Dirichlet-Neumann Operators (DNOs) are important to the formulation, analysis, and simulation of many crucial models found in engineering and the sciences. For instance, these operators permit moving-boundary problems, such as the classical water wave problem (free-surface ideal fluid flow under the influence of gravity and capillarity), to be restated in terms of interfacial quantities, which not only eliminates the boundary tracking problem, but also reduces the problem dimension. While these DNOs have been the object of much recent study regarding their numerical simulation and rigorous analysis, they have yet to be examined in the setting of laterally quasiperiodic boundary conditions. The purpose of this contribution is to begin this investigation with a particular eye towards the problem of more realistically simulating two and three dimensional surface water waves. Here we not only carefully define the DNO with respect to these boundary conditions for Laplace's equation, but we also show the rigorous analyticity of these operators with respect to sufficiently smooth boundary perturbations. These theoretical developments suggest a novel algorithm for the stable and high-order simulation of the DNO, which we implement and extensively test., Comment: 43 pages, 7 figures

Over the past twenty years, the field of plasmonics has been revolutionized with the isolation and utilization of two--dimensional materials, particularly graphene. Consequently there is significant interest in rapid, robust, and highly accurate computational schemes which can incorporate such materials. Standard volumetric approaches can be contemplated, but these require huge computational resources. Here we describe an algorithm which addresses this issue for nonlocal models of the electromagnetic response of graphene. Our methodology not only approximates the graphene layer with a surface current, but also reformulates the governing volumetric equations in terms of surface quantities using Dirichlet--Neumann Operators. We have recently shown how these surface equations can be numerically simulated in an efficient, stable, and accurate fashion using a High--Order Perturbation of Envelopes methodology. We extend these results to the nonlocal model mentioned above, and using an implementation of this algorithm, we study absorbance spectra of TM polarized plane--waves scattered by a periodic grid of graphene ribbons., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Electromagnetic waves interacting with three--dimensional periodic structures occur in many applications of great scientific and engineering interest. These three dimensional interactions are extremely complicated and subtle, so it is unsurprising that practitioners find their rapid, robust, and accurate numerical simulation to be of paramount interest. Among the wide array of possible numerical approaches, the High--Order Spectral algorithms are often preferred due to their surpassing fidelity with a moderate number of unknowns, and here we describe an algorithm that fits into this class. In addition, we take a perturbative approach to the problem which views the deviation of the permittivity from a reference value as the deformation and we conduct a regular perturbation theory. This work concludes a line of research on these methods which began with two-dimensional problems governed by the Helmholtz equation and moved to small perturbations in the fully three-dimensional vector Maxwell equations. Photoionization models frequently assume constant temperature or density within HII regions. We investigate this assumption by measuring the detailed temperature and density structures of four HII regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud, using integral-field spectroscopic data from the Wide-Field Spectrograph on the ANU 2.3m telescope. We analyse the distribution of emission-lines of low-ionization species, intermediate-ionization species and high-ionization species. We present the complex electron temperature and density structures within HII regions. All four nebulae present a negative gradient in the electron density profile. Both positive and negative temperature gradients are observed in the nebulae. We create a series of nebula models with a constant ISM pressure and varying temperature and density distributions. Comparison of the line ratios between our HII regions and models suggests that none of the simple nebula models can reproduce the observed temperature and density structures. Comparison between the models and the data suggests that the ISM pressure of nebulae in LMC and SMC is between log(P/k)=6-7.5. The scattering of electromagnetic waves by three--dimensional periodic structures is important for many problems of crucial scientific and engineering interest. Due to the complexity and three-dimensional nature of these waves, the fast, accurate, and reliable numerical simulations of these are indispensable for engineers and scientists alike. For this, High Order Spectral methods are frequently employed and here we describe an algorithm in this class. We use James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (NIRCam WFSS) and Near-Infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release survey (CEERS) to measure rest-frame optical emission-line of 155 galaxies at z>2. The blind NIRCam grism observations include a sample of galaxies with bright emission lines that were not observed on the NIRSpec masks. We study the changes of the Ha, [OIII]/Hb, and [NeIII]/[OII] emission lines in terms of redshift by comparing to lower redshift SDSS and CLEAR samples. We find a significant (>3$\sigma$) correlation between [OIII]/Hb with redshift, while [NeIII]/[OII] has a marginal (2$\sigma$) correlation with redshift. We compare [OIII]/Hb and [NeIII]/[OII] to stellar mass and Hb SFR. We find that both emission-line ratios have a correlation with Hb SFR and an anti-correlation with stellar mass across the redshifts 0

