Methyl mercaptan is a typical volatile organosulfur pollutant contained in many gases emitted by urban waste treatment, various industries, natural gas handling, refining processes, and energy production. This work is a comprehensive overview of the scientific and practical aspects related to the management of methyl mercaptan pollution. The main techniques, including absorption, adsorption, oxidation, and biological treatments, are examined in detail. For each method, its capability as well as the technical advantages and drawbacks have been highlighted. The emerging methods developed for the removal of methyl mercaptan from natural gas are also reviewed. These methods are based on the catalytic conversion of CH3SH to hydrocarbons and H2S. The world faces several problems related to natural gas resource rents and energy production from renewable sources. One of the main problems is the influence of energy imports, manufacturing exports, and alternative energy sources on natural gas and electricity production from renewable sources. Energy imports, manufacturing exports, and alternative energy sources can impact natural gas and electricity production. This paper examines natural gas resource rents and electricity production from renewable sources nexus from 1971 to 2021, using energy imports, manufacturer's exports, and alternative energy sources in China. Electricity production from renewable sources and manufacturing exports are negatively associated with natural gas resource rents. Energy imports and alternative energy sources positively relate to natural gas resource rents in China. These results suggest that the energy sector in China is highly interconnected and that policies that seek to promote renewable energy sources and other alternatives can positively affect natural gas resource rents. China needs to develop an energy policy considering the policy implications of energy imports and natural gas resource rents. Such a policy should focus on increasing domestic production, reducing energy imports, and ensuring adequate revenue from natural gas resource rents. Additionally, regulations could be implemented that support the development of alternative energy sources, such as requiring utilities to purchase a certain percentage of their power from renewable sources. The search for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources is increasingly growing. Aligning this demand with another environmental problem, such as sewage treatment/disposal, is a strategic priority. In light of this, the aim of this study was to estimate the energy potential of sewage generated in the Brazilian state of São Paulo (SP) by using it to produce biomethane. The study also evaluated the viability of using this byproduct of sewage treatment (biomethane) as a substitute for natural gas (NG), as both of them have similar lower heat values. To do this, information was gathered regarding the population, gross domestic product per capita, sewage collected, and natural gas consumption for each of the state's 645 cities, and, based on this, the sewage energy potential, the amount of NG to be substituted by biomethane, and the reduction in CO2 emissions were calculated. Moreover, in order to address a possible allocation of biomethane that could potentially be produced in each SP city and sent to currently NG-consuming cities, an optimization algorithm was proposed. The results indicated a sewage energy potential of 4.68 × 109 kWh/yr for the entire SP state, which would be enough to supply around 10% of the energy value of all the NG currently consumed. It was also observed that from 130 cities with NG consumption, 10 could produce enough biomethane to fully satisfy the natural gas demand. In the elected scenario of optimization, 291 cities were found to be capable of supplying the demand of 26 cities that currently use NG. The potential to reduce CO2 emissions is between 1.81 × 106 and 2.42 × 106 ton/yr, and this range could increase if sewage treatment coverage grows. Despite the challenges inherent in extrapolating a potential study to scenarios that require significative investment, the results obtained are useful for formulating public policies for decarbonization in the near future. Waste heat recovery holds significant importance in the context of natural gas power plants, as it facilitates the utilization of energy loss, leading to enhanced overall performance and mitigating adverse environmental effects. By harnessing and employing waste heat, power plants possess the capability to modify and optimize their operation, making a substantial contribution toward sustainable power/energy generation. Therefore, this study proposes a novel and eco-friendly approach to utilizing the flue gas emitted by a natural gas power plant. In addition to recovering waste heat, this method involves harnessing the flue gas for methanol production. The proposed system consists of an organic Rankine cycle, and absorption chiller, heating provider units, an electrolyzer for hydrogen generation, and a methanol synthesis unit. The novel method is implemented through computer-aided simulation using the Aspen HYSYS software and is subjected to an extensive