The increasing prominence of alternative news media has been identified as a particular challenge to contemporary established journalism, next to collapsing financial models, platform dependency, falling levels of trust and increased competition. Against this background, this study examines how news editors from 23 established news organizations in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark view the rise and role of alternative news media and thereby the boundaries of the journalistic field. Combining strategic action field theory, boundary work and the concept of metajournalistic discourse, it identifies three metajournalistic discourses—We are the (real) journalists, We are in control (for now), and We are under pressure. Together, these metajournalistic discourses portray alternative news media as a challenge that largely has been overcome, and as currently insignificant actors that clearly do not represent "real journalism". At the same time, the discourses also display concerns that alternative news media might represent potential future field ruptures via their association with broader potentially detrimental media developments, such as genre-confused media audiences or harassment of journalists. This study examines how the production of news making is evidenced in published content about the complex social phenomenon of murder-suicide. Building on Reese and Shoemaker's hierarchical model (2016), this study aims to understand the impact of the individual, routines, ideological, organisational and social institution levels on news content surrounding a case of murder-suicide in the Republic of Ireland. Data was gathered from in-depth interviews with journalists and news editors who detailed the nexus of competing interests that influence their work processes. Findings reveal how organisational structures, coupled with ideological orientations, industrial routines and the professional ideology of objectivity, acted as crucial gatekeepers, encouraging a dependency on elite sources. A crime narrative supported through the operationalisation of a media template perpetuated a hierarchy of victims. These representations served to mirror the institutionalised patriarchal power. Geoffrey Nyarota, a Zimbabwean journalist of note, is renowned for his investigative journalistic skills and numerous conflicts with political authorities. He is probably the most hired and fired newspaper editor in post independence Zimbabwe. In this paper, I put forward the argument that in his memoir, Nyarota uses historical recurrence as a motif and narrative strategy to recreate a personal life story that is fraught with events that keep repeating themselves in his life. By tracing his life story from the colonial period to post independence Zimbabwe, and the near tragic events that continually trouble his life, Nyarota reconstructs a life narrative that is haunted by the curse of historical recurrence in a way that makes a personal curse become the curse of the nation of Zimbabwe. Anne-Christine Klotz's monograph explores the Jewish reaction from East-Central and Eastern Europe to National Socialism between 1930 and 1941. The book focuses on four Yiddish newspapers based in Warsaw and their journalists, examining how they responded to political developments in Germany and the persecution of Jews. The author highlights the ambivalent feelings of Warsaw's Jewish journalists and Polish Jews towards Germany and German Jews, and discusses the role of the Jewish press in disseminating information and ideas within the Jewish community in Poland. The book also explores the reporting activities of Polish Jewish journalists in Berlin, the information contained in press releases, Yiddish travelogues from Nazi Germany, and the activism of Polish Jewry against Nazi Germany. The historiography of modern Hebrew culture views early twentieth-century Russia largely through the lens of canonical literature. However, Hebrew played a role in many other aspects of Jewish society, prominent among them children's literature. By examining readers' letters published in four Hebrew children's magazines, this article explores the spread and meaning of the language for different sectors of Russian Jewry. It claims that Hebrew played a role in Jewish modernization for those who did not identify with Zionism and even those who claimed to reject modernism entirely. To better understand East European Jewish life through the prism of multifaceted Hebrew culture, this article studies publications of varied ideological positions—Zionist, nonpartisan nationalist, and Orthodox—to provide a more comprehensive picture of Jewish perception of Hebrew. It shows how, despite their disparities, the four publications employed similar strategies when addressing young readers, directing them to a desired worldview and mobilizing them to social activity. The readers' letters in these magazines reveal the experience of learning, reading, and speaking the renewed language in the context of family life, social pressure, and gender dynamics. They provide essential information about methods, habits, and patterns of using Hebrew inside and outside the classroom. In addition, the letters shed light on the interaction between children and adults—parents, teachers, and newspaper