These patients include groups of disadvantaged people (elderly, patients with disabilities and serious medical conditions) who are usually excluded from clinical trials. As a consequence, most of the data about the efficacy and safety of a drug in these patients derives from post-marketing experiences. In this context, the aim of our study was to retrospectively investigate the effectiveness and safety of tralokinumab in the management of AD in SPs.Methods: A 24-weeks retrospective, dual-center study was performed enrolling patients with a diagnosis of moderate-to-severe AD undergoing treatment with tralokinumab at labelled dosage. Disease severity was assessed using Eczema Area Severity Index (EASI), Pruritus–Numerical Rating Scale (P-NRS), and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) score at baseline and after 4 weeks (W4), W16, and W24. Adverse events (AEs) were monitored at the same timepoints. Statistical significance of clinical improvement (EASI, P-NRS, DLQI) at week 4, week 16, and week 24 as compared with baseline was evaluated by using Student’s t-test, considering significant a p-value < 0.05.Results: Our study enrolling 27 SPs patients showed a significant improvement in EASI and P-NRS since week 4, continuing to improve up to week 24. Similarly, DLQI significantly decreases at each timepoint as compared with baseline. Finally, no AEs were reported during the study period. Of interest, our cohort included oncologic patients, a patient with a history of severe infection, as well as subjects affected by severe neurological, psychiatric, pulmonary, and/or cardiovascular disease.Discussion: Our experience showed that tralokinumab is effective and safe in elderly patients and subjects affected by severe comorbidities. Keywords: atopic dermatitis, special populations, treatment, tralokinumab, biologics

AbstractIn much of the current academic and public discussion, conspiracy theories are portrayed as a negative phenomenon, linked to misinformation, mistrust in experts and institutions, and political propaganda. Rather surprisingly, however, philosophers working on this topic have been reluctant to incorporate a negatively evaluative aspect when either analyzing or engineering the concept conspiracy theory. In this paper, we present empirical data on the nature of the concept conspiracy theory from five studies designed to test the existence, prevalence and exact form of an evaluative dimension to the ordinary concept conspiracy theory. These results reveal that, while there is a descriptive concept of conspiracy theory, the predominant use of conspiracy theory is deeply evaluative, encoding information about epistemic deficiency and often also derogatory and disparaging information. On the basis of these results, we present a new strategy for engineering conspiracy theory to promote theoretical investigations and institutional discussions of this phenomenon. We argue for engineering conspiracy theory to encode an epistemic evaluation, and to introduce a descriptive expression—such as ‘conspiratorial explanation’—to refer to the purely descriptive concept conspiracy theory.

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
In this paper PCA and D-PCA techniques are applied for the design of a Data Driven diagnostic Fault Isolation (FI) and Fault Estimation (FE) scheme for 18 primary sensors of a semi-autonomous aircraft. Specifically, Contributions-based, and Reconstruction-based Contributions approaches have been considered. To improve FI performance an inference mechanism derived from evidence-based decision making theory has been proposed. A detailed FI and FE study is presented for the True Airspeed sensor based on experimental data. Evidence Based Filtering (EBF) showed to be very effective particularly in reducing false alarms.

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
In-flight sensor fault diagnosis and recursive combination of residual signals via the Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory have been considered in this study. In particular, a novel evidence-based combination rule of residual errors as a function of a reliability measure derived from streaming data is proposed for the purpose of online robust sensors fault diagnosis. The proposed information fusion mechanism is divided into three steps. In the first step, the classic DS probability mass combination rule is applied; then, the difference between the previous posterior mass and the current prior mass associated with fault events is computed. Finally, the increment of the posterior mass of a fault event is weighted as a function of a reliability coefficient that depends on the norm of control activity. A Sensor Fault Isolation scheme based on the proposed combination rule has been worked out and compared with well-known state-of-the-art recursive combination rules. A quantitative analysis has been performed exploiting multi-flight data of a P92 Tecnam aircraft. The proposed approach showed to be effective, particularly in reducing the false alarms rate.

