Abstract

Background Although napkin-ring sign (NRS) plaques assessed by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is identified as a high-risk feature, the detailed morphological features are still unknown. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the morphological features of the MDCT-assessed NRS using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Methods We evaluated 204 plaques in 193 patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome who were diagnosed using 128-slice MDCT and were assessed using IVUS prior to coronary intervention. Morphology was compared between plaques with and without MDCT-assessed NRS. Severe IVUS-assessed attenuation was defined as an attenuation angle > 180°. Results NRS was detected in 49 lesions. MDCT-assessed plaque attenuation was lower (p < 0.0001), and cross-sectional plaque areas at lesion sites, remodeling index, and the prevalence of positive remodeling were greater, in lesions with NRS (p < 0.005, p < 0.0001, and p < 0.0001, respectively). Furthermore, the IVUS-assessed remodeling index and prevalence of severe attenuation and speckled echo appearance were significantly greater in lesions with NRS (p < 0.01, p < 0.0001, and p < 0.0001, respectively). Using multivariate analysis, IVUS-assessed speckled echo appearance was identified as an independent predictor of MDCT-assessed NRS (odds ratio, 3.59; 95% confidence interval, 1.49–8.66; p < 0.005). Conclusion MDCT assessment of NRS may be associated with larger heterogeneous necrotic cores and greater positive remodeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates experimentally a tubular bonded butt specimen with relief grooves carved close to the adherend-adhesive interface. The specimen is used to assess the strength of a thin adhesive layer, as usually occurs in structural bonded joints. Hence, this configuration overcomes the problems related to the differences in chemical and mechanical properties which could occur in bulk adhesive tests. The aim is to verify experimentally the reduction of the stress concentrations at the interface given by the presence of the grooves, observed in a previous numerical work of the authors. Finite element analyses show that the groove geometry adopted here, although slightly simplified with respect to the optimum shape previously proposed, produces a strong reduction of the edge effects. This work performs an indirect assessment by comparing tensile strength of bonded specimens with and without relief grooves. A two-level factorial experimental campaign is performed, according to Design of Experiment criteria. The variables are: presence of the grooves, adherends material, and adhesive thickness. The response of the tests is the maximum tensile load carried by the specimen which is found to depend strongly on the adherends’ materials. In the case of steel joints, the relief grooves near the adherend-adhesive interface lead to higher loads regardless of the adhesive thickness. In the case of aluminium joints the relief grooves play a minor role, while tensile strength decreases as the adhesive thickness increases. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Napkin ring adhesion tests over a broad range of experimental conditions suggested a de-bonding mechanism for glassy thermosets associated with 'run-away' nonlinear viscoelasticity. Finite element analyses of these tests using a high fidelity, nonlinear constitutive equation were used to identify a single, scalar metric that consistently predicted the initiation of de-bonding, a critical value of the maximum principal strain in the 'interphase' zone.