editors—against the backdrop of the vibrant ideological discourse of the era. Research on written newspapers of the Saxon period has been ongoing for several decades. By looking at the avis from the perspective of their editors and purveyors, we get a fuller picture of the mentality of society. Elżbieta Sieniawska, née Lubomirska (d. 1729), Wife of the Castellan of Krakow and one of the most enterprising magnates at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, collected information through her intelligence services. Had it not been for their efforts and every attempt to provide the Krakow castellan with news, it is likely that Sieniawska would have had serious problems keeping her knowledge of the country and the world up to date. Distinguishing in the article the profiles of spies, postal workers and newspaper editors, the author shows not only previously unpublished facts from the life of the information services, but above all points to the dependencies between their services. This study provides insights on how journalists in the Western Balkans conceptualize and practice audience engagement during electoral campaigns. Taking a holistic approach, we first explore audience demand and news supply of strategic and negative election news on Facebook, then turn to news editors to explore what type of audience logic drives their reporting. Our data confirm previous findings about audience demand for strategic news but contradict the predominance of audience negativity bias in the context of Southeast Europe. These findings support generic trends in how social media audiences engage with political information, but also emphasize the importance of the socio-political context as a determinant of audience engagement with online news. Interview data identified an alignment between journalists' imagined readership preferences with the reality, yet reporting patterns on Facebook do not entirely follow engagement trends. Together, these findings suggest that journalism culture developed in this region is more nuanced than previously defined, while news editors embrace new technologies to serve the commercial needs and audience strengthening logics in parallel during electoral campaigns. Mark Twain's obsession with and popularization of Isaac Bromley's original horsecar jingle not only inspired an entire school of horsecar poems but also parodies of them that satirized political campaigns, public corruption, organized labor, vices such as gambling and alcoholism, the work of newspaper editors as well as admonitions to respect the law. During the Great War, parodies of the jingle commended the women knitting brigades on the home front. The parodies also led to the introduction of jingles in advertising. Coping with misinformation in a media environment is one of the challenges that undermine the role of the media. The pandemic of Covid-19 influenced the media organisations in their working processes significantly and a decrease in accuracy was one of the findings of our study. This paper examines the impact of the pandemic in local media to journalists' practices and the role of the media. We aimed to research the effects of the pandemic in the local environment on journalistic procedures and the media's role after this period. In answering the research questions, we used the method of a structured questionnaire for journalists and semi-structured in-depth interviews for local News Editors. We aimed to research the media production practices on various levels of professionals included in local news. We detected those production practices that could endanger the credibility of the local media. The findings provided insights into how Slovenian local journalists and editors define, understand, and practice fact-checking. The results led to an understanding that the perception of the media role in offering information was higher during the pandemic period and that human verification is key in ensuring the credibility of content in local newsrooms. This study presents a teaching experiment in which students composed a letter to the editor that drew on political economy analysis with an impressive 40 percent publication rate in a major Asian newspaper. In contrast to a purely mock exercise, or the submission of op-ed pieces with a much lower chance of being published, this activity offered students the opportunity to communicate their positions to the community. Instructors must be attuned to privacy concerns and the article appraises the advantages and disadvantages of four approaches to public writing. Results from a questionnaire and focus groups indicated that this short-form writing helped students to construct a single argument, broaden their global outlook, critically assess media information, and develop a more concise writing style. However, some students struggled to connect their letter to the course content. The article thus ends by proposing ways that the assignment may be modified, such as linking letters to another assignment, supporting students by sharing suggestions from newspaper editors and scholars whose letters are regularly published, and outlining a collaborative writing exercise building on letters to the editor as a foundation. The addition of the First Amendment to the Indian Constitution is considered