Diospyros trees, commonly known as persimmons or ebonies, have high economic and medicinal value. This study presents here a detailed analysis of the diversity and distribution of Diospyros species across 20 sites in the Western Ghats region of Karnataka, encompassing different forest types. Data collected from belt transects were used to calculate species richness and quantitative characters such as frequency, density, abundance, importance value index, basal area cover, and distribution type. Alpha and beta diversity across the different study sites were also determined. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis was performed to study the relationship between forest types and species composition. The results indicate Diospyros montana had the greatest frequency, density, basal area cover, and importance value. Agumbe and Hosagunda areas of Shivamogga district, and Makutta region of Kodagu district, showed rich diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Ecosystem services rendered by the butterflies are important for the sustenance of community interaction. Butterfly species have also coevolved with the host and nectaring plants. In the adult condition, they mostly rely on nectar, while in the larval condition, they feed on the leaves of their host plants. Butterfly species are sensitive to changes in environmental parameters and are considered excellent indicators of ecosystem health. The study of species diversity and richness indices aids in better ecosystem management. The present study's goal was to determine butterfly diversity in the urban–rural gradient of Purulia district, West Bengal, India, a part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. We aim to complement crucial information on butterfly conservation management in Purulia, West Bengal, India, and other similar geographical areas with the findings of this study. Results: It was found that out of 3809 sampled butterflies, the individual contribution of the family Nymphalidae was the highest (51.24%), followed by Lycaenidae (18.40%), Pieridae (17.32%), Papilionidae (9.74%), and Hesperiidae (3.12%). A total of 54 butterfly species were observed in the urban–rural gradient, out of which the urban region contained 49 species, the suburban region had 32 species, and the rural region had 30 species. Significant differences were observed in butterfly abundance for the sites, seasons, and families during the study period. PERMANOVA and ANOSIM for species abundance and species presence-absence data show that all three sites are significantly different. Results Both PCoA and NMDS revealed clear differences among sites (groups) in terms of species abundance and presence-absence data. According to the findings of this study, the urban region has the highest species richness, followed by the suburban and rural regions. We discovered that urban areas have the highest butterfly abundance, followed by suburban and rural areas. Numerous butterfly species prefer the bushes dominated by Lantanacamara in the urban region with the highest species richness. Aside from this invasive weed, the site also contains Tridaxprocumbens, Catharanthusroseus, Synedrellanodiflora, and Ocimumamericanum, which are well known for being butterfly nectaring plants. In the case of the suburban region, members of the Lycaenidae family contributed the highest percentage after Nymphalidae, which was dominated by Tridaxprocumbens and Sphagneticolatrilobata, which was preferred by the members of the Lycaenidae family observed during the survey, this site also contained Ixoracoccinea, Catharanthusroseus, and Lantanacamara. This site, in terms of nectaring plants, remains homogeneous in a rural region. Conclusions: Out of 3809 butterfly individuals, the family Nymphalidae contributed the most, followed by Lycaenidae, Pieridae, Papilionidae, and Hesperiidae. Both species richness and butterfly abundance were highest in urban regions, followed by sub-urban and rural regions. The current study has shown that this particular geographic location can sustain a variety of butterfly species. However, it is important to note that conservation planning is necessary not only for the butterfly species but also for the nectaring plant species that contribute to the diversity of these insects. The tree community of the rural zone was the most uneven and had the least variation among transects, representing the lowest β‐diversity. The urban zone was dominated by introduced species (57.7%), while the natural zone hosted almost exclusively native species (93.3%), including many endemics (26.1%). The biogeographic realms that species originated from were particularly diverse in the urban zone, with few species from the Afrotropics. In contrast to native and endemic trees, introduced trees were clearly associated with urban and rural expansion, as they were much more abundant and species‐rich in these zones than in the natural zone, facilitating biotic homogenisation. These findings highlight how urban and rural environments are affecting the native tree flora of São Tomé, and the need for conservation measures geared towards globally threatened and endemic tree species. Importantly, these require the protection of natural forests, despite the rising land demands for settlements and agriculture. Although vegetation succession in the Piedmont of eastern North America favors closed-canopy forest in the absence of disturbance, historical evidence suggests upland vegetation of the region was, in near history, characterized by areas of heliophilic vegetation, such as prairies, savannas, and woodlands. While some work has been undertaken to characterize putative remnant communities at the local and subregional level, there has been no comprehensive, quantitative study to characterize the breadth of heliophilic vegetation commonly referred to as "Piedmont prairies" in the mid-Atlantic portion of the Piedmont, despite evidence that more than one community type is likely represented. We fill this gap by assessing Piedmont prairie communities in the present-day landscape using the best quantitative vegetation data currently available from the Carolina Vegetation Survey vegetation-environment database. We extracted records for 195 permanent vegetation plots representative of upland, terrestrial, open or semi-open vegetation in the Piedmont of the Carolinas and Virginia, a region coinciding with 17th- and 18th-century accounts of historical savannas. Through hierarchical clustering (flexible-β) and stride analysis (plotting the PARTANA ratio and silhouette width), we determined the optimal partition for our dataset to be 12 clusters. The R package optpart was used to move plots between clusters to further ensure plots are members of their best-fit cluster. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination was used to visualize compositional trends in the dataset. We identified 12 major types of heliophilic vegetation that can be categorized into five larger groupings: Piedmont Oak-Hickory and Red Cedar Woodlands, Piedmont Glades, Piedmont Pine Woodlands, Piedmont Savannas and Grasslands, and Piedmont River Terrace Glades. Urban greenspaces face significant anthropogenic transformation, impacting soil ecosystems, multifunctionality, and global biodiversity. With increasing population and urbanization, understanding the drivers influencing soil nematode communities in urban greenspaces is crucial for sustainable urban ecosystem management. We chose the campus of The Ohio State University (OSU) due to its unique urban settings with minimally disturbed both turf and non-turf ecosystems. This study focuses on nematodes, the often-overlooked ecological engineers which play diverse roles in ecosystem functions. Nematodes were collected from 99 sampling locations across three soil depths to represent two ecosystem types (i.e., turf and non-turf) of the OSU campus. Among plant parasitic nematodes (PPN), Helicotylenchus and Pratylenchus populations were above damage threshold limits. No specific pattern of community composition was observed in the spatial variation map. The presence of rare PPN genera in the lower soil layers had a significant impact on beta diversity. Trophic group abundances displayed distinct patterns, with turf ecosystems exhibiting higher PPN as well as total nematode abundance decreasing with soil depths. In the subsurface layer (10–30 cm), both bacterivores and fungivores were higher in the non-turf than turf ecosystem. Fungal-dominated decomposition of organic matter was observed in both ecosystem types. Soil physiochemical properties, specifically, total organic carbon and soil texture, had a significant impact on PPN community composition. However, nematode trophic group composition was more altered by ecosystem type than edaphic factors followed by soil depths. Together these three explanatory variables explained 27.5 % of the total variance in trophic group composition. Overall, this study provides insights into the complex interactions between PPN, trophic groups, soil properties, and urban ecosystem characteristics, contributing valuable knowledge for sustainable urban greenspace management.

