The Italian industrial sector contains 22% of the final energy demand due to the poor energy performance of manufacturing buildings. This proposed study aimed to evaluate retrofit interventions for existing industrial buildings integrating photovoltaic solutions into the external envelope to improve both the environmental sustainability and the facade performance. The methodology is based on an innovative procedure including BIM and generative design tools. Starting from the Revit model of a representative case study, interoperability with energy analysis plugins via Grasshopper were exploited to optimize the differently oriented facade layout of photovoltaic modules to maximize the electricity production. In the case of comparable facade sizes, the building orientation had a minor impact on the results, although a southern exposure was preferable. The optimized configuration involved the installation of PV panels with a tilt angle ranging from −35° to −75°. The best compromise solution between the panel surface area and energy production during the summer solstice involves 466 m2 of PV modules. The design-optioneering approach was used to define possible alternatives to be explored for the possible installation of solar shading systems on existing windows. In this case, the impact on visual comfort within the working environment was chosen as a reference parameter, along with the value of the indoor air temperature. A decrease in this parameter equal to 0.46 was registered for the solution with horizontal (or nearly horizontal) shaders and a spacing ranging between 0.2 and 0.4. The integration of the BIM environment with generative design tools effectively assists decision-making processes for the selection of technological solutions in the building sector.

Protein structure analysis plays a primary role in understanding their biological functions. Being able to determine the atom depth index within the protein is crucial to gain insights into molecular interactions and structural stability. To address this need, the original version of Simple Atom Depth Index Calculator (SADIC) software was developed in 2006. However, with the rapid advancement of computational methodologies and the evolution of programming libraries, the original SADIC software has become obsolete and incompatible with modern computational environments. This is why we present SADIC v2, a modernized version of the software that is fully compatible and integrated with modern Python libraries.

This research explores the complexities of cesarean section in the context of family, health, and Islamic law. The main objective is to understand the views and experiences of Muslim families regarding cesarean sections, as well as analyze the health impacts and legal implications associated with them. The research enriches understanding of the role of cesarean section in Muslim communities, provides comprehensive insight into aspects of family, health, and Islamic law, and offers a framework to support informed decision-making in medical practice and health care policy. This study uses qualitative methods in describing family perspectives, Islamic health, and legal aspects regarding cesarean sections. The research approach used is a legal and sociological approach. The analysis method used is content analysis to explore family perspectives, Islamic health, and legal aspects regarding cesarean sections. The findings reveal a range of perspectives among Muslim families regarding caesarean sections, with health and safety considerations being major factors in decision-making. The health impact of cesarean section on mother and baby, including risks and benefits, is also examined in depth. In Islamic law, caesarean section is permitted if necessary, to protect the life of the mother or baby. Ethical and clinical recommendations should reflect relevant religious values and views. To make a decision regarding a cesarean section, it is important to consider a variety of factors, including family views, aspects of health, and Islamic law.

Stress distribution is influenced by the restoration material and the type of bond between material and tooth structure. The selection of materials that can distribute stress will affect the resistance and retention of ETT to mastication forces, thus biomechanical functions were achieved. Composite has mechanical properties similar to dentin, it can transmit and distribute stresses throughout the tooth surface. The disadvantage of composites in large cavities is their lack of toughness. The addition of fiber to composites can increase their toughness.Purpose: This research is to determine the stress distribution of a fiber-reinforced composite made of polyethylene and e-glass on the mesiolingual cavity of ETT.Materials and Methods: A three-dimensional model of the mandibular molar was prepared for cavity preparation and the formation of restorations using SolidWorks 2021. The models were analyzed with Abaqus 2020 to determine stress concentrations after given vertical and oblique loading.Results: The maximum and minimum principal stress data were obtained to assess material resistance and interfacial damage criterion. Polyethylene fiber shows a more homogeneous stress distribution because the modulus of elasticity is close to the dentin and has a thickness that can reduce the volume of the composite. The E-glass shows the stress concentration on the circumferential fiber and cavity floor.Conclusion: The stress distribution of fiber-reinforced composite on the buccolingual cavity of ETT using the finite element method did not show structural failure in the polyethylene group because the maximum and minimum principal stresses were lower than the strength of the material. Interfacial bond failure occurs at the enamel portion. The maximum and minimum principal values of e-glass indicate structural failure in the circumferential fiber and the base fiber because the stress exceeds the strength of the material. Abstract Proposals for new architectures that shorten the length of the transistor channel without the need for high‐end techniques are the focus of very recent breakthrough research. Although vertical and electrolyte‐gate transistors are previously developed separately, recent advances have introduced electrolytes into vertical transistors, resulting in electrolyte‐gated vertical field‐effect transistors (EGVFETs), which feature lower power consumption and higher capacitance. Here, EGVFETs are employed to study the charge transport mechanism of spray‐pyrolyzed zinc oxide (ZnO) films to develop a new photosensitive switch concept. The EGVFET's diode cell revealed a current‐voltage relationship arising from space‐charge‐limited current (SCLC), whereas its capacitor cell provided the field‐effect role in charge accumulation in the device's source perforations. The findings elucidate how the field effect causes a continuous shift in SCLC regimes, impacting the switching dynamics of the transistor. It is found ultraviolet light may mimic the field effect, i.e., a pioneering demonstration of current switching as a function of irradiance in an EGVFET. The research provides valuable insights into the charge transport characterization of spray‐pyrolyzed ZnO‐based transistors, paving the way for future nano‐ and optoelectronic applications.

