The multiphoton excitation pathways of plasmonic nanorod assemblies are described. By using dolmen structures formed from the directed assembly of three gold nanorods, plasmon-mediated three-photon excitation is resolved. These high-order multiphoton excitation channels were accessed by resonantly exciting a hybrid mode of the dolmen structure that was resonant with the 800-nm carrier wavelength of an ultrafast laser system. Rotation of the exciting field polarization to a non-resonant configuration did not generate third-order responses. Hence, the multiphoton excitation and resultant non-equilibrium electron distributions were generated by structure- and mode-selective excitation. Correlation between high-order and resonant plasmon excitation was achieved through sub-cycle time-resolved interferometric detection of incoherent nonlinear emission signals. The results illustrate the advantages of nonlinear optical interferometry and Fourier analysis for distinguishing plasmon-mediated processes from those that do not require plasmon excitation. We have used surface plasmon resonant metal gratings to induce and probe the dielectric response (i.e., electro-optic modulation) of ionic liquids (ILs) at electrode interfaces. Here, the cross-plane electric field at the electrode surface modulates the refractive index of the IL due to the Pockels effect. This is observed as a shift in the resonant angle of the grating (i.e., Δϕ), which can be related to the change in the local index of refraction of the electrolyte (i.e., Δnlocal). The reflection modulation of the IL is compared against a polar (D2O) and a non-polar solvent (benzene) to confirm the electro-optic origin of resonance shift. The electrostatic accumulation of ions from the IL induces local index changes to the gratings over the extent of electrical double layer (EDL) thickness. Finite difference time domain simulations are used to relate the observed shifts in the plasmon resonance and change in reflection to the change in the local index of refraction of the electrolyte and the thickness of the EDL. Simultaneously using the wavelength and intensity shift of the resonance enables us to determine both the effective thickness and Δn of the double layer. We believe that this technique can be used more broadly, allowing the dynamics associated with the potential-induced ordering and rearrangement of ionic species in electrode–solution interfaces. Exploring the plasmon energy dissipation mechanism of bimetallic nanostructures after photoexcitation is of great significance for controlling energy transfer in plasmonic applications. The absorption, scattering, and extinction spectra of Ag@Cu, Ag@Pt, and Ag@Co core–shell nanostructures are calculated by finite element method, and the energy dissipation process is visualized by using particle trajectory and the absorbed power density distribution. The absorption/scattering ratio of the core–shell nanostructures, the shell absorptivity, the time-domain electric field as well as the extra-core electron arrangements of Ag, Cu, Pt, and Co atoms are analyzed for figuring out the energy dissipation mechanism. The results show that when a non-plasmonic metal is coated on the surface of a plasmonic metal, the plasmon energy dissipates preferentially in the shell, and the degree of dissipation depends on the imaginary part of the dielectric constant of the shell and the core. A larger dielectric constant of the shell can cause more energy to be transferred from the plasmonic metal to the shell region. Recent discoveries in biology have highlighted the importance of protein and RNA-based condensates as an alternative to classical membrane-bound organelles. Here, we demonstrate the design of pure RNA condensates from nanostructured, star-shaped RNA motifs. We generate condensates using two different RNA nanostar architectures: multi-stranded nanostars whose binding interactions are programmed via linear overhangs, and single-stranded nanostars whose interactions are programmed via kissing loops. Through systematic sequence design, we demonstrate that both architectures can produce orthogonal (distinct and immiscible) condensates, which can be individually tracked via fluorogenic aptamers. We also show that aptamers make it possible to recruit peptides and proteins to the condensates with high specificity. Successful co-transcriptional formation of condensates from single-stranded nanostars suggests that they may be genetically encoded and produced in living cells. We provide a library of orthogonal RNA condensates that can be modularly customized and offer a route toward creating systems of functional artificial organelles for the task of compartmentalizing molecules and biochemical reactions.