Scholars have documented harm associated with positive stereotypes about groups that experience inequality. We surveyed five samples from the United States to explore antecedents to dominant group endorsement of positive stereotypes about women, gay men, Asian Americans, Black Americans, and Native Americans. We found more liberal participants, and those with more close contact with members of these groups, were more internally motivated to respond without prejudice, which was then associated with greater endorsement of positive stereotypes about women, gay men, Black Americans, and Native Americans. In contrast, more conservative participants were more likely to believe in system legitimacy, which was then associated with greater endorsement of positive stereotypes about women and Asian Americans. We theorize that positive stereotypes are used by dominant group members in divergent ways, sometimes to legitimate inequality and other times with concern about inequality. To examine how light skin, especially among Indian women, has powerful social capital, this essay exhumes the politics of colorism and female identity that is palpably present in both cultural and literary discourses of the twentieth century. It aims to uphold three goals: one, by engaging with anthropological and historical readings, establish the prevalence of colorism in colonial and postcolonial India; two, by highlighting epidermal hierarchies within popular Indian culture, address how skin color has inevitably governed women's personal and professional lives; and three, by harnessing the subversive potential in select works of twentieth century Indian writers--Santa Chatterjee, Munshi Premchand, K. Saraswathi Amma, Kamala Markandaya, and Arundhati Roy--who hail from various cultural and geographic backgrounds, demonstrate how the supremacy of light skin is a pan-Indian phenomenon that needs to be resisted. In March 1866, the Sicangu (Brulé) Lakota chief Spotted Tail brought the body of his seventeen- or eighteen-year-old daughter, Mni-Akuwin, to Fort Laramie. She had died somewhere in the Powder River country. Before she died, she had asked her father to bury her among the Whites at the fort. Her subsequent scaffold burial in the post cemetery was an unusual mix of military display, Christian rites, and Lakota traditions; and the events surrounding it became a dramatic episode in the story of Native-White relations and western settlement. Almost 140 years later she was memorialized at the fort, a National Park Service site, as a symbol of racial reconciliation. The story of Mni-Akuwin has been told and retold many times through the years, often as a romantic tragedy comparable to the story of early Jamestown and the much-celebrated Pocahontas. The two Native women had a surprising amount in common, including what we know and don't know about them, what has been ascribed to their motives, and how they have been championed as defenders of European colonists and non-Native settlers. Indian princess mythology, with its insistence on innocence, purity, romantic purpose, and tragedy, has been vital to the persistence of this view—a perspective that has often put reconciliation in the service of White supremacy, dispossession, and rejection of Native culture. The article is a report from the Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP), which aims to address the underrepresentation of minority groups in economics. The report provides data on the representation of underrepresented minorities in economics degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels, comparing it to representation in STEM fields and the general population. Background: Dietary interventions are used for the treatment of hypertension. We evaluated the cost-efficacy of delivering boxes of healthy, culturally tailored foods and checks that can only be spent on produce in a Native American population. Methods: We conducted a group randomized controlled trial from 2018 to 2020 with N = 2 treatment counties and N = 2 control counties and a total of N = 160 Native American adults with baseline stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension. Participants in the intervention group received monthly boxes of food that adheres to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet as well as checks that could only be spent on produce for 6 months. We measured blood pressure and quality of life at baseline and at a 6-month follow-up in both intervention and control groups. We used ordered logistic regression to estimate the effect of treatment on probability of blood pressure improvements. We then conducted a cost-efficacy analysis. Results: We found that treatment was effective in reducing blood pressure in women with stage 1 hypertension at baseline. Based on this finding, we also estimate that this intervention satisfies normative cost-effectiveness thresholds, even when lifetime treatment is needed to preserve the impact, so long as treatment is only continued in those who respond to treatment. Conclusions: Direct delivery of healthy foods and checks that can only be spent on produce are a potentially cost-effective intervention for the management of hypertension among Native American women with stage 1 hypertension. Purpose: In the United States (US), deaths during pregnancy and childbirth have increased over the past 2 decades compared to other high-income