Media coverage of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) often focuses excessively on challenges and deficits, influencing public perceptions, but there is little research on media portrayals of HBCU infractions. This study delves into the portrayal of Division I HBCU infractions from 2016 to 2020 through a textual analysis of 60 article headlines from local, regional, and national newspapers. The research examines general framing strategies, temporal changes, specific frames, prominent themes, and attribution of responsibility. Results indicate that the media often frames these infractions episodically rather than thematically over the 5-year span, with limited case details. The headlines emphasized specific issues of reprimand and redemption, often holding the organization accountable. Newspapers contribute to public opinion on athletic infractions by presenting these incidents in an engaging narrative. This study highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of how media shapes perceptions of HBCUs, especially in the context of athletic infractions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To explore the way the nursing profession was portrayed in online news coverage before and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. Background: The power of the media can be used as a tool to introduce nursing services to society, make nursing visible, and influence the public perception of nursing. Introduction: Analyzing the image of nursing as portrayed in the news can be a guide for more effective management of the media as a tool for positioning nursing in the future and presenting the right message. Methods: A qualitative design was applied. Three online newspapers published in the Turkish language—the most widely read newspapers in Turkey—were analyzed. The sample for this research consisted of 505 news articles containing the keywords "nurse" and "nursing" published before and after the COVID‐19 outbreak. The MAXQDA2022 software was used for data management. Results: The articles selected were themed as news reflecting the nursing profession negatively, positively, and neutrally. When the negative and positive themes were compared, the two most repeated subthemes included (1) working conditions and being unprofessionalism; (2) impact on health, social recognition, and neutral included only subtheme that happens to you as a citizen/individual. Conclusion: Compared with the pre‐COVID‐19 period, there was an increase in news coverage reflecting portrayed nursing positively on the nursing profession in the post‐COVID‐19 period. Mass media, which are indispensable in social communication, can be used as an effective tool to improve the image of nursing in society. Implications for nursing: From nursing students to policymakers, all professionals must act in a planned and purposeful manner to present nursing professionals positively as leaders in public healthcare. Ethnic prejudice poses great challenges to adolescents' adjustment to multicultural societies. However, little is known about the role of the media in influencing attitudes in adolescence. Combining information environment and ecological development theories, the current study examined the longitudinal associations between the quantity, valence (i.e., neutral, positive, and negative), and target (i.e., migrant, refugee, and foreigner) of the news about ethnic minority groups and youth's affective and cognitive prejudice. In total, 962 adolescents (Mage = 15.67, 48.13% females) completed questionnaires at two time points, and news data were gathered from a national newspaper. While news quantity did not matter, positive and negative news were respectively associated with reduced and increased levels of cognitive, but not affective, prejudice. Nuanced associations emerged when accounting for the news target. Results were replicated regardless of adolescents' direct consumption of newspapers. These findings highlight the role of the information environment and suggest the need to account for it in planning interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article provides valuable insights into the cultural environment of Balıkesir in the 19th century, particularly regarding language and literature. The examination of texts published in the Karesi newspaper sheds light on the cultural developments of that time. The establishment of the provincial printing house and the publication of the Karesi newspaper as the official publication of the province marked significant milestones in the cultural progress of Balıkesir. The newspaper served as a platform for intellectuals, writers, and poets to express their ideas and contributed to the cultural discourse of the province. Additionally, it offered an opportunity to observe the evolution of the Turkish language through the writings of local poets and writers, reflecting the rapid changes in the language during the 19th century. Overall, the texts published in the newspaper play a crucial role in identifying the literary figures of Balıkesir and preserving their contributions to the cultural heritage of the region. OTTOMAN Empire , *PRESS - Abstract