analysis encompassing energy, exergy, environmental, and economic viewpoints. The simulation results exhibit producing 2712 kg/h of methanol with a purity of 99.97 mol%, 395.67 kg/s of hot water, 378 kg/s of chilled water, and 12253.57 kW of power. In this process, the energy and exergy efficiencies are 94.35% and 31.74%, respectively. Parametric study results demonstrate that reducing the gas turbine pressure and increasing the working fluid temperature in the evaporator of the absorption chiller cycle leads to improved exergy efficiency. At this stage, there are many dust-hazardous industries, and occupational pneumoconiosis has a high incidence for a long time. To solve the dust pollution problem in coal processing plant workshops, the dust particle field and liquid droplet particle field were numerically simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the influences of the induced airflow and corridor wind speed on the internal airflow field of the workshop were investigated to derive the dust pollution mechanism in the coal plant workshop under the change in the wind flow field. In this study, it was shown that the wind flow rate in the coal processing plant workshop is mainly affected by the corridor wind speed, and the higher the corridor wind speed is, the higher the wind flow rate. The induced airflow mainly affected the direction of the wind flow field in the workshop. According to the conclusions obtained from the simulations, a spray dust reduction system was designed for the coal processing plant workshop and applied in the Huangyuchuan coal processing plant. On-site measurement revealed that the dust reduction effect inside the coal processing plant workshop is obvious, and the overall dust reduction efficiency in the workshop reaches more than 94%, which meets the requirements of environmentally sustainable development and clean production. The combined production of electricity and thermal energy (combined heat and power or co-generation) is the most efficient and convenient approach to reduce costs for energy at industrial power plants and district heating plants that use natural gas as fuel to produce thermal energy for various needs. This paper analyses the operational characteristics of the combined heat and power plant, which has been operating since January 1, 2021, at the Voždovac Heating Plant as part of the Belgrade district heating system. The combined heat and power plant consists of three gas engine units with a total nominal electric power of 10 MW and thermal power of 10.1 MW, which use natural gas as fuel. The combined heat and power plant is used for district heating and preparing domestic hot water while electricity is sold to the local electric grid. The analysis in this paper focuses on the plant's operational characteristics: the number of working hours, the total energy consumption and energy production, the efficiency as well as the operational and maintenance costs. Also, the impact of the drastic changes in the prices of natural gas, electricity, and maintenance costs in the last year on the financial profitability of the combined heat and power plant was analysed in particular. As the core process of natural gas purification plant, natural gas sweetening directly affects the production efficiency and product quality of the purification plant. However, process modeling based on sulfur content prediction presents challenges in adaptability and accuracy. To tackle this, a machine learning‐based modeling approach is proposed that integrates an adaptive immune genetic algorithm with random forest (RF) to intelligently select process features as input variables for RF modeling. The industrial result indicates that the proposed method is able to remove interfering variables and adaptively achieve optimal model precision for different scenarios. Rice straw (RS) is the residue obtained during the rice processing process, and is recognized as one of the most abundant biomass resources in the world. Approximately 800 million to 1 billion tons of rice straw are produced globally every year, and most of them are considered general waste and typically end up in landfills or incineration. This approach wastes resources and can also lead to environmental pollution. In the current study, the RS was used as the source of biodiesel production and a comprehensive process model of the RS valorization process was developed to evaluate the energy flow, production efficiency, production costs, and greenhouse gas emissions in Hunan Province, China. The evaluation results showed that the energy efficiency of biodiesel production from rice strawand the overall energy efficiency of the rice straw valorization process are reported as 52.1% and 56.1%, respectively. The minimum selling price of biodiesel, which is CNY 3.03/kg, is considerably lower than the current market prices for similar products in China. The largest proportion of the production cost of biodiesel is the cost of natural gas, followed by utilities, capital, transportation, plant maintenance and overheads, consumables, labor, and waste disposal. For the current RS valorization plant with a 5000 kg/h RS feed rate, the investment payback