The purpose of carrying out this research is to seehow PatternSocial Control of Traditional Leaders: An Effort to Realize Traditional Villages as Role Models in Crime Prevention (Study in the Traditional Village of Kampung Tengah, Siak Regency)whether it has gone well based on an approach to social values, religion and customary law and culture in accordance with the social and cultural conditions of indigenous communities in the Kampung Tengah Traditional Village, Siak Regency.The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach using ethnographic analysis, where in a research activity more comprehensive, valid, reliable and objective data will be obtained. Data sources were obtained by taking 4 data collection techniques, namely by indexicality, reflexivity, and contextual action as well as taking documentation. From the results and discussion, it can be concluded that the pattern of social control that has been implemented by traditional leaders in Kampung Tengah to date is quite good, this can be seen in the aspect of prevention, efforts to overcome social problems and anticipate problems of deviant behavior and delinquency in children and adolescents by strengthening application of religious values, internalization of traditional, social and cultural values ??as aspects of prevention by increasing the Human Resources of children and adolescents (in the sense of having to go to school). It is not enough to stop there, building supporting facilities to stimulate what children and teenagers understand needs to be encouraged and executed by the village government and traditional leaders so that it is always directed towards useful and positive activities. Background and Aims: Hypoalbuminemia, as defined by serum albumin (SA) levels ≤35 g/L, is associated to venous and arterial thrombosis in general population and in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown if SA ≤35 g/L is also associated to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis. Methods: Cirrhotic patients enrolled in the Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry (PRO-LIVER) study (n = 753), were followed-up for 2 years to assess the risk of PVT, that was diagnosed by Doppler ultrasonography. Child-Pugh classes, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, presence of hepatocellular carcinoma and laboratory variables including SA, D-dimer, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at baseline. Results: SA ≤35 g/L was detected in 52% of patients. A logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that higher Child-Pugh class, hepatocellular carcinoma and thrombocytopenia were significantly associated to SA ≤35 g/L. In a subgroup of patients where data regarding hs-CRP and D-dimer were available, SA ≤35 g/L was inversely associated with hs-CRP and D-dimer. During the follow-up, a total of 61 patients experienced PVT. A Kaplan Meier survival analysis showed SA ≤35 g/L was associated to increased risk of PVT compared to SA >35 g/L (P = .005). A multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that male sex, lower platelet count, and SA ≤35 g/L remained associated to PVT after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion: Cirrhotic patients with SA ≤35 g/L are at higher risk of experiencing PVT compared to those with SA >35 g/L and could be considered as potential candidates to anticoagulant prophylaxis for PVT prevention.

Abstract Background Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a rare disease, but the prognosis is very poor, especially in the immunosuppressed state with a non-HIV background, and there is no established treatment. Case presentations A 49-year-old patient who had undergone a renal transplant and was receiving prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil treatment was admitted for peritoneal dialysis initiation. While hospitalized, he experienced aphasia and other percutaneous symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a subcortical demyelinating lesion. JC virus DNA was identified in cerebrospinal fluid, and he was diagnosed with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. Immunosuppressant was ceased, and he was treated with mefloquine and mirtazapine. The patient subsequently underwent a head MRI scan, confirming lesion reduction, improved activities of daily life, and survival. Conclusions Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is commonly observed in patients with compromised immune systems, which was the case for this patient due to long-standing immunosuppressive medication usage and end-stage renal failure necessitating dialysis.

Antecedentes: En 2020, la Organización Mundial de la Salud declaró la COVID-19 como pandemia, por lo que se suspendieron los programas de tamizaje, afectando la detección oportuna del cáncer de mama en todo el mundo y generando un aumento de los casos posterior a la pandemia. Objetivo: Determinar la proporción de casos BI-RADS 4 y 5 en mastografías realizadas posterior a las restricciones por la COVID-19 comparadas con las del año 2019. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional, transversal y comparativo de pacientes con mastografías BI-RADS 4 o 5 tras las restricciones por la COVID-19 comparadas con las del año 2019 en una unidad de medicina familiar. Resultados: De un total de 5 945 mastografías, se realizaron 2 415 en 2019 y 3 530 en 2022. En 2019, 69 fueron BI-RADS > 4 (2.85%) y en 2022 aumentaron a 175 (4.95%) (p = 0.001). Este incremento fue proporcional para todos los grupos etarios (p < 0.045). Conclusiones: Hubo un 73% más mastografías clasificadas como BI-RADS 4 o 5 en el año posterior a la pandemia, en comparación con el año previo a ella.

