In spite of okra's importance to food security in developing countries, its production is limited by low soil nutrient and health status. A screenhouse study examined soil chemical properties, okra growth and yield under complementary application of biochar, organic and inorganic fertilizer in an Ultisol. The treatments comprised 5 kg soil each amended with 5 t biochar ha−1, 5 t poultry manure compost (SPM) ha−1, urea at 56 kg N ha−1, urea (28 kg N ha−1) + 5 t biochar ha−1, 5 t ha−1 (2:1, PM: biochar) (SPMB), urea (28 kg N ha−1) + 5 t ha−1 (2:1, PM: biochar) (SPMBF2). The treatments, replicated thrice, were arranged in a completely randomized design. There were two sets of plants terminated at 50% flowering (dry matter yield (DMY) and nutrient uptake) and at 10 wk post-planting for growth and yield determination. Results revealed that soil chemical properties, okra growth and yield increased responsively to the organic amendments. The SPM, followed by SPMB and SPMBF, enhanced soil pH (0.18–0.19 unit), total N (79–100%), organic carbon (75–100%), available P (55–58%) and exchangeable cations over the control and others (p < 0.05). These treatments also increased the plant's agronomic parameters: plant height (10–19%), number of leaves, leave area (21–31%), stem girth (33–51%), DMY (59–67%), and tissue Ca, Mg and K. The SPMBF2 – treated soil had the highest fruit yield (45 g pot−1). BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Vegetal‐derived protein hydrolysates (PHs) have been recognized as sustainable biostimulant products due to their beneficial effects on crops. However, most studies on PHs have been conducted at a fixed ratio of nitrate‐to‐ammonium (NO3−:NH4+) without considering other N application scenarios, leading to inconsistent results among the studies. This study compared the influences of N levels (2 or 10 mM N), NO3:NH4 ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, or 25:75), and PH application methods – control, foliar spray (PH‐F) or root application (PH‐R) – on the yield, morphology, nutrients, and nutraceutical quality of hydroponic lettuce.Nitrogen level, NO3:NH4 ratio, and PH application affected plant growth, morphology, and quality significantly, highlighting the importance of the interactions among these factors. Shoot growth was influenced by NO3:NH4 ratios, PH, and their interactions. Similar trends were observed in chlorophyll content. The interactions among all three factors significantly influenced root growth and morphology. Root application (PH‐R) protected lettuce from yield loss caused by low NO3:NH4 ratios and from reduced antioxidant compounds caused by high N levels. Vegetal‐derived protein hydrolysates improved nutrient uptake through two‐way and three‐way interactions although neither PH nor any interactions affected nitrate concentrations.This study demonstrated that PH interacts with N level and NO3:NH4 ratio, affecting hydroponic lettuce yield and quality. Tumours often display invasive behaviours that induce fingering, branching and fragmentation processes. The phenomenon, known as diffusional instability, is driven by differential cell proliferation, migration, and death due to the presence of metabolite and catabolite concentration gradients. An understanding of the intricate dynamics of this spatially heterogeneous process plays a key role in the investigation of tumour growth and invasion. In this study, we developed an in vitro tumour invasion assay to investigate cell invasiveness in tumour spheroids under a chemotactic stimulus. Our method, employing tumour spheroids seeded in a 3D collagen gel within a microfluidic chemotaxis chamber, focuses on the role of diffusive gradients. Using Time-Lapse Microscopy, the dynamic evolution of tumour spheroids was monitored in real-time, providing a comprehensive view of the morphological changes and cell migration patterns under different chemotactic conditions. Specifically, we explored the impact of fetal bovine serum (FBS) gradients on the behaviour of CT26 mouse colon carcinoma cells and compared the effects of varying FBS concentrations to two isotropic control conditions. Furthermore, a finite element in silico model was developed to quantify the diffusive flow of nutrients in the chemotaxis chamber and obtain a detailed understanding of tumour dynamics. Our findings reveal that the presence of a chemotactic gradient significantly influences tumour invasiveness, with higher concentrations of nutrients associated with increased cancer growth and cell migration. AbstractEmploying nanoscale materials as fertilizers through foliar applications in agriculture has been on the rise and is one of the effective methods for sustainable agriculture. Herein, we investigated the effects of foliar sprays of varied concentrations (@ 100, 200,400, 600, 800, and 1000 ppm) of nanoscale silica on the productivity of rice (field scale) during two rabi seasons (2021–22 and 2022–23). The modified Stober method was used to prepare SiNPs and characterized using particle size analyzer and transmission electron microscopy. The recorded average size of SiNPs was 28.8 nm, with a positive zeta potential (24.6 mV). Pooled results revealed that RDF + foliar spray of SiNPs at 200 ppm increased the culm diameter of rice by 13.6 and 14.3 per cent over silicic acid (@ 4000 ppm) and RDF, respectively. Grain yield (5905 kg ha−1) and straw yield (7517 kg ha−1) were increased by 45.53 and 45.73 per cent over silicic acid (4058 kg ha−1 of grain yield; 5158 kg ha−1 of straw yield) treatments, respectively. Foliar application of SiNPs @ 200 ppm along with RDF significantly increased the protein content of grain (8.82%) and recorded higher net returns of 88506.15 ha−1 with benefit-cost ratio of 2.68 over other treatments tested. In the present study a library of five (2‐(amino)‐1,3‐thiazin‐6‐one) compounds was synthesized and investigated as against glioblastoma cells in vitro and in vivo in the mice model. The results revealed that all of the five 1,3‐thiazin‐6‐one compounds (4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and 4e) exhibited cytotoxicity against U87MG and 9 L brain cancer cell lines. Moreover, it was found that 9 L cells showed slightly higher sensitivity towards the compounds 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and 4e compared to U87MG cells. It was observed that the compounds 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and 4e showed a time‐dependent increase in uptake efficiency by U87MG and 9 L cells. Furthermore, the data revealed that uptake of the compounds and therefore internalization was maximum during initial 1 h of the treatment. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 4c containing trifluoromethyl moiety showed higher uptake efficiency compared to the compound 4a, 4b, 4d and 4e. Treatment of U87MG and 9 L cell tumor spheroids with compound 4c significantly (P<0.05) inhibited the tumor growth compared to the control spheroids. In vivo data revealed that treatment with compound 4c led to a significant (P<0.05) decrease in glioblastoma growth in mice in dose‐dependent manner. Growth of glioblastoma in mice was almost completely inhibited after 28 days of treatment with 2 mg/kg dose of compound 4c. Pharmacokinetic studies showed that compound 4c remained in circulation for longer duration in mice and its terminal half‐life was found to be 6.5 h. Treatment of U87MG and 9 L cells with compound 4c led to a prominent decrease in expression of CYR61 protein. In conclusion, findings of the present study suggest that compound 4c acts as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of advanced brain cancer through activation of Hippo pathway. Maize, being a nutritious and multipurpose crop requires proper nutrition (N, P, and K) and standardization of sowing time to enhance productivity and profitability under changing climate scenario. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted during monsoon season of 2021 and 2022 at agricultural farm, Lovely Professional University, Punjab, in split plot design with four fertilizer levels (125, 100, 75, and 50% recommended dose of fertilizers; RDF) in main plots and four sowing dates (15 and 30 of June and July) in subplots, replicated thrice. Maize sown on 30 June and fertilized with 125% RDF ensured higher growth attributes throughout crop growth. Besides, comparatively greater yield attributes as well as grain yield (8.22 t ha−1), stover yield (11.86 t ha−1), and harvest index (40.9%) were observed from that treatment combination, and it also recorded higher quality protein and nutrient uptakes but less residual soil fertility. Maize grown on 30 July under application of 50% RDF was the poorest yielder. Further, production economics and energy analysis showed similar trend and indicated that maize grown on 30 June under application of 125% RDF recorded maximum gross return (₹168275 ha−1), net return (₹109565 ha−1), and benefit-cost ratio (2.87) as well as energy output (269084 MJ ha−1) and net energy gain (250750.3 MJ ha−1). The survival and productivity of potato plantlets transplanted from in vitro to commercial hydroponic minituber culture are crucial. Mycorrhizal fungi are an efficient tool to enhance potato nutrient uptake, survival, and productivity under these conditions. This study aimed to assess the effect of mycorrhizal fungi on improving the yield of minitubers and nutrient uptake in potatoes transferred from the in vitro environment to the greenhouse. This study was conducted in a greenhouse in Hamadan province, I.R. Iran, in 2013. The experimental design was factorial, including treatments with and without inoculation with the mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis and varying phosphorus (P) concentrations in Hoagland's solution (100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of its maximum content, i.e. 0.965, 0.482, 0.241, and 0.12 mM H2PO4-) with three replications on potato plantlets transferred from in vitro to pots. The results indicated that the highest colonization percentage was achieved with 25% P and inoculation. The highest number of minitubers (8.9), total minituber weight per