ABSTRACT We sought to evaluate the floristic and structural variations between three areas with distinct backgrounds in the Sooretama Biological Reserve, remnantd of Lowland Atlantic Forest in Brazil. For vegetation sampling, 30 transects were established in three different areas: post-pasture (PAS), post-fire (FIR), and preserved (PRE) remnants, totaling a sample area of 0.3ha. All individuals in the woody layer with diameter at breast height ≥ 2.5cm were sampled. Variations in floristic composition were evaluated by means of NMDS, based on the presence or absence of species. There are clear variations between the three areas evaluated, in which the PRE area presents greater species richness, floristic diversity, and basal area, with parameters similar to forests of high diversity in northern Espírito Santo and southern Bahia. The performance of inventories and monitoring of the remnants of Lowland Atlantic Forests in neglected regions are fundamental for planning conservation and enrichment measures of these vegetations

The South American central Andes have a great richness of Asteraceae, where the genus Stevia (Eupatorieae, Piqueriinae) is also especially diverse. The taxonomy of Stevia species in the southern part of the central Andes pose a challenge because of the unclear delimitation among the species and overlap of morphological characters. Two species complexes were identified for the region comprising north Argentina and southern Bolivia. In this study, our objectives were to employ morphometric analyses to assess the delimitation of taxa within the Stevia alpina Griseb. and Stevia chamaedrys Griseb. complexes. We aimed to identify informative morphological characters and gain insight into the identity of species in each group. To accomplish this, we utilised cluster analysis, principal-component analysis, non-metric multidimensional scaling and univariate analyses to evaluate 37 morphological traits. In total, 200 specimens were examined, covering the entire geographic distribution of each species complex. We found support for the recognition of nine species: Stevia alpina, S. breviaristata Hook. & Arn., S. chamaedrys, S. mandonii Sch. Bip., S. mercedensis Hieron., S. minor Griseb., S. potrerensis Hieron., S. procumbens Hieron. and S. vaga Griseb. A new combination and status is proposed for S. tarijensis Hieron., incorporating it as a variety of S. mandonii, and S. centinelae Cabrera and S. crassicephala Cabrera are merged as synonyms under the name S. alpina. We conducted an ant inventory in urban and suburban spaces in Bejaia city to deal with this need for more information about ant biodiversity in the Algerian urban environment. The two methods, hand collecting and pitfall traps, are carried out 24 days in three months (May, June, and July) of 2022. In the urban habitats, 2,653 ant individuals were collected, comprising ten species, six genera and three subfamilies. In the suburban habitats, 6,706 ant specimens were collected, comprising 19 species, 11 genera, and three subfamilies. The most abundant subfamilies in both urban and suburban habitats are Formicinae, followed by Myrmicinae and Dolichoderinae. The results showed that suburban habitats are more diversified (H’= 1.72) than urban habitats (H’= 1.25). The equitability values for suburban and urban habitats are moderate, with 0.58 and 0.54, respectively. The Jaccard similarity index value is 0.45, indicating an essential turnover of ant species between urban and suburban habitats. The ant community’s composition differed between sampled sites (NMDS, Stress = 0.013). The average dissimilarity (as per SIMPER) was 90.37%. Four species (T. simrothi, L. cf. grandis, P. cicatricosa, and L. myops) contributed to 70% of the differences between sites of urban and suburban habitats.

The aim of this work was to investigate the composition of essential oils isolated from fruits of Peucedanum longifolium, and Rhizomatophora aegopodioides (a species which was previously placed in the genus Peucedanum), as well as to compare the obtained results to those available for other previously investigated related species (including taxa which are also, according to some authors, excluded from the genus Peucedanum). Essential oils were obtained via hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus and their composition was analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. To compare these data to those of previously investigated taxa, a chemometric approach was applied; the data were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods: non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and hierarchical cluster analysis. The most abundant in P. longifolium essential oil were monoterpenes (79.7%), mostly α-phellandrene (26.2%), β-phellandrene + limonene (21.0%) and myrcene (9.5%), followed by sesquiterpenes (18.3%), mostly germacrene B (9.5%). On the other hand, dominant in R. aegopodioides essential oil were non-terpenic aliphatic hydrocarbons (46.1%), mainly n-undecane (16.5%) and n-nonane (11.3%). In addition, this essential oil also contained a notable quantity of sesquiterpenes (25.1%), with (E)-sesquilavandulol being the most abundant (10.0%). The results of multivariate statistics revealed a clear separation of the essential oil composition of R. aegopodioides and P. longifolium, as well as of P. longifolium and P. officinale. The clustering of the samples of most of the taxa that do not belong to the Peucedanum in the narrow sense (sensu stricto) was also observed, which is in accordance with their recent inclusion in separate genera. The rhynchonellide brachiopod Dzieduszyckia Siemiradzki is widely distributed in the Lower Famennian strata, and exhibits a wide range of morphological variations among populations. 1272 autochthonous Devonian Rongxian Dzieduszyckia fossils were collected from three populations in South China, namely the Dazhai, Dalong, and Longmi sections. A series of quantitative morphological analyses were conducted to understand the morphological variation among populations and identify the triggers responsible for such variations. The results show that the Dazhai population differs significantly in morphospace from the Dalong and Longmi populations, while the latter two exhibit more similar morphological features, suggesting that geographic distribution may play a key role in affecting Dzieduszyckia morphology. The Longmi population shows a distinct morphospace from the Dazhai population and an overlapped morphospace with the Dalong population, indicating that habitat may not be the controlling factor. Lastly, the Dazhai and Dalong populations share some morphological similarities, but the Dazhai and Longmi populations occupy completely different morphospaces, indicating that evolution had a greater impact on phenotypic divergence than habitat. Our findings suggest that geographic distribution is the predominant factor influencing the morphological variation of Dzieduszyckia, while evolution and living habitat are less significant, the former of which might play a more important role. The Paisley Cave archeological site in the Northern Great Basin has provided a rich archaeological record from 13,000 to 6000 cal yr BP, including abundant mammalian coprolites preserved in a well-dated stratigraphy. Here we analyze and contrast pollen from within coprolites and pollen in associated sediments to examine vegetation history and assess whether coprolite pollen provides unique information with respect to the coprolite producer, such as the use of specific habitats, foods, or water sources. We found that the dissimilarity of pollen assemblages between coprolites and associated sediments was greater than the serial dissimilarity between stratigraphically adjacent samples within either group. Serial dissimilarity within types was not greater for coprolites than sediments, as would be expected if there were unique pollen signatures derived from the short period (1-2 days) represented by each coprolite. Compared with sediment pollen assemblages, the coprolites had higher abundances of lighter pollen types, and some individual samples were high in wetland taxa (especially Typha). Our results are consistent with coprolite pollen representing short time periods collected as a mammal moves on the landscape, whereas sediment pollen reflects longer time periods and more regional vegetation indicators. The study was conducted on four islands located west of Bejaia (north-eastern Algeria) to collect baseline information about diversity and composition of insects. Data were collected during summer and spring of 2015 using traps, sweep nets and the Japanese umbrella sampling methods. A total of 1691 individuals belonging to 112 species were collected. Totals of 72, 56, 41 and 34 species were recorded in Pisans Island, El Euch Island, Sahel Islet and Ail Islet, respectively. Of the 1,691 individuals recorded, 39.85 %, 30.51 %, 18.03 % and 11.59 % were recorded in Pisans Island, El Euch Island, Sahel Islet and Ail Islet, respectively. Shannon-Weaver index ranged from 2.96 to 3.34 and Equitability between 0.77 and 0.87. The composition of the insect community differed between sampled islands (NMDS, Stress =. 0.013). Eleven (11) insect species composed over 50 % of dissimilarity between islands. Two species (Cassida viridis (L.) and Pheidole pallidula (Nyl.) accounted for more than 5 % of the diversity on all islands. Sorensen's similarity coefficient showed that Pisans and El Euch islands have the highest similarity (45.37 %), while the lowest similarity was recorded between Pisans Island and Sahel Islet (15.53 %).

