Intensification of swine production can predispose pigs to chronic stress, with adverse effects on the neuroendocrine and immune systems that can lead to health problems, poor welfare, and reduced production performance. Consequently, there is an interest in developing tools to prevent or eliminate chronic stress. Music is widely used as a therapeutic strategy for stress management in humans and may have similar benefits in non-human animals. This study evaluated the effects of a music-based auditory enrichment program in pigs from a multidimensional perspective by assessing psychophysiological responses. Two experimental groups of 20 pigs each were selected for the study: one enriched, exposed to a program of functional veterinary music designed for pigs, and a control group without auditory stimulation. Qualitative behavior assessment (QBA) and skin lesions indicative of agonistic behavior were used to evaluate the psychological determinants underlying the observed behaviors. Physiological assessment included hemograms, with the determination of the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio and daily measurements of cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase levels. The results demonstrated a positive effect of a music-based auditory program on psychophysiological responses. Therefore, this strategy developed for environmental enrichment may be beneficial in reducing stress and contributing to the welfare and health of pigs under production conditions. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the central nervous system, usually diagnosed during the reproductive period. Both MS and its commonly used animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), exhibit sex-specific features regarding disease progression and disturbances in the neuroendocrine and endocrine systems. This study investigates the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis response of male and female Dark Agouti rats during EAE. At the onset of EAE, Crh expression in the hypothalamus of both sexes is decreased, while males show reduced plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone levels. Adrenal gland activity is increased during EAE in both males and females, as evidenced by enlarged adrenal glands and increased StAR gene and protein expression. However, only male rats show increased serum and adrenal corticosterone levels, and an increased volume of the adrenal cortex. Adrenal 3β-HSD protein and progesterone levels are elevated in males only. Serum progesterone levels of male rats are also increased, although testicular progesterone levels are decreased during the disease, implying that the adrenal gland is the source of elevated serum progesterone levels in males. In all vertebrates, reproductive strategies are achieved by modulation of the neuroendocrine system in a similar manner and with minor variations among the different classes. Most of the available information on amphibian testicular cycles derive from anurans, and among these, water frogs have been extensively studied in terms of reproductive mechanisms and sex steroid correlation. Adiponectin (AdipoQ) and its receptors—AdipoR1 and AdipoR2—are essential for most of the normal testicular and sperm functions. In this study, the identification of AdipoQ and its two receptors was carried out by immunohistochemistry in the testis of adult males of Pelophylax bergeri. The AdipoQ system was observed in the frog spermatogenic cysts, in both germinal and Sertoli cells, as well as in the rete testis. AdipoQ and AdipoR1 were localized in germ-line cells, from spermatogonia to round spermatids, while AdipoR2 was detected in the elongated spermatids, spermatozoa, and Sertoli cells. AdipoR1 was also observed in the intratesticular canals of the rete testis. This preliminary study shows the AdipoQ system's presence in the anurans' testis. The role of the gut microbiota in the pathophysiology of depression has been explored in numerous studies, which have confirmed that the baseline gut microbial profiles of patients with depression differ from those of healthy individuals. The gut microbiome affects metabolic activity in the immune and central nervous systems and regulates intestinal ecology through the neuroendocrine system. Additionally, baseline changes in the gut microbiota differed among patients with depression who demonstrated varying treatment response. Currently, probiotics are an emerging treatment for depression; however, the efficacy of modulating the gut microbiota in the treatment of depression remains uncertain. Additionally, the mechanisms by which changes in the gut microbiota affect treatment response in patients with depression remain unclear. In this review, we aimed to summarize the differences in the baseline gut microbiota between the remission and non-remission groups after antidepressant therapy. Additionally, we summarized the possible mechanisms that may contribute to antidepressant resistance through the effects of the gut microbiome on the immune and nervous systems, various enzymes, bioaccumulation, and blood-brain barrier, and provide a basis for treating depression by targeting the gut microbiota. The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, is a paradigmatic photoperiodic species that exhibits a remarkable annual life cycle, which is tightly coupled to the seasonal changes in day length. During spring and summer, characterised by longer days, aphid populations consist exclusively of viviparous females that reproduce parthenogenetically. When autumn comes and the days shorten, aphids switch their reproductive mode and generate males and oviparous sexual females, which mate and produce cold-resistant eggs that overwinter and survive the unfavourable season. While the photoperiodic responses have been well described, the nature of the timing mechanisms which underlie day length discrimination are still not completely understood. Experiments from the 1960's suggested that aphids rely on an 'hourglass' clock measuring the elapsed time during the dark night by accumulating a biochemical factor, which reaches a critical threshold at a certain night length and triggers the switch in reproduction mode. However, the photoperiodic responses of aphids can also be attributed to a strongly dampened circadian clock. Recent studies have uncovered the molecular components and the location of the circadian clock in the brain of the pea aphid and revealed that it is well connected to the neurohormonal system controlling aphid reproduction. We provide an overview of the putative mechanisms of photoperiodic control in aphids, from the photoreceptors involved in this process to the circadian clock and the neuroendocrine system. Adaptation of physiology and behavior to seasonal changes in the environment are for many organisms essential for survival. Most of our knowledge about the underlying mechanisms comes from research on photoperiodic regulation of reproduction in plants, insects and mammals. However, even humans, who mostly live in environments with minimal seasonal influences, show annual rhythms in physiology (e.g., immune activity, brain function), behavior (e.g., sleep–wake cycles) and disease prevalence (e.g., infectious diseases). As seasonal variations in environmental conditions may be drastically altered due to climate change, the understanding of the mechanisms underlying seasonal adaptation of physiology and behavior becomes even more relevant. While many species have developed specific solutions for dedicated tasks of photoperiodic regulation, we find a number of common principles and mechanisms when comparing insect and mammalian systems: (1) the circadian system contributes to photoperiodic regulation; (2) similar signaling molecules (VIP and PDF) are used for transferring information from the circadian system to the neuroendocrine system controlling the photoperiodic response; (3) the hormone melatonin participates in seasonal adaptation in insects as well as mammals; and (4) changes in photoperiod affect neurotransmitter function in both animal groups. The few examples of overlap elaborated in this perspective article, as well as the discussion on relevance for humans, should be seen as encouragement to unravel the machinery of seasonal adaptation in a multitude of organisms. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mood disorder that has become a global health emergency according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It affects 280 million people worldwide and is a leading cause of disability and financial loss. Patients with MDD present immunoendocrine alterations like cortisol resistance and inflammation, which are associated with alterations in neurotransmitter metabolism. There are currently numerous therapeutic options for patients with MDD; however, some studies suggest a high rate of therapeutic failure. There are multiple hypotheses explaining the pathophysiological mechanisms of MDD, in which several systems are involved, including the neuroendocrine and immune systems. In recent years, inflammation has become an important target for the development of new therapeutic options. Extracellular monomeric ubiquitin (emUb) is a molecule that has been shown to have immunomodulatory properties through several mechanisms including cholinergic modulation and the generation of regulatory T cells. In this perspective article, we highlight the influence of the inflammatory response in MDD. The hypothalamic–pituitary axis is central to the functioning of the neuroendocrine system and essential for regulating physiological and behavioral homeostasis and coordinating fundamental body functions. The expanding line of evidence shows the indispensable role of the microRNA pathway in regulating the gene expression profile in the developing and adult hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Experiments provoking a depletion of miRNA maturation in the context of the hypothalamic–pituitary axis brought into focus a prominent involvement of miRNAs in neuroendocrine functions. There are also a few individual miRNAs and miRNA families that have been studied in depth revealing their crucial role in mediating the regulation of fundamental processes such as temporal precision of puberty timing, hormone production, fertility and reproduction capacity, and energy balance. Among these miRNAs, miR‐7 was shown to be hypothalamus‐enriched and the top one highly expressed in the pituitary gland, where it has a profound impact on gene expression regulation. Here, we review miRNA profiles, knockout phenotypes, and miRNA interaction (targets) in the hypothalamic–pituitary axis that advance our understanding of the roles of miRNAs in mammalian neurosecretion and related physiology. Introduction: Axons of magnocellular neurosecretory cells project from the hypothalamus to the posterior lobe (PL) of the pituitary. In the PL, a wide perivascular space exists between the outer basement membrane (BM), where nerve axons terminate, and the inner BM lining the fenestrated capillaries. Hypothalamic axon terminals and outer BMs in the PL form neurovascular junctions. We previously had found that collagen XIII is strongly localized in the outer BMs. In this study, we investigated the role of collagen XIII in the PL of rat pituitaries. Methods: We first studied the expression of Col13a1, the gene encoding the α1 chains of collagen XIII, in rat pituitaries via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization. We observed the distribution of COL13A1 in the rat pituitary using immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy. We examined the expression of Col13a1 and the distribution of COL13A1 during the development of the pituitary. In addition, we examined the effects of water deprivation and arginine vasopressin (AVP) signaling on the expression of Col13a1 in the PL. Results:Col13a1 was expressed in NG2-positive pericytes, and COL13A1 signals were localized in the outer BM of the PL. The expression of Col13a1 was increased by water deprivation and was regulated via the AVP/AVPR1A/Gαq/11 cascade in pericytes of the PL. Conclusion: These results suggest that pericytes surrounding fenestrated capillaries in the PL secrete COL13A1 and are involved in the construction of neurovascular junctions. Emotion suppression may be linked to poor health outcomes through elevated stress-related physiology. The current meta-analyses investigate the magnitude of the association between suppression and physiological responses to active psychological stress tasks administered in the laboratory. Relevant articles were identified through Medline, PsychINFO, PubMed, and ProQuest. Studies were eligible if they (a) used a sample of healthy, human subjects; (b) assessed physiology during a resting baseline and active psychological stress task; and (c) measured self-report or experimentally manipulated suppression. Twenty-four studies were identified and grouped within two separate random effects meta-analyses based on study methodology, namely, manipulated suppression (k = 12) and/or self-report (k = 14). Experimentally manipulated suppression was associated with greater physiological stress reactivity compared to controls (Hg = 0.20, 95% CI [0.08, 0.33]), primarily driven by cardiac, hemodynamic, and neuroendocrine parameters. Self-report trait suppression was not associated with overall physiological stress reactivity but was associated with greater neuroendocrine reactivity (r = 0.08, 95% CI [0.01, 0.14]). Significant moderator variables were identified (i.e., type/duration of stress task, nature of control instructions, type of physiology, and gender). This review suggests that suppression may exacerbate stress-induced physiological arousal; however, this may differ based upon the chosen methodological assessment of suppression. Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are highly heterogeneous and potentially malignant tumors arising from secretory cells of the neuroendocrine system. Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) are the most common subtype of NENs. Historically, GEP-NENs have been regarded as infrequent and slow-growing malignancies; however, recent data have demonstrated that the worldwide prevalence and incidence of GEP-NENs have increased exponentially over the last three decades. In addition, an increasing number of studies have proven that GEP-NENs result in a limited life expectancy. These findings suggested that the natural biology of GEP-NENs is more aggressive than commonly assumed. Therefore, there is an urgent need for advanced researches focusing on the diagnosis and management of patients with GEP-NENs. In this review, we have summarized the limitations and recent advancements in our comprehension of the epidemiology, clinical presentations, pathology, molecular biology, diagnosis, and treatment of GEP-NETs to identify factors contributing to delays in diagnosis and timely treatment of these patients. Numerous research studies have shown that moderate physical exercise exerts positive effects on gastrointestinal tract health and increases the variety and relative number of beneficial microorganisms in the intestinal microbiota. Increasingly, studies have shown that the gut microbiota is critical for energy metabolism, immunological response, oxidative stress, skeletal muscle metabolism, and the regulation of the neuroendocrine system, which are significant for the physiological function of exercise. Dietary modulation targeting the gut microbiota is an effective prescription for improving exercise performance and alleviating exercise fatigue. This article discusses the connection between exercise and the makeup of the gut microbiota, as well as the detrimental effects of excessive exercise on gut health. Herein, we elaborate on the possible mechanism of the gut microbiota in improving exercise performance, which involves enhancing skeletal muscle function, reducing oxidative stress, and regulating the neuroendocrine system. The effects of dietary nutrition strategies and probiotic supplementation on exercise from the perspective of the gut microbiota are also discussed in this paper. A deeper understanding of the potential mechanism by which the gut microbiota exerts positive effects on exercise and dietary nutrition recommendations targeting the gut microbiota is significant for improving exercise performance. Background: Esophageal neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are extremely rare. Published information on their clinical features, pathological findings, and prognosis is lacking. The optimal treatment for esophageal NECs has not yet been determined because they appear extremely malignant histologically and have a poor prognosis. We here report on a patient with an esophageal NEC who was successfully treated with multidisciplinary therapies. Case presentation: The patient, a 47-year-old man, was admitted to our hospital with dysphagia and weight loss and an ECOG performance status of 3–4. Upper endoscopy showed a large circumferential neoplasm at the esophagogastric junction. Computed tomography showed lymph node metastases around the left gastric artery. Echocardiography raised a suspicion of invasion of the left atrium. Histopathological examination of biopsy tissue revealed diffuse proliferation of small atypical cells resembling naked nuclei with extensive necrosis and degeneration. The cells showed positive staining for CD56, chromogranin A, and synaptophysin on immunohistochemical analysis. Ki67 was positive in over 90% of cells. He was diagnosed with an esophageal NEC that had infiltrated the left atrium; his cancer was therefore inoperable. Because of his poor overall condition, palliative radiotherapy (30 Gy in 15 fractions) was administered, accompanied by nutritional management. This was followed by four courses of chemotherapy with carboplatin plus etoposide, after which the primary tumor and locoregional lymph node metastases were found to have shrunk. Thoracoscopic- and laparoscopic-assisted McKeown esophagectomy were performed. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was NEC pT3pN0M0 Stage II. The patient had a good postoperative course and received two courses of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy (carboplatin plus etoposide). Currently, 3 years after commencing treatment, there is no evidence of recurrence. Conclusions: As mentioned above, there is no established treatment regime for esophageal NEC, and the benefits of conversion surgery are unknown. Our patient achieved long-term recurrence-free survival after radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery for an esophageal NEC with left atrial invasion and multiple lymph node metastases. L'obésité de l'enfant et de l'adolescent est une pathologie dont la compréhension a profondément évolué depuis quelques années grâce à l'identification des formes génétiques et à un accroissement exponentiel des connaissances en biologie. Le tissu adipeux est un organe endocrine en dialogue permanent avec les autres organes dont les centres de régulation de l'appétit cérébraux et la signalisation neuroendocrine du tube digestif. Face à un enfant ou un adolescent développant une obésité, une analyse rigoureuse de la dynamique de sa pathologie, des éventuelles anomalies et complications cliniques associées est requise. La coopération avec les centres de référence pédiatriques et de recherche en nutrigénomique permettant d'identifier les mutations associées permet de poser dans des cas encore rares mais probablement sous diagnostiqués l'indication de traitement spécifiques efficaces. Récemment un essai randomisé a montré qu'un analogue du Glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP1-R), molécule clé de régulation de l'appétit d'origine intestinale, avait un effet bénéfique majeur dans des obésités polygéniques. Des études sont encore nécessaires pour s'assurer des résultats à long terme et de l'absence de toxicité mais les résultats acquis font d'ores et déjà rediscuter la place de la chirurgie bariatrique. Si la prévention doit rester une priorité, de nombreuses autres molécules et d'autres voies thérapeutiques sont en cours d'investigation dans la plus fréquente des maladies métaboliques et chroniques de l'enfance. Child and adolescent obesity is definitely a pathology the understanding of which has faced dramatic changes in recent years thanks to the identification of the genetic background of some cases and an amazing increase in the knowledge of its biological background. The adipose tissue is an endocrine organ in permanent communication with other ones, including the appetite regulation centres of the brain and the neuroendocrine system of the digestive tract. A precise analysis of the trajectory of weight gain and its associated manifestations such as abnormal physical or developmental features and complications is mandatory while facing a child or adolescent with obesity. A close cooperation with reference centres for childhood obesity and nutrigenomics research units leading to the diagnosis of genetic forms, likely to be underdiagnosed, may allow the use of targeted and efficient drug treatment. A recent double-blind study has shown that a Glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP1) analogue, a key contributor of appetite regulation from intestinal origin, has a major beneficial impact on adolescents with obesity of polygenic origin. Further studies are still required to ensure the long-term effect and the lack of side effects of such a treatment. However, such results already challenge the indication of bariatric surgery. Introduction: Previous studies have shown that fetal hypoxia predisposes individuals to develop addictive disorders in adulthood. However, the specific impact of maternal stress, mediated through glucocorticoids and often coexisting with fetal hypoxia, is not yet fully comprehended. Methods: To delineate the potential effects of these pathological factors, we designed models of prenatal severe hypoxia (PSH) in conjunction with maternal stress and prenatal intrauterine ischemia (PII). We assessed the suitability of these models for our research objectives by measuring HIF1α levels and evaluating the glucocorticoid neuroendocrine system. To ascertain nicotine dependence, we employed the conditioned place aversion test and the startle response test. To identify the key factor implicated in nicotine addiction associated with PSH, we employed techniques such as Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and correlational analysis between chrna7 and nr3c1 genes across different brain structures. Results: In adult rats exposed to PSH and PII, we observed increased levels of HIF1α in the hippocampus (HPC). However, the PSH group alone exhibited reduced glucocorticoid receptor levels and disturbed circadian glucocorticoid rhythms. Additionally, they displayed signs of nicotine addiction in the conditioned place aversion and startle response tests. We also observed elevated levels of phosphorylated DARPP-32 protein in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) indicated compromised glutamatergic efferent signaling. Furthermore, there was reduced expression of α7 nAChR, which modulates glutamate release, in the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) and HPC. Correlation analysis revealed strong associations between chrna7 and nr3c1 expression in both brain structures. Conclusion: Perturbations in the glucocorticoid neuroendocrine system and glucocorticoid-dependent gene expression of chrna7 associated with maternal stress response to hypoxia in prenatal period favor the development of nicotine addiction in adulthood. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may mimic the endogenous neuroendocrine and endocrine messengers and interfere with developmental, reproductive, immune, metabolic and other physiological functions. Modulation of basal metabolic rate, energy metabolism, food intake and engorgement by endocrine disruptors may lead to loss of metabolic equilibrium. EDC-induced loss of metabolic homeostasis and obesity gave rise to the concept of metabolic-disrupting chemicals (MDC) and environmental obesogens. Elevated oxidative stress, alterations in the circadian clock, and energy-sensing homeostasis are some of the major pathophysiological conditions implicated in promoting metabolic disruption. Reportedly, fish are the most vulnerable candidate due to their direct exposure to metabolic disruptors in aquatic habitats. Though limited, studies conducted using piscine models have helped to identify MDCs in the aquatic environment. Notably, the molecular mechanisms through which MDCs can negatively influence the metabolism of hormones, epigenetic alteration, gut dysbiosis, and changes in endocrine and metabolic receptor expression and functions have recently gained considerable attention. In this review, we provide an update on the impact of MDCs on the initiators, cellular mediators, and hormone receptors related to the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis, with particular emphasis on fish models. The main neuroendocrine pathways of induction of reproductive behavior in fish are elucidated. 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-DHP), an oocyte maturation-inducing hormone, was found to act as a pheromone to induce male reproductive behavior. 