, with an inverse rotation sense observed for opposite sample edges aligned with the direction of current flow. The peak broadening (and the corresponding skyrmion lattice rotations) remain finite even after switching off the electric current. These results indicate that skyrmion lattices under current flow experience significant friction near the sample edges, and plastic deformation due to pinning effects, these being important factors that must be considered for the anticipated skyrmion-based applications in chiral magnets at the nanoscale.

Shift current---a photocurrent induced by light irradiating noncentrosymmetric materials in the absence of any bias voltage or built-in electric field---is one of the mechanisms of the so-called bulk photovoltaic effect. It has been traditionally described as a nonlinear optical response of periodic solids to continuous wave light using a perturbative formula, which is linear in the intensity of light and which involves Berry connection describing the shift in the center of mass position of the Wannier wave function associated with the transition between the valence and conduction bands. We analyze realistic two-terminal devices, where paradigmatic Rice-Mele model is sandwiched between two metallic electrodes, using recently developed time-dependent nonequilibrium Green function algorithms scaling linearly in the number of time steps and capable of treating nonperturbative effects in the amplitude of external time-dependent fields. This unveils novel features: superballistic transport, signified by time dependence of the displacement, $\sim t^\nu$ with $\nu > 1$, of the photoexcited charge carriers from the region where the femtosecond light pulse is applied toward the electrodes; and photocurrent quadratic in light intensity at subgap frequencies of light due to two-photon absorption processes that were missed in previous perturbative analyses. Furthermore, frequency dependence of the DC component of the photocurrent reveals shift currents as a realization of nonadiabatic quantum charge pumping enabled by breaking of left-right symmetry of the device structure. Photoexcitation in solids brings about transitions of electrons/holes between different electronic bands. If the solid lacks an inversion symmetry, these electronic transitions support spontaneous photocurrent due to the topological character of the constituting electronic bands; the Berry connection. This photocurrent, termed shift current, is expected to emerge on the time-scale of primary photoexcitation process. We observed ultrafast time evolution of the shift current in a prototypical ferroelectric semiconductor by detecting emitted terahertz electromagnetic waves. By sweeping the excitation photon energy across the band gap, ultrafast electron dynamics as a source of terahertz emission abruptly changes its nature, reflecting a contribution of Berry connection upon interband optical transition. The shift excitation carries a net charge flow, and is followed by a swing-over of the electron cloud on the sub-picosecond time-scale of electron-phonon interaction. In the MnSi bulk chiral magnet, magnetic skyrmion strings of 17 nm in diameter appear in the form of a lattice, penetrating the sample thickness, 10-1,000 um. Although such a bundle of skyrmion strings may exhibit complex soft-matter-like dynamics when starting to move under the influence of a random pinning potential, the details remain highly elusive. Here, we show that a metastable skyrmion-string lattice is subject to topological unwinding under the application of pulsed currents of 3-5x106 A m-2 rather than being transported, as evidenced by measurements of the topological Hall effect. The critical current density above which the topological unwinding occurs is larger for a shorter pulse width, reminiscent of the viscoelastic characteristics accompanying the pinning-creep transition observed in domain-wall motion. Numerical simulations reveal that current-induced depinning of already segmented skyrmion strings initiates the topological unwinding. We study the interplay of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the course of electron-hole bound state formation for gapped solid state systems. Adapting the essentially approximation-free diagrammatic Monte Carlo method for the calculation of the optical response, we discuss the absorption of light in correlated electron-phonon systems for the whole interaction and phonon frequency regimes. The spectral function obtained by analytical continuation from the imaginary-time current-current correlation function demonstrates the dressing of excitons by a phonon cloud when the coupling the lattice degrees of freedom becomes increasingly important, where notable differences show up between the adiabatic and anti-adiabatic cases., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Electron transport coupled with magnetism has attracted attention over the years as exemplified in anomalous Hall effect due to a Berry phase in momentum space. Another type of unconventional Hall effect -- topological Hall effect, originating from the real-space Berry phase, has recently become of great importance in the context of magnetic skyrmions. We have observed topological Hall effect in bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ and paramagnetic SrIrO$_3$ over a wide region of both temperature and magnetic field. The topological term rapidly decreases with the thickness of SrRuO$_3$, ending up with the complete disappearance at 7 unit cells of SrRuO$_3$. Combined with model calculation, we concluded that the topological Hall effect is driven by interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is caused by both the broken inversion symmetry and the strong spin-orbit coupling of SrIrO$_3$. Such interaction is expected to realize the N\'{e}el-type magnetic skyrmion, of which size is estimated to be $\sim$10 nm from the magnitude of topological Hall resistivity. By breaking the time-reversal-symmetry in three-dimensional topological insulators with introduction of spontaneous magnetization or application of magnetic field, the surface states become gapped, leading to quantum anomalous Hall effect or quantum Hall effect, when the chemical potential locates inside the gap. Further breaking of inversion symmetry is possible by employing magnetic topological insulator heterostructures that host nondegenerate top and bottom surface states. Here, we demonstrate the tailored-material approach for the realization of robust quantum Hall states in the bilayer system, in which the cooperative or cancelling combination of the anomalous and ordinary Hall responses from the respective magnetic and non-magnetic layers is exemplified. The appearance of quantum Hall states at filling factor 0 and +1 can be understood by the relationship of energy band diagrams for the two independent surface states. The designable heterostructures of magnetic topological insulator may explore a new arena for intriguing topological transport and functionality.