MACS0647$-$JD is a triply-lensed $z\sim11$ galaxy originally discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we report new JWST imaging, which clearly resolves MACS0647$-$JD as having two components that are either merging galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. Both are very small, with stellar masses $\sim10^8\,M_\odot$ and radii $r<100\,\rm pc$. The brighter larger component "A" is intrinsically very blue ($\beta\sim-2.6$), likely due to very recent star formation and no dust, and is spatially extended with an effective radius $\sim70\,\rm pc$. The smaller component "B" appears redder ($\beta\sim-2$), likely because it is older ($100-200\,\rm Myr$) with mild dust extinction ($A_V\sim0.1\,\rm mag$), and a smaller radius $\sim20\,\rm pc$. We identify galaxies with similar colors in a high-redshift simulation, finding their star formation histories to be out of phase. With an estimated stellar mass ratio of roughly 2:1 and physical projected separation $\sim400\,\rm pc$, we may be witnessing a galaxy merger 400 million years after the Big Bang. We also identify a candidate companion galaxy C $\sim3\,{\rm kpc}$ away, likely destined to merge with galaxies A and B. The combined light from galaxies A+B is magnified by factors of $\sim$8, 5, and 2 in three lensed images JD1, 2, and 3 with F356W fluxes $\sim322$, $203$, $86\,\rm nJy$ (AB mag 25.1, 25.6, 26.6). MACS0647$-$JD is significantly brighter than other galaxies recently discovered at similar redshifts with JWST. Without magnification, it would have AB mag 27.3 ($M_{UV}=-20.4$). With a high confidence level, we obtain a photometric redshift of $z=10.6\pm0.3$ based on photometry measured in 6 NIRCam filters spanning $1-5\rm\mu m$, out to $4300\,\r{A}$ rest-frame. Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates at z>10 are rapidly being identified in JWST/NIRCam observations. Due to the (redshifted) break produced by neutral hydrogen absorption of rest-frame UV photons, these sources are expected to drop out in the bluer filters while being well detected in redder filters. However, here we show that dust-enshrouded star-forming galaxies at lower redshifts (z<7) may also mimic the near-infrared (near-IR) colors of z>10 LBGs, representing potential contaminants in LBG candidate samples. First, we analyze CEERS-DSFG-1, a NIRCam dropout undetected in the F115W and F150W filters but detected at longer wavelengths. Combining the JWST data with (sub)millimeter constraints, including deep NOEMA interferometric observations, we show that this source is a dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at z~5.1. We also present a tentative 2.6sigma SCUBA-2 detection at 850um around a recently identified z~16 LBG candidate in the same field and show that, if the emission is real and associated with this candidate, the available photometry is consistent with a z~5 dusty galaxy with strong nebular emission lines despite its blue near-IR colors. Further observations on this candidate are imperative to mitigate the low confidence of this tentative submillimeter emission and its positional uncertainty. Our analysis shows that robust (sub)millimeter detections of NIRCam dropout galaxies likely imply z=4-6 redshift solutions, where the observed near-IR break would be the result of a strong rest-frame optical Balmer break combined with high dust attenuation and strong nebular line emission, rather than the rest-frame UV Lyman break. This provides evidence that DSFGs may contaminate searches for ultra high-redshift LBG candidates from JWST observations., Comment: Published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters (updated to match the published version)

