Abstract

This review intends to discuss on greywater treatment technologies, which are the physiochemical, biological and advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment technologies that are used to remove organic, nutrient and surfactant pollutants in greywater. The focus of this study is to compare the treatment technologies to remove greywater pollutants in the coastal area. Each technology will be compared in terms of its advantages and disadvantages, including its potential in greywater treatment technologies development. Measurement parameters of water quality from other studies include physicochemical, organic content, nutrient, and surfactant that are developed from each greywater treatment mode. AOP has a huge potential in greywater treatment since the technology has a low cost of development, easy to install, and is able to be deployed on a small scale. The AOP could be combined with other treatment techniques to produce an improved output.

9. Synthesis of gold nanobipyramids as a sensing material for LSPR sensor.

Abstract

This study aims to synthesize gold nanobipyramids (GNBPs) and analyze their potential application in LSPR sensor. The synthesis of GNBPs are using two steps seed-mediated growth method, namely seeding and growth process. The GNBPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) to determine their optical, structural, and morphological properties. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of GNBPs shows that the t-SPR peak appears at the wavelength of 573 nm and the l-SPR peak is located at the wavelength of 755 nm. The results of XRD characterization at a diffraction angle of 30° - 70° showed three diffraction peaks at the diffraction angle of 2θ: 38.06°, 44.36° and 64.44°. The GNBPs have a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with crystal plane orientation of (111), (200), and (220). From the FESEM image, the percentage surface density of the GNBPs is 78.86% and the average values for length, width, and aspect ratio are 104.85 nm, 43.39 nm, and 2.46, respectively. The GNBPs are used as a sensing material in the LSPR sensor to detect three different types of analytes (DI water, acetone, and chlorpyrifos). Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate pesticide and toxic to human health. In LSPR sensing response, the spectrum reveals two resonant peaks for each analyte at a different position. The first peak is t-SPR peaks at wavelength positions of 545.95 nm, 546.20 nm, and 546.40 for DI water, acetone, and chlorpyrifos, respectively. Furthermore, as for the l-SPR peaks, the position of each peak is at the wavelengths of 803.40 nm, 803.45 nm, and 803.47 nm. Abstract

This paper presents the implementation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used in the plasmonic sensor as sensing material to detect toxic materials, namely Malathion. The plasmonic sensor is susceptible to the intended toxic materials with sufficient peak resonance position, intensities and wavelength shift are measured as sensing parameters. In addition, the plasmonic sensor is simple to set up and consists of a light source connected to two arms to a duplex fibre optic. The first arm transmits light to the sample from the light source beam, and the second arm transfers the reflected light to the spectrophotometer from the sample. The AuNPs was synthesised using the Seed Mediated Growth Methods (SMGM). This method consists of two stages: seeding and growth processes and the growth times for this experiment are set to 4 hours and 8 hours. The colour changes from yellow to reddish-brown during the seeding process and from colourless to purple during the growth process. The structural results confirmed the formation of AuNPs on the substrates at (111) and (200) planes, whereas the optical responses show a single plasmon resonance peak for both samples. The 8 hours sample with higher intensity is further applied as a sensing material in the detection of Malathion. The sensitivity of the sensor system was measured by recording the changes in peak positions and intensities of the surface plasmon resonance peaks on three different mediums, namely, air, deionised water and malathion solution. Besides fast response, this sensor shows a stable response within 600 seconds during the stability test. The repeatability test has been done, and the sensor response demonstrated good repeatability over six cycles of testing, as seen by the intensities of DI water and Malathion, which almost entirely returned to their previous intensity after each medium change cycle. In conclusion, the plasmonic sensor-based AuNPs shows high sensitivity and good stability and repeatability towards toxic malathion pesticide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. Development of plasmonic sensor using gold nanobipyramids for detection of glyphosate based pesticide