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. The various phases will rely on a common infrastructure and set of detectors., Comment: Letter of Intent submitted to CERN SPSC. Address all correspondence to hike-eb@cern.ch

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
Precise measurements of the branching ratios for the flavor-changing neutral current decays $K\to\pi\nu\bar{\nu}$ can provide unique constraints on CKM unitarity and, potentially, evidence for new physics. It is important to measure both decay modes, $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ and $K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$, since different new physics models affect the rates for each channel differently. The goal of the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is to measure the BR for the charged channel to within 10%. For the neutral channel, the BR has never been measured. We are designing the KLEVER experiment to measure BR($K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$) to $\sim$20% using a high-energy neutral beam at the CERN SPS starting in LHC Run 4. The boost from the high-energy beam facilitates the rejection of background channels such as $K_L\to\pi^0\pi^0$ by detection of the additional photons in the final state. On the other hand, the layout poses particular challenges for the design of the small-angle vetoes, which must reject photons from $K_L$ decays escaping through the beam exit amidst an intense background from soft photons and neutrons in the beam. Background from $\Lambda \to n\pi^0$ decays in the beam must also be kept under control. We present findings from our design studies for the beamline and experiment, with an emphasis on the challenges faced and the potential sensitivity for the measurement of BR($K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$)., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. - Abstract
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common inflammatory skin disease caused by delayed hypersensitivity to chemical and biotic contact allergens. ACD significantly affects the patients' quality of life negatively impacting both occupational and non-occupational settings. Patch testing is the gold standard diagnostic in vivo test to precise the ACD etiology and to correctly perform prevention. According to the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) legislative decree no. 178 of 29th May 1991, allergens are defined as medicines and therefore they are subject to strict regulation. In 2017, AIFA (decree no. 2130/2017) started a procedure to regulate contact allergens on the Italian market and actually the contact allergens temporarily authorized are reported in AIFA decree no. 98/2022, valid until November 2023. The availability on the market of contact allergens to diagnose ACD and continuous updating on the basis of new epidemiological trends are mandatory, jointly with the continuous update of the baseline and integrative series for patch testing. For this reason, the scientific community represented in Italy by the Skin Allergies Study Group of SIDeMaST (Italian Society of Dermatology and Venereology) and SIDAPA (Italian Society of Allergological, Occupational and Environmental Dermatology) are constantly working, in close relationship with the European scientific communities with large expertise in this important sector of the modern Dermatology. Herein, we report the setting up of regulatory legislation by AIFA and the new Italian Adult Baseline Series for patch testing.

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
$K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The quality of 2015 data acquired, in view of the final measurement, will be presented., Comment: proceeding of the conference New Trends in High-Energy Physics 2016

THEORY of knowledge , *STEREOTYPES , *ARGUMENT , *PREJUDICES - Abstract
In his book, Prejudice, Endre Begby offers a novel and engaging account of the epistemology of prejudice which challenges some of the standard assumptions that have so far guided the recent discussion on the topic. One of Begby's central arguments against the standard view of prejudice, according to which a prejudiced person necessarily displays an epistemically culpable resistance to counterevidence, is that, qua stereotype judgments, prejudices can be flexible and rationally maintained upon encountering many disconfirming instances. By expanding on Begby's analysis, I argue that, given the variety of truth conditions for true generic statements, the generic form of stereotype judgements can sometimes make prejudice extremely resistant to encounters with statistical facts about the distribution of the property among members of a certain group. At the same time, I argue that a more careful consideration of the generic form of stereotypes also allows us to recognize that evidence about how many members of the kind instantiate a property is not the only type of evidence which could disconfirm a prejudice. Evidence of no explanatory relation between a kind and a property should also have a direct effect on a prejudicial belief. For this reason, things may not look as dim for the standard view of prejudice in assessing paradigmatic instances of prejudicial beliefs as irrationally resistant to evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A retrospective study conducted in Italy analyzed data from 116 patients with severe atopic dermatitis (AD) to determine if the drug upadacitinib could improve symptoms of concomitant allergic rhinitis (AR) or allergic asthma (AA). The study found that after 16 weeks of treatment with upadacitinib, 81.9% of patients achieved a reduction of at least 75% in their AD symptoms, and 56.03% achieved a reduction of at least 90%. Upadacitinib also showed a slight improvement in symptoms of AA and AR. The study suggests that upadacitinib may have a beneficial impact on AA and AR symptoms in patients with severe AD, but further research is needed. [Extracted from the article]

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $\pi^0\pi^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description., Comment: XIIth International Conference on Heavy Quarks and Leptons 2014, Mainz, Germany