countries, and there have been reports that racial disparities in maternal mortality have widened. The study objective was to examine recent trends in maternal mortality in the US by race. Methods: Our population-based cross-sectional study used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2000–2019 "Birth Data" and "Mortality Multiple Cause" data files from the US to calculate maternal mortality during pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium across race. Logistic regression models estimated the effects of race on the risk of maternal mortality and examined temporal changes in risk across race. Results: A total of 21,241 women died during pregnancy and childbirth, with 65.5% caused by obstetrical complications and 34.5% by non-obstetrical causes. Black women, compared with White women, had greater risk of maternal mortality (OR 2.13, 95% CI 2.06–2.20), as did American Indian women (2.02, 1.83–2.24). Overall maternal mortality risk increased during the 20-year study period, with an annual increase of 2.4 and 4.7/100,000 among Black and American Indian women, respectively. Conclusions: Between 2000 and 2019, maternal mortality in the US increased, overall and especially in American Indian and Black women. This paper estimates the migratory and fertility effects of the federal Relocation Program, which attempted to move Native American individuals to urban areas under the promises of financial assistance and job training. I find the Relocation Program increased the Native American population in the target cities by more than 100,000 people. I also find that second- and third-generation Native American women living in cities have a 50 percent lower fertility rate than those living in areas with historically large Native American populations. "Six Pioneer Accounts of Life on the Old North-West American Frontier, 1790–1850: A Critical Reading" by Franklin E. The phenomenon of widespread genetic ancestry testing has raised questions about its social impact, particularly on issues of race. Some accounts suggest testing can promote bridging social capital – connections between racial groups. In this multi-method paper, we ask whether (1) taking genetic ancestry tests (GATs) and (2) receiving results of African, Asian, or Native American ancestry increases network racial diversity for White Americans. We use a randomized controlled trial of 802 White, non-Hispanic Americans, half of whom received GATs. Unexpected findings show that test-takers' network racial diversity decreases after testing. Using 58 follow-up interviews, we develop and test a possible theory, finding initial evidence that test-takers' network racial diversity declines because they reconsider their racial appraisals of others in their networks. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of breastfeeding initiation and continuation at two months postpartum in American Indian (AI) mothers in South Dakota and to identify factors associated with breastfeeding. Using logistic regression, data from the South Dakota Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System were used to investigate the relationship between binary breastfeeding initiation and continuation outcomes and maternal behaviors and experiences including access to health care, safe sleep practices, ability to handle life events, depression, and sources of breastfeeding information. Higher odds of initiation were seen for factors including access to health care services, ability to handle life events, and sources of breastfeeding information, while lower odds were seen for factors including safe sleep. Higher odds of continuation were seen among mothers who reported not taking long to get over setbacks and among mothers who reported no postpartum depression, while lower odds of continuation were seen among mothers practicing safe sleep. Several modifiable factors were identified as reasons for stopping breastfeeding. This information about factors associated with higher odds of breastfeeding initiation and continuation at two months postpartum can be used to inform interventions, programs, and policies designed to support breastfeeding among AI women and to guide future research in this area. Haaland v. Brackeen rejected federalism-based challenges to the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) but signaled receptivity to future challenges based on individual rights. The adult-focused rights claims presented in Haaland, however, miss the mark of what is truly problem - atic about ICWA. This Article presents an in-depth, children's-rights based critique of the Act, explaining how it violates a fundamental right against state exertion of power over central aspects of persons' private lives to their den-iment for illicit purposes. In fact, the Act's defenders are complicit in the same sort of government violence that motivated ICWA's enactment-erasing aspects of children's heritage and experience incompatible with a state-preferred identity and destroying children's relationships and worlds in order to transform them in service to ideological and political aims, under the guise of child saving. Resistance literature’s significance to empower the weak cannot be overemphasized. This article examines “Beading Lesson” by Native American (NA) women author, Beth Piatote. The short fiction highlights the importance of NA women’s roles within their