plant (53.2 grams), plant height (54.6 cm), minituber (0.38%) and leaf (0.363%) P content, minituber (33 mg/kg) and leaf (65 mg/kg) manganese (Mn) content, and minituber (38 mg/kg) and leaf (65 mg/kg) zinc (Zn) content were obtained with inoculation and 75% P of Hoagland nutrient solution, which was statistically comparable to the inoculation with 100% P treatment. In summary, inoculating potato plantlets with mycorrhiza can enhance minituber yield and nutrient uptake and potentially replace approximately 50% of the P requirement in hydroponic solutions. Finding methods, which may alleviate drought stress on the growth and biochemical properties of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), as one of the important medicinal plants, is of significance. The objective was to alleviate drought stress on seed germination, seedling growth, and biochemical properties of different genotypes of safflower using 24-epibrassinosteroid (EBR). The experiments, conducted in the greenhouse in 2014 and 2015, were factorial on the basis of a complete randomized block design with three replicates. Drought stress (85 (S1), 65 (S2) and 45% (S3) of field capacity), genotype (Goldasht, Faraman and Sina), and the foliar application of 24-epibrassinosteroid (EBR) (0 and 10−7 M) were tested. Seed germination indices, seedling growth and biochemical properties were determined. The results indicated the significant effects of drought stress on the measured parameters including seed germination, which was the most sensitive stage. The use of EBR significantly increased seed germination and seedling growth, nutrient uptake and grain protein and oil contents, at different levels of stress. EBR significantly enhanced grain N (7.3%) and P (0.5%) uptake, as well as protein percentage (38.7%), even at the highest level of stress (S3), to the levels which were comparable with S1 and S2. The use of EBR may improve seed germination and the growth of safflower seedlings under drought stress conditions by affecting the physiological properties, mainly related to the mechanisms of protein production. Raspberry ketone (RK) is a high-value bioactive component in the growing demand for natural compounds in food and flavour industries. However, limited production persists due to low-yield microorganisms and complex biosynthetic pathway. Here, an Nidula niveo-tomentosa fungi-based fermentation system was developed to investigate and optimize the cultivation parameters for natural RK production. While optimizing glucose and phenylalanine concentrations ensured sufficient substrate supply, it unexpectedly induced stress on the substrates. Despite having minimal impact on biomass growth, UV-A radiation effectively boosted RK biosynthesis, but also reaching a ceiling with extended exposure times. Younger precultures exhibited higher specific productivity, older cultures ultimately yielded more RK due to their higher inoculum concentration. Mycelial fungi, compared to fungal pellets, outperformed in RK production, likely facilitated by enhanced nutrient uptake and bioproduct transport. Ultimately, the combination of optimized parameters unlocked a peak RK yield of 154.4 mg/L, underscoring the remarkable potential for natural RK production. Phosphorus (P) is crucial for plant functions like root growth, energy transfer, photosynthesis, and cell division. Yet, its soil efficiency is hindered by high fixation, low solubility, and immobility. Besides, its increased availability and subsequent plant uptake requires availability of sufficient moisture, as increased soil moisture contents higher dissolution of P occurs leading to increased root development, which, ultimately, increase nutrient uptake by plants. We performed a field experiment to check the effect of different P application levels along with different irrigation schemes in improving P uptake efficiency of maize and its related growth and yield attributes. In different treatments, irrigation was provided at recommended levels, skipped at milking and flowering stages to check the impacts of moisture contents on soil P availability. We observed that among different P levels, application of P at 90 kg ha-1 along with recommended irrigation level enhanced different maize traits, such as shoot length (13.4%), root length (51%), shoot fresh and dry weights (35 and 25%), root fresh and dry weights (37 and 42%), SPAD value (17%), chlorophyll 'a and b' (16 and 7%), P use efficiency (255%), harvest index (43%) and carotenoid contents (26%), as compared to control followed by P at 120 kg ha-1. Furthermore, in terms of soil nutrient attributes, P at 90 kg ha-1 along with recommended irrigation level enhanced soil organic matter (17%), active carbon (22%), available P (122%) and extractable potassium (36%), as compared to control. A consecutive decline in all the measured attributes was pragmatic under skipped irrigation systems under all the P application levels. We concluded that P application at 90 kg ha-1 combined with recommended irrigation levels can significantly increase P use efficiency of maize along with increased soil P availability and related growth and yield attributes. Plasma membrane H+-ATPases (PMAs) provide an H+ electrochemical gradient to establish a proton motive force and membrane potential for the transport of various nutrients across the plasma membrane. PMAs are regulated at multiple levels, and genetic modulation of PMA expression could enhance nutrient acquisition and use efficiency in plants. PMAs are involved in the coordination of the uptake and assimilation of both nitrate and ammonium. PMAs are involved in nutrient utilization by regulating root growth, facilitating organic anion exudation, and promoting the acquisition of nutrients through H+ extrusion-mediated apoplast and rhizosphere acidification. PMAs play essential roles in mycorrhizal symbioses in plant roots for nutrient acquisition. Plasma membrane H+-ATPases (PMAs) pump H+ out of the cytoplasm by consuming ATP to generate a membrane potential and proton motive force for the transmembrane transport of nutrients into and out of plant cells. PMAs are involved in nutrient acquisition by regulating root growth, nutrient uptake, and translocation, as well as the establishment of symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizas. Under nutrient stresses, PMAs are activated to pump more H+ and promote organic anion excretion, thus improving nutrient availability in the rhizosphere. Herein we review recent progress in the physiological functions and the underlying molecular mechanisms of PMAs in the efficient acquisition and utilization of various nutrients in plants. Prairie cropping systems face several challenges, including high input costs and climate change. Research to address these challenges has focused on above-ground agronomic parameters while completely ignoring the role roots play below ground. The objectives of this review study are to (i) synthesize past root studies carried out in the Canadian Prairies, (ii) provide a context for prairie root research, and (iii) identify gaps for future research. This review reports that root architectural traits of major crops have been assessed under field and greenhouse conditions in soil, artificial media, and a mixture of both soil and media, mostly under natural/well-watered and drought conditions. Several root traits have been compared for major crops grown with respect to moisture levels and nutrient uptake. A dearth of research exists on the complex relationship between root traits, soil microbiome, nutrient uptake, carbon sequestration, and photosynthetic efficiency. No studies were found relating root traits, fertilizer placement, and nitrogen and water use efficiencies, carbon sequestration, soil microbiome dynamics, and common root diseases. This review also reports that more research and funding are needed to exploit the benefits that root research will bring to further sustainability goals and ensure food security in the Canadian Prairies. BACKGROUND: Low recovery of conventional fertilizers remains a significant bottleneck for maize production globally. In particular, with phosphate fertilization, zinc (Zn) is prone to precipitation in soil, reducing recovery of both phosphorus (P) and Zn by maize. RESULTS: The present study was designed to investigate the synergistic effect of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and P on maize crop growth, yield, and nutrient uptake under ZnO seed coating and foliar application in a randomized complete block design. However, plants were subjected to two ZnO NPs levels (0.5 and 12 kg ha−1) amended with two P levels (45 and 90 kg ha−1). ZnO NPs, especially in the form of foliar application, with a P dose of 90 Kg ha−1 significantly (P < 0.05) improved maize crop growth, yield, and nutrient uptake compared with control. In comparison with the control group, plants grown in these conditions absorbed higher levels of Zn and P. Zn uptake rose to 16.34 g ha−1, 137.88 g ha−1, and 166.89 g ha−1 in roots, grains, and stover respectively, and P uptake increased to 0.80 mg kg−1, 10.066 mg kg−1, and 12.17 mg kg−1 respectively. Additionally, seed emergence rate, plant height, and cob length increased by up to 2%, 1177 cm2, and 3.3 cm respectively compared with control. Furthermore, Zn use efficiency was increased up to 38.55% in ZnO NPs foliar application. CONCLUSIONS: Application of ZnO NPs at 0.5 kg ha−1 in the form of foliar application with 90 kg ha−1 P dose produced a more pronounced increment in the parameters studied than ZnO NPs seed coating did. