Search

Microlensing is a unique tool, capable of detecting the 'cold' planets between 1-10 AU from their host stars, and even unbound 'free-floating' planets. This regime has been poorly sampled to date owing to the limitations of alternative planet-finding methods, but a watershed in discoveries is anticipated in the near future thanks to the planned microlensing surveys of WFIRST-AFTA and Euclid s Extended Mission. Of the many challenges inherent in these missions, the modeling of microlensing events will be of primary importance, yet is often time consuming, complex and perceived as a daunting barrier to participation in the field. The large scale of future survey data products will require thorough but efficient modeling software, but unlike other areas of exoplanet research, microlensing currently lacks a publicly-available, well-documented package to conduct this type of analysis. We present first version 1.0 of pyLIMA: Python Lightcurve Identification and Microlensing Analysis. This software is written in Python and uses existing packages as much as possible, to make it widely accessible. In this paper, we describe the overall architecture of the software and the core modules for modeling single-lens events. To verify the performance of this software, we use it to model both real datasets from events published in the literature and generated test data, produced using pyLIMA s simulation module. Results demonstrate that pyLIMA is an efficient tool for microlensing modeling. We will expand pyLIMA to consider more complex phenomena in the following papers., Comment: AJ, accepted

Combining stellar occultation observations probing Pluto's atmosphere from 1988 to 2013 and models of energy balance between Pluto's surface and atmosphere, we conclude that Pluto's atmosphere does not collapse at any point in its 248-year orbit. The occultation results show an increasing atmospheric pressure with time in the current epoch, a trend present only in models with a high thermal inertia and a permanent N2 ice cap at Pluto's north rotational pole., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) is a young organization dedicated to time-domain observations at optical and (potentially) near-IR wavelengths. To this end, LCOGT is constructing a world-wide network of telescopes, including the two 2m Faulkes telescopes, as many as 17 x 1m telescopes, and as many as 23 x 40cm telescopes. These telescopes initially will be outfitted for imaging and (excepting the 40cm telescopes) spectroscopy at wavelengths between the atmospheric UV cutoff and the roughly 1-micron limit of silicon detectors. Since the first of LCOGT's 1m telescopes are now being deployed, we lay out here LCOGT's scientific goals and the requirements that these goals place on network architecture and performance, we summarize the network's present and projected level of development, and we describe our expected schedule for completing it. In the bulk of the paper, we describe in detail the technical approaches that we have adopted to attain the desired performance. In particular, we discuss our choices for the number and location of network sites, for the number and sizes of telescopes, for the specifications of the first generation of instruments, for the software that will schedule and control the network's telescopes and reduce and archive its data, and for the structure of the scientific and educational programs for which the network will provide observations., Comment: 59 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. Measuring the relative mass contributions of luminous and dark matter in spiral galaxies is important for understanding their formation and evolution. The combination of a galaxy rotation curve and strong lensing is a powerful way to break the disk-halo degeneracy that is inherent in each of the methods individually. We present an analysis of the 10-image radio spiral lens B1933+503 at z_l=0.755, incorporating (1) new global VLBI observations, (2) new adaptive-optics assisted K-band imaging, (3) new spectroscopic observations for the lens galaxy rotation curve and the source redshift. We construct a three-dimensionally axisymmetric mass distribution with 3 components: an exponential profile for the disk, a point mass for the bulge, and an NFW profile for the halo. The mass model is simultaneously fitted to the kinematics and the lensing data. The NFW halo needs to be oblate with a flattening of a/c=0.33^{+0.07}_{-0.05} to be consistent with the radio data. This suggests that baryons are effective at making the halos oblate near the center. The lensing and kinematics analysis probe the inner ~10 kpc of the galaxy, and we obtain a lower limit on the halo scale radius of 16 kpc (95% CI). The dark matter mass fraction inside a sphere with a radius of 2.2 disk scale lengths is f_{DM,2.2}=0.43^{+0.10}_{-0.09}. The contribution of the disk to the total circular velocity at 2.2 disk scale lengths is 0.76^{+0.05}_{-0.06}, suggesting that the disk is marginally submaximal. The stellar mass of the disk from our modeling is log_{10}(M_{*}/M_{sun}) = 11.06^{+0.09}_{-0.11} assuming that the cold gas contributes ~20% to the total disk mass. In comparison to the stellar masses estimated from stellar population synthesis models, the stellar initial mass function of Chabrier is preferred to that of Salpeter by a probability factor of 7.2., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, minor revisions based on referee's comments, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a new gravitational lens system from the CLASS survey, CLASS B0631+519. VLA, MERLIN and VLBA observations show a doubly-imaged radio core, a doubly-imaged lobe and a second lobe that is probably quadruply-imaged. The maximum image separation is 1.16 arcseconds. The VLBA resolves the most magnified image of the flat-spectrum radio core into a number of sub-components spread across approximately 20 milli-arcseconds. Optical and near-infrared imaging with the ACS and NICMOS cameras on the HST show that there are two galaxies along the line of sight to the lensed source, as was previously discovered by optical spectroscopy. The nearer galaxy at z=0.0896 is a small blue irregular, while the more distant galaxy at z=0.6196 is an elliptical type and appears to contribute most of the lensing effect. The host galaxy of the lensed source is visible in NICMOS imaging as a set of arcs that form an almost complete Einstein ring. Mass modelling using non-parametric techniques can reproduce the ring and indicates that the irregular galaxy has a (localised) effect on the flux density distribution in the Einstein ring at the 5-10% level., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present observations of CLASS B2108+213, the widest separation gravitational lens system discovered by the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey. Radio imaging using the VLA at 8.46 GHz and MERLIN at 5 GHz shows two compact components separated by 4.56 arcsec with a faint third component in between which we believe is emission from a lensing galaxy. 