Abstract

The development of plasmonic sensor using gold nanobipyramids (GNBPs) as sensing material for detection of glyphosate based pesticide (GBP) has been performed. The GNBPs was synthesised using seed-mediated growth method (SMGM). In the synthesis process, the effect of three different additive acid types which are chloric, sulfuric, and fluoric acid, and its concentration in growth solution were investigated to obtain optimum surface density and aspect ratio of GNBPs. The structure obtained is gold with face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure and diffraction peaks at 2θ values of 38.2º and 44.5º, which corresponding to (111) and (200) planes, respectively. The GNBPs have surface density from 5.21±0.44 to 91.46±3.32% and aspect ratio from 2.00±0.02 to 2.76±0.05. It exhibits two resonance peaks at wavelength around 550 and 580 nm, corresponding to transverse surface plasmon resonance (t-SPR) and at wavelength around 720 and 780 nm, corresponding to longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (l-SPR). In sensing study, the changes in the peak position and intensity for both t-SPR and l-SPR, respectively, in de-ionized water (DIW) as reference and glyphosate solutions as target analyte were measured. The presence of glyphosate as low as 1 mg/mL was successfully detected using this sensor. Besides, gold bone nanorods (GBNRs) and gold nanorods (GNRs) have been employed as sensing material and the results show the GNBPs�based plasmonic sensor demonstrate improved sensitivity compared to other sensors. For t-SPR band, the GNBPs provided sensitivity factor as high as 4.76 and 5.17 times larger than the sensitivity factor of GBNRs and GNRs, while for l-SPR band, the sensitivity factor of GNBPs are 2.87 times larger than GBNRs and 1.57 times larger than GNRs. 18. Effects of growth solutions ageing time to the formation of gold nanorods via two-step approach for plasmonic applications

Abstract

We demonstrate the structural reorganization of gold nanorods (GNRs) that could fine-tune localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) by using modified wet chemical synthesis on the solid substrate. Controlling the growth solution ageing time using the modifiable GNRs is an approach to overcome the limitations of rods formation due to inhomogeneous and uncontrollable size and aspect ratio. In this study, the suitable ageing time of GNRs was determined to produce optimum GNRs in terms of surface density and aspect ratio. As the ageing time was increased from 30 min to 24 h, the colour of the growth solution was changed from light to dark purple. The change is associated with the density of the nanorods formation. The optical spectral peaks of GNRs occur in a range between 500 nm and 800 nm in the visible and near-infrared region spectrum for transverse surface resonance (t-SPR) and longitudinal surface resonance (l-SPR), respectively. From the morphological analysis, it was found that 20 h ageing time resulting in high density and homogeneous GNRs with 74.81% surface density with 4.23 ± 0.04 aspect ratio. Hence, the growth ageing time of GNRs can be manipulated to control their shape evolution and dimension in terms of size and aspect ratio. The controllable aspect ratio and size GNRs can be potentially used as sensing material in plasmonic applications.

Abstract

The gold nanobipyramids (GNBPs) have attracted wide attention in field of sensing, biomedicine, catalysis and optoelectronics due to strong local electric field enhancement and surface plasmon resonance originated from their sharp tips. In GNBPs synthesis process, CTAB is usually used as a surfactant which plays a role as capping and stabilizing agents. However, CTAB surfactant is known as a toxic and thus hindering the GNBPs application in a biomedical related research. In this paper, for the first time we reported the simplest approach for surface modification of CTAB surfactant capped GNBPs using an amine functionalization or known as amine functionalized GNBPs. The optical properties and functionalization mechanism were investigated in this paper. In addition, the detailed understanding of the GNBPs-amine bond and its physical arrangement also were explained in this work. 27. Synthesis of Gold Nanorices on ITO Substrate Using Silver Seed-Mediated Growth Method

Abstract

Herein, we propose a seed-mediated growth method for synthesis of gold nanorices directly grown on the substrate using silver seed. The as prepared sample was characterized using UV-Vis spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The UV-Vis spectrum of the sample shows transversal surface plasmon resonance (t-SPR) peak at wavelength 541 nm and longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (l-SPR) peak at wavelength 730 nm. The FESEM image confirmed the morphology of gold nanostructures are rice-like shape. Typically, the nanorices have long axis (a) 55.54±3.30 nm, short axis (b) 28.71±2.30 nm, and aspect ratio (a/b) 1.98±0.09. The XRD pattern of the sample at diffraction angle (2θ) in the range of 10º-70º reveals three peaks at 38.18º, 44.48º, and 64.67º which corresponding to (111), (200), and (220) Bragg’s reflection of face centers cubic lattice Gold (ICSD file No. 98-005-3763). The strong peak intensity at 38.18º represents the nanorices growth in the (111) direction. The gold nanostructures with rice-like shape which exhibit two localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) thus it has very potential for application in plasmonic sensing

