We introduce an emulator-based method to model the cross-correlation between cosmological voids and galaxies. This allows us to model the effect of cosmology on void finding and on the shape of the void-galaxy cross-correlation function, improving on previous template-based methods. We train a neural network using the AbacusSummit simulation suite and fit to data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey sample. We recover information on the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions (RSD), and the geometry of the Universe through the Alcock-Paczy\'nski (AP) effect, measuring $\Omega_{\rm m} = 0.330\pm 0.020$ and $\sigma_8 = 0.777^{+0.047}_{-0.062}$ for a $\Lambda \rm{CDM}$ cosmology. Comparing to results from a template-based method, we find that fitting the shape of the void-galaxy cross-correlation function provides more information and leads to an improvement in constraining power. In contrast, we find that errors on the AP measurements were previously underestimated if void centres were assumed to have the same response to the AP effect as galaxies - a common simplification. Overall, we recover a $28\%$ reduction in errors for $\Omega_{\rm{m}}$ and similar errors on $\sigma_8$ with our new, more comprehensive, method. Under the assumption of statistical isotropy, and in the absence of directional selection effects, a stack of voids is expected to be spherically symmetric, which makes it an excellent object to use for an Alcock-Paczy\'nski (AP) test. This is commonly done using the void-galaxy cross-correlation function (CCF), which has emerged as a competitive probe, especially in combination with the galaxy-galaxy auto correlation function. Current studies of the AP effect around voids assume that the void centre positions transform under the choice of fiducial cosmology in the same way as galaxy positions. We show that this assumption, though prevalent in the literature, is complicated by the response of void-finding algorithms to shifts in tracer positions. Using stretched simulation boxes to emulate the AP effect, we investigate how the void-galaxy CCF changes under AP, revealing an additional effect imprinted in the CCF that must be accounted for. The effect comes from the response of void finders to the distorted tracer field, reducing the amplitude of the AP signal in the CCF, and thus depends on the specific void finding algorithm used. We present results for four different void finding packages: $\texttt{revolver}$, $\texttt{vide}$, $\texttt{voxel}$, and the spherical void finder in the $\texttt{Pylians3}$ library, demonstrating how incorrect treatment of the AP effect results in biases in the recovered parameters for all of them. $ $Low density cosmic voids gravitationally lens the cosmic microwave background (CMB), leaving a negative imprint on the CMB convergence $\kappa$. This effect provides insight into the distribution of matter within voids, and can also be used to study the growth of structure. We measure this lensing imprint by cross-correlating the Planck CMB lensing convergence map with voids identified in the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 data set, covering approximately 4,200 deg$^2$ of the sky. We use two distinct void-finding algorithms: a 2D void-finder which operates on the projected galaxy density field in thin redshift shells, and a new code, Voxel, which operates on the full 3D map of galaxy positions. We employ an optimal matched filtering method for cross-correlation, using the MICE N-body simulation both to establish the template for the matched filter and to calibrate detection significances. Using the DES Y3 photometric luminous red galaxy sample, we measure $A_\kappa$, the amplitude of the observed lensing signal relative to the simulation template, obtaining $A_\kappa = 1.03 \pm 0.22$ ($4.6\sigma$ significance) for Voxel and $A_\kappa = 1.02 \pm 0.17$ ($5.9\sigma$ significance) for 2D voids, both consistent with $\Lambda$CDM expectations. We additionally invert the 2D void-finding process to identify superclusters in the projected density field, for which we measure $A_\kappa = 0.87 \pm 0.15$ ($5.9\sigma$ significance). The leading source of noise in our measurements is Planck noise, implying that future data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), South Pole Telescope (SPT) and CMB-S4 will increase sensitivity and allow for more precise measurements., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. Combining galaxy clustering information from regions of different environmental densities can help break cosmological parameter degeneracies and access non-Gaussian information from the density field that is not readily captured by the standard two-point correlation function (2PCF) analyses. However, modelling these density-dependent statistics down to the non-linear regime has so far remained challenging. We present a simulation-based model that is able to capture the cosmological dependence of the full shape of the density-split clustering (DSC) statistics down to intra-halo scales. Our models are based on neural-network emulators that are trained on high-fidelity mock galaxy catalogues within an extended-$\Lambda$CDM framework, incorporating the effects of redshift-space, Alcock-Paczynski distortions and models of the halo-galaxy connection. Our models reach sub-percent level accuracy down to $1\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ and are robust against different choices of galaxy-halo connection modelling. When combined with the galaxy 2PCF, DSC can tighten the constraints on $\omega_{\rm cdm}$, $\sigma_8$, and $n_s$ by factors of 2.9, 1.9, and 2.1, respectively, compared to a 2PCF-only analysis. We present a clustering analysis of the BOSS DR12 CMASS galaxy sample, combining measurements of the galaxy two-point correlation function and density-split clustering down to a scale of $1\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. Our theoretical framework is based on emulators trained on high-fidelity mock galaxy catalogues that forward model the cosmological dependence of the clustering statistics within an extended-$\Lambda$CDM framework, including redshift-space and Alcock-Paczynski distortions. Our base-$\Lambda$CDM analysis finds $\omega_{\rm cdm} = 0.1201\pm 0.0022$, $\sigma_8 = 0.792\pm 0.034$, and $n_s = 0.970\pm 0.018$, corresponding to $f\sigma_8 = 0.462\pm 0.020$ at $z \approx 0.525$, which is in agreement with Planck 2018 predictions and various clustering studies in the literature. We test single-parameter extensions to base-$\Lambda$CDM, varying the running of the spectral index, the dark energy equation of state, and the density of massless relic neutrinos, finding no compelling evidence for deviations from the base model. We model the galaxy-halo connection using a halo occupation distribution framework, finding signatures of environment-based assembly bias in the data. We validate our pipeline against mock catalogues that match the clustering and selection properties of CMASS, showing that we can recover unbiased cosmological constraints even with a volume 84 times larger than the one used in this study., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. The Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) three-dimensional correlation functions have been widely used to perform cosmological inference using the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale. While