We report the discovery of a candidate galaxy with a photo-z of z~12 in the first epoch of the JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey. Following conservative selection criteria we identify a source with a robust z_phot = 11.8^+0.3_-0.2 (1-sigma uncertainty) with m_F200W=27.3, and >7-sigma detections in five filters. The source is not detected at lambda < 1.4um in deep imaging from both HST and JWST, and has faint ~3-sigma detections in JWST F150W and HST F160W, which signal a Ly-alpha break near the red edge of both filters, implying z~12. This object (Maisie's Galaxy) exhibits F115W-F200W > 1.9 mag (2-sigma lower limit) with a blue continuum slope, resulting in 99.6% of the photo-z PDF favoring z > 11. All data quality images show no artifacts at the candidate's position, and independent analyses consistently find a strong preference for z > 11. Its colors are inconsistent with Galactic stars, and it is resolved (r_h = 340 +/- 14 pc). Maisie's Galaxy has log M*/Msol ~ 8.5 and is highly star-forming (log sSFR ~ -8.2 yr^-1), with a blue rest-UV color (beta ~ -2.5) indicating little dust though not extremely low metallicity. While the presence of this source is in tension with most predictions, it agrees with empirical extrapolations assuming UV luminosity functions which smoothly decline with increasing redshift. Should followup spectroscopy validate this redshift, our Universe was already aglow with galaxies less than 400 Myr after the Big Bang., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, ApJL in press. We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five $z>5$ galaxies observed by the JWST Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain \textit{absolute} spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to $z\sim3$ galaxies in the literature, the $z>5$ galaxies have similar [OIII]$\lambda$5008/H$\beta$ ratios, similar [OIII]$\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$ ratios, and higher ($\sim$0.5 dex) [NeIII]$\lambda$3870/[OII]$\lambda$3728 ratios. We compare the observations to MAPPINGS V photoionization models and find that the measured [NeIII]$\lambda$3870/[OII]$\lambda$3728, [OIII]$\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$, and [OIII]$\lambda$5008/H$\beta$ emission-line ratios are consistent with an interstellar medium that has very high ionization ($\log(Q) \simeq 8-9$, units of cm~s$^{-1}$), low metallicity ($Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.2$), and very high pressure ($\log(P/k) \simeq 8-9$, units of cm$^{-3}$). The combination of [OIII]$\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$ and [OIII]$\lambda$(4960+5008)/H$\beta$ line ratios indicate very high electron temperatures of $4.1<\log(T_e/{\rm K})<4.4$, further implying metallicities of $Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.2$ with the application of low-redshift calibrations for ``$T_e$-based'' metallicities. We use deep spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide-Field-Camera 3 (WFC3) IR grisms combined with broad-band photometry to study the stellar populations, gas ionization and chemical abundances in star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 1.1-2.3$. The data stem from the CANDELS Lyman-$\alpha$ Emission At Reionization (CLEAR) survey. At these redshifts the grism spectroscopy measure the [OII] 3727, 3729, [OIII] 4959, 5008, H-$\beta$ strong emission features, which constrain the ionization parameter and oxygen abundance of the nebular gas. We compare the line flux measurements to predictions from updated photoionization models (MAPPINGS (Kewley et al. 2019), which include an updated treatment of nebular gas pressure, log P/k = $n_e T_e$. Compared to low-redshift samples ($z\sim 0.2$) at fixed stellar mass, llog M / M$_\odot$ = 9.4-9.8, the CLEAR galaxies at z=1.35 (z=1.90) have lower gas-phase metallicity, $\Delta$(log Z) = 0.25 (0.35) dex, and higher ionization parameters, $\Delta$(log q) = 0.25 (0.35) dex, where U = q/c. We provide updated analytic calibrations between the [OIII], [OII], and H-$\beta$ emission line ratios, metallicity, and ionization parameter. The CLEAR galaxies show that at fixed stellar mass, the gas ionization parameter is correlated with the galaxy specific star-formation rates (sSFRs), where $\Delta$ log q = 0.4 $\Delta$(log sSFR), derived from changes in the strength of galaxy H-$\beta$ equivalent width. We interpret this as a consequence of higher gas densities, lower gas covering fractions, combined with higher escape fraction of H-ionizing photons. We investigate how HII region temperature structure assumptions affect "direct-method" spatially-resolved metallicity observations using multispecies auroral lines in a galaxy from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. SAMI609396B, at redshift $z=0.018$, is a low-mass galaxy in a minor merger with intense star formation, analogous to conditions at high redshifts. We use three methods to derive direct metallicities and compare with strong-line diagnostics. The spatial metallicity trends show significant differences among the three direct methods. Our first method is based on the commonly used electron temperature $T_e$([OIII]) from the [OIII]$\lambda$4363 auroral line and a traditional $T_e$([OII]) -- $T_e$([OIII]) calibration. The second method applies a recent empirical correction to the O$^+$ abundance from the [OIII]/[OII] strong-line ratio. The third method infers the $T_e$([OII]) from the [SII]$\lambda\lambda$4069,76 auroral lines. The first method favours a positive metallicity gradient along SAMI609396B, whereas the second and third methods yield flattened gradients. Strong-line diagnostics produce mostly flat gradients, albeit with unquantified contamination from shocked regions. We conclude that overlooked assumptions about the internal temperature structure of HII regions in the direct method can lead to large discrepancies in metallicity gradient studies. Our detailed analysis of SAMI609396B underlines that high-accuracy metallicity gradient measurements require a wide array of emission lines and improved spatial resolutions in order to properly constrain excitation sources, physical conditions, and temperature structures of the emitting gas. Integral-field spectroscopic studies with future facilities such as JWST/NIRSpec and ground-based ELTs will be crucial in minimising systematic effects on measured gradients in distant galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

