The excessive intake of sodium (Na) and insufficient intake of potassium (K) are major concerns in the prevention of hypertension. Using low-Na/K seasonings (reducing 25% of the NaCl and adding K salt) may improve the dietary Na/K ratio and help prevent hypertension. To devise an intervention study using low-Na/K seasonings at a company cafeteria, we calculated the Na and K contents of the meals served at the cafeteria and estimated changes in the intakes when suitable low-Na/K seasonings were used. We also considered using milk as a good source of K. We used an ingredient list of a company cafeteria and calculated Na and K contents in each dish. The average amounts of NaCl and K per use were 5.04 g and 718 mg, respectively. Seasonings contributed 70.9% of the NaCl. With the use of low-Na/K seasonings, an estimated reduction in NaCl of 0.8 g/day and an estimated increase in K of 308 mg/day was achieved. With an additional serving (200 mL) of milk, NaCl was reduced by 0.57 g/day and K was increased by 610 mg/day, with an overall decrease in the dietary Na/K ratio from 3.20 to 2.40. The use of low-Na/K seasonings and dairy may improve the dietary Na/K ratio among cafeteria users and help prevent hypertension.

Previous studies have primarily focused on quality of imaging in radiotherapy planning computed tomography (RTCT), with few investigations on imaging doses. To our knowledge, this is the first study aimed to investigate the imaging dose in RTCT to determine baseline data for establishing national diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in Japanese institutions. A survey questionnaire was sent to domestic RT institutions between 10 October and 16 December 2021. The questionnaire items were volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol), dose-length product (DLP), and acquisition parameters, including use of auto exposure image control (AEC) or image-improving reconstruction option (IIRO) for brain stereotactic irradiation (brain STI), head and neck (HN) intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (lung SBRT), breast-conserving radiotherapy (breast RT), and prostate IMRT protocols. Details on the use of motion-management techniques for lung SBRT were collected. Consequently, we collected 328 responses. The 75th percentiles of CTDIvol were 92, 33, 86, 23, and 32 mGy and those of DLP were 2805, 1301, 2416, 930, and 1158 mGy·cm for brain STI, HN IMRT, lung SBRT, breast RT, and prostate IMRT, respectively. CTDIvol and DLP values in institutions that used AEC or IIRO were lower than those without use for almost all sites. The 75th percentiles of DLP in each treatment technique for lung SBRT were 2541, 2034, 2336, and 2730 mGy·cm for free breathing, breath holding, gating technique, and real-time tumor tracking technique, respectively. Purpose: Research has shown that a higher dose of bupivacaine administered in continuous paravertebral block (CPVB) provides a greater analgesic effect after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). In this randomized, controlled, double-blind study, we hypothesized that 0.25% 8 ml/h of levobupivacaine administered in CPVB after VATS provides a greater analgesic effect than 0.125% 8 ml/h., Methods: Fifty patients who underwent unilateral VATS were randomized to receive a postoperative continuous infusion of 0.125% (low group, n = 25) or 0.25% (high group, n = 25) levobupivacaine at 8 mL/h for CPVB. The primary outcome was the visual analog scale (VAS) score during coughing on the morning of postoperative day (POD) 1. The secondary outcomes were the VAS scores at rest and during coughing on POD 2, the number of anesthetized dermatomes, the frequency of rescue analgesics, postoperative nausea and vomiting, patient satisfaction, and adverse events and complications., Results: There was no significant difference in the VAS score during coughing on the morning of POD 1 between the low and high groups [median, 37.5 (interquartile range 21-50) vs. 40.0 (interquartile range 21-50), respectively; p = 0.79]. Skin sensitization is an allergic reaction caused by certain chemical substances, and is an important factor to be taken into consideration when evaluating the safety of numerous types of products. Although animal testing has long been used to evaluate skin sensitization, the recent trend to regulate such testing has led to the development and use of alternative methods. Skin sensitization reactions are summarized in the form of an adverse outcome pathway consisting of four key events (KE), including covalent binding to skin proteins (KE1), keratinocyte activation (KE2), and dendritic cell activation (KE3). Equivalent alternative methods have been developed for KE1 to KE3, but no valid alternative has yet been developed for the evaluation of KE4 and