PREHISTORIC dwellings , *MESOLITHIC Period , *PIT houses , *TENTS , *QUANTITATIVE research - Abstract
A quantitative analysis of 150 Mesolithic dwellings in Norway, dated to between 9500 and 4000 cal bc, forms the core of a chronological and regional study based on fifteen variables, including floor size and shape, floor modifications and wall features, internal hearths, numbers and distribution of artefacts, traces of maintenance or reuse, and the number of dwellings per site. The study identifies a distinct change in dwelling traditions between the Early and Middle Mesolithic, around 8000 cal bc. Tents are typical of the Early Mesolithic, whereas remains of pit houses dominate in all later phases of the Mesolithic. The study also sheds light on variability in dwelling traditions after 8000 cal bc, which appears to relate to changes in social structure, growing territoriality, and regional differences. CHILDREN'S health , *MENTAL illness , *PARENT-child relationships , *FAMILY relations , *FAMILY conflict , *RELATIONSHIP quality - Abstract
This study investigated potential differences in mental health among children living in sole physical custody (SPC), asymmetric joint physical custody (JPC), and symmetric JPC; and it tested whether children's age moderated the association between physical custody arrangements and children's mental health. Using data from the Family Models in Germany (FAMOD) and Norwegian Dynamics of Family Conflict (FAMC) studies, we estimated OLS regression models for children aged 2 to 14. In the German sample, children in asymmetric JPC had fewer mental health problems than children in SPC. However, this difference disappeared when controlling for various background variables, including the quality of parent-child relationships. Additionally, children's age moderated the association between physical custody arrangements and children's mental health problems, with increasing age being related to fewer mental health problems in asymmetric JPC. This association remained even after controlling for the background variables. In the Norwegian sample, no differences were found in children's mental health across physical custody arrangements; nor did children's age moderate the association. The results of this study emphasize that there may be cultural differences in how children's mental health is related to their physical custody arrangements. Furthermore, there are modest indications that asymmetric JPC may be related to better mental health among older children in Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the construction details of the mounds erected over large Viking ship burials in Norway and shows that they form an integral part of mortuary practice. Moreover, elements of the construction that are potentially unique to this type of monument are repeated, suggesting a knowledge of the properties of materials and their inter-relationships within the mounds. Here, referencing between and within the mounds is considered alongside the connections these soils, sediments, and other earth-sourced materials contained in relation to the cultural landscape. The selection of such materials and the location of the burials in the landscape were fundamental to the creation of a performative scene for the burial rites, and for establishing a desired, interlinked, social memory. The point of departure for this article is the excavation of two burial mounds and a trackway system in Bamble, Telemark, Norway. One of the mounds overlay ard marks, which led to speculation as to whether the site was ritually ploughed or whether it contained the remains of an old field system. Analysis of the archaeometric data indicated that the first mound was related to a field system, while the second was constructed 500–600 years later. The first mound was probably built to demonstrate the presence of a kin and its social norms, while these norms were renegotiated when the second mound was raised in the Viking Age. This article emphasizes that the ritual and profane aspects were closely related: mound building can be a ritualized practice intended to legitimize ownership and status by the reuse of domestic sites in the landscape. Further examples from Scandinavia indicate that this is a common, but somewhat overlooked, practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper analyses the construction of Norwegian couples’ sexuality through the study of a publicly financed and organized relationship course called “Living Well Together” (“Godt samliv”). Established in 2005, the relationship course aimed at first-time parent couples is offered free of charge by municipal health centers. Scrutiny of national policy documents and political debate, and the course handbooks presented to couples, makes visible a particular Norwegian discourse on sexuality which stresses gender equality and neutrality and ideas of inclusive democratization. New parents are advised to make active efforts to maintain a loving, lasting relationship and sexuality, for the sake of the children. The idea of sex implied by this couples relationship policy is based on what may be described as a “duty of spontaneity”, presented as a work both parents should undertake in order to achieve a stable and healthy relationship. We argue, however, that the inclusive rhetoric of diversity that characterises this public form of Norwegian Sexuality has its limitations, and that certain forms of intimacy and sexuality are excluded from this discourse

The paper addresses the issue of sexual citizenship in Europe today by looking at how tolerance is configured in debates about Islam and homosexuality in Norway. Drawing on Wendy Brown’s Regulating Aversion. Tolerance in the Age of Identity and Empire, the paper argues that tolerance discourse is central to the production of the kind of citizens that contemporary liberal democracies require. Tolerance to homosexuality could be seen as a political instrument to legitimate nation-state citizenship on the one hand, and justify an international civilizing mission on the other.