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are chronic, refractory wounds caused by diabetic neuropathy, vascular disease, and bacterial infection, and have become one of the most serious and persistent complications of diabetes mellitus because of their high incidence and difficulty in healing. Its malignancy results from a complex microenvironment that includes a series of unfriendly physiological states secondary to hyperglycemia, such as recurrent infections, excessive oxidative stress, persistent inflammation, and ischemia and hypoxia. However, current common clinical treatments, such as antibiotic therapy, insulin therapy, surgical debridement, and conventional wound dressings all have drawbacks, and suboptimal outcomes exacerbate the financial and physical burdens of diabetic patients. Therefore, development of new, effective and affordable treatments for DFU represents a top priority to improve the quality of life of diabetic patients. In recent years, nanozymes-based diabetic wound therapy systems have been attracting extensive interest by integrating the unique advantages of nanomaterials and natural enzymes. Compared with natural enzymes, nanozymes possess more stable catalytic activity, lower production cost and greater maneuverability. Remarkably, many nanozymes possess multienzyme activities that can cascade multiple enzyme-catalyzed reactions simultaneously throughout the recovery process of DFU. Additionally, their favorable photothermal-acoustic properties can be exploited for further enhancement of the therapeutic effects. In this review we first describe the characteristic pathological microenvironment of DFU, then discuss the therapeutic mechanisms and applications of nanozymes in DFU healing, and finally, highlight the challenges and perspectives of nanozyme development for DFU treatment.

Dental implant therapy, established as standard-of-care nearly three decades ago with the advent of microrough titanium surfaces, revolutionized clinical outcomes through enhanced osseointegration. However, despite this pivotal advancement, challenges persist, including prolonged healing times, restricted clinical indications, plateauing success rates, and a notable incidence of peri-implantitis. This review explores the biological merits and constraints of microrough surfaces and evaluates the current landscape of nanofeatured dental implant surfaces, aiming to illuminate strategies for addressing existing impediments in implant therapy. Currently available nanofeatured dental implants incorporated nano-structures onto their predecessor microrough surfaces. While nanofeature integration into microrough surfaces demonstrates potential for enhancing early-stage osseointegration, it falls short of surpassing its predecessors in terms of osseointegration capacity. This discrepancy may be attributed, in part, to the inherent dichotomy kinetics of osteoblasts, wherein increased surface roughness by nanofeatures enhances osteoblast differentiation but concomitantly impedes cell attachment and proliferation. We also showcase a controllable, hybrid micro-nano titanium model surface and contrast it with commercially-available nanofeatured surfaces. Unlike the commercial nanofeatured surfaces, the controllable micro-nano hybrid surface exhibits superior potential for enhancing both cell differentiation and proliferation. Hence, present nanofeatured dental implants represent an evolutionary step from conventional microrough implants, yet they presently lack transformative capacity to surmount existing limitations. Further research and development endeavors are imperative to devise optimized surfaces rooted in fundamental science, thereby propelling technological progress in the field.

Tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV)-like nanocarriers were designed for gene delivery to plant cells. High aspect ratio TMGMVs were coated with a polycationic biopolymer, poly(allylamine) hydrochloride (PAH), to generate highly charged nanomaterials (TMGMV-PAH; 56.20 ± 4.7 mV) that efficiently load (1:6 TMGMV:DNA mass ratio) and deliver single-stranded and plasmid DNA to plant cells. The TMGMV-PAH were taken up through energy-independent mechanisms in Arabidopsis protoplasts. TMGMV-PAH delivered a plasmid DNA encoding a green fluorescent protein (GFP) to the protoplast nucleus (70% viability), as evidenced by GFP expression using confocal microscopy and Western blot analysis. TMGMV-PAH were inactivated (iTMGMV-PAH) using UV cross-linking to prevent systemic infection in intact plants. Inactivated iTMGMV-PAH-mediated pDNA delivery and gene expression of GFP in vivo was determined using confocal microscopy and RT-qPCR. Virus-like nanocarrier-mediated gene delivery can act as a facile and biocompatible tool for advancing genetic engineering in plants.