communities. Utilizing the Indigenous feminist framework, this study applies seven analytical categories of resistance by Baaz et al. and integrates Southwick et al.’s concepts of resilience to examine how the narrator navigates through historical trauma and hardships. In the narrative, issues such as tumultuous relations with the U.S. government, exploitation, incarceration, cultural erasure, and change of gender roles, are brought up in the story through the light-toned monologue of an aunt, the narrator, who is teaching her niece how to bead. Contrasted to this backdrop of historical trauma and adversities is the narrator’s resistance and resilience embedded in her everyday actions. The findings revealed that the narrator employs discreet and non-confrontational forms of resistance demonstrated through routine activities such as beading, teaching, storytelling, and engaging in powwow rituals. These seemingly ordinary activities are actually powerful acts of resistance as they assert the narrator’s original gender role as keeper of tradition within the context of NA culture. The narrator’s resilience is firmly grounded in her strong sense of identity as an NA woman. By engaging in various forms of resistance, she not only challenges the oppressive system but also helps foster collective resilience in her community. As resistance literature, this short fiction reveals the multifaceted forms of resistance and resilience within NA communities.

Race and gender differences in the quality of one's health care encounters are widely documented, but few studies explore the multiplicative impacts of race and gender. Drawing on intersectionality frameworks, we contrast white, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American men's and women's perceptions of disrespectful treatment from health care providers and staff (e.g., receptionists, clerks) in low-income health settings. Data are from the 2014 Health Center Patient Survey (N = 5385), a nationally representative survey of community-dwelling patients receiving care at health centers funded through Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act. Our results show race and sex differences in the study outcomes, yet weak support for intersectional effects. Asian and Native American patients report more disrespectful treatment from providers, relative to other ethnic groups. Women are more likely than men to report disrespectful treatment from staff. Asians also report disrespectful treatment from staff. Health care providers and staff may require training focused on the distinctive needs of Asian patients, for whom "saving face" may be a salient goal. Structural changes to reduce wait times and employ medical interpreters to ensure clear communication, and staff training focused on verbal and nonverbal communication may mitigate against actions perceived as disrespectful in low-income health settings. The Ohlone, the original settlers of the San Francisco region, were violently dispossessed by successive colonial regimes, first Spanish, then US American. The colonial trauma was written out of history, and by the 20th century anthropologists pronounced the Ohlone to be 'extinct'. In this article, I explore how the dispossession of the Ohlone haunt one of the greatest movies of all time: Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958). Although Vertigo is one of the most-analysed films ever, no one has noticed that Carlotta Valdes – the dispossessed woman who comes back from the dead to take possession of the living – would have been Native American. This article examines California Spanish-Mexican and Indigenous women's counternarratives and critiques of U.S. geopolitical conquest in the former Catholic Spanish and Mexican northwest. California women's testimonios (oral accounts) and written observations in the nineteenth century repudiated the notion that the West under Spanish and Mexican rule had not already undergone imperial projects of cultural civilization and political progress. They questioned the validity of Anglo assertions of cultural superiority, honor, and progress. While their testimonies reveal parallels between Anglo and Spanish-Mexican aims in colonizing California, these women offer unique perspectives of geopolitical conquest in the age of Manifest Destiny and U.S. imperialism. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) were reported to influence immunological activity. As endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC), these pollutants may disrupt normal thyroid function and act as catalysts for development of autoimmune thyroid disease by directly and indirectly affecting levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAbs). Native American communities are disproportionately exposed to harmful toxicants and are at an increased risk of developing an autoimmune disease. The aim of this study was to determine the association between POPs and TPOAbs in serum obtained from Native American women. This assessment was used to measure whether increased risk of autoimmune thyroid disease occurred as a result of exposure to POPs. Data were collected from 183 Akwesasne Mohawk women, 21–38 years of age, between 2009 and 2013. Multivariate analyses were conducted to determine the association between toxicant exposure and levels of TPOAbs. In multiple logistic regression analyses, exposure to PCB congener 33 