the traditional inference approach employs a data vector with several thousand data points, we apply near-maximal score compression down to tens of compressed data elements. We show that carefully constructed additional data beyond those linked to each inferred model parameter are required to preserve meaningful goodness-of-fit tests that guard against unknown systematics, and to avoid information loss due to non-linear parameter dependencies. We demonstrate, on suites of realistic mocks and DR16 data from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, that our compression approach is lossless and unbiased, yielding a posterior that is indistinguishable from that of the traditional analysis. We present an extended validation of semi-analytical, semi-empirical covariance matrices for the two-point correlation function (2PCF) on simulated catalogs representative of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) data collected during the initial two months of operations of the Stage-IV ground-based Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We run the pipeline on multiple effective Zel'dovich (EZ) mock galaxy catalogs with the corresponding cuts applied and compare the results with the mock sample covariance to assess the accuracy and its fluctuations. We propose an extension of the previously developed formalism for catalogs processed with standard reconstruction algorithms. We consider methods for comparing covariance matrices in detail, highlighting their interpretation and statistical properties caused by sample variance, in particular, nontrivial expectation values of certain metrics even when the external covariance estimate is perfect. With improved mocks and validation techniques, we confirm a good agreement between our predictions and sample covariance. This allows one to generate covariance matrices for comparable datasets without the need to create numerous mock galaxy catalogs with matching clustering, only requiring 2PCF measurements from the data itself. We present the first comprehensive Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) analysis of the DESI One-Percent survey Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) and Quasi-Stellar Object (QSO) samples. We constrain the HOD of each sample and test possible HOD extensions by fitting the redshift-space galaxy 2-point correlation functions in 0.15 < r < 32 Mpc/h in a set of fiducial redshift bins. We use AbacusSummit cubic boxes at Planck 2018 cosmology as model templates and forward model galaxy clustering with the AbacusHOD package. We achieve good fits with a standard HOD model with velocity bias, and we find no evidence for galaxy assembly bias or satellite profile modulation at the current level of statistical uncertainty. For LRGs in 0.4 < z < 0.6, we infer a satellite fraction of fsat = 11+-1%, a mean halo mass of log10 Mh = 13.40+0.02-0.02, and a linear bias of blin = 1.93+0.06-0.04. For LRGs in 0.6 < z < 0.8, we find fsat = 14+-1%, log10 Mh = 13.24+0.02-0.02, and blin = 2.08+0.03-0.03. For QSOs, we infer fsat = 3+8-2%, log10 Mh = 12.65+0.09-0.04, and blin = 2.63+0.37-0.26 in redshift range 0.8 < z < 2.1. Using these fits, we generate a large suite of high-fidelity galaxy mocks. We present the cosmological implications of measurements of void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Main Galaxy Sample (MGS), Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and extended BOSS (eBOSS) luminous red galaxy catalogues from SDSS Data Release 7, 12, and 16, covering the redshift range $0.07 < z < 1.0$. We fit a standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model as well as various extensions including a constant dark energy equation of state not equal to $-1$, a time-varying dark energy equation of state, and these same models allowing for spatial curvature. Results on key parameters of these models are reported for void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering alone, both of these combined, and all these combined with measurements from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and supernovae (SN). For the combination of void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering, we find tight constraints of $\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.356\pm 0.024$ for a base $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, $\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.391^{+0.028}_{-0.021}, w = -1.50^{+0.43}_{-0.28}$ additionally allowing the dark energy equation of state $w$ to vary, and $\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.331^{+0.067}_{-0.094}, w=-1.41^{+0.70}_{-0.31},\ \mathrm{and}\ \Omega_\mathrm{k} = 0.06^{+0.18}_{-0.13}$ further extending to non-flat models. The combined SDSS results from void-galaxy and galaxy-galaxy clustering in combination with CMB+SN provide a 30% improvement in parameter $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ over CMB+SN for $\Lambda$CDM, a 5% improvement in parameter $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ when $w$ is allowed to vary, and a 32% and 68% improvement in parameters $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ and $\Omega_\mathrm{k}$ when allowing for spatial curvature., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. We determine the product of the expansion rate and angular-diameter distance at redshift $z=2.3$ from the anisotropy of Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest correlations measured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our result is the most precise from large-scale structure at $z>1$. In flat $\Lambda$CDM we determine the matter density to be $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.36^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ from Ly$\alpha$ alone. The three-dimensional distribution of the Ly$\alpha$ forest has been extensively used to constrain cosmology through measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) scale. However, more cosmological information could be extracted from the full shapes of the Ly$\alpha$ forest correlations through the Alcock-Paczy\'nski (AP) effect. In this work, we prepare for a cosmological analysis of the full shape of the Ly$\alpha$ forest correlations by studying synthetic data of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). We use a set of one hundred eBOSS synthetic data sets in order to validate such an analysis. These mocks undergo the same analysis process as the real data. We perform a full-shape analysis on the mean of the correlation functions measured from the one hundred eBOSS realizations, and find that our model of the Ly$\alpha$ correlations performs well on current data sets. We show that we are able to obtain an unbiased full-shape measurement of $D_M/D_H(z_\mathrm{eff})$, where $D_M$ is the transverse comoving distance, $D_H$ is the Hubble distance, and $z_\mathrm{eff}$ is the effective redshift of the measurement. We test the fit over a range of scales, and decide to use a minimum separation of $r_\mathrm{min}=25\ h^{-1}\text{Mpc}$. We also study and discuss the impact of the main contaminants affecting Ly$\alpha$ forest correlations, and give recommendations on how to perform such analysis with real data. While the final eBOSS Ly$\alpha$ BAO analysis measured $D_M/D_H(z_\mathrm{eff}=2.33)$ with $4\%$ statistical precision, a full-shape fit of the same correlations could provide a $\sim2\%$ measurement.