The effects of isothermal annealing on the self-assembled nanostructures of spinel manganese oxide ZnMnGaO4 were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The checkerboard nanostructures and zigzag nanostructures (named "Sierra" nanostructures) coexisted owing to the chemical phase separation of Mn3+ and Ga3+ ions by isothermal annealing at 575 °C. It was observed that the checkerboard nanostructures were dominant in short-time annealing and that the volume fraction of the Sierra nanostructures became more prominent as the annealing period increase. The interdiffusion of Mn3+ and Ga3+ is indicated to play an important role in gaining the total energy of the system by the reduction in the local strain caused by the formation of nanostructures. Many experimental and computational efforts have sought to understand DNA origami folding, but the time and length scales of this process pose significant challenges. Here, we present a mesoscopic model that uses a switchable force field to capture the behavior of single- and double-stranded DNA motifs and transitions between them, allowing us to simulate the folding of DNA origami up to several kilobases in size. Brownian dynamics simulations of small structures reveal a hierarchical folding process involving zipping into a partially folded precursor followed by crystallization into the final structure. We elucidate the effects of various design choices on folding order and kinetics. Larger structures are found to exhibit heterogeneous staple incorporation kinetics and frequent trapping in metastable states, as opposed to more accessible structures which exhibit first-order kinetics and virtually defect-free folding. This model opens an avenue to better understand and design DNA nanostructures for improved yield and folding performance.

Circular dichroism (CD) spectra for pseudo-two-dimensional chiral nanomaterials were systematically investigated and analyzed in relation to the rotational symmetry of the nanomaterials. Theoretically, an ideal two-dimensional chiral matter is CD inactive for light incident normal to the plane if it possesses threefold or higher rotational symmetry. If the matter has two- or onefold rotational symmetry, it should exhibit CD activity, and the CD signal measured from the back side of the matter is expected to be inverted from that measured from the front side. For pseudo-two-dimensional chiral gold nanostructures fabricated on glass substrates using electron beam lithography, matter with fourfold rotational symmetry is found to be CD active, even when special care is taken to ensure that the optical environments for the front and back sides of the sample are equivalent. In this case, the CD signal measured from the back side is found to be almost exactly the same as that measured from the front side. It is revealed that the observed chiro-optical behavior arises from three-dimensional chiral characteristics due to differences in the surface shape between the front and back sides of the structures. For matter that is two- or onefold rotationally symmetric, the CD signal measured from the back side is not coincident with that from the front side. For certain wavelength regions, the CD signals measured from the front side and back side are observed to be similar, while at other wavelengths, the inverted component of the CD signals is found to dominate. The observed CD spectral behavior for reciprocal optical measurement configurations is considered to be determined by a balance between the in-plane isotropic and anisotropic components of the chiral permittivity. The semiconducting behavior of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures has recently attracted much interest for their possible applications in optoelectronics and others. In particular, tuning the bandgap of such nanostructures can open up a new avenue for fabricating functional nano-devices. In the present article, we report the synthesis of 2D metallic Zn nanosheets at room temperature using a ball mill, which is capable of producing large-scale materials in a single run. Initially, nanoplates were formed for ball milling the octahedral-shaped Zn nanoparticles for the time of milling of 6 h. Subsequent ball milling for another 6 h leads these nanoplates to nearly uniform nanosheets. The thickness of these 2D nanostructures was found to decrease with an increase in the time of milling. Visible photoluminescence (PL) emissions centered at ∼3, ∼2.9, and ∼2.75 eV were observed from all the Zn particles showing semiconductor behavior. The origin of such semiconductor behavior was explained based on the radiative transition of electrons from the sp band to the upper states of the 3d band. This argument was confirmed through the studies of photoelectron spectroscopy and the first principle calculations employing density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, excitation-dependent PL studies indicated that the bandgap of the 2D Zn nanostructures decreased with the increase in the ball milling time. Therefore, a redshift in the bandgap was observed with the increase in the ball milling time. Such changes in the bandgap with the thickness of 2D Zn nanostructures were also verified from the studies of DFT. Thus, the present study demonstrated that the bandgap of 2D metallic Zn nanostructures could be effectively tuned by reducing the thickness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A wooden house frame consists of many different lumber pieces, but because of the regularity of these building blocks, the structure can be designed using straightforward geometrical principles. The design of multicomponent protein assemblies, in comparison, has been much more complex, largely owing to the irregular shapes of protein structures1. Here