17α, 20β-DHP-sulfate (17,20β-DHP-S), a derivative of 17,20β-DHP, was also identified as a later-acting pheromone. In addition, prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α), which is synthesized during female ovulation, has been shown to also act as a pheromone, inducing the final ovipositioninducing behavior to make fertilization successful. It appears that these molecular events are initiated by stimuli from the brain. Numerous neuropeptides have been discovered that promote the initiation of reproductive behavior. Recently, with the proliferation of genome editing technology, a detailed analysis of the molecules involved in these pathways is underway. Analysis of gene knockout in zebrafish and medaka is actively underway. On the other hand, many research reports have shown that the induction pathways of male reproductive behavior are adversely affected by chemical substances. Knowledge of the adverse effects of chemical substances is not only useful as information to prevent their mixing from the viewpoint of protecting the natural environment and as a point of caution in fish farming, but also provides clues for elucidating the pathways of reproductive behavior induction. The elucidation of the pathways of reproductive behavior induction is also important from the point of view of breeding technology for fish farming and biodiversity conservation. In this review, we summarize recent research on the pathways of male reproductive behavior induction in fish and the possibility of developing new aquaculture techniques depending on the results. This review highlights the recent developments regarding neuroendocrine mechanisms controlling teleost reproduction. In teleosts, the pituitary gland receives major neuronal innervations from Gnrh neurons as well as minor innervations from small population of neurons that will secrete neurotransmitters and/or neuropeptides. The diversity of Kiss/Kissr system in various teleost species and their actions in the context of HPG axis and reproduction has been extensively covered. In teleost model systems, zebrafish and medaka, mutant lines for key components of the HPG axis have been generated through targeted mutagenesis but surprisingly most of the mutants developed normally without major defects in reproduction; these mutant phenotypes are described. In the last decade, complex role of diverse neuropeptides in teleost reproduction is being revealed. A brief overview about the reproductive functions of neuropeptides is presented. Reproduction is one of the most crucial physiological processes for the continuation of the generation of any species. Teleost are one of the most divergent aquatic species. The reproductive neuro-endocrine regulatory studies are limited to only few species. Neuroendocrine regulation is a finely tuned complex mechanistic pathways, involving mainly hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad (HPG) axis. Within the HPG axis, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) modulates the synthesis and release of pituitary gonadotropins, which act on the gonads to stimulate steroidogenesis and gametogenesis. Very recently, several novel neuropeptides, associated with reproductive regulation, have been identified. Spexin (SPX), a novel neuropeptide coevolved with the galanin/kisspeptin family, has been identified as a regulator of the species-specific reproductive processes in teleost. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is another novel member of the secretin-glucagon peptide family that functions as a hypophysiotropic factor involved in regulating pituitary hormone secretion in fish. These two emerging neuropeptides have pleiotropic functions, but information regarding their exact roles in fish reproduction is very limited. Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is a commercially important fish species in Asia. Understanding factors like photoperiod, temperature, and lunar cycles is crucial for successful aquaculture and managing its reproduction. Melatonin and dopamine (DA) are essential for regulating reproduction in vertebrates, including fish. This study investigated the effects of melatonin and DA on the reproductive system of mature male Japanese eels to better understand reproductive regulation in fish. To clarify the effects of these hormones on sexual maturation in eels, a critical stage in the reproductive process, sexual maturation was induced by injecting human chorionic gonadotropin, which stimulates the production of sex hormones. To check the effect of melatonin and DA on sexual maturation, DA, melatonin, and DA + domperidone were intraperitoneally injected into fish from each group (six per treatment) at a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight. The fish were then examined using quantitative RT‐PCR by comparing the messenger RNA level of reproduction‐related genes (gonadotropin releasing hormone 1; gnrh1, gonadotropin releasing hormone 2; gnrh2, follicle stimulating hormone; fshβ, luteinizing hormone; lhβ and DA receptor 2b; d2b), involved in the gonadotropic axis in eels, to those that received a control injection. The results indicate significant differences in the expression levels of gnrh1, gnrh2 and d2b in the brain and d2b, fshβ, lhβ in the pituitary at different stages of sexual maturation. Melatonin appears to enhance the production of sex gonadotropins, whereas DA inhibits them. These findings suggest an interaction between melatonin and DA in regulating reproduction in Japanese eels. Introduction: The plasticity of the nervous system plays a crucial role in shaping adaptive neural circuits and corresponding animal behaviors. Understanding the mechanisms underlying neural plasticity during development and its implications for animal adaptation constitutes an intriguing area of research. Sea urchin larvae offer a fascinating subject for investigation due to their remarkable evolutionary and ecological diversity, as well as their diverse developmental forms and behavioral patterns. Materials and methods: We conducted immunochemical and histochemical analyses of serotonin-containing (5-HT-neurons) and dopamine-containing (DA-positive) neurons to study their developmental dynamics in two sea urchin species: Mesocentrotus nudus and Paracentrotus lividus. Our approach involved detailed visualization of 5-HT- and DA-positive neurons at gastrula-pluteus stages, coupled with behavioral assays to assess larval upward and downward swimming in the water column, with a focus on correlating cell numbers with larval swimming ability. Results: The study reveals a heterochronic polymorphism in the appearance of post-oral DA-positive neuroendocrine cells and confirms the stable differentiation pattern of apical 5-HT neurons in larvae of both species. Notably, larvae of the same age exhibit a two-to four-fold difference in DA neurons. An increased number of DA neurons and application of dopamine positively correlate with larval downward swimming, whereas 5-HT-neurons and serotonin application induce upward swimming. The ratio of 5-HT/DA neurons determines the stage-dependent vertical distribution of larvae within the water column. Consequently, larvae from the same generation with a higher number of DA-positive neurons tend to remain at the bottom compared to those with fewer DA-positive neurons. Discussion: The proportion of 5-HT and DA neurons within larvae of the same age underlies the different potentials of individuals for upward and downward swimming. A proposed model illustrates how coordination in humoral regulation, based on heterochrony in DA-positive neuroendocrine cell differentiation, influences larval behavior, mitigates competition between siblings, and ensures optimal population expansion. Long-term intake of procyanidins has been suggested to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and sensory function decline associated with aging. However, most of the ingested procyanidins are not absorbed and are excreted in the feces, so the mechanism of their beneficial impact is unknown. Procyanidins are the components of astringency in plant foods and their stimulation appears to be directly transmitted to the central nervous system via sensory nerves. Recent attention has been focused on the taste receptors expressed in the extra-oral gastrointestinal tract may regulate homeostasis via the