Abstract

Abstract: A liquid-phase deposition method enables the synthesis of a unique anatase TiO2 structure, which consists of poriferous microtablets with a hairy nanowire skin and a body constructed by a brick-like assembly of nanocuboids, directly onto an ITO substrate. The poriferous TiO2 microtablets (PTM) have square-shaped, rounded vertices, edges that are 10µm in length and a thickness of approximately 5μm. They can be grown at a high density onto an ITO surface from a growth solution that contains ammonium hexafluoro titanate and boric acid. The nanowires that decorate the PTM surface have a diameter of 10nm and a length of approximately 200nm. Its bulk structure is constructed from a brick-like assembly of nanocuboids with a width, length and thickness of approximately 10, 20 and 5nm, respectively. The driving factor for the formation of this structure is oriented attachment under kinetic control. The preliminary results of the application of this structure in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) devices indicate a power conversion efficiency as high as 3.0%. Because the active surface area in the PTM is large enough for dye adsorption (for a typical dye loading as high as approximately 936nmol/cm2) and surface reactions, a high-efficiency DSSC device may be achievable using this new structure if the optimum conditions are obtained. Abstract

The extensive use of pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture has led to significant environmental pollution, particularly in aqueous systems. This review provides an inclusive overview of the advancements in the application of gold nanoparticles (GNPs), specifically for the sensing of pesticides and fertilizers on surface water. The novelty of this work lies in its focused analysis of the unique localized surface plasmon resonance properties of GNPs that enable highly sensitive and selective detection of contaminants on surface water. Various synthesis methods and detection mechanisms are discussed, emphasizing the integration of GNP‐based sensors with modern analytical techniques to enhance detection limits and response time. The review also highlights the significance of monitoring agricultural chemicals in water systems from an environmental perspective. In addition, this review also reveals the potential of GNPs contribution toward sustainable agricultural practices by providing reliable, rapid, and cost‐effective sensing solutions. Future perspectives on the development of GNP‐based sensors, including the fundamental challenges in designing GNP sensors, such as incorporation with other materials, miniaturized and portable sensing devices, and field‐testing validation are also presented. 37. Preparation and Characterization of TiO2 Nanowire - Cu2O Nanocube Composite Thin Film

Abstract

Composite of TiO2 nanowire and Cu2O nanocube has been prepared. TiO2 nanowire with ~240nm in thickness and 20 nm in length were synthesized by using liquid phase deposition(LPD) method at 50oC for 4h on ITO substrate. The anatase phase of TiO2 nanowire was obtained by annealing the samples at 400oC for 1hin air. The Cu2O nanocubes were prepared by the reduction of Cu2+ions with ascorbic acid in the present of trisodium citrate and sodium dodecilsulfat (SDS) surfactant under an alkaline condition. The SDS addition was added with various concentrations namely 10 mM, 18 mM, and 26 mM during the Cu2O preparation for spin-coated onto TiO2 nanowire at 3000 rpm for 30s. An optical property of TiO2 Nanowire - Cu2O Nanocube has been characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy.The original TiO2 nanowire has single absorption peak at 318 nm, but it was shifted to 321 nm as Cu2O/SDS addition. A new peak at 440 nm was as the Cu2O nanocube absorption spectra. The Cu2O nanocube addition to the TiO2 nanostructure film caused increase in the optical absorption of the system in the region 400 – 800 nm. We also studied the absorption properties of the hybrid system when Cu2O nanocube preparation under SDS condition. It was that found the increase in the SDS concentration has caused the optical absorption of the hybrid in this region decreased. This is believed due to the decrease of Cu2O nanocube size as the SDS concentration increase. This could be due to change in the TiO2 nanowire-Cu2O nanocube hybrid-structure. This cooperate may find use in photoelectrochemical application.
