Over the last decades, marketing literature has persistently been interested in how marketers and consumers alike engage with the past through past-themed brands, products, and services. However, our knowledge on past-themed marketing is scattered and treated in largely separated literature streams on retro, heritage, nostalgia, and vintage. This article reviews marketing literature on retro, heritage, nostalgia, and vintage – and their ontological, methodological, and axiological underpinnings – to synthesise a differential overview of these streams and contribute shared future research directions for researching and understanding past-themed marketing. Thus, based on our review, we identify and discuss areas for future research on marketing the past, specifically concerned with authenticity complexities and marketing management perspectives. Drawing from the concept of anemoia, the authors propose a new typology of nostalgia called vintage anemoia. Vintage anemoia encompasses consumers' positive and nostalgic response to vintage cues, regardless of specific historical periods or individual lived experiences. Through a series of seven studies, the authors demonstrate that vintage typography, by evoking feelings of vintage anemoia, can enhance consumer perceptions of product safety. This effect has positive downstream consequences on key marketing outcomes, including brand attitude, purchase intention, and willingness to pay. Furthermore, the effect of vintage anemoia on product safety perceptions remains unaffected by whether product safety information indicates that a product is safe or unsafe. However, the effect diminishes when an explicit indexical cue (year of establishment) is utilized or when promoting futuristic products. The findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge in marketing and provide insights for marketers on leveraging vintage typography as a strategic tool for creating emotional connections with consumers and enhancing perceptions of product safety. Through music, Little Saigon preserves the counter-memory of pre-1975 Vietnam, as post-War generations build avenues for intergenerational understandings and healing.

The abrupt shift to remote education during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected students' emotional well-being and their relationship with pedagogical infrastructure. This study employed anthropomorphized letter writing as a narrative trigger to invite management students to write to elements of their educational environment. We examined 49 letters penned by international students, addressing entities such as classmates, classrooms, and online tools. Our findings illustrate that students reveal their emotions, reflect upon their interactions with these targets, and ultimately reconcile their relationships with these entities, navigating the emotional complexities associated with remote education through their nostalgic narratives. This research contributes to the literature on emotional aspects of management education, the self-help benefits of letter writing, and the adaptive functions of nostalgia, offering practical guidance for educators who aim to support students' emotional well-being and autonomy during pandemic-related challenges and beyond. Traditional Big Top Circus has experienced a decline in popularity due to changing attitudes to its former elements and to the competition from other accessible forms of entertainment. Our study explores how childhood memories of circus experiences are retold and how these are revisited in the light of changing social values and life experiences. Data was generated through sixteen discussion groups with a total of eighty people over the age of 65 who had experienced circus in their childhood. Thematic analysis found that the circus experience still creates vivid memories decades later. These memories are based around emotions engendered by the sights, sounds and smells of the circus but also the fear of danger and the unknown. Our participants fondly remembered who they were with, highlighting the importance of the relational and social aspects in such leisure experiences. These factors induced a strong sense of nostalgia, but this was tainted by the recognition that what was enjoyed then may no longer be socially acceptable. We conclude that for traditional circus to remain relevant, it needs to harness the strength of nostalgia but separate this from guilt at what circus once included. In a highly competitive live experience, environment circus needs to create heightened sensory experiences (including fear), alongside family togetherness appealing to multiple generations with potentially different values. Retirees face numerous challenges, particularly in countries with lower socio-economic conditions. Perceived social isolation and happiness levels are seen as significant factors that significantly affect the quality of life in old age. Perceived social happiness levels can disrupt the quality of life in old age and contribute to mental disorders. Recent studies on leisure have suggested a direct impact of individuals' leisure attitudes on happiness. In this context, leisure nostalgia stands out in the relationship