neuroendocrine system. Auricular acupuncture (AA) is becoming increasingly common in primary care clinics, emergency departments and peri-operatively for pain relief. Over the last decade, since the last comprehensive reviews were published, the literature has expanded. In this scoping review, we seek to document the efficacy of AA in treating both acute and chronic pain, describe the mechanism of action of AA in treating pain, and discuss how AA has been integrated into Western medicine to date. The authors performed a MEDLINE search inclusive of articles from 1966 to June 2023 including articles written in English identifying literature. We included human studies when more than 3 patients were included. Three hundred and fourteen unique articles were identified and 152 were selected by title screen. After abstract review, 117 were chosen for full-text review. Following full-text review, 33 articles were excluded and 21 added from references, totaling 105 articles included in our scoping review. AA reduces pain severity in patients with both acute and chronic pain. The best studies in the acute settings have occurred in the peri-operative setting where sham AA is employed, multiple sessions of AA are given, and medication dosing is carefully monitored. In these cases, AA reduced pain and post-operative medications. In patients with chronic pain, multiple sessions of AA resulted not only in pain relief but also in improvements in function and disability. Literature suggests that AA works through multiple mechanisms with the most compelling data coupled to the autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine system. Curriculums designed to teach AA and aid in implementation have been published. AA is an accessible, effective means of pain relief. AA is relatively straightforward to learn, and protocols and curriculums exist to teach healthcare professionals this valuable skill. Overcoming implementation barriers, including patient education, are essential next steps. This review was written to analyze the current research on an increasingly popular pain relief treatment, auricular acupuncture. Auricular acupuncture has been an effective method of pain relief for patients with short-term pain. People who experienced pain after surgery and received auricular acupuncture experienced a decrease in pain and pain medications. Patients with chronic pain who underwent auricular acupuncture experienced pain relief and an increase in their functional abilities. Auricular acupuncture is thought to affect the body's autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine system as it creates its source of pain relief for the body. Auricular acupuncture is increasingly popular in the education of healthcare workers and clinical practice. Research shows auricular acupuncture is an effective, easy, and less expensive method of pain relief, whose growth in pain management use may benefit from further education, especially for patients. The bidirectional relationship between the gut microbiota and the nervous system is known as the microbiota–gut–brain axis (MGBA). The MGBA controls the complex interactions between the brain, the enteric nervous system, the gut-associated immune system, and the enteric neuroendocrine systems, regulating key physiological functions such as the immune response, sleep, emotions and mood, food intake, and intestinal functions. Psychobiotics are considered tools with the potential to modulate the MGBA through preventive, adjunctive, or curative approaches, but their specific mechanisms of action on many aspects of health are yet to be characterized. This narrative review and perspectives article highlights the key paradigms needing attention as the scope of potential probiotics applications in human health increases, with a growing body of evidence supporting their systemic beneficial effects. However, there are many limitations to overcome before establishing the extent to which we can incorporate probiotics in the management of neuropsychiatric disorders. This article explores the relationship between psychological stress and vitiligo, a skin condition characterized by the destruction of melanocytes. The authors propose that psychological stress can influence melanocyte destruction through pathways involving cytokines and neuropeptides. They provide evidence from laboratory and clinical studies, including animal studies that show a link between stress and reduced pigmentation. The authors suggest that psychological stress may induce oxidative stress, making melanocytes susceptible to attack by immune cells. They also discuss the role of neuropeptides released in response to stress in damaging melanocytes. Early-life stress is associated with a high prevalence of mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety or depressive behavior, which constitute major public health problems. In the early stages of brain development after birth, events such as synaptogenesis, neuron maturation, and glial differentiation occur in a highly orchestrated manner, and external stress can cause adverse long-term effects throughout life. Our body utilizes multifaceted mechanisms, including neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter signaling pathways, to appropriately process external stress. Newborn individuals first exposed to early-life stress deploy neurogenesis as a stress-defense mechanism; however, in adulthood, early-life stress induces apoptosis of mature neurons, activation of immune responses, and reduction of neurotrophic factors, leading to anxiety, depression, and cognitive and memory dysfunction. This process involves the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and neurotransmitters secreted by the central nervous system, including norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. The rodent early-life stress model is generally used to experimentally assess the effects of stress during neurodevelopment. This paper reviews the use of the early-life stress model and stress response mechanisms of the body and discusses the experimental results regarding how early-life stress mediates stress-related pathways at a high vulnerability of psychiatric disorder in adulthood.

Immune nutrition is currently used to enhance fish health by incorporating functional ingredients into aquafeeds. This study aimed to investigate the connections between tryptophan nutrition and the network that regulates the communication pathways between neuroendocrine and immune systems in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). When tryptophan was supplemented in the diet of unstressed fish, it induced changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal axis response to stress. Tryptophan-mediated effects were observed in the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines and glucocorticoid receptors. Tryptophan supplementation decreased pro-opiomelanocortin b-like levels, that are related with adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol secretion. When stressed fish fed a tryptophan-supplemented diet were subjected to an inflammatory stimulus, plasma cortisol levels decreased and the expression of genes involved in the neuroendocrine response was altered. In recent years, the expanding roles of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in various aspects of reproductive health have attracted significant attention. Initially recognized for its classical role in male sexual differentiation, AMH is produced postnatally by the Sertoli cells in the male testes and by the granulosa cells in the female ovaries. Traditionally, it was believed to primarily influence gonadal development and function. However, research over the last decade has unveiled novel actions of AMH beyond the gonads, specifically all along the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis. This review will focus on the emerging roles of AMH within the hypothalamus and discusses its potential implications in reproductive physiology. Additionally, recent preclinical and clinical studies have suggested that elevated levels of AMH may disrupt the hypothalamic network regulating reproduction, which could contribute to the central pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome. These findings underscore the intricate interplay between AMH and the neuroendocrine system, offering new avenues for understanding the mechanisms underlying fertility and reproductive disorders. Simple Summary: Cancer-related fatigue is a prevalent symptom, with a significant impact on the daily lives of those affected. While physical exercise has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the intensity and duration of fatigue, the literature still lacks sufficient evidence on the physiological mechanisms explaining this impact. This conceptual review aimed to provide an overview of the evidence regarding the effect of acute exercise on peripheral and neuronal inflammation, immune function, and the neuroendocrine system in the context of cancer. We aim to integrate these pathways into a conceptual model that can serve as a starting point for further research into the physiological mechanisms linking exercise and cancer-related fatigue. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and persistent issue affecting cancer patients, with a broad impact on their quality of life even years after treatment completion. The precise mechanisms underlying CRF remain elusive, yet its multifaceted nature involves emotional, physical, and cognitive dimensions. The absence of effective medical treatments has prompted researchers to explore integrative models for potential insights. Notably, physical exercise emerges as a promising strategy for managing CRF and related symptoms, as studies showed a reduction in CRF ranging from 19% to 40%. Current recommendations highlight aerobic training at moderate intensity as beneficial, although questions about a dose–response relationship and the importance of exercise intensity persist. Despite the positive impact of exercise on CRF, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This review aims to provide a theoretical model explaining how aerobic exercise may alleviate CRF. Focusing on acute exercise effects, this review delves into the potential influence on peripheral and neural inflammation, immune function dysregulation, and neuroendocrine system disruptions. Traumatic brain injury is often accompanied by defects in hormone levels, caused by either peripheral gland dysfunctions or by an insufficient central stimulation of hormone production. The epidemiology of endocrinological defects after traumatic brain injury is quite well described, but the consequences of hormone defects are largely unknown, especially in paediatric patients undergoing neurological rehabilitation. Only one previous study reported on a cohort of 20 children with traumatic brain injury and found a low incidence of hormone defects and a correlation between some hormone levels and neurological recovery. In this study, we performed a retrospective chart review on patients affected by severe subacute traumatic brain injury. Their levels of cortisol, ACTH, IGF-1, TSH, free T4, free T3, and prolactin were collected and compared with reference ranges; we then used regression models to highlight any correlation among them and with clinical variables; last, we probed with regression models whether hormone levels could have any correlation with clinical and rehabilitation outcomes. We found eligible data from the records of 52 paediatric patients with markedly severe traumatic brain injury, as shown by an average GCS of 4.7; their age was 10.3 years, on average. The key results of our study are that 32% patients had low IGF-1 levels and in multiple regression models, IGF-1 levels were correlated with neurological recovery, indicating a possible role as a biomarker. Moreover, 69% of patients had high prolactin levels, possibly due to physical pain and high stress levels. This study is limited by the variable timing of the IGF-1 sampling, between 1 and 2 months after injury. Further studies are required to confirm our exploratory findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder among females of reproductive age with heterogeneous prevalence. It is well known that female reproductive competence depends on the dynamic regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis; therefore, disruption of this highly regulated system leads to fertility problems. Among disruptors, both oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to an increased LH-FSH ratio and a consequent hyperandrogenism. Shifts in this bidirectional interplay between the neuroendocrine system and oxidative/inflammatory homeostasis result in the accumulation of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and inflammatory markers as well as alterations in antioxidant defense mechanisms. Evidence shows that lifestyle changes, including regular physical exercise, are recognized as the most effective first-line management to reduce the severity of PCOS symptoms. The aim of our narrative review is to provide insights into the mechanisms and target factors of PCOS-related hormonal changes, oxidative/antioxidant homeostasis, and inflammation, and to discuss the effects of exercise, which takes into account various factors, in relation to PCOS. A better understanding of the PCOS-associated hormonal changes, oxidative and inflammatory circuits, as well as exercise-induced mechanisms of action on those targets may improve the quality of life of women with PCOS. Background: Many studies have investigated the efficacy of acupuncture in treating depression, but the mechanism of acupuncture for depression is still controversial and there is a lack of meta-analysis of mechanisms. Consequently, we investigated acupuncture's efficacy and mechanism of depression. Methods: We searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science. The SYRCLE Risk of Bias Tool was used to assess bias risk. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 15.0 for indicators of depression mechanisms, body weight and behavioral tests. Results: A total of 22 studies with 497 animals with depressive-like behaviors were included. Meta-analysis showed that acupuncture significantly increased BDNF [SMD = 2.40, 95% CI (1.33, 3.46); I² = 86.6%], 5-HT [SMD = 2.28, 95% CI (1.08, 3.47); I² = 87.7%] compared to the control group (p < 0.05), and significantly reduced IL-1ß [SMD = -2.33, 95% CI (-3.43, -1.23); I² = 69.6%], CORT [SMD = -2.81, 95% CI (-4.74, -0.87); I² = 86.8%] (p < 0.05). Acupuncture improved body weight [SMD = 1.35, 95% CI (0.58, 2.11); I² = 84.5%], forced swimming test [SMD = -1.89, 95% CI (-2.55, -1.24); I² = 76.3%], open field test (crossing number [SMD = 3.08, 95% CI (1.98, 4.17); I² = 86.7%], rearing number [SMD = 2.53, 95% CI (1.49, 3.57); I² = 87.0%]) (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. Male life history strategies are regulated by the neuroendocrine system. Testosterone (T) and cortisol regulate male behaviors including parenting and facilitate managing tradeoffs at key transitions in development such as first-time fatherhood. Both hormones demonstrate marked fluctuations in the postnatal period, and this presents an opportunity to investigate the role of T and cortisol in postpartum depressive symptoms--comparably less studied in fathers than in mothers in the evolutionary literature. Prior work on depressive symptoms has yet to integrate insights from the "dual hormone hypothesis (DHH)" which has focused on how T and cortisol interact to jointly regulate traits associated with dominance and status-seeking (i.e., mating effort) but has yet to be included in models of parenting effort. In this research, we use secondary data to investigate the relationship between DHH and traits ostensibly opposed to status seeking (i.e., depressive symptoms). First-time fathers (n = 193) provided morning saliva samples 10 months following parturition and reported on the presence of depressive symptoms (BDI-II). Responses were decomposed into three factors: cognitive, affective, and somatic. Using hybrid latent variable structural equation modeling, we did not find evidence that T predicted variability in cognitive, affective, or somatic depressive symptom factors. We found a null effect for cortisol as well. Finally, we could not find evidence that the DHH variable (T × cortisol interaction) predicted any variability in cognitive, affective, or somatic depressive symptoms. While we did not find evidence to support our hypotheses using a secondary data set, this study contributes to research on the neuroendocrinology of depression in fathers. Discussion focuses on the limitations of sample demographics, timing of saliva and self-report collection, and the lack of extant theory specific to paternal postpartum depression. Background: Which patients benefit from the addition of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) to chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer (SCLC) remains unclear. There have been few reports on the efficacy of ICIs based on conventional immunohistochemical neuroendocrine (NE) markers (synaptophysin, chromogranin A, and neural cell adhesion molecule [NCAM]). In the present study, we aimed to analyze the relationship between the expression of immunohistochemical NE markers and the efficacy of ICIs in patients with extensive disease (ED)‐SCLC, to assess whether conventional NE markers are predictive of ICIs. Methods: Patients with untreated ED‐SCLC who received first‐line therapy at the Shizuoka Cancer Center between November 2002 and July 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated the efficacy of first‐line chemotherapy according to the expression status of each immunohistochemical NE marker in patients treated with ICI plus chemotherapy (ICI‐chemo group) and with chemotherapy alone (chemo group). Results: A total of 227 patients were included in the ICI‐chemo and chemo groups, respectively. The progression‐free survival (PFS) tended to be better in patients in the ICI‐chemo group than those treated with chemotherapy alone in patients with NE marker‐positive SCLC. In particular, it was statistically significant in patients with chromogranin A‐positive SCLC (p = 0.036). In patients with NE marker‐negative SCLC, no significant differences were observed in PFS between the two groups. There were no significant differences in overall survival (OS), regardless of the expression of any conventional NE marker. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the efficacy of ICIs in addition to chemotherapy may be poor in patients with NE marker‐negative SCLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The circadian clock regulates the behavior, physiology, and metabolism of mammals, and these characteristics, such as sleep-wake cycles, exercise capacity, and hormone levels, exhibit circadian rhythms. Light signaling is the main stimulator of the mammalian circadian system. The photoperiod regulates the reproductive cycle of seasonal breeding animals, and the circadian clock plays a pivotal role in this process. However, the role of the clock in coordinating animal behavior and physiology in response to photoperiodic changes needs further investigation. The present study investigated the changes and correlation of behavioral activities, physiological indicators, and gene expression in female striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis) within 24 h under a 12L:12D photoperiod. We found that the daily rhythms of sleep-wake and open field were significant in hamsters. The expression of clock genes, melatonin receptor genes, and genes involved in general metabolism oscillated significantly in central and peripheral tissues (brain, hypothalamus, liver, ovary, and thymus) and was significantly associated with behavior and physiology. Our results revealed that the neuroendocrine system regulated the rhythmicity of behavior and physiology, and central and peripheral clock genes (Bmal1, Clock, Per1, Per2, Cry1, and Cry2), melatonin receptor genes (MT1, MT2, and GPR50), and metabolizing genes (SIRT1, FGF21, and PPARa) played important roles. Our results suggest that central and peripheral circadian clocks, melatonin receptors, and genes involved in general metabolism may play key roles in maintaining circadian behavior and metabolic homeostasis in striped hamsters. Recent studies have demonstrated that the interaction of dietary constituents with taste and olfactory receptors and nociceptors expressed in the oral cavity, nasal cavity and gastrointestinal tract regulate homeostasis through activation of the neuroendocrine system. Polyphenols, of which 8000 have been identified to date, represent the greatest diversity of secondary metabolites in plants, most of which are bitter and some of them astringent. Epidemiological studies have shown that polyphenol intake contributes to maintaining and improving cardiovascular, cognitive and sensory health. However, because polyphenols have very low bioavailability, the mechanisms of their beneficial effects are unknown. In this review, we focused on the taste of polyphenols from the perspective of sensory nutrition, summarized the results of previous studies on their relationship with bioregulation and discussed their future potential. Therefore, understanding the relationship between stress and skin diseases is necessary. The skin, as the vital interface with the external environment, possesses its own complex immune system, and the neuroendocrine system plays a central role in the stress response of the body. Stress-induced alterations in the immune system can also disrupt the delicate balance of immune cells and inflammatory mediators in the skin, leading to immune dysregulation and increased susceptibility to various skin diseases. Stress can also affect the skin barrier function, impair wound healing, and promote the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby exacerbating existing skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, and urticaria. In the present review, we explored the intricate relationship between stress and skin diseases from a neuroendocrine-immune interaction perspective. We explored the occurrence and development of skin diseases in the context of stress, the stress models for skin diseases, the impact of stress on skin function and diseases, and relevant epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Understanding the relationship between stress and skin diseases from a neuroendocrine-immune interaction perspective provides a comprehensive framework for targeted interventions and new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases. Dilatation of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) ˃50 mm is a rare phenomenon. We present the case of successful surgical treatment a 63-year-old female patient who presented epigastric pain and weight loss of 10 kg in 6 months. Based on preoperative examination, the dilatation of MPD was 75 mm. The preliminary diagnosis was main duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm. Extended pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy with resection of the body of the pancreas was performed. According to the results of pathological and immunohistochemical studies, performed by independent experts, the final diagnosis of congenital anomaly of the ductal system and neuroendocrine tumor of the accessory pancreatic duct was made. The homeostasis of bone microenvironment is the foundation of bone health and comprises 2 concerted events: bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. In the early 21st century, leptin, an adipocytes-derived hormone, was found to affect bone homeostasis through hypothalamic relay and the sympathetic nervous system, involving neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine. This discovery has provided a new perspective regarding the synergistic effects of endocrine and nervous systems on skeletal homeostasis. Since then, more studies have been conducted, gradually uncovering the complex neuroendocrine regulation underlying bone homeostasis. Intriguingly, bone is also considered as an endocrine organ that can produce regulatory factors that in turn exert effects on neuroendocrine activities. After decades of exploration into bone regulation mechanisms, separate bioactive factors have been extensively investigated, whereas few studies have systematically shown a global view of bone homeostasis regulation. Therefore, we summarized the previously studied regulatory patterns from the nervous system and endocrine system to bone. This review will provide readers with a panoramic view of the intimate relationship between the neuroendocrine system and bone, compensating for the current understanding of the regulation patterns of bone homeostasis, and probably developing new therapeutic strategies for its related disorders. The interplay between the microbes and the skin barrier holds pivotal significance in skin health and aging. The skin and gut, both of which are critical immune and neuroendocrine system, harbor microbes that are kept in balance. Microbial shifts are seen with aging and may accelerate age-related skin changes. This comprehensive review investigates the intricate