Theoretical prediction of interfacial capacitance in graphene-based supercapacitors is crucial to accelerating materials' design and development cycles. However, there is currently a significant gap between ab initio predictions and experimental reports, particularly in the case of nitrogen-doped graphene. Analyses based on changes to the density of states of freestanding graphene upon doping do not account for the electronic interactions between the electrode, dopants, and substrates. The result is an overestimation of the doping-induced capacitance increase by up to two orders of magnitude. Moreover, it is unclear whether electrolyte and solvent interactions can further complicate matters by inducing changes to the band structure and, therefore, the capacitive properties of the electrode. A third complication lies in the fixed-band approximation, where materials are simulated without accounting for the influence of an external electrical field. In this work, we present an interfacial modeling and characterization procedure that leverages the combined strengths of ab-initio molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and microscopic polarization theory to produce reliable predictions of interfacial capacitance. The procedure is applied to two case studies of interest in supercapacitor design: (1) nitrogen-doped graphene on a Cu(111) substrate and (2) an interface between bulk water and Cu(111)-supported graphene at room temperature. Results show that water alters graphene's band structure from a semi-metallic to an n-doped-semiconducting character and that metallic substrates dominate the band structure of the electrode interface even in the presence of dopants. Accurate Force Fields (FFs) are essential for Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of the dynamics of realistic materials in terms of atomic-level interactions. The FF parameters of short-range valence interactions can be derived through Quantum Mechanical (QM) calculations on model systems practical for QM (<300 atoms). Similarly, the dynamic electrostatic interactions can be described with methods such as QEq or PQEq that allow charges and polarization to adjust dynamically. However, accurately extracting long-range van der Waals (vdW) interactions from QM calculations poses challenges due to the absence of a definitive method to distinguish between the different energetic components of electrostatics, polarization, vdW, hydrogen bonding, and valence interactions. To do this we use the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof flavor of Density Functional Theory, including empirical D3 vdW corrections, to predict the Equation of State for each element (keeping any covalent bonds fixed), from which we obtain the two-body vdW nonbond potential. Here, we extend these calculations to include non-bonded parameters for the N and O columns of the periodic table so that we now describe columns 15 (N), 16 (O), 17 (F), and 18 (Ne) of the periodic table. For these 20 elements, we find that the two-body vdW potentials can all be mapped to a single universal two-body curve, with just three scaling parameters: Re, De, and L. We refer to this as the Universal NonBond (UNB) potential. The agri-food industry, produces organic residues that could be reused as fertilizer, thereby allowing the recycling of nutrients for crops and the replacement of mineral fertilizers. In this context, here we examined the capacity of anaerobic digestates and mixed residues (digestates plus spent mushroom substrates) to supply nutrients to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in a greenhouse experiment. Moreover, the potential leaching of nutrients into the soil was evaluated in a column assay. The results obtained from organic residues treatments were then compared to those achieved in soil treated with mineral fertilizer and in untreated soil. Digestates treatments minimized the potential risk of nitrate (NO3−) leaching by allowing the slow release of NO3− maintaining crop yield. Given our observations, this type of organic residues emerges as an alternative to mineral fertilizer. The loss of NO3−-N from the total amount of N applied reached ∼3% in the mixed residues treatments, 36–46% in the digestate treatments, and 68% in the mineral fertilizer treatment. The mixed treatments showed low available N content as a result of immobilization in the soil, which is a limiting factor for crop production. Moreover, the organic residues treatments had no negative effect on lettuce seed germination or plant growth with respect to parameters such as chlorophyll, total polyphenols, and heavy metals in aerial biomass. The findings reported herein contribute to a better understanding of nutrient availability provided by organic residues materials and the capacity of these amendments to replace mineral fertilizers and avoid nutrient loss by leaching. Digestate treatments showed a similar capacity to maintain lettuce production as mineral fertilizer. Mixed treatments did not provide mineral N for the crop by N immobilization in soil. Nitrate loss when organic residues were applied was lower than for the mineral fertilizer treatment. Soil amendment with organic residues has no negative effects on lettuce yield. Nitrogen availability in the rhizosphere relies on root‐microorganism interactions, where root exudates trigger soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition through the rhizosphere priming effect (RPE). Though microbial necromass contribute significantly to organically bound soil nitrogen (N), the role of RPEs in regulating necromass recycling and plant nitrogen acquisition has received limited attention. We used 15N natural abundance as a proxy for necromass‐N since necromass is enriched in 15N compared to other soil‐N forms. We combined studies using the same experimental design for continuous 13CO2 labelling of various plant species and the same soil type, but considering top‐ and subsoil. RPE were quantified as difference in SOM‐decomposition between planted and unplanted soils. Results showed higher plant N uptake as RPEs increased. The positive relationship between 15N‐enrichment of shoots and roots and RPEs indicated an enhanced necromass‐N turnover by RPE. Moreover, our data revealed that RPEs were saturated with increasing carbon (C) input via rhizodeposition in topsoil. In subsoil, RPEs increased linearly within a small range of C input indicating a strong effect of root‐released C on decomposition rates in deeper soil horizons. Overall, this study confirmed the functional importance of rhizosphere C input for plant N acquisition through enhanced necromass turnover by RPEs. Summary statement: Interactions between roots and microorganisms in the rhizosphere enhance nitrogen availability through the rhizosphere priming effect (RPE). The growing use of anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) in processing organic waste has led to a significant digestate production. To effectively recycle digestate back into soils, it is crucial to understand how operational variables in the AcoD process influence the conversion of organic matter (OM). To address this, a combination of biochemical fractionation and various soil incubation tests were employed to assess the stability of OM in digestates generated from anaerobic continuous reactors fed with a food waste-hay mixture and operating at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) and organic loading rates (OLR). This study revealed that digester performance and operating parameters impacted carbon dynamics in soils. A decrease in the carbon mineralization in soils when increasing the HRT was reported (48 ± 4 % for 70 days compared to 59 ± 1 % for 42 days). Specific HRT and OLR values were found to be linked to carbon accessibility and complexity, confirming that longer HRT lead to higher OM removal and increased complexity in soluble OM, despite minor discrepancies in relative carbon distribution. Furthermore, comparable rates of nitrogen mineralization in soils were observed for all digestates, consistent with the accessibility of nitrogen from the particulate OM. Nevertheless, AcoD converted substrates with the potential to immobilize nitrogen in soils into fast-acting fertilizers. Summary: Ectomycorrhizal fungi are essential for nitrogen (N) cycling in many temperate forests and responsive to anthropogenic N addition, which generally decreases host carbon (C) allocation to the fungi. In the boreal region, however, ectomycorrhizal fungal biomass has been found to correlate positively with soil N availability. Still, responses to anthropogenic N input, for instance through atmospheric deposition, are commonly negative.To elucidate whether variation in N supply affects ectomycorrhizal fungi differently depending on geographical context, we investigated ectomycorrhizal fungal communities along fertility gradients located in two nemo‐boreal forest regions with similar ranges in soil N : C ratios and inorganic N availability but contrasting rates of N deposition.Ectomycorrhizal biomass and community composition remained relatively stable across the N gradient with low atmospheric N deposition, but biomass decreased and the community changed more drastically with increasing N availability in the gradient subjected to higher rates of N deposition. Moreover, potential activities of enzymes involved in ectomycorrhizal mobilisation of organic N decreased as N availability increased.In forests with low external input, we propose that stabilising feedbacks in tree‐fungal interactions maintain ectomycorrhizal fungal biomass and communities even in N‐rich soils. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 on the bacterial community and nitrogen metabolism genes in the aerobic composting of pig manure. The experimental treatments were set up as control (C), 1% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 2% MgSO4 (CaPM1), and 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 (CaPM2), which were used at the end of composting for potting trials. The results showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 played an excellent role in retaining nitrogen and increasing the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents of the composts. Adding Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 changed the microbial community structure of the compost. The microorganisms associated with nitrogen retention were activated. The complexity of the microbial network was enhanced. Genetic prediction analysis showed that the addition of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduced the accumulation of nitroso-nitrogen and the process of denitrification. At the same time, despite the reduction of genes related to nitrogen fixation, the conversion of ammonia to nitrogenous organic compounds was promoted and the stability of nitrogen was increased. Mantel test analysis showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 can affect nitrogen transformation-related bacteria and thus indirectly affect nitrogen metabolism genes by influencing the temperature, pH, and organic matter (OM) of the compost and also directly affected nitrogen metabolism genes through PO43− and Mg2+. The pot experiment showed that composting with 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 produced the compost product that improved the growth yield and nutrient