T-cell activation. Current alternative methods rely on data from KE1 to KE3 to predict the effect of chemicals on skin sensitization. The addition of KE4 data is expected to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of such predictions. The aim of this study was to establish an assay to evaluate KE4 T-cell activation to supplement data on skin sensitization related to KE4. To evaluate T-cell activation, the Jurkat T-cell line stably expressing luciferase downstream of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-2 promoter was used. After exposure to known skin sensitizing agents and control substances, luciferase activity measurements revealed that this assay was valid for evaluating skin sensitization. However, two skin sensitizers known to have immunosuppressive effects on T-cells reacted negatively in this assay. Background: The indication for endoscopic resection for submucosally invasive colorectal cancer (T1-CRC) depends on the preoperative diagnosis of invasion depth. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the association between barium enema examination (BE) profile views and depth of submucosal (SM) invasion in CRCs., Methods: We reviewed the radiographic and endoscopic findings of 145 T1-CRCs diagnosed from 2008 to 2019. We measured the widths of horizontal and vertical rigidity under a BE profile view corresponding to CRC and compared the values with SM invasion depth. Horizontal rigidity was defined as the horizontal length and vertical rigidity as the vertical width of the barium defect corresponding to each target lesion. The most appropriate cut-off values for predicting SM invasion ≥1.8 mm were calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis., Results: Values of horizontal rigidity (r = 0.626, P < 0.05) and vertical rigidity (r = 0.482, P < 0.05) correlated significantly with SM invasion depth. The most appropriate cut-off values for the prediction of SM invasion depth ≥ 1.8 mm were 4.5 mm for horizontal rigidity, with an accuracy of 80.7%; and 0.7 mm for vertical rigidity, with an accuracy of 77.9%. The prevalence of lympho-vascular invasion was significantly different when those cut-off values were applied (43.2% vs. 17.5% for horizontal rigidity, P < 0.005)., Conclusions: In T1-CRC, values of horizontal and vertical rigidities under a BE profile view were correlated with SM invasion depth. While the accuracy of the rigidities for the prediction of SM invasion depth ≥ 1.8 mm was not high, horizontal rigidity may be predictive of lympho-vascular invasion, thus aiding in therapeutic decision-making., (© 2021. Peripheral nerve blocks for postoperative pain management in distal radius fracture fixation with volar locking plates can cause undesirable motor paralysis. We performed bilateral ultrasound-guided selective sensory nerve blocks to the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm, superficial branch of the radial nerve, and anterior interosseous nerve for a patient undergoing bilateral distal radius fracture fixation with volar locking plates. The diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are one of several effective tools for optimizing nuclear medicine examinations and reducing patient exposure. With the advances in imaging technology and alterations of examination protocols, the DRLs must be reviewed periodically. The first DRLs in Japan were established in 2015, and since 5 years have passed, it is time to review and revise the DRLs. We conducted a survey to investigate the administered activities of radiopharmaceuticals and the radiation doses of computed tomography (CT) in hybrid CT accompanied by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT and positron emission tomography (PET)/CT. We distributed a Web-based survey to 915 nuclear medicine facilities throughout Japan and survey responses were provided by 256 nuclear medicine facilities (response rate 28%). We asked for the facility's median actual administered activity and median radiation dose of hybrid CT when SPECT/CT or PET/CT was performed for patients with standard habitus in the standard protocol of the facility for each nuclear medicine examination. We determined the new DRLs based on the 75th percentile referring to the 2015 DRLs, drug package inserts, and updated guidelines. The 2020 DRLs are almost the same as the 2015 DRLs, but for the relatively long-lived radionuclides, the DRLs are set low due to the changes in the Japanese delivery system. There are no items set higher than the previous values. Although the DRLs determined this time are roughly equivalent to the DRLs used in the US, overall they tend to be higher than the European DRLs. The DRLs of the radiation dose of CT in hybrid CT vary widely depending on each imaging site and the purpose of the examination.