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Seed crop production systems of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens L.) were assessed in two field studies for ecosystem services. At flowering stage, long duration genotype Arka Shubra was significantly superior in biomass accumulation (14.61 t ha−1), while 100% recommended NPK + 15 t FYM ha−1 registered significantly higher biomass production (11.74 t ha−1). Biomass availability at harvest was higher in long duration genotypes (7.48–7.75 t ha−1) and the average biomass availability of 6.45 t ha−1 at harvest gives scope for including velvet bean as component crop in cropping systems/fallows. The average soil carbon stocks were estimated at 22.8 t ha−1 at the end of 2 yrs and 12.4 t ha−1 at the end of one crop season. Soil nutrient availability was optimum except for soil test P in pre-, standing and post crop growth periods. Highly significant relations (R2 = 0.949) were observed between nodule number and available N at harvest. The N availability was more in long duration genotypes (209–215 kg N ha−1) over pre-experimental status. Nutrient addition improved the available N status by 40–185 kg ha−1 over pre-experimental status and control. The nutrient uptake was 4–10% higher in Arka Shubra over other long duration genotypes and 100–200% higher over medium/short duration genotypes at flowering. The recyclable biomass and uptake of NPK are more in long duration genotypes implying huge nutrient recycling potential of the system. Seagrasses are marine angiosperms that form highly productive and diverse ecosystems. These ecosystems, however, are declining worldwide. Plant-associated microbes affect critical functions like nutrient uptake and pathogen resistance, which has led to an interest in the seagrass microbiome. However, despite their significant role in plant ecology, viruses have only recently garnered attention in seagrass species. In this study, we produced original data and mined publicly available transcriptomes to advance our understanding of RNA viral diversity in Zostera marina, Zostera muelleri, Zostera japonica, and Cymodocea nodosa. In Z. marina, we present evidence for additional Zostera marina amalgavirus 1 and 2 genotypes, and a complete genome for an alphaendornavirus previously evidenced by an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene fragment. In Z. muelleri, we present evidence for a second complete alphaendornavirus and near complete furovirus. Both are novel, and, to the best of our knowledge, this marks the first report of a furovirus infection naturally occurring outside of cereal grasses. In Z. japonica, we discovered genome fragments that belong to a novel strain of cucumber mosaic virus, a prolific pathogen that depends largely on aphid vectoring for host-to-host transmission. Lastly, in C. nodosa, we discovered two contigs that belong to a novel virus in the family Betaflexiviridae. Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.); an important spice crop of the region is a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants having many health benefits. Many biotic and abiotic factors contribute towards growth and yield losses of this crop. Arsenic (As) toxicity is a global issue, but it is particularly critical in developing countries. The current study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of selenium (Se) in mitigating the toxic effects of As in two varieties (HSP-181 A and PS09979325) of Capsicum annuum L. Different concentrations of As (0, 50, and 100 µM) and Se (0, 5, and 10 µM) were tested using 14 days old seedlings of C. annuum L. The As stress caused a significant (P ≤ 0.001) reduction in growth, uptake of nutrients, and eco-physiological attributes in both varieties however, the response was specific. While the overproduction of osmo-protectants and antioxidants intensified the symptoms of oxidative stress. The maximum reduction in shoot length (45%), fresh weight (29%), and dry weight (36%) was observed in under 100 µM As stress. The organic acids exudation from the roots of both cultivars were significantly increased with the increase in As toxicity. The Se treatment significantly (p ≤ 0.001) improved growth, nutrient uptake, gas exchange attributes, antioxidant production, while decreased oxidative stress indicators, and As uptake in the roots and shoots of all the subjects under investigation. It is concluded from the results of this study that Se application increased photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant activity while decreasing As levels, organic acid exudation, and oxidative stress indicators in plants. Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands devastates forest species worldwide, causing significant ecological and economic impacts. The European chestnut (Castanea sativa) is susceptible to this hemibiotrophic oomycete, whereas the Asian chestnuts (Castanea crenata and Castanea mollissima) are resistant and have been successfully used as resistance donors in breeding programs. The molecular mechanisms underlying the different disease outcomes among chestnut species are a key foundation for developing science-based control strategies. However, these are still poorly understood. Dual RNA sequencing was performed in C. sativa and C. crenata roots inoculated with P. cinnamomi. The studied time points represent the pathogen's hemibiotrophic lifestyle previously described at the cellular level. Phytophthora cinnamomi expressed several genes related to pathogenicity in both chestnut species, such as cell wall-degrading enzymes, host nutrient uptake transporters, and effectors. However, the expression of effectors related to the modulation of host programmed cell death (elicitins and NLPs) and sporulation-related genes was higher in the susceptible chestnut. After pathogen inoculation, 1,556 and 488 genes were differentially expressed by C. crenata and C. sativa, respectively. The most significant transcriptional changes occur at 2 h after inoculation (hai) in C. sativa and 48 hai in C. crenata. Nevertheless, C. crenata induced more defense-related genes, indicating that the resistant response to P. cinnamomi is controlled by multiple loci, including several pattern recognition receptors, genes involved in the phenylpropanoid, salicylic acid and ethylene/jasmonic acid pathways, and antifungal genes. Importantly, these results validate previously observed cellular responses for C. crenata. Collectively, this study provides a comprehensive time-resolved description of the chestnut-P. cinnamomi dynamic, revealing new insights into susceptible and resistant host responses and important pathogen strategies involved in disease development. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Integrated Soil-Crop System Management (ISSM) and provide technical support for sustainable high yield and efficiency in regional agriculture. Methods: The study compared the effects of no fertilization (Control), conventional farmer practices (FP), high-yield management (HY), and ISSM on maize yield and plant nutrient uptake. Measurements included grain yield, plant biomass, plant nutrient absorption, and soil nutrient content across different management strategies. Results: Over the 12-year experimental period, a significant decline in grain yield was observed under the Control treatment, with a slight decrease in the FP treatment. In contrast, consistent yield increases were noted for the HY and ISSM treatments. The ISSM approach significantly enhanced the average yield and plant uptake of P and K by 26%, 24%, and 32%, respectively, approaching 98%, 91%, and 85% of the levels achieved in the HY treatment. Furthermore, the average use efficiency of P and K fertilizers in the ISSM treatment exceeded those in the FP treatment by 18.7% and 1.2%, respectively, and those in the HY treatment by 17.4% and 24.8%, respectively. The adoption of ISSM led to a significant increase in total and available P and K content within the 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm soil layers and enhanced the available P and K content across all aggregate size fractions within the 0-20 cm soil layer. Conclusion: ISSM is capable of achieving long-term high and stable yields for spring maize, enhancing the uptake and utilization of P and K in plants, and bolstering the soil's capacity to supply these nutrients, thereby fostering the sustainable development of the entire soil-crop system. The initial emergence of the primary root from a germinating seed is a pivotal phase that influences a plant's survival. Abiotic factors such as pH, nutrient availability, and soil composition significantly affect root morphology and architecture. Of particular interest is the impact of nutrient flow on thigmomorphogenesis, a response to mechanical stimulation in early root growth, which remains largely unexplored. This study explores the intricate factors influencing early root system development, with a focus on the cooperative correlation between nutrient uptake and its flow dynamics. Using a physiologically as well as ecologically relevant, portable, and cost-effective microfluidic system for the controlled fluid environments offering hydraulic conductivity comparable to that of the soil, this study analyzes the interplay between nutrient flow and root growth post-germination. Emphasizing the relationship between root growth and nitrogen uptake, the findings reveal that nutrient flow significantly influences early root morphology, leading to increased length and improved nutrient uptake, varying with the flow rate. The experimental findings are supported by mechanical and plant stress-related fluid flow–root interaction simulations and quantitative determination of nitrogen uptake using the total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) method. Milk‐derived exosomes (MDEs), being a component of milk, have the potential to support immune system maturation in offspring and enhance immune cell proliferation. Through the transport and transmission of essential signaling molecules, MDEs contribute to the regulation of intergenerational and intraspecies communication, thereby impacting nutrient uptake and metabolic functions. A comprehensive comprehension of MDE functionalities is imperative for enhancing the quality of the dairy industry. A systematic search of the databases PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus utilizing predetermined keywords resulted in the identification of 418 articles, of which 67 were chosen for inclusion in this review, which specifically explores the intersection of immune response and nutrition. AbstractIncreasing global land degradation and human population necessitate more agricultural