Abstract Interactions among coexisting mesocarnivores can be influenced by different factors such as the presence of large carnivores, land‐use, environmental productivity, or human disturbance. Disentangling the relative importance of bottom‐up and top‐down processes can be challenging, but it is important for biodiversity conservation and wildlife management. The aim of this study was to assess how the interactions among mesocarnivores (red fox Vulpes vulpes, badger Meles meles, and pine marten Martes martes) were affected by large carnivores (Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx and wolf Canis lupus), land cover variables (proportion of agricultural land and primary productivity), and human disturbance, as well as how these top‐down and bottom‐up mechanisms were influenced by season. We analyzed 3 years (2018–2020) of camera trapping observations from Norway and used structural equation models to assess hypothesized networks of causal relationships. Our results showed that land cover variables were more strongly associated with mesocarnivore detection rates than large carnivores in Norway. This might be caused by a combination of low density of large carnivores in an unproductive ecosystem with strong seasonality. Additionally, detection rates of all mesocarnivores showed positive associations among each other, which were stronger in winter. The prevalence of positive interactions among predators might indicate a tendency to use the same areas and resources combined with weak interference competition. Alternatively, it might indicate some kind of facilitative relationship among species. Human disturbance had contrasting effects for different species, benefiting the larger mesocarnivores (red fox and badger) probably through food subsidization, but negatively affecting apex predators (wolf and lynx) and smaller mesocarnivores (pine marten). In a human‐dominated world, this highlights the importance of including anthropogenic influences in the study of species interactions.

This paper argues for proximity between the two branches of a jurisprudential–adjudicative genre: manuals for judges or the etiquette for the judgeship. I wish to demonstrate that the proximity, lexicography, ways and tools of argument, etc., are founded upon a meta-legal stratum that contains kalam theology. In this paper, I will elaborate on the genre and its discovery, define some basic principles for the field of discussion, and provide textual examples of the proximities between the two branches of the genre based on pre-legal or meta-halachic demands. I suggest a preliminary result here and lay the groundwork for further research in the future: The criteria for the appointment of the true judge sketch out his idealized personality. He is more than an administrator of the judicial bureaucracy: he is a guide for the legally perplexed peoplehood, both in Judaism and Islam.

Single-cell transcriptomics (scRNA-seq) is revolutionizing biological research, yet it faces challenges such as inefficient transcript capture and noise. To address these challenges, methods like neighbor averaging or graph diffusion are used. These methods often rely on k-nearest neighbor graphs from low-dimensional manifolds. However, scRNA-seq data suffer from the ‘curse of dimensionality’, leading to the over-smoothing of data when using imputation methods. To overcome this, sc-PHENIX employs a PCA-UMAP diffusion method, which enhances the preservation of data structures and allows for a refined use of PCA dimensions and diffusion parameters (e.g., k-nearest neighbors, exponentiation of the Markov matrix) to minimize noise introduction. This approach enables a more accurate construction of the exponentiated Markov matrix (cell neighborhood graph), surpassing methods like MAGIC. sc-PHENIX significantly mitigates over-smoothing, as validated through various scRNA-seq datasets, demonstrating improved cell phenotype representation. Applied to a multicellular tumor spheroid dataset, sc-PHENIX identified known extreme phenotype states, showcasing its effectiveness. sc-PHENIX is open-source and available for use and modification.

The study of rare diseases is important not only for the individuals affected but also for the advancement of medical knowledge and a deeper understanding of human biology and genetics. The wide repertoire of structural information now available from reliable and accurate prediction methods provides the opportunity to investigate the molecular origins of most of the rare diseases reviewed in the Orpha.net database. Thus, it has been possible to analyze the topology of the pathogenic missense variants found in the 2515 proteins involved in Mendelian rare diseases (MRDs), which form the database for our structural bioinformatics study. The amino acid substitutions responsible for MRDs showed different mutation site distributions at different three-dimensional protein depths. We then highlighted the depth-dependent effects of pathogenic variants for the 20,061 pathogenic variants that are present in our database. The results of this structural bioinformatics investigation are relevant, as they provide additional clues to mitigate the damage caused by MRD.

We refine and extend Ziv’s model and results regarding perfectly secure encryption of individual sequences. According to this model, the encrypter and the legitimate decrypter share a common secret key that is not shared with the unauthorized eavesdropper. The eavesdropper is aware of the encryption scheme and has some prior knowledge concerning the individual plaintext source sequence. This prior knowledge, combined with the cryptogram, is harnessed by the eavesdropper, who implements a finite-state machine as a mechanism for accepting or rejecting attempted guesses of the plaintext source. The encryption is considered perfectly secure if the cryptogram does not provide any new information to the eavesdropper that may enhance their knowledge concerning the plaintext beyond their prior knowledge. Ziv has shown that the key rate needed for perfect secrecy is essentially lower bounded by the finite-state compressibility of the plaintext sequence, a bound that is clearly asymptotically attained through Lempel–Ziv compression followed by one-time pad encryption. In this work, we consider some more general classes of finite-state eavesdroppers and derive the respective lower bounds on the key rates needed for perfect secrecy. These bounds are tighter and more refined than Ziv’s bound, and they are attained using encryption schemes that are based on different universal lossless compression schemes. We also extend our findings to the case where side information is available to the eavesdropper and the legitimate decrypter but may or may not be available to the encrypter.