The 31 March Incident has an important place in the state and social life of the Second Constitutional Monarchy period. In this incident, the Ottoman press and conservative newspapers in particular polarised public opinion and created a tense atmosphere. While there were attacks on personal rights, harsh quarrels and accusations in the newspapers, Hasan Fehmi, the editor-in-chief of Serbesti, was assassinated. In this study, the Ottoman press before and after the 31 March Incident is analysed and the memoirs of the witnesses of the period are consulted. Although newspapers were partial to political factions, they were important mass communication tools and sources of the period in terms of reflecting the events daily. At the same time, memoirs are works that contain a kind of defence and accusations of the people who witnessed the period. In this context, the newspapers of the period were analysed and compared with the memoirs of statesmen and witnesses and analyses were made about the 31 March Incident. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Periodicals are valuable documents in terms of reflecting the socio-cultural dynamics of a specific period and serving as significant sources for understanding the cultural structure of that era. In this context, the Second Constitutional Era represents the beginning of a new phase in press and publishing activities. Until this period, press life had been restricted by strict rules; however, with the Second Constitutional Era, it found a freer space for expression, and a more liberal style was adopted in publications. One of the privileged newspapers of its time that began publication during the Second Constitutional Era was the Şukka Newspaper. Owned and managed by Mehmed Cemil Pekyahşi, this newspaper started its publication activities on 17 Zilhicce 1327 / 17 December 1909. The newspaper adopted the mission of addressing and criticizing the significant issues and societal problems of its time and sharing them with the public. Within the framework of this mission, it does not aim to generate any profit. There is no independent study in the literature on the Şukka Newspaper. Studies on the works of Mehmed Cemil generally focus on his aphorisms, which were published in four books and printed in the Ottoman-era alphabet. The information provided about Mehmed Cemil's life in these studies is limited. The absence of an independent study on the Şukka Newspaper, its inclusion of original content related to Mehmed Cemil's life and the events of the period, as well as its presentation of a panorama of the socio-cultural life of its time, are among the factors that make this study significant. The document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the examination of the Şukka Newspaper. First, 21 issues of the newspaper available in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Atatürk Library were obtained. Subsequently, categories were created based on the content features of the articles published in the newspaper, and evaluations were made in line with this classification. The atmosphere of freedom brought by the Second Constitutional Era played a role in the emergence of the Şukka Newspaper. However, like many other periodicals of the time, the Şukka Newspaper could not sustain a long publication life. Among the main reasons for this was the sudden increase in newspaper and printing costs. Although there is no definitive information on when the newspaper ceased publication, it was stated in the 22 issue that the newspaper was facing financial difficulties, generating no income, and even struggling to cover its expenses. Therefore, it is highly likely that the 22 issue was the final one. The newspaper's writing staff was limited, with articles written not only by Mehmed Cemil but also by Receb Vahyî and Tarakçızâde Abdülfettah. The Şukka Newspaper primarily focused on the political and social issues of the time. In addition, poetry also held a significant place in the newspaper. These poems often approach the issues of the time with a critical perspective and play an important role in reflecting the socio-cultural matters of the period. In Mehmed Cemil's poems, themes such as the problems he encountered in the bureaucratic realm, shortcomings in municipal activities, bribery, and lack of merit are prominent. Examining Mehmed Cemil's poems allows for an analysis of the socio-cultural problems of the period as reflected in his poetry. This study, which aims to introduce the Şukka Newspaper, first examines the newspaper in terms of its formal features, such as publication date, owner and manager, technical characteristics, place of printing, office, price, logo, and masthead. Its content features are analyzed under headings such as political issues, constitutionalism and despotism, views on language, summaries of news from the Ottoman Empire and other states, bureaucracy and related matters, Istanbul and its issues, trade, faith and related matters, and poetry. - Abstract
Faik Konica, this prominent figure of Albanian culture has indisputable merit for the contribution he has brought to many fields of knowledge. The first contributions to popular culture and local traditions can be found in the years of his youth, when he was publishing the well-known newspaper "Albania". An impetus to pay attention to Albanian culture was his strong feelings of love for the land of his ancestors, where he expresses his spiritual ties to the homeland. Konica in all his ways has poured his many knowledge on the country and the people, skillfully interweaving them with general historical-geographic data and especially with rich materials collected with care and competence. Having an appreciative and kind attitude towards his country, Konica could not agree with the attitude of some category of people in Albania, who denied and degraded everything that was Albanian, took the traditions and customs of the country under their feet and had inferiority complex before foreigners and took the path of exile. Faik Konica treated exile, a phenomenon that has always accompanied Albanians. He was fully convinced that Albanians should do the impossible and continue living in their territories inherited from their ancestors. He criticized exile and was