between leisure attitude and happiness levels among retirees. In this study, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the relationship between leisure attitude, leisure nostalgia, and happiness levels in a sample of 210 retirees. The findings revealed that leisure nostalgia fully mediated the relationship between leisure attitude and happiness. It was concluded that previous experiences significantly shape retirement, and leisure attitude offers valuable opportunities for enhancing happiness through effective leisure utilization. Populist parties have been increasingly successful in European politics over the last decade. Although research suggests that nostalgic deprivation – a perceived loss of economic, political or social status — is linked to support for populist parties, the generalizability of this argument across voters and national contexts remains unclear. In this research note, we leverage original representative surveys across 19 European countries to demonstrate that perceptions of declining status are a consistent predictor of populist support. Decomposing nostalgic deprivation into different dimensions, we find that while social, economic and power deprivation have different antecedents, each predicts populist attitudes and voting behaviour. Moreover, we find that nostalgic deprivation predicts support for populist platforms among both left‐wing and right‐wing respondents, as well as across Eastern and Western Europe.  While the antecedents differ across contexts, these findings confirm that perceptions of downward mobility are associated with the rise of populism in Europe. It argues that nostalgia should not be dismissed as an unreliable assessor of historic communality and instead highlights its importance in understanding post-conflict community atomisation. Equally, it advocates for an understanding that nostalgic sentiments can co-exist alongside traumatic recollections and understandings of generational traumas. Charlotte Smith's The Emigrants (1793), a blank verse critique of Revolutionary France during the Terror, probes the unstable connections between sentiment, nostalgia, and political will, especially in the context of gendered political engagement. To do so, Smith aligns herself with Milton's Satan. She uses this most subversive of Paradise Lost's characters as a model for articulating her own republican ideals and nostalgic sentiment, which both undermines and feeds her political engagement in the French Emigration Crisis. Comparing passages from The Emigrants and Paradise Lost, I argue that Smith expresses a nostalgia imbued with satanic despair to glean the political use-value of memory. Can politics – especially of a marginalized person – ever be nostalgic, or must it focus on future reform? I argue that Smith's satanic nostalgia protests the limited forms of political engagement for women in the period, the demands of charity on women, and their social disenfranchisement. The present paper seeks to analyze the queer aspects that are present and at times coded in "San Junipero," an episode of Black Mirror, through the lens of queer theory. The episode is subversive in the sense that it imagines a somewhat optimistic future for queer individuals, where even though its principal characters die at the end, they are given an alternate afterlife within the simulated reality of San Junipero. The present paper looks at some of the recent scholarships on queer television and attempts to situate "San Junipero" as a queer televisual representation within that framework, in order to enquire whether or not the episode subverts conventional narratives that support heteronormative politics. By drawing upon Gilad Padva's theorization of queer nostalgia, the paper examines how the episode queers the concept of nostalgia by reimagining the 1980s as a time when same-sex couples could get married. It also attempts to read Yorkie's closeted lesbianism with Adrienne Rich's concept of "compulsory heterosexuality". The article further looks at how the episode offers a moderately alternative vision to the "Bury your gays" trope. In recent years several older, serialized TV dramas have experienced surges in popularity among young viewers. The 2020-21 online resurgence of The Sopranos (1999–2007) is perhaps the most compelling example of this. Using the data from a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with fans who watched the show for the first time in 2020-21, this study considers what draws audiences to "old shows" and how they adapt them to contemporary contexts of interpretation. I argue that there are specific considerations that we need to make when investigating contemporary audience receptions of old television. Ultimately, The Sopranos resurgence highlights a new type of "afterlife" for serial drama. Using Miller's work on retextuality I conclude that it is important that we understand the resurgent versions of these TV shows as the new texts they are. Introduction: Despite popular speculation that nostalgic social media use skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, this has yet to be formally investigated in the scientific literature. Methods: Interrupted time series analysis (ITSA) using a segmented regression model was performed to examine the changes in the weekly volume of searches for nostalgic songs on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), as a proxy for nostalgic social media use, before and after the lockdown of Wuhan (signaled the start of the pandemic on a national scale in China). Results: Across the study period (January 1, 2019–February 28, 2021), an immediate and significant increase in nostalgic social media use was observed when the pandemic initially started (95% CI  =  [47314.30, 154969.60], p  <  0.001) compared with the pre-pandemic baseline. Discussion: This study provides empirical evidence for the impact of the pandemic on nostalgic social media use. It also advances our understanding of the increased usage of social media during the pandemic. This article investigates the Marcos golden age narratives on YouTube before the 2022 Philippine presidential elections. Despite evidence of brutality during the Marcos years, many Filipinos reminisce about his tenure as a period of peace and progress, influenced by selective historical accounts propagated through digital media. Expanding Laclau's theory of populism, we identify affective storytelling techniques prominent pro-Marcos YouTubers employ to glorify the Marcos era and examine them to understand how the populist logic of difference and equivalence guides the articulation of a romanticized past and endorses the vilification of elites and Marcos critics. Our analysis underscores the potency of nostalgia in populist and authoritarian politics, demonstrating their capacity to foster a collective yearning for a mythic past and stoke a collective desire for Marcos-brand authoritarianism. Ultimately, this article contributes to understanding the dynamics of historical revisionism and its implications for political discourse and historical consciousness in the digital age, emphasizing the role of YouTubers in shaping political landscapes through nostalgia and the manipulation of social memory. This study aims (1) to investigate the perceived risks (i.e. safety, crime, and social risks) associated with the crowd crush accident, (2) to examine the effects of perceived risks, destination attractiveness, and perceived image of a film destination on anticipated emotions and intentions to visit, and (3) to explore another motivator/barrier of visitor behaviour. The data was collected from 921 respondents who were South Korean residents and were aware of the incident. The close-ended questions from the data collection were analyzed by conducting a quantitative analysis. The results indicated that all dimensions of perceived risks affect negative anticipated emotion, and social risk is also negatively related to positive anticipated emotion. It also revealed that destination attractiveness and the perceived image of a film destination affect positive anticipated emotion, and the perceived image is also negatively related to negative anticipated emotion. In addition, the causal effects of positive/negative anticipated emotions on intentions to visit were identified. Moreover, the study conducted a qualitative analysis to analyze the data collected using open-ended questions. The content analysis showed that factors such as unique restaurants, perceived crowding, reviving the local economy, and nostalgia are associated with intentions to visit Itaewon. Concessions—defined as the urban elements built by Western powers while 'occupying' various parts of the Chinese territory—have recently been granted heritage status by the Chinese national and local authorities. However, in many respects, they are 'dissonant' heritage sites since they are the result of the several-decade-long 'colonial' presence in Tianjin of nine foreign powers. The aim of this study is to understand how former international concessions are featured in museums and interpretation centres in present-day Tianjin. Using an approach that draws on dissonant heritage; literature on postcolonial museums, nostalgia and forgetting mechanisms; and the relationship between museographic narratives and patriotism, this article analyses a corpus of eight museums located in three former international concessions (Marshal Zhang's Mansion, the Former Residence of Ma Zhanshan, the Museum of Modern History of Tianjin, the Five Avenues History Museum, the Museum of the Department Store Quan Ye Chang, Zhang House, the Astor Hotel Museum, the Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall and the Tianjin Museum). The analysis is based on a common observation grid and semidirect interviews conducted with museum staff. The article captures and examines the main narratives from three perspectives: 1) revisiting the concession period as evidence of the beginning of modernity in China, which was a time in which celebrity life stories and the emergence of modern urban elements were praised; 2) considering the concessions as a dreamlike past of 'others' and 'elsewheres' belonging to a 'foreign land' and a context far removed from contemporary life in China, which favours the thematisation and leisure of Western architecture; and 3) selecting and targeting narratives focused on the heroes