Background: Conductive sheets of cellulose and carbon nanomaterials and its human skin applications are an interesting research aspect as they have potential for applications for skin compatibility. Hence it is needed to explore the effects and shed light on these applications., Method: To fabricate wearable, portable, flexible, lightweight, inexpensive, and biocompatible composite materials, carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) were used as precursors to prepare CNH-HEC (Cnh-cel) composite sheets. Cnh-cel sheets were prepared with different loading concentrations of CNHs (10, 20 50,100 mg) in 200 mg cellulose. To fabricate the bio-compatible sheets, a pristine composite of CNHs and HEC was prepared without any pretreatment of the materials., Results: The obtained sheets possess a conductivity of 1.83 × 10 - 10  S/m and bio-compatible with human skin. Analysis for skin-compatibility was performed for Cnh-cel sheets by h-CLAT in vitro skin sensitization tests to evaluate the activation of THP-1 cells. It was found that THP-1 cells were not activated by Cnh-cel; hence Cnh-cel is a safe biomaterial for human skin. It was also found that the composite allowed only a maximum loading of 100 mg to retain the consistent geometry of free-standing sheets of < 100 μm thickness. Since CNHs have a unique arrangement of aggregates (dahlia structure), the composite is homogeneous, as verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other functional properties investigated by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), conductivity measurement, tensile strength measurement, and skin sensitization., Conclusion: It can be concluded that cellulose and CNHs sheets are conductive and compatible to human skin applications., Competing Interests: Competing interestsThe authors declare that they have no competing interest., (© The Author(s) 2020.)

Neck clipping of basilar trunk aneurysms, particularly those of a large size, is challenging because of its location. Here, we report a case of a basilar artery aneurysm successfully treated with neck clipping using rapid ventricular pacing(RVP). A 67-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for treatment of a large basilar artery aneurysm. Although coiling was considered, we performed neck clipping of this aneurysm because of the expected radical therapeutic effect. The patient was positioned in the right park-bench position, and right suboccipital craniotomy was performed. The aneurysm was mainly approached via the right supracerebellar route. RVP softened the aneurysm for easy dissection and insertion of multiple clips. The postoperative course was uneventful, and she was discharged 1 week later without neurological deficits. RVP should be considered for the treatment of complex aneurysms as adjunctive techniques.

The preparation of phthalimides cross-conjugated with an azulene ring was established by a one-pot Diels-Alder reaction of the corresponding 2-aminofuran derivatives with several maleimides, without the isolation of the intermediately formed [4 + 2] cycloadducts. The structure, optical and electrochemical properties of the novel phthalimide derivatives were clarified by single-crystal X-ray analysis, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra, spectroelectrochemistry and voltammetry experiments, and theoretical calculations. These results indicated that the substituents on the azulene ring greatly affect the optical and electrochemical properties of the molecules.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to determine the optimal imaging conditions for four-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (4D-CBCT) using an X-ray tube and a flat-panel detector mounted on a radiotherapy device., Methods: The optimal imaging conditions were examined by changing the gantry speed (GS) parameter that affected the exposure time. Exposed dose during imaging and image quality of moving phantom were compared between examined conditions., Results: The weighted computed tomography dose index (CTDIW) decreased linearly with increasing GS. However, when GS was 180°/min or faster, the image quality degraded, and errors of 1 mm or more were observed regarding the size of mock tumor in the moving phantom. The accuracy of automatic image matching was within 0.1 mm when GS of 120°/min or slower was chosen., Conclusion: From the results of this study, we concluded that GS of 120°/min is the optimum imaging condition. Under this imaging condition, the exposure time and CTDIW can be reduced by about 50% without compromising the accuracy of image registration, compared to the conventional GS of 70°/min. In addition, it has been clarified that there is an event that image reconstruction is not performed correctly due to the influence of phantom artifacts without depending on GS.