against the departure of Albanians who saw it as an easier way for economic benefits. He based his position on the fact that the economic branches in Albania were not like before, they had had a noticeable rise. Despite the economic growth, he was also aware of the problems faced by the Albanians and for this he blamed the Ottoman Empire, which charged them with many taxes and did not want the economic life in Albania to increase, so that the Albanians would not earn their income and to get out of the poverty they were in. He also pointed his finger at all the neighbor countries that interfered in Albania's internal affairs and did not allow the Albanians to enjoy the profits from farming, livestock, and trading, and as a result, the Albanians stopped working their lands, and as a better choice they saw leaving and cultivating foreign lands. Analyzing the different European countries, Konica emphasized that an effort should be made to improve the economic branches in Albania even more and to benefit from it. Only with the improvement of trade, agriculture and livestock conditions would a country flourish and move forward, therefore, according to Konica, young Albanians had to take care and understand the needs of the homeland. This is because the progress, civilization and prosperity of a country were closely related to the development of economic branches, so this would be an impetus for young Albanians to stay more in their homeland and their contribution would be in the homeland, and not give their contribution to foreigners. MASS media ,NEWSPAPERS - Abstract
After 202 years (1822‒2024) of its inception in the then Gold Coast, now Ghana, and witnessing an unprecedented upsurge in publication since 1992, the circulation of print media appears unevenly distributed between the centre (capital) and the peripheries. Since there are not enough studies that explore the circulation of print media under Ghana’s fourth republic to show its circulation patterns, this article analyses print distribution figures and views sourced from newspaper firms to examine the situation within the participatory communication and the political economy of the media frameworks. It uncovers that a few newspaper firms have regional offices but do not print in those locations. They function only as bulk distribution and administrative centres that gather news to feed their headquarters in the capital. Ghana’s print industry operates a centre-periphery production and distribution framework. Furthermore, the study unveils that four factors contribute to newspaper concentration in urban centres, namely ownership tendencies, revenue motives, skilled labour availability and seat of government, and urban media credibility. Thus, Ghana experiences wide rural‒urban print disparities which retard timely information sourcing, consensus building and participatory development communication. The findings from the study have implications for Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

U.S. industrial plants emit around four billion pounds of toxic chemicals annually, posing health and economic risks. This study investigates the role of newspapers in influencing plants' toxic emissions. We use local newspaper closures as an exogenous shock to news coverage and observe a 10% increase in emissions in affected counties, compared to plants owned by the same firm in other counties. Our findings indicate that this increase is not attributable to variations in environmental policies among firms, disparate economic conditions across counties, or heightened production levels at these facilities. Instead the rise in toxic emissions is driven by an elevated amount of toxins emitted per unit of output. We also uncover that the observed effect is more pronounced in areas with a lower newspaper-to-population ratio before the closure and in communities more concerned about environmental issues. Moreover, we find that the spread of online media doesn't mitigate the consequences of newspaper closures on toxic emissions. This research provides causal evidence that local newspapers monitor and reduce firms' harmful environmental practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

L’Équipe is one of the most popular French daily sports newspapers. It is ranked number one by circulation volume and readership scope in sports events. The current study intends to highlight the process of L’Équipe becoming an institutionalized media outlet. The research analyzes the newspaper’s development from the time of its foundation to the present days. The paper dwells on critical stages of the newspaper’s modernization and elaborates on the main sports events that L’Équipe was involved in and supported. These factors influenced the process of the formation of the newspaper as an institutional publication of mass media discourse in the subject area of “sport”. Apart from that, this study aims to analyze the target audience of L’Équipe. Using static data and newspaper content analysis the research differentiates categories of readership classified by age and gender. It is noted that by providing a wide range of sport news topics L’Équipe considers various interests of intended recipients. Online media format emphasizes timeliness as one of the key characteristics that defi ne the newspaper. The further L’Équipe television channel, Internet website and then Internet radio development made it possible to promptly inform the readership about the current events in the sports world. The newspaper online version allows readers to get news, reports and interviews faster. It is therefore proved that the categories of institutionality, targeting and timeliness are significant for sports news written discourse.