a crucial moment in the constitutional history of liberty of speech and expression, and by extension, freedom of the press, in postcolonial India. Aimed at limiting the right to free speech and expression through several caveats, the attempt to pass the amendment roused fierce press protest led by the All-India Newspaper Editors' Conference (AINEC). Such protest notwithstanding, the Nehru government succeeded in passing the amendment through Parliament. This article seeks to revisit the months of April to July 1951 to understand how the press and, in particular, its primary organization—AINEC—understood the threat to their liberty and organized against it. In particular, the arguments put forth by AINEC and the methods applied by its leaders to unify the press shall be studied through the letters, meetings, and editorials of AINEC and its major functionaries. The reactions these endeavors elicited, in turn, shall be studied to explain why the attempted unity, and the larger protest, ultimately failed, and what this failure can explain about the limits of press unity and the difficulties of opposing a nationalist government in early postcolonial India. Automatically generating descriptions for disaster news images could effectively accelerate the spread of disaster message and lighten the burden of news editors from tedious news materials. Image caption algorithms are remarkable for generating captions directly from the content of the image. However, current image caption algorithms trained on existing image caption datasets fail to describe the disaster images with fundamental news elements. In this paper, we developed a large-scale disaster news image Chinese caption dataset (DNICC19k), which collected and annotated enormous news images related to disaster. Furthermore, we proposed a spatial-aware topic driven caption network (STCNet) to encode the interrelationships between these news objects and generate descriptive sentences related to news topics. STCNet firstly constructs a graph representation based on objects feature similarity. The graph reasoning module uses the spatial information to infer the weights of aggregated adjacent nodes according to a learnable Gaussian kernel function. Finally, the generation of news sentences are driven by the spatial-aware graph representations and the news topics distribution. Experimental results demonstrate that STCNet trained on DNICC19k could not only automatically creates descriptive sentences related to news topics for disaster news images, but also outperforms benchmark models such as Bottom-up, NIC, Show attend and AoANet on multiple evaluation metrics, achieving CIDEr/BLEU-4 scores of 60.26 and 17.01, respectively. This paper argues that editors of newspapers in the US, in their capacity to select and arrange news related to tragic events in Palestine/Israel, tend to follow an underlying political agenda largely conforming with US foreign policy towards Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab or Moslem world more generally. This is part of a popular American geopolitical imaginary, now being reconfigured through the primacy of 'terror' as the enemy number one of the American way of life, and most certainly, by proxy, of the Israeli way of life or the life of any Washington-oriented democracy. Reportage on cases of Palestinian tragedy and agony were represented as part of or the byproduct of protracted conflict within a kind of historical amnesia or bracketing out: Israeli state policy which victimises the Palestinians tends to be rendered invisible in such manipulation of reported reality. In other words, a deft editorial arrangement deflects possible blame on Israel by removing the events from their broader context and time frame. Disparities continue to pose major challenges in various aspects of science. One such aspect is editorial board composition, which has been shown to exhibit racial and geographical disparities. However, the literature on this subject lacks longitudinal studies quantifying the degree to which the racial composition of editors reflects that of scientists. Other aspects that may exhibit racial disparities include the time spent between the submission and acceptance of a manuscript and the number of citations a paper receives relative to textually similar papers, but these have not been studied to date. To fill this gap, we compile a dataset of 1,000,000 papers published between 2001 and 2020 by six publishers, while identifying the handling editor of each paper. Using this dataset, we show that most countries in Asia, Africa, and South America (where the majority of the population is ethnically non-White) have fewer editors than would be expected based on their share of authorship. Focusing on US-based scientists reveals Black as the most underrepresented race. In terms of acceptance delay, we find, again, that papers from Asia, Africa, and South America spend more time compared to other papers published in the same journal and the same year. Regression analysis of US-based papers reveals that Black authors suffer from the greatest delay. Finally, by analyzing citation rates of US-based papers, we find that Black and Hispanic scientists receive significantly fewer citations compared to White ones doing similar research. This