Interplay of spin, charge, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in oxide heterostructures results in a plethora of fascinating properties, which can be exploited in new generations of electronic devices with enhanced functionalities. The paradigm example is the interface between the two band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) that hosts two-dimensional electron system (2DES). Apart from the mobile charge carriers, this system exhibits a range of intriguing properties such as field effect, superconductivity and ferromagnetism, whose fundamental origins are still debated. Here, we use soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to penetrate through the LAO overlayer and access charge carriers at the buried interface. The experimental spectral function directly identifies the interface charge carriers as large polarons, emerging from coupling of charge and lattice degrees of freedom, and involving two phonons of different energy and thermal activity. This phenomenon fundamentally limits the carrier mobility and explains its puzzling drop at high temperatures.

We have investigated magneto-transport properties in a single crystal of pyrochore-type Nd2Ir2O7. The metallic conduction is observed on the antiferromagnetic domain walls of the all-in all-out type Ir-5d moment ordered insulating bulk state, that can be finely controlled by external magnetic field along [111]. On the other hand, an applied field along [001] induces the bulk phase transition from insulator to semimetal as a consequence of the field-induced modification of Nd-4f and Ir-5d moment configurations. A theoretical calculation consistently describing the experimentally observed features suggests a variety of exotic topological states as functions of electron correlation and Ir-5d moment orders which can be finely tuned by choice of rare-earth ion and by magnetic field, respectively.

Spontaneously emergent chirality is an issue of fundamental importance across the natural sciences. It has been argued that a unidirectional (chiral) rotation of a mechanical ratchet is forbidden in thermal equilibrium, but becomes possible in systems out of equilibrium. Here we report our finding that a topologically nontrivial spin texture known as a skyrmion - a particle-like object in which spins point in all directions to wrap a sphere - constitutes such a ratchet. By means of Lorentz transmission electron microscopy we show that micron-sized crystals of skyrmions in thin films of Cu2OSeO3 and MnSi display a unidirectional rotation motion. Our numerical simulations based on a stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation suggest that this rotation is driven solely by thermal fluctuations in the presence of a temperature gradient, whereas in thermal equilibrium it is forbidden by the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem. We show that the rotational flow of magnons driven by the effective magnetic field of skyrmions gives rise to the skyrmion rotation, therefore suggesting that magnons can be used to control the motion of these spin textures., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic skyrmion, a swirling spin texture, in chiral magnets is characterized by (i) nano-scale size ($\sim$1nm -- 100nm), (ii) topological stability, and (iii) gyro-dynamics. These features are shown to be advantageous for (a) high-density data-storage, (b) nonvolatile memory, and (c) ultra-low current and energy cost manipulation, respectively. By the numerical simulations of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, the elementary functions of skyrmions are demonstrated aiming at the design principles of skyrmionic memory devices.