content of cilantro and increased the fertility of the soil. In conclusion, Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduces the loss of nitrogen from compost, activates nitrogen-related bacteria and genes in the thermophilic phase of composting, and improves the fertilizer efficiency of compost products. Soil nutrient storage and sequestration effects are closely related to the stability of alpine grassland ecosystems, and the study of soil nutrient storage and sequestration effects in alpine grasslands with different degradation levels is of great significance to the recovery of alpine grassland vegetation. On this basis, four alpine grasslands with different degrees of degradation (non-degraded, lightly degraded, moderately degraded, and heavily degraded) were selected in Maqu County, Gannan, and soil samples were collected from 0–10, 10–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm, respectively, and analyzed for nutrients in terms of storage and sequestration effects. The results showed that soil water content decreased with increasing degradation, while soil pH, bulk density, and conductivity tended to increase. The storage and sequestration effects of soil organic carbon decreased with increasing degradation. And the storage and sequestration effects of soil total nitrogen and total phosphorus were smallest for moderately degraded soils in the 10–60 cm soil layer. Soil water content and soil bulk density were co-influences on soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus storage. For the soil organic carbon sequestration effect, soil total nitrogen sequestration effect and soil pH were the two most important influencing factors, and the soil total nitrogen and total phosphorus sequestration effect were greatly influenced by soil organic carbon sequestration effect. In addition, soil bulk density was also the main influencing factor of soil total nitrogen sequestration effect, and the impact of soil total nitrogen sequestration on soil total phosphorus sequestration was also greatly influenced. Interactions between carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), the vital indicators of ecological restoration, play an important role in signaling the health of ecosystems. Rapidly and accurately mapping foliar C, N, and P is essential for interpreting community structure, nutrient limitation, and primary production during ecosystem recovery. However, research on how to rapidly map C, N, and P in restored areas with mixed plant communities is limited. This study employed laser imaging, detection, and ranging (LiDAR) and hyperspectral data to extract spectral, textural, and height features of vegetation as well as vegetation indices and structural parameters. Causal band, multiple linear regression, and random forest models were developed and tested in a restored area in northern China. Important parameters were identified including (1), for C, red-edge bands, canopy height, and vegetation structure; for N, textural features, height percentile of 40–95%, and vegetation structure; for P, spectral features, height percentile of 80%, and 1 m foliage height diversity. (2) R2 was used to compare the accuracy of the three models as follows: R2 values for C were 0.07, 0.42, and 0.56, for N they were 0.20, 0.48, and 0.53, and for P they were 0.32, 0.39, and 0.44; the random forest model demonstrated the highest accuracy. (3) The accuracy of the concentration estimates could be ranked as C > N > P. (4) The inclusion of LiDAR features significantly improved the accuracy of the C concentration estimation, with increases of 22.20% and 47.30% in the multiple linear regression and random forest models, respectively, although the inclusion of LiDAR features did not notably enhance the accuracy of the N and P concentration estimates. Therefore, LiDAR and hyperspectral data can be used to effectively map C, N, and P concentrations in a mixed plant community in a restored area, revealing their heterogeneity in terms of species and spatial distribution. Future efforts should involve the use of hyperspectral data with additional bands and a more detailed classification of plant communities. Nitrogen (N) depolymerization and mineralization in soils are catalyzed by extracellular enzymes, notably proteolytic and chitinolytic enzymes. However, there is limited knowledge of pH optima of these N‐hydrolytic soil enzymes, potentially missing insights to soil pH effects on N cycling and requiring assumptions on pH optima in enzyme activity assays. We evaluated pH optima of five N‐hydrolytic enzymes (casein protease, leucine aminopeptidase, glycine aminopeptidase, alanine aminopeptidase, N‐acetyl‐β‐glucosaminidase) in soils under long‐term (145‐year) fertilization and crop rotation treatments, as well as a restored prairie, on an Aquic Argiudoll. We additionally tested the pH dependency of three types of non‐enzymatic interferences in order to assess the relative importance of controls in determining N‐hydrolytic enzyme activity pH optima. For all enzymes, pH–activity relationships varied by soil and exhibited secondary pH optima, though primary pH optima generally agreed with values reported for purified, non‐soil enzymes. Enzyme activity pH optima did not reflect soil pH, though soil pH ranged 6.2–7.4 across 145‐year treatments. Nonenzymatic interference was generally pH‐dependent and soil‐specific for protease and N‐acetyl‐β‐glucosaminidase. Though omitting controls for dissolved organic matter tended to have the largest effect on pH optima misestimation, controlling for all three sources of interference had appreciable effects on estimated pH optima values. This study provides a benchmark of empirically determined pH optima of multiple hydrolytic enzymes that catalyze soil N depolymerization. We demonstrate that soil N‐hydrolytic enzyme activities exhibit pH optima that generally vary most by enzyme type, and specifically between proteolytic versus chitinolytic enzymes. Because pH optima of these soil enzyme activities can vary among soils differing in management and land use, pH optima should be determined a priori. Large mammalian herbivores substantially impact ecosystem functioning. As their populations are dramatically altered globally, disentangling their consumptive and non‐consumptive effects is critical to advance mechanistic understanding and improve prediction of effects over ecosystem and Earth‐system spatial extents. Mathematical models have played an important role in clarifying potential mechanisms of herbivore zoogeochemistry, based mostly on their consumptive effects as primary consumers and recyclers of organic and inorganic matter via defecation and urination. Trampling is a ubiquitous effect among walking vertebrates, but the consequences and potential mechanisms of trampling in diverse environments remain poorly understood.We derive a novel mathematical model of large mammalian herbivore effects on ecosystem nitrogen cycling, focusing on how trampling and environmental context impact soil processes. We model herbivore trampling with a linear positive or negative additive effect on soil‐mediated nitrogen cycling processes.Combining analytical and numerical analyses, we find trampling by large mammalian herbivores is likely to decrease nitrogen mineralisation rate across diverse environments, such as temperate grassland and boreal forest. These effects are mediated by multiple potential mechanisms, including trampling‐induced changes to detritivore biomass and functioning (e.g. rate of organic matter consumption). We also uncover scenarios where trampling can increase nitrogen mineralisation rate, contingent on the environment‐specific relative sensitivity of detritivore mineral‐nitrogen release and detritivore mortality, to trampling.In contrast to some consumptive mechanisms, our results suggest the pace of soil nitrogen cycling prior to trampling has little influence over the direction of the trampling net effect on nitrogen mineralisation, but that net effects may be greater in slow‐cycling systems (e.g. boreal forests) than in fast‐cycling systems (e.g. grasslands).Our model clarifies the potential consequences of previously overlooked mechanisms of zoogeochemistry that are common to all terrestrial biomes. Our results provide empirically testable predictions to guide future progress in empirical and theoretical studies of herbivore effects in diverse environmental contexts. Abiotic resource limitation presents organisms with a dilemma about how to use resources when they become available. Characterizing how resource allocation affects investment in growth or defensive traits that affect organismal survival strategies allows us to understand the environmental contexts in which species interact. Our goal was to measure how macronutrient availability drives nitrogen and phosphorus allocation towards functional growth and defensive chemical traits of the Neotropical passion vine, Passiflora biflora.We investigated this question with a paired field study in La Selva, Costa Rica and a full factorial greenhouse experiment to determine whether the concentration of a key secondary chemical defence is driven by nitrogen availability. We correlated defensive chemical concentration with soil nitrogen availability in naturally occurring plants, measured the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus availability on growth and secondary chemical defence traits in the greenhouse and characterized the P. biflora leaf metabolome to assess how nutrient availability affected shifts in metabolism related to plant fitness.We found that nutrient allocation increased the magnitude of both growth and defence traits. Increased nitrogen availability resulted in higher concentrations of toxic leaf secondary chemicals, longer vines, greater biomass and more leaves with a superior ability to capture sunlight. In addition, plants from high nitrogen environments had metabolomes with significantly greater secondary metabolite richness and biochemical pathway diversity, as well as increases in the number of metabolites from several chemical classes related to basic cell function and defence. Nutrient availability had no significant effect on the richness and diversity of primary metabolites involved in basic cell functions. A direct comparison of the relative strength of quantitative growth and secondary defence traits indicated that P. biflora favours nutrient allocation to growth at low nitrogen levels but invests in both strategies more evenly as nitrogen availability increases.These findings lead us to predict that passion vines are better prepared to tolerate and resist herbivory when nutrients are plentiful and experience a trade‐off between growth and chemical defence against natural enemies when they are scarce. These findings are consistent with both the 'escape' and 'defend' syndromes that are often used to describe tropical plant survival strategies. This is one of the only studies to measure nutrient allocation in vines, a group comprising a significant percentage of global plant diversity. Limited information is available about potential physicochemical changes that can occur in hydrochar post-production, e.g. during drying and storage. Understanding these changes is crucial not just for shaping future research plans, but also for future practical applications. Here we studied the effect of moisture (69.2% and 