For studies of galaxy formation and evolution, one of the major benefits of the James Webb Space Telescope is that space-based IFUs like those on its NIRSpec and MIRI instruments will enable spatially resolved spectroscopy of distant galaxies, including spectroscopy at the scale of individual star-forming regions in galaxies that have been gravitationally lensed. In the meantime, there is only a very small subset of lensed sources where work like this is possible even with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 infrared channel grisms. We examine two of these sources, SDSS J1723+3411 and SDSS J2340+2947, using HST WFC3/IR grism data and supporting spatially-unresolved spectroscopy from several ground-based instruments to explore the size of spatial variations in observed strong emission line ratios like O32, R23, which are sensitive to ionization parameter and metallicity, and the Balmer decrement as an indicator of reddening. We find significant spatial variation in the reddening and the reddening-corrected O32 and R23 values which correspond to spreads of a few tenths of a dex in ionization parameter and metallicity. We also find clear evidence of a negative radial gradient in star formation in SDSS J2340+2947 and tentative evidence of one in SDSS J1723+3411, though its star formation is quite asymmetric. Finally, we find that reddening can vary enough spatially to make spatially-resolved reddening corrections necessary in order to characterize gradients in line ratios and the physical conditions inferred from them, necessitating the use of space-based IFUs for future work on larger, more statistically robust samples., Comment: 24 pages, including references, 6 tables, 17 figures, and appendix. We review the use of emission-lines for understanding galaxy evolution, focusing on excitation source, metallicity, ionization parameter, ISM pressure and electron density. We show that the UV, optical and infrared contain complementary diagnostics that can probe the conditions within different nebular ionization zones. In anticipation of upcoming telescope facilities, we provide new self-consistent emission-line diagnostic calibrations for complete spectral coverage from the UV to the infrared. These diagnostics can be used in concert to understand how fundamental galaxy properties have changed across cosmic time. We describe new 2D and 3D emission-line diagnostics to separate the contributions from star formation, AGN and shocks using integral field spectroscopy. We discuss the physics, benefits, and caveats of emission-line diagnostics, including the effect of theoretical model uncertainties, diffuse ionized gas, and sample selection bias. Accounting for complex density gradients and temperature profiles is critical for reliably estimating the fundamental properties of H ii regions and galaxies. Diffuse ionized gas can raise metallicity estimates, flatten metallicity gradients, and introduce scatter in ionization parameter measurements. We derive new self-consistent theoretical UV, optical, and IR diagnostics for the ISM pressure and electron density in the ionized nebulae of star-forming galaxies. Our UV diagnostics utilize the inter-combination, forbidden and resonance lines of silicon, carbon, aluminum, neon, and nitrogen. We also calibrate the optical and IR forbidden lines of oxygen, argon, nitrogen and sulfur. We show that line ratios used as ISM pressure diagnostics depend on the gas-phase metallicity with a residual dependence on the ionization parameter of the gas. In addition, the traditional electron density diagnostic [S II] {\lambda}6731/[S II] {\lambda}6717 is strongly dependent on the gas-phase metallicity. We show how different emission-line ratios are produced in different ionization zones in our theoretical nebulae. The [S II] and [O II] ratios are produced in different zones, and should not be used interchangeably to measure the electron density of the gas unless the electron temperature is known to be constant. We review the temperature and density distributions observed within H II regions and discuss the implications of these distributions on measuring the electron density of the gas. Many H II regions contain radial variations in density. We suggest that the ISM pressure is a more meaningful quantity to measure in H II regions or galaxies. Specific combinations of line ratios can cover the full range of ISM pressures (4 < log(P/k) < 9). As H II regions become resolved at increasingly high redshift through the next generation telescopes, we anticipate that these diagnostics will be important for understanding the conditions around the young, hot stars from the early universe to the present day., Comment: 21 figures, 3 tables, 43 pages