"Autistic traits" include a wide range of severity levels. They are often subclinical, and widely distributed in the general population. It is possible that food selectivity due to hyper- or hypo-reactivity to smell or texture, an autistic feature, may result in inadequate nutrient intakes even among non-clinical adults with autistic traits. However, dietary intake of adults with autistic traits has not been elucidated. This study aimed to investigate an association between dietary intake and autistic traits. We cross-sectionally analyzed data of 1440 men and 613 women extracted from the Eating Habit and Well-Being study. Autistic traits were assessed using the Japanese version of the Subthreshold Autism Trait Questionnaire (SATQ), and dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Iron and vitamin B 12 intakes were marginally and inversely associated with the SATQ score in men. The SATQ score in women was positively associated with carbohydrate intake, but had an inverse association with protein, mineral, vitamin, and dietary fiber intakes. Low intakes of seaweed, fish and shellfish, and vegetables were observed in participants with severe autistic traits. Associations of autistic traits with food selectivity and low nutrient intakes should be further investigated to promote a new dietary strategy in the general population., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

An automated device has been developed to measure aqueous dimethyl sulfide (DMSaq), its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), and atmospheric gaseous dimethyl sulfide (DMSg). In addition to having a role in the oceanic atmosphere, DMS and DMSP have recently gained substantial interest within the biosciences and are suspected as chemoattractants for predators searching for prey. To provide the spatial resolution relevant for biogeochemical functions, fast and on-site analysis of these compounds is an important technique. The system described measures the dimethyl sulfur compounds by sequential vaporization of DMSaq and DMSP to their gas phase, which is then analyzed by chemiluminescence detection (SVG-CL). The device has five analysis modes (full, DMS, water, gas, and DMSP mode) that can be selected by the user depending on the required analyte or desired sampling rate. Seawater analyses were performed by the developed SVG-CL system and, simultaneously, by an ion molecule reaction-mass spectrometer and a gas chromatograph-flame photometric detector to verify quantitative analysis results. Results obtained by the new method/device agreed well with those by the other methods. Detection limits of the SVG-CL system are 0.02 ppbv and 0.04 nM for DMSg and DMSaq/DMSP, respectively, which are much better than those of the mass spectrometer. The SVG-CL system can be easily installed and operated on a boat. Spatial variability in DMS and DMSP off the coast of Japan were obtained, showing significant changes in the concentrations of the components at the brackish/saline water interface and at the channel between the closed and open seas.

Epidemiological studies have suggested that there is an association between diet and mental health. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the intake of six minerals and mental disorders in a cross-sectional study. We used data from the Eating Habit and Well-being study in Japanese workers. Kessler's six-item psychological distress scale was used to detect mental disorders, with a cut-off score of 12/13, and a validated food frequency questionnaire was used to estimate dietary mineral intake. A total of 2089 participants with no history of depression were included. The prevalence of mental disorders was 6.9%. The lowest quartiles of zinc, copper, and manganese intakes were associated with mental disorders, whereas the lowest quartiles of calcium, magnesium, and iron intake were not associated with mental disorders. Background: Oral health is thought to be associated with diet quality, and socioeconomic status (SES) affects both oral health and diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the number of teeth and dietary intake as well as nutritional biomarker, considering the subjects' SES., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 2049 individuals aged ≥ 50 years from the National Integrated Project for Prospective Observation of Non-communicable Disease and its Trends in the Aged 2010. The number of remaining teeth was categorized into age-specific quartiles (Q1 to Q4). We assessed the adjusted means and 95% confidence intervals for dietary variables by the number of teeth using analysis of covariance. Stratified analyses by SES were also conducted., Results: The intake of grain products was 31 g higher, and those of vegetables and meat were 30 g and 8 g lower, respectively, in Q1 (fewer teeth) than in Q4 (more teeth). Carbohydrate intake was higher whereas protein, minerals (potassium, magnesium, and zinc), vitamins (vitamins A, E, B 1 , B 6 , β-carotene, and folic acid), and dietary fiber intakes were lower among individuals with fewer teeth. Adjusted mean serum albumin levels were low in Q1. The associations between the number of teeth and dietary intake were more evident in individuals with a low SES., Conclusions: Having few remaining teeth was associated with a low nutrient intake and low serum albumin levels in middle-aged and older Japanese adults, and these associations were more evident in individuals with low SES.