In the context of climate change, the decline in biodiversity and current socio-economic trends, which support the processes of industrialization or abandonment of agricultural land, have generated numerous concepts and trends to encourage sustainable agriculture and a better connection between agricultural activities and nature. Concepts such as traditional agricultural landscapes (TALs), high nature value farmlands (HNV farmlands), organic farming, and agricultural heritage systems are associated with the maintenance or sustainable development of ecological agricultural systems, with an emphasis on providing ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, and heritage protection. This study aimed to review the concept associated with traditional agricultural landscapes and identify the evolution and trends in research on traditional agricultural landscapes. We hypothesize that our findings will advance our understanding of potential alternative methods of sustainable agricultural development associated with traditional agricultural landscapes. We analyzed articles published in international journals, linked to the Web of Science database, related to traditional agricultural landscapes between 1992 and 2021 (n = 230). Keyword analysis was used to identify trends and developments in traditional agricultural landscape research. We chose a non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) because we intended to examine how the relationships between different concepts are established. Our results illustrate the most common research topics related to traditional agricultural landscapes and alternative development pathways associated with sustainable agriculture. The terms used are promoted by the journal Biodiversity and Conservation, which contains articles addressing the top topics of interest and relevance to the research topic of this paper. The NMDS analysis captures the complexity of the topic addressed through the resulting areas of intersection. Our findings suggest that several topics of current interest are addressed in the research on traditional agricultural landscapes. The interest of the scientific community in traditional agricultural landscape research shows a growing trend. The adaptation of traditional agriculture to the current context is a particularly important subject to be addressed in future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We found bilberry ramet size, cover and berry production to peak at intermediate elevations, whereas seed production increased upwards. The peaks were less pronounced in extreme (dry or cold) summers than in normal summers. Local environmental variables explained much variation in ramet size and cover, less in berry production, and showed no relation to seed production. Climatic variables explained more of the variation in berry and seed production than in ramet size and cover, with temperature relating to vegetative performance, and precipitation to reproductive performance. Bilberry's clonal growth and effective reproduction probably explain why the species persists in the forest and at the same time invades alpine areas. Our findings raise concerns of the appropriateness of the climatic space‐for‐time approach. We recommend including both climatic and local environmental variables in studies of variation along elevation gradients and conclude that variation partitioning can be a useful supplement to other methods for analysing variation in plant performance. Our findings raise concerns of the appropriateness of the climatic space‐for‐time approach. We recommend including both climatic and local environmental variables in studies of variation along elevation gradients and conclude that variation partitioning can be a useful supplement to other methods for analysing variation in plant performance.

Invasive alien species can negatively affect native species communities. Bombus terrestris, an invasive species, has become dominant among bumblebee communities in many areas worldwide. In 2007, B. terrestris invaded the Notsuke Peninsula, a critical area for biodiversity conservation on the northern island of Hokkaido, Japan. We surveyed native bumblebee species across the peninsula from 2007 to 2019 and identified changes in the native bumblebee community using non-metric multidimensional scaling. We also surveyed B. terrestris and estimated the factors influencing its population using a zero-inflated Poisson regression model. A few years after the invasion, B. terrestris was observed across the peninsula, except at the southwestern end. However, its abundance did not increase, as in the other areas of Hokkaido. Analytical results showed a significant association between the change in the native bumblebee community and B. terrestris abundance and positive relationship of B. terrestris abundance with temperatures. As the annual temperature increased, observation of B. terrestris also increased; however, the species has not become dominant on the Notsuke Peninsula. Bombus terrestris favors a relatively warmer climate in its native areas and requires high temperatures for colony development; thus, it may not adapt well to the current cold climate of the Notsuke Peninsula. The climate could affect the population growth of B. terrestris directly through physiological traits, such as behavior, survival, and reproduction, as well as indirectly through the availability and composition of floral resources. Saline and alkaline habitats of the Okha coastline, Gujarat, India, were explored for the diversity of actinobacteria. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity, nine haloalkaliphilic actinobacterial strains were characterized and identified. The PCR amplification of 16S rDNA using universal and genus-specific primers corroborated the trends that emerged through cultural and physiological characterization. Streptomyces was the most abundant genus amplified with the Streptomyces-specific primers (StreptB/E, StreptB/F), whereas other actinobacterial strains were amplified by the universal primers U1 and U2. Further molecular diversity was investigated by the gradient PCR-DGGE as a fingerprinting tool that generated group-specific DGGE patterns. Based on the nucleotide homology and phylogenetic analysis, strains OK-1 and OK-2 were identified as Streptomyces somaliensis. At the same time, OK-3 and OK-7 were detected as Streptomyces sp., while OK-5, OK-6, OK-8, OK-9, and OK-10 belonged to Nocardiopsis alba. Further, the cluster analysis using the UPGMA method generated 3 clusters based on biochemical characterization, sugar utilization, and enzyme production. The dendrogram based on the DGGE band pattern created with Jaccard-distance revealed two major clades with 33.33% similarity. Further, the study of alpha diversity calculation using phenotypic characteristics discloses highly diverse sugar utilization abilities. Moreover, a stress value of 0.1236 was obtained based on the NMDS analysis of the plots using Bary-Curties dissimilarity. Among the key drivers of shift in global biodiversity and ecosystem change, plant invasion is ranked second after habitat fragmentation. Invasive plant species often cause reduction in native species richness, yet many aggressive invaders have not been well studied for such impacts. Hence, we investigated the impacts of invasive Centaurea iberica Spreng. (the Iberian knapweed or Iberian star-thistle) on species diversity in three regions of Kashmir Himalaya (North, Central and South Kashmir). Through intensive field surveys, we compared the species diversity of C. iberica invaded and uninvaded plots and found that the uninvaded plots are more diverse (H´ = 2.65 ± 0.287) than the invaded plots (H´ = 0.88 ± 0.266). Uninvaded plots on an average harbored 5.26 ± 1.23 more species per 1m2 than invaded plots. The higher value of species richness in the control plots revealed rather heterogeneous nature of the communities as against the more homogenous communities of invaded plots. At multivariate scale, the ordination (NMDS) and ANOSIM exhibited significant differences between invaded and uninvaded plots (R = 0.6752 and p < 0.0001). Riverbed sediments in agricultural landscapes are loaded with phosphorus (P). They may act as a source or sink for riverine P, possibly causing harmful algae blooms and eutrophication in streams and receiving water bodies, including coastal waters. In this study, we aimed at identifying the labile, moderately labile, and stable P fraction (Hedley fractionation) in sediments of a northeastern German river basin (3000 km2). A non-metrical multidimensional scaling (NMDS) was used to identify the most significant environmental predictors of the P fractionation in sediments. The total P contents of the sediments varied over a wide range (698 ± 701 mg P kg−1 sediment−1), spanning from 98 to 2648 mg P kg−1 sediment−1. Adjacent agricultural reference soils had markedly lower total P contents of 354 ± 132 mg P kg−1 soil−1, ranging from 146 to 483 P kg−1 soil−1. There were almost no differences between the P contents of the top (0–2 cm) and the bottom (2–10 cm) layer. The dominant P fractions were the moderately labile (NaOH-P) and the stable (H2SO4-P) fractions, which accounted for more than 50% of the total P at each sampling point. The NMDS revealed that iron and aluminum contents, as well as land use, are significant predictors for the P fractionation of the sediment. The sediment P-composition reflects the P-status of the agriculturally used mineral soils. However, the size of the contributing catchment as well as the length of the water way have no effects on sediment P. In conclusion, sediment P stocks, though variable, may impede the good ecological status of river waters for decades, especially in lowland basins where hydraulic conditions and a very low stream velocity often create low redox and P dissolution conditions in sediments. Establishing realistic targets for fish community composition is needed to assess the effectiveness of river restoration projects. We used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding with MiFish primers to obtain estimates of fish community composition across 17 sites upstream, downstream and within a restoration mitigation project area (Kaihotsu–Kasumi) located in the Shigenobu River system, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. We evaluate the benefits of using eDNA to quickly, sensitively, and extensively gather data to establish existing fish community composition in the restoration area, as well as potential future short-term, medium-term, and long-term targets of species assemblages that could realistically emerge following dispersal into the project area from upstream and downstream populations. We compare results from eDNA metabarcoding with species lists obtained from contemporaneous capture surveys and historical information. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling plots of community composition obtained from eDNA surveys showed that the Kaihotsu–Kasumi restoration area and surrounding river reaches were divided into three clusters: upper reaches, middle and lower reaches, and estuarine reaches. The Kaihotsu–Kasumi restoration area sites were included in the group containing the middle and lower reaches of the inflow and outflow rivers that were near the restoration area. We detected a total of twenty-six species in this group, twenty-one native species and five non-native species. Therefore, these native species were considered suitable as short-term target species with high potential for dispersal into Kaihotsu–Kasumi restoration area. By comparison, only 14 species would have been selected as target species based on capture surveys and historical literature. One factor increasing the resolution of our eDNA surveys was our ability to identify the presence of intraspecific lineages of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Clades A and B), which were missed by the capture surveys. These results indicate that the eDNA metabarcoding method can provide more comprehensive and realistic short-term target species estimates than capture surveys, as well as provide higher resolution monitoring through intraspecific lineage detection.