of the Republic of China (1912–1949) and the People's Republic of China. This paper highlights and further develops how former Western concessions are imbued with a sense of both nostalgia and patriotism and sets out to gain a deeper understanding of the tension between these two attitudes. This article assesses sexuality as a crucial component of Persianate modernity in Alexander Jabbari's The Making of Persianate Modernity. Drawing on the work of Joseph Massad, Afsaneh Najmabadi, and Michel Foucault, Jabbari argues that nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary historians erased premodern Persianate homoerotic desire to craft a "productive" vision of modernity. This erasure participated in a larger epistemic shift that located heteronormative coupling as useful for emerging nation-states. Alongside this erasure, the author points to other ruptures related to sexuality in Persianate modernity, such as the surfacing of a distinctly feminine voice that speaks of desire, the post-1980s adoption of LGBTQ+ identities by many in the modern Persianate world, and the loss of a premodern Islamic approach to romantic love understood as a disease within humoral medicine. Drawing from her own work, Kanner-Botan indicates how continuities in premodern Islamic approaches to love may serve as an additional counterpoint to the epistemic rupture caused by modern approaches to sexuality. Though the ruptures caused by modern approaches to sexuality in the Persianate world merit further research, Jabbari's engagement with rupture counters the book's overall focus on continuity by foregrounding the risks of nostalgia latent within the category of the Persianate itself. This article investigates the role of nostalgia in the meanings and uses of food-inspired (gourmand) fragrances at the point of their emergence in the 1990s and their adaptation by young women and girls in the first decade of the 2000s in the United States. It uses, as an evidentiary basis, news and magazine articles to map the popular reception of these fragrances following their emergence in the 1990s, and closely reads two retrospective works from the 2020s that center the gourmand fragrance Warm Vanilla Sugar by Bath and Body Works to navigate body-based anxieties and desires of young women in narratives of puberty set in the 2000s. Such analysis reveals complicated interplay among food, gender, and consumer culture as well as changing forms of and relationships to food-based nostalgia. Issue Addressed: Nostalgia—the bittersweet reliving of the past—has been linked to social connection and psychological wellbeing. Although food consumption is often an intrinsically social experience, relatively little research has examined how individuals experience and understand how food consumption relates to feelings of nostalgia, food and mood. Methods: In the current study, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with eight Australians from varying cultural backgrounds to explore their experiences with nostalgia, food and mood. Results: Reflexive thematic analysis identified three key themes from the data: (i) The bittersweet experiences of food‐evoked nostalgia—individuals' descriptions of food‐evoked nostalgia and how it impacted their mood both positively and negatively (ii) social connection and identity continuity—participants' description of food‐evoked nostalgia and how this provides an opportunity for social connection and identity continuity throughout life, which positively influences mood, and (iii) the role and relationship of food‐evoked nostalgia and mood—individual descriptions of the important role that nostalgic food plays in their life, in addition to their relationship with food, and how this impacts mood. Conclusions: Understanding the positive component of nostalgic foods allowed individuals to bolster positive mood states with food‐evoked nostalgia, increasing their quality of life. So What?: Understanding the link between food‐evoked nostalgia and mood has significant implications, suggesting that negative mood states altered by nostalgic foods may result in positive mood states. The #nostalgiacores are a series of interrelated hashtags on Instagram and TikTok where users recirculate content from the digital and consumer cultures of the 1990s and 2000s – childhood play centres, dead malls, long-gone toys, and superseded game consoles and phones. In this article, we explore these digital cultures using a critical platform studies approach that involves a combination of network analysis and close textual analysis augmented with purpose-built machine vision tools. We scrape a collection of 359,150 images from Instagram that used one or more of 30 '-cores' hashtags (such as #y2kcore, #webcore and #childhoodcore) that we chose following a period of immersive qualitative investigation of #nostalgiacore scenes on Instagram during 2021 and 2022. 