Simple Summary: Australian newspaper reporting (1998–2012) about the Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) typically presented the inland, native bird species as a pest, or as a victim, due to the birds' relocation to urban environments along the eastern coast of Australia. Ibis populations have adapted well to their new habitat seeing a steady increase in bird colonies. With this increase has come complaints from human residents about the negative impacts of the birds in the shared environment. As media representation can both reflect and shape public perception and understanding, it is timely for a contemporary investigation into how the ibis is represented in Australian newspapers. Has newspaper representation of the Australian White Ibis changed since 2013? If so, what new narratives have emerged? A content analysis of 68 Australian newspaper items from 2013 to 2024 was conducted with results showing a decrease in pest and victim narratives and the introduction of two new positive narratives-survivor and hero. This finding demonstrates shifts in media representation pointing to the potential for change in public understanding of the ibis and the possibility of improved relations between humans and the native bird species. The Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is an Australian native bird species whose traditional habitat is inland wetlands. Environmental factors have seen the species steadily relocate to the eastern coast of Australia over the last few decades, primarily settling in cities. In 2016, McKiernan and Instone identified that 70% of Australian newspaper reports about the urban ibises from 1998 to 2012 presented the birds as either pests or victims. Since then, the ibis populations have grown, leading to the ibis being voted one of the top ten most commonly seen urban backyard birds in 2019. Media representation both reflects and shapes public perception and understanding, so it is timely for a contemporary investigation into how the ibis is represented in Australian newspapers. This finding evidences changes in media representation pointing to potential changes in public understanding of the ibis and the possibility of improved relations between humans and the native bird species. Homicide-suicide is a tragic event characterized by multiple fatalities within the intimate relationships, familial bonds, and community networks. Our aim was to explore the extent of coverage of homicide-suicide cases in the newspaper reports delivered in Pakistan during the COVID-19 lockdown (March–August 2020). We conducted a quantitative content analysis of news- reports obtained from eight Pakistani newspapers published in English and Urdu languages and daily reviewed by the authors. A total of 50 news-reports have been selected and analyzed, documenting 107 deaths due to homicide-suicide incidents. The majority of these cases involved male perpetrators within family settings, such as parent-child and spousal/married couples, often attributed to factors such us familial discordance and poverty. Negligibly, reasons for homicide-suicides included mental health issues of the perpetrators. Gunshot wounds emerged as the most prevalent method of homicide-suicide. Given the familial backgrounds in most of cases, it is likely that they occurred within the domestic environments. These findings may suggest the need of specific family interventions across the country in order to prevent family discordances or cope with relevant issues within the families, as both may contribute to homicidal and suicidal incidents, either independently or concurrently. This study examines the ways widely circulated U.S. newspapers have articulated the idea of "speciesism" and its associated idea "animal rights" in relation to "racism" to understand how powerful news media helps to shape the public understanding of the interlocking systems of oppression that cuts across the human and the more-than-human world. The archives (1987 to 2023) of three U.S. newspapers - The New York Times, USA Today, and The Washington Post - were analyzed, using qualitative content analysis. The ideas of articulation, symbolic annihilation, erasure, and discursive closure served as the analytical guides for the analysis. The analysis shows that there is gross underrepresentation of speciesism and even far less representation of the relationship between speciesism and racism and between animal rights and anti-racism. When represented, the articulations showed problematic patterns of erasure of those concepts and relationships. The paper ends with the implications of the findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article considers the pivotal organizing role of the revolutionary paper Congress Militant for the Marxist Workers' Tendency of the African National Congress from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, a period characterized by mass popular struggles against apartheid, violence, and political negotiations. Congress Militant was instrumental in shaping the internal life of the Tendency, from being a space of reportage of local struggles and political analyses to contributing to the development of a community of revolutionary cadres who belonged to national and international