production; therefore, plant cultivation may expand to nutrient-limited areas to meet growing food demands. As an environmentally safe application, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have a high potential to promote plant growth under stress conditions. The present study examined the impacts of single and co-inoculations of two high- and two low-biofilm- and exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing Bacillus (B) and Azotobacter (A) strains on wheat growth in nutrient-limited soil. High- and low-biofilm-/EPS-producing strains were designated as + ve and − ve, respectively. Among the treatments applied, high-biofilm- and EPS-producing B (−) A (+) and B (+) A (−) treatments significantly enhanced shoot length by 20.4–24.5%, shoot fresh weight by 22.2–27.4%, root length by 31.4–37.1%, root fresh weight by 31.9–34.8%, and root dry weight by 27.2–31.4% over the non-inoculated control. Such two treatments also increased the uptake of nutrients (Ca, K, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn) by the roots more than almost all the other applications. A higher nutrient uptake enhanced the leaf chlorophyll contents and decreased antioxidant enzymes (catalase and peroxidase) activities in wheat seedlings exposed to the respective two treatments. The synergy between co-inoculated bacterial strains and their high-biofilm-/EPS-producing potential in B (−) A (+) and B (+) A (−) treatments appear to have a better role in enhanced wheat growth under nutrient stress by improving plant nutrient availability. Intercropping systems have garnered attention as a sustainable agricultural approach for efficient land use, increased ecological diversity in farmland, and enhanced crop yields. This study examined the effect of intercropping on the kiwifruit rhizosphere to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships between cover plants and kiwifruit in this sustainable agricultural system. Soil physicochemical properties and bacterial communities were analyzed using the Kiwifruit-Agaricus blazei intercropping System. Moreover, a combined analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomic sequencing was used to identify differential microbes and metabolites in the rhizosphere. Intercropping led to an increase in soil physicochemical and enzyme activity, as well as re-shaping the bacterial community and increasing microbial diversity. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Myxococcota, and Patescibacteria were the most abundant and diverse phyla in the intercropping system. Expression analysis further revealed that the bacterial genera BIrii41, Acidibacter, and Altererythrobacter were significantly upregulated in the intercropping system. Moreover, 358 differential metabolites (DMs) were identified between the monocropping and intercropping cultivation patterns, with fatty acyls, carboxylic acids and derivatives, and organooxygen compounds being significantly upregulated in the intercropping system. The KEGG metabolic pathways further revealed considerable enrichment of DMs in ABC transporters, histidine metabolism, and pyrimidine metabolism. This study identified a significant correlation between 95 bacterial genera and 79 soil metabolites, and an interactive network was constructed to explore the relationships between these differential microbes and metabolites in the rhizosphere. This study demonstrated that Kiwifruit-Agaricus blazei intercropping can be an effective, labor-saving, economic, and sustainable practice for reshaping bacterial communities and promoting the accumulation and metabolism of beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere. Summary: Intercropping leads to different plant roots directly influencing belowground processes and has gained interest for its promotion of increased crop yields and resource utilization. However, the precise mechanisms through which the interactions between rhizosphere metabolites and the microbiome contribute to plant production remain ambiguous, thus impeding the understanding of the yield‐enhancing advantages of intercropping.This study conducted field experiments (initiated in 2013) and pot experiments, coupled with multi‐omics analysis, to investigate plant–metabolite–microbiome interactions in the rhizosphere of maize.Field‐based data revealed significant differences in metabolite and microbiome profiles between the rhizosphere soils of maize monoculture and intercropping. In particular, intercropping soils exhibited higher microbial diversity and metabolite chemodiversity. The chemodiversity and composition of rhizosphere metabolites were significantly related to the diversity, community composition, and network complexity of soil microbiomes, and this relationship further impacted plant nutrient uptake. Pot‐based findings demonstrated that the exogenous application of a metabolic mixture comprising key components enriched by intercropping (soyasapogenol B, 6‐hydroxynicotinic acid, lycorine, shikimic acid, and phosphocreatine) significantly enhanced root activity, nutrient content, and biomass of maize in natural soil, but not in sterilized soil.Overall, this study emphasized the significance of rhizosphere metabolite–microbe interactions in enhancing yields in intercropping systems. Background: To optimize irrigation water use and productivity, understanding the interactions between plants, irrigation techniques, and fertilization practices is crucial. Therefore, the experiment aims to assess the effectiveness of two application methods of potassium humate combined with chelated zinc under partial root-zone drip irrigation techniques on maize nutrient uptake, yield, and irrigation water use efficiency across two irrigation levels. Methods: Open-field experiments were carried out in two summer seasons of 2021 and 2022 under alternate and fixed partial root-zone drip irrigation techniques to investigate their impacts at two irrigation levels and applied foliar and soil applications of potassium humate or chelated zinc in a sole and combinations on maize. Results: Deficit irrigation significantly increased hydrogen peroxide levels and decreased proline, antioxidant enzymes, carbohydrate, chlorophyll (a + b), and nutrient uptake in both partial root-zone techniques. The implementation of combined soil application of potassium humate and chelated zinc under drought conditions on maize led to varying impacts on antioxidant enzymes and nutritional status, depending on the type of partial root-zone technique. Meanwhile, the results showed that fixed partial root-zone irrigation diminished the negative effects of drought stress by enhancing phosphorus uptake (53.8%), potassium uptake (59.2%), proline (74.4%) and catalase (75%); compared to the control. These enhancements may contribute to improving the defense system of maize plants in such conditions. On the other hand, the same previous treatments under alternate partial root zone modified the defense mechanism of plants and improved the contents of peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and the uptake of magnesium, zinc, and iron by 81.3%, 82.3%, 85.1%, 56.9%, and 80.2%, respectively. Conclusions: Adopting 75% of the irrigation requirements and treating maize plants with the soil application of 3 g l−1 potassium humate combined with 1.25 kg ha−1 chelated zinc under alternate partial root-zone technique, resulted in the maximum root length, leaf water content, chlorophyll content, yield, and irrigation water use efficiency. The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is perhaps the world's best-known botanical carnivore. The act of prey capture and digestion along with its rapidly closing, charismatic traps make this species a compelling model for studying the evolution and fundamental biology of carnivorous plants. There is a growing body of research on the genome, transcriptome, and digestome of Dionaea muscipula, but surprisingly limited information on changes in trap transcript abundance over time since feeding. Here we present the results of a comparative transcriptomics project exploring the transcriptomic changes across seven timepoints in a 72-hour time series of prey digestion and three timepoints directly comparing triggered traps with and without prey items. We document a dynamic response to prey capture including changes in abundance of transcripts with Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to digestion and nutrient uptake. Comparisons of traps with and without prey documented 174 significantly differentially expressed genes at 1 hour after triggering and 151 genes with significantly different abundances at 24 hours. Approximately 50% of annotated protein-coding genes in Venus flytrap genome exhibit change (10041 of 21135) in transcript abundance following prey capture. Whereas peak abundance for most of these genes was observed within 3 hours, an expression cluster of 3009 genes exhibited continuously increasing abundance over the 72-hour sampling period, and transcript for these genes with GO annotation terms including both catabolism and nutrient transport may continue to accumulate beyond 72 hours. Orchids and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) plants evolved independently and have different structures and fungal partners, but they both facilitate nutrient uptake. Orchid mycorrhiza (OM) supports orchid seed germination, but unlike AM, its role in disease resistance of mature plants is largely unknown. Here, we examined whether OM induces systemic disease resistance against a necrotrophic pathogen in a similar fashion to AM. We investigated the priming effect of mycorrhizal fungi inoculation on resistance of a terrestrial orchid, Bletilla striata, to soft rot caused by Dickeya fangzhongdai. We found that root colonization by a compatible OM fungus primed B. striata seedlings and induced systemic resistance against the infection. Transcriptome analysis showed that priming was mediated by the downregulation of jasmonate and ethylene pathways and that these pathways are upregulated once infection occurs. Comparison with the reported transcriptome of AM fungus-colonized rice leaves