Abstract The worldwide demand for reduced and restricted use of pesticides in agriculture due to serious environmental effects, health risks and the development of pathogen resistance calls for the discovery of new bioactive compounds. In the medical field, antibiotic‐resistant microorganisms have become a major threat to man, increasing mortality. Endophytes are endosymbiotic microorganisms that inhabit plant tissues without causing any visible damage to their host. Many endophytes secrete secondary metabolites with biological activity against a broad range of pathogens, making them potential candidates for novel drugs and alternative pesticides of natural origin. We isolated endophytes from wild plants in Israel, focusing on endophytes that secrete secondary metabolites with biological activity. We isolated 302 different endophytes from 30 different wild plants; 70 of them exhibited biological activity against phytopathogens. One biologically active fungal endophyte from the genus Penicillium, isolated from a squill (Urginea maritima) leaf, was further examined. Chloroform‐based extraction of its growth medium was similarly active against phytopathogens. High‐performance liquid chromatography separation followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis revealed a single compound—mycophenolic acid—as the main contributor to the biological activity of the organic extract.

Bone lesions affect individuals of different age groups, compromising their daily activities and potentially leading to prolonged morbidity. Over the years, new compositions and manufacturing technologies were developed to offer customized solutions to replace injured tissue and stimulate tissue regeneration. This work used digital light processing (DPL) technology for three-dimensional (3D) printing of porous structures using pre-ceramic polymer, followed by pyrolysis to obtain SiOC vitreous scaffolds. The SiOC scaffolds produced had an amorphous structure (compatible with glass) with an average porosity of 72.69% ± 0.99, an average hardness of 935.1 ± 71.0 HV, and an average maximum flexural stress of 7.8 ± 1.0 MPa, similar to cancellous bone tissue. The scaffolds were not cytotoxic and allowed adult stem cell adhesion, growth, and expansion. After treatment with osteoinductive medium, adult stem cells in the SiOC scaffolds differentiated to osteoblasts, assuming a tissue-like structure, with organization in multiple layers and production of a dense fibrous matrix rich in hydroxyapatite. The in vitro analyses supported the hypothesis that the SiOC scaffolds produced in this work were suitable for use as a bone substitute for treating critically sized lesions, with the potential to stimulate the gradual process of regeneration of the native tissue. The data obtained stimulate the continuity of studies with the SiOC scaffolds developed in this work, paving the way for evaluating safety and biological activity in vivo.

The disease burden includes physical limitations, psychosocial discomfort, and a reduced quality of life (HRQoL). This study presents the results of a parent-reported survey on the psychosocial impact of AD on Italian pre-adolescent children (6– 11 years old), with a specific focus on bullying, self-isolation, absenteeism, and presenteeism.Methods: An online questionnaire was sent to 3067 random recipients and 160 matched the inclusion criteria for age, self-reported AD diagnosis, localizations (according to ISAAC), and disease severity (POEM ≥ 8). 100 children, with comparable ages, not matching the inclusion criteria for AD, were recruited as a control group.Results: Children with AD and their caregivers had a significantly lower quality of sleep (QoS) compared to the control group. The presence of AD was directly responsible for many restless nights, both in children and caregivers (58.9 and 55.4 respectively). Children with AD and their parents also experienced significantly more daytime drowsiness (43.6 and 54.6 days, respectively). Children with AD were more frequently victims of bullying at school (20.0% vs 9.0%; p≤ 0.05) or in other social environments (16.9% vs 3.0%; p≤ 0.05). AD caused 17.7 days of absenteeism and 20.1 days of presenteeism per student over the previous 12 months, accounting for 37.8 days of study impairment overall. Severe/very severe AD had a significantly greater impact on presenteeism than moderate AD (25.1 vs 17.5 days; p≤ 0.05). Presenteeism, which was more pronounced among bullied students, was positively correlated with absenteeism only in the AD cohort.Conclusion: AD has a detrimental impact on the HRQoL of pediatric patients, causing stigmatization and social isolation. Functional distress was also reported by caregivers. Abstract Local adaptation to annually changing environments has evolved in numerous species. Seasonal coat colour change is an adaptation that has evolved in multiple mammal and bird species occupying areas that experience seasonal snow cover. It has a critical impact on fitness as predation risk may increase when an individual is mismatched against its habitat's background colour. In this paper, we investigate the correlation between landscape covariates and moult timing in a native winter‐adapted herbivore, the mountain hare (Lepus timidus), throughout Norway. Data was collected between 2011 and 2019 at 678 camera trap locations deployed across an environmental gradient. Based on this data, we created a Bayesian multinomial logistic regression model that quantified the correlations between landscape covariates and coat colour phenology and analysed among season and year moult timing variation. Our results demonstrate that mountain hare moult timing is strongly correlated with altitude and latitude with hares that live at higher latitudes and altitudes keeping their winter white coats for longer than their conspecifics that inhabit lower latitudes and altitudes. Moult timing was also weakly correlated with climate zone with hares that live in coastal climates keeping their winter white coats for longer than hares that live in continental climates. We found evidence of some among year moult timing variation in spring, but not in autumn. We conclude that mountain hare moult timing has adapted to local environmental conditions throughout Norway.