times are 8.9 yr and 7.1 yr when the biodiesel is sold at the lowest (CNY 4/kg) and highest (CNY 4.6/kg) market price, respectively. Environmental analysis shows that the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of biodiesel production is 75.8 g CO2eq/MJ, which is only about 52% of traditional fossil diesel and indicating that biodiesel is an environmentally friendly energy source. Due to the large non-homogeneity of coal reservoirs, there is a large uncertainty about the extent of the impact on coal bed methane production capacity. The Hanchengbei Block has the problems of early exploration, less available production data, and large variations in developed production capacity within a single well group during test production. Therefore, how to use the existing data to analyze the geological factors affecting the development of coalbed methane in the Hanchengbei Block is particularly important. In this paper, based on the coal seam properties and production characteristics of the Hanchengbei Block, a three-dimensional geological model of the area was meticulously constructed using Petrel 2015 modeling software. Through the utilization of stochastic modeling techniques, reservoir attributes were visualized in three dimensions, and probability distribution functions as well as confidence intervals for different geological parameters were derived through geological statistics. Building upon this foundation, a dual-layer geological model incorporating multiple factors was established using Comet3.0 numerical simulation software. Monte Carlo simulation methods were then employed to simulate the effects of various geological parameters on gas production, yielding corresponding simulation results. Through normalization processes, parameter sensitivity was analyzed to determine the primary controlling factors influencing production capacity. The results show that the thickness of the No. 5 coal seam in the Hanchengbei Block is mainly distributed in the range of 1.35–6.89 m; the gas content is 10.28–15.52 m3/t; and the permeability is 0.014–0.048 mD. Under their joint influence, the average gas production of Hanchengbei Block is between 310–720 m3/d. The main factors affecting the capacity of Hanchengbei Block are the thickness and gas content of the coal seam. This study can provide a basis for the subsequent optimization of favorable areas, the formulation of drainage systems, and the design and optimization of development well networks. Removal of trace impurities for natural gas purification coupled with waste gas conversion is highly desired in industry. We here report a type of porous ionic liquids (PILs) that can realize the continuous flow separation of CH4/CO2/H2S and the conversion of the captured H2S to useful products. The PILs are synthesized through a step‐by‐step surface modification of ionic liquids (ILs) onto UiO‐66‐OH nanocrystals. The introduction of free tertiary amine groups on the nanocrystal surface endows these PILs with an exceptional ability to enrich H2S from CO2 and CH4 with impressive selectivity, while the permanent pores of UiO‐66‐OH act as containers to store an exceptionally higher amount of the selectively captured H2S than the corresponding nonporous ILs. Simultaneously, the tertiary amines as dual functional moieties offer effective catalytic sites for the conversion of the H2S stored in PILs into 3‐mercaptoisobutyric acid, a key intermediate required for the synthesis of Captopril (an antihypertensive drug). Molecular dynamics, density functional theory calculations and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations help understand both the mechanisms of separation and catalysis performance, confirming that the tertiary amines as well as the permanent pores in UiO‐66‐OH play vital roles in the whole procedure. Due to high stress, high ground temperature, high moisture, and other factors in deep mines, the risk of coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) is enhanced, seriously affecting the safety of coal mining. To achieve early prediction of spontaneous combustion in the No. 3 coal seam at the Juye coalfield in the deep mine, this paper employs a temperature-programmed device to analyze the changing pattern of single-index gases and composite gas indices with temperature derived from the gas produced during csc. It also optimizes the index gas of coal sample spontaneous combustion. Simultaneously, the characteristics of coal temperature and a four-level warning indicator system for CSC are determined based on the analysis of indicator gas growth rate method, carbon-to-oxygen ratio, and the characteristics of the indicator gas. The composite index gases of the No. 3 coal seam in Juye coalfield are selected in the initial oxidation stage (Rco), accelerated oxidation stage (R1, G1), intense oxidation stage (R2, G1, G3), and oxidative decomposition stage (G3). This leads to the construction of a six-level warning system consisting of initial warning value, blue, yellow, orange, red, and black levels. Meanwhile, warning thresholds are also established. Objective The application of amine method gas desulfurization process in a natural gas purification plant