The dependence of galaxy clustering on local density provides an effective method for extracting non-Gaussian information from galaxy surveys. The two-point correlation function (2PCF) provides a complete statistical description of a Gaussian density field. However, the late-time density field becomes non-Gaussian due to non-linear gravitational evolution and higher-order summary statistics are required to capture all of its cosmological information. Using a Fisher formalism based on halo catalogues from the Quijote simulations, we explore the possibility of retrieving this information using the density-split clustering (DS) method, which combines clustering statistics from regions of different environmental density. We show that DS provides more precise constraints on the parameters of the $\nu \Lambda$CDM model compared to the 2PCF, and we provide suggestions for where the extra information may come from. DS improves the constraints on the sum of neutrino masses by a factor of $7$ and by factors of 4, 3, 3, 6, and 5 for $\Omega_{\rm m}$, $\Omega_{\rm b}$, $h$, $n_s$, and $\sigma_8$, respectively. We compare DS statistics when the local density environment is estimated from the real or redshift-space positions of haloes. The inclusion of DS autocorrelation functions, in addition to the cross-correlation functions between DS environments and haloes, recovers most of the information that is lost when using the redshift-space halo positions to estimate the environment. The velocity profile of galaxies around voids is a key ingredient for redshift space distortion (RSD) measurements made using the void-galaxy correlation function. In this paper we use simulations to test whether the velocity profile of the tracers used to find the voids matches the velocity profile of the dark matter around these voids. A mismatch is expected and found in the inner part of voids, where tracers are very sparse. We discuss how this difference is caused by a selection effect where the void centre positions are correlated to the particular realization of the sparse tracers and their spatial distribution. In turn, this then affects the RSD void-galaxy correlation analysis. We show this by evaluating the Jacobian of the real to redshift space mapping using the tracer or matter velocity profile. Differences of the order of 20\% in the velocity profile translate into differences of the order of few percent in the Jacobian. This small discrepancy propagates to the monopole and quadrupole of the void-tracer correlation function, producing modifications of comparable magnitude to those from changes in $f\sigma_8$ at the level of the statistical uncertainties from current analyses., Comment: Author's Accepted Manuscript

We present measurements of the anisotropic cross-correlation of galaxies and cosmic voids in data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Main Galaxy Sample (MGS), Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and extended BOSS (eBOSS) luminous red galaxy catalogues from SDSS Data Releases 7, 12 and 16, covering the redshift range $0.07

We present constraints on cosmological parameters from the Pantheon+ analysis of 1701 light curves of 1550 distinct Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) ranging in redshift from $z=0.001$ to 2.26. This work features an increased sample size, increased redshift span, and improved treatment of systematic uncertainties in comparison to the original Pantheon analysis and results in a factor of two improvement in cosmological constraining power. For a Flat$\Lambda$CDM model, we find $\Omega_M=0.334\pm0.018$ from SNe Ia alone. For a Flat$w_0$CDM model, we measure $w_0=-0.90\pm0.14$ from SNe Ia alone, H$_0=73.5\pm1.1$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ when including the Cepheid host distances and covariance (SH0ES), and $w_0=-0.978^{+0.024}_{-0.031}$ when combining the SN likelihood with constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO); both $w_0$ values are consistent with a cosmological constant. We also present the most precise measurements to date on the evolution of dark energy in a Flat$w_0w_a$CDM universe, and measure $w_a=-0.1^{+0.9}_{-2.0}$ from Pantheon+ alone, H$_0=73.3\pm1.1$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ when including SH0ES, and $w_a=-0.65^{+0.28}_{-0.32}$ when combining Pantheon+ with CMB and BAO data. Finally, we find that systematic uncertainties in the use of SNe Ia along the distance ladder comprise less than one third of the total uncertainty in the measurement of H$_0$ and cannot explain the present "Hubble tension" between local measurements and early-Universe predictions from the cosmological model., Comment: 34 Pages, 16 Figures, 7 Tables. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. We propose a new method for fitting the full-shape of the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest three-dimensional (3D) correlation function in order to measure the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect. Our method preserves the robustness of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) analyses, while also providing extra cosmological information from a broader range of scales. We compute idealized forecasts for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) using the Ly$\alpha$ auto-correlation and its cross-correlation with quasars, and show how this type of analysis improves cosmological constraints. The DESI Ly$\alpha$ BAO analysis is expected to measure $H(z_\mathrm{eff})r_\mathrm{d}$ and $D_\mathrm{M}(z_\mathrm{eff})/r_\mathrm{d}$ with a precision of $\sim0.9\%$ each, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter, $r_\mathrm{d}$ is the comoving BAO scale, $D_\mathrm{M}$ is the comoving angular diameter distance and the effective redshift of the measurement is $z_\mathrm{eff}\simeq2.3$. By fitting the AP parameter from the full shape of the two correlations, we show that we can obtain a precision of $\sim0.5-0.6\%$ on each of $H(z_\mathrm{eff})r_\mathrm{d}$ and $D_\mathrm{M}(z_\mathrm{eff})/r_\mathrm{d}$. Furthermore, we show that a joint full-shape analysis of the Ly$\alpha$ auto-correlation and its cross-correlation with quasars can measure the linear growth rate times the amplitude of matter fluctuations in spheres of $8\;h^{-1}$Mpc, $f\sigma_8(z_\mathrm{eff})$. Such an analysis could provide the first ever measurement of $f\sigma_8(z_\mathrm{eff})$ at redshift $z_\mathrm{eff}>2$. By combining this with the quasar auto-correlation in a joint analysis of the three high-redshift two-point correlation functions, we show that DESI could be able to measure $f\sigma_8(z_\mathrm{eff}\simeq2.3)$ with a precision of $5-12\%$, depending on the smallest scale fitted.