The aim of this work was to investigate the composition of essential oils isolated from fruits of Peucedanum longifolium, and Rhizomatophora aegopodioides (a species which was previously placed in the genus Peucedanum), as well as to compare the obtained results to those available for other previously investigated related species (including taxa which are also, according to some authors, excluded from the genus Peucedanum). Essential oils were obtained via hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus and their composition was analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. To compare these data to those of previously investigated taxa, a chemometric approach was applied; the data were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods: non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and hierarchical cluster analysis. The most abundant in P. longifolium essential oil were monoterpenes (79.7%), mostly α-phellandrene (26.2%), β-phellandrene + limonene (21.0%) and myrcene (9.5%), followed by sesquiterpenes (18.3%), mostly germacrene B (9.5%). On the other hand, dominant in R. aegopodioides essential oil were non-terpenic aliphatic hydrocarbons (46.1%), mainly n-undecane (16.5%) and n-nonane (11.3%). In addition, this essential oil also contained a notable quantity of sesquiterpenes (25.1%), with (E)-sesquilavandulol being the most abundant (10.0%). The results of multivariate statistics revealed a clear separation of the essential oil composition of R. aegopodioides and P. longifolium, as well as of P. longifolium and P. officinale. The clustering of the samples of most of the taxa that do not belong to the Peucedanum in the narrow sense (sensu stricto) was also observed, which is in accordance with their recent inclusion in separate genera.

Though ant diversity was well documented, relations between ground‐dwelling and arboreal ants were poorly known. It was in this mind that we compared species diversity and composition between ground‐dwelling and arboreal ant in three type of habitats at Mfou, a suburban agglomeration of Yaoundé city in Cameroon. Ants were collected in secondary forests, cocoa farms, and palm groves using pitfall, baits and visual catch. Ant communities were characterised using species richness and Shannon diversity index. Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and Venn diagrams were used to determine respectively species composition and the number of exclusive and shared species between types of habitats. We recorded 144 ant species belonging to 39 genera and 6 subfamilies. Ground‐dwelling ants were richest and diversified in secondary forests, while arboreal ant fauna was in cocoa farms. Arboreal ant community in palm groves was closed to that found on the ground in all type of habitats. Suggesting that, when a deep modifications occurred in a natural habitat, arboreal ant fauna could not establish permanent colonies. Therefore, trees canopies were colonised by some ground‐dwelling ant species who progressively substituted arboreal ant on the trees. The aetiology and pathophysiology of many diseases of the motor unit remain poorly understood and the role of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) in this group of disorders is particularly overlooked, especially in humans, when these diseases are comparatively rare. However, elucidating the development, function and degeneration of the NMJ is essential to uncover its contribution to neuromuscular disorders, and to explore potential therapeutic avenues to treat these devastating diseases. Until now, an understanding of the role of the NMJ in disease pathogenesis has been hindered by inherent differences between rodent and human NMJs: stark contrasts in body size and corresponding differences in associated axon length underpin some of the translational issues in animal models of neuromuscular disease. Comparative studies in large mammalian models, including examination of naturally occurring, highly prevalent animal diseases and evaluation of their treatment, might provide more relevant insights into the pathogenesis and therapy of equivalent human diseases. This review argues that large animal models offer great potential to enhance our understanding of the neuromuscular system in health and disease, and in particular, when dealing with diseases for which nerve length dependency might underly the pathogenesis. This work is focused on nine Heracleum taxa (Apiaceae): H. sphondylium, H. sibiricum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. orsinii and H. verticillatum, belonging to the H. sphondylium group, and H. orphanidis, all from sect. Heracleum, as well as H. austriacum subsp. siifolium from sect. Wendia. The aim was to isolate the headspace (HS) fractions from 17 fruit samples (collected from all nine Heracleum taxa) and 13 root samples (collected from all eight taxa belonging to sect. Heracleum), to investigate their composition and chemosystematic significance, as well as to compare these results with those previously obtained for the essential oils isolated by hydrodistillation from the same fruit and root samples. The HS fractions were isolated using an automatic static HS sampler and analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The fruit HS fractions were dominated by octyl acetate and/or α-pinene (the taxa from the sect. Heracleum), or n-octanol (H. austriacum), whereas the root HS fractions mainly contained β-pinene and/or (Z)-β-ocimene (the taxa from the H. sphondylium group), or n-nonane (H. orphanidis). The chemosystematic significance was evaluated using multivariate statistical methods: principal component analysis (PCA), non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering based on the unweighted pair-group arithmetic average (UPGMA) algorithm. As in the case of previously investigated essential oils, the statistical analysis of the fruit and root HS fractions generally resulted in the grouping of the investigated H. sphondylium group representatives, and within this group, the grouping of morphologically related H. sphondylium and H. montanum and the isolated position of H. verticillatum. The statistical analysis of the root HS fractions resulted in better separation of the taxa (even compared to previous analysis of the essential oils), i.e. isolated positions of H. ternatum and H. pyrenaicum were observed.