The three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) is a novel state of matter as characterized by two-dimensional (2D) metallic Dirac states on its surface. Bi-based chalcogenides such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and their combined/mixed compounds like Bi2Se2Te and (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 are typical members of 3D-TIs which have been intensively studied in forms of bulk single crystals and thin films to verify the topological nature of the surface states. Here, we report the realization of the Quantum Hall effect (QHE) on the surface Dirac states in (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 films (x = 0.84 and 0.88). With electrostatic gate-tuning of the Fermi level in the bulk band gap under magnetic fields, the quantum Hall states with filling factor \nu = \pm 1 are resolved with quantized Hall resistance of Ryx = h/e2 and zero longitudinal resistance, owing to chiral edge modes at top/bottom surface Dirac states. Furthermore, the appearance of a \nu = 0 state (\sigma xy = 0) reflects a pseudo-spin Hall insulator state when the Fermi level is tuned in between the energy levels of the non-degenerate top and bottom surface Dirac points. The observation of the QHE in 3D TI films may pave a way toward TI-based electronics.

The transport properties at finite temperature of crystalline organic semiconductors are investigated, within the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, by combining exact diagonalization technique, Monte Carlo approaches, and maximum entropy method. The temperature-dependent mobility data measured in single crystals of rubrene are successfully reproduced: a crossover from super- to sub-diffusive motion occurs in the range $150 \leq T \leq 200$ K, where the mean free path becomes of the order of the lattice parameter and strong memory effects start to appear. We provide an effective model which can successfully explain low frequencies features of the absorption spectra. The observed response to slowly varying electric field is interpreted by means of a simple model where the interaction between the charge carrier and lattice polarization modes is simulated by a harmonic interaction between a fictitious particle and an electron embedded in a viscous fluid.

We present the first unbiased results for the mobility $\mu$ of one-dimensional Holstein polaron obtained by numerical analytic continuation combined with diagrammatic and world-line Monte Carlo methods in the thermodynamic limit. We have identified for the first time, by the characteristic $\omega$ and $T$ dependence in the wide region of parameters, several distinct regimes in the $\lambda-T$ plane including band conduction region, incoherent metallic region, activated hopping region, and high temperature saturation region. We observe for the first time that although mobilities and mean free paths at different values of $\lambda$ differ by many orders of magnitude at small temperatures, their values at $T$ larger than the bandwidth become very close to each other.

The Kubo formula for the electrical conductivity is rewritten in terms of a sum of Drude-like contributions associated to the exact eigenstates of the interacting system, each characterized by its own frequency-dependent relaxation time. The structure of the novel and equivalent formulation, weighting the contribution from each eigenstate by its Boltzmann occupation factor, simplifies considerably the access to the static properties (dc conductivity) and resolves the long standing difficulties to recover the Boltzmann result for dc conductivity from the Kubo formula. It is shown that the Boltzmann result, containing the correct transport scattering time instead of the electron lifetime determined by the Green function, can be recovered in problems with elastic and inelastic scattering at the lowest order of interaction.