revealed similar mechanisms in B. striata and in rice. Modern agriculture's goal of improving crop resource acquisition efficiency relies on the intricate relationship between the root system and the soil. Root and rhizosphere traits play a critical role in the efficient use of nutrients and water, especially under dynamic environments. This review emphasizes a holistic perspective, challenging the conventional separation of nutrient and water uptake processes and the necessity for an integrated approach. Anticipating climate change-induced increase in the likelihood of extreme weather events that result in fluctuations in soil moisture and nutrient availability, the study explores the adaptive potential of root and rhizosphere traits to mitigate stress. We emphasize the significance of root and rhizosphere characteristics that enable crops to rapidly respond to varying resource availabilities (i.e. the presence of water and mobile nutrients in the root zone) and their accessibility (i.e. the possibility to transport resources to the root surface). These traits encompass for example root hairs, mucilage and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) exudation, rhizosheath formation and the expression of nutrient and water transporters. Moreover, we recognize the challenge of balancing carbon investments, especially under stress, where optimized traits must consider carbon-efficient strategies. To advance our understanding, the review calls for well-designed field experiments, recognizing the limitations of controlled environments. Non-destructive methods such as mini rhizotron assessments and in-situ stable isotope techniques, in combination with destructive approaches such as root exudation analysis, are proposed for assessing root and rhizosphere traits. The present research explored the impact of varying concentrations of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus inoculum and vermicompost on the growth, nutrient absorption, photosynthetic gas exchange, and quality parameters of ginger over a 2-year period in field conditions. In this study, the combination of 50 g each of AM and vermicompost increased plant height, number of tillers, and rhizome yield compared to the control. However, higher dry biomass (61 g) was observed with the combination of 75 g of each amendment. As expected, the application of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) positively affects spore count and mycorrhizal dependency percentage ranging from 58 to 70.5 spores per 50 g substrate and 19-36%, respectively. The combined use of vermicompost and AM led to a lower disease incidence of 10.5% in treatments with 25 g of each amendment and 10.1% in treatments with 50 g of each. Nutrient accumulations, particularly phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn), exhibited greater levels in ginger plants treated with vermicompost and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) inoculation, compared to uninoculated ginger rhizomes. The plants treated with AM and vermicompost increased the biomass accumulation by increasing the stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate of leaves. AM and vermicompost improved ginger rhizome quality, increasing phenols by 37.8%, flavonoids by 35.7%, and essential oil by 29% compared to the control. The analysis revealed that the total flavonoid content was significantly higher in AM-treated samples compared to the control. However, the phenol content did not exhibit statistical significance across the treatments. Regarding essential oil (EO) content, our experiment highlighted that treatments with AM and vermicompost have consistently yielded higher EO content compared to other treatments. In contrast, there was no discernible trend in the fiber content with the application of AM and vermicompost amendments. PCA and correlation analyses revealed a positive influence on plant growth, nutrient absorption, and quality parameters, except for the incidence of diseases in ginger. Overall, our study finds that the concurrent use of vermicompost and arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) makes a substantial contribution to the growth, nutrient uptake, photosynthetic, and quality parameters of ginger. In cereal-based farming, there is significant influence of tillage and residue incorporation as sustainable practices, although their role in crop production is still unclear. Two field trials were executed during winter seasons to evaluate the best-performing crop residue and tillage system for the nutrition and yield of rice at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University. In the first trial, residues from soybean, black gram, and rice were incorporated into the soil with 75% recommended fertilizer doses (RFD). The grain yields were 5.97, 6.21, and 6.10 t ha−1, respectively in rice, soybean, and black gram residue-treated plots, which were increased by 77.15, 84.27, and 81.01%, respectively, over the control. In the second trial, the residues from black gram and rice were incorporated with 100% RFD under conventional tillage (CT) and minimum tillage (MT) for two years, where CT with black gram residue plus 100% fertilizer (CT-I2) exhibited the highest grain yield of 6.69 and 6.88 t ha−1, increasing by 7.61% and 8% over 100% RFD. Both CT and MT performed similarly, and their combination with legume residue strongly influenced crop performance and nutrient uptake. Reconfigurability within hydrogels has emerged as an attractive functionality that can be used in information encryption, cargo/delivery, environmental remediation, soft robotics, and medicine. Here micro‐patterned polymer hydrogels capable of temperature‐dependent reconfigurability are fabricated. For this, the hydrogels are provided with micron‐sized Pickering emulsion droplets stabilized by magnetic particles, which are capable of harnessing energy from external force fields. The droplets can both migrate under magnetic field gradients and heat the environment when laser irradiated. These functions not only affect a single compartment but have higher‐order effects on the mesoscale, thanks to the temperature‐responsiveness of the polymeric network. This double responsiveness is exploited to control the spatial organization of hundreds of droplets within the hydrogel matrix and form predesigned and sophisticated patterns. Furthermore, pattern self‐reconfiguration driven by the droplets themselves upon laser irradiation is induced. Finally, we show that due to their internal liquid phase, the droplets can be used as reservoirs of hydrophobic nutrients for living cells (i.e., Yarrowia lipolytica yeast) in the solid‐like environment of the polymeric network, and demonstrate communication between the droplets and the cells to facilitate nutrient uptake. Altogether, the results provide opportunities for the development of stimuli‐sensitive polymer hydrogels with post‐synthesis reprogrammable response using micro‐compartments as building blocks. The biogeochemical role of the sediments in the Guadalquivir River estuary, a vital region in the SW Iberian Peninsula, has been considerably neglected. The benthic microalgae (microphytobenthos, MPB) inhabiting the sediment surface could contribute to the autochthonous primary production and influence nutrient recycling in this hyper-turbid and hypernutrified estuary. Sediment-water column fluxes of O2 and dissolved inorganic nitrogen species (DIN = NH4 + +NO3 -+NO2 -) were assessed in laboratory incubations of sediment cores from Bonanza (mouth) and Lebrija (middle) during a 1-year study. Vertical profiles down to the 10-cm depth of photosynthetic pigments, organic C, total nitrogen, DIN, Fe2+, SO42-, and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) were also measured. Chlorophyll a in the sediment surface was higher at the estuarine mouth, exhibiting a seasonal pattern at both sites with highest values in winter and lowest in summer. Net community production (NCP) was higher in Bonanza compared with Lebrija and showed positive values most of the year, indicating that MPB contributed to the overall autochthonous primary production of the estuary. Seasonal changes in chlorophyll a and NCP were not parallel, suggesting different ecological controls. The sediment was generally a net sink of NO3 - and NH4 + in both sites, with several fold higher rates for NO3 - uptake. MPB N demand could account for the entire sediment DIN uptake in Bonanza and 21% in Lebrija. The remaining high NO3 - uptake rates indicate that they sustain elevated sediment denitrification rates. In contrast, rates of anaerobic oxidation of organic matter by Fe reduction and SO4 2-reduction, estimated from Fe2+ and SO4 2-vertical concentration profiles, were several orders of magnitude lower than the estimated water column-dependent denitrification rates. Overall, this study shows the importance of MPB in the Guadalquivir Estuary and the potential dominant role of denitrification in the anaerobic mineralization of organic matter. Introduction: The application of mineral fertilizers deteriorates soil properties and affects crop yield and nutritional properties. However, plant growthpromoting microorganisms (PGPM-Serendipita indica, phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB), and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM)) have great potential to reduce fertilizers and improve soil fertility, crop yield, and nutrient uptake and mitigate the environmental effect of mineral fertilizers. Material and methods: Hence, a field experiment was conducted involving nine treatments to evaluate the effects of PGPM along with 50% or 100% of the recommended dose of fertilizers on plant growth, soil fertility, nutrient uptake, and onion productivity. Results and discussion: Results indicated that 100% RDF combined with S. indica or PSB led to improved plant growth, and higher nutrient concentrations in both leaves and bulbs of onions compared to RDF alone. Moreover, the application of 100% RDF with S. indica increased total dry matter yield by 11.5% and 7.6% in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons, respectively, compared to 