experiment (N = 591) tests whether audiences adjust their standards for what qualifies as fair journalism based the transparency of news editors, the source of the news, and the target of an accusation. In the context of a whistleblower scandal, the results suggest the relationship between the audience member's ideology and the news story publisher and target influence what details the audience thinks journalists should reveal. Kiều Nguyệt Nga is the main character in the well-known Nôm narrative poem Lục Vân Tiên by Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, the most famous Confucian scholar and poet of Southern Vietnam in the second half of the nineteenth century. This character represented the ideal of a woman for Nguyễn Đình Chiểu in Confucianism – viz. Sương Nguyệt Anh (1864–1921), who was Nguyễn Đình Chiểu's fourth daughter. She was a poet and also the first female editor of a newspaper for women in Vietnam in modern times. This article examines the transformation of Confucian ideals from the literary character Kiều Nguyệt Nga to the historical figure of Sương Nguyệt Anh, who serves as a case study that contributes to clarifying the appearance of Confucianism and the woman question in the Southern Region during the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century. The popular and conservative Confucianism of Southern Vietnam had weakened under the influence of Western culture, but many elements were still reserved in the early twentieth century. Selected by newspaper editors to keep specific topics current in the news, Letters to the Editor (LTE) have long intertwined with historical events, among which the twentieth century Armenian genocide. At that time international humanitarian workers and political personalities made appeals to the reading public and expressed their indignation for the violence perpetrated to Armenian civilians. Rarely, however, have LTE been studied for their linguistic features. The article reports that Avi Lan, a former journalist and newspaper editor and Addie Bentov Lan, a former social media manager created Statusim Metzaytzim, a Facebook page in 2010. Topics include examines the page contained a collection of content found across the Internet such as memes, videos, jokes and commentary on Israeli society.

Given rising hostility toward journalists in the United States, this monograph illuminates how journalists experience hostility from news sources. Drawing on 38 in-depth interviews with U.S. journalists, this project uses the theory of intersectionality to understand how journalists experienced hostility and how they changed their journalistic routines in response. Participants described four forms of hostility from news sources: general distrust of the news media, boundary crossing, safety-violating hostility, and microaggressions. Boundary crossing was primarily used toward younger women, and microaggressions were used toward White women and men and women of color. Although safety-violating hostility occurred least often, it was the most intense form of hostility and was disproportionately experienced by women, whose gender, race, age, tenure, and even their geographical location worked against them to create hostile and unsafe situations. These findings should inform how news editors think about story assignments and reporters' safety on the job so that editors empathize more with reporters and do away with more dangerous reporting scenarios, such as person-on-the-street interviews and door knocking. Finally, as many reporters were unprepared for the hostility they experienced, journalism instructors should focus on hostility as a reality journalists will likely face in the field. This study examines how the United States community newspapers engage community members and how editors view challenges of citizen participatory and collaboration practices with particular focus on ethical issues. To address this, the study conducted a content analysis of interactive news features offered by online newspapers and in-depth interviews with news editors. Findings reveal various ways that local newsrooms seemingly invite citizens to participate in telling the community news. Letters-to-the-editor were discussed most frequently in all aspects of their discussions—both in positive and negative ways. Legal concerns did not arise as such concerns were avoided and filtered before inclusion and publication, but ethical considerations were also discussed modestly. Editors as a whole generally turned to ideas reflected in traditional journalism codes of conduct for citizens as a guide in their practice of submitting content with primary focus placed on truth telling, independence, and transparency. Implications are discussed in terms of citizen news engagement, news collaboration, and participatory journalism and the continued institutional control of content through normalization of the news and separation between professional and citizen. The drastic increase in domestic production of natural gas due to the fracking boom prompted efforts to develop a robust infrastructure in the U.S. to export natural gas. Given environmental concerns over increased fossil fuel development, significant opposition mobilized to "keep it [fossil fuels] in the ground" by acting to prevent