Urban greenspaces face significant anthropogenic transformation, impacting soil ecosystems, multifunctionality, and global biodiversity. With increasing population and urbanization, understanding the drivers influencing soil nematode communities in urban greenspaces is crucial for sustainable urban ecosystem management. We chose the campus of The Ohio State University (OSU) due to its unique urban settings with minimally disturbed both turf and non-turf ecosystems. This study focuses on nematodes, the often-overlooked ecological engineers which play diverse roles in ecosystem functions. Nematodes were collected from 99 sampling locations across three soil depths to represent two ecosystem types (i.e., turf and non-turf) of the OSU campus. Among plant parasitic nematodes (PPN), Helicotylenchus and Pratylenchus populations were above damage threshold limits. No specific pattern of community composition was observed in the spatial variation map. The presence of rare PPN genera in the lower soil layers had a significant impact on beta diversity. Trophic group abundances displayed distinct patterns, with turf ecosystems exhibiting higher PPN as well as total nematode abundance decreasing with soil depths. In the subsurface layer (10–30 cm), both bacterivores and fungivores were higher in the non-turf than turf ecosystem. Fungal-dominated decomposition of organic matter was observed in both ecosystem types. Soil physiochemical properties, specifically, total organic carbon and soil texture, had a significant impact on PPN community composition. However, nematode trophic group composition was more altered by ecosystem type than edaphic factors followed by soil depths. Together these three explanatory variables explained 27.5 % of the total variance in trophic group composition. Overall, this study provides insights into the complex interactions between PPN, trophic groups, soil properties, and urban ecosystem characteristics, contributing valuable knowledge for sustainable urban greenspace management. The Mediterranean Basin has distinct vegetation types shaped by fire, herbivory, and various human activities. Based on data from 83 belt transects of 10 × 40 m in 28 study sites for five physiognomic vegetation types (semi-closed forest, open forest, closed shrubland, open shrubland, and scrubland) in southwestern Anatolia (Turkey), we analyzed woody species diversity, woody community composition, and vegetation structure of study sites. We used the growth form and regeneration strategy for functional comparisons of physiognomic vegetation types. We found clear distinctions in diversity, species composition, and functional structure of woody plant community across five physiognomic vegetation types. The forest-shrubland-scrubland distinction was the most apparent one. Despite similarities in the woody species richness and Shannon diversity, open and closed vegetation states of forests and shrublands also differed regarding the density and cover of mature individuals and the density of saplings in different functional groups. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analyses and indicator species analyses also indicated clear distinctions among physiognomic vegetation types and openness states. Our findings indicate the necessity of a more complex description of vegetation types in the Mediterranean Basin. The results suggest that open and closed vegetation states of forests and shrublands are functionally distinct vegetation types. Dachigam-Dara catchment feeding the world-famous Dal Lake was assessed and evaluated for water quality and anthropogenic impacts using physico-chemical and biological data from 2016 to 2018. Seven sites belonging to Dachigam (DACZ) and Dara zone (DARZ) catchment, three sites from the confluence zone (WANZ), and two sites at the downstream end (TELZ) were selected characterized by varying degrees of anthropogenic pressures. Biological Monitoring Working Program, and Average Score Per Taxon at the upstream zones (DACZ, DARZ, and WANZ) recorded significantly higher scores with water quality indices falling within the good category than the downstream zone (TELZ). Taxa richness, and diversity indices of benthic macroinvertebrates recorded higher values at the upstream zones (DACZ, and DARZ), and confluence zone (WANZ), compared to the downstream zone (TELZ). Results revealed that phylum Arthropoda was most dominant contributing 37 invertebrate families (constituting 90% of the total macroinvertebrate community, including Crustacea and Arachnida) while phylum Mollusca and Annelida constitute 5% each. Macroinvertebrate families Baetidae, Erpobdellidae, Gammaridae, Chironomidae, and Heptagenidae contributed significantly to the similarity and dissimilarity between the sampling zones. The best subset of environmental variables (BIOENV) test revealed that the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage in the Dachigam-Dara catchment is driven by pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and phosphate phosphorous. The upstream zones (DACZ, and DARZ) and confluence zone (WANZ), compared to the downstream zone (TELZ) suggest progressive shift of pollution sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa to pollution tolerant taxa in response to anthropogenic activities in the stream ecosystem over time. Abstract Ordination is the name given to a group of methods used to analyse multiple variables without preceding hypotheses. Over the last few decades, the use of these methods in Earth science in general, and notably in analyses of sedimentary sources, has dramatically increased. However, with limited resources oriented towards Earth scientists on the topic, the application of ordination analysis is at times suboptimal and misuse by authors can occur. This text was written for researchers with little to no experience with ordination with the aim of exposing them to the utility and the pitfalls of this branch of exploratory statistics. To do so, a detailed review of three ordination methods is offered: principal component analysis, non‐metric multidimensional scaling and detrended correspondence analysis. A survey of 163 publications in Earth science is presented, in which these ordination methods were used together with a summary of how, why and on what type of data ordination was used. With common mistakes outlined and misuses in those publications identified. Notably, issues were found with reproducibility, documentation, data set dimensions and transformations. Based on this survey, a recommended workflow is offered for Earth scientists who wish to apply ordination. Additionally, this article is accompanied by highly annotated R scripts for novice users to use these methods.

Extreme weather events can temporarily alter the structure of coastal systems and generate floodwaters that are contaminated with fecal indicator bacteria (FIB); however, every coastal system is unique, so identification of trends and commonalities in these episodic events is challenging. To improve our understanding of the resilience of coastal systems to the disturbance of extreme weather events, we monitored water quality, FIB at three stations within Clear Lake, an estuary between Houston and Galveston, and three stations in bayous that feed into the estuary. Water samples were collected immediately before and after Hurricane Harvey (HH) and then throughout the fall of 2017. FIB levels were monitored by culturing E. coli and Enterococci. Microbial community structure was profiled by high throughput sequencing of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments. Water quality and FIB data were also compared to historical data for these water body segments. Before HH, salinity within Clear Lake ranged from 9 to 11 practical salinity units (PSU). Immediately after the storm, salinity dropped to < 1 PSU and then gradually increased to historical levels over 2 months. Dissolved inorganic nutrient levels were also relatively low immediately after HH and returned, within a couple of months, to historical levels. FIB levels were elevated immediately after the storm; however, after 1 week, E. coli levels had decreased to what would be acceptable levels for freshwater. Enterococci levels collected several weeks after the storm were within the range of historical levels. Microbial community structure shifted from a system dominated by Cyanobacteria sp. before HH to a system dominated by Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes immediately after. Several sequences observed only in floodwater showed similarity to sequences previously reported for samples collected following Hurricane Irene. These changes in beta diversity corresponded to salinity and nitrate/nitrite concentrations. Differential abundance analysis of metabolic pathways, predicted from 16S sequences, suggested that pathways associated with virulence and antibiotic resistance were elevated in floodwater. Overall, these results suggest that floodwater generated from these extreme events may have high levels of fecal contamination, antibiotic resistant bacteria and bacteria rarely observed in other systems. Quantitative analysis of the species composition and succession law of a plant community in a coastal reclamation area is of great significance for revealing the community construction and species coexistence mechanisms, and provides a basis for the rational use and conservation in coastal reclamation areas. Through the investigation of natural plant communities in Dongtai reclamation area and the adjacent national nature reserves in Jiangsu Province, eastern China, the composition and succession of plant communities were studied. A quantitative method was explored to analyze the process of plant succession and its representative species. The results showed that (1) A total of 65 species were found in the vegetation survey. These belonged to 26 families and 61 genera, and Poaceae is the most common plant species. The plant communities in the unreclaimed areas were mainly composed of Poaceae and Cyperaceae. The plant species increased after reclamation, which were mainly composed of Poaceae and Asteraceae; (2) The plant coverage greatly reduced after three years of reclamation, from 80% of the tidal flat to 37.34%, then gradually increased, and remained generally between 50% and 70%; (3) The above-ground biomass of the plant community was sharply reduced after reclamation, from 1.823 kg/m2 in the tidal flat to 0.321 kg/m2 in three years of reclamation, and then maintained at 0.11~0.27 kg/m2; (4)The species succession process of the plant community in the coastal wetland ecosystem that was affected by the reclamation activities transformed from a halophyte community that was dominated by a salt marsh plant community (Suaeda salsa, Spartina alterniflora, Scirpus mariqueter, and Phragmites australis) to a mesophyte plant community that was constructed with pioneer species such as Setaria viridis, Eleusine indica, etc., and eventually succeeded to a xerophyte plant community that was dominated by Humulus scandens and Cyperus difformis, etc. Reclamation activities have a profound impact on the characteristics and succession rules of natural vegetation communities along coastal wetland ecosystems. The period of seven years is presumed to be the tipping point in the succession of the plant community in coastal reclamation areas. This study was aimed to (1) document the macromoth species richness and diversity along altitudinal gradients, (2) investigate the community structure along altitudinal gradients, and (3) analyze the similarity within each altitude using nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination. In this study, macromoth community structures were investigated in Mt. Baegun, Korea, along the altitudinal gradients in 2012 and 2015. Diversity indexes and NMDS ordination were used for community structure in each altitudinal gradient. In NMDS ordination, the result of altitude was more distinct than that of month. The results suggest that the altitudinal habitat might be more affected in species composition rather than in seasonal temperature.