2.4%) and three storage temperatures (− 18, 4, and 20 °C) over a year on selected organic and inorganic compounds in hydrochar produced from the Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of digested cow manure. Comparison of the control wet hydrochars (WHs) and dry hydrochars (DHs) showed changes in organic compound composition due to drying. Overall, the total amount of the selected organic compounds was notably greater in WH (15.2 g kg−1 DM) compared to DH (11.8 g kg−1 DM), with variations observed in individual compound concentrations. Drying, however, had no significant influence on the identified inorganic compounds. Storage caused significant changes in both WH and DH, particularly in organic compounds after 12 weeks. Sugars (2–sevenfold), acids (36–371%), and aromatics (58–120%) in stored samples at week 52 were significantly higher than their control values. Changes in the inorganic elements (e.g., Co, K, Mg, Mn, P, S, Sr, and Zn) occurred faster in WH, with significant differences starting from week 1 compared to their control values, while DH showed fewer changes. Based on these changes in both organic and inorganic content, we recommend the optimal storage conditions for future HTC studies to preserve hydrochar properties. Finally, we discussed potential applications for stored hydrochars, with DH showing greater stability, especially at − 18 °C, making it suitable for various applications. The hydrological regime is considered to be the major factor that affects the distribution of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi in wetlands. We aimed to investigate the responses of AM fungal community to different hydrological gradients. Illumina Miseq sequencing technology was used to study the AM fungal community structure in roots and rhizosphere soils of Phragmites australis in different moisture areas (dry area, alternating wet and dry area, and flooded area) in Mengjin Yellow River wetland. The rhizosphere soils and roots hosted different AM fungal communities. In roots, the AM fungal colonization and Chao1 richness in dry area were significantly higher than that in alternating wet and dry area and flooded area, but the community composition did not vary clearly under different water conditions. In rhizosphere soils, the Chao1 richness of AM fungi in flooded area was significantly higher than that in alternating wet and dry area and dry area, and the AM fungal community structure obviously differed across different areas. The redundancy analyses indicated that changes in the AM fungal community in soils were associated with altered soil properties, and the abundance of the dominant genus Glomus was mostly positively correlated with alkali‐hydrolyzable nitrogen in soils. This study aims to investigate the impact of diverse forest stand types and soil depths on soil ecological stoichiometry characteristics, shedding light on nutrient limitations and cycling patterns within the mid-subtropical forest ecosystem in southwest China during spring. The research focused on four representative forest stands situated in Fanjing Mountain: Castanopsis fargesii (C. fargesii), Cyclobalanopsis multiervis (C. multiervis), Cyclobalanopsis argyrotricha (C. argyrotricha), and Rhododendron argyrophyllum Franch (R. argyrophyllum). Sample plots were established in these forest types, and soil samples were collected from the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil layers in March, spring of 2023. Various soil parameters, including pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), soil microbial nitrogen (MBN), and soil microbial phosphorus (MBP) were measured, and their stoichiometric ratios were calculated. The findings of the study were as follows: (1) In the 0–20 cm soil layer, C. argyrotricha exhibited the highest soil organic carbon, followed by C. fargesii, C. multiervis, and R. argyrophyllum with the lowest content. No significant differences in soil organic carbon were observed among the four forests in the 20–40 cm soil layer. Additionally, C. argyrotricha displayed a significantly higher soil C:N ratio compared to other forest types in different soil layers. In the typical broad-leaved forest area of Fanjing Mountain, the TP was classified as deficient. (2) In the 0–20 cm soil layer, the MBC of C. fargesii surpassed C. multiervis, C. argyrotricha, and R. argyrophyllum by 26.59%, 42.92%, and 24.67%, respectively. There were no significant differences in soil MBC:MBP ratio and MBN:MBP ratio, regardless of forest species and soil depths. The low availability of soil nitrogen in different forest stand types in Fanjing Mountain strongly limits soil microorganism biomass. (3) The correlation between SOC, TN, TP, and their stoichiometric ratios varied across different soil layers. The concentration of linoleic and a-linolenic fatty acids (FA) in grasses can be increased through agronomic techniques; however, there is little information in this regard for tropical grasses. Therefore, the objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of N fertilization and regrowth age management on the FA profile of three tropical grasses. To do this, three plots of 100 m2 each were used for the species: Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D. Webster, U. humidicola (Rendle) Morrone & Zuloaga, and Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) B.K. Simon & S.W.L. Jacobs. The study was conducted during dry and rainy seasons. In each period, they were divided into two subplots and only one of them was fertilized. Grass sampling was carried out on days 20, 25, and 30 after fertilization. Five samples were taken from each subplot and an agronomic evaluation was made before each cut. The chemical composition and lipid profile were then determined. An ANOVA of a randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement was performed. The concentration of linoleic and a-linolenic acid was higher in M. maximus during drought (48.5 g 100 g-1 FA) and in U. humidicola during the rainy season (55.1 g 100 g-1 FA). This proportion was higher on day 20 (50.5 g 100 g-1 FA) compared to that recorded on days 25 and 30 (50.1 and 45.7 g 100 g-1 FA, respectively). The fertilized grasses had a higher concentration of linoleic and a-linolenic acid compared to the unfertilized ones (53.4 vs. 44.3 g 100 g-1 FA). It is concluded that fertilization with 50-20-00 (N-P-K) increases the proportion of linoleic and a-linolenic acids in grasses; however, such concentration decreases with increasing plant maturity. Establishing lucerne field is an efficient way to protect natural steppes, alleviate conflicts between meadows and livestock, and promote the development of animal husbandry. However, problems such as extensive field management, valuing yield over quality, and low resource utilization are endemic in production. Exploring reasonable cultivation patterns can contribute to improving the current situation of artificial grassland production and promoting the high-quality development of husbandry and prataculture. Lucerne the field experiment was carried out in Jingtai, Gansu Province, China in 2021–2022; this study compared and analyzed the effects of three cultivation patterns—ridge tillage with plastic film mulching (PM), ridge tillage with biodegradable film mulching (BM), and traditional flat planting (FP)—on soil water, heat, and fertilizer, as well as lucerne growth, yield, quality, and water and nitrogen use efficiency. The results show that: (1) during the growth period of lucerne, PM and BM treatments augment the average moisture content of the soil layer of 0–120 cm by 31.19% and 24.03% compared to the FP treatment, respectively. In the soil layer of 0–40 cm, PM and BM treatments abate the soil moisture content of the ridges by an average of 19.29% and 7.89% compared to that in the ditches, respectively. In the soil layer of 40–120 cm, PM and BM treatments elevate the soil moisture content of the ridges by 4.40% and 4.65% on average compared to that in the ditches, respectively. The average soil temperature in a soil layer of 5–25 cm shows PM > BM > FP. In contrast with the FP treatment, PM and BM treatments increase the soil temperature of the ridges by an average of 1.87 °C and 0.96 °C and decrease that of the ditches by an average of 0.47 °C and 0.46 °C, respectively. After two years of planting, the three cultivation patterns all promote the soil nutrient content. Compared to the FP treatment, PM and BM treatments increase the organic matter content by 9.94% and 19.94%, respectively. (2) Ridge tillage with film mulching can evidently stimulate the growth of lucerne and enhance yield and quality. Compared to the FP treatment, PM and BM treatments enhance plant height by an average of 15.37% and 4.04%, stem diameter by an average of 34.14% and 14.58%, yield by an average of 21.20% and 14.77%, crude protein content by an average of 13.47% and 7.68%, and relative feed value by an average of 8.71% and 4.41%, respectively. (3) During the two-year growing period, the irrigation amount of lucerne was 508.60–615.30 mm, and the evapotranspiration was 563.70–761.80 mm. Compared to the FP treatment, PM and BM treatments hoist water use efficiency by an average of 43.50% and 17.56%, nitrogen partial factor productivity by an average of 21.20% and 15.22%, and net income by an average of 14.78% and 11.05%, respectively. In summary, in ridge tillage, both ordinary film mulching and biodegradable film mulching can create a favorable soil environment for lucerne growth and heighten production effect. Conventional fertilizer management can destroy the structure of soil. Replacing chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers can improve soil quality and nitrogen use efficiency. We aimed to study the effects of organic fertilizer substitutions for chemical nitrogen fertilizer on soil fertility and nitrogen use efficiency in order to clarify the effectiveness of the available nutrient management measures in improving soil quality and increasing foxtail millet yield. A field experiment was carried out over two consecutive years, and a total of six treatments were set up: no fertilizer (CK), chemical nitrogen fertilizer alone (N), the substitution of 25% of chemical nitrogen fertilizer with bio-organic fertilizer (N25A1), the substitution of 25% of chemical nitrogen fertilizer with fermented mealworm manure (N25B1), the substitution of 50% of chemical nitrogen fertilizer with bio-organic fertilizer (N50A2), and the substitution of 50% of chemical nitrogen fertilizer with fermented mealworm manure (N50B2). The results of this study show the following: (1) Compared with chemical nitrogen fertilizer, the substitution of organic fertilizer for nitrogen fertilizer reduced the bulk density and solid phase of the soil, and it increased the total porosity, water content, liquid phase, and gas phase of the soil. (2) Compared with nitrogen fertilizer, the use of an organic fertilizer increased the contents of nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and total nitrogen in the soil by 13.59~52.56%, 4.47~18.27%, and 4.40~12.09%, respectively. The content of alkaline nitrogen increased by 1.70~32.37%, and the contents of soil available potassium, available phosphorus, and organic matter also increased. (3) The activities of sucrase, urease, glutaminase, and asparaginase were improved by replacing chemical