100% RDF alone. This treatment also resulted in the highest nutrient uptake, with N uptake increasing by 6.9%-29.9%, P by 13.7%-21.7%, K by 20.0%-23.7%, and S by 18.1%-23.4%. Additionally, the combination of 100% RDF with S. indica inoculation led to a notable increase in bulb yield, with increments of 16.2% and 13.9% observed in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, respectively, compared to 100% RDF alone. Similarly, the application of 100% RDF along with PSB inoculation resulted in an increase in bulb yield by 7.2% and 9.4% in the respective years. However, VAM did not exhibit satisfactory performance or improvements in the onion crop. Conclusion: Overall, the study suggests that combining 100% RDF with S. indica or PSB can enhance onion productivity and nutrient use efficiency. The present study may open a new avenue of PGPM application in enhancing onion yield and improving the bulb quality as well as soil health. Cells rely heavily on the uptake of exogenous nutrients for survival, growth, and differentiation. Yet quantifying the uptake of small molecule nutrients at the single cell level is difficult. Here we present a new approach to studying the nutrient uptake in live single cells using Inverse Electron‐Demand Diels Alder (IEDDA) chemistry. We have modified carboxyfluorescein‐diacetate‐succinimidyl esters (CFSE)—a quenched fluorophore that can covalently react with proteins and is only turned on in the cytosol of a cell following esterase activity—with a tetrazine. This tetrazine serves as a second quencher for the pendant fluorophore. Upon reaction with nutrients modified with an electron‐rich or strained dienophile in an IEDDA reaction, this quenching group is destroyed, thereby enabling the probe to fluoresce. This has allowed us to monitor the uptake of a variety of dienophile‐containing nutrients in live primary immune cell populations using flow cytometry and live‐cell microscopy. A tomato cultivar ('Izmir F1') grafted onto six commercially available rootstocks ('Arnold', 'Dohkko', 'Emperador', 'He-man', 'Kaiser', and 'Suzuka') together with self-grafted plants of the tomato cultivar (Izmir/Izmir) were included in a pot experiment. Growth, root morphology and nutrient uptake parameters were evaluated under different salinity conditions (0 and 50 mM NaCl). Grafting increases root length, specific root length, and root length ratio, which enhances the capabilities of hetero-grafted plants to exploit a larger volume of soil or otherwise increase root density under root restriction conditions. Since the root traits and nutrient concentrations in hetero-grafted variants were less impacted by a change in the salinity level, the use of specific rootstocks (‘Arnold,’ ‘Dohkko,’ ‘Kaiser’) could contribute to a steadier growth and yield of tomato plants under fluctuating salinity levels in the irrigation water. The hetero-grafted tomato plants (Dohkko/Izmir, Suzuka/Izmir) demonstrated higher Na sequestration/compartmentalization capabilities than the self-grafted (Izmir/Izmir) plants which helps to maintain a more appropriate K+/Na+ ratio. By exhibiting lower translocation indexes of some heavy metals (Al, Ni, Zn, and Cd), appropriate rootstock/scion combinations might be a useful tool for reducing the risk of their accumulation in edible plant organs. The management of nitrogen (N) fertilization is of fundamental importance in hydroponics. To reduce the supply of nitrate (NO3-) in fertigation recipes for Batavia lettuce crops grown in closed hydroponics, partial replacement of nitrate by chloride (NO3-/Cl-) at different ratios but with the same equivalent sum was experimentally tested. The experiment included four nutritional treatments in the replenishment nutrient solution, particularly T1; 0.7mMCl-/19mMNO3-, T2;2mM Cl-/17.7 mM NO3-, T3; 4 mM Cl-/15.7 mM NO3- and T4; 6 mM Cl-/13.7 mM NO3-. The results showed that reducing nitrate supply combinedwith equivalent increase in chloride application gradually reduced the gap between nitrate input and nitrogen uptake concentrations, with the smallest differences occurring in T4 treatment, which reduced the nitrate concentration in the drainage by 50%. The tested treatments led to very small variations in plant water uptake, production of fresh biomass and nutritional quality, which is justified by the proper functioning of key physiological mechanisms, such as stomatal conductance, which was followed by an increased efficiency of nitrogen use up to 25% (kg fresh biomass kg-1 N supply). The steady level of C/N ratio in the plant tissue irrespective of NO3-/Cl- supply ratio points to sufficiency in photosynthetic products and adequacy in the supply of nitrogen, although leaf Cl- content increased up to 19.6 mg g-1 dry weight in the lowest NO3-/Cl- treatment. Nutrient uptake concentrations were determined as follows: 13.4 (N), 1.72 (P), 10.2 (K), 3.13 (Ca), 0.86 (Mg,mmol L-1), 27.8 (Fe), 5.63 (Mn), 5.45 (Zn) and 0.72 (Cu, mmol L-1). This study suggests that replacing 30% of NO3- supply with Cl- in fertigation recipes for hydroponic lettuce crops reduces leaf nitrate content without affecting physiological processes, growth, and quality, verifying in parallel the role of chloride as a beneficial macronutrient. To adapt to a terrestrial habitat, the ancestors of land plants must have made several morphological and physiological modifications, such as a meristem allowing for three-dimensional growth, rhizoids for water and nutrient uptake, air pore complexes or stomata that permit air exchange, and a defense system to cope with oxidative stress that occurs frequently in a terrestrial habitat. To understand how the meristem was determined during land plant evolution, we characterized the function of the closest PLETHORA homolog in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha , which we named Mp PLT. Through a transgenic approach, we showed that Mp PLT is expressed not only in the stem cells at the apical notch but also in the proliferation zone of the meristem, as well as in cells that form the air-pore complex and rhizoids. Using the CRISPR method we then created mutants for Mp PLT and found that the mutants are not only defective in meristem maintenance but also compromised in air-pore complex and rhizoid development. Strikingly, at later developmental stages, numerous gemma-like structures were formed in Mp plt mutants, suggesting developmental arrest. Further experiments indicated that Mp PLT promotes plant growth by regulating Mp WOX , which shared a similar expression pattern to Mp PLT , and genes involved in auxin and cytokinin signaling pathways. Through transcriptome analyses, we found that Mp PLT also has a role in redox homeostasis and that this role is essential for plant growth. Taken together, these results suggest that Mp PLT has a crucial role in liverwort growth and development and hence may have played a crucial role in early land plant evolution. Epiphytes develop anatomical features to improve efficiency of the uptake of water and nutrients, such as absorptive foliar scales or a velamen radicum. Despite substantial studies on the occurrence, morphology, development and phylogeny of the velamen, most of the available literature is focused on Orchidaceae, making current knowledge on velamen clearly biased. A recent publication firmly established that velamina are common in Anthurium species. Thus, this study provides further insights by describing velamen morphological characteristics of Anthurium species and classifying them into different velamen types. Furthermore, we investigate if the different velamen morphological traits are clade‐specific and phylogenetically conserved within the genus.Using SEM, we performed a morphological study on 89 Anthurium species, describing six micromorphological traits of velamen and exodermis, following traits used to classify Orchidaceae velamen by Porembski & Barthlott (1988).We distinguished nine velamen types, including two that are unique to Anthurium and not similar to any type found in Orchidaceae. Comparing velamen morphology within the phylogenetic tree of Anthurium revealed clear phylogenetic signals.This study provides detailed morphological descriptions among 89 species of Anthurium from the Araceae, and substantially broadens our knowledge of this tissue. However, velamen function has been even less studied, with hardly anything known about functional significance of having secondary cell wall thickening and perforations on velamen cell walls. Drought stress is one of the major impediments to plant growth. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can mitigate moisture stress in plants by increasing the ability of plant nutrient uptake and transport. In this study, we investigated the root phenotype, mineral nutrients (in leaves, roots, and soil), soil pH, water saturation deficit (WSD), free water content (FWC), and bound water content (BWC) of leaves of two alfalfa varieties, 'Galalxie Max' (drought-tolerant) and 'Saidi 7' (drought-sensitive), in the presence or absence of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens QST713 under drought stress conditions. The results showed that water stress negatively affected both cultivar root morphology (total root length, average diameter, total surface area, and volume) and the contents of K and Fe in leaves, roots, and soil. It also reduced the Mn and Zn contents in the soil while increasing the content of Na in the leaves and soil. Additionally, alfalfa plants under drought stress exhibited higher levels of soil pH, WSD, and BWC but lower contents of FWC and ratios of BWC/FWC in the leaves of both cultivars. However, QST713 application significantly enhanced the total root length, average root diameter, and the contents of K and Fe in alfalfa leaves, roots, and soil, as well as the BWC/FWC ratio in leaves under drought stress conditions. A significant reduction in the Na content was detected in QST713-treated alfalfa leaves and soil under drought stress. Furthermore, QST713 application noticeably decreased soil pH and WSD. The current findings showed that QST713 enhanced the water stress tolerance of alfalfa plants by