We examine the diagnostic power of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) nebular emission lines, and compare them to more commonly used rest-frame optical emission lines, using the test case of a single star-forming knot of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at redshift z~1.7. This galaxy has complete coverage of all the major rest-frame UV and optical emission lines from Magellan/MagE and Keck/NIRSPEC. Using the full suite of diagnostic lines, we infer the physical properties: nebular electron temperature (T_e), electron density (n_e), oxygen abundance (log(O/H)), ionisation parameter (log(q)) and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure (log(P/k)). We examine the effectiveness of the different UV, optical and joint UV-optical spectra in constraining the physical conditions. Using UV lines alone we can reliably estimate log(q), but the same is difficult for log(O/H). UV lines yield a higher (~1.5 dex) log(P/k) than the optical lines, as the former probes a further inner nebular region than the latter. For this comparison, we extend the existing Bayesian inference code IZI, adding to it the capability to infer ISM pressure simultaneously with metallicity and ionisation parameter. We study and compare different examples of stellar evolutionary synthesis input parameters used to produce photoionisation model grids using the MAPPINGS V modelling code. The aim of this study is to (a) explore the systematic effects of various stellar evolutionary synthesis model parameters on the interpretation of emission lines in optical strong-line diagnostic diagrams, (b) characterise the combination of parameters able to reproduce the spread of local galaxies located in the star-forming region in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and (c) investigate the emission from extremely metal-poor galaxies using photoionisation models. We explore and compare the stellar input ionising spectrum (stellar population synthesis code [Starburst99, SLUG, BPASS], stellar evolutionary tracks, stellar atmospheres, star-formation history, sampling of the initial mass function) as well as parameters intrinsic to the H II region (metallicity, ionisation parameter, pressure, H II region boundedness). We also perform a comparison of the photoionisation codes MAPPINGS and CLOUDY. On the variations in the ionising spectrum model parameters, we find that the differences in strong emission-line ratios between varying models for a given input model parameter are small, on average ~0.1 dex. An average difference of ~0.1 dex in emission-line ratio is also found between models produced with MAPPINGS and CLOUDY. Large differences between the emission-line ratios are found when comparing intrinsic H II region parameters. We find that low-metallicity galaxies are better explained by a density-bounded H II region and higher pressures better encompass the spread of galaxies at high redshift., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Using integral field data we extract the optical spectra of shocked interstellar clouds in Kepler's supernova remnant located in the inner regions of our Galaxy, as well as in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), NGC6822 and IC 1613. Using self-consistent shock modelling, we make a new determination of the chemical composition of the interstellar medium (ISM) in N, O, Ne, S, Cl and Ar in these galaxies and obtain accurate estimates of the fraction of refractory grains destroyed in the shock. By comparing our derived abundances with those obtained in recent works using observations of B stars, F supergiant stars and HII regions, we provide a new calibration for abundance scaling in the range $7.9 \lesssim 12+\log {\mathrm {O/H}} \lesssim 9.1$., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, 16 pp, 10 figs

We present a sweeping preconditioner for quasi-optimal Domain Decomposition Methods (DDM) applied to Helmholtz transmission problems in periodic layered media. Quasi-optimal DD (QO DD) for Helmholtz equations rely on transmission operators that are approximations of Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operators. Employing shape perturbation series, we construct approximations of DtN operators corresponding to periodic domains, which we then use as transmission operators in a non-overlapping DD framework. The Robin-to-Robin (RtR) operators that are the building blocks of DDM are expressed via robust boundary integral equation formulations. We use Nystr\"om discretizations of quasi-periodic boundary integral operators to construct high-order approximations of RtR. Based on the premise that the quasi-optimal transmission operators should act like perfect transparent boundary conditions, we construct an approximate LU factorization of the tridiagonal QO DD matrix associated with periodic layered media, which is then used as a double sweep preconditioner. We present a variety of numerical results that showcase the effectiveness of the sweeping preconditioners applied to QO DD for the iterative solution of Helmholtz transmission problems in periodic layered media.