The design, construction and test of a charged particle detector made of scintillation counters read by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) is described. The detector, which operates in vacuum and is used as a veto counter in the NA62 experiment at CERN, has a single channel time resolution of 1.14 ns, a spatial resolution of ~2.5 mm and an efficiency very close to 1 for penetrating charged particles.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the $K_{e4}$ modes: $K_{e4}(+-)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and $K_{e4}(00)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. The results include a decay rate measurement and fits to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) description., Comment: Prepared for the Proceedings of "Moriond QCD and High Energy Interactions. Quantum Physics - Abstract
We report the generation of a macroscopic singlet state in a cold atomic sample via quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement induced spin squeezing. We observe 3 dB of spin squeezing and detect entanglement of up to $5.5\times10^5 $ atoms with $5\sigma$ statistical significance using a generalized spin squeezing inequality. The degree of squeezing implies at least 50% of the atoms have formed singlets, while the response to a magnetic field gradient indicates entanglement bonds at all length scales, a characteristic of quantum spin liquids., Comment: 7 figures, colour online

We study nonlinear interferometry applied to a measurement of atomic spin and demonstrate a sensitivity that cannot be achieved by any linear-optical measurement with the same experimental resources. We use alignment-to-orientation conversion, a nonlinear-optical technique from optical magnetometry, to perform a nondestructive measurement of the spin alignment of a cold $^{87}$Rb atomic ensemble. We observe state-of-the-art spin sensitivity in a single-pass measurement, in good agreement with covariance-matrix theory. Taking the degree of measurement-induced spin squeezing as a figure of merit, we find that the nonlinear technique's experimental performance surpasses the theoretical performance of any linear-optical measurement on the same system, including optimization of probe strength and tuning. The results confirm the central prediction of nonlinear metrology, that superior scaling can lead to superior absolute sensitivity., Comment: 5 figures

We describe a measurement-and-feedback technique to deterministically prepare low-entropy states of atomic spin ensembles. Using quantum non-demolition measurement and incoherent optical feedback, we drive arbitrary states in the spin-orientation space toward the origin of the spin space. We observe 12 dB of spin noise reduction, or a factor of 63 reduction in phase-space volume. We find optimal feedback conditions and show that multi-stage feedback is advantageous. An input-output calculation of quantum noise incorporating realistic quantum noise sources and experimental limitations agrees well with the observations. The method may have application to generation of exotic phases of ultracold gases, for example macroscopic singlet states and valence-bond solids., Comment: 4 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements improve sensitivity by evading measurement back-action. The technique was first proposed to detect mechanical oscillations in gravity wave detectors, and demonstrated in the measurement of optical fields, leading to the development of rigorous criteria to distinguish QND from similar non-classical measurements. Recent QND measurements of macroscopic material systems such as atomic ensembles, and mechanical oscillators, show some QND features, but not full QND character. Here we demonstrate certified QND measurement of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble. We observe quantum state preparation (QSP) and information-damage trade-off (IDT) beyond their classical limits by seven and twelve standard deviations, respectively. Our techniques complement recent work with microscopic systems, and can be used for quantum metrology and memory, the preparation and detection of non-gaussian states, and proposed quantum simulation and information protocols. They should enable QND measurements of dynamical quantum variables and the realization of QND-based quantum information protocols., Comment: 2 figures

The branching ratio (BR) for the decay K^+ \to \pi^+\nu\bar{\nu} is a sensitive probe for new physics. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS will measure this BR to within about 10%. To reject the background from dominant kaon decays with final state photons, the large-angle photon vetoes (LAVs) must detect photons of energy as low as 200 MeV with an inefficiency of less than 10^{-4}. The LAV detectors make use of lead glass blocks recycled from the OPAL electromagnetic calorimeter barrel. We describe the mechanical design and challenges faced during construction, the characterization of the lead glass blocks and solutions adopted for monitoring their performance, and the development of front-end electronics to allow simultaneous time and energy measurements over an extended dynamic range using the time over-threshold technique. Our results are based on test-beam data and are reproduced by a detailed Monte Carlo simulation that includes the readout chain., Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 11 attached .eps files. Quantum Physics - Abstract
We study theoretically and experimentally the quantification of non-Gaussian distributions via non-destructive measurements. Using the theory of cumulants, their unbiased estimators, and the uncertainties of these estimators, we describe a quantification which is simultaneously efficient, unbiased by measurement noise, and suitable for hypothesis tests, e.g., to detect non-classical states. The theory is applied to cold $^{87}$Rb spin ensembles prepared in non-gaussian states by optical pumping and measured by non-destructive Faraday rotation probing. We find an optimal use of measurement resources under realistic conditions, e.g., in atomic ensemble quantum memories.