What connection links biopower and racism? How do schools as institutions partake in producing citizens and minorities? This article engages with some of the often overlooked forms of exclusion and belonging that take place among minority youths within educational settings. It explores the combined uses of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and a critique of biopower in understanding the educational experiences of Somali immigrants in Norway and the United States. Based on findings made, the article suggests that covet forms of racism are often at play where biopower is operative, as when schools instil particular forms of diversity.

This article examines the process of setting up the Tromsø city toll, whose very late implementation (2021) raises questions in a country that has made environmental exemplarity a lever for global integration. The article offers a geo-historic reading of this process from a center/periphery prism, discussing the reluctancy of local residents to sustainable land-use planning and their singular bond to car transport. At a time when, elsewhere in Europe, the reconfiguring of centre/periphery relationships is marked by the empowerment of local states in the face of central state supervision, the establishment of the Tromsø city toll is distinctive in that it maintains a strong duality between the southern centrality and its northern periphery. The establishment of the city toll symbolizes the end of the municipality’s State-granted special regime, and reflects Tromsø’s changing status, from the country’s Northern periphery to the arctic projection of Oslo.

This article discusses the chronology and nature of the earliest Viking activity, based on a group of early burials from Norway containing Insular metalwork. By focusing on the geographical distribution of this material and applying the concept of locational and social knowledge, the importance of establishing cognitive landscapes to facilitate the Viking expansion is highlighted. It is argued that the first recorded Viking attacks were only possible after a phase in which Norse seafarers had acquired the necessarily level of a priori environmental knowledge needed to move in new seascapes and coastal environments. This interaction model opens the possibility that some of the early Insular finds from Norway may represent pre-Lindisfarne exploration voyages, carried out by seafarers along the sailing route of Nordvegr.

Although policy‐makers and scholars have directed increasing attention towards collaborative innovation and knowledge development between frontline agencies and workers and other stakeholders such as citizens and researchers, empirical research has not focused on the (varying) assessment of collaborators regarding what knowledge is "appropriate" to develop. In this article, we examine such knowledge assessments by drawing on a comparative case study of two local innovation projects conducted by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) in a four‐year service innovation programme. Although they responded to the same call, the projects involved development of two very distinct types of knowledge; one dealt with practice‐based knowledge and the other with evidence‐based knowledge. We show that whereas the former knowledge type was contested and difficult to transform into practice, the latter prompted few (if any) challenges and was implemented on a relatively large scale. These two projects point to the possible existence of a hierarchy of knowledge in labour and welfare services, where evidence‐based forms of knowledge and methods are regarded as more legitimate and appropriate than forms of knowledge placed "lower" in the hierarchy. We discuss the reasons for and implications of this apparent hierarchy of knowledge for frontline labour and welfare services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Saga Oseberg, a full-scale reconstruction of the Oseberg ship, has been tested using different approaches. First, the principles employed for handling traditional square-rigged boats from Norway were applied. The ship manoeuvred badly, and this was taken as proof that the reconstruction was incorrect. Subsequently, a new programme of test sailing was undertaken using a more investigative approach to the full-scale reconstruction, resulting in a marked improvement in the ship’s performance. This paper will present an outline of the methods used, posing critical questions as to the application of more recent sailing traditions to the handling of archaeological reconstructions: is it possible to set one’s preconceptions aside to let replicas ‘speak’ for themselves?