nitrogen fertilizer with organic fertilizer. The N25 treatments performed better than the N50 treatments, and fermented mealworm manure performed better than biological organic fertilizer. (4) A moderate application of organic fertilizer (N25) can increase the grain yield, ear weight, grain weight, and 1000-grain weight of foxtail millet, whereas excessive application of organic fertilizer (N50) can reduce foxtail millet yield. (5) Replacing chemical nitrogen fertilizer with organic fertilizer can improve the agronomic use efficiency, physiological efficiency, biased productivity, harvest index, and apparent use efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer. In this study, the substitution of 25% of chemical nitrogen fertilizer with fermented mealworm manure was the best combination for restoring crop productivity and soil quality. Strawberries are by far the most produced soft fruit (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries) worldwide, with China and the US being the two countries with the most production. In the US, strawberries reached a farm gate value of more than USD 3 billion in 2023 and are predominantly grown in the open field on an annual cycle in hilled-up soil beds using plastic mulch (plasticulture). This process relies on adequate pre-plant fertilizer application for plant establishment and fruit development. In North Carolina (US), it is current practice to apply pre-plant fertilizer containing 67 nitrogen (N) kg/ha; however, with increasing fertilizer costs and environmental concerns, questions remain as to whether or not pre-plant full-spectrum fertilizer rates can be reduced and substituted with organic low-N fertilizer sources, such as Polysulphate, without impacting yield or fruit quality. For this reason, field trials were established to evaluate the impact of pre-plant fertilizer rates on strawberry production ('Camarosa'). Trials were conducted in the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 seasons at two locations in North Carolina. The following N-rate pre-plant fertilizer treatments were applied: 80.1, 67.3, 54.1, 41.1, 33.6, 28.0, and 0 kg/ha. NO3 and NH4 content were frequently assessed in each replicate in the raised bed profile between planting and spring fertilizer application. Marketable and total strawberry yields were assessed over 6 weeks in the spring of 2020 and 2021. Our trial results showed that, especially in sandy soil, N rapidly declined under plastic within the first 8 weeks after pre-plant fertilizer application. However, no impact between pre-plant fertilizer rates and plant yield was observed. Treatments that contained Polysulphate and lower amounts of full-spectrum fertilizer showed significantly lower N concentrations in the soil while maintaining similar yields and fruit quality compared to grower-standard pre-plant fertilizer treatments. In summary, our results show that it is possible to reduce N content in pre-plant fertilizer by up to 50% compared to current recommendations without causing yield loss in short-day strawberry cultivars. Reducing soil nitrogen leaching losses and improving nitrogen-use efficiency with effective fertilization management strategies are extremely important for sustainable agricultural development. A 2-year field study was executed with the same nitrogen input in a subtropical rice production system in Southeast China, using chemical fertilizers as a control (CK), to study the influences of different application amounts of Chinese milk vetch (CMV), i.e., 15,000 kg hm−2 (CL), 30,000 kg hm−2 (CM), and 45,000 kg hm−2 (CH), on soil soluble nitrogen stock and leaching risks in a clay paddy field. The results showed that the soil stocks of soluble inorganic nitrogen (SIN) and soluble organic nitrogen (SON) in a 0–60 cm soil profile under different application amounts of CMV significantly increased by 12.43–36.03% and 19.43–71.75% compared with CK, respectively, which was more favorable to soil SON accumulation. In the 2-year experiment, the total dissolved nitrogen leaching loss was 23.51–61.88 kg hm−2 under different application rates of CMV, of which 50.08–62.69% was leached by dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and 37.31–49.92% was leached by dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). CMV application improved soil properties (pH, SOM, and urease/protease), increased SIN and SON stocks, and decreased surface water DIN and DON concentrations, thereby reducing DIN and DON leaching. The leachings of DIN and DON in different application rates of CMV were reduced by 11.37–66.23% and 13.39–52.07% compared with the CK treatment, respectively. Conclusively, nitrogen leaching loss in paddy fields was severe, and the DIN and DON leaching loss in CMV treatments were lower than those in the control under the same nitrogen input. Due to containing an abundance of essential nutrients, straw has significant potential to mitigate carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) deficits in soil. However, a lack of comprehensive and systematic reviews on C, N, P, and K release and conversion from straw and on the impact of available nutrients in soils supplemented using straw-returning (SR) practices is noticeable in the literature. Therefore, we investigated straw decomposition, its nutrient release characteristics, and the subsequent fate of nutrients in soils. At early stages, straw decomposes rapidly and then gradually slows down at later stages. Nutrient release rates are generally in the K > P > C > N order. Nutrient fate encompasses fractions mineralized to inorganic nutrients, portions which supplement soil organic matter (SOM) pools, and other portions which are lost via leaching and gas volatilization. In future research, efforts should be made to quantitatively track straw nutrient release and fate and also examine the potential impact of coordinated supply-and-demand interactions between straw nutrients and plants. The rice production system in China is facing challenges, including declining soil fertility and a stagnant rice yield. This study aimed to test whether integrating the return of straw to fields with less power puddling could simultaneously enhance soil fertility and rice yields. Therefore, field experiments were conducted in Heilongjiang Province, a key rice-growing region in China, from 2017 to 2021, using three different planting methods: control group (CK), straw return (SR) and straw return integrated with less power puddling (SR + LP). The results showed that small soil aggregates (particle diameter < 0.25 mm) and soil bulk density were significantly decreased when straw return was integrated with less power puddling. These changes contributed to the preservation of soil structure. Simultaneously, this approach significantly increased soil ammonium nitrogen content from 9.9 to 10.9 mg kg−1, organic matter content from 35.0 to 36.2 g kg−1, available nitrogen content from 140.5 to 147.0 mg kg−1 and available potassium content from 128.6 to 136.8 mg kg−1 at mature stage on average. Consequently, the post-heading stored assimilates accumulation of rice was increased from 6.12 to 6.43 t ha−1, and the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium accumulation of rice were increased by 7.85 kg ha−1, 1.13 kg ha−1 and 5.68 kg ha−1, respectively. These changes ultimately resulted in a higher 1000 g weight and filled grain rate, providing the foundation for higher yields (an increase from 9.31 t ha−1 to 9.55 t ha−1). Furthermore, this approach also increased the net income for farmers by USD 14 t ha−1. In summary, this study demonstrates that integrating straw return with less power puddling can enhance soil's nutrient supply and retention capacity. This enhancement may boost the absorption and transportation of nutrients, ultimately establishing the groundwork for higher yields and economic benefits by enhancing the 1000 g weight and filled grain rate. Ecological restoration can improve soil fertility and have a significant impact on the soil nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient element for plant growth and development, and also an important factor limiting soil productivity. As an important part of soil nitrogen, the composition and proportion of soil organic nitrogen components can directly or indirectly affect the difficulty of soil organic nitrogen mineralization and nitrogen availability, and then affect soil fertility. However, the current studies on soil nitrogen under ecological restoration mainly focus on nitrogen accumulation and nitrogen mineralization, while there are relatively few studies on changes in soil organic nitrogen components, especially in alpine regions. Therefore, in this study, three restoration pattern of mixed forage (MG), single shrub (SA) and shrub combination (SG) that have been restored continuously for 15 years in northwest Sichuan, China, were taken as the research object, and natural sandy land (CK) without manual intervention was taken as the control. Through field sampling and laboratory analysis, the characteristics of the soil nitrogen content and its proportion to soil total nitrogen (TN) under ecological restoration in alpine sandy land in northwest Sichuan, China, were investigated, and the correlation between the nitrogen content and soil physicochemical properties was analyzed. The results showed that the three ecological restoration patterns significantly increased the contents of acylated ammonium nitrogen (AMMN), acid-lyzed amino sugar nitrogen (ASN), acid-lyzed amino acid nitrogen (AAN), acid-lyzed unknown nitrogen (HUN), acid-lyzed total nitrogen (AHN) and non-acid-lyzed nitrogen (NHN) in soil, and the change trend was consistent with that of soil TN. Ecological restoration improved soil nitrogen mineralization and storage capacity by increasing the proportion of AAN, HUN and NHN to soil TN, and the effect was most obvious in the MG pattern 20–40 cm and SG pattern 40–60 cm soil layers. In general, except ASN, the soil nitrogen content was positively correlated with the soil TN, soil water content (SWC) and soil organic carbon (SOC), and negatively correlated with the soil bulk density (BD) and pH. The results of this study will help us to understand the supply capacity of soil nitrogen under ecological restoration and provide a scientific basis for the selection of an ecological restoration mode and the improvement of the restoration effect and efficiency in alpine sandy land. Background and Aims The successful plant Fallopia  ×  bohemica presents interesting capacities for control of the soil nitrogen cycle at the adult stage, termed biological inhibition of denitrification (BDI). The BDI strategy allows the plant, via the production of secondary metabolites (procyanidins), to compete with the denitrifying microbial community and to divert nitrate from the soil for its benefit. In this study, we analysed whether seedlings of F.  ×  bohemica can implement BDI at the seedling stage. We also determined whether soil nitrogen availability influences the implementation of BDI and seedling growth. Methods We sowed achenes of F.  ×  bohemica in soils representing a nitrogen gradient (six treatments) and harvested seedlings after 20 or 40 days of growth. The denitrification and related microbial communities (i.e. functional gene abundances of nirK and nirS), soil parameters (nitrate content and humidity) and plant performance (biomass, growth and root morphology) were determined. Key Results On soil without addition of nitrogen, BDI was observed after 20 days of growth, whereas a stimulation of denitrification was found after 40 days. The increase of soil N content had few effects on the activity and structure of the soil denitrifying community and on the plant biomasses or the relative growth rates. Correlations between plant and microbial parameters were observed after 20 days of growth, reflecting early and strong chemical interactions between plants and the denitrifying community, which decreased with plant growth after 40 days. Conclusions This study shows that an early BDI enhances the efficiency of nitrogen acquisition in the first weeks of growth, allowing for a conservative root strategy after 40 days. This switch to a conservative strategy involved resource storage, an altered allocation to above- and below-ground parts and an investment in fine roots. It now seems clear that this storage strategy starts at a very young age with early establishment of BDI, giving this clonal plant exceptional capacities for storage and multiplication. Describing the coupling of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and carbon (C) cycles of land ecosystems requires understanding microbial element use efficiencies of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. These efficiencies are studied by the Soil Enzyme Steady Allocation Model (SESAM) at the decadal scale. The model assumes that the soil microbial communities and their element use efficiencies develop towards an optimum where the growth of the entire community is maximized. Specifically, SESAM approximated this growth optimization by allocating resources to several SOM-degrading enzymes proportional to the revenue of these enzymes, called the Relative approach. However, a rigorous mathematical treatment of this approximation has been lacking so far. Therefore, in this study we derive explicit formulas of enzyme allocation that maximize the total return from enzymatic processing, called the Optimal approach. Further, we derive another heuristic approach that prescribes the change of allocation without the need of deriving a formulation for the optimal allocation, called the Derivative approach. When comparing predictions across these approaches, we found that the Relative approach was a special case of the Optimal approach valid at sufficiently high microbial biomass. However, at low microbial biomass, it overestimated allocation to the enzymes having lower revenues compared to the Optimal approach. The Derivative-based allocation closely tracked the Optimal allocation. These findings increase our confidence in conclusions drawn from SESAM studies. Moreover, the new developments extend the range of conditions at which valid conclusions can be drawn. Further, based on these findings we formulated the constrained enzyme hypothesis. This hypothesis provides a complementary explanation why some substrates in soil are preserved over decades, although they are often decomposed within a few years in incubation experiments. This study shows how optimality considerations lead to simplified models, new insights, and new hypotheses. This is another step in deriving a simple representation of an adaptive microbial community, which is required for coupled stoichiometric C–N–P dynamic models that are aimed to study decadal processes beyond the ecosystem scale. The involving of organic compounds in accumulation of Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, and Pb by Fe–Mn nodules in agro-dark-humus podbels (Planosols (Aric)) under different types of long-term agrotechnical impact has been studied in the south of Primorskii region. The profile patterns of the level of SOC content in soils and in nodules indicate the active deposition of organic compounds in nodules in the lower parts of soil profiles in the of fallow and phytomeliorative variants of the experiment. Fulvic acids were noted to predominate in the composition of humus in the nodules in these variants. The long-term application of organic fertilizers contributed to the decrease of SOC incorporation into nodules and to the increase of the part of humic acids in nodules. Nodules were characterized by a high accumulation levels of Co and Pb in all variants of the experiment. Accumulation of Ni, Cr, and Cu was recorded in nodules from particular horizons of studied soils. The intensity of elements accumulation in nodules of different variants of the experiment varied. Accumulation of Ni was controlled by the content of Mn-containing compounds. Based on the analysis of relationships between the contents of SOC, compounds of Fe and Mn, and trace elements, the relative influence of Fe–containing and organic compounds in accumulation of all studied elements by nodules has been identified. Background: The application of synthetic chemical inputs in current agricultural practices has significantly increased crop production, but their use has caused severe negative consequences on the environment. Humalite is an organic soil amendment that is rich in humic acid and found in large deposits in southern Alberta, Canada. Humic products can enhance nutrient uptake and assimilation in plants by reducing nutrient losses and enhancing bioavailability in the soil. Aim: Here, we evaluated the effects of different humalite rates in the presence of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK) at recommended rates on soil nitrogen availability, wheat growth, grain yield, seed nutritional quality, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under controlled environmental conditions. Methods: A series of studies were conducted by applying five different rates of humalite (0, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 kg ha−1) with NPK at recommended rates. Soil nitrogen availability and shoot and root growth parameters were recorded at flowering stage. NUE was calculated based on the grain yield at maturity stage. Results: Plants grown in the presence of humalite augmented root morphological parameters (root length, volume, and surface area), plant biomass (shoot and root), and nutrient uptake (N, P, K, and S) compared to the plants supplied with recommended fertilizer alone. Furthermore, humalite application significantly increased grain yield (14%–19%), seed protein content (23%–30%), and NUE (14%–60%) compared to the fertilizer application alone. Conclusion: These findings suggest that humalite can be used as an organic soil amendment to reduce synthetic fertilizer application and improve plant growth and yield while enhancing fertilizer use efficiency. Aims: Nitrogen (N) deposition alters plant stoichiometry and the state of nutrient limitation in forest ecosystems. In subtropical forests of China, responses of plants stoichiometry to chronically elevated and recently declined N deposition remain unclear. Methods: A 14-year investigation of needle elements, including N, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and aluminum (Al), was carried out under field N manipulation (10-year N addition and subsequent cessation of N addition) in a typical, subtropical Masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) forest in southwest China. Results: Needle N and P concentrations were significantly elevated by N addition even after N addition ceased while needle N:P remained constant among treatments. Needle N:K and P:K were significantly elevated by N addition, but were no longer different from reference plots after N addition ceased. Masson pine's annual relative growth rate (RGR) was significantly decreased by N addition but the differences among treatments became insignificant among treatments after N addition ceased. Additionally, the annual RGR was negatively correlated with needle Al concentration. Needle Al exhibited a trend of first rising and then decreasing over the 14-year experiment. Conclusions: Under the background of high ambient N deposition and Ca deposition, chronic N addition does not aggravate P limitation but can result in K limitation in a N-saturated subtropical forest. With the recovery of subtropical forest from soil acidification and N saturation, the elevated needle N and P induced by N addition will persist for at least four years and most likely for much longer in the future, but the risk of K limitation is expected to diminish. Aims: This study investigated a 7 yr old rehabilitated grassland established on a bauxite residue storage areas(RSA) in order to assess the availability and ecosystem transfer of both nutrient and trace elements, and to determine if defined rehabilitation criteria were sustained. Methods: Rehabilitated residue/soil was sampled over depth (0–10 and 10-20 cm) and season (Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter) and plant growth stage (green vs. senescent) to determine both essential and non-essential element (Ca, Mg, Na, Al and V) content. Invertebrates samples from both decomposer and predator specimens were assessed to determine if foodchain transfer occurred. Results: Residue-soil results showed sustained rehabilitation with pH, EC and ESP all within recommended criteria levels. Further, bioavailable fractions of Al and V remained low. Vegetation analysis revealed seasonal variation for both essential and non-essential elements and highlights the need for wider monitoring parameters. Elemental content in invertebrate samples did not indicate foodchain transfer and results were comparable to a reference site. Conclusion: Results show sustained rehabilitation with low bioavailability of non-essential elements and foodchain transfer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present investigation reports the development and characterization of a clay-polymer composite loaded with urea and Trichoderma harzianum (UTCPC) to enhance soil moisture and nitrogen availability and manage wilt-nematode complex in lentil grown in residual moisture after rainfed rice. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization proved successful synthesis of UTCPC. The bentonite clay (8% w w−1) and Th concentration (10% w w−1) were optimized based on the maximum spore count of the UTCPC and viability of the Th spores at one month of storage at room temperature. The incubation and pot culture experiments were laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with six N levels replicated thrice in combinations with UTCPC. Under incubation experiment, the treatment of 100% N through farmyard manure (FYM) along with UTCPC application (T3) resulted in the highest soil moisture (18.5%) and lowest nitrate (NO3-N) content (42%) at 6 and 10 days after incubation, respectively, suggesting its sustained moisture-retaining and slow nitrate (NO3-N) release properties of the UTCPC. Under pot experiment, the treatment T3 expressed the highest soil moisture (28.8%) and NO3-N (17.6 kg ha−1) content even at 60 days after sowing. The disease severity index of all the treatments comprising UTCPC with or without nutrient application was significantly lower than the untreated soil. The lowest population of Fusarium spp. (13.8%) and Meloidogyne spp. (8%) were observed in T3. Therefore, UTCPC can be considered as an eco-friendly agri-input in enhancing moisture retention and sustaining nutrient release to the soil as well as providing biocontrol agents to manage Fusarium-Meloidogyne complex in lentil. Annealing at high temperatures holds the possibility of concentrating defects in the graphene. Moreover, a significant increase in annealing temperature destroys the surface properties. In this work, the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was prepared by an electrochemical technique with a high voltage (V = ∼ 2 4 V, I = ∼ 3. 