Food web studies rely heavily on the use of traditional gut content analysis or the fairly popular stable isotope analysis rather than fatty acid analysis (FAA) despite its straightforward process, and ability to identify and characterize more diverse trophic pathways. In this study, we employed fatty acid (FA) biomarkers as a preliminary attempt to trace and characterize trophic pathways in food webs of four tropical lakes of volcanic origin in Luzon Island, Philippines - three clustered maar lakes (Yambo, Pandin and Calibato) and a large caldera lake (Taal). These lakes have a long history of human disturbance but limited ecological data. Knowledge of basal food sources and existing trophic dynamics of organisms are generally non-existent. Particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, and fish species were collected in August 2019 from the study lakes as representative of three trophic guilds. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted to analyse FA profiles and characterize trophic relationships between representative organisms. For the POM, within lakes comparison of taxon-specific FA profiles showed a significant difference between the surface and near bottom depths, with the former dominated by photoautorophs and the latter by chemotrophs, suggesting the ability of FAA to effectively delineate between micro-organisms. Between lakes comparison also showed significant difference between the caldera and maar lakes, with the latter containing higher composition of bacterial FA, reminiscent of the considerably smaller lakes’ response to the impact of unmitigated organic loadings from anthropogenic activities. Taken together with the primary consumers’ FA profiles, analysis confirmed the ability of FAA to discriminate between FA profile sources. PCA explained >70% of the variance in the FA compositions for three trophic guilds in the two deepest lakes, which delineated both zooplankton and fish species food selectivity in each lake, alluding to FAA’s capacity to characterize dietary reliance of various species in an environment with numerous food sources. Although certain limitations were encountered, such as the specificity of the sampling depths for POM, and the small sample size of the representative species of the third trophic level, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of FAA as a powerful ecological tool for disentangling intricate lake food webs comprising various food sources. Overall, this study provided baseline information on basal food sources and trophic pathways of representative organisms from four tropical lakes. Taken together, FAA studies have wide application in understanding food webs, including anthropogenically-threatened lake ecosystems.

Longline fishery surveys are major contributors to groundfish species abundance estimates. Catchability is often assumed constant, but bait is lost or consumed at inconsistent rates during and across gear sets. Accounting for hook availability and gear saturation can improve abundance estimates, but these data are challenging to collect. Our objectives were to determine whether video camera systems can be used to collect these data from the Northeast Fisheries Science Center's Gulf of Maine Bottom Longline Survey and to explore the associations between hook disposition percentages and environmental characteristics. Electronic monitoring camera systems were deployed on partner vessels during two fall and two spring seasons to capture video of gear retrieval. During post-survey review, individual hooks were recorded as one of the following hook dispositions: bait, empty hook, fish, and invertebrate. Percentages of these hook dispositions were characterized across categorical (season, day or night, and bottom substrata) and continuous (bottom temperature, bottom depth, and substrate rugosity) survey station variables. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling and logistic regression analyses revealed correlations between retained bait and low bottom temperatures, the spring season, shallow depths, rough bottom substrata, and high terrain rugosity. These characteristics were typical of shallow, inshore, and topographically variable survey strata, suggesting that catchability differs among habitat types. This information will be incorporated into catch rate models to develop standardized indices of abundance for groundfish stock assessments. Riverbed sediments in agricultural landscapes are loaded with phosphorus (P). They may act as a source or sink for riverine P, possibly causing harmful algae blooms and eutrophication in streams and receiving water bodies, including coastal waters. In this study, we aimed at identifying the labile, moderately labile, and stable P fraction (Hedley fractionation) in sediments of a northeastern German river basin (3000 km2). A non-metrical multidimensional scaling (NMDS) was used to identify the most significant environmental predictors of the P fractionation in sediments. The total P contents of the sediments varied over a wide range (698 ± 701 mg P kg−1 sediment−1), spanning from 98 to 2648 mg P kg−1 sediment−1. Adjacent agricultural reference soils had markedly lower total P contents of 354 ± 132 mg P kg−1 soil−1, ranging from 146 to 483 P kg−1 soil−1. There were almost no differences between the P contents of the top (0–2 cm) and the bottom (2–10 cm) layer. The dominant P fractions were the moderately labile (NaOH-P) and the stable (H2SO4-P) fractions, which accounted for more than 50% of the total P at each sampling point. The NMDS revealed that iron and aluminum contents, as well as land use, are significant predictors for the P fractionation of the sediment. The sediment P-composition reflects the P-status of the agriculturally used mineral soils. However, the size of the contributing catchment as well as the length of the water way have no effects on sediment P. In conclusion, sediment P stocks, though variable, may impede the good ecological status of river waters for decades, especially in lowland basins where hydraulic conditions and a very low stream velocity often create low redox and P dissolution conditions in sediments.