10,000 Instagram images were then randomly selected and processed using a purpose-built unsupervised machine vision model that clusters images together based on their similarities. This research is part of a multi-year project where we develop hybrid digital methods for critically simulating and exploring the interplay between our image-making practices and the algorithmic systems that cluster and curate them. By combining computational approaches with critical platform and cultural studies approaches we speculatively explore both practices of curation and their interplay with the algorithmic classification and recommendation models of digital platforms. Our platform-oriented mode of textual analysis helps us to explore how our digital cultures are both symbolically and technically nostalgic. Instagram users in the #nostalgiacore scene recirculate images from the past as part of practices of critically reflecting on digital platforms and consumer cultures. Nostalgia is a common emotional phenomenon, but its complexity has resulted in a limited understanding and interpretation. This study, grounded in emotional cognitive science, develops a cognitive processing model of nostalgia, encompassing its triggering mechanism, cognitive processes, and effects. The analysis indicates that nostalgia functions as an adaptive mechanism for individuals with deficiencies in belongingness and low-avoidance tendencies, helping them cope with disruptions in self-continuity by forging symbolic social bonds in a distant and idealized timespace. Essentially, nostalgia allows individuals to reconstruct alternate systems of meaning and value, which serve as references for defining self-worth and identity. Popular travel destinations worldwide are often visited because they are historically significant. As such, many historic locations are promoted using historical imagery. This article argues for the critical potential of nostalgia in Pasolini's political aesthetics through a seemingly unlikely subject: his 1968 film and novel Teorema (Theorem). Set in post-war Milan, Theorem depicts the transformative encounter between a godlike visitor and five archetypes of the bourgeois household. After he leaves, they must reckon with his departure. I suggest that Pasolini's formal and theoretical interest in nostalgia is crucial to understanding Theorem's aesthetic invocation of the sacred, which the film stages through an interplay of presence and absence in bodies, spaces and temporalities. Unpacking the etymological roots algos ('pain') and nostos ('return'), my reading forges intertextual connections within Pasolini's oeuvre while also suggesting that Pasolini's oblique, materially rooted nostalgia encourages a re-evaluation of the critical productivity of this term more broadly. The Club, a Turkish series exclusively produced for Netflix, challenges the official historical narrative of modern Turkey by depicting the experiences of minorities on the brink of the country’s political upheaval. It highlights the state’s complex relations with its minorities and historical events that are often silenced in the official historical narrative. This study looks at how Turkey’s dark pasts pertaining to its religious minorities are portrayed in The Club and the ways in which its audience respond to these dark pasts. It argues that the audience of The Club recreates the silences about the past, resulting in the denial or rationalization of state violence, while emphasizing a nostalgic multi-cultural past. This paper reads Bad Bunny’s gender performance as queer in his album X100PRE. Utilising methodology proposed by Juana María Rodríguez, we focus on “queer gestures” rather than “categories of identification” to argue that Bad Bunny experiments with a markedly queer gender fluidity. We first explore the queer affect of nostalgia in the song “Como antes” and Bad Bunny’s Instagram posts, then investigate the role of fashion in the “¿Quién tú eres?” video, using Umberto Eco’s approach to clothing as a code that communicates gender, power, and social distinction. Finally, we examine how Bad Bunny’s gender performance challenges normative masculinity in the United States from the perspective of a racialised, colonised Puerto Rican subject. Nostalgia has reemerged in recent years in response to political, environmental, and other instabilities. This study uses transcripts from fifty-five in-depth interviews with three groups of forest workers to examine the experience of nostalgia in forest management. This takes multiple forms, including nostalgia for place, for work, and for a “pristine” landscape of the past. While the former two are prominent among loggers and, to a lesser extent, governmental workers, the latter type emerges primarily among members of environmental organizations. All three types have implications for the ways people construct their own identities, feelings toward others, and beliefs about how people ought to interact with the forest. They also reflect disruptions to environmental knowledge. Ultimately, nostalgia should be understood as a manifestation of the things that people long for in their current circumstances, most notably, belonging, purpose, and harmony with the landscape. This paper explores how some older residents in B Town, a residential estate in northern Singapore, engage in community building through their 'serious leisure' and 'devotee work' participation in a resident landscaper program. Using data from ethnographic fieldwork conducted from