5-GHz VLBA observations reveal milliarcsecond-scale structure in the two lensed images that is consistent with gravitational lensing. Optical emission from the two lensed images and two lensing galaxies within the Einstein radius is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Furthermore, an optical gravitational arc, associated with the strongest lensed component, has been detected. Surrounding the system are a number of faint galaxies which may help explain the wide image separation. We present new observations of the gravitational lens system CLASS B0128+437. HST observations detect a very faint, extended object in I-band with no emission from the lensed images visible; no detection at all is made in V-band. The lens system is detected with much higher signal to noise with UKIRT in K-band, but the resolution is not sufficient to allow the lensed images and the lens galaxy to be separated. A careful astrometric calibration, however, suggests that the peak of the infrared emission corresponds to the two merging images A and B and therefore that the lensed images dominate at infrared wavelengths. The new radio data consist of VLBI radio images at three frequencies, 2.3, 5 and 8.4GHz, made with the VLBA and the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. The lensed source consists of three well-defined sub-components embedded in a more extended jet. Due to the fact that the sub-components have different spectral indices it is possible to determine which part of each image corresponds to the same source sub-component. Our main finding is that one of the images, B, looks very different to the others, there being no obvious division into separate sub-components and the image being apparently both broader and smoother. This is a consequence we believe of scatter-broadening in the ISM of the lensing galaxy. The large number of multiply-imaged source sub-components also provide an abundance of modelling constraints and we have attempted to fit an SIE+external shear model to the data, as well as utilising the novel method of Evans & Witt. It proves difficult in both cases, however, to obtain a satisfactory fit which strongly suggests the presence of sub-structure in the mass distribution of the lensing galaxy, perhaps of the kind that is predicted by CDM theories of structure formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13 pages, 8 figures. The Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) is an international collaborative program which has obtained high-resolution radio images of over 10000 flat-spectrum radio sources in order to create the largest and best studied statistical sample of radio-loud gravitationally lensed systems. With this survey, combined with detailed studies of the lenses found therein, constraints can be placed on the expansion rate, matter density, and dark energy (e.g. cosmological constant, quintessence) content of the Universe that are complementary to and independent of those obtained through other methods. CLASS is aimed at identifying lenses where multiple images are formed from compact flat-spectrum radio sources, which should be easily identifiable in the radio maps. Because CLASS is radio-based, dust obscuration in lensing galaxies is not a factor, and the relative insensitivity of the instrument to environmental conditions leads to nearly uniform sensitivity and resolution over the entire survey. In four observing seasons from 1994-1999, CLASS has observed 13783 radio sources with the VLA at 8.4 GHz at 0.2 arcsecond resolution. When combined with the JVAS survey, the CLASS sample contains over 16,000 images. A complete sample of 11685 flat-spectrum sources was observed, selected from GB6 catalogue at 4.85 GHz and the NVSS at 1.4 GHz. We report the final results of the search for gravitationally lensed flat-spectrum radio sources found in the combination of CLASS (Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey) and JVAS (Jodrell-Bank VLA Astrometric Survey). VLA observations of 16,503 sources have been made, resulting in the largest sample of arcsec-scale lens systems available. Contained within the 16,503 sources is a complete sample of 11,685 sources having two-point spectral indices between 1.4 and 5 GHz flatter than -0.5 and 5 GHz flux densities $\geq$30 mJy. A subset of 8,958 sources form a well-defined statistical sample suitable for analysis of the lens statistics. We describe the systematic process by which 149 candidate lensed sources were picked from the statistical sample on the basis of possessing multiple compact components in the 0.2 arcsec-resolution VLA maps. Candidates were followed up with 0.05 arcsec resolution MERLIN and 0.003 arcsec VLBA observations at 5 GHz and rejected as lens systems if they failed well-defined surface brightness and/or morphological tests. Twelve are double-image systems, nine are four-image systems and one is a six-image system. We report the discovery of a new gravitational lens system from the CLASS survey. Radio observations with the VLA, the WSRT and MERLIN show that the radio source B0850+054 is comprised of two compact components with identical spectra, a separation of 0.7 arcsec and a flux density ratio of 6:1. VLBA observations at 5 GHz reveal structures that are consistent with the gravitational lens hypothesis. The brighter of the two images is resolved into a linear string of at least six sub-components whilst the weaker image is radially stretched towards the lens galaxy. UKIRT K-band imaging detects an 18.7 mag extended object, but the resolution of the observations is not sufficient to resolve the lensed images and the lens galaxy. Mass modelling has not been possible with the present data and the acquisition of high-resolution optical data is a priority for this system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A new two-image gravitational lens system has been discovered as a result of the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS). Radio observations with the VLA, MERLIN and the VLBA at increasingly higher resolutions all show two components with a flux density ratio of ~7:1 and a separation of 1.34". Both components are compact and have the same spectral index. Followup observations made with the VLA at 8.4 GHz show evidence of a feature to the south-east of the brighter component and a corresponding extension of the weaker component to the north-west. Optical observations with the WHT show ~1.7" extended emission aligned in approximately the same direction as the separation between the radio components with an R-band magnitude of 21.8 +/- 0.4., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We derive constraints on cosmological parameters and the properties of the lensing galaxies from gravitational lens statistics based on the final Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) data. For a flat universe with a classical cosmological constant, we find that the present matter fraction of the critical density is $\Omega_{\rm m}=0.31^{+0.27}_{-0.14}$ (68%) $^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$ (systematic). For a flat universe with a constant equation of state for dark energy $w = p_x({pressure})/\rho_x({energy density})$, we find $w < -0.55^{+0.18}_{-0.11}$ (68%)., Comment: To appear 7 October 2002 issue (Vol. 89, issue 15) of Phys. We present a series of high resolution radio and optical observations of the CLASS gravitational lens system B1152+199 obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Based on the milliarcsecond-scale substructure of the lensed radio components and precise optical astrometry for the lensing galaxy, we construct models for the system and place constraints on the galaxy mass profile. For a single galaxy model with surface mass density Sigma(r) propto r^-beta, we find that 0.95 < beta < 1.21 at 2-sigma confidence. Including a second deflector to represent a possible satellite galaxy of the primary lens leads to slightly steeper mass profiles., Comment: 7 pages, post-referee revision for MNRAS