Galaxy clusters are widely used to constrain cosmological parameters through their properties, such as masses, luminosity and temperature distributions. One should take into account all kind of biases that could affect these analyses in order to obtain reliable constraints. In this work, we study the difference in the properties of clusters residing in different large scale environments, defined by their position within or outside of voids, and the density of their surrounding space. We use both observational and simulation cluster and void catalogues, i.e. XCS and redMaPPer clusters, BOSS voids, and Magneticum simulations. We devise two different environmental proxies for the clusters and study their redshift, richness, mass, X-ray luminosity and temperature distributions as well as some properties of their galaxy populations. We use the Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test to discover that richer and more massive clusters are more prevalent in overdense regions and outside of voids. We also find that clusters of matched richness and mass in overdense regions and outside voids tend to have higher X-ray luminosities and temperatures. We present an analysis of the anisotropic redshift-space void-galaxy correlation in configuration space using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 16 luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample. This sample consists of LRGs between redshifts 0.6 and 1.0, combined with the high redshift $z>0.6$ tail of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 CMASS sample. We use a reconstruction method to undo redshift-space distortion (RSD) effects from the galaxy field before applying a watershed void-finding algorithm to remove bias from the void selection. We then perform a joint fit to the multipole moments of the correlation function for the growth rate $f\sigma_8$ and the geometrical distance ratio $D_M/D_H$, finding $f\sigma_8(z_\mathrm{eff})=0.356\pm0.079$ and $D_M/D_H(z_\mathrm{eff})=0.868\pm0.017$ at the effective redshift $z_\mathrm{eff}=0.69$ of the sample. The posterior parameter degeneracies are orthogonal to those from galaxy clustering analyses applied to the same data, and the constraint achieved on $D_M/D_H$ is significantly tighter. In combination with the consensus galaxy BAO and full-shape analyses of the same sample, we obtain $f\sigma_8=0.447\pm0.039$, $D_M/r_d=17.48\pm0.23$ and $D_H/r_d=20.10\pm0.34$. These values are in good agreement with the $\Lambda$CDM model predictions and represent reductions in the uncertainties of $13\%$, $23\%$ and $28\%$ respectively compared to the combined results from galaxy clustering, or an overall reduction of 55\% in the allowed volume of parameter space., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables including appendix. We present a void clustering analysis in configuration-space using the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) DR16 samples. These samples consist of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) combined with the high redshift tail of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) DR12 CMASS galaxies (called as LRG+CMASS sample), Emission Line Galaxies (ELG) and quasars (QSO). We build void catalogues from the three eBOSS DR16 samples using a ZOBOV-based algorithm, providing 2,814 voids, 1,801 voids and 4,347 voids in the LRG+CMASS, ELG and QSO samples, respectively, spanning the redshift range $0.6

We present the cosmological implications from final measurements of clustering using galaxies, quasars, and Ly$\alpha$ forests from the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) lineage of experiments in large-scale structure. These experiments, composed of data from SDSS, SDSS-II, BOSS, and eBOSS, offer independent measurements of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements of angular-diameter distances and Hubble distances relative to the sound horizon, $r_d$, from eight different samples and six measurements of the growth rate parameter, $f\sigma_8$, from redshift-space distortions (RSD). This composite sample is the most constraining of its kind and allows us to perform a comprehensive assessment of the cosmological model after two decades of dedicated spectroscopic observation. We show that the BAO data alone are able to rule out dark-energy-free models at more than eight standard deviations in an extension to the flat, $\Lambda$CDM model that allows for curvature. When combined with Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements of temperature and polarization the BAO data provide nearly an order of magnitude improvement on curvature constraints. The RSD measurements indicate a growth rate that is consistent with predictions from Planck primary data and with General Relativity. When combining the results of SDSS BAO and RSD with external data, all multiple-parameter extensions remain consistent with a $\Lambda$CDM model. Regardless of cosmological model, the precision on $\Omega_\Lambda$, $H_0$, and $\sigma_8$, remains at roughly 1\%, showing changes of less than 0.6\% in the central values between models. The inverse distance ladder measurement under a o$w_0w_a$CDM yields $H_0= 68.20 \pm 0.81 \, \rm km\, s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}$, remaining in tension with several direct determination methods. We present the cosmological analysis of the configuration-space anisotropic clustering in the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) DR16 galaxy sample. This sample consists of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) spanning the redshift range $0.6 < z < 1$, at an effective redshift of $z_{\rm eff}=0.698$. It combines 174 816 eBOSS LRGs and 202 642 BOSS CMASS galaxies. We extract and model the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and redshift-space distortions (RSD) features from the galaxy two-point correlation function to infer geometrical and dynamical cosmological constraints. The adopted methodology is extensively tested on a set of realistic simulations. The correlations between the inferred parameters from the BAO and full-shape correlation function analyses are estimated. This allows us to derive joint constraints on the three cosmological parameter combinations: $D_M(z)/r_d$, $D_H(z)/r_d$ and $f\sigma_8(z)$, where $D_M$ is the comoving angular diameter distance, $D_H$ is Hubble distance, $r_d$ is the comoving BAO scale, $f$ is the linear growth rate of structure, and $\sigma_8$ is the amplitude of linear