was prone to producing solution pollution, foaming, and other issues. The introduction of mechanical filtration and MDEA ion exchange purification and reactivation technology partly alleviated the problem of solution oxidation degradation pollution. However, mature application experience has not yet been formed for the removal of organic impurities that are prone to foaming in the solution, such as hydrocarbons and surfactants. In order to solve the problems of organic impurity pollution and frequent foaming of desulfurization amine solution in the middle and later stages of gas field development, experimental research was conducted on the removal technology of hydrocarbon impurities in amine solution. Methods The activated carbon adsorption experiments and foaming performance evaluation of amine solution were carried out, and the optimal activated carbon suitable for natural gas purification was selected. Results The results of filtration experiments and foaming experiments of activated carbon materials indicated that coconut shell activated carbon had a better adsorption effect. Coconut shell activated carbon with higher iodine value and smaller particles had a higher adsorption effect. However, too small particle size would bring secondary pollution to amine solution, resulting in increased risk of downstream pipeline blockage. According to the comparison of the turbidity of amine solution, oil removal rate and foaming experiment results before and after filtration, the coconut shell activated carbon with 30-40 mesh（380-550 μm） and iodine value of 1 142 mg/g was selected from the samples sent by the manufacturer as the filter material for removing hydrocarbon impurities from the amine solution for desulfurization of natural gas in gas field. Conclusions The coconut shell activated carbon with appropriate iodine value and strength was preferred as the activated carbon filter element material for natural gas desulfurization amine solution, and a mechanical filter was added downstream to further remove mechanical impurities and activated carbon powder in the solution and reduce the foaming frequency of solution pollution. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis of the carbon footprint of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), including direct and indirect emissions from utilities, logistics and purchases, as well as a discussion about the commonly used method. Emissions are presented in three scopes (scope 1 reports direct process emissions, scope 2 reports emissions from purchased energy and scope 3 reports indirect emissions from the value chain) to identify carbon emission hotspots within the university's operations. Design/methodology/approach: The carbon footprint was calculated using physical and monetary activity data, applying a process and economic input-output analysis. Findings: TU Delft's total carbon footprint in 2018 is calculated at 106 ktCO2eq. About 80% are indirect (scope 3) emissions, which is in line with other studies. Emissions from Real estate and construction, Natural gas, Equipment, ICT and Facility services accounted for about 64% of the total footprint, whereas Electricity, Water and waste-related carbon emissions were negligible. These findings highlight the need to reduce universities' supply chain emissions. Originality/value: A better understanding of carbon footprint hotspots can facilitate strategies to reduce emissions and finally achieve carbon neutrality. In contrast to other work, it is argued that using economic input-output models to calculate universities' carbon footprints is a questionable practice, as they can provide only an initial estimation. Due to the insufficient accurate evaluation model of gas resources in abandoned mines, the development and utilization of abandoned mine gas resources in China are still in the preliminary exploration stage. To this end, in response to the problem of imprecise assessment of gas resource reserves in the adsorbed state of residual coal, the No. 3 coal seam in Jincheng mine was used as the research object, by analyzing the evolution of the ambient gas pressure and temperature of the residual coal in the abandoned mine, and simulating the pressure and temperature environment in which the residual coal is located, the gas adsorption experiment of the residual coal was carried out in this environment, and a gas storage model of the residual coal was constructed with the combination of the adsorption theory. The results show that pressure has a positive effect on gas adsorption by residual coal, while temperature has a negative effect on it. The adsorption potential gradually decreases with increasing pressure and increases with increasing temperature, while the adsorption space increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature. The adsorption characteristic curves obtained by the two methods are temperature independent and polynomial in shape, and the fitted correlation coefficient of method 1 is generally higher than that of method 2. The adsorption characteristic curves of two methods are best fitted at k = 2.5 , so the value of k is most appropriately taken as 2.5 when calculating the virtual