We study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in proximity-induced ferromagnetic palladium and platinum which is widely used in spintronics, within the Berry phase formalism based on the relativistic band structure calculations. We find that both the anomalous Hall ($\sigma_{xy}^A$) and Nernst ($\alpha_{xy}^A$) conductivities can be related to the spin Hall conductivity ($\sigma_{xy}^S$) and band exchange-splitting ($\Delta_{ex}$) by relations $\sigma_{xy}^A =\Delta_{ex}\frac{e}{\hbar}\sigma_{xy}^S(E_F)'$ and $\alpha_{xy}^A = -\frac{\pi^2}{3}\frac{k_B^2T\Delta_{ex}}{\hbar}\sigma_{xy}^s(\mu)"$, respectively. In particular, these relations would predict that the $\sigma_{xy}^A$ in the magnetized Pt (Pd) would be positive (negative) since the $\sigma_{xy}^S(E_F)'$ is positive (negative). Furthermore, both $\sigma_{xy}^A$ and $\alpha_{xy}^A$ are approximately proportional to the induced spin magnetic moment ($m_s$) because the $\Delta_{ex}$ is a linear function of $m_s$. Using the reported $m_s$ in the magnetized Pt and Pd, we predict that the intrinsic anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) in the magnetic platinum and palladium would be gigantic, being up to ten times larger than, e.g., iron, while the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) would also be significant., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Physical Review B

We investigate the two-dimensional (2D) highly spin-polarized electron accumulation layers commonly appearing near the surface of n-type polar semiconductors BiTeX (X = I, Br, and Cl) by angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Due to the polarity and the strong spin-orbit interaction built in the bulk atomic configurations, the quantized conduction-band subbands show giant Rashba-type spin-splitting. The characteristic 2D confinement effect is clearly observed also in the valence-bands down to the binding energy of 4 eV. The X-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling is directly estimated from the observed spin-split subbands, which roughly scales with the inverse of the band-gap size in BiTeX., Comment: 15 pages 4 figures

Bismuth-chalchogenides are model examples of three-dimensional topological insulators. Their ideal bulk-truncated surface hosts a single spin-helical surface state, which is the simplest possible surface electronic structure allowed by their non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology. They are therefore widely regarded ideal templates to realize the predicted exotic phenomena and applications of this topological surface state. However, real surfaces of such compounds, even if kept in ultra-high vacuum, rapidly develop a much more complex electronic structure whose origin and properties have proved controversial. Here, we demonstrate that a conceptually simple model, implementing a semiconductor-like band bending in a parameter-free tight-binding supercell calculation, can quantitatively explain the entire measured hierarchy of electronic states. In combination with circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments, we further uncover a rich three-dimensional spin texture of this surface electronic system, resulting from the non-trivial topology of the bulk band structure. Moreover, our study reveals how the full surface-bulk connectivity in topological insulators is modified by quantum confinement., Comment: 9 pages, including supplementary information, 4+4 figures. The spectral response and physical features of the 2D Hubbard-Holstein model are calculated both in equilibrium at zero and low chemical dopings, and after an ultra short powerful light pulse, in undoped systems. At equilibrium and at strong charge-lattice couplings, the optical conductivity reveals a 3-peak structure in agreement with experimental observations. After an ultra short pulse and at nonzero electron-phonon interaction, phonon and spin subsystems oscillate with the phonon period $T_{ph} \approx 80$ fs. The decay time of the phonon oscillations is about 150-200 fs, similar to the relaxation time of the charge system. We propose a criterion for observing these oscillations in high $T_c$ compounds: the time span of the pump light pulse $\tau_{pump}$ has to be shorter than the phonon oscillation period $T_{ph}$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study the magneto-optical (MO) response of polar semiconductor BiTeI with giant bulk Rashba spin splitting at various carrier densities. Despite being non-magnetic, the material is found to yield a huge MO activity in the infrared region under moderate magnetic fields (<3 T). By comparison with first-principles calculations, we show that such an enhanced MO response is mainly due to the intraband transitions between the Rashba-split bulk conduction bands in BiTeI, which give rise to distinct novel features and systematic doping dependence of the MO spectra. We further predict an even more pronounced enhancement in the low-energy MO response and dc Hall effect near the crossing (Dirac) point of the conduction bands.