Quantum Physics ,Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
We report the generation of spin squeezing and entanglement in a magnetically-sensitive atomic ensemble, and entanglement-enhanced field measurements with this system. A maximal Raman coherence is prepared in an ensemble of 8.5x10^5 laser-cooled Rb-87 atoms in the f=1 hyperfine ground state, and the collective spin is squeezed by synthesized optical quantum non-demolition measurement. This prepares a state with large spin alignment and noise below the projection-noise level in a mixed alignment-orientation variable. 3.2dB of noise reduction is observed and 2.0dB of squeezing by the Wineland criterion, implying both entanglement and metrological advantage. Enhanced sensitivity is demonstrated in field measurements using alignment-to-orientation conversion., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The branching ratio for the decay $K^+ \to \pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ is sensitive to new physics; the NA62 experiment will measure it to within about 10%. To reject the dominant background from channels with final state photons, the large-angle vetoes (LAVs) must detect particles with better than 1 ns time resolution and 10% energy resolution over a very large energy range. Our custom readout board uses a time-over-threshold discriminator coupled to a TDC as a straightforward solution to satisfy these requirements. A prototype of the readout system was extensively tested together with the ANTI-A2 large angle veto module at CERN in summer 2010., Comment: prepared for the TWEPP 2011 conference proceedings

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report the measurement of the ratio $\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0)$ analyzing a large sample of $\phi \to \eta \gamma$ decays recorded with the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+ e^-$ collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb$^{-1}$. The $\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma$ process is supposed to proceed both via a resonant contribution, mediated by the $\rho$ meson, and a non resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. The presence of the direct term affects the partial width value. Our result $R_{\eta}=\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma)/\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0)= 0.1838\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0030_{syst}$ is in agreement with a recent CLEO measurement, which differs by more 3 $\sigma$ from the average of previous results.

Quantum Physics ,Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
Quantum metrology studies the use of entanglement and other quantum resources to improve precision measurement. An interferometer using N independent particles to measure a parameter X can achieve at best the "standard quantum limit" (SQL) of sensitivity {\delta}X \propto N^{-1/2}. The same interferometer using N entangled particles can achieve in principle the "Heisenberg limit" {\delta}X \propto N^{-1}, using exotic states. Recent theoretical work argues that interactions among particles may be a valuable resource for quantum metrology, allowing scaling beyond the Heisenberg limit. Specifically, a k-particle interaction will produce sensitivity {\delta}X \propto N^{-k} with appropriate entangled states and {\delta}X \propto N^{-(k-1/2)} even without entanglement. Here we demonstrate this "super-Heisenberg" scaling in a nonlinear, non-destructive measurement of the magnetisation of an atomic ensemble. We use fast optical nonlinearities to generate a pairwise photon-photon interaction (k = 2) while preserving quantum-noise-limited performance, to produce {\delta}X \propto N^{-3/2}. We observe super-Heisenberg scaling over two orders of magnitude in N, limited at large N by higher-order nonlinear effects, in good agreement with theory. For a measurement of limited duration, super-Heisenberg scaling allows the nonlinear measurement to overtake in sensitivity a comparable linear measurement with the same number of photons. In other scenarios, however, higher-order nonlinearities prevent this crossover from occurring, reflecting the subtle relationship of scaling to sensitivity in nonlinear systems. This work shows that inter-particle interactions can improve sensitivity in a quantum-limited measurement, and introduces a fundamentally new resource for quantum metrology.

We have measured the cross section of the radiative process e+e- -> pi+pi-gamma with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAPHNE, from events taken at a CM energy W=1 GeV. Initial state radiation allows us to obtain the cross section for e+e- -> pi+pi-, the pion form factor |F_pi|^2 and the dipion contribution to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, Delta a_mu^{pipi} = (478.5+-2.0_{stat}+-5.0_{syst}+-4.5_{th}) x 10^{-10} in the range 0.1 < M_{pipi}^2 < 0.85 GeV^2, where the theoretical error includes a SU(3) ChPT estimate of the uncertainty on photon radiation from the final pions. The discrepancy between the Standard Model evaluation of a_mu and the value measured by the Muon g-2 collaboration at BNL is confirmed., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, revised treatment of FSR uncertainty, version to appear on Physics Letters B