organizations. It was also the principal public vehicle for the propagation of the Tendency's politics, serving as a tool of intervention in numerous campaigns and in recruitment. As such, the paper offers a window into the history of the changing politics of one socialist organization during the tumultuous years of the early 1990s in South Africa, including its criticisms of the compromises made by the ANC leadership during the negotiations. This study examines the discursive construction of religion in Swedish newspaper articles on funerals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thirty articles from the six most prominent newspapers were analyzed using Multimodal CDA and intersectionality. Most articles deal with religion as an institution, followed by religion as a group and individual religiosity. Religion is constructed in intersection with ethnicity and gender. The CoS is privileged, portraying Lutheran Christians as professionals. Minority religions are positioned as 'the other', something 'problematic' or 'different' from 'Swedish (secular) values' and ways of living. Migrant men and women are portrayed stereotypically. However, alternative narratives are told by well-educated and influential representatives of different minority religions, giving these religions a 'voice'. I argue that increased religious literacy is needed among media workers if the reporting should be based on equality within and between the power categories of gender, ethnicity, and religion. - Abstract
Media convergence is a process in which the media adapts to the audience's digital media usage habits. It is a response to the rapid development of technologies and is affected by multiple factors. A systematic literature review of media convergence is crucial for comprehensively understanding the complex merging of traditional and digital media, identifying research gaps, and evaluating trends that inform both theoretical developments and practical applications. This approach also enhances academic rigor, guiding future research and informing policy decisions in a rapidly evolving media landscape. This study employs a systematic literature review methodology, adhering to the PRISMA 2020 standards for classification and summarization. It comprehensively analyzes over 5,000 academic articles on media convergence sourced from three main databases, namely WoS, Scopus and CSSCI, ultimately selecting 53 articles that meet the inclusion criteria. The findings indicated four main components worthy of future studies of media convergence, namely cultural, content, technology, and economic convergence. Each of these components are discussed to reflect the current trend of media convergence worldwide. These four components should be integrated into theoretical framework of media convergence to refine the rapid changes to the interaction between media and technologies worldwide. From this SLR, future studies on media convergence might explore audience behavior, economic models, content diversity, regulatory challenges, and technological innovations, building on insights from the systematic literature review. In recent years, climate change and unpredictable weather are causing more frequent severe floods in various areas, but little is understood about how regional newspapers shape public reactions to and preparations for natural disasters. This study investigated the framing of flood news by The Borneo Post, an English-language newspaper circulated in Sarawak, Malaysia. The specific aspects examined were: (a) frequency of thematic and episodic framing of flood events and (b) frame dimensions used in articles. Altogether 76 articles (25,676 words) on floods published by The Borneo Post from 1 January to 31 December 2023 were analysed. All articles were in the episodic frame. The main frame dimension was attribution of responsibility (79%), where authorities act as disseminators and narrators of disaster facts. However, the absence of thematic framing of floods lowers attribution of responsibility to authorities to plan long-term solutions to flooding. The economic consequences frame ranked second (14.5%), emphasising losses suffered. Little attention was given to human interest (3.9%) or conflict (1.3%). There was no morality frame, and 1.3% of articles were fact-filled and did not have an obvious frame dimension. The findings suggest that fact-focused flood reporting lacking the humanity element may not move readers to action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TELECOMMUNICATION systems , *SEMIOTICS , *MASS media , *NEWSPAPER publishing , *SURFACE structure - Abstract