was related to elevated risk of individuals possessing above normal levels of TPOAbs. Further, HCB was associated with more than 2-fold higher risk of possessing above normal levels of TPOAbs compared to women with normal levels of TPOAbs. p,p'-DDE was not associated with TPOAb levels within this study. Exposure to PCB congener 33 and HCB was correlated with above normal levels of TPOAbs, a marker of autoimmune thyroid disease. Settler colonialism has contributed to disproportionate reproductive health disparities for Indigenous people, however the majority of literature surrounding pregnancy, centers the experiences of White individuals. This paper uses data from a qualitative study exploring reproductive health of Indigenous persons from a United States Gulf Coast tribe to elucidate the pregnancy experiences of 31 tribal members. In interviews, participants described how and from whom they learned about pregnancy and birth, their experiences with miscarriage and complications during pregnancy, working during pregnancy and lack of post-partum or maternity leave, and generational changes in pregnancy. These findings highlight the impact of previous reproductive experiences and family support during pregnancy for women from this tribe. Background: Examining temporal and spatial diffusion of a new technology, such as digital mammography, can provide important insights into potential disparities associated with access to new medical technologies and how quickly these technologies are adopted. Although digital mammography is currently a standard technology in the United States for breast cancer screening, its adoption and geographic diffusion, as medical facilities transitioned from film to digital units, has not been explored well. Methods: This study evaluated the geographic diffusion of digital mammography facilities from 2001 to 2014 in the contiguous United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) and estimated the geographic accessibility to this new technology for women aged ≥45 years at the census tract level within a 20‐minute drivetime by population density, rural/urban residence, and race/ethnicity. The number of mammography units by technology type (film or digital) and density per 10,000 women were also summarized. Results: The adoption of digital mammography advanced first in densely populated regions and last in remote rural areas. Overall, proportion of digital mammography units increased from 1.4% in 2001 to 94.6% in 2014, but since 2008, there was a decline in density of units from 2.31 per 10,000 women aged ≥45 years to 1.97 in 2014. In 2014, approximately 87% of women aged ≥45 years in the contiguous United States had accessibility to digital mammography, but this proportion was substantially lower for Native American women (67%) and rural residents (32%). Conclusion: Understanding the diffusion of and accessibility to digital mammography may help predict future medical technology diffusion and assess its role in geographic differences in cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this retrospective study, the changes from film to digital mammography in the United States from 2001‐2014 were examined and mapped; in addition, changes in geographic accessibility to digital mammography were evaluated for women aged ≥45 years at the census tract level, in respect to urban/rural residency, population density, and race/ethnicity. The geographic diffusion of digital mammography progressed unevenly throughout the United States, and by 2014, 87% of all women aged ≥45 years were living within a 20‐minute drive from a digital mammography facility, but this percentage was substantially lower for Native American women (67%) and rural residents (32%). The conference focuses on diverse themes, including the need to nativize English for Indian creative expression, the representation of Indian women characters in literature, and the challenges faced by postcolonial feminism.

Twin Territories was a newspaper in Indian Territory from 1898 to 1905 that included the latest regional news, historical information about various tribes, and the column "What the Curious Want to Know." It also incorporated a variety of photographs of American Indian women, portraits of officials, and landmarks. The newspaper actively sustained a national audience. Ora Eddleman Reed understood her role as an editor in Indian Territory in part as a responsibility to correct inaccurate, dangerous representations of Natives people in the US. In addition to countering stereotypes of women, Twin Territories troubled visions of a backwards civilization, offering instead a portrait of Cherokee people as members of a burgeoning capitalist economy. While concentrating on a particular vision of Indian Territory as a modern, developing space, I seek to place Twin Territories in context as an Indian Territory newspaper of the turn of the twentieth century and to study its key features, including the advice column, its short fiction, and the photographic column, "Portraits of Indian Girls." Such representation is all the more complicated by Eddelman Reed's connection to the Cherokee community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reported breast cancer screening among American Indian women is consistently below that of White women. The last claims-based trends were from 1991 to 2001. This study updates mammography trends