not only natural gas production but also its transportation via pipelines and shipping via export terminals. Our analysis focuses on the latter component, specifically examining the long history of proposed liquefied natural gas infrastructure in two coastal communities in Oregon. Members of the public engaged in the formal siting processes and mobilized both opposition and support. We examine their use of collective action frames in both comments at public hearings and letters to the editor in local newspapers (N = 4618) over the 16 years that these proposals were under consideration, quantifying the dynamic nature of framing using computational text analysis. We find that both groups vary their use of framing over time and by venue, reacting to exogenous events (e.g., September 11th, Fukushima) and tailor their messages to the context (e.g., an in-person hearing or a letter to the editor). Opponents concentrated on potential threats, initially emphasizing local impacts like tanker and pipeline safety but eventually focusing on climate concerns. Supporters, meanwhile, stressed the economic benefits of the projects but alternated their specific framing based on venue—focusing on employment when talking to regulatory agencies and community economic benefits in letters. While this juxtaposition of economic benefits and environmental threats was a key part of public discourse, opponents also expanded their framing to questions of local sovereignty and governance, allowing a broader coalition to develop and ultimately succeeding in defeating the proposals. Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the world as a terminal disease, different lexical items have been adopted by Nigerian News Editors in rendering news reports on the pandemic. Certainly, power and significance are embedded in these news reports and these headlines help to reveal hidden sociocultural ideologies. Thus, the present study investigates selected Covid-19 newspaper headlines in order to ascertain how newspaper headlines have been used to illuminate hidden sociocultural ideologies. The study adopts Fairclough's (1995) theory of Critical Discourse Analysis as a sociocultural practice where emphasis is made on the three dimensions (3Ds) of discourse analysis namely description, interpretation and explanation. Covid-19 newspaper headlines selected from five Nigerian Newspapers namely the Guardian, Daily Trust, Nation, Tribune and Punch newspapers are analysed thematically in a bid to ascertain how the choice of words by the editors have been used to reveal hidden ideologies. A critical analysis of the headlines reveals a covert underlying social and cultural motivation for the readers' consumption. The study further shows that covid-19 newspaper headlines perform myriads of functions from the perspective of the readers as they have implications on the social, political, economic and religious life of the readers. Following the promulgation of the 1925 Palestinian Citizenship Order-in-Council, British Mandate authorities regularly denied Palestinian citizenship to thousands of Palestinian migrants across the diaspora (mahjar) - mainly the Latin American mahjar, where the largest Palestinian communities resided. In response, Palestinians in Palestine formed the Committee for the Defense of the Rights of Palestinians in Foreign Countries in 1927. A group of nationalists, including Musa Kazim al-Husayni, submitted petitions to the Government of Palestine and the League of Nations demanding justice for migrants barred from their rights to Palestinian citizenship - and thus, to their right to return to Palestine as Palestinians. Importantly, the editors of Filastin newspaper called on Palestinian leaders to reform and unite, doing away with divisive rivalries, in order to defend the rights of Palestinian migrants. In entry after entry, Filastin decried the state of the current Palestinian leadership, stressing the interconnectedness of Palestinian migrants' struggle to secure their rights to Palestinian citizenship and the struggle to reform the faltering Palestinian nationalist movement. These efforts of Palestinians in Palestine to protest British citizenship policy and to reform the Palestinian nationalist movement through solidarity with Palestinian migrants demonstrate that Palestinian political consciousness in the interwar period formed and developed transnationally. Through their activism, Palestinians in Palestine brought Palestinian migrants' voices home, and contributed to the emergence and consolidation of a Palestinian diaspora, and to the amplification of Palestinian voices transnationally. This article examines the relationship between religion and news media through a case study of Deepika, a Malayalam-language daily published in the South Indian state of Kerala. We "thickly describe" the practices of mediation and meaning-making processes of this newspaper's editors and readers, most of whom are "Syrian Catholics." Our analysis shows that news functions as, or very similar to, religion for Deepika's partakers. We thus argue that the newspaper and religion are inseparable for a devout Syrian Catholic, and they concurrently mediate the communal and spiritual longings of the believers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