Indicators are a form of coding that has an important function in ensuring communication in human life and can rank relationships at a certain level and even set boundaries. Indicators play an active role in reaching the target audience through their carriers and transmitters in the communication system they are connected to. Newspapers, which are part of the mass media, are effective at establishing a connection with the reader and helping the codes gain meaning. The purpose of the narrator is to convey to the target audience a certain idea in the context of the subject of the message and to ensure that the desired opinion has a widespread impact. The fact that newspaper news contains many symbols in the context of the use of pictures, letters, and font size makes a serious contribution to semiotic analysis. In this study, the column titled 'Woman Has No Name', published in Siirt Newspaper on March 7, 2022, was examined with semiotic analysis. In the analysis, after drawing attention to the position of women in the world and in our society, the text was analyzed with its sections in the context of the theme, referent and sign system, and word choices. Thus, the effects of the findings obtained on culture and life, the reflections of these effects on the world of meaning, the narrative language of the newspaper news, and the codes implicit in the text were brought out from the deep structure to the surface structure, and a different perspective on semiotics was presented. Popularized with the term "news desert," the decline of the number of newspapers has cast a gloom over the future of American democracy. However, there has been little research on what factors are related to such phenomena. To fill this gap, we construct a theoretical framework based on previous research relating market conditions to news deserts, and study how news deserts relate to social capital. Our analyses find population, and education have strong negative associations with news deserts and potential journalism divides, where newspapers decrease disproportionately according to the community's African American composition. Age has a weak negative association with news deserts. Furthermore, our analyses reveal that having more newspapers has a positive effect on community social capital in its economic connectedness, cohesiveness, and civic engagement. Consequently, economic connectedness and cohesiveness positively impact the number of newspapers next year, showing evidence of a virtuous circle. This study advances the discussions around the "news desert" a step forward by empirically investigating its social impact on our communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MASS media policy , *COVID-19 pandemic , *PUBLIC opinion , *CORONAVIRUSES , *SOCIAL media - Abstract
There is a known fact that the public depends largely on the media for information. However, such information might not have been perceived rightly as sent by the media. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine the extent to which information on the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic containment policy flows from the government to the public through the pages of newspapers. Aside from examining how these policies were framed, it seeks to also find out if Nigerians perceived the coverage by newspapers as relevant for them to comply with them. Adopting a descriptive methodological approach which systematically differs from most previous studies because substantial studies on the subject matter use qualitative methods. Findings reveal that Newspapers' framing of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public adherence to the government's containment policy and the volume of newspaper coverage of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public perception of the importance of the government containment policy on the disease. The study concluded that even though advancement in technology has given rise to the use of other media such as social media, the efficacy/potency and relevance of the newspaper cannot be brushed aside despite this advancement. It is, however, recommended that further studies should be conducted to examine the challenges faced by press through Key Informant Interview (KII) in the carrying coverage on the COVID-19 pandemic in other to strike balance. OTTOMAN Empire , *NEWSPAPER publishing , *LITERARY movements - Abstract
In the Ottoman Empire, opposition journalism outside the country presented its first examples during the reign of Abdülaziz. Publishing newspapers outside the country reached its peak during the reign of Abdülhamid II due to the repressive political conditions of the period. During these years, pro-Constitution Young Turk groups were organized in centers outside the country. The Young Turks, who turned to press activity to make their political demands known to Istanbul, created an oppositional press and literary movement. The aim of this study is to analyze Abraham Galante's catalog, which is an important document about the newspapers published abroad during the reign of Abdülhamid II. It is very difficult to identify newspapers that opposed the Ottoman court and to have complete access to their collections. The data in Galante's catalog, which he prepared during his years of involvement in the Young Turk movement and his work as a journalist abroad, pioneered studies on the Young Turk press and literature. In this context, Galante's document, which is the first catalog of newspapers published outside the country during the reign of Abdülhamid II, is of great importance. As an Ottoman Jew, Galante's catalog serves the disciplines of journalism, history, politics and literature as a source for research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. You Said Digital First! A Five-Dimensional Definition According to Journalists from Three Swiss Newspapers.