we describe extendable linear, curved and angled protein building blocks, as well as inter-block interactions, that conform to specified geometric standards; assemblies designed using these blocks inherit their extendability and regular interaction surfaces, enabling them to be expanded or contracted by varying the number of modules, and reinforced with secondary struts. Using X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy, we validate nanomaterial designs ranging from simple polygonal and circular oligomers that can be concentrically nested, up to large polyhedral nanocages and unbounded straight 'train track' assemblies with reconfigurable sizes and geometries that can be readily blueprinted. Because of the complexity of protein structures and sequence-structure relationships, it has not previously been possible to build up large protein assemblies by deliberate placement of protein backbones onto a blank three-dimensional canvas; the simplicity and geometric regularity of our design platform now enables construction of protein nanomaterials according to 'back of an envelope' architectural blueprints.

The design of protein-protein interfaces using physics-based design methods such as Rosetta requires substantial computational resources and manual refinement by expert structural biologists. Deep learning methods promise to simplify protein-protein interface design and enable its application to a wide variety of problems by researchers from various scientific disciplines. Here, we test the ability of a deep learning method for protein sequence design, ProteinMPNN, to design two-component tetrahedral protein nanomaterials and benchmark its performance against Rosetta. ProteinMPNN had a similar success rate to Rosetta, yielding 13 new experimentally confirmed assemblies, but required orders of magnitude less computation and no manual refinement. The interfaces designed by ProteinMPNN were substantially more polar than those designed by Rosetta, which facilitated in vitro assembly of the designed nanomaterials from independently purified components. Crystal structures of several of the assemblies confirmed the accuracy of the design method at high resolution. Our results showcase the potential of deep learning-based methods to unlock the widespread application of designed protein-protein interfaces and self-assembling protein nanomaterials in biotechnology.

There have been major advances in the science to predict the likely environmental concentrations of nanomaterials, which is a key component of exposure and subsequent risk assessment. Considerable progress has been since the first Material Flow Analyses (MFAs) in 2008, which were based on very limited information, to more refined current tools that take into account engineered nanoparticle (ENP) size distribution, form, dynamic release, and better-informed release factors. These MFAs provide input for all environmental fate models (EFMs), that generate estimates of particle flows and concentrations in various environmental compartments. While MFA models provide valuable information on the magnitude of ENP release, they do not account for fate processes, such as homo- and heteroaggregation, transformations, dissolution, or corona formation. EFMs account for these processes in differing degrees. EFMs can be divided into multimedia compartment models (e.g., atmosphere, waterbodies and their sediments, soils in various landuses), of which there are currently a handful with varying degrees of complexity and process representation, and spatially-resolved watershed models which focus on the water and sediment compartments. Multimedia models have particular applications for considering predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) in particular regions, or for developing generic "fate factors" (i.e., overall persistence in a given compartment) for life-cycle assessment. Watershed models can track transport and eventual fate of emissions into a flowing river, from multiple sources along the waterway course, providing spatially and temporally resolved PECs. Both types of EFMs can be run with either continuous sources of emissions and environmental conditions, or with dynamic emissions (e.g., temporally varying for example as a new nanomaterial is introduced to the market, or with seasonal applications), to better understand the situations that may lead to peak PECs that are more likely to result in exceedance of a toxicological threshold. In addition, bioaccumulation models have been developed to predict the internal concentrations that may accumulate in exposed organisms, based on the PECs from EFMs. The main challenge for MFA and EFMs is a full validation against observed data. To date there have been no field studies that can provide the kind of dataset(s) needed for a true validation of the PECs. While EFMs have been evaluated against a few observations in a small number of locations, with results that indicate they are in the right order of magnitude, there is a great need for field data. Another major challenge is the input data for the MFAs, which depend on market data to estimate the production of ENPs. The current information has major gaps and large uncertainties. There is also a lack of robust analytical techniques for quantifying ENP properties in complex matrices; machine learning may be able to fill this gap. Nevertheless, there has been major progress in the tools for generating PECs. With the emergence of nano- and microplastics as a leading environmental concern, some EFMs have been adapted to these materials. However, caution is needed, since most nano- and microplastics are not engineered, therefore their characteristics are difficult to generalize, and there are new fate and transport processes to consider.