As an area that has the largest peatland on the island of Sumatra, various problems occured on peatlands in Riau Province. Forest fires that have an impact on public health and damage to the peat ecosystem due to inappropriate land use are examples of these problems. The Pekanbaru State Forestry Vocational School was chosen as a place for counseling, because this institution will produce forestry technical personnel who have environmental insight. It is necessary to give them material about the condition of peatlands in Riau Province where they are currently located. It is hoped that after they graduate, they will have sufficient insight and knowledge about peatland cultivation and conservation. Students seemed enthusiastic to see the presentation of the material as well as pictures and videos about the condition of peatlands in Riau. This was followed by a discussion forum and question and answer session. To measure the success of this activity, students fill out a short questionnaire containing questions about their understanding of the material provided. From the results of the questionnaire, students seemed to understand the importance of knowledge about peatlands, and were committed to maintaining their sustainability.

One of the areas in Indonesia that uses eels is the Sumbawa Island community. The local community knowledge approach is an important for fisheries management, because it is an inherent component of fishery resources. This is preliminary study of eels in Sumbawa Island. This study aimed to examine the distribution, pattern of fishing, and utilization of eels from knowledge of local communities. Data were taken through in-depth interviews with 166 respondents. The study was conducted from November to December 2021. Interviews were conducted to obtain information and knowledge from local communities about eels (locations where they were eels found, fishing gear used, time, season and, utilization of eel, and community knowledge regarding its protection status). The results showed that the eels are found in dams, rivers, and estuaries. Most eels were caught from November to December in rainy season. Most people catch eels out of a hobby. Fishing rods and stuns are the two main fishing tools used to catch eels. There are three types of eel utilization, namely (1) consumed, (2) distributed to family and neighbors, and (3) marketed. Respondents (83.64%) did not know about the limited protection for several species of eels.

O objetivo do presente artigo é investigar como a pesquisa acadêmica aborda a relação entre o capital humano, a gestão do conhecimento e o setor público. Para tal, foi realizada uma revisão integrativa com termos chaves ligados às três temáticas citadas, sendo conduzida com dados importados da base Scopus. Entre os resultados alcançados, foram identificadas seis clusters de abordagem temática que, após a referida análise, possibilitaram a identificação das formas como os recursos humanos contribuem para a gestão do conhecimento nos setores públicos, bem como as consequências para as pessoas decorrentes da implementação desta. Este artigo contribui para o enriquecimento das pesquisas que investigam a importância do fator pessoas sobre a gestão do conhecimento em organizações públicas, promovendo a síntese dos estudos mais recentes sobre o tema.

A finales del siglo xix varios intelectuales mexicanos de raigambre positivista se dieron a la tarea de construir un ideal de feminidad que reforzaba la condición doméstica de las mujeres. Para Horacio Barreda esa condición se fundamentaba en la naturaleza. En contra de tales posiciones se alzaron las voces de las primeras sufragistas del país, es el caso de Hermila Galindo, cuyas ideas se confrontarán aquí con las de Barreda. El resultado es que Galindo elabora un feminismo en el que convergen la autonomía de la mujer y el bienestar de la colectividad.

Introduction: Fractures in ankylosing spine disorders (ASD) are associated with high complication and mortality rates. During the posterior stabilization of these fractures, reduction is often partial, resulting in the persistence of a significant anterior diastasis. Our objective was to evaluate the safety and efficiency of isolated posterior stabilization in elderly ASD patients, without direct reduction of the anterior diastasis, in terms of clinical and radiological outcomes, complications, and mortality. Methods: This retrospective study included 46 patients, mean age 79.3 years, with ASD, who underwent isolated posterior stabilization, open or percutaneous, for thoracolumbar fractures. The average follow-up was 21.7 months, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Autonomy (Parker score) and radiological results (lordotic angulation) were analyzed pre-and post-operatively. Results: Autonomy was maintained at the last follow-up, with no significant difference in Parker’s score. The consolidation rate was 94.6%. No implant failure was recorded. Despite the absence of an anterior procedure, lordotic angulation was significantly reduced by 2.6° at 6 months (p = 0.02). The rate of surgical complications following open surgeries was 10.9% (n = 5), of which 6.5% were infections. No surgical complications were reported in percutaneous surgeries. The rate of medical complications was 67.4% (n = 31), with a rate of 88.2% in the open surgery group, compared to 55.2% in the percutaneous surgery group. An open approach was associated with a five-fold higher risk of complications (p = 0.049). Nine patients died during follow-up (19.6%). Conclusions: Isolated posterior stabilization in the treatment of thoracolumbar spine fractures in elderly ASD patients is a safe technique promoting autonomy preservation, and high radiological bony healing with acceptable complication and mortality rates. The persistent anterior gap is partially reduced when the spine is loaded and does not seem to require an anterior procedure, thus decreasing complications. Percutaneous surgery should be the technique of choice to reduce surgical complications.