February to November 2020 with participants aged from 60 to 81, I analyze how they built connections with each other, and the wider B Town community, through their participation. Particularly, I examine how the shared identity marker of being former farmers in now-evicted kampungs (villages) before the 1980s drew them together, and informed their continued involvement as resident landscapers. The 'kampung spirit' that they built up through the program enabled the construction of not only social connections, but also exclusionary mechanisms that prevented more older adults from engaging in the activities. This paper investigates how engagement with the Ugandan Baakisimba folk dance tradition enables cultural resilience and identity continuity for members of the Ugandan diaspora community in Trondheim, Norway. Through an immersive seven-month ethnographic study involving participant observation and interviews, the findings reveal baakisimba's versatility as a vehicle for intergenerational transmission of intangible heritage, as a tool for strengthening social cohesion, and providing a conduit for productively processing nostalgic sentiments. Analysis of a baakisimba performance during a baptism ceremony demonstrates the dance form's effectiveness in shaping communal belonging and sparking continuity with Ugandan cultural roots despite migration's ruptures. We investigated the effects of positive/negative emotions towards autobiographical memories on impressions of the conversation and conversation partner during memory sharing in a reminiscence therapy setting. Fifty‐six older (Mage = 69.3) and 60 younger (Mage = 20.7) participants' net emotional tendency (positive/negative) towards autobiographical memories and depressive symptoms were evaluated using validated rating scales. Positive/positive and positive/negative age‐matched random pairs shared a nostalgic memory through free conversation. Participants with a negative emotional tendency towards autobiographical memories in positive/negative pairs tended to feel less "easy" about the conversation. Participants with a positive emotional tendency towards autobiographical memories in positive/negative pairs had a more negative impression of their partners. Our data provide insight into the relationship between net emotional tendency towards autobiographical memories and depression and suggest that an individual's net emotional tendency towards autobiographical memories potentially affects the outcome of group reminiscence therapy. Although rapid economic growth can produce various positive outcomes, the fast-paced society that inevitably accompanies it often results in longer working hours and higher stress levels, leading to reduced participation in sport activities among employees. To better understand this phenomenon, we aimed to explore the constraints and experiences of adult workers. We collected data from adult workers in Singapore who desired to participate in sport activities but were unable to do so due to various constraints. A total of 10 individuals were purposefully selected for interviews. This study identified four key themes: (a) factors causing the reduction of sport participation opportunities, (b) changes in sport activities and satisfaction, (c) nostalgic feelings associated with sport activities, and (d) the role of nostalgia in enhancing sport involvement. The findings of this study suggest the possibility of adapting the conceptual model of nostalgia to sport activities, as well as identifying four factors that hinder employees from engaging in sport activities. Contrary to an apolitical, pessimistic, and non-feminist perception of Witi Ihimaera's work, this article contends that his early novel The Matriarch (1986) and its sequel The Dream Swimmer (1997) frame Māori communities as an ancient, patriarchal space in need of revision to accommodate women. Reconsidering the role of tribalism and Māori utopian and cyclical land narratives, this study argues that the confessional male narrator of both novels, Tamatea Mahana, learns to embrace a matrilineal genealogy not only of powerful Māori women leaders of chiefly status, but also of charismatic women in the shadow, like his mother Tiana. Beyond Pākehā imperial democracy and Māori "male utopias of domination", Tamatea and the exceptional gallery of warrior-matriarchs implement a peculiar and controversial retrotopia — a return to the prematurely buried grand ideas of the past — which, even when dangerously resonating with nostalgia, aims at an open-ended model of democracy through spiral temporality. 