saturation vapour pressure. The average relative errors between the predicted and measured values of method 1 and 2 were 2.98% and 7.13%, respectively. The prediction effect of method 1 was significantly better than that of method 2 and met the requirements of engineering applications; therefore, method 1 was used to establish a model for the adsorbed gas storage capacity of residual coal in abandoned mines. The paper analyses results of spatio-temporal radiological risk assessment scenarios based on existing in-situ long-term monitoring data from a natural gas processing plant to analyse the effect of different input data on the assessment outcome. The ERICA Assessment Tool was used to estimate the dose rates to biota and potential impacts due to the exposure to ionising radiation. The input data for radiological risk assessment scenarios included annual data on activity concentration of radionuclides in soil from in-situ measurements performed from 1994 to 2016 and laboratory gamma-spectrometric data related to the period from 2014 to 2019. Predicted total dose rate to biota was generally below the ERICA Tool's screening dose rate of 10/iGyh-1 or slightly above, with the highest total dose rate estimated for lichen and bryophytes. Total dose rates to lichen and bryophytes in the studied period show certain temporal variation, but a specific trend was not detected. Estimated total dose rates to biota from different assessment scenarios were below internationally proposed reference levels for which no detrimental effects are expected. The overall potential radiological risk to terrestrial biota from the operation of the natural gas processing plant was found to be negligible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective The aim is to develop the treatment technology for the amine solution purification (APU) unit wastewater from the Cansolv exhaust gas treatment device, which is characterized with high concentration of salinity, organic matter and reducing sulfur and would affect the stable operation of the water treatment system. Methods The water quality characteristics of Venturi and APU wastewater from two natural gas purification plants were analyzed in detail. The complex compositions of APU wastewater were the key factors to affect the stable operation of the water treatment system. Various advanced oxidation technologies including ozone (O3), O3 coupled catalyst, and the mixture of ozone/hydrogen peroxide (O3/H2O2), were used to treat APU wastewater. The degradation effect of organic matter was evaluated by the changes in chemical oxygen demand (COD) content and total organic carbon (TOC) content in the wastewater. The causes of reverse osmosis membrane fouling blockage and the O3/H2O2 degradation mechanism of organic matter were studied. Results O3/H2O2 was the optimum method to remove organic matter from wastewater when the O3 concentration was 22 500 mg/L in 200 mL wastewater, H2O2 dosage was 2 mL and reaction time was 60 min, the best treatment effection was achieved, and the COD removal rate was 60.8%. Conclusions The O3/H2O2 oxidation can completely remove the reducing sulfur and effectively reduce the organic matter content in APU wastewater, furthermore solve fouling and blocking problems of the membrane concentrator and evaporation crystallization unit. Objective Aiming at the operation characteristics of sulfur recovery tail gas treatment unit in natural gas purification. plant and the advantages and disadvantages of the existing process, an tail gas treatment process that can adapt to small and medium-sized and large changes in working conditions is proposed. Methods The alkali liquor desulfurization process was applied to the sulfur recovery tail gas treatment in the natural gas purification plant. and measures such as tail gas NaOH alkali washing "scrubber + desulfurization tower" double tower combined desulfurization. the optimization of incinerator structure, and improvement of sodium sulfate product index were taken. Results The SO2 mass concentration in tail gas was 10-268 mg/m³ after alkali liquor desulfurization, which met the requirements of GB 39728-2020 Emission standard of air pollutants for onshore oil and gas exploitation and production industry, and the by-product sodium sulfate met the requirements of qualified products and was directly exported. Nowadays, sulfur is considered one of the primary resources of the chemical industry, most of which is produced as a refinery by-product during the processing of oil and natural gas. Sulfur production volumes are increasing every year, while the demand for it does not always match the growing supply, which leads to a serious problem of sulfur surplus in the world market. Granulated sulfur -- the main commercial type of elemental sulfur -- is transported in large quantities both by land and sea and can have a negative impact on the environment. At the moment, the issue of the negative impact of granulated sulfur on the environment has not been fully studied, which determines the relevance of this research. This review article presents the global market of granulated sulfur, paying attention to its safe transport -- from the producer to