matter perturbations. After combining the results with those from the parallel power spectrum analysis of Gil-Marin et al. 2020, we obtain the constraints: $D_M/r_d = 17.65 \pm 0.30$, $D_H/r_d = 19.77 \pm 0.47$, $f\sigma_8 = 0.473 \pm 0.044$. We analyse the large-scale clustering in Fourier space of emission line galaxies (ELG) from the Data Release 16 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. The ELG sample contains 173,736 galaxies covering 1,170 square degrees in the redshift range $0.6 < z < 1.1$. We perform a BAO measurement from the post-reconstruction power spectrum monopole, and study redshift space distortions (RSD) in the first three even multipoles. Photometric variations yield fluctuations of both the angular and radial survey selection functions. Those are directly inferred from data, imposing integral constraints which we model consistently. The full data set has only a weak preference for a BAO feature ($1.4\sigma$). At the effective redshift $z_{\rm eff} = 0.845$ we measure $D_{\rm V}(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 18.33_{-0.62}^{+0.57}$, with $D_{\rm V}$ the volume-averaged distance and $r_{\rm drag}$ the comoving sound horizon at the drag epoch. In combination with the RSD measurement, at $z_{\rm eff} = 0.85$ we find $f\sigma_8(z_{\rm eff}) = 0.289_{-0.096}^{+0.085}$, with $f$ the growth rate of structure and $\sigma_8$ the normalisation of the linear power spectrum, $D_{\rm H}(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 20.0_{-2.2}^{+2.4}$ and $D_{\rm M}(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 19.17 \pm 0.99$ with $D_{\rm H}$ and $D_{\rm M}$ the Hubble and comoving angular distances, respectively. These results are in agreement with those obtained in configuration space, thus allowing a consensus measurement of $f\sigma_8(z_{\rm eff}) = 0.315 \pm 0.095$, $D_{\rm H}(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 19.6_{-2.1}^{+2.2}$ and $D_{\rm M}(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 19.5 \pm 1.0$. We analyse the clustering of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 16 luminous red galaxy sample (DR16 eBOSS LRG) in combination with the high redshift tail of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 (DR12 BOSS CMASS). We measure the redshift space distortions (RSD) and also extract the longitudinal and transverse baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale from the anisotropic power spectrum signal inferred from 377,458 galaxies between redshifts 0.6 and 1.0, with effective redshift of $z_{\rm eff}=0.698$ and effective comoving volume of $2.72\,{\rm Gpc}^3$. After applying reconstruction we measure the BAO scale and infer $D_H(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 19.30\pm 0.56$ and $D_M(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} =17.86 \pm 0.37$. When we perform a redshift space distortions analysis on the pre-reconstructed catalogue on the monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole we find, $D_H(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 20.18\pm 0.78$, $D_M(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} =17.49 \pm 0.52$ and $f\sigma_8(z_{\rm eff})=0.454\pm0.046$. We combine both sets of results along with the measurements in configuration space of \cite{LRG_corr} and report the following consensus values: $D_H(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 19.77\pm 0.47$, $D_M(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 17.65\pm 0.30$ and $f\sigma_8(z_{\rm eff})=0.473\pm 0.044$, which are in full agreement with the standard $\Lambda$CDM and GR predictions. We present the Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) sample of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Data Release 16 (DR16). After describing the observations and redshift measurement for the 269,243 observed ELG spectra over 1170 deg$^2$, we present the large-scale structure catalogues, which are used for the cosmological analysis. These catalogues contain 173,736 reliable spectroscopic redshifts between 0.6 and 1.1, along with the associated random catalogues quantifying the extent of observations, and the appropriate weights to correct for non-cosmological fluctuations. We perform a spherically averaged baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurement in configuration space, with density field reconstruction: the data 2-point correlation function shows a feature consistent with that of the BAO, providing a 3.2-percent measurement of the spherically averaged BAO distance $D_V(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 18.23\pm 0.58$ at the effective redshift $z_{\rm eff}=0.845$., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. We develop an estimator to extract the mean radial velocity profile of cosmic voids via the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect of pairs of galaxies surrounding them. The estimator is tested with simulated pure kSZ map and void catalogue data from the same simulation. The results show that the recovered signal could be attenuated by low angular resolution of the map or large aperture photometry filter radius size, but the mean radial velocity profile can be fully recovered with our estimator. By applying the estimator to the Planck 2D-ILC CMB map, with galaxy and void catalogues from BOSS DR12, we find that the estimated void velocity profile is $3.31\sigma$ apart from null detection for for voids with continuously rising density profiles asymptoting to the mean density; and $1.75\sigma$ for voids with positive density contrast shell surrounded. By fitting the reconstructed data to the theoretical profile, we find the reduced $\chi^{2}$ to be $1.19$ and $0.62$ for the two types of void, respectively, indicating a good fit of the model to the data. We then forecast the detectability of the radial velocity profile of cosmic voids with future CMB surveys, including SPT-3G, AdvACT, and Simons Observatory. We find that the contamination effect from CMB residuals is negligible with survey area over $2,000~{\rm deg}^2$, especially with aperture photometry size less than $1\,{\rm arcmin}$. But the effect from instrumental noise is non-negligible. For future SPT-3G, AdvACT and Simons Observatory, the detection is potentially achievable from $3\sigma$ to $10\sigma$ C.L., depending on specific instrumental parameters. This opens a new window of probing dynamics of the cosmic structures from the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect.