We extend Ziv and Lempel’s model of finite-state encoders to the realm of lossy compression of individual sequences. In particular, the model of the encoder includes a finite-state reconstruction codebook followed by an information lossless finite-state encoder that compresses the reconstruction codeword with no additional distortion. We first derive two different lower bounds to the compression ratio, which depend on the number of states of the lossless encoder. Both bounds are asymptotically achievable by conceptually simple coding schemes. We then show that when the number of states of the lossless encoder is large enough in terms of the reconstruction block length, the performance can be improved, sometimes significantly so. In particular, the improved performance is achievable using a random-coding ensemble that is universal, not only in terms of the source sequence but also in terms of the distortion measure.

The utility of mouse and rat studies critically depends on their replicability in other laboratories. A widely advocated approach to improving replicability is through the rigorous control of predefined animal or experimental conditions, known as standardization. However, this approach limits the generalizability of the findings to only to the standardized conditions and is a potential cause rather than solution to what has been called a replicability crisis. Alternative strategies include estimating the heterogeneity of effects across laboratories, either through designs that vary testing conditions, or by direct statistical analysis of laboratory variation. We previously evaluated our statistical approach for estimating the interlaboratory replicability of a single laboratory discovery. Those results, however, were from a well-coordinated, multi-lab phenotyping study and did not extend to the more realistic setting in which laboratories are operating independently of each other. Here, we sought to test our statistical approach as a realistic prospective experiment, in mice, using 152 results from 5 independent published studies deposited in the Mouse Phenome Database (MPD). In independent replication experiments at 3 laboratories, we found that 53 of the results were replicable, so the other 99 were considered non-replicable. Of the 99 non-replicable results, 59 were statistically significant (at 0.05) in their original single-lab analysis, putting the probability that a single-lab statistical discovery was made even though it is non-replicable, at 59.6%. We then introduced the dimensionless "Genotype-by-Laboratory" (GxL) factor-the ratio between the standard deviations of the GxL interaction and the standard deviation within groups. Using the GxL factor reduced the number of single-lab statistical discoveries and alongside reduced the probability of a non-replicable result to be discovered in the single lab to 12.1%. Such reduction naturally leads to reduced power to make replicable discoveries, but this reduction was small (from 87% to 66%), indicating the small price paid for the large improvement in replicability. Tools and data needed for the above GxL adjustment are publicly available at the MPD and will become increasingly useful as the range of assays and testing conditions in this resource increases.

This paper presents a parallel zigzag (raster) tool-path generation method for Additive Manufacturing (AM). Based on the analysis of some ordinary serial algorithms, it was observed that some compute-intensive operations could be parallelized by using a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) architecture. However, to achieve this, many challenges were faced and solved by designing a method to work concurrently with individual contour segments on multiple layers while keeping the data organized. The method’s ability to solve the zigzag generation problem was verified, and its performance was measured by running an exhaustive search for optimal raster angles to reduce manufacturing time. The results showed that the method was effective and generated relevant computational gain, being up to 9 times faster than its serial counterpart. In the tool-path optimization, the simulations found configurations yielding an average length of raster lines up to 38% longer, which, in turn, can reduce manufacturing time.

Introduction: Acquiring the ability to perform and interpret statistics in research is a fundamental skill for undergraduate students. However, in 2020, only 45.2% of the curricula of Mexican medical schools accredited by the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Medical Education (COMAEM) included at least one medical statistics course. Therefore, this study aims to determine biostatistics courses’ content and teaching approaches in Mexican medical school programs. Methods: This study involved a comprehensive review of biostatistics courses offered in all Mexican medical schools accredited by the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Medical Education. A rigorous five-phase process was conducted to obtain the course curricula, which included searching for e-mail addresses on official websites, making phone calls, and scouting social media. The collected curricula were categorized according to their respective teaching approaches. Results: The data were collected from 42 out of 67 possible medical school programs (62.68% response rate). The analysis revealed that while 66.7% of the syllabi included descriptive statistics, only 50% of them covered hypothesis testing for inferential statistics. The most common teaching approach was research methodology, accounting for 45.2% of the programs, followed by epidemiology at 38.2% and clinical application at 16.7%. Conclusions: In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that teaching medical statistics in Mexican medical schools remains inadequate. Standardizing the curriculum in this area may enhance students’ ability to critically evaluate scientific information and promote the application of evidence-based medicine.