Conservation efforts commonly target the protection of specific threatened species and habitats, with the value of heterogeneous landscapes often overlooked. Areas with small fragments of habitat tend to receive little attention, but the overall habitat mosaic may support substantial biodiversity. In this work, we investigated seasonal bird–habitat associations on Akrotiri Peninsula, Cyprus, a well-known migration bottleneck site. The area comprises a heterogeneous landscape of diverse but fragmented habitats, with extensive wetlands rich in bird species. We mapped habitat types across the study area, and performed 388 point counts to record bird species richness and abundance in each season for 1 year. A total of 6255 individuals of 115 species were recorded. The study revealed that species were clustered within and around freshwater bodies, and taller and structurally more complex habitats. Seasonal patterns showed that winter and spring seasons supported greater richness of species and numbers of individuals compared to summer and autumn. Overall, we show that water availability and structural complexity of habitat types are positively correlated with both species richness and abundance. Our comprehensive seasonal bird–habitat association study in a protected, designated site, highlights the value of protecting a heterogeneous landscape in its entirety because of the overall diversity it can support across seasons. Food web studies rely heavily on the use of traditional gut content analysis or the fairly popular stable isotope analysis rather than fatty acid analysis (FAA) despite its straightforward process, and ability to identify and characterize more diverse trophic pathways. In this study, we employed fatty acid (FA) biomarkers as a preliminary attempt to trace and characterize trophic pathways in food webs of four tropical lakes of volcanic origin in Luzon Island, Philippines - three clustered maar lakes (Yambo, Pandin and Calibato) and a large caldera lake (Taal). These lakes have a long history of human disturbance but limited ecological data. Knowledge of basal food sources and existing trophic dynamics of organisms are generally non-existent. Particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, and fish species were collected in August 2019 from the study lakes as representative of three trophic guilds. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted to analyse FA profiles and characterize trophic relationships between representative organisms. For the POM, within lakes comparison of taxon-specific FA profiles showed a significant difference between the surface and near bottom depths, with the former dominated by photoautorophs and the latter by chemotrophs, suggesting the ability of FAA to effectively delineate between micro-organisms. Between lakes comparison also showed significant difference between the caldera and maar lakes, with the latter containing higher composition of bacterial FA, reminiscent of the considerably smaller lakes' response to the impact of unmitigated organic loadings from anthropogenic activities. Taken together with the primary consumers' FA profiles, analysis confirmed the ability of FAA to discriminate between FA profile sources. PCA explained >70% of the variance in the FA compositions for three trophic guilds in the two deepest lakes, which delineated both zooplankton and fish species food selectivity in each lake, alluding to FAA's capacity to characterize dietary reliance of various species in an environment with numerous food sources. Studies have been devoted to describing the diet of D. monticola. However, knowledge of how D. monticola utilizes food resources through ontogeny remains unknown. We characterized D. monticola general dietary patterns and tested for ontogenetic diet shifts. We also inferred on juvenile recruitment patterns. We examined the stomach contents of 120 specimens ranging in size from 20 to 154 mm in standard length (SL). To infer on recruitment periodicity, we examined the size of specimens deposited in museum collections to compile size frequencies by month. We assume that the occurrence of smaller-size class categories will shed light on their recruitment time. Our results show that D. monticola is an omnivore that largely feeds on aquatic insects but also includes detritus, terrestrial material, fishes and crustaceans. Our analysis did not detect strong changes in diet through ontogeny, instead some changes were detected but mainly on the percentage of some food items included at different size category classes. In regards to the recruitment periodicity, we found younger D. monticola (20-40 mm SL) throughout most of the year, suggesting that they may be reproducing for longer periods of time than those previously reported from Honduras. The heavy metal contamination of river sediments by domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste is a major ecological and environmental problem. Therefore, heavy metal concentration and its associated risk were assessed in the sediments from the entry point of Sutlej River in Indian Punjab to its tail end when the river leaves India. The sediment samples (N = 47) were collected from the Sutlej River during April, 2018 and analyzed for heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn). Results showed that the metal concentration in sediments was higher along the transboundary of the river. The average concentration of metals in sediments was in the order: Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Cr > Co > Ni > Cd > As. The concentration of Cd in the sediments only exceeded the threshold values of metal concentration. Principle component analysis indicated that geogenic sources are primarily associated with metal concentration in sediments before river's entry point in Punjab. In contrast, agronomic and industrial sources are related to the origin of metals in the river flowing in Indian state of Punjab. The contamination factor and potential ecological risk index results showed that Cd is the primary contaminant in the sediments of the Sutlej River. Spatial distribution maps of risk indices showed the higher risk values along the transboundary of the river in Indian Punjab. These results suggest that strategic management practices and policies across municipal, industrial, and agricultural sectors are required to reduce the metal concentration in the Sutlej River. Aims: Although Sinai is a global hotspot for desert vegetation, there is no well‐documented overview of the Sinai vegetation. We aim to provide a phytosociological overview of Sinai desert vegetation based on an extensive database and formal classification. We further aim to describe the vegetation communities and provide information on their distribution. Location: Sinai, Egypt. Methods: We built a comprehensive database utilizing all available vegetation plot data of the study area from published literature and our field surveys. We determined the database clustering tendency (Hopkins' test analysis) and estimated its optimal number of clusters (Elbow method). We performed a cluster analysis (modified TWINSPAN) and improved the validity of the resulting groups by approximating natural clustering using the Silhouette algorithm. We visualized the results by calculating Non‐metric Multidimensional Scaling and drawing distribution maps for the observed vegetation communities. Results: We distinguished nine classes representing Sinai desert vegetation: Salicornietea fruticosae, Retametea raetam, Haloxylonetea salicornici, Retamo‐Tamaricetea fluviatilis, Acacietea tortilis, Artemisietea herbae‐albae, Anabasietea articulatae, Chiliadenetea iphionoidis, and Stellarietea mediae. We distinguished 25 vegetation groups, of which seven are new findings, representing four main vegetation groups: salt desert, lowland desert, mountain desert, and ruderal desert. We observed a high diversity in life forms, chorotypes, and alpha‐diversity of the vegetation among the main groups. Therophytes, chamaephytes, hemicryptophytes, and phanerophytes are the dominant life forms. Prevailing chorotypes are Saharo‐Arabian, Mediterranean, Mediterranean‐Irano‐Turanian and Irano‐Turanian‐Saharo‐Arabian. The salt desert and lowland desert vegetation are species‐poor, whereas the mountain desert vegetation is relatively species‐rich. The ruderal desert vegetation is the most species‐rich. Conclusion: We present a common classification of Sinai desert vegetation based on cutting‐edge methods and provide an updated description of the desert vegetation groups of Sinai. Introduction: The Humid Mountain Forest (HMF) has the highest number of plants per unit of surface, whose vegetation grows under heterogeneous environmental conditions and possess a high floristic variation. HMF conservation is important due to the biodiversity it harbors and the environmental services it provides. Objective: This work evaluated the effect of the terrain aspect and density of the forest canopy on the structure and tree diversity in La Martinica Protected Natural Area, Mexico. Methods: Stratified sampling was performed in four terrain aspects and two canopy density conditions. Twenty five sampling units of 20 x 25 m were considered, in which the normal diameter (ND), total height and the largest and smallest diameters of the crown of the individuals with a ND = 10 cm were registered. The diversity was estimated by rarefaction curves and the structure was analyzed through the importance value index (IVI) and the forest value index (FVI). Results: 37 species belonging to 30 genera and 24 families were recorded. Greater diversity was observed in the north terrain aspect and in the closed canopy. Tree species with the highest structural values were different between terrain aspect and canopy types; Carpinus tropicalis presented the highest values in the zenithal terrain aspect, Lippia myriocephala in the east and south terrain aspect, and Liquidambar styraciflua in the north. In both canopy types Lippia myriocephala obtained the highest IVI values and FVI in the open canopy; Carpinus tropicalis reached a higher FVI in the closed canopy. Conclusions: Tree structure was different in the four terrain aspects and two canopy conditions studied. The greatest difference in species composition and diversity was observed