In layered polar semiconductor BiTeI, giant Rashba-type spin-split band dispersions show up due to the crystal structure asymmetry and the strong spin-orbit interaction. Here we investigate the 3-dimensional (3D) bulk band structures of BiTeI using the bulk-sensitive $h\nu$-dependent soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES). The obtained band structure is shown to be well reproducible by the first-principles calculations, with huge spin splittings of ${\sim}300$ meV at the conduction-band-minimum and valence-band-maximum located in the $k_z=\pi/c$ plane. It provides the first direct experimental evidence of the 3D Rashba-type spin splitting in a bulk compound., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the thermal Hall effect of magnons for various ferromagnetic insulators. For pyrochlore ferromagnetic insulators Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, Ho$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, and In$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$, finite thermal Hall conductivities have been observed below the Curie temperature $T_C$ . From the temperature and magnetic field dependences, it is concluded that magnons are responsible for the thermal Hall effect. The Hall effect of magnons can be well explained by the theory based on the Berry curvature in momentum space induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The analysis has been extended to the transition metal (TM) oxides with perovskite structure. The thermal Hall signal was absent or far smaller in La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ and YTiO$_3$, which have the distorted perovskite structure with four TM ions in the unit cell. On the other hand, a finite thermal Hall response is discernible below $T_C$ in another ferromagentic perovskite oxide BiMnO$_3$, which shows orbital ordering with a larger unit cell. We study the magnetic susceptibility of a layered semiconductor BiTeI with giant Rashba spin splitting both theoretically and experimentally to explore its orbital magnetism. Apart from the core contributions, a large temperature-dependent diamagnetic susceptibility is observed when the Fermi energy E_F is near the crossing point of the conduction bands, while the susceptibility turns to be paramagnetic when E_F is away from it. These features are consistent with first-principles calculations, which also predict an enhanced orbital magnetic susceptibility with both positive and negative signs as a function of E_F due to band (anti)crossings. We study theoretically a fundamental issue in solids: the evolution of the optical spectra of polaron as the electron-phonon coupling increases. By comparing the exact results obtained by diagrammatic Monte Carlo method and the data got through exact diagonalization within an appropriate subspace of the phononic wavefunctions, the physical nature of the crossover from weak to strong coupling is revealed. The optical spectra are well understood by the quantum mechanical superposition of states with light and heavy phonon clouds corresponding to large and small polarons, respectively. It is also found that the strong coupling Franck-Condon regime is not accessible at realistic values of the coupling constant., Comment: 4 pages

The spin-orbit interaction affects the electronic structure of solids in various ways. Topological insulators are one example where the spin-orbit interaction leads the bulk bands to have a non-trivial topology, observable as gapless surface or edge states. Another example is the Rashba effect, which lifts the electron-spin degeneracy as a consequence of spin-orbit interaction under broken inversion symmetry. It is of particular importance to know how these two effects, i.e. the non-trivial topology of electronic states and Rashba spin splitting, interplay with each other. Here we show, through sophisticated first-principles calculations, that BiTeI, a giant bulk Rashba semiconductor, turns into a topological insulator under a reasonable pressure. This material is shown to exhibit several unique features such as, a highly pressure-tunable giant Rashba spin splitting, an unusual pressure-induced quantum phase transition, and more importantly the formation of strikingly different Dirac surface states at opposite sides of the material., Comment: 5 figures are included

We present a combined study of the angle-resolved-photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and quantum Monte Carlo simulations to propose a novel polaronic metallic state in underdoped cuprates. An approximation scheme is proposed to represent underdoped cuprates away from 1/2 filling, replacing the many-body Hamiltonian by that of a single polaron with effective electron-phonon interaction (EPI), that successfully explains many puzzles such as a large momentum-dependent dichotomy between nodal and anti-nodal directions, and an unconventional doping dependence of ARPES in the underdoped region., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We theoretically propose the necessary conditions for realization of giant Rashba splitting in bulk systems. In addition to (i) the large atomic spin-orbit interaction in an inversion-asymmetric system, the following two conditions are further required; (ii) a narrow band gap, and (iii) the presence of top valence and bottom conduction bands of symmetrically the same character. As a representative example, using the first principles calculations, the recently discovered giant bulk Rashba splitting system BiTeI is shown to fully fulfill all these three conditions. Of particular importance, by predicting the correct crystal structure of BiTeI, different from what has been believed thus far, the third criterion is demonstrated to be met by a negative crystal field splitting of the top valence bands., Comment: 3 figures