We report the discovery of a new two-image gravitational lens system from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey, CLASS B2319+051. Radio imaging with the Very Large Array (VLA) and Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) shows two compact components with a flux density ratio of 5:1, separated by 1.36 arcsec. Observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) resolve each of the radio components into a pair of parity-reversed subcomponents. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations with the Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) show a bright elliptical galaxy (G1) coincident with the radio position, and a second irregular galaxy (G2) 3.4 arcsec to the northwest. Previous spectroscopic studies have indicated that these galaxies are at different redshifts: z(G1) = 0.624, z(G2) = 0.588. Infrared counterparts to the lensed radio components are not detected in the NICMOS image, and the source redshift has not yet been determined. Preliminary mass modeling based on the VLBA subcomponent data indicates that the lensing potential includes a strong external shear contribution. HST V and I-band observations show that the gravitational lens B1359+154 consists of six images of a single z_s=3.235 radio source and its star-forming host galaxy, produced by a compact group of galaxies at z_l = 1. VLBA observations at 1.7 GHz strongly support this conclusion, showing six compact cores with similar low-frequency radio spectra. B1359+154 is the first example of galaxy-scale gravitational lensing in which more than four images are observed of the same background source. The configuration is due to the unique lensing mass distribution: three primary lens galaxies lying on the vertices of a triangle separated by 0.7 arcsec (4/h kpc), inside the 1.7 arcsec diameter Einstein ring defined by the radio images. The gravitational potential has additional extrema within this triangle, creating a pair of central images that supplement the ``standard'' four-image geometry of the outer components. Simple mass models consisting of three lens galaxies constrained by HST and VLBA astrometry naturally reproduce the observed image positions but must be finely-tuned to fit the flux densities., Comment: 28 pages including 6 figures, ApJ submitted