for American Indian women and examines the impact of race, urbanicity, and income on long-term mammography use. This was a multi-year (2005−2019), retrospective study of women aged 40−89 years using a 5% sample of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries residing in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Washington. This study used multivariable logistic regression to examine the impact of urbanicity and income on receiving mammography for American Indian women compared with that for White women. Analyses were conducted in 2022. Overall, annual age-adjusted mammography use declined from 205 per 1,000 in 2005 to 165 per 1,000 in 2019. The slope of these declines was significantly steeper (difference = −2.41, p <0.001) for White women (−3.06) than for American Indian women (−0.65). Mammography-use odds across all urbanicity categories were less for American Indian women than for White women compared with those of their respective metropolitan counterparts (e.g., rural: 0.96, 95% CI=0.77, 1.20 for American Indian women and 1.47, 99% CI=1.39, 1.57 for White women). Although residing in higher-income communities was not associated with mammography use for American Indian women, it was 31% higher for White women (OR=1.31, 99% CI=1.28, 1.34). The disparity in annual age-adjusted mammography use between American Indian and White women narrowed between 2005 and 2019. However, the association of urbanicity and community income on mammography use differs substantially between American Indian and White women. Although extensive documentation of the health disparities experienced by Native American peoples exists, little research explores experiences of members of non-federally recognized tribes who receive health care outside of the Indian Health Services (IHS) system. Additionally, positive factors that influence relationships between health care providers and tribal members are understudied and are needed to promote health care access. A qualitative descriptive methodologic approach was used to conduct semi structured life history interviews with 31 women who identified as members of a state-recognized, Gulf South Native American tribe. Results identified the following important themes: Do Participants Have a Regular Provider, Personal Relationship With Provider, Feel Provider Cares, Provider Addresses Concern, and Respect for Traditional or Holistic Medicine. These findings suggest health care providers play an important role in impacting the health care experiences of Native American tribal members. Native American groups in the United States experience extensive sexual and reproductive health disparities. However, the sexual health education and communication experiences of Native American groups are understudied. Thirty-one interviews were conducted with Native American women in the United States' Gulf Coast about their sexual and reproductive health experiences. Women reported the following themes: (a) Lack of Formal Sex Education; (b) Young Pregnancy; (c) Lack of Knowledge about HIV/STDs; (d) Lack of Communication about Menstruation; (e) Communication Experiences about Sexual and Reproductive Health; and (f) Stigma Around Discussing Sexual and Reproductive Topics. This article explores the study of labor in history and archaeology, focusing on the challenges of categorizing different forms of work. The contributors argue for a new approach that examines labor practices that defy easy categorization, revealing a messy past where different types of work and workers coexisted. The article also discusses the relationship between labor categories and historical theories, such as Marxism, and highlights the value accorded to labor in ancient societies. By applying the chaîne opératoire theory, archaeology reveals the cultural systems embedded in the process of making and challenges assumptions about separate labor categories. Published in 2019, I Reproduction on the Reservation i is the first book-length history of reproduction that centers Native American women.[2] It contends that in a nation like the United States, colonialism is a vital frame for understanding histories of reproduction. Native nations faced land dispossession, a forced sedentary lifestyle, malnutrition due to government neglect, and economic underdevelopment. Moreover, the ICWA has long been a target of opponents of tribal sovereignty, and a ruling in favor of the plaintiffs could undermine the nation-to-nation relationship between Native nations and the federal government. Even as the field of reproductive history dedicates greater attention to racial subjectivities and other forms of difference, attention to Native peoples and Indian Country remains limited; this relative absence persists despite Indigenous feminists' frequent engagement with the topics of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. Medical professionals of the modern era have begun incorporating energy healing as one of the supplements to modern medical treatment after noticing its merits. Many studies have been conducted to understand the benefits of these methods when utilized as complementary & alternative medicine (CAM) to modern medicine. Pranic Healing, an energy healing technique, is one such approach. This paper aims to review the existing research on Pranic Healing (PH), and Twin Heart Meditation (MTH) to assess their effectiveness