connection between microbe dynamics, skin barrier, and the aging process. The gut microbe plays essential roles in the human body, safeguarding the host, modulating metabolism, and shaping immunity. Aging can perturb the gut microbiome which in turn accentuates inflammaging by further promoting senescent cell accumulation and compromising the host's immune response. Skin microbiota diligently upholds the epidermal barrier, adeptly fending off pathogens. The aging skin encompasses alterations in the stratum corneum structure and lipid content, which negatively impact the skin's barrier function with decreased moisture retention and increased vulnerability to infection. Efficacious restoration of the skin barrier and dysbiosis with strategic integration of acidic cleansers, emollients with optimal lipid composition, antioxidants, and judicious photoprotection may be a proactive approach to aging. Furthermore, modulation of the gut-skin axis through probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics emerges as a promising avenue to enhance skin health as studies have substantiated their efficacy in enhancing hydration, reducing wrinkles, and fortifying barrier integrity. In summary, the intricate interplay between microbes and skin barrier function is intrinsically woven into the tapestry of aging. Sound understanding of these interactions, coupled with strategic interventions aimed at recalibrating the microbiota and barrier equilibrium, holds the potential to ameliorate skin aging. Oxytocin supports reproduction by promoting sexual- and nursing behavior. Moreover, it stimulates reproductive organs by different avenues. Oxytocin is released to the blood from terminals of oxytocinergic neurons which project from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland. Concomitantly, the dendrites of these neurons discharge oxytocin into neighboring areas of the hypothalamus. At this location it affects other neuroendocrine systems by autocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Moreover, sensory processing, affective functions, and reward circuits are influenced by oxytocinergic neurons that reach different sites in the brain. In addition to its facilitating impact on various aspects of reproduction, oxytocin is revealed to possess significant anti-inflammatory, restoring, and tranquilizing properties. This has been demonstrated both in many in-vivo and in-vitro studies. The oxytocin system may therefore have the capacity to alleviate detrimental physiological- and mental stress reactions. Thus, high levels of endogenous oxytocin may counteract inadequate inflammation and malfunctioning of neurons and supportive cells in the brain. A persistent low-grade inflammation increasing with age--referred to as inflammaging--may lead to a cognitive decline but may also predispose to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson. Interestingly, animal studies indicate that age-related destructive processes in the body can be postponed by techniques that preserve immune- and stem cell functions in the hypothalamus. It is argued in this article that sexual activity--by its stimulating impact on the oxytocinergic activity in many regions of the brain--has the capacity to delay the onset of age-related cerebral decay. This may also postpone frailty and age-associated diseases in the body. Finally, oxytocin possesses neuroplastic properties that may be applied to expand sexual reward. The release of oxytocin may therefore be further potentiated by learning processes that involves oxytocin itself. The hypothalamus is a brain structure that is deputed to maintain organism homeostasis by regulating autonomic function and hormonal production as part of the neuroendocrine system. Dysfunction in hypothalamic activity results in behavioral alterations, depression, metabolic syndromes, fatigue, and infertility. Remarkably, many of these symptoms are associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by focal demyelination, immune cell infiltration into the brain parenchyma, and neurodegeneration. Furthermore, altered hormonal levels have been documented in MS patients, suggesting the putative involvement of hypothalamic deficits in MS clinical manifestations. Yet, a systematic analysis of hypothalamic function in response to neuroinflammatory stress is still lacking. To fill this gap, here we performed a longitudinal profiling of the hypothalamic transcriptome upon experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE)—a murine disease model recapitulating key MS phenotypes at both histopathological and molecular levels. We show that changes in gene expression connected with an anti-inflammatory response start already at pre-onset and persist along EAE progression. Altered levels of hypothalamic neuropeptides were also detected, which possibly underlie homeostatic responses to stress and aberrant feeding behaviors. Last, a thorough investigation of the principal endocrine glands highlighted defects in the main steroidogenic pathways upon disease. Astrocytes, alongside oligodendrocytes and microglia, constitutes the glia tissues that accompany neurons. Given the significance and advancements in this field, this bibliographic review aims to in compile the information related to the structure and function of astrocytes. The review was conducted by searching for "astrocytes" in neurosciences journals at the cellular and molecular levels, such as "Glia", "Cells", and "Neuron", published within the last five years (2018-2023). The review encompasses the evolution of glia, types of astrocytes, and the structure and function of these cells. Additionally, it explores how astrocytes interact with other cells, as well as circulatory, immune, and neuroendocrine systems, highlighting their essential roles in metabolism, synaptogenesis, neuroplasticity, and neuroprotection. Background. COVID-19 is a pandemic disease due to viral infection. It spread throughout the world, and the association of COVID-19 with neuroendocrine system is a well-known fact especially while the connection between the endocrine and immune system neuroinflammation play a crucial role in pathophysiology. Therapeutic indication of Botulinum-neurotoxin-A (BoNT-A) is used in the treatment of focal post-stroke spasticity (PSS) and in re-habilitation which is regarded as a safe and effective type of treatment. Objective. To assess spasticity after COVID-19 infection. Methods. Thirty patients diagnosed as post-COVID-19 stroke spasticity were enrolled, their age ranged from (30-60 years). They had focal spasticity of lower extremities. BoNT-A was given in day 0 and 4 weeks later, in the gastrocnemius and soleus muscle. H-reflex was recorded from soleus muscles at 1st presentation and 4 weeks after injection of BoNT-A. Muscle power was assessed by Medical Research Council scale (MRC) and MAS. Results. The amplitude and latency of H-reflex record from soleus muscles and the H/M ratio showed a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-therapy with BoNT-A injection in cases with post COVID-19 spasticity. There was a significant increase in MRC scale but, MAS scale showed a significant reduction after injection of BoNT-A. Conclusion. Post COVID spasticity is a well-known complication after COVID-19 infection, there was clinical improvement in PSS post BoNT-A injections, which was assessed clinically by MAS and MRC scale, neurophysiological the H-reflex was correlated negatively regarding latency, while there was no correlation regarding H-reflex amplitude or Hmax/Mmax ratio and MAS. The brain-gut axis refers to the communication between the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract, with the gut microbiome playing a crucial role. While our understanding of the interaction between the gut microbiome and the host's physiology is still in its nascent stage, evidence suggests that the gut microbiota can indeed modulate host behavior. Understanding the specific mechanisms by which the gut microbiota community modulates the host's behavior remains the focus of present and future neuro-gastroenterology studies. This paper reviews several pieces of evidence from the literature on the impact of gut microbiota on host behavior across animal taxa. We explore the different pathways through which this modulation occurs, with the aim of deepening our understanding of the fascinating relationship between the gut microbiome and the central nervous system.