We present a new basis for scaling abundances with total metallicity in nebular photoionisation models, based on extensive Milky Way stellar abundance data, to replace the uniform scaling normally used in the analysis of HII regions. Our goal is to provide a single scaling method and local abundance reference standard for use in nebular modelling and its key inputs, the stellar atmosphere and evolutionary track models. We introduce a parametric enrichment factor, zeta, to describe how atomic abundances scale with total abundance, and which allows for a simple conversion between scales based on different reference elements (usually oxygen or iron) . The models and parametric description provide a more physically realistic approach than simple uniform abundance scaling. With appropriate parameters, the methods described here may be applied to HII regions in the Milky Way, large and dwarf galaxies in the local universe, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), and to star forming regions at high redshift., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. We report here on the discovery of faint extended wings of H\alpha\ observed out to an apparent velocity of ~ 7600 km/s in the Orion Nebula (M42) and in five HII regions in the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds. We show that, these wings are caused by Raman scattering of both the O I and Si II resonance lines and stellar continuum UV photons with H I followed by radiative decay to the H I n=2 level. The broad wings also seen in H\beta\ and in H\gamma\ result from Raman scattering of the UV continuum in the H I n=4 and n=5 levels respectively.The Raman scattering fluorescence is correlated with the intensity of the narrow permitted lines of O I and Si II. In the case of Si II, this is explained by radiative pumping of the same 1023.7\AA\ resonance line involved in the Raman scattering by the Ly\beta\ radiation field. The subsequent radiative cascade produces enhanced Si II 5978.9, 6347.1$ and 6371.4\AA\ permitted transitions. Finally we show that in O I, radiative pumping of the 1025.76\AA\ resonance line by the Lyman series radiation field is also the cause of the enhancement in the permitted lines of this species lying near H\alpha\ in wavelength, but here the process is a little more complex. This Letter presents a new, remarkably simple diagnostic specifically designed to derive chemical abundances for high redshift galaxies. It uses only the H \alpha, [N II] and [S II] emission lines, which can usually be observed in a single gating stetting, and is almost linear up to an abundance of 12+log (O/H) = 9.05. It can be used over the full abundance range encountered in high redshift galaxies. By its use of emission lines located close together in wavelength, it is also independent of reddening. Our diagnostic depends critically on the calibration of the N/O ratio. However, by using realistic stellar atmospheres combined with the N/O vs. O/H abundance calibration derived locally from stars and H II regions, and allowing for the fact that high-redshift H II regions have both high ionisation parameters \emph{and} high gas pressures, we find that the observations of high-redshift galaxies can be simply explained by the models without having to invoke arbitrary changes in N/O ratio, or the presence of unusual quantities of Wolf-Rayet stars in these galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science, 7pp, 4 figs

In this paper, we use the Mappings photoionization code to explore the physical parameters that impact on the measurement of electron temperature and abundance in HII regions. In the previous paper we presented observations and measurements of physical properties from the spectra of seventeen HII regions in fourteen isolated dwarf irregular galaxies from the SIGRID sample. Here, we analyze these observations further, together with three additional published data sets. We explore the effects of optical thickness, electron density, ionization parameter, ionization source, and non-equilibrium effects on the relation between electron temperature and metallicity. We present a standard model that fits the observed data remarkably well at metallicities between 1/10 and 1 solar. We investigate the effects of optically thin HII regions, and show that they can have a considerable effect on the measured electron temperature, and that there is evidence that some of the observed objects are optically thin. We look at the role of the ionization parameter and find that lower ionization parameter values give better fits at higher oxygen abundance. We show that higher pressures combined with low optical depth, and also kappa electron energy distributions at low kappa values, can generate the apparent high electron temperatures in low metallicity HII regions, and that the former provides the better fit to observations. We examine the effects of these parameters on the strong line diagnostic methods. In this paper we present the results of observations of seventeen HII regions in thirteen galaxies from the SIGRID sample of isolated gas rich irregular dwarf galaxies. The spectra of all but one of the galaxies exhibit the auroral [OIII] 4363A line, from which