We examine the cosmological implications of measurements of the void-galaxy cross-correlation at redshift $z=0.57$ combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data at $0.110\sigma$ significance from these data alone, independent of the cosmic microwave background and supernovae. Using a nucleosynthesis prior on $\Omega_bh^2$, we measure the Hubble constant to be $H_0=72.3\pm1.9\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ from BAO+voids at $z<2$, and $H_0=69.0\pm1.2\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ when adding Lyman-$\alpha$ BAO at $z=2.34$, both independent of the CMB. Adding voids to CMB, BAO and supernova data greatly improves measurement of the dark energy equation of state, increasing the figure of merit by >40%, but remaining consistent with flat flat $\Lambda$ cold dark matter., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We report a $5.3\sigma$ detection of the gravitational lensing effect of cosmic voids from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic (BOSS) Data Release 12 seen in the $Planck$ 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence map. To make this detection, we introduce new optimal techniques for void stacking and filtering of the CMB maps, such as binning voids by a combination of their observed galaxy density and size to separate those with distinctive lensing signatures. We calibrate theoretical expectations for the void-lensing signal using mock catalogs generated in a suite of 108 full-sky lensing simulations from Takahashi et al. (2017). Relative to these templates, we measure the lensing amplitude parameter in the data to be $A_L=1.10 \pm 0.21$ using a matched-filter stacking technique, and confirm it using an alternative Wiener filtering method. We demonstrate that the result is robust against thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich contamination and other sources of systematics. We use the lensing measurements to test the relationship between the matter and galaxy distributions within voids, and show that the assumption of linear bias with a value consistent with galaxy clustering results is discrepant with observation at $\sim 3\sigma$; we explain why such a result is consistent with simulations and previous results, and is expected as a consequence of void selection effects. We forecast the potential for void-CMB lensing measurements in future data from the Advanced ACT, Simons Observatory and CMB-S4 experiments, showing that, for the same number of voids, the achievable precision improves by a factor of more than two compared to $Planck$., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; addressed minor comments from the reviewer; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present catalogues of cosmic voids identified in the distribution of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) and Quasi Stellar Objects (QSOs) in the fourteenth data release (DR14) of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). We perform a multivariate analysis to assess the level of contamination in these catalogues by spurious Poisson underdensities. We find that the LRG void catalogue is largely free from contamination but that the QSO catalogue may be heavily contaminated. We analyse the multipoles of the void-galaxy cross-correlation function in these catalogues to obtain constraints on the growth rate of structure around voids. We find a value of $\beta(z=0.703)=0.58^{+0.33}_{-0.28}$ for the LRG voids and $\beta(z=1.53)=0.15^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$ for the QSO voids., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, prepared for submission to JCAP

We revisit a cosmological constraint on dark matter decaying into dark radiation at late times. In Enqvist et al. (2015), we mainly focused on the effects of decaying dark matter (DDM) on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and nonlinear matter power spectrum. Extending our previous analysis, here we use N-body simulation to investigate how DDM affects the halo mass function. This allows us to incorporate the cluster counts observed by the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect to study a bound on the lifetime of DDM. We also update the data of CMB and cosmic shear power spectrum with the Planck 2015 results and KiDS450 observations, respectively. From these cosmological observations, we obtain an lower bound on the lifetime $\Gamma^{-1}\ge 175\,$Gyr from the Planck2015 results (CMB+SZ cluster count) combined with the KiDS450 and the recent measurements of the baryon acoustic scale., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We present a measurement of the anisotropic void-galaxy cross-correlation function in the CMASS galaxy sample of the BOSS DR12 data release. We perform a joint fit to the data for redshift space distortions (RSD) due to galaxy peculiar velocities and anisotropies due to the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect, for the first time using a velocity field reconstruction technique to remove the complicating effects of RSD in the void centre positions themselves. Fits to the void-galaxy function give a 1% measurement of the AP parameter combination $D_A(z)H(z)/c = 0.4367\pm 0.0045$ at redshift $z=0.57$, where $D_A$ is the angular diameter distance and $H$ the Hubble parameter, exceeding the precision obtainable from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) by a factor of ~3.5 and free of systematic errors. From voids alone we also obtain a 10% measure of the growth rate, $f\sigma_8(z=0.57)=0.501\pm0.051$. The parameter degeneracies are orthogonal to those obtained from galaxy clustering. Combining void information with that from BAO and galaxy RSD in the same CMASS sample, we measure $D_A(0.57)/r_s=9.383\pm 0.077$ (at 0.8% precision), $H(0.57)r_s=(14.05\pm 0.14)\;10^3$ kms$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$ (1%) and $f\sigma_8=0.453\pm0.022$ (4.9%), consistent with cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements from Planck. These represent a factor \sim2 improvement in precision over previous results through the inclusion of void information. Fitting a flat cosmological constant $\Lambda$CDM model to these results in combination with Planck CMB data, we find up to an 11% reduction in uncertainties on $H_0$ and $\Omega_m$ compared to use of the corresponding BOSS consensus values. Constraints on extended models with non-flat geometry and a dark energy of state that differs from $w=-1$ show an even greater improvement., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures. Redshift space distortions (RSD) in the void-galaxy correlation $\xi^s$ provide information on the linear growth rate of structure in low density environments. Accurate modelling of these RSD effects can also allow the use of voids in