High resolution MERLIN observations of a newly-discovered four-image gravitational lens system, B0128+437, are presented. The system was found after a careful re-analysis of the entire CLASS dataset. The MERLIN observations resolve four components in a characteristic quadruple-image configuration; the maximum image separation is 542 mas and the total flux density is 48 mJy at 5 GHz. A best-fit lens model with a singular isothermal ellipsoid results in large errors in the image positions. A significantly improved fit is obtained after the addition of a shear component, suggesting that the lensing system is more complex and may consist of multiple deflectors. The integrated radio spectrum of the background source indicates that it is a GigaHertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) source. It may therefore be possible to resolve structure within the radio images with deep VLBI observations and thus better constrain the lensing mass distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 4 pages, 3 included PostScript figures

We present results from VLBA+Effelsberg 1.7 GHz, VLBA 8.4 GHz and VLBA 15 GHz observations of the JVAS gravitational lens system B1030+074. The VLBA+Effelsberg 1.7 GHz data with 3 mas resolution reveal a detailed 60 mas jet structure in the strong A component of the lens system and maybe a first hint of the corresponding jet structure in the faint component B. As we go to the higher resolution 8.4 GHz and 15 GHz data we can see more of the inner structure of the A core, which is resolved, while the B core still remains unresolved., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the Proceedings of the EVN symposium - 2000

We present the discovery of CLASS B0739+366, a new gravitational lens system from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey. Radio imaging of the source with the Very Large Array (VLA) shows two compact components separated by $0\farcs54$, with a flux density ratio of $\sim$ 6:1. High-resolution follow-up observations using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 1.7 GHz detect weak, parity-reversed jet emission from each of the radio components. Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS F160W observations detect infrared counterparts to the lensed images, as well as an extended object between them which we identify as the lensing galaxy. Redshifts for the galaxy and lensed source have not yet been obtained. For typical lens and source redshifts of $z=0.5$ and $z=1.5$, respectively, preliminary mass modeling predicts a time delay of $\sim7h^{-1}$ days in a flat $\Omega_{M}=1.0$ universe. The small predicted time delay and weak radio components will make CLASS B0739+366 a challenging target for Hubble constant determination., Comment: 15 pages, including 6 figures, to be published in AJ

The complex 10-component gravitational lens B1933+503 has been monitored with the VLA during the period February to June 1998. Here we present the results of this A-configuration 8.4 GHz monitoring campaign. The 37 epochs of observations have an average spacing of 3 days. The data have yielded light curves for the four flat-spectrum radio components (components 1, 3, 4 and 6).