Background: Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) are important tools to establish the effects of a given intervention. Investigators should focus on outcomes that patients perceive: patient-important outcomes (PIOs), clinical endpoints that patients value directly and reflect how they feel, function, or survive. However, it is easier to consider surrogated outcomes to reduce costs and achieve better-looking results. The problem with these outcomes is that they indirectly measure PIOs, which might not correlate linearly or translate reliably into a positive PIO. Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE for atopic disease RCTs rated among the top 10 allergic diseases and general internal medicine journals from the last 10 years. Two independent reviewers worked in duplicate and independently to collect data from all eligible articles. We gathered information regarding the type of study, title, author information, journal, intervention type, atopic disease, and primary and secondary outcomes. We assessed the outcomes investigators used in RCTs of atopic diseases and asthma. Results: This quantitative analysis included n = 135 randomized clinical trials. The most studied atopic disease during the period selected was asthma (n = 69), followed by allergic rhinitis (n = 51). When divided by atopic disease, primary outcomes in RCTs valuing allergic rhinitis had the most significant proportion of PIOs (76.7), asthma surrogated outcomes (38), and asthma/allergic rhinitis laboratory outcomes (42.9). PIOs in allergic rhinitis trials had the most significant proportion of PIOs favoring the intervention (81.4), asthma had the greatest proportion of surrogated outcomes (33.3), and asthma/allergic rhinitis laboratory outcomes (40). When divided by atopic disease, trials studying atopic dermatitis and urticaria had the same proportion of PIOs (64.7) as their secondary outcomes. Asthma had the highest (37.5) surrogate outcomes. Journals of general/internal medicine had a greater proportion of PIOs, and a post hoc analysis showed a significant difference in the proportion and secondary outcomes that favored the intervention between PIOs and laboratory outcomes. Conclusion: Approximately 7.5 out of 10 primary outcomes in RCTs published in general/internal medicine are PIOs compared to 5 out of 10 primary outcomes in atopic disease journals. Investigators should focus on selecting patient-important outcomes in their clinical trials to establish clinical guidelines with better-quality recommendations that impact patients’ life and values. Abstract Background and rationale Little is known about SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion in asymptomatic patients affected by solid cancer, and whether it is associated with specific transcriptomics changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Methods Patients affected by solid cancer treated in a top comprehensive cancer center in Italy during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave, and negative for COVID-19-symptoms since the first detection of COVID-19 in Italy, were prospectively evaluated by SARS-CoV-2 serology in the period between April 14th and June 23rd 2020. Follow-up serologies were performed, every 21–28 days, until August 23rd 2020. All SARS-CoV-2 IgM + patients underwent confirmatory nasopharyngeal swab (NPS). PBMCs from a subset of SARS-CoV-2 IgM + patients were collected at baseline, at 2 months, and at 7 months for transcriptome sequencing. Results SARS-CoV-2 serology was performed on 446 of the 466 recruited patients. A total of 14 patients (3.14%) tested positive for at least one SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin in the period between April 14th and August 23rd 2020. Incidence of SARS-CoV-2 IgM decreased from 1.48% in the first month of the accrual to 0% in the last month. Viral RNA could not be detected in any of the NPS. PBMC serial transcriptomic analysis showed progressive downregulation of interleukin 6 upregulated signatures, chemokine-mediated signaling and chemokine-chemokine receptor KEGG pathways. B- and T-cell receptor pathways (p-values = 0.0002 and 0.017 respectively) were progressively upregulated. Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion rate in asymptomatic patients affected by solid cancer is consistent with that of asymptomatic COVID-19 assessed in the general population through NPS at the peak of the first wave. Transcriptomic features over time in IgM + asymptomatic cases are suggestive of previous viral exposure.

Digital reconstruction of honey bee combs using X-ray micro-computed tomography provides a computational tool to analyze comb geometry and material distribution. Ranging from the individual-cell scale to the whole hive, this tool allows investigation of the relationship between comb architecture, the environment, and social behavior.

Sporothrix schenckii, Sporothrix brasiliensis, and Sporothrix globosa are the main etiological agents of this disease; and even though many efforts have been made recently to understand the Sporothrix-host interaction, little is known about S. globosa, an underestimated species. This organism shows the lowest virulence among the members of the Sporothrix pathogenic clade and represents an important pathogenic agent due to its global distribution. Here, we offer a review with all the known information about S. globosa, including its genome and proteomic information, and compare it with S. schenckii and S. brasiliensis, to explain the differences observed among these species, in terms of virulence, the host immune response, and the antifungal sensitivity. Abstract Outdoor recreation is increasing and affects habitat use and selection by wildlife. These effects are challenging to study, especially for elusive species with large spatial requirements, as it is hard to obtain reliable proxies of recreational intensity over extensive areas. Commonly used proxies, such as the density of, or distance to, hiking paths, ignore outdoor recreation occurring on other linear feature types. Here we utilized crowdsourced data from the Strava training app to obtain a large-scale proxy for pedestrian outdoor recreation intensity in southeast Norway. We used the proxy and GPS-tracking data from collared Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) to investigate how recreation affects habitat selection at the home range scale and local scale by lynx during summer. We fitted resource selection functions at the two scales using conditional logistic regression. Our analysis revealed that lynx avoided areas of recreational activity at the local scale, but not at home range scale. Nonetheless, lynx frequently used areas associated with recreation, and to a greater degree at night than during the day. Our results suggest that local-scale avoidance of recreation and temporal adjustments of habitat use by lynx mitigate the need for a home range-scale response towards recreation. Scale-dependent responses and temporal adjustments in habitat use may facilitate coexistence between humans and large carnivores.