competitive Alcock-Paczynski measurements. Linear theory models of $\xi^s$ are able to provide extremely good descriptions of simulation data on all scales provided the real space void positions are known. However, by reference to simulation data we demonstrate the failure of the assumptions implicit in current models of $\xi^s$ for voids identified directly in redshift space, as would be simplest using real observational data. To overcome this problem we instead propose using a density-field reconstruction method based on the Zeldovich approximation to recover the real space void positions from redshift space data. We show that this recovers the excellent agreement between theory and data for $\xi^s$. Performing the reconstruction requires an input cosmological model so, to be self-consistent, we have to perform reconstruction for every model to be tested. We apply this method to mock galaxy and void catalogues in the Big MultiDark $N$-body simulation and consistently recover the fiducial growth rate to a precision of $3.4\%$ using the simulation volume of $(2.5\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc})^3$., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, including 1 appendix. Redshift space distortions within voids provide a unique method to test for environmental dependence of the growth rate of structures in low density regions, where effects of modified gravity theories might be important. We derive a linear theory model for the redshift space void-galaxy correlation that is valid at all pair separations, including deep within the void, and use this to obtain expressions for the monopole $\xi^s_0$ and quadrupole $\xi^s_2$ contributions. Our derivation highlights terms that have previously been neglected but are important within the void interior. As a result our model differs from previous works and predicts new physical effects, including a change in the sign of the quadrupole term within the void radius. We show how the model can be generalised to include a velocity dispersion. We compare our model predictions to measurements of the correlation function using mock void and galaxy catalogues modelled after the BOSS CMASS galaxy sample using the Big MultiDark $N$-body simulation, and show that the linear model with dispersion provides an excellent fit to the data at all scales, $0\leq s\leq120\;h^{-1}$Mpc. While the RSD model matches simulations, the linear bias approximation does not hold within voids, and care is needed in fitting for the growth rate. We show that fits to the redshift space correlation recover the growth rate $f(z=0.52)$ to a precision of $2.7\%$ using the simulation volume of $(2.5\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc})^3$., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. v3: updated to match version published in MNRAS. The properties of large underdensities in the distribution of galaxies in the Universe, known as cosmic voids, are potentially sensitive probes of fundamental physics. We use data from the MultiDark suite of N-body simulations and multiple halo occupation distribution mocks to study the relationship between galaxy voids, identified using a watershed void-finding algorithm, and the gravitational potential $\Phi$. We find that the majority of galaxy voids correspond to local density minima in larger-scale overdensities, and thus lie in potential wells. However, a subset of voids can be identified that closely trace maxima of the gravitational potential and thus stationary points of the velocity field. We identify a new void observable, $\lambda_v$, which depends on a combination of the void size and the average galaxy density contrast within the void, and show that it provides a good proxy indicator of the potential at the void location. A simple linear scaling of $\Phi$ as a function of $\lambda_v$ is found to hold, independent of the redshift and properties of the galaxies used as tracers of voids. We provide an accurate fitting formula to describe the spherically averaged potential profile $\Phi(r)$ about void centre locations. We discuss the importance of these results for the understanding of the evolution history of voids, and for their use in precision measurements of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, gravitational lensing and peculiar velocity distortions in redshift space., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. We present a new method for detection of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) imprints of cosmic superstructures on the cosmic microwave background, based on a matched filtering approach. The expected signal-to-noise ratio for this method is comparable to that obtained from the full cross-correlation, and unlike other stacked filtering techniques it is not subject to an a posteriori bias. We apply this method to Planck CMB data using voids and superclusters identified in the CMASS galaxy data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, and measure the ISW amplitude to be $A_\mathrm{ISW}=1.64\pm0.53$ relative to the $\Lambda$CDM expectation, corresponding to a $3.1\sigma$ detection. We present a public catalogue of voids in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 11 LOWZ and CMASS galaxy surveys. This catalogue contains information on the location, sizes, densities, shapes and bounding surfaces of 8956 independent, disjoint voids, making it the largest public void catalogue to date. Voids are identified using a version of the ZOBOV algorithm, the operation of which has been calibrated through tests on mock galaxy populations in N-body simulations, as well as on a suite of 4096 mock catalogues which fully reproduce the galaxy clustering, survey masks and selection functions. Based on this, we estimate a false positive detection rate of 3%. Comparison with mock catalogues limits deviations of the void size distribution from that predicted in the $\Lambda$CDM model to be less than 6% for voids with effective radius $8

