During the last 5 Ma the Earth's ocean-atmosphere system passed through several major transitions, many of which are discussed as possible triggers for human evolution. A classic in this context is the possible influence of the closure of the Panama Strait, the intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation, a stepwise increase in aridity in Africa, and the first appearance of the genus Homo about 2.5 - 2.7 Ma ago. Apart from the fact that the correlation between these events does not necessarily imply causality, many attempts to establish a relationship between climate and evolution fail due to the challenge of precisely localizing an a priori unknown number of changes potentially underlying complex climate records. The kernel-based Bayesian inference approach applied here allows inferring the location, generic shape, and temporal scale of multiple transitions in established records of Plio-Pleistocene African climate. By defining a transparent probabilistic analysis strategy, we are able to identify conjoint changes occurring across the investigated terrigenous dust records from Ocean Drilling Programme (ODP) sites in the Atlantic Ocean (ODP 659), Arabian (ODP 721/722) and Mediterranean Sea (ODP 967). The study indicates a two-step transition in the African climate proxy records at (2.35-2.10) Ma and (1.70 - 1.50) Ma, that may be associated with the reorganization of the Hadley-Walker Circulation. .

The hypothesis of a connection between the onset (or intensification) of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG), the stepwise increase in African aridity (and climate variability) and an important mammalian (including hominin) species turnover is a textbook example of the initiation of a scientific idea and its propagation in science. It is, however, also an example of the persistent popularity of a hypothesis despite mounting evidence against it. The first part of our work analyzes of the history of the scientific idea by seeking its roots, including coincidental meetings and exchanges between of scientists, at project meetings, conferences and workshops. The consequences of this idea are examined and its influence on subsequent scientific investigations both before and after it has been falsified. In the second part of our investigation, we examine why the idea that the high latitudes have a major control on the climate of the low latitudes and thus early human evolution persists. For this purpose, an attempt is made to understand the original interpretation of the data, with special consideration of the composition of the scientific team and their scientific backgrounds and persuasions. Some of the key records in support of the hypothesis of a step-wise transition will be statistically re-analyzed by fitting change-point models to the time series to determine the midpoint and duration of the transition – in case such a transition is found in the data. A critical review of key publications in support of such a connection and a statistical re-analysis of key data sets leads to three conclusions: (1) Northern Hemisphere Glaciation is a gradual process between ~3.5–2.5 Ma, not an abrupt onset, either at ~2.5 Ma, nor at ~2.8 Ma, or any other time in the Late Cenozoic Era, (2) the trend towards greater aridity in Africa during this period was also gradual, not stepwise in the sense of a consistent transition of a duration of ≤0.2 Ma, and (3) accordingly, a step-wise change in environmental conditions cannot be used to explain an important mammalian (including hominin) species turnover.

Cosmic-ray muons can be used for the non-destructive imaging of spent nuclear fuel in sealed dry storage casks. The scattering data of the muons after traversing provides information on the thereby penetrated materials. Based on these properties, we investigate and discuss the theoretical feasibility of detecting single missing fuel rods in a sealed cask for the first time. We perform simulations of a vertically standing generic cask model loaded with fuel assemblies from a pressurized water reactor and muon detectors placed above and below the cask. By analysing the scattering angles and applying a significance ratio based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistic we conclude that missing rods can be reliably identified in a reasonable measuring time period depending on their position in the assembly and cask, and on the angular acceptance criterion of the primary, incoming muons., to be published/submitted in/to European Physical Journal N

A critical review of key publications on the topic and statistical re-analysis of key records of global ice volume and African climate leads to three conclusions: (1) The Northern Hemisphere Glaciation was a gradual process occurring between ∼3.5 and 2.5 Ma, not a single event at ∼2.8 Ma or at any other time. (2) A consistent stepwise (+/−0.2 Ma) transition toward greater aridity in Africa at ∼2.8 Ma does not exist; instead, there are regionally different, gradual transitions partly in connection with the intensification of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation, but above all with the establishment of the tropical Walker Circulation after ∼2 Ma. (3) Mammalian (including hominin) species turnovers at this time also appear to have been gradual, rather than stepwise.

The paper presents different methods for evaluating sensitivities and uncertainties of the effective delayed neutron fraction (βeff) with respect to microscopic nuclear data in the framework of the SCALE 6.2 code system. The prompt k ratio method is used to calculate βeff approximately. Sensitivities of βeff to microscopic reaction data are calculated with deterministic linear perturbation theory from sensitivities of the multiplication factor, and by performing linear regression analysis on results obtained from random sampling. The latter approach is also applied for estimating sensitivities of kinetic parameters in six delayed neutron groups, as obtained by adjoint flux weighting in lattice calculations, to nuclear reactions. Finally, it is demonstrated that the uncertainties of βeff strongly depend on the choice of the covariance data set; in particular, the use of SCALE 6.2 covariance data for the average number of delayed neutrons per fission in some cases leads to very high βeff uncertainties.

The paper presents solutions for the neutron transport sub-exercises regarding pin cells, fuel assemblies, and supercells of the OECD/NEA UAM-SFR Benchmark. For this, the GRS XSUSA methodology is applied with a recently introduced approach performing linear regression analysis on the output samples, denoted as XSUSA(LR). The main purpose for this is to calculate sensitivity profiles and the main contributions to the total output uncertainties via the first-order uncertainty propagation formula, i.e. by multiplying the corresponding total/partial nuclear data covariance matrices with the total/partial sensitivity vectors. Confidence intervals were estimated by applying Jackknife resampling. Implicit effects are considered. All output uncertainties are compared to the corresponding values calculated with deterministic linear perturbation theory using TSUNAMI from SCALE 6.2.3. Various optimizations were applied with respect to nuclear data and problem geometry. The output uncertainties are significant – around 1.5% for multiplication factors and 5% for Doppler and sodium void reactivity effects.

The impact of nuclear data uncertainties is studied for the reactor power and the reactivity during control rod withdrawal transients with reactivity insertions of 0.5$ and 0.97$, respectively, for a PWR mini-core model. Multi-group cross sections, the multiplicities of both prompt and delayed neutrons, and fission spectra are varied by the application of the random sampling-based method XSUSA with covariance data of SCALE 6.1 supplemented by JENDL-4.0. The varied multi-group data are used by TRITON/NEWT to generate varied 2-group cross sections, which are then applied in neutron-kinetic/thermal-hydraulic calculations with DYN3D-ATHLET. A significant impact on both the reactivity uncertainty and the power uncertainty is observed. Since the distributional properties of the output time series vary across the problem time, the distribution-free Wilks tolerance limit is applied as a robust uncertainty measure to complex time series patterns.