Objectives: Shift workers are at an increased risk of diet-related chronic conditions. We aimed to investigate dietary intake and dinner timing among shift workers., Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to the employees of 43 companies in Japan between December 2013 and February 2014. The dietary intake of workers was assessed through a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Nutrient intake was evaluated by adjusting the total energy intake using a nutrient residual model. Analysis of covariance was used to obtain the means of total energy and nutrient intake by the work schedule (shift or daytime), and the means of total energy and nutrient intake by dinner timing (regular or irregular)., Results: Valid responses were obtained from 2,062 daytime and 302 shift workers. A valid response rate to the FFQ was slightly but significantly lower among shift workers than among daytime workers (87.1% and 91.8 %). When compared to daytime workers, shift workers were more likely to eat dinner at irregular times (46.7% vs. 3.6%). Shift work was associated with a higher mean body mass index (23.4 kg/m 2 vs. 22.3 kg/m 2 ), a higher proportion of being overweight (27.7% and 18.8%), higher total energy intake, and lower intakes of dietary fiber, vitamin B 2 , folic acid, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. Moreover, irregular dinner timing was associated with lower intakes of protein, folic acid, and zinc in daytime workers, and lower intakes of carbohydrate and copper in shift workers., Conclusions: These findings indicate a need to improve the diet of shift workers.

Background: A lower socioeconomic status (SES) may be related to the intake of unhealthy food; however, this relationship has not been examined in detail. This study was undertaken to examine relationships among food group intakes and SES in a representative Japanese population., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using the baseline data of NIPPON DATA2010, which is a prospective cohort study of the National Health and Nutrition Survey in Japan. A total of 2,898 participants were included in the baseline survey in 2010. The effects of age (<65 years and ≥65 years), equivalent household expenditure (EHE), and education attainment on food group intakes (gram per 1,000 kcal) were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance., Results: When EHE was lower, cereal intake was higher in men and women. Among men, fish, milk, and alcohol intakes were reduced with lower EHE. Among women, vegetable intake was reduced with lower EHE. In men and women, cereal intake was higher with lower education attainment. In contrast, meat intake was reduced with lower education attainment., Conclusions: Lower SES was associated with a higher cereal intake and lower vegetable, fish, meat, and milk intakes in a representative Japanese population. Socioeconomic discrepancies need to be considered in order to promote healthier dietary habits.

Background: Most studies on socioeconomic inequalities in oral health have not considered the effects of behavioral and biological factors and age differences. Furthermore, the nationwide status of inequalities remains unclear in Japan., Methods: We analyzed data from 2,089 residents aged ≥40 years throughout Japan. The lowest quartile of the number of remaining teeth for each 10-year age category was defined as poor oral health. Behavioral and biological factors included smoking status, obesity, diabetes mellitus, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and the use of dental devices. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of educational attainment and equivalent household expenditure (EHE) with oral health, and stratified analyses by age category were also conducted (40-64 years and ≥65 years)., Results: Lower education and lower EHE were significantly associated with an increased risk of poor oral health after adjusting for age, sex, employment status, marital and living statuses, and EHE/education; the odds ratio for junior high school education compared with ≥college education was 1.84 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.36-2.49), and the odds ratio of the lowest compared with the highest EHE quartile was 1.91 (95% CI, 1.43-2.56). Further adjustments for behavioral and biological factors attenuated but did not eliminate these associations. EHE was significantly associated with oral health among elderly adults only, with a significant interaction by age category., Conclusions: Those with a lower education and those with lower EHE had a significantly higher risk of poor oral health, even after adjustments for behavioral and biological factors.

In ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization, there is no standard technique either for the needle tip visualization or for the adequate needle angle and entry to the skin with short-axis view under out-of-plane technique. In the present study, we propose a novel technique named "stepwise flashing with triangulation", and the efficacy of this technique is assessed. Before and after a didactic session in which the technique was explained, 12 novice residents were asked to position the needle tip on or into the imitation vessels and to avoid deeper penetration by using an agar tissue phantom with ultrasound guidance. "Stepwise flashing" technique was for stepwise visualization of the needle tip, and "triangulation" technique was for adequate needle angle and entry to the skin. After the session, the success rate was increased and a deeper penetration rate was decreased. This technique will help us to facilitate vascular access and to avoid complications in clinical settings.

Purpose: The N-Isopropyl-p-[123I] Iodoamphetamine ( 123 I-IMP) SPECT imaging reduces the image quality and quantitative accuracy due to scatter and septal penetration occurred by radioactive uptake from outside of the field of view such as the lungs. We evaluated the influence of scatter and septal penetration using phantom-simulated radioactivity from outside of the field of view, and subsequently compared the effect of scatter and septal penetration corrections between the simulation-based effective scatter source estimation (ESSE) method and the multi-window method (ellipse approximation method)., Methods: We used the phantom filled with 10 and 25 kBq/mL for the brain and lung parts corresponding to radioactive concentration in the clinical study. The SPECT images were acquired with and without lung phantom using low-energy high-resolution (LEHR) and cardiac high-resolution (CHR) collimators. We quantitatively evaluated a brain phantom by count analysis and coefficient of variation as reference data without lung phantom simulated the radioactivity from outside of the field of view, and compared between two scatter corrections by each collimator., Results: The brain count in cerebral base with the ESSE method using LEHR collimator was higher than that of the ellipse approximation method. The whole brain count with the ellipse approximation method using CHR collimator shows 28.8% lower than the ESSE method, so that it suggests that the ellipse approximation method for LEHR collimator and the ESSE method for CHR collimator was close to reference counts. The coefficient of variation of the ESSE method was lower than that of the ellipse approximation method for both two collimators., Conclusions: It was possible to correct the scatter and penetration from outside the field of view with high accuracy, by using the ellipse approximation method with LEHR collimator and the ESSE method with CHR collimator.

We present two patients developing intraoperative massive bleeding and showed ischemic changes in the electrocardiogram and circulatory collapse accompanied by severe anemia owing to the delay of red blood cell concentrate transfusion. One patient underwent hepatectomy and the other pancreaticoduodenectomy. Their lowest hemoglobin concentration was around 2 g x dl(-1), and they showed ischemic changes in the electrocardiogram and severe decreases in blood pressure. The former received compatible red blood cell concentrate and the latter received uncrossmatched same blood group red blood cell concentrate immediately, and their electrocardiogram and blood pressure quickly improved. To avoid life-threatening anemia, emergency red blood cell concentrate transfusion including compatible different blood group transfusion should be applied for intraoperative massive bleeding.