Background: As more risk factors are identified for Parkinson’s disease (PD), attention has increased toward hematological disorders, as studies have found increased eryptosis, a process characterized by increased erythrocyte apoptosis, in PD patients. We aimed to synthesize scientific evidence assessing the effect of anemia on future PD incidence. Material and methods: A systematic review was conducted on multiple electronic databases. Any study that assessed the effect or association between presence of anemia and future PD in a longitudinal manner was considered for inclusion. Results: Five of the 5525 articles met inclusion criteria; three retrospective cohort studies and two case–control studies. Anemia exposure definition varied among studies. Four of the five studies observed an increased risk for PD; pooled analysis showed a non-significantly increased risk for PD in the cohorts (RR = 1.10; 95% CI = 0.08-15.84) and case–control studies (RR = 1.44; 95% CI = 0.04-52.47). However, heterogeneity among studies was high (I2 = 97, p < 0.01 and I2 = 85, p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: There are few clinical studies on the association of anemia and PD, despite growing preclinical evidence on their connection. In this review, a tendency toward an increased risk for PD in anemic population was observed, with further research needed to reach a definite conclusion.

Every day people always produce household waste. In an average day each resident produces 2-3 liters of waste. To reduce the amount of waste that is disposed of in the TPA, the community needs to carry out their own waste processing techniques. The most appropriate method of processing organic waste is to use the compost. Compost is an effort to process organic waste through a controlled decomposition process. The main product of composting is environmental cleanliness, because the amount of disposing organic waste in the landfill that can be reduced. Subsequence, it can be obtained the compost yield as another advantage. Composting with the Takakura method is very suitable for tropical areas and household scale.

Mentre l’esplosione del fenomeno moda, ha caratterizzato la seconda metà del secolo scorso, il turismo ha visto l’aumento esponenziale dei suoi numeri con l’arrivo del nuovo millennio. Senza dubbio i due settori si sono sovrapposti e incrociati con altri aspetti della società contemporanea che vede la trasformazione di elementi della vita quotidiana in fenomeni di massa e soprattutto in motori di sviluppo economico, basti pensare al cibo. L’esame di quanto accaduto negli ultimi decenni a Firenze, città con un patrimonio culturale unico, una lunga vocazione turistica e un ruolo rilevante, guadagnato fin dal dopoguerra, in quanto sede di presentazione delle collezioni, può costituire uno strumento per tentare di analizzare un argomento molto variegato e complesso data la vasta portata dei due settori coinvolti.

On several occasions, scholars have pointed out that parts of halakhic literature have survived only in a rather scattered way and that, consequently, the history of Jewish life and culture must be reconstructed from dispersed literary remnants. The Jewish elite across Europe, from the Ashkenazi Middle Ages and, with some interruptions in the early modern period, into the last generation before the Second World War, were constantly producing, consulting, collecting, and preserving Jewish literature of many kinds. The Hebräische Fragmente in Österreich data project (https://hebraica.at/Startseite/) was founded in 1991, and since 2008 has been directed by PD Dr. Martha Keil, senior scientist at the Institute of Austrian Historical Research at the University of Vienna and director of the Institute for Jewish History in Austria, St. Pölten. This project has provided online access to all the Austrian Hebrew fragments that have been preserved in book bindings. In this essay, I would like to report some of the achievements of this project and outline its future objectives and prospects.

Abstract Coat coloration plays an important role in communication, camouflage, and sexual selection in animals. Genetic mutations can lead to anomalous colorations such as melanism and leucism, where animals appear, respectively, darker or lighter than normal. Reporting abnormal coloration in wild animals is an important first step to understand the distribution, prevalence, and potential fitness consequences of these rare events. Here, we report several records of suspected leucism in the Eurasian badger (Meles meles) in a population in central Norway. Several camera traps recorded at least two leucistic individuals between 2017 and 2020. It took considerable effort, almost 400,000 camera trap nights over a period of 10 years all over Norway, to obtain a total of eleven records of leucistic badgers, indicating the rarity of this phenotype. It is unclear what has caused the presence of multiple leucistic badgers in a single population, but recent colonization and lack of predators might have played a role. Due to our observations, future studies can now be developed to study the underlying mechanisms and potential consequences of leucism in this badger population. The increasing use of networks of camera traps in wildlife research will provide new opportunities to record rare coloration in wild animals.

Abstract Background Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) requires complex care that generate elevated costs, which results in a high economic impact for the family. The aim of this systematic review was to collect and cluster the information currently available on healthcare costs associated with JIA after the introduction of biological therapies. Methods We comprehensively searched in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Databases for studies from January 2000 to March 2021. Reviewers working independently and in duplicate appraised the quality and included primary studies that report total, direct and/or indirect costs related to JIA for at least one year. The costs were converted to United States dollars and an inflationary adjustment was made. Results We found 18 eligible studies including data from 6,540 patients. Total costs were reported in 10 articles, ranging from $310 USD to $44,832 USD annually. Direct costs were reported in 16 articles ($193 USD to $32,446 USD), showing a proportion of 55 to 98 % of total costs. Those costs were mostly related to medications and medical appointments. Six studies reported indirect costs ($117 USD to $12,385 USD). Four studies reported costs according to JIA category observing the highest in polyarticular JIA. Total and direct costs increased up to three times after biological therapy initiation. A high risk of reporting bias and inconsistency of the methodology used were found. Conclusion The costs of JIA are substantial, and the highest are derived from medication and medical appointments. Indirect costs of JIA are underrepresented in costs analysis.