and applicability as adjuvant therapeutic techniques. This paper acknowledges the effectiveness of PH and MTH and makes an effort to respond to the research questions provided. From the review, it could be concluded that Pranic healing can potentially treat various illnesses in the Indian population and among women. It was also found that MTH predicts positive mental health outcomes. This essay uses the brief archival glimpses we get of Metawney, a Muscogee (Creek) Indian woman, to illustrate how Muscogee women shaped their world and the Native and American Souths more generally throughout the eighteenth century. From Creation Stories and gendered labor roles to the female dimensions of politics and trade, women like Metawney were central players within every element of the Muscogee world, including Muscogee interactions with Europeans, for they were the "life-givers" whose very lives, labor, and experiences fundamentally shaped the eighteenth-century Muscogee world. This is despite the fact that Europeans rarely bothered to document the gendered contours of the Muscogee world, an archival legacy that continues to hinder scholars' understandings of Indigenous women in early America. Finally, I link this archival erasure of Metawney and other women like her to the current epidemic of violence against Native American women in the United States and Canada, i.e. the violence that has prompted the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls movement. This essay introduces the cluster, "Indigenizing the Eighteenth-Century American South," and shows how its contributions embody the ways in which Native American history and its study continue to reshape our understandings of the American South and the eighteenth century more broadly. The most predominant thread connecting the essays is that of gender, specifically how gender roles and contrasting ideas of femininity and masculinity informed and determined the interactions between Native Peoples and Euro-Americans within the eighteenth century South. Another theme running through the cluster is the longue durée , connecting the deep history of the American South and its peoples to the gendered colonialism that continues to shape the lives of Native American communities today. Altogether, these essays push the envelope of scholars' understandings of the American South and the eighteenth century by privileging and recentering Native epistemologies and practices at the heart of their work and reminding scholars of the explanatory power that Indigenous peoples, their histories, and their stories can provide for seeing into the eighteenth-century past. The purposes of the current study are two-fold. First, we examine how ACEs influence being a victim of IPV coercive control among Native American (n = 92) and non-Native American (n = 263) justice-involved women using data from the 2014 Oklahoma Study of Mother's and Their Children. Second, because little research exists on these relationships, we explore how these patterns may vary among Native American and non-Native American women. Our findings suggest that there is not only a clear link between ACEs and coercive control among justice-involved women, but also that these relationships vary between Native American and non-Native American women. Background: Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) do not undergo breast and cervical cancer screening at the same rate as women without IDD. IDDs are diagnosed in childhood, are lifelong, and involve difficulties in adaptive behaviors and intellectual functioning. Native American women also experience disparities in breast and cervical cancer screenings. Despite known disparities, women with IDD are often not included in health promotion programs, and there is a need for evidence-based programming for those with intersectional identities, such as Native American women with IDD. Objective: This study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of My Health My Choice (MHMC), an adaptation of the Women Be Healthy 2 program. There are 2 parts to the study: adaptation of the Women Be Healthy 2 program and feasibility and acceptability testing of MHMC. Methods: Individuals aged over 18 years who identify as Native American females with IDD and their caregivers (N=30 women-caregiver dyads) are eligible for the study. Participants, who are affiliated with 2 partnering sites in Arizona (1 rural and 1 urban), complete pre- and postsurveys assessing knowledge, self-efficacy, and screening expectations before and immediately after completing the program. In addition, all participants complete brief satisfaction surveys after each of the 6 educational sessions. A subsample of Native American women with an IDD (n=12), caregivers (n=12), and community health educators (n=2) who participate in the MHMC program will provide semistructured qualitative input regarding the content, delivery, and cultural relevance of the program. Results: The adaptation of the culturally responsive MHMC program was completed in August 2021. In November 2021, the project team began recruitment for feasibility and acceptability studies. Feasibility will be examined using participation metrics, and acceptability will be measured using satisfaction measures. Pre- and postmeasures in cancer screening knowledge, self-efficacy, and screening expectations will examine improvements among participants.