- Abstract
Three unusual Viking-age swords of rare shape were found in Scandinavia: In 1968 two swords were recovered in a woman's grave in Finland. One of these weapons is so curious that it cannot be matched with any other sword type known so far and it remains a unique piece to this day. Only after an excavation in Norway in 2011 did a related find of a sword come to light; it too is a rare specimen. Not only do these artefacts raise questions about their former use, the grave goods that accompanied them also give cause to discuss the social status of the deceased and their possible warrior activities. In one case we may even be dealing with a female warrior, respectively a participant in a campaign to England. The swords' rare forms not only make them highly interesting from a typological perspective but they also uniquely illustrate the transition from paganism to Christianity during the eleventh century. Relationships between soil C and N stocks and soil formation, climate, and vegetation were investigated in a gridded database connected to the National Forest Inventory in Norway. For mineral soil orders, C and N stocks were estimated to be 11.1-19.3 kg C·m−2 and 0.41-0.78 kg N·m−2, respectively, declining in the following order: Gleysols > Podzols > Brunisols > Regosols. Organic peat-type soils stored, on average, 31.3 kg C·m−2 and 1.10 kg N·m−2, whereas shallow Organic folisols stored, on average, 10.2 kg C·m−2 and 0.34 kg N·m−2. For Norway's 120 000 km2 of forest, the total of soil C stocks was estimated to be 1.83 Gt C, with a 95% CI of 1.71-1.95 Gt C. Podzolic soils comprise the largest soil group and store approximately 50% of the forest soil C. Sixty percent of the soil C stock in Podzolic soils was stored in the mineral soil, increasing with temperature and precipitation. Poorly drained soil types store approximately 47% of the total forest soil C in Norway. Soils with water saturation have large C stocks mainly in the forest floor, suggesting that they are more susceptible to forest management and environmental change. Soil C stocks under pine and spruce forests were similar, although pine forests had larger C stocks in the forest floor, while spruce forests had the highest C stocks in the mineral soil compartment. C stocks in the forest floor increase from dry to moist ground vegetation, while ground vegetation nutrient classes reflect better the C and N stocks in the mineral soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

«Pharaonic circumcision», a type of female genital cutting creating a closure of the feminine genitalia, is associated with key cultural values related to gender and sexuality: virginity and virtue for women, and virility, sexual pleasure and paternity for men. To meet these values, infibulations must be performed at a young age and kept intact until marriage when they must be partially re-opened to enable sexual intercourse, and further opened at childbirth. Many complications that relate to infibulation and the pain associated with traditional defibulation can be significantly reduced by undergoing surgical defibulation, a procedure through which the infibulation to some extent can be undone. However, while surgical defibulation has been made widely available in Norway as in many other countries of immigration, the uptake is low. This paper explores some of the cultural values and perceptions that cause the resistance found to this surgery, and discusses how these perceptions can be overcome.

The implementation of a car-free city center in Oslo seems to reflect, at first sight, the remarkable commitment of the Norwegian capital to the preservation of the environment and the fight against climate change and CO2 emissions, thereby highlighting once again a kind of Nordic exemplarity in terms of urban ecology. However, once analysed, the underlying motives of the project, as well as its operational applications on public space, appear to be far remote from environmental concerns. Phasing cars out of the city-center turns out to only be a mean for the Europeanisation of the capital —adopting the urban codes of “Continental” Europe in order for Oslo to reach beyond its peripherality and fuel its European integration.

This article offers both a description of the main characteristics of an ongoing research project in Norway and, through the presentation of an example, an illustration of the way developmental research is understood in this research. The project is rooted within a theoretical approach where the notions of co-learning and community of inquiry are central. Relevant issues emerging from this project are presented and discussed through this article, especially the relationship between knowledge arising from practice and knowledge arising from research.