we calculate the electron temperature, Te, and gas-phase oxygen abundance. Five of the objects are blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, of which four have not previously been analysed spectroscopically. We include one unusual galaxy which exhibits no evidence of the [NII] {\lambda}{\lambda} 6548,6584A lines, suggesting a particularly low metallicity (< Zsolar/30). We compare the electron temperature based abundances with those derived using eight of the new strong line diagnostics presented by Dopita et al. (2013). Using a method derived from first principles for calculating total oxygen abundance, we show that the discrepancy between the Te-based and strong line gas-phase abundances have now been reduced to within ~0.07 dex. The chemical abundances are consistent with what is expected from the luminosity-metallicity relation. We derive estimates of the electron densities and find them to be between ~5 and ~100 cm-3. We find no evidence for a nitrogen plateau for objects in this sample with metallicities 0.5 > Zsolar > 0.15., Comment: 46 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, 1 appendix. We present a recalibration of the luminosity-metallicity relation for gas-rich, star-forming dwarfs to magnitudes as faint as M$_R$ ~ -13. We use the Dopita et al. (2013) metallicity calibrations to calibrate the relation for all of the data in this analysis. In metallicity-luminosity space we find two sub-populations within a sample of high-confidence SDSS DR8 star-forming galaxies; 52% are metal-rich giants and 48% are metal-medium galaxies. Metal-rich dwarfs classified as tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates in the literature are typically of metallicity 12 + log(O/H) = 8.70 $\pm$ 0.05, while SDSS dwarfs fainter than M$_R$ = -16 have a mean metallicity of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.28 $\pm$ 0.10, regardless of their luminosity, indicating that there is an approximate floor to the metallicity of low luminosity galaxies. Our hydrodynamical simulations predict that TDGs should have metallicities elevated above the normal luminosity-metallicity relation. Metallicity can therefore be a useful diagnostic for identifying TDG candidate populations in the absence of tidal tails. At magnitudes brighter than M$_R$ ~ -16 our sample of 53 star-forming galaxies in 9 HI gas-rich groups is consistent with the normal relation defined by the SDSS sample. At fainter magnitudes there is an increase in dispersion in metallicity of our sample, suggestive of a wide range of HI content and environment. In our sample we identify three (16% of dwarfs) strong TDG candidates (12 + log(O/H) > 8.6), and four (21%) very metal poor dwarfs (12 + log(O/H) < 8.0), which are likely gas-rich dwarfs with recently ignited star formation., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Isolated dwarf galaxies, especially those situated in voids, may provide insight into primordial conditions in the Universe and the physical processes that govern star formation in undisturbed stellar systems. The metallicity of H ii regions in such galaxies is key to investigating this possibility. From the SIGRID sample of isolated dwarf galaxies, we have identified two exceptionally isolated objects, the Local Void galaxy [KK98]246 (ESO 461-G036) and another somewhat larger dwarf irregular on the edge of the Local Void, MCG-01-41-006 (HIPASS J1609- 04). We report our measurements of the nebular metallicities in these objects. The first object has a single low luminosity Hii region, while the second is in a more vigorous star forming phase with several bright H ii regions. We find that the metallicities in both galaxies are typical for galaxies of this size, and do not indicate the presence of any primordial gas, despite (for [KK98]246) the known surrounding large reservoir of neutral Hydrogen., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication is Astrophysical Jornal

Recently, \citet{Nicholls12}, inspired by \emph{in situ} observations of solar system astrophysical plasmas, suggested that the electrons in \HII regions are characterised by a $\kappa$-distribution of electron energies rather than by a simple Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. Here we have collected together the new atomic data within a modified photoionisation code to explore the effects of both the new atomic data and the $\kappa$-distribution on the strong-line techniques used to determine chemical abundances in \HII regions. By comparing the recombination temperatures ($T_{\rm rec}$) with the forbidden line temperatures ($T_{\rm FL}$) we conclude that $ \kappa \sim 20$. While representing only a mild deviation from equilibrium, this is sufficient to strongly influence abundances determined using methods which depend on measurements of the electron temperature from forbidden lines. We present a number of new emission line ratio diagnostics which cleanly separate the two parameters determining the optical spectrum of \HII regions - the ionisation parameter $q$ or $\cal{U}$ and the chemical abundance; 12+log(O/H). An automated code to extract these parameters is presented. Using the homogeneous dataset from \citet{vanZee98}, we