the consumer. The potentially harmful factors of the impact of sulfur handling on elements of the natural environment, such as atmospheric air, water reservoirs, soil and vegetation, were also taken into account. The flowrate measurement of the gas–liquid two-phase flow frequently observed in industrial equipment, such as in heat exchangers and reactors, is critical to enable the precise monitoring and operation of the equipment. Furthermore, certain applications, such as oil and natural gas processing plants, require the accurate measurements of the flowrates of each phase simultaneously. This study presents a method that can simultaneously measure the volumetric flowrates of each phase of gas and liquid two-phase mixtures, Qg and Ql, respectively, without separating the phases. The method employs a turbine flowmeter and two pressure sensors connected to the pipes upstream and downstream of the turbine flowmeter. By measuring the rotational speed of the rotor and the pressure loss across the flowmeter, the flowrate of the two-phase mixtures Qtp = (Qg + Ql) and the gas volumetric flowrate ratio β = (Qg/Qtp) are determined. The values of Qg and Ql are calculated as βQtp and (1 − β)Qtp. This study also investigates the measurement accuracies for air–water two-phase flows at 0.67 × 10−3 ≤ Qtp ≤ 1.67 × 10−3 m3/s and β ≤ 0.1, concluding that the full-scale accuracies of Qtp, β, Qg, and Ql are 3.1%, 4.8%, 3.9%, and 3%, respectively. These accuracies either match or improve the accuracies of similar methods reported in the literature, indicating that the proposed method is a viable solution for the determination of phase-specific flowrates in gas–liquid two-phase mixtures. A significant part of the population in Serbia relies on central heating systems during the winter months, with around fifty heating plants in operation across the country. Common fuels used in these plants primarily include fossil fuels such as fuel oil and natural gas. Combustion of some of these fuels leads to significant emissions of air pollutants. This study evaluates the impact on the air quality of the two heating boilers at the Valjevo city, Serbia, heating plant. Air emissions were measured separately for two heating boilers in the facility using standard reference methodology. The AERMOD air dispersion model was used to estimate the dispersion of various pollutants. A combination of topographical and meteorological data was used to set up a receptor grid exposed to air pollution within a 10 km radius around the heating plant. It was found that the resulting distribution and concentration gradient of pollutant gases and particles were less inclined towards the city center and instead spread eastwards into the surrounding villages. The health risk from the fuel oil boiler was shown to be significantly higher than that caused by the natural gas-fuelled boiler. Nevertheless, the calculated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks were within acceptable limits. The gas pressure in the main network of transmission lines is about 700 to 1000 psi (4826.33 to 6894.76 kPa), which is reduced to 250 psi (1723.69 kPa) at the entrance station of a city. This reduction process, which occurs in the regulator, causes a severe drop in gas temperature. The drop in the gas temperature produces hydrates and even causes the water vapor in the gas to freeze. As a result, there is a possibility that the passage of gas in the regulator is blocked and the gas flow is cut off. By employing heaters (indirect water heaters), the temperature of the gas entering the regulator can be preheated to eliminate the possibility of freezing in the regulator. This heater is fueled with natural gas and it operates for 24 hr a day, especially in the cold seasons. Therefore, one of the main challenges in using this type of heater is its high fuel consumption. Consequently, researchers are looking for a solution to reduce the fuel consumption (natural gas) of gas heaters. In this paper, the heat transfer and fluid flow in a heater of a natural gas pressure reduction plant, the Aliabad Power Plant (Iran), are numerically investigated using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS FLUENT 18.2. The considered heater consists of three parts, including (i) gas coils, (ii) a water bath (shell), and (iii) a fire tube. The indirect heat transfer process takes place between the hot liquid flow in the fire tube (combustion exhaust) and the cold liquid flow (natural gas) using the natural convection flows generated in the water bath. Numeric modeling is performed for four different gas mass flows, including 6 × 104, 8 × 104, 1 × 105, and 12 × 105 standard cubic meters per hour (or 16.67, 22.22, 27.78, and 33.33 m3/s). The results indicate that the natural gas outlet temperature achieved to a temperature higher than required. By installing a regulator on the burner, the gas consumption can be reduced, resulting in station cost savings, and also reducing the environmental impacts. The outcomes depict that the maximum possible reductions in monthly gas consumption and economic savings in the proposed system are 67,500 m3 and IRR 25 million at a gas mass flow rate of 60,000 SCMH.
