Whole-genome sequencing projects are increasingly populating the tree of life and characterizing biodiversity1-4. Sparse taxon sampling has previously been proposed to confound phylogenetic inference5, and captures only a fraction of the genomic diversity. Here we report a substantial step towards the dense representation of avian phylogenetic and molecular diversity, by analysing 363 genomes from 92.4% of bird families-including 267 newly sequenced genomes produced for phase II of the Bird 10,000 Genomes (B10K) Project. We use this comparative genome dataset in combination with a pipeline that leverages a reference-free whole-genome alignment to identify orthologous regions in greater numbers than has previously been possible and to recognize genomic novelties in particular bird lineages. The densely sampled alignment provides a single-base-pair map of selection, has more than doubled the fraction of bases that are confidently predicted to be under conservation and reveals extensive patterns of weak selection in predominantly non-coding DNA. Our results demonstrate that increasing the diversity of genomes used in comparative studies can reveal more shared and lineage-specific variation, and improve the investigation of genomic characteristics. We anticipate that this genomic resource will offer new perspectives on evolutionary processes in cross-species comparative analyses and assist in efforts to conserve species.

Introduction: Urbanization, characterized by the rapid expansion of human settlements and development, greatly impacts biodiversity, especially where developments and human settlements are not guided by proper environmental consideration. Methods: We used data collected through citizen science projects under the African Bird Atlas Project, based on standardized protocols to gather bird occurrence data. Species' ecological traits, related to foraging behavior, habitat speciality, and body mass, were analyzed to assess functional richness and functional diversity (FD) represented by Rao's quadratic entropy. Geospatial data, including the Global Human Settlement Layer and Human Modification Index (HMI), along with the probability of urban expansion up to 2030, were integrated to examine the impact of urbanization using Bayesian models. Results: Our findings reveal a marked decline in taxonomic richness, diversity, and functional richness associated with increasing urbanization and human modification, with a similar pattern observed along the gradient from mostly uninhabited areas to cities. However, FD increased with urbanization from uninhabited areas to cities. The relationship between FD and HMI was nonlinear, showing an initial negative trend that became positive as HMI increased. This suggests a transition in bird communities, where generalist species thrive in urban environments, potentially replacing specialized species and leading to functional redundancy. Discussion: Despite the complex relationships observed, urbanization has a predominantly negative impact on the richness and diversity of Afrotropical bird communities. The decline in avian diversity and functional richness has important implications for ecosystem functions and services, crucial for biodiversity and human well-being. Our research provides valuable insights into the ecological impacts of urban expansion and emphasizes the importance of preserving natural habitats amidst growing urban landscapes. Raptors exert top‐down influences on ecosystems via their effects on prey population dynamics and community composition. Most raptors are sympatric with other predators, thus complicating our understanding of their relative influence in these systems. Estimates of kill rates and prey biomass recycling have been used as predation metrics that allow quantitative comparison among species and assessment of the relative role of single species within complex food webs. Few studies have produced findings of kill rates or prey biomass recycling for raptors. We used a supervised machine learning algorithm to behaviourally classify high resolution accelerometer informed GPS locations of tagged adult non‐breeding martial eagles Polemaetus bellicosus in the Maasai Mara region of Kenya to estimate kill rates and prey biomass recycling. Eagle locations classified as feeding were clustered using distance and time thresholds to identify kills and calculate kill rates. Identified kill sites were quickly ground‐truthed to confirm kills and identify prey species. We estimated kill rates for martial eagles at 0.59 kills day‐1 for males and 0.38 kills day‐1 for females, and we estimated biomass recycling per ground‐truthed kill at 1796 g for males and 3860 g for females. From our sample of identified ground‐truthed kills, 'gamebirds' was the most frequently recorded prey category for male eagles and 'small ungulates' was the most frequently recorded prey category for female eagles. These results position martial eagles close to sympatric mammalian top predators in trophic pyramids and provide evidence for their classification as a top predator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production is a promising route for alternative energetics. Understanding structure–activity relationships is a crucial step towards the rational design of photocatalysts, which requires the application of operando spectroscopy under relevant working conditions. We performed an operando investigation on a catalytic system during the photodeposition of Pt on TiO2 and photostimulated H2 production, using simultaneous laboratory X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), UV–Vis spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. XAS showed a progressive increase in Pt fluorescence for Pt deposited on TiO2 for over an hour, which is correlated with the signal of the produced H2. The final Pt/TiO2 catalyst contained Pt(0) particles. The electronic features corresponding to the Pt4+ species in the UV–Vis spectrum of the solution disappear as soon as UV radiation is applied in the presence of formic acid, which acts as a hole scavenger, resulting in the presence of Pt(0) particles in solution. Sharpe’s Longclaw Macronyx sharpei is an endangered Kenyan endemic bird restricted to high-altitude grasslands with long tussocks. The species occurs on the grasslands surrounding Lake Ol’Bolossat in Nyandarua, Kenya, an area that is globally recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. The grasslands receive little conservation measures, which have led to the decline in the population density of Sharpe’s Longclaw. Nesting success in birds is crucial for their population growth. The daily survival rate for natural nests of Sharpe’s Longclaw in the grasslands of Lake Ol’Bolossat had not been systematically assessed prior to this study. Natural nests were actively searched during the breeding seasons of March–May 2016, while artificial nests were constructed using dry grass containing artificial eggs made of cream modeling clay. Natural nests had a higher daily nest survival percentage than artificial nests. The highest daily nest survival rate was 40% and the lowest 0.01%. Predators, livestock grazing and fires greatly reduced the survival of nestlings. We recommend intensive ecological management of the high-altitude grasslands of Lake Ol’Bolossat.