- Abstract
The term digital first is frequently used by newspapers to describe how they go about making digital and print news. Yet the literature does not define the term precisely and has not described implications in terms of making news. Furthermore, we know almost nothing about how journalists themselves understand this jargon and how they view what it entails in terms of the (changes to) underlying practices. This research analyzed the production systems of three different types of French-language Swiss newspapers that label their production systems digital first: a local paper, a legacy paper and a metro-style paper. It interviewed 17 of their newsworkers, 15 of which described the way their newspaper makes news as digital first without being prompted. The full range of properties attributed to digital first emerging from the data reflected five dimensions: temporality, content format, workflow, production mindset and business strategy. These five dimensions were conceptualized by building a digital first matrix, thereby contributing to definitional clarity, while also serving as a useful tool to analyze newspaper production. In practice, production and editing resources seem to determine a newspaper's success in fully implementing more ambitious visions of digital first. Digital first, we argue, constitutes an emerging newsmaking paradigm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) features in global scale assessments of climate mitigation, but with limited exploration of how and where the technology could be deployed. BECCS is unlikely to perform a major role in national strategies whilst key aspects of deployment and public concerns are unaddressed, as happened with fracking. Since public understanding of the technology is limited, there is a crucial role for the news media in facilitating greater public discussion and understanding of BECCS. Here, a news media analysis of both national and regional newspapers explores the ‘storylines’ which frame the public debate on BECCS in the UK, and the coalitions of actors involved in presenting them. Several storylines present a positive framing of BECCS as Necessary and an Opportunity, particularly in regional newspapers of Yorkshire and the Humber where Drax's biomass power station is located. The Anchor for transition storyline describes the regional socio-economic opportunity of Drax's proposed BECCS project. However, this pro-BECCS coalition is undermined by other storylines that frame BECCS as Dangerous and Overhyped. To achieve discursive dominance, facilitating social acceptance and legitimacy for the technology, the positive framing of BECCS will require disarming storylines labelling BECCS as Worse than coal, No silver bullet, an Environmental disaster, and a Distraction. Our results suggest storyline resonance varies according to context, with notable differences between the public discourse at national and regional level; the Anchor for transition storyline resonates in an industrial community facing the socio-economic challenges of decarbonisation.

The article analyses the educational activities of Tatars, the emergence and development of printing and polygraphic production in Turkestan in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The development of printing in the languages of the local Turkic population in Turkestan is associated with the socio-cultural and religious activism of Tatars. The author analyses historical and archival documents, a number of printed publications in the Uzbek language of the specified period and traces the logistics of the formation of printing culture in this region, which was significant for the Russian Empire. The article shows the effects of the modernisation trend among Tatars in the context of the scientific and technological revolution, and its transit through the Russian society to the foreign Turkic peoples of the country. The author describes the activities of Tatar typesetters who brought Muslim fonts for printing to the given region, thereby showing how the provision of a material and technical base stimulated the development of printing for the local Turkic-speaking population. The author demonstrates the development of the printing culture of Turkestan in the late 19th – early 20th centuries through the analysis of various aspects of the activities of such Tatar figures as Shakhimardan Ibragimov, Mukhammad Khasan Chanishev, Shakhingirey Bekkulov, Abdulatif Yaushev, Ali Bektemirov, Ismail Abidov, Arif Klevleyev, Akhmad Donskoy, and Shagid Akhmadiev. Along with that, the author analyses the participation of the Tatar intelligentsia in the development of printing activities and the establishment of printing in the new socio-political conditions that emerged after the revolution of 1917 – already in the Turkestan ASSR, in particular, in the Khorezm and Bukhara People's Soviet Republics.