1 A predominantly decolonizing theory and methodology is used, drawing on Kaupapa Māori and Mana Wāhine theories. Childhood is a universal trope in literature, where the figure of the child engenders feelings of pity, affection or horror in readers. This article will examine two novels — A Strange and Sublime Address by Amit Chaudhuri ([1991] 2016) and The Blue Bedspread by Raj Kamal Jha ([1995] 2009) — in order to explore how narratives about childhood in the city of Calcutta, one nostalgic and the other traumatic, deploy the figure of the child within the bhadralok milieu, to convey a nostalgic mood for the idea of Bengali middle class identity. This article engages with the possibility of how nostalgia for an apparently declining middle class is glossed by a seemingly interiorized reflection of bhadralok domesticity juxtaposed with a bleaker self-aware representation, seen through the eyes of children. The commercial viability of Gurinder Chadha's Viceroy's House (2017) and Stephen Frears' Victoria and Abdul (2017) can be attributed to their effective use of heritage film elements to offer romanticized versions of British rule. Decoding the teleological intent behind these romanticized versions, this article contends that the chosen films promote nostalgia in response to the postimperial melancholia that Britain is experiencing in the contemporary period. Exploring the cinematic recreation of nostalgia, this article analyses the spatial, material, and racial aspects of Victoria and Abdul and Viceroy's House. The spatial analysis highlights the cinematography used to depict heritage space to commemorate British tradition, the material examination focuses on colonial gifts of economic mobility and political emancipation bestowed on the colonized, and the racial analysis focuses on Muslim stereotyping through exoticism and animalization to reinforce British pride in civilizing the "inferior race". An explication of these cinematic and narrative elements highlights the films' invocation of nostalgia for an idealized past through a return to a closed epoch of empire that uncritically and dangerously reproduces ideologies of British cultural and racial superiority. Furthermore, this invocation of nostalgia works to glorify British historical origins and strengthen national cohesion in order to allay collective anxieties about the abject loss of the empire's global recognition in the wake of Brexit. Life-writing by punks has grown at a remarkable rate and constitutes a significant new addition to the canon of punk cultural production that deserves an equal place alongside music, fashion, and zines. Punk has always sought to document itself in the form of recordings, film, photography, fanzines, and video. It is time to add memoirs to these archival impulses and examine how punk culture is now mediated and sustained by autobiography. Whereas punk life writing might be dismissed as so many nostalgic trips down memory lane, this article begins from the premise that writing about a life involves more than nostalgia. Considering punk memoirs as works that offer new ways of thinking about a life attached to punk, this article surveys a broad range of punk memoirs and asks questions that reframe some punk scholarship by emphasizing how individuals live within and outside of punk simultaneously. What are some of the dominant features of punk memoirs? What kinds of interventions do they make? How do they introduce and develop particular ways of documenting and thinking about punk culture and its legacies? How does life writing about the past transform punk in the present? What ways of thinking, lines of inquiry, understanding, and feelings do memoirs establish and examine as central to the thought of punk, in particular, and the study of culture more broadly? Nostalgia evoked through various experiences (e.g., scents, music) has been shown to enhance emotional well-being and reduce social pain. We propose that reading a familiar book similarly can elicit nostalgia, and provide emotional benefits through narrative transportation beyond that of reading a new book. We tested the relationship between reading new versus familiar books, nostalgia, narrative transportation, and indices of social connectedness. Participants were randomly assigned to re-read a favorite novel, read a new novel of interest, or read a set of newspaper articles. Re-reading elicited greater nostalgia and social connectedness than reading a new novel or newspaper. Narrative transportation and nostalgia fully mediated the effect of reading condition on social connectedness. Retro jerseys across many sports have grown increasingly popular in recent years and previous research has given credence to their use by sport organizations. Specifically, recent research has found the freshness and outdatedness of retro jerseys to impact consumer attitudes (Dwyer et al., 2020). Although nostalgia is at the core of literature on retro merchandise, scholars have yet to examine various types of nostalgia and their impact on retro merchandise. Therefore, the current study sought to assess the influence of nostalgia -- and specifically its three dimensions personal, historical, and collective -- on consumer attitudes and purchase intentions. An online sample of 434 participants were surveyed and results exhibited mixed findings, with the three dimensions of nostalgia varying in impact toward the outcomes of team attitude and purchase intentions. Also, examination of the role of age, income, and length of time as a fan were also explored with results exhibiting differences based upon consumer income and length of time as a fan. Although the results varied based on type of nostalgia and consumer outcome, it was clear that nostalgia plays a role in consumers' feelings toward their favorite team's merchandise.