Despite its continued observational successes, there is a persistent (and growing) interest in extending cosmology beyond the standard model, $\Lambda$CDM. This is motivated by a range of apparently serious theoretical issues, involving such questions as the cosmological constant problem, the particle nature of dark matter, the validity of general relativity on large scales, the existence of anomalies in the CMB and on small scales, and the predictivity and testability of the inflationary paradigm. In this paper, we summarize the current status of $\Lambda$CDM as a physical theory, and review investigations into possible alternatives along a number of different lines, with a particular focus on highlighting the most promising directions. We study how the properties of cosmic voids depend on those of the tracer galaxy populations in which they are identified. We use a suite of halo occupation distribution (HOD) mocks in a simulation, identify voids in these populations using the ZOBOV void finder and measure their abundances, sizes, tracer densities, and dark matter content. To separate the effects of bias from those of sampling density, we do the same for voids traced by randomly down-sampled subsets of the simulation dark matter particles. At the same sampling density, galaxy bias reduces the total number of voids by ~50% and can dramatically change their size distribution. The matter content of voids in biased and unbiased tracers also differs. Deducing void properties from simulation therefore requires the use of realistic galaxy mocks. We discuss how the void observables can be related to their matter content. In particular we consider the compensation of the total mass deficit in voids and find that the distinction between over- and under-compensated voids is not a function of void size alone, as has previously been suggested. However, we find a simple linear relationship between the average density of tracers in the void and the total mass compensation on much larger scales. The existence of this linear relationship holds independent of the bias and sampling density of the tracers. We consider decaying dark matter (DDM) as a resolution to the possible tension between cosmic microwave background (CMB) and weak lensing (WL) based determinations of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, $\sigma_8$. We perform N-body simulations in a model where dark matter decays into dark radiation and develop an accurate fitting formula for the non-linear matter power spectrum, which enables us to test the DDM model by the combined measurements of CMB, WL and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO). We employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis to examine the overlap of posterior distributions of the cosmological parameters, comparing CMB alone with WL+BAO. We find an overlap that is significantly larger in the DDM model than in the standard CDM model. This may be hinting at DDM, although current data is not constraining enough to unambiguously favour a non-zero dark matter decay rate $\Gamma$. From the combined CMB+WL data, we obtain a lower bound $\Gamma^{-1}\ge 97$ Gyr at 95 % C.L, which is less tight than the constraint from CMB alone., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in JCAP

The statistical study of voids in the matter distribution promises to be an important tool for precision cosmology, but there are known discrepancies between theoretical models of voids and the voids actually found in large simulations or galaxy surveys. The empirical properties of observed voids are also not well understood. In this paper, we study voids in an N-body simulation, using the ZOBOV watershed algorithm. As in other studies, we use sets of subsampled dark matter particles as tracers to identify voids, but we use the full-resolution simulation output to measure dark matter densities at the identified locations. Voids span a wide range of sizes and densities, but there is a clear trend towards larger voids containing deeper density minima, a trend which is expected for all watershed void finders. We also find that the tracer density at void locations is usually smaller than the true density, and that this relationship depends on the sampling density of tracers. We show that fits given in the literature fail to match the observed density profiles of voids. The average enclosed density contrast within watershed voids varies widely with both the size of the void and the minimum density within it, but is always far from the shell crossing threshold expected from theoretical models. Voids with deeper density minima also show much broader density profiles. The discovery of a void of size $\sim200\;h^{-1}$Mpc and average density contrast of $\sim-0.1$ aligned with the Cold Spot direction has been recently reported. It has been argued that, although the first-order integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect of such a void on the CMB is small, the second-order Rees-Sciama (RS) contribution exceeds this by an order of magnitude and can entirely explain the observed Cold Spot temperature profile. In this paper we examine this surprising claim using both an exact calculation with the spherically symmetric Lema\^itre-Tolman-Bondi metric, and perturbation theory about a background Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric. We show that both approaches agree well with each other, and both show that the dominant temperature contribution of the postulated void is an unobservable dipole anisotropy. If this dipole is subtracted, we find that the remaining temperature anisotropy is dominated by the linear ISW signal, which is orders of magnitude larger than the second-order RS effect, and that the total magnitude is too small to explain the observed Cold Spot profile. We calculate the density and size of a void that would be required to explain the Cold Spot, and show that the probability of existence of such a void is essentially zero in $\Lambda$CDM. We identify the importance of \emph{a posteriori} selection effects in the identification of the Cold Spot, but argue that even after accounting for them, a supervoid explanation of the Cold Spot is always disfavoured relative to a random statistical fluctuation on the last scattering surface., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. The study of the interesting cosmological properties of voids in the Universe depends on the efficient and robust identification of such voids in galaxy redshift surveys. Recently, Sutter et al. (2012) have published a public catalogue of voids in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 main galaxy and luminous red galaxy samples, using the void-finding algorithm ZOBOV, which is based on the watershed transform. We examine the properties of this catalogue and show that it suffers from several problems and inconsistencies, including the identification of some extremely overdense regions as voids. As a result, cosmological results obtained using this catalogue need to be reconsidered. We provide instead an alternative, self-consistent, public catalogue of voids in the same galaxy data, obtained from using an improved version of the same watershed transform algorithm. We provide a more robust method of dealing with survey boundaries and masks, as well as with a radially varying selection function, which means that our method can be applied to any other survey. We discuss some basic properties of the voids thus discovered, and describe how further information may be obtained from the catalogue. In addition, we apply an inversion of the algorithm to the same data to obtain a corresponding catalogue of large-scale overdense structures, or "superclusters".