ameliorating root morphology, reducing soil pH, and improving the BWC/FWC ratio, consequently promoting the accumulation of mineral nutrients (mainly K and Fe). Overall, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens QST713 can serve as a potential green fertilizer in sustainable agriculture to improve soil nutrients and enhance plant production under increasing drought conditions. Biochar is widely used to maintain crop yields and the sustainability of agroecosystems due to its characteristics. However, its effect on vegetable yield and quality in southern acidic soils has not been fully elucidated. The effects of two kinds of biochar application rates (3 t ha−1 and 12 t ha−1) on the nutrient availability, nutrient absorption, yield, and fruit quality of sandy acid oxide soil in South China were studied in a 2-year field experiment using two varieties of wax gourd (Tiezhu No. 2 and Dadao). The results showed that optimized fertilization (OPT, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were reduced by 20.0%, 20.6%, and 21.1%, respectively) did not reduce the yield of the different varieties of wax gourd compared to FP (farmer practice). On the basis of the OPT treatment, the application of biochar increased the yield of Tiezhu No. 2 and Dadao wax gourd by 16.0–27.3% and 7.7–13.3%, respectively. The increase in yield was attributed to the improvement in soil organic carbon content which increased by 4.5–19.7%, nutrient effectiveness (NO3−-N and Olsen-P content enhanced by 23.7–27.0% and 15.3–23.4% in Tiezhu No. 2), and nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg accumulation increased significantly by 21.1%, 46.1%, 36.8%, 25.7%, and 31.9%, respectively) by the plant after the biochar application. Different types of biochar also have some differences in these three aspects. Specifically, under the same dosage, rice biochar has a more significant effect on increasing the yield of winter melon, and has a better effect on the improvement of soil physical and chemical properties, while sawdust biochar has a more significant effect on nutrient absorption. In addition, the commercial quality, namely hardness and glossiness, and the nutritional quality, namely soluble sugar, soluble protein, VC content, and sugar–acid ratio of wax gourd fruits, were significantly improved after the biochar application. In summary, biochar application on acidic soils in South China could achieve a win–win situation in terms of increasing soil nutrient effectiveness to improve vegetable yield and quality while reducing chemical fertilizer. Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) stress significantly affect the growth, physiological characteristics, and nutrient uptake of rice plants. This study investigated the photosynthetic nitrogen (N) metabolism, N uptake, and N utilization of plants under varied P and K supplies. Two local conventional high-yield rice varieties (Shennong 265 and Liaojing 294) were used. These varieties were subjected to the following hydroponic experimental treatments: HPHK (normal P and K concentrations), HPLK (normal P and 1/20 normal K concentration), LPHK (normal K and 1/20 normal P concentration), and LPLK (1/20 normal P and K concentrations). The results showed that the mesophyll cells had a relatively complete nuclear and chloroplast structures, and the antioxidant enzymes of the plants were significantly reduced under the HPHK treatment. Compared to the LP treatments (LPHK and LPLK), the HPHK treatment was found to have the following potential effects: effectively optimize plant configuration; promote leaf development (Pn, E, Ci, and Tr, chlorophyll, and leaf area index); significantly increase the N-metabolism-related enzyme activity of leaves and roots and the accumulation of N in the plant in the main growth stages; and significantly increase the rice yield and N-related efficiency. In conclusion, the HPHK treatment was found to be beneficial in improving the plant configuration, promoting photosynthetic N metabolism, and increasing grain yield and N-related utilization efficiency. A well‐developed root system is essential for efficient nutrient and water uptake. We phenotyped a set of 172 Triticum durum–Aegilops speltoides backcross introgression lines (BILs) for various root architecture traits during 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 cropping seasons. The roots were sampled at the maximum tillering stage, and data on various root architecture traits were recorded. The quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping was carried out using 5672 polymorphic SNPs obtained from genotyping‐by‐sequencing. A total of 21 QTLs were detected for various root architecture traits on chromosomes 1A, 2A, 2B, 3B, 5A and 6B. Stable QTLs were detected for total root length, number of root tips and root dry weight over the two seasons. Candidate genes were identified by scanning the physical interval corresponding to the linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay flanking the SNPs linked to the stable QTLs. In silico expression studies of postulated candidate genes revealed root‐specific upregulation of some of the genes. Background and aims: Nutrient allocation and scaling affect plant strategy and metabolism but this information is rarely incorporated into fundamental ecological frameworks. One important question is whether plants with a different ecological strategy share the same nutrient allocation patterns. Methods: Here, we tested scaling between nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations in aboveground tissues of 130 co-occurring Central European grassland species, and examined whether scaling is consistent within the competitor, stress-tolerator, ruderal (CSR) framework. Results: Tissue element-element relationships were typically isometric (1:1 ratio). However, we observed a few anisometries: K accelerated with N (5:4 ratio), and the scaling of the combined suites of elements (N x P and K x Ca x Mg) deviated from isometry with a 3:4 ratio. We observed no N-Ca and P-Ca relationship. Scaling coefficients and normalisation constants were mostly consistent regardless of plant height or CSR strategy. However, N-Ca and Ca-Mg scaling was apparent only in less competitive species (C scores below median) and for P-K scaling, the normalisation constant was almost twice as high in ruderals than in less ruderal species. Conclusion: Consistent and proportional nutrient allocation patterns in co-occurring species with different CSR strategies suggest dominant influence of common rules governing nutrient uptake and utilisation in temperate herbs. Tissue Ca could be an exception because its allocation with respect to N and Mg changes along the competitive spectrum, possibly reflecting the role of Ca in cell wall stability and integrity. The application of seaweed extract and microbial biostimulants has been suggested as a promising approach to overcome yield-limiting factors in organic farming. Yet, information regarding their impact on organic strawberry production is limited. This 2-year field study evaluated the effect of seaweed extract and microbial biostimulants and their synergistic effects on strawberry plant growth, nutrient uptake, fruit yield, and quality under organic production. The biostimulant effects were compared on two strawberry cultivars: Sweet SensationVR Florida127 and Florida Brilliance. Over two seasons, the combination of seaweed extract plus microbial biostimulants applied biweekly consistently resulted in a significant increase of whole-season marketable and total strawberry fruit yields by 23% and 20% on average, respectively, compared with the no-biostimulant control. Application of either biostimulant alone did not consistently show positive effects on strawberry productivity. Modified strawberry root system architecture, enhanced N uptake, increased number of crowns, and higher soil respiration were observed in the biostimulant combination treatment in contrast to the no-biostimulant control. The biostimulant impact was not influenced by strawberry cultivar, but genotypic difference in yield performance under organic production was observed. 'Florida Brilliance' produced significantly higher total fruit number and yield than 'Florida127' by 26% and 12%, respectively, in the first season, and by 34% and 11%, respectively, in the second season. Marketable fruit number (by 18%) and yield (by 9%) of 'Florida Brilliance' were also higher in the first season, along with greater marketable fruit number (by 31%) in the second season. In addition, 'Florida Brilliance' showed significantly higher values of SPAD index, photosynthetic rate (early harvest), and fruit mineral contents based on dry weight (late harvest) than 'Florida127' in both seasons. Although the biostimulant treatments exhibited little influence on the fruit quality attributes including soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), SSC/TA, and total anthocyanin content, varietal differences were observed with significantly higher levels of SSC and lower contents of total anthocyanins in 'Florida 127' vs. 