2 5 A). Then, the potential effects of impact on thermal treatment in a temperature range of 800–1000∘C in nitrogen-rich environment on the microstructure and surface morphology, thermal stability, phase and crystallinity, structural disorder, absorption properties, and optical properties of RGO for optoelectronic applications were investigated. In addition, a link was established between the estimated crystallite sizes determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman data. The microstructural data indicate that the annealing temperature has a significant effect on the microstructure and carbon–oxygen (C/O) ratio. The C/O ratio increases as a function of annealing temperature. Atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis revealed that the root mean square (RMS) roughness of annealed RGO increases with increasing annealing temperature indicating an increase in crystallite size during annealing. Since most organic compounds were removed from the surface of the annealed RGO, oxygen functionalities appear to have minimal effect on the thermal stability of RGO. The size of graphene crystallites increases with annealing temperature, as shown by XRD observations. The crystalline structure was restored by annealing. The Raman results show that in the "low" defect density zone, the I D ∕ I G values increase because a larger defect density causes a stronger elastic scattering. UV–Vis spectroscopy shows that the absorption of RGO is not affected by annealing temperatures between 800∘C and 900∘C. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has recently emerged as a valuable tool for monitoring organic waste utilized in anaerobic digestion processes. Over the past decade, NIRS has significantly improved the characterization of organic waste by enabling the prediction of several crucial parameters such as biochemical methane potential, carbohydrate, lipid and nitrogen contents, Chemical Oxygen Demand, and kinetic parameters. This study investigates the application of NIRS for predicting the levels of Sulfur (S) and Phosphorus (P) within organic waste materials. The results for sulfur prediction exhibited a high level of accuracy, yielding an error of 1.21 g/Kg[TS] in an independently validated dataset, coupled with an R-squared value of 0.84. Conversely, the prediction of phosphorus proved to be slightly less successful, showing an error of 1.49 g/Kg[TS] with an R-squared value of 0.70. Furthermore, the disparities in performance seem to stem from the inherent correlation between the spectral data and the sulfur or phosphorus contents. Significantly, a variable selection technique known as CovSel was employed, shedding light on the differing approaches used for sulfur and phosphorus predictions. In the case of sulfur, the prediction was achieved through a direct correlation with wavelengths associated with sulfur-related functional groups (such as R − S(=O) 2 − OH, -SH, and R-S-S-R) present in the NIR spectra. In contrast, phosphorus prediction relied on an indirect correlation with absorption bands related to organic matter (including CH, CH 2 , CH 3 , –CHO, R-OH, C = O, –CO 2 H, and CONH). Background: The fertile islands formed by shrubs are major drivers of the structure and function of desert ecosystems, affecting seedling establishment, plant–plant interactions, the diversity and productivity of plant communities, and microbial activity/diversity. Although an increasing number of studies have shown the critical importance of soil microbes in fertile island formation, how soil microbial community structure and function are affected by the different fertile island effect intensities is still unknown. As an endangered and dominant shrub species in the West Ordos Desert, Tetraena mongolica was selected for further exploration of its fertile island effect on the soil microbial community in the present study to test the following two hypotheses: (1) T. mongolica shrubs with different canopy sizes exert fertile island effects of different strengths; (2) the soil microbial community structure and function beneath the T. mongolica canopy are affected by the fertile island, and the strength of these effects varies depending on the shrub canopy size. Results: The contents of soil total nitrogen (TN) and available phosphorus (AVP) were significantly greater beneath T. mongolica shrub canopy than outside the shrub canopy. With increasing shrub canopy size, the enrichment of soil TN and AVP increased, indicating a stronger fertile island effect. The structure and function of soil microbial communities, including fungal, archaeal and bacterial communities, are affected by the fertile island effect. An increase in canopy size increased the relative abundance of Ascomycota (Fungi) and Thaumarchaeota (Archaea). For the soil microbial functional groups, the relative abundance of endophytes in the fungal functional groups; steroid hormone biosynthesis, sphingolipid metabolism, and steroid biosynthesis genes in the bacterial functional groups; and nonhomologous end-joining and bisphenol degradation functional genes in the archaeal functional groups increased significantly with increasing T. mongolica canopy size. Conclusions: These results revealed that T. mongolica had a fertile island effect, which affected the soil microbial community structure and functions, and that the fertile island effect might increase with increasing shrub canopy size. Flooding and climate warming lead to the increase of low‐molecular‐weight organic acid (LMWOA) inputs to soil. However, it is unclear what the effects of flooding and climate warming on soil nitrogen fraction transformation under LMWOA input are. Fluvisol was collected in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir to conduct an incubation experiment with the treatments of three LMWOAs at five contents, two hydrological environments and two temperatures. Compared with LMWOA input of 0 mg kg−1, the soil nitrogen in ion exchangeable fraction (IEF‐N), strong oxidant extractable fraction (SOEF‐N) and non‐transformable nitrogen (NTF‐N) were increased by 35.77, 54.71 and 25.49 mg kg−1, respectively, under LMWOA input of 40 mmol kg−1. Soil nitrogen in the weak acid extractable fraction (WAEF‐N) was decreased by 117.41 mg kg−1. Microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) was increased by 25.29 mg kg−1, and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was decreased by 8.03 g kg−1. The contents of IEF‐N, NTF‐N and amorphous iron oxides were higher under the flooding environment than under the drying environment. In contrast, opposite results were observed for soil nitrogen in the strong alkali extractable fraction (SAEF‐N), SOEF‐N and MBN. IEF‐N and NTF‐N contents were higher at 20°C than at 30°C, and the contents of SOEF‐N and MBN were higher at 30°C than at 20°C. WAEF‐N was dissolved by LMWOA through CaCO3 dissolution. The dissolved WAEF‐N was partly transformed into SOEF‐N and NTF‐N by microbial assimilation and humification. Flooding desorbed SAEF‐N through the crystalline transformation of iron oxides. Flooding inhibited the transformation of IEF‐N to SOEF‐N and promoted the formation of NTF‐N, while warming did the opposite. The results provide a perspective of the bound state between soil and nitrogen for understanding the soil nitrogen cycling and help to assess the impacts of climate warming and flooding on soil nitrogen loss from soil to the surrounding water. Typical successions in land use affect the dynamics of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in the soil. This study aimed to determine the effects of land use change on soil organic carbon and N content and stocks in pastures, crops, and forests in the Amazon. Soil C and N stocks were assessed at depths of 30 and 100 cm to determine 13C isotopic abundance. The concentrations of C and N in crops were lower (p < 0.05) than those in other land use types. Soil organic C and soil N stocks for pasture (67.6, 144.8, 5.7, and 13.3) and forest (77.1, 137.5, 6.3, and 13.8) systems were similar, but greater than those of the crop area (36.4, 63.9, 3.0, and 6.0), regardless of depth (30 and 100 cm for C and N). Land use change for pastures in the Arc of Deforestation region of the Amazon maintains SOC and N stocks in the soil and is more sustainable than the agricultural system with black pepper, as long as the conditions of soil, climate, and cultivation are similar. Invasive plants often alter ecosystem function and processes, especially soil N cycling. In eastern United States forests, the shrub Rosa multiflora ("rose") is a dominant invader, yet potential effects on N cycling are poorly understood. Moreover, invasive plant management can impact soil N cycling by decreasing plant N uptake and disturbing the soil. The objectives of this study were to evaluate N cycling along a gradient of rose invasion (observational) and investigate potential changes to N cycling (manipulative) under four different management strategies: (1) do nothing (the control), (2) invasive plant removal, (3) removal followed by native seed mix addition, (4) removal, native seed mix, and chipped rose stem addition. We selected three forest sites experiencing a Low, Medium, or High amount of shrub invasion, and measured N cycling in the early (June) and late (September) growing seasons. We found N was immobilized in June and mineralized in September. One year after experimental management, removal alone had no effect on N cycling compared to control plots, but addition of native seed mix and chipped stems reduced early-season nitrification in our Medium invasion site. Our findings suggest that rose invasion may increase N cycling rates when soils are dry, which may occur more frequently with future climate change. The intercropping of peanuts and sugarcane is a sustainable planting model that deserves in-depth research. For this study, two variables, i.e., intercropping status (peanut monocropping or sugarcane/peanut intercropping) and the level of nitrogen fertilization (low, medium, or high), were evaluated to analyze the effects of intercropping and nitrogen application on soil fertility and microbial communities in peanut rhizosphere soil. These analyses revealed that higher nitrogen application led to increased total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen (AN), and soil organic matter (OM) levels in rhizosphere soil for both monocropped and intercropped peanuts, with a decrease in pH. Monocropped peanuts had higher TN, total phosphorus (TP), and total potassium (TK) levels compared to intercropped peanuts at the same nitrogen level but lower AN content and pH levels. The diversity of microbial communities in the rhizosphere soil of intercropped peanuts was significantly higher than that of monocropped peanuts under high levels of nitrogen fertilizer application. Higher levels of Gemmatimonadetes abundance were observed in intercropping rhizosphere soil, compared to that associated with peanut monocropping under