The present investigation involves the in situ growth of Ag nanostructures (NSs) onto a rough Cu surface, accomplished through a cost-effective and straightforward fabrication process. The inherent characteristics of the Cu surface contribute to a certain degree of a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) signal. Upon integration with Ag NSs, the Cu surface serves as an exceptionally sensitive and consistently uniform substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Notably, a singular substrate accommodates the simultaneous detection of four distinct probe molecules. Subsequent SERS analyses of Ag NSs on Cu were executed under varying laser power conditions. Intriguingly, despite the escalation in laser power, no substantial shifts were discerned in the peak positions corresponding to the probe molecules. Consequently, it can be inferred that, for investigations where peak position shifts hold significance, the utilization of a thermally conductive material in fabricating SERS-active substrates could confer notable advantages. From the perspective of a bond-order-length-strength correlation, we put forward an analytical solution to describe the size, shape, and wall thickness dependency of melting temperature, entropy, and enthalpy for metallic nanostructures. Theoretical reproduction of measurements clarified that (i) when the crystal size reduces, the atomic coordination number lowers, the atomic cohesive energy decreases, and the surface-to-volume ratio increases; (ii) at the same equivalent radius, with the decrease in the number of sides for polyhedral nanoparticles and polygonal nanowires or nanotubes, the melting temperature, entropy, and enthalpy depress; and (iii) the melting temperature, entropy, and enthalpy of nanotubes are always lower than those of nanowires with the same cross-sectional radius. The present formulation is accurate and convenient, which not only shows deeper insight into the physical origins of a melting thermodynamic property response to perturbations but also provides guidance for the design and optimization of electronic nanodevices. The temperature coefficient of resistivity (θ T) of carbon-based materials is a critical property that directly determines their electrical response upon thermal impulses. It could have metal- (positive) or semiconductor-like (negative) behavior, depending on the combined temperature dependence of electron density and electron scattering. Its distribution in space is very difficult to measure and is rarely studied. Here, for the first time, we report that carbon-based micro/nanoscale structures have a strong non-uniform spatial distribution of θ T. This distribution is probed by measuring the transient electro-thermal response of the material under extremely localized step laser heating and scanning, which magnifies the local θ T effect in the measured transient voltage evolution. For carbon microfibers (CMFs), after electrical current annealing, θ T varies from negative to positive from the sample end to the center with a magnitude change of >130% over <1 mm. This θ T sign change is confirmed by directly testing smaller segments from different regions of an annealed CMF. For micro-thick carbon nanotube bundles, θ T is found to have a relative change of >125% within a length of ∼2 mm, uncovering strong metallic to semiconductive behavior change in space. Our θ T scanning technique can be readily extended to nm-thick samples with μm scanning resolution to explore the distribution of θ T and provide a deep insight into the local electron conduction. Machine learning (ML) methods are of rapidly growing interest for materials modeling, and yet, the use of ML interatomic potentials for new systems is often more demanding