Recent laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies have established the presence of a new kink in the low-energy nodal dispersion of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$+{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212). The energy scale (~8-15 meV) of this kink appears below the maximum of the superconducting gap $\delta_0$. Therefore it is difficult to interpret this feature in terms of the usual coupling to a sharp dispersionless mode. In this paper we examine electron-phonon coupling to the in-plane acoustic phonon branch arising from the modulation of the screened Coulomb potential. We demonstrate that such a coupling has a strong forward scattering peak, and as a consequence, a kink occurs in the dispersion at an energy scale shifted by the local gap $\delta(k)$. In addition, considerations for the reduction of screening with underdoping naturally explains the observed doping dependence of the low-energy kink. These results point to a strong coupling to the acoustic branch which is peaked in the forward scattering direction and has important implications for transport and pairing in the high-T$_c$ cuprates., Comment: 4.5 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to PRL

We show, both experimentally and theoretically, a novel route to obtain giant room temperature spin Hall effect due to surface-assisted skew scattering. In the experiment, we report the spin Hall effect in Pt-doped Au films with different thicknesses $t_N$. The giant spin Hall angle $\gamma_S$ = $0.12 \pm 0.04$ is obtained for $t_N$ = 10 nm at room temperature, while it is much smaller for $t_N$ = 20 nm sample. Combined ab initio and quantum Monte Carlo calculations for the skew scattering due to a Pt impurity show $\gamma_S$ $\cong$ 0.1 on the Au (111) surface, while it is small in bulk Au. The quantum Monte Carlo results show that the spin-orbit interaction of the Pt impurity on the Au (111) surface is enhanced, because the Pt 5d levels are lifted to the Fermi level due to the valence fluctuation. In addition, there are two spin-orbit interaction channels on the Au (111) surface, while only one in bulk Au., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We study a single polaron in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model using four different techniques (three numerical and one analytical). Polarons show a smooth crossover from weak to strong coupling, as a function of the electron-phonon coupling strength $\lambda$, in all models where this coupling depends only on phonon momentum $q$. In the SSH model the coupling also depends on the electron momentum $k$; we find it has a sharp transition, at a critical coupling strength $\lambda_c$, between states with zero and nonzero momentum of the ground state. All other properties of the polaron are also singular at $\lambda = \lambda_c$, except the average number of phonons in the polaronic cloud. This result is representative of all polarons with coupling depending on $k$ and $q$, and will have important experimental consequences (eg., in ARPES and conductivity experiments).