low, middle, and high levels of nitrogen fertilizer application, whereas the opposite trend was observed for Chloroflexi abundance. Nitrospira abundance levels rose gradually in the monocropping treatment group, whereas the opposite trend was evident under intercropping conditions. Further analyses of nitrogen cycle-related genes demonstrated higher levels of nitrogen conversion cycle activity in intercropping peanut rhizosphere soil under low nitrogen levels, whereas nitrogen transformation cycle activity levels were higher in monocropping peanut rhizosphere soil under high levels of nitrogen amendment. It can be concluded that intercropping and nitrogen fertilizer application change the physical and chemical properties of soil, thus affecting the diversity and function of soil microbial communities in the peanut rhizosphere. Winter cover crops have been shown to promote the accumulation of microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, enhance nutrient cycling, reduce erosion, improve ecosystem stability, etc. In the black soil area of Northeast China, Triticum aestivum L., Medicago sativa L., Vicia villosa Roth., Triticum aestivum L. and Medicago sativa L. mixed planting, Triticum aestivum L. and Vicia villosa Roth. mixed planting, and winter fallow fields (CK) were selected to investigate the effects of winter cover crops on soil total carbon and nitrogen and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. The results showed that (1) after seasonal freeze-thaw, the rate of change in SOC (−2.49~6.50%), TN (−1.54~5.44%), and C/N (−1.18~1.16%) was less than that in SMBC (−80.91~−58.33%), SMBN (−65.03~332.22%), and SMBC/SMBN (−45.52~−90.03%); (2) winter cover crops not only alleviated the negative effects of seasonal freeze-thaw, which reduces SMBC and qMBC, but also increased SMBN and qMBN; (3) there was an extremely significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation between SOC and TN, a significant (p < 0.05) negative correlation between SMBC and SMBN, and there was no significant correlation between SOC and SMBC or between TN and SMBN; (4) alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen had the greatest impact on SOC and TN, while the soil's saturation degree had the greatest impact on SMBC and SMBN; and (5) the Triticum aestivum L. monoculture was the most effective in conserving soil microbial carbon and nitrogen. In conclusion, winter cover crops can mitigate the reduction in soil microbial biomass carbon caused by seasonal freeze-thaw and also increase the soil microbial nitrogen content in the black soil region of Northeast China, of which Triticum aestivum L. monoculture showed the best performance. The cultivation of drip-irrigated rice has resulted in lower yields. However, the decrease in rice yield under drip irrigation and its relationship with the existing water and N regime have not been fully explained. Research and development of optimized water and N-management techniques are crucial for increasing rice yield under drip irrigation. In this study, two irrigation treatments were set: conventional drip irrigation (DIO) and drip irrigation with water stress (DIS). Each irrigation treatment contained four N rates: urea N 240 kg ha−1 (LN), urea N 300 kg ha−1 (MN), urea N 360 kg ha−1 (HN), and ammonium sulfate N 300 kg ha−1 (AN). The soil's ammonium and nitrate contents were measured on the 2nd and 28th days after N application at panicle initiation stage. At anthesis, the aboveground and root biomass of rice were measured. In heading and maturity stage the N content of aboveground was measured and the yield, yield components, and NPFP were assessed at maturity stage. The results showed the following: (1) On the second day after N application, the contents of soil NO3−-N and NH4+-N in the 0–10 cm soil layer were highest for both the DIO and DIS. On the 28th day after N application, the soil NO3−-N content was highest at the 20–40 cm depth, while the soil NH4+-N content was still highest at the 0–10 cm depth. (2) The aboveground and root biomass in DIO treatment were significantly higher than in DIS. Furthermore, the root biomass at the 0–10 cm depth was significantly greater than at the 10–50 cm depth for both the DIO and DIS treatments. In the DIO treatment, the root biomass at the 10–50 cm depth was significantly higher with the HN and AN treatments compared to MN. However, in the DIS treatment, the root biomass at the 10–50 cm depth did not show significant differences between the MN, HN, and AN. (3) N accumulation in rice was significantly higher for the DIO treatment compared to the DIS treatment. Under the same irrigation treatment, the N accumulation in rice was highest in the AN and lowest in the LN. The PrNTA and PrNTC in DIS were significantly higher than in DIO, while the PoNAA and PoNAC were significantly lower in DIS. (4) The number of panicles, spikelets per panicle, seed-setting rate, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield were significantly lower in DIS. Under the DIS, these parameters were not significantly different among the MN, HN, and AN. In the DIO, the seed-setting rate, 1000-grain weight, and yield were not significantly different between the HN and AN, but were significantly higher than in the MN and LN. (5) NPFP was significantly higher in the DIO compared to the DIS. Among the different N rates, NPFP was highest with the AN treatment and lowest with the LN. In summary, under drip irrigation, there was a mismatch between soil mineral N and the distribution of rice roots, leading to reduced N accumulation and utilization in rice, ultimately impacting yield formation. Increasing N application and soil ammonium nutrition can improve rice yield under drip irrigation. Denitrification is a key process in soil available nitrogen (N) loss. However, the effects of different water-saving irrigation systems on soil N components and denitrifying bacterial communities are still unclear. In this study, quantitative fluorescence PCR and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were used to investigate the effects of three main irrigation systems, conventional flooding irrigation (FP), shallow buried drip irrigation (DI), and mulched drip irrigation (MF), on the abundance, community composition, and diversity of soil nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria in the semi-arid area of Northeast China, and to clarify the driving factors of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacterial community variations. The results showed that, compared with FP, MF significantly increased soil moisture, alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen (AHN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), non-acid hydrolyzed nitrogen (AIN), and amino sugar nitrogen (ASN), but significantly decreased the contents of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and acid hydrolyzed ammonium nitrogen (AN). The irrigation system changed the relative abundance of the dominant genera of denitrifying bacteria, DI and MF significantly increased nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrite reductase (NiR) activities, and MF significantly increased the diversity of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria but significantly decreased the richness. The community structure of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria was significantly different among the three irrigation systems. NO3−-N was the main driving factor affecting the community structure of nirS-type denitrifying bacteria, and moisture significantly affected the community structure of nirK-type denitrifying bacteria. DI and MF significantly increased the abundance of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria and also increased the abundance ratio of nirS/nirK genes. Therefore, although DI and MF significantly increased the abundance of denitrifying microorganisms, they did not lead to an increase in the N2O emission potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The complexity of NP and NPK fertilizers in stationary and long-term system yields is proven to determine substantial changes in soil fertility, revealing interaction possibilities related to the chemistry and requirements of other nutrients (S, Ca, Mg, and microelements), while sustainable fertilization can exert control over them through rational fertilization practices and complex nutritive management. Revealing the extent of the modifying effects in the application of S, Ca, and Mg correlated to the soil-plant system conditions relates to the hypothesis of the present research in the context of long-term experiments in Romania at the Office of Pedological and Agrochemical Studies Alba (OSPA Alba) and the Turda Agricultural Research and Development Station (SCDA Turda) with 55 years of a fertilizing effect over the 1967–2022 period, but not solely. This study shows that for sustainable fertilization systems, the complementary application of S, Ca, and Mg with NP and NPK has proven to be effective and unitarily constitutes a measure for the sustainable protection and enhancement of soil fertility. Biochar and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are widely used as an amendment for soil physicochemical properties and soil bacterial community diversity. In Guangxi, China, we carried out a study to determine how PGPR and biochar influence the soil's environmental stability in an Eucalypt plantation. We applied biochar and PGPR in a contrasting application manner to an acidic red loam soil. Thus, three treatments were set up as 5 × 1010 CFU·mL−1 PGPR-only (MB0), 20 t·hm−2 biochar-only (B20), and co-application of 20 t·hm−2 biochar and 5 × 1010 CFU·mL−1 PGPR (MB20), as well as no biochar and no PGPR (M0B0). Our results indicated that MB20 significantly decreased the soil total nitrogen (TN) and increased the soil total phosphorus (Soil TP), soil ammonium nitrogen (NH4+), and soil water content (SWC) when compared with the control. The MB20 also significantly increased the Simpson, ACE, and Chao indices of the soil bacterial community's diversity relative to the control. We also observed a significant effect of the Soil TN on both the bacterial community and the functional diversity in soil. Although nitrogen (N) enrichment is known to threaten the temporal stability of aboveground net primary productivity, it remains unclear how it alters that of belowground microbial abundance and whether its impact can be regulated by grassland degradation. Using data from N enrichment experiments at temperate grasslands with no, moderate, severe, and extreme degradation degrees, we quantified the temporal stability of soil microbial abundance (hereafter 'microbial community stability') using the ratio of the mean quantitative PCR to its standard deviation over 4 years. Both bacterial and fungal community stability sharply decreased when N input exceeded 30 g N m−2 year−1 in non‐degraded grasslands, whereas a reduction in this threshold occurred in degraded grasslands. Microbial species diversity, species asynchrony, and species associations jointly altered microbial community stability. Interestingly, the linkages between plant and microbial community stability were strengthened in degraded grasslands, suggesting that plants and soil microbes might depend on each other to keep stable communities in harsh environments. Our findings highlighted