between the north and east terrain aspects; the north presented the highest richness values, frequent and dominant species. Ordination is the name given to a group of methods used to analyse multiple variables without preceding hypotheses. Over the last few decades, the use of these methods in Earth science in general, and notably in analyses of sedimentary sources, has dramatically increased. However, with limited resources oriented towards Earth scientists on the topic, the application of ordination analysis is at times suboptimal and misuse by authors can occur. This text was written for researchers with little to no experience with ordination with the aim of exposing them to the utility and the pitfalls of this branch of exploratory statistics. To do so, a detailed review of three ordination methods is offered: principal component analysis, non‐metric multidimensional scaling and detrended correspondence analysis. A survey of 163 publications in Earth science is presented, in which these ordination methods were used together with a summary of how, why and on what type of data ordination was used. With common mistakes outlined and misuses in those publications identified. Notably, issues were found with reproducibility, documentation, data set dimensions and transformations. Based on this survey, a recommended workflow is offered for Earth scientists who wish to apply ordination. Admixture can act to expand genetic variation and generate new trait combinations or functional trait values compared to parental lines. We examined how admixture between geographically distinct and/or genetically distinct parental genotypes could create either expanded genetic variation or novel phenotypes in the recombinant individuals of a F2 population of Arabidopsis thaliana accessions. In three different experiments, we grew 13 F2's of Arabidopsis that differ in the genetic distance and/or geographic location of their parental source. The experiments tested the response of F2 recombinant populations to drought, high temperature and overwintering in field conditions. We estimated a multi-trait phenotypic space based on phenology, growth and fitness traits using a non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis. We found that approximately half (51%) of the F2 recombinant populations across the different experiments shifted their phenotype and occupied a different phenotypic space than their parents. Fitness changes in shifted recombinant F2's populations depended upon the experimental conditions. A shift in the phenotypic space was associated with an increase in fitness under drought conditions but the opposite was true under high temperature conditions where the non-shifted F2 recombinant populations had a higher fitness. Therefore, one recombinant event following admixture was sufficient to shift offspring phenotypes away from parental phenotypes in half of admixture events and the resulting phenotypic shifts could result in a fitness increase under specific environmental conditions. Our study provides experimental evidence that admixture can provide a rapid shift in plant phenotypes with a resulting increase in fitness suggesting that such events are an important mechanism for rapid evolution post-introduction. Background Grassland plays an important role in the ecosystem, but overgrazing harms the grassland system in many places. Grazing prohibition is an effective method to restore grassland ecosystems, and it plays a great role in realizing the sustainable development of grassland systems. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out research on the influence of regional grazing prohibition on the physical and chemical properties of different grassland systems. Methods In Potatso National Park, Southwest China, we selected experimental plots in the artificial grazing meadow area to study the effects of grazing prohibition on plant and soil indexes in subalpine meadows and swamp meadows. We investigated the biomass and species diversity of grazing prohibition treatment and grazing treatment plots and sampled and tested the soil index. The variation percentage was used to remove the original heterogeneity and yearly variation, allowing us to compare differences in plant index and soil index values between grazing prohibition and grazing treatments. Results Grazing prohibition increased the aboveground biomass, total biomass, total meadow coverage, average height, richness index, Shannon diversity index and evenness index and reduced the belowground biomass and root/shoot ratio in the subalpine meadow and swamp meadow. Additionally, grazing prohibition reduced the pH and soil bulk density and increased the soil total carbon, soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, soil hydrolyzable nitrogen, soil total phosphorus and soil available phosphorus in the subalpine meadow and swamp meadow. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis showed that both plant indexes and soil indexes were significantly different between grazing and grazing prohibition treatments and between meadow types. Short-term grazing prohibition had a great impact on improving the fertility of meadow soil in the study area. We suggest that long-term and extensive research should be carried out to promote the restoration and sustainable development of regional grassland systems.

Farming operation and amino acid profiles of pond-reared Chinese mitten crabs, Eriocheir sinensis (Milne Edwards, 1853), collected from different areas in Jiangsu Province, China were investigated and compared with the aim to elucidate how farming practices affected the nutritional values of three edible tissues (muscle, hepatopancreas and gonad) of crab. The crab pond aquaculture practices including snail input, macrophytes coverage, total commercial feed, the ratio of trash fish to total feed, were much higher in Gaochun and Jintan than that in other sites (having larger pond size), which leads to higher average individual body weight and commercial yields. Further, the mean body weight, muscle weight, carapace length and width, and the ratio of gonad to hepatopancreas were significantly higher in Jintan, Suzhou and Gaochun areas than in other regions. Amino acid assessment showed that all crabs collected delivered high-quality protein (Amino acid score >1 except Valine), the main amino acids being glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and alanine. Significant differences in amino acid profiles were observed between sites, tissues and sexes. Muscles were rich in total amino acids, essential amino acids, and delicious amino acids, followed by gonads and hepatopancreas. The contents of essential amino acids in crab muscles from Gaochun, Jintan, Suzhou and Guannan were significantly higher than those from Suqian, Sihong and Xinghua. All the amino acids except Serine and Glycine were significantly higher in gonads from males than from females. The redundancy analysis revealed that the snail input, trash fish ratio to the total feed, macrophytes coverage and total trash fish supply explained 84.3% of the variation in the amino acid content and structure in crabs from Gaochun, Jintan and Suzhou. Overall, our results show that mitten crabs collected in Jiangsu province had good nutritional quality suitable for human dietary needs, and that farming practices, especially degree of fish-source protein feeding, influence the amino acids composition of crabs.

Insects are one of the most important biomass components in a forest ecosystem and estimating their species richness can provide a suitable perspective for biodiversity assesments. The present study compares three methods of collecting some beetles in beech forest in Golestan Province of northern Iran. For this purpose, 12 plots were selected, and besides direct sampling, in each of them, one window and two pitfall traps were installed. Based on the results, a total of 226 species belonging to 3341 specimens were collected, of which 635 specimens with direct sampling, 694 specimens by the pitfall traps and 2012 specimens by the window traps were collected. Species richness in the window traps increased at a higher rate in comparison to the other methods. The results of non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) showed that the species composition in each sampling method is significantly different, so that out of the total of 226 identified species, 22 species were common in the three sampling methods but 93, 39 and 23 species were caught only in the window trap, pitfall trap and direct sampling, respectively. In this study, an undescribed species of Scraptia (family Scraptiidae) was collected by window traps. Additionally, the indicator species of pitfall traps, direct sampling and window traps with highest index value of 0.7544, 0.5000, and 0.7500 were Geotrupes spiniger (Scarabaeidae), Uleiota planata (Silvanidae) and Megathous menentriesi (Elateridae), respectively. A checklist of the oribatid mite species from two boreal fens in Northern Ontario, Canada is presented. 174 peat soil samples, collected between 2015–2020, yielded a heterogeneous assemblage of 80 species, 57 genera and 33 families. Species richness and diversity were significantly higher in a Sphagnum-dominated fen (69 species) compared to a Carex-dominated fen (51 species), and although 40 species were found at both sites, overall composition was significantly different between the two sites. We also present an update to the seminal work of Behan-Pelletier and Bissett (1994) on Oribatida of Canadian peatlands with 45 new species records for peatlands. Records for the parthenogenetic families Brachychthoniidae Thor, 1934 and Suctobelbidae Jacot, 1938 were considerably expanded, but other families such as Punctoribatidae, Thor, 1937 remain poorly represented in Canadian peatlands. Taken together, species richness estimates range from 86–105 species based on our sampling and the number of undescribed species recorded suggests that the oribatid mite fauna still need further examination to encompass their actual biodiversity in peatlands. We report that the oribatid mite fauna of Canadian peatlands comprise 186 species that includes all published records as of February 2021 and species presented here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