The Hall effect usually occurs when the Lorentz force acts on a charge current in a conductor in the presence of perpendicular magnetic field. On the other hand, neutral quasi-particles such as phonons and spins can carry heat current and potentially show the Hall effect without resorting to the Lorentz force. We report experimental evidence for the anomalous thermal Hall effect caused by spin excitations (magnons) in an insulating ferromagnet with a pyrochlore lattice structure. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the propagation of the spin wave is influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin-orbit interaction, which plays the role of the vector potential as in the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in metallic ferromagnets., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. The large variations of T$_c$ across the cuprate families is one of the major unsolved puzzles in condensed matter physics, and is poorly understood. Although there appears to be a great deal of universality in the cuprates, several orders of magnitude changes in T$_c$ can be achieved through changes in the chemical composition and structure of the unit cell. In this paper we formulate a systematic examination of the variations in electron-phonon coupling to oxygen phonons in the cuprates, incorporating a number of effects arising from several aspects of chemical composition and doping across cuprate families. It is argued that the electron-phonon coupling is a very sensitive probe of the material-dependent variations of chemical structure, affecting the orbital character of the band crossing the Fermi level, the strength of local electric fields arising from structural-induced symmetry breaking, doping dependent changes in the underlying band structure, and ionicity of the crystal governing the ability of the material to screen $c$-axis perturbations. Using electrostatic Ewald calculations and known experimental structural data, we establish a connection between the material's maximal T$_c$ at optimal doping and the strength of coupling to $c$-axis modes. We demonstrate that materials with the largest coupling to the out-of-phase bond-buckling (``$B_{1g}$") oxygen phonon branch also have the largest T$_c$'s. In light of this observation we present model T$_c$ calculations using a two-well model where phonons work in conjunction with a dominant pairing interaction, presumably due to spin fluctuations, indicating how phonons can generate sizeable enhancements to T$_c$ despite the relatively small coupling strengths. The photo-induced metal-insulator transition is studied by the numerical simulation of real-time quantum dynamics of a double-exchange model. The spatial and temporal evolutions of the system during the transition have been revealed including (i) the threshold behavior with respect to the intensity and energy of light, (ii) multiplication of particle-hole (p-h) pairs by a p-h pair of high energy, and (iii) the space-time pattern formation such as (a) the stripe controlled by the polarization of light, (b) coexistence of metallic and insulating domains, and (c) dynamical spontaneous symmetry-breaking associated with the spin spiral formation imposed by the conservation of total spin for small energy-dissipation rates.

We investigate the interplay between strong electron correlations and charge-lattice interaction in cuprates. The coupling between half breathing bond stretching phonons and doped holes in the t-t'-J model is studied by limited phonon basis exact diagonalization method. Nonadiabatic electron-phonon interaction leads to the splitting of the phonon spectral function at half-way to the zone boundary at $\vec{q}_s=\{(\pm \pi / 2, 0), (0, \pm \pi / 2) \}$ and to low energy kink feature in the electron dispersion, in agreement with experimental observations. Much progress has been made recently in the study of the effects of electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling in doped insulators using angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), yielding evidence for the dominant role of el-ph interactions in underdoped cuprates. As these studies have been limited to doped Mott insulators, the important question arises how this compares with doped band insulators where similar el-ph couplings should be at work. The archetypical case is the perovskite SrTiO$_3$ (STO), well known for its giant dielectric constant of 10000 at low temperature, exceeding that of La$_2$CuO$_4$ by a factor of 500. Based on this fact, it has been suggested that doped STO should be the archetypical bipolaron superconductor. Here we report an ARPES study from high-quality surfaces of lightly doped SrTiO$_3$. Comparing to lightly doped Mott insulators, we find the signatures of only moderate electron-phonon coupling: a dispersion anomaly associated with the low frequency optical phonon with a $\lambda'\sim0.3$ and an overall bandwidth renormalization suggesting an overall $\lambda'\sim0.7$ coming from the higher frequency phonons. Further, we find no clear signatures of the large pseudogap or small polaron phenomena. These findings demonstrate that a large dielectric constant itself is not a good indicator of el-ph coupling and highlight the unusually strong effects of the el-ph coupling in doped Mott insulators.

We investigate quantum dynamics of the excited electronic states in the double-exchange model at half-filling by solving coupled equations for the quantum evolution of electrons and Landau-Lifshits-Gilbert equation for classical spins. The non-adiabatic quantum transitions driving the relaxation are coordinated through the self-organized space-time structure of the electron/spin dynamics leading to a resonant precession analogous to the ESR process., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

A novel time-reversal symmetry breaking state is found theoretically in the Josephson junction between the two-gap superconductor and the conventional s-wave superconductor. This occurs due to the frustration between the three order parameters analogous to the two antiferromagnetically coupled XY-spins put under a magnetic field. This leads to the interface states with the energies inside the superconducting gap.