This paper focuses on the digitization of Punjabi newspapers through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, a comparative analysis was conducted between Google Document AI and Tesseract OCR solutions. Punjabi newspapers, with their complex layouts, non-standard fonts, and linguistic nuances, pose challenges for OCR systems. The study aimed to evaluate the out-of-the-box performance of OCR solutions in accurately extracting text from Punjabi newspaper scans. Utilizing a benchmarking experiment with a dataset comprising Punjabi newspaper segments, the research addressed questions regarding the comparative performance of Google Document AI and Tesseract in handling Punjabi text. The methodology involved image enhancement, layout analysis, and OCR execution, with qualitative and quantitative analyses conducted to assess precision and reliability. While Tesseract demonstrated competitive performance, Google Document AI exhibited superior accuracy, highlighting the potential of server-based OCR solutions for handling diverse document types. The mask RCNN model is used to extract the layout of newspapers using a layout parser. The findings reveal that while Tesseract demonstrates competitive performance, Google Document AI exhibits superior accuracy. We have performed the text extraction on newspaper segments that are extracted from newspaper images. Specifically, Tesseract achieved an accuracy of 97.20% at the word level and 92.48% at the character level, whereas Google API performed better with an accuracy of 98.86% at the word level and 95.62% at the character level. These findings contribute to the advancement of OCR technology in the context of Punjabi newspaper digitization, facilitating broader access to historical Punjabi texts for scholarly research. In April 1921, Albert Curtis Brown, who was to develop a substantial international literary agency, took over as Lawrence’s literary agent in England. His best-known employee was Laurence Pollinger, who by April 1927 had taken over much of the “book side” of Lawrence’s work. However, although royalties from Lawrence’s novels were overall the greater part of his increasing income, particularly after Thomas Seltzer and his wife Adele expanded his sales in the USA, income from periodicals was also important for a writer such as Lawrence who wrote so much short fiction. The payments received were significant relative to the length of what was published, so income was easier to come by. With assistance from Curtis Brown’s Magazine Department manager, Nancy Pearn, who worked with Lawrence from 1924 on developing in his home country of England, his income from periodicals became substantial too. This essay will examine the history of Lawrence’s developing income from periodicals in England (not just from the shorter fiction published in it, but also from his shorter non-fiction, in particular the results of his later interest in journalism, sometimes specifically tailored to readers in his homeland), the extent of Nancy Pearn’s role in that, and her relationship with Lawrence. Not infrequently, Lawrence had difficulties with his publishers and literary agents, but his relationship with her was an unusually good one, one of mutual respect, which as this first detailed study will show is reflected in their correspondence. For example, he recommended her to Catherine Carswell, describing her as a “quite golden” “magazine girl” (5L 459). Almost uniquely for someone in her position, he also inscribed a copy of one of his books to her, the Secker first English edition of Sea and Sardinia (1921).

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the role of media (including cinema) on the CO2 emission levels of The United States of America (USA). Employing three co-integration methods, namely Canonical Co-Integrating Regression (CCR), Dynamic Least Squares (DOLS), and Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS), within the framework of Environmental Kuznet Curves (EKC) theory, we unravel the impact of media coverage on the USA’s carbon footprint. Utilizing Climate Policy Uncertainty index (CPU), extracted from prominent USA newspapers as a main concern, the analysis reveals a noteworthy outcome indicating media coverage pertaining to environmental issues, pollution, and climate changes emerges as a contributing factor in the reduction of CO2 emissions. The study also uses income per capita, renewable energy consumption and foreign direct investment as additional metrics of air pollution. The findings not only shed light on the influential role of media in shaping environmental outcomes but also offer valuable insights to policy makers and governors.
