The propagation and distribution of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre), clonal selections in Uganda has been hampered by logistics. These clonal selections also exhibit a substantial degree of genotype-environmental interaction. Our objectives were to further elucidate the differences between these clones, the differences between individual clones and their corresponding seedling progenies and a farmer's elite entry and to define the nitrogen levels required for the optimal performance of the various clones and seedling progenies. A split-split plot, randomized complete block design with 4 replicates was used. Mean yield data for the years 1988 and 1989 are presented. There were significant differences in the response to nitrogen but a complete response curve was not established. Nevertheless, the data confirmed that it is highly profitable to apply nitrogen to robusta coffee. The differences between the yields of clonal cuttings and their corresponding seedling progenies were much higher for the erecta types of robusta coffee than for the nganda type. The nganda clones had a higher level of general combining ability than the erecta types. The correlations between the clonal parents and their corresponding seedling progenies were low for all entries but slightly higher for the nganda than for the erecta entries. Using clonal cuttings resulted in higher yields for the erecta entries compared to their corresponding seedling progenies. Grain soybean (Glycine max L.) is the primary source of vegetable protein for food and feed supplements, and accounts for much of the world’s oil supply. In most parts of Africa, soybean production potential is yet to be realised largely due to lack of improved varieties. Uganda’s soybean breeding programme has been actively involved in developing varieties to meet the needs of farmers in different parts of the country. This study was, conducted to determine the adaptation of new advanced generation soybean lines to identify high yielding stable lines, the most ideal testing environment and to determine the presence of soybean production mega environments in the country. Twenty one advanced generation soybean lines and three standard check varieties were evaluated in five sites and three consecutive rainy seasons. Results of AMMI analysis indicated the presence of a scale genotype-by-environment interaction for soybean grain yield. Through AMMI estimates and GGE visual assessment, BSPS48A was the highest yielding genotype in the most discriminating and stable environment, Nakabango. BSPS48A was, therefore, recommended for release subject to evaluation for commercial value. From the environmental focusing plot, the five multi-locations tested were grouped into two putative mega environments for soybean production.Key Words: AMMI, genotype, GGE, Glycine maxLe grain de soja (Glycine max L.) est une importante source de protéine végétale comme supplément alimentaire, l’alimentation du bétail et produit une grande partie d’huile fournie au monde. Dans plusieurs contrées d’Afrique, la production potentielle du soja est pourtant affectée par le manque des variétés améliorées. Le programme ugandais d’amélioration du soja a été activement impliqué dans le développement des variétés afin de répondre aux besoins des fermiers de différentes parties du pays. Cette étude était conduite dans le but de déterminer l’adaptation des nouvelles lignées de générations avancées du soja pour identifier des lignées stables à haut rendement, l’environnement le plus idéal pour ce test et, déterminer la présence des méga environnement dans le pays. Vingt et une lignées de générations avancées de soja et trois variétés témoins étaient évaluées dans cinq sites en trois saisons consécutives de pluie. Les résultats d’analyse AMMI ont indiqué la présence d’une échelle d’interaction génotype-environnement pour le rendement en grain du soja. A travers AMMI estimé et l’évaluation visuelle de GGE, BSPS48A était le génotype à rendement le plus élevé dans laplupart d’environnement jugés stables, Nakabango. BSPS48A était, de ce fait récommendé pour une évaluation de la valeur commercial. Basé sur les différents environnements, les cinq multi-localisations testées étaient groupées en deux méga environnements reconnus pour la production du soja.Mots Clés: AMMI, génotype, GGE, Glycine max

Received 25 May 2001; accepted 20 May, 2002) ABSTRACT Pod shattering in soybean is a major production constraint causing high field yield losses in the tropic and sub tropics. With regard to pod shattering, soybean varieties can be categorised as tolerant, intermediate or susceptible. Six soybean lines, Nam 2, TGx 1448-2E, Duiker, Nam 1, TGm 737P and Kabanyolo 1 were grown at three locations for three seasons (1997 - 1998) to determine field seed yield losses due to pod shattering and the effect of G X E interactions on shattering. Based on the number of shattered and unshattered pods, the amount of soybean seed yield lost in the field due to pod shattering was determined. Yield losses in susceptible and intermediate susceptible varieties ranged from 57 - 175 kg ha -1 and 0 - 186 kg ha-1, respectively depending on genotype, location, season and harvesting date. The resistant varieties did not shatter even when harvested after a delayed harvesting period of 21 days. Field yield loss due to pod shattering was estimated and such estimates are considered useful for breeding programmes when selecting varieties for resistance to shattering. Concernant l'éclatement de gousses, les variétés de soja peuvent être classées comme tolérantes, intermédiares ou susceptibles. Six lignées de soja, Nam2, TGx 1448-2E, Duiker, Nam1, TGm 737 P et Kabanyolo 1 étaient plantées en trois endroits et pour trois saisons (1997-1998) pour déterminer les pertes en graines dans les champs causées par l'éclatement de gousses et les effets de l'intéraction GxE sur l'éclatement. Se basant sur le nombre de gousses éclatées et non-éclatées, la quantité de soja perdue dans les champs par éclatement était déterminée. Les pertes de rendements pour les variétés susceptibles et intermédiaires rangées entre 57 et 175 kg ha-1 et 0 et 186 kg ha-1, respectivement ; selon le génotype, la location, la saison et la date de la moisson. Les variétés résistantes n'ont pas éclaté même quand elles étaient récoltées avec 21 jours de retard. La perte en champs due à l'éclatement de gousses était estimée et ces estimations sont considérées très utiles dans les programmes de transformations quand les variétés résistantes à l'éclatement sont sélectionnées.