'Florida Brilliance' during each season. The benefits of combined application of seaweed extract and microbial biostimulants demonstrated in this study suggest the need to further elucidate their synergistic functions in promoting nutrient uptake and fruit yield in organic strawberry production systems under different soil and environmental conditions. We investigated the growth dynamics of hydroponic lettuce (Lactuca sativa) driven by the influence that potassium (K+) has on crop growth. This study aimed to determine whether increased K+ concentrations under different daily light integrals (DLIs) in a hydroponic system will boost growth of greenhouse lettuce. This study was conducted within a controlled glass greenhouse environment with varying DLIs achieved by integrating an adaptive lighting control system over a 16-hour photoperiod. We used three K+ treatments of 200, 400, or 600 mg·L-1 K+ and six DLI lighting treatments of 11.1, 12.9, 14.6, 15.9, 16.9, and 17 mol·m-2·d-1. We found that increasing K+ did not increase shoot dry weight, leaf area, or specific leaf area with increasing DLIs. Although K+ and DLI had an interacting effect on the root dry weight fraction, leaf chlorophyll content, and quantum yield of photosystem II, the K+ treatments did not increase or decrease with increasing DLIs. The influencing factor was DLI, which led to increases in shoot dry weight and leaf area, whereas a decrease in specific leaf area was observed with increasing DLIs. Ultimately, adding supplemental concentrations of K+ did not enhance lettuce growth, nor did these effects show any increase with increasing DLIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physical properties of nano-fertilizers (NFs) are important in determining their performance, efficacy, and environmental interactions. Nano-fertilizers, due to their small size and high surface area-to-volume ratio, enhance plant metabolic reactions, resulting in higher crop yields. The properties of nano-fertilizers depend on the synthesis methods used. The nanoparticle's nutrient use efficiency (NUE) varies among plant species. This review aims to analyze the relationship between the physical properties of NF and their influence on crop performance and nutrient uptake efficiency. The review focuses on the physical properties of NFs, specifically their size, shape, crystallinity, and agglomeration. This review found that smaller particle-sized nanoparticles exhibit higher nutrient use efficiency than larger particles. Nano-fertilizer-coated additives gradually release nutrients, reducing the need for frequent application and addressing limitations associated with chemical fertilizer utilization. The shapes of nano-fertilizers have varying effects on the overall performance of plants. The crystalline structure of nanoparticles promotes a slow release of nutrients. Amorphous nano-fertilizers improve the NUE and, ultimately, crop yield. Agglomeration results in nanoparticles losing their nanoscale size, accumulating on the outer surface, and becoming unavailable to plants. With emerging water scarcity and rising fertilizer prices, optimising future water use while maintaining yield and nutrient efficiency in irrigated rice is crucial. Alternate wetting and moderate soil drying irrigation (i.e., re-irrigation when the water level reaches 15 cm below the soil surface) has proven to be an efficient water-saving technology in semi-arid zones of West Africa, reducing water inputs without yield penalty. Alternate wetting and severe soil drying (AWD30), by re-irrigating fields only when the water table reaches 30 cm below the soil surface, may further reduce water inputs compared to farmers' irrigation practices (FP). However, acute soil drying may impair fertilizer use efficiency and reduce the bio-availability of some key nutrients. This study assessed the potentials and risks associated with AWD30 for smallholder rice farmers in the semi-arid zones of West Africa. We conducted 30 on-farm field trials over three seasons (wet and dry seasons of 2019, and dry season of 2020), in Kou Valley, Burkina Faso. We assessed yield, water productivity, nutrient uptake, and use efficiency under AWD30 and FP. In FP, farmers maintained their fields submerged as frequently as possible according to the scheme-dependent water provision schedule. With AWD30, irrigation frequency was reduced by 30%, however, soils were seldom completely dried due to a shallow groundwater table. Compared to FP, AWD30 reduced irrigation water input by 37% with no significant effects on grain yields (average of 4.5 Mg ha−1), thus increasing average water productivity by 39%. Both irrigation management practices provided comparable crop uptake of N, P, and K, and use efficiencies of applied N and P. However, the N content in straw and the P concentration in grain generally increased with total water input (rain + irrigation). We conclude that at locations with a shallow groundwater table, AWD30 can effectively save irrigation water without significantly reducing the grain yield and the use efficiency of applied mineral nutrients. In recent years, the periodic outbreak of green tides in the coastal areas of China, caused by the combined effects of environmental changes and human activities, has been attracting extensive attention due to the serious negative impacts on the coastal marine ecosystem. In the study, the samples of Ulva linza, a green tide species, were cultivated under two light intensities (LL: 80 mmol photons m-2 s-1; HL: 300 mmol photons m-2 s-1) and three stocking densities (LD: 0.2 g L-1; MD:1 g L-1; HD:2 g L-1) to explore the photosynthetic physiological responses and nutrients absorption capacity. The results showed that high light and low density significantly increased the growth rate of U. linza. Under the HLLD, the maximum growth rate of U. linza was 43.13% day-1 and the energy captured per unit reaction center for electron transfer (ET0/RC) was the highest. The higher density significantly decreased the maximum relative electron transfer rate (rETRmax) of U. linza, especially among groups subjected to high-light condition. Under HL condition, HD also significantly decreased light utilization efficiency (a) in U. linza. The contents of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids of U. linza were significantly lower in HLLD group compared to other treatment groups. The P uptake of U. linza was prominently inhibited by higher density, and the maximum P uptake and minimum P uptake was 17.94 mM g-1 FW day-1 in LLLD group and 2.74 mM g-1 FW day-1 in LLHD group, respectively. Lower density improved N uptake of U. linza, but high light had no effect on it. These results suggest that high light and lower density synergistically promote the growth of U. linza, which is likely due to enhanced photosynthetic efficiency and nutrient uptake. And the inhibitory effects of higher densities on growth, particularly under high-light conditions, may be due to increased competition for light and nutrients. In the late stage of the green tides outbreak, an increase in accumulation density could help to suppress the sustained outbreak of the green tides, particularly in high-light condition. The use of natural-origin biomaterials in bioengineering has led to innovative approaches in agroforestry. Bacterial cellulose (BC), sharing the same chemical formula as plant-origin cellulose (PC), exhibits significantly different biochemical properties, including a high degree of crystallinity and superior water retention capacity. Previous research showed that natural-origin glucose-based chitin enhanced plant growth in both herbaceous and non-herbaceous plants. In this study, we produced BC in the laboratory and investigated its effects on the substrate and on Solanum lycopersicum seedlings. Soil amended with BC increased root growth compared with untreated seedlings. Additionally, under limited irrigation conditions, BC increased global developmental parameters including fresh and dry weight, as well as total carbon and nitrogen content. Under non-irrigation conditions, BC contributed substantially to plant survival. RNA sequencing (Illumina®) on BC-treated seedlings revealed that BC, despite its bacterial origin, did not stress the plants, confirming its innocuous nature, and it lightly induced genes related to root development and cell division as well as inhibition of stress responses and defense. The presence of BC in the organic substrate increased soil availability of phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and potassium (K), correlating with enhanced nutrient uptake in plants. Our results demonstrate the potential of BC for improving soil nutrient availability and plant tolerance to low irrigation, making it valuable for agricultural and forestry purposes in the context of global warming. The extent to which soil enzyme activity in assessing soil nutrient availability is useful has been controversial. In this review, we discuss the utility of ecoenzymatic stoichiometry (i.e. the ratio of nutrient- to carbon (C)-acquiring enzyme activities) on the basis of the resource allocation model for ecoenzyme synthesis. Both the selection of appropriate enzymes and the balance between relative amounts of substrates and enzymes in the soil are decisive factors in utilizing the ecoenzymatic stoichiometry. Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry can evaluate the availability of nitrogen (N), phosphorus, and sulfur in many soils in which the enzyme catalytic reactions are substrate-limited but not enzyme-limited. However, the ecoenzymatic stoichiometry approach does not seem to be applicable in soils where microbes are limited by factors other than nutrient availability, such as low temperature, where the enzyme catalytic reactions are enzyme-limited. Certain enzymes, such as N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase and protease, appear to be insensitive to soil N availability, because they release compounds containing both N and C which serve as sources for both N and C/energy. We propose the use of enzymes such as L-asparaginase and urease as N-acquiring enzymes that release a compound containing N but not C (i.e. NH4+) as the hydrolysis product. Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry can be considered as an indicator of long-term (weeks) temporally integrated soil nutrient availability, rather than instantaneous availability, for plants as well as microbes, because of (i) the long-term persistence of extracellular enzymes in soils; (ii) a significant correlation between ecoenzymatic stoichiometry and the measurements reflecting the quantity of long-term available nutrients in soil; and (iii) a significant correlation between ecoenzymatic stoichiometry and plant nutrient uptake. This review also identifies challenges in assessing microbial nutrient limitation using ecoenzymatic stoichiometry. With a comprehensive understanding of underlying mechanisms and limitations, ecoenzymatic stoichiometry can be used as a biologically relevant indicator of nutrient availability in combination with other approaches such as conventional chemical extraction methods and the nutrient addition approach.