In this article, we examine aspects of the Postglacial colonization processes that took place in central Norway during the Early Mesolithic (c. 9500–8000 calbc). The distribution of sites from this period shows that the colonizers approached and exploited two very different landscapes and resource situations—from archipelagic to alpine. Based on twelve artefact assemblages from central Norway we investigate how colonizing populations met the challenge posed by varying ecozones. Did they organize their settlements and technologies in similar ways or did they modify sites and activities in relation to the different locations? The aspects studied are site organization, artefact composition, projectiles, and lithic raw material use. It appears that the sites are of a similar size and structure across ecozones. Apart from some variations in tool composition, there is no evidence in the lithic material for any technical adaptation towards specific ecozones. We conclude that using a standard, generalized lithic technology, combined with high mobility and small group size, enabled the colonizing groups to overcome the risks and difficulties associated with settling and seeking out resources in new and unknown landscapes. This article discusses the coexistence between the Lutheran State Church and the Lutheran lay movement in Norway. Despite strong conflicts over theology and Church order, the lay movement, whose stronghold is the western periphery, has generally chosen to remain within the Church. This phenomenon of hostile cohabitation is analysed in relation to the theoretical framework developed by Emmanuel Todd, who argues that European regions are highly divergent when it comes to anthropological patterns and dispositions. One of the main anthropological fault lines separates west and south-east Norway. In adapting Todd’s perspective to a well known debate, the author reveals new insights into the social rationales for the behaviour of the lay movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FAMILIES , *GENDER , *LIFE partners - Abstract
This research investigates individual expectations of economic support from different sources: partner, family, friends and formal help. Using data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) the study compares Norway, as representative of the Scandinavian model, and Spain, as representative of the Mediterranean model. The findings confirm that family plays a more important role as a source of economic support in Spain while formal help is far more important in Norway. Moreover, gender and life course have a significant impact on expectations of economic support in both countries, although the differences do not go in the same direction. Women expect more financial support from their partners than men do in Norway, while Spanish women tend to rely more on support from their families. Regarding life course, although expectations of economic support from the family are higher for young and older people in both countries, the life-cycle effect is stronger in Spain. Highlights: • The epoch of the Anthropocene, a period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment, has witnessed a decline in oxygen concentrations and an expansion of oxygen-depleted environments in both coastal and open ocean systems since the middle of the 20th century. • This review paper provides a synthesis of system-specific drivers of low oxygen in a range of case studies representing marine systems in the open ocean, on continental shelves, in enclosed seas and in the coastal environment. • Identification of similar and contrasting responses within and across system types and corresponding oxygen regimes is shown to be informative both in understanding and isolating key controlling processes and provides a sound basis for predicting change under anticipated future conditions. • Case studies were selected to achieve a balance in system diversity and global coverage. • Each case study describes system attributes, including the present-day oxygen environment and known trends in oxygen concentrations over time. • Central to each case study is the identification of the physical and biogeochemical processes that determine oxygen concentrations through the tradeoff between ventilation and respiration. • Spatial distributions of oxygen and time series of oxygen data provide the opportunity to identify trends in oxygen availability and have allowed various drivers of low oxygen to be distinguished through correlative and causative relationships. • Deoxygenation results from a complex interplay of hydrographic and biogeochemical processes and the superposition of these processes, some additive and others subtractive, makes attribution to any particular driver challenging. • System-specific models are therefore required to achieve a quantitative understanding of these processes and of the feedbacks between processes at varying scales. Abstract: The epoch of the Anthropocene, a period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment, has witnessed a decline in oxygen concentrations and an expansion of oxygen-depleted environments in both coastal and open ocean systems since the middle of the 20th century. This paper provides a review of system-specific drivers of low oxygen in a range of case studies representing marine systems in the open ocean, on continental shelves, in enclosed seas and in the coastal environment. Identification of similar and contrasting responses within and across system types and corresponding oxygen regimes is shown to be informative both in understanding and isolating key controlling processes and provides a sound basis for predicting change under anticipated future conditions. Case studies were selected to achieve a balance in system diversity and global coverage. Each case study describes system attributes, including the present-day oxygen environment and known trends in oxygen concentrations over time. Central to each case study is the identification of the physical and biogeochemical processes that determine oxygen concentrations through the tradeoff between ventilation and respiration. Spatial distributions of oxygen and time series of oxygen data provide the opportunity to identify trends in oxygen availability and have allowed various drivers of low oxygen to be distinguished through correlative and causative relationships. Deoxygenation results from a complex interplay of hydrographic and biogeochemical processes and the superposition of these processes, some additive and others subtractive, makes attribution to any particular driver challenging. System-specific models are therefore required to achieve a quantitative understanding of these processes and of the feedbacks between processes at varying scales.