the importance of grassland degradation in regulating the responses of microbial community stability to N enrichment and provided experimental evidence for understanding the relationships between plant and microbial community stability. Inclusion of edaphic conditions in biogeographical studies typically provides a better fit and deeper understanding of plant distributions. Increased reliance on soil data calls for easily accessible data layers providing continuous soil predictions worldwide. Although SoilGrids provides a potentially useful source of predicted soil data for biogeographic applications, its accuracy for estimating the soil characteristics experienced by individuals in small‐scale populations is unclear. We used a biogeographic sampling approach to obtain soil samples from 212 sites across the midwestern and eastern United States, sampling only at sites where there was a population of one of the 22 species in Lobelia sect. Lobelia. We analyzed six physical and chemical characteristics in our samples and compared them with predicted values from SoilGrids. Across all sites and species, soil texture variables (clay, silt, sand) were better predicted by SoilGrids (R2:.25–.46) than were soil chemistry variables (carbon and nitrogen, R2 ≤.01; pH, R2:.19). While SoilGrids predictions rarely matched actual field values for any variable, we were able to recover qualitative patterns relating species means and population‐level plant characteristics to soil texture and pH. Rank order of species mean values from SoilGrids and direct measures were much more consistent for soil texture (Spearman rS =.74–.84; all p <.0001) and pH (rS =.61, p =.002) than for carbon and nitrogen (p >.35). Within the species L. siphilitica, a significant association, known from field measurements, between soil texture and population sex ratios could be detected using SoilGrids data, but only with large numbers of sites. Our results suggest that modeled soil texture values can be used with caution in biogeographic applications, such as species distribution modeling, but that soil carbon and nitrogen contents are currently unreliable, at least in the region studied here. Background and aims: Cover crops can increase nitrogen (N) retention in agroecosystems by taking up soil soluble N when the grain crop is absent. We examined how the combination of cover crops and variability in winter conditions can affect soil N retention and N transfer to the subsequent crop. Methods: We used 15N tracer to quantify how the presence of cover crops (both winter-hardy and winter-killed) modifies the recovery by a corn crop of soil soluble N added the previous fall, and we used snow removal to assess how increased freezing would alter 15N recovery. We predicted snow removal would decrease 15N recovery in corn, and this decrease would be highest for plots with winter-hardy cover crops, given they remain vulnerable to increased frost over winter. Results: Cover crops approximately doubled corn grain 15N recovery (up to 8% of the added 15N) relative to the treatment that lacked cover crops (4% of the added 15N). Snow removal reduced 15N recovery in corn grain, but this effect did not differ among cover crop treatments. 15N recovery in soil at the time of corn harvest was increased by cover crops, with retention as high as 40% of the added 15N tracer, compared to only 20% for soil in the control plots. Soil 15N recovery was not significantly reduced by snow removal. Conclusion: Although increased soil freezing reduced grain N recovery, cover crops increased soil N retention, which indicates decreased N losses to the surrounding environment, and the potential for increased contributions to grain N in future years. Background and Aims Pinus massoniana: Lamb. is an important conifer forestry species in south China, but soil fertility has declined over time in monoculture plantations. Knowledge about how P. massoniana uses phosphorus (P) by distributing it among five biochemical fractions and how intercropping with broadleaf Castanopsis hystrix alters that pattern may inform long-term plantation management. Methods: We studied a single P. massoniana plantation that was split in half into a monoculture and a P. massoniana / C. hystrix intercropped plantation 25 years after establishment. We measured photosynthesis and leaf concentrations of total P, P allocated to five chemical fractions and total nitrogen (N). We also measured soil N concentrations. Results: Intercropping C. hystrix with 25-year-old P. massoniana for a further 34 years had no significant impact on P. massoniana total stem volume, although intercropped P. massoniana trees were 5 m taller. Intercropping with C. hystrix increased timber biomass due to the additional C. hystrix stems. Growth of C. hystrix was likely more limited by P than that of P. massoniana in both plantations. Total P concentration and its allocation among fractions declined with increasing leaf age, but differed in the two species. Leaf P-resorption efficiency in intercropped P. massoniana was 79%, which was about 15% greater than that in P. massoniana monoculture and in the intercropped C. hystrix. The greater P-resorption efficiency in intercropped P. massoniana than in monoculture was due to greater mobilization of P from all fractions, except phospholipids. Bulk soil N concentration was 50% greater in the intercropped plantation than in monoculture. Conclusion: Adding C. hystrix to an P. massoniana plantation was effective at increasing wood yield without compromising productivity of P. massoniana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The space‐for‐time method was used to track changes in heavy metals (HMs), selected physicochemical properties and soil enzyme activities at different restoration ages, that is 5, 10, and 25 years (named R5, R10, and R25, respectively) and in a natural forest (NF, age > 100 years, as the control) in the Daxin manganese (Mn) wastelands in China. The results showed that the HM concentrations decreased over time, with Mn exhibiting the highest concentration, followed by zinc, copper, and cadmium; all the studied sites exhibited heavy pollution levels based on the Nemerow multifactor index, with a very high potential ecological risk (RI) level in R5, moderate RI in R10 and R25, and low RI in NF; generally speaking, the soil physicochemical properties improved, with the exceptions of the available phosphorus (AP) and calcium (Ca) levels; the soil enzymes generally exhibited the highest activities in R25, while the activity of catalase showed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease over time; both the HM concentrations and physicochemical properties showed significant correlations with soil enzyme activities; redundancy analysis showed that soil pH and HM species should be given more attention in R5 for vegetation recovery; and the HM concentrations, soil moisture content, and ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium levels might be the limiting factors for plant colonization in early restoration periods, while the AP, total phosphorus, and Ca levels might be the limiting factors in later restoration periods. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) production for biofuel has the potential to produce reasonable yields on lands not suited for conventional agriculture. We assessed nine switchgrass cultivars representing lowland and upland ecotypes grown for 11 years at a site in the upper Midwest USA for belowground differences in soil carbon and nitrogen stocks, soil organic matter fractions, and standing root biomass to 1 m depth. We also compared potential nitrogen mineralization and carbon substrate use through community‐level physiological profiling in surface soils (0–10 cm depth). Average yields and standing root biomass differed among cultivars and between ecotypes, but we found no significant cultivar‐related impacts on soil carbon and nitrogen stocks, on the distribution of particulate and mineral‐associated soil organic matter fractions, nor on potential nitrogen mineralization or microbial community‐level physiological profiles. That these traits did not differ among cultivars suggests that soil carbon and nitrogen gains under switchgrass are likely to be robust with respect to cultivar differences, and to this point not much affected by breeding efforts. Two-dimensional carbon nitrides (CxNy) have gained significant attention in various fields including hydrogen energy development, environmental remediation, optoelectronic devices, and energy storage owing to their extensive surface area, abundant raw materials, high chemical stability, and distinctive physical and chemical characteristics. One effective approach to address the challenges of limited visible light utilization and elevated carrier recombination rates is to establish heterojunctions for CxNy-based single materials (e.g. C2N3, g-C3N4, C3N4, C4N3, C2N, and C3N). The carrier generation, migration, and recombination of heterojunctions with different band alignments have been analyzed starting from the application of CxNy with metal oxides, transition metal sulfides (selenides), conductive carbon, and Cx′Ny′ heterojunctions. Additionally, we have explored diverse strategies to enhance heterojunction performance from the perspective of carrier dynamics. In conclusion, we present some overarching observations and insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of advanced CxNy-based heterojunctions. Biochar incorporation into soil has shown potential, in enhancing nitrogen fertilizer (N-fertilizer) efficacy and soil organic carbon content (SOC). This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by investigating the effects of biochar addition over a seven-year period (2014–2020) on inorganic N, SOC, and pH in Haplic Luvisol. The research involved a rain-fed field experiment, with a crop rotation comprising spring barley, maize, spring wheat, and pea. Biochar, applied at the rates of 0, 10, and 20 t ha−1 in 2014, was reapplied to specific plots in 2018. Biochar was also combined with N-fertilizer at three level (N0, N1, and N2). Results showed a significant interactive influence of biochar and N-fertilizer combination on NO3− and NH4+ contents. Intriguingly, the addition of 10 t biochar ha−1 consistently decreased soil inorganic N levels across most of the examined months. Increasing biochar application rates led to a significant rise in pH, establishing a clear, negative correlation between soil pH and inorganic N content. Biochar significantly increased SOC compared to the control, particularly after the reapplication in 2018. However, this effect showed a diminishing trend over time. The study suggests that incorporating biochar treatments may enhance N-fertilizer effectiveness. However, the long-term implications of biochar application with N-fertilizer on N mineralization are specific to individual soil and biochar combinations. Except the application of 20 t ha−1 biochar at N2 in 2019, biochar did not affect the crop yields. Studied soil properties, including those influenced by biochar had nuanced impact on different aspects of crop yield. Article Highlights: Biochar obtained from mixed paper fiber sludge and the grain husks resulted in a significant increase of SOC over 7 years. Biochar aging resulted in a decrease in pH one year after its application in 2015 and 2019.