find self-consistent results between all these different diagnostics. The systematic errors between different line ratio diagnostics are much smaller than was found in the earlier strong line work. In this paper we develop tools for observers to use when analysing nebular spectra for temperatures and metallicities, with two goals: to present a new, simple method to calculate equilibrium electron temperatures for collisionally excited line flux ratios, using the latest atomic data; and to adapt current methods to include the effects of possible non-equilibrium '{\kappa}' electron energy distributions. Adopting recent collision strength data for [O iii], [S iii], [O ii], [S ii], and [N ii], we find that existing methods based on older atomic data seriously overestimate the electron temperatures, even when considering purely Maxwellian statistics. If {\kappa} distributions exist in H ii regions and planetary nebulae as they do in solar system plasmas, it is important to investigate the observational consequences. This paper continues our previous work on the {\kappa} distribution (Nicholls et al. 2012). We present simple formulaic methods that allow observers to (a) measure equilibrium electron temperatures and atomic abundances using the latest atomic data, and (b) to apply simple corrections to existing equilibrium analysis techniques to allow for possible non-equilibrium effects. These tools should lead to better consistency in temperature and abundance measurements, and a clearer understanding of the physics of H ii regions and planetary nebulae., Comment: 15 figures. An analysis of the OIII and SIII temperatures measurements compiled by Perez-Montero et al. of emission line objects consisting of HII galaxies, giant extragalactic HII regions, Galactic HII regions and HII regions from the Magellanic Clouds, reveals that the OIII temperatures are higher than the corresponding values from SIII in most objects with gas metallicities in excess of 0.2 solar. We explore the possibility of temperature inhomogeneities. We also explored metallicity inhomogeneities by combining two models of widely different metallicity. We calculate models that consider a non-Mawell-Boltzmann distributions for the electron energies (kappa parametrization). We also consider shock heating within the photoionized nebula. Varying the various input parameters in the pure photoionization case does not reproduce the observed nebular temperatures and neither does having local temperature inhomogeneities. We find that (1) metallicity inhomogeneities of the nebular gas, (2) shock waves of velocities < 60 km/s propagating in a photoionized plasma, and (3) an electron energy distribution given by a kappa-distribution, are successful in reproducing the observed excess in the [OIII] temperatures. Shock models, however, would require proper 3D hydrodynamical simulations to become a fully developed alternative while models with metallicity inhomogeneities appear to fail in metal poor nebulae, since they result in T_O++(rec)> T_OIII., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted (10 sept. 2012) for publication in A&A

The measurement of electron temperatures and metallicities in H ii regions and Planetary Nebulae (PNe) has-for several decades-presented a problem: results obtained using different techniques disagree. What it worse, they disagree consistently. There have been numerous attempts to explain these discrepancies, but none has provided a satisfactory solution to the problem. In this paper, we explore the possibility that electrons in H ii regions and PNe depart from a Maxwell-Boltzmann equilibrium energy distribution. We adopt a "kappa-distribution" for the electron energies. Such distributions are widely found in Solar System plasmas, where they can be directly measured. This simple assumption is able to explain the temperature and metallicity discrepancies in H ii regions and PNe arising from the different measurement techniques. We find that the energy distribution does not need to depart dramatically from an equilibrium distribution. From an examination of data from Hii regions and PNe it appears that kappa ~ 10 is sufficient to encompass nearly all objects. We argue that the kappa-distribution offers an important new insight into the physics of gaseous nebulae, both in the Milky Way and elsewhere, and one that promises significantly more accurate estimates of temperature and metallicity in these regions., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, published in ApJ

Using an optically-unbiased selection process based on the HIPASS neutral hydrogen survey, we have selected a sample of 83 spatially isolated, gas-rich dwarf galaxies in the southern hemisphere with cz between 350 and 1650 km s-1, and with R-band luminosities and HI masses less than that of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The sample is an important population of dwarf galaxies in the local Universe, all with ongoing star formation, and most of which have no existing spectroscopic data. We are measuring the chemical abundances of these galaxies, using the Integral Field Spectrograph on the ANU 2.3m telescope, the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS).