To establish a detailed reaction mechanism for the condensation between a boronic acid, RB(OH)2, and a diol, H2L, in aqueous solution, the acid dissociation constants (Ka(BL)) of boronic acid diol esters (HBLs) were determined based on the well-established concept of conditional formation constants of metal complexes. The pKa values of HBLs were 2.30, 2.77, and 2.00 for the reaction systems, 2,4-difluorophenylboronic acid and chromotropic acid, 3-nitrophenylboronic acid and alizarin red S, and phenylboronic acid and alizarin red S, respectively. A general and precise reaction mechanism of RB(OH)2 with H2L in aqueous solution, which can serve as a universal reaction mechanism for RB(OH)2 and H2L, was proposed on the basis of (a) the relative kinetic reactivities of the RB(OH)2 and its conjugate base, that is, the boronate ion, toward H2L, and (b) the determined pKa values of HBLs. The use of the conditional formation constant, K', based on the main reaction: RB(OH)2 + H2L (K1)⇌ RB(L)(OH)(-) + H3O(+) instead of the binding constant has been proposed for the general reaction of uncomplexed boronic acid species (B') with uncomplexed diol species (L') to form boronic acid diol complex species (esters, BL') in aqueous solution at pH 5-11: B' + L' (K')⇌ BL'. A semi-solid polymer dosimetry system using agar was developed to measure the dose distribution close to metallic implants. Dosimetry of heterogeneous fields where electron density markedly varies is often problematic. This prompted us to develop a polymer gel dosimetry technique using agar to measure the dose distribution near substance boundaries. Varying the concentration of an oxygen scavenger (tetra-hydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride) showed the absorbed dose and transverse relaxation rate of the magnetic resonance signal to be linear between 3 and 12 Gy. Although a change in the dosimeter due to oxidization was observed in room air after 24 hours, no such effects were observed in the first 4 hours. The dose distribution around the metal implants was measured using agar dosimetry. The metals tested were a lead rod, a titanium hip joint, and a metallic stent. A maximum 30% dose increase was observed near the lead rod, but only a 3% increase in the absorbed dose was noted near the surface of the titanium hip joint and metallic stent. Semi-solid polymer dosimetry using agar thus appears to be a useful method for dosimetry around metallic substances.

A small, simple device was developed for trace analysis of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in natural waters. These compounds are known to be the major sources of cloud condensation nuclei in the oceanic atmosphere and ideally should be measured onsite because of their volatility and instability. First, chemical and physical vapor generations were examined, and simple pressurizing by injection of 30 mL of air using a syringe was adopted. Pressurized headspace air above a 10 mL water sample was introduced to a detection cell as a result of the pressure differential and mixed with ozone to induce chemiluminescence. Although the measurement procedure was simple, the method was very sensitive: sharp peaks appeared within seconds for nanomolar levels of DMS, and the limit of detection was 0.02 nmol L(-1) (1 ng L(-1)). Although interference from methanethiol was significant, this was successfully addressed by adding a small amount of Cd(2+) before DMS vapor generation. DMSP was also measured after hydrolysis to DMS, as previously reported. Pond water and seawater samples were analyzed, and DMS was found in both types of sample, whereas DMSP was observed only in seawater. The DMS/DMSP data obtained using the developed method were compared with data obtained by purge/trap and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the data from the two methods agreed, with good correlation (R(2) = 0.9956). The developed device is inexpensive, light (5 kg), simple to use, can be applied in the field, and is sensitive enough for fresh- and seawater analysis.

Resveratrol (RSV), 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene, is known to have many beneficial physiological activities. We have synthesized several stilbene analogues and have reported that the hydroxyl group in the 4' position of RSV exhibited strong radical scavenging action. Using stilbene analogs, we investigated the structure of RSV to explain its protective effect against obesity and type 2 diabetes. All six analogs used in this study inhibited the differentiation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes. 3-Hydroxy-trans stilbene (3(OH)ST), and 3,4'-dihydroxy-trans stilbene (3,4'(OH)2ST) increased glucose uptake and induced adenosine monophosphate kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation in C2C12 myotubes independently of insulin. An in vivo study using mice fed high-fat diets indicated that 3(OH)ST was more effective than RSV in improving insulin resistance. In conclusion, RSV and its derivatives, particularly 3(OH)ST, inhibited adipocyte differentiation and enhanced glucose uptake in the myotubes, resulting in a reduction of obesity and an improvement in glucose tolerance in vivo.
