Today Niagara offers opportunities for almost every type of visitor, including the most enthusiastic ecotourist, the historian, thrill-seeking teens and families simply looking to entertain or divert their small children. As a destination it has survived ongoing change, in part due to government initiatives and stewardship of some of the fundamental resources, combined with the ability of the private sector to exploit them. This paper contributes to recent postcolonial debates about the cartography of European expansion and its implications for constructing North American landscapes. It does so by moving beyond a pure deconstructionist critique of mapping by drawing on range of theoretical literature that encourages a view of cartography as being inextricably tied to the social relations of production and consumption. In particular, it emphasizes the point that maps have social lives not necessarily different in kind from other forms of material culture. Drawing on the cartographic creation of the northwest, the argument develops through examining the social and material dimensions of map making and its afterlife. The public record of Major Stephen H. Long's 1819–1820 exploration of the American north-west, Account of an expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, compiled by Edwin James, contains valuable contributions regarding the natural landscapes, native peoples and wildlife of a mostly unexplored region of the American west compiled from the notes of some of America's foremost naturalists, and it includes the first descriptions of 67 new species. The original plan was to publish the Account in Philadelphia and London simultaneously, yet these two editions differ substantially in ways that are relevant to the taxonomic contributions in the work. It is generally assumed that the Philadelphia edition was published in early January 1823 and was available first, but little substantive evidence has been presented to support its priority over the London edition. Review of contemporary correspondence and periodicals indicates the Philadelphia edition was available and for sale on 31 December 1822, whereas the London edition was available in late February 1823. As previously assumed by most sources, the Philadelphia edition has priority of publication and is the authority for most species names. Nearly a thousand years ago, the most sophisticated and powerful community in the Western Hemisphere north of Mexico flourished in the Mississippi River's rich bottomland. Their City of the Sun included at least 120 mounds, crowned at the center by Monks Mound, 30 meters tall and covering over six hectares, the largest earthen platform in North America. Most of Alaska's human population lives within 150 kilometers of Prince William Sound, a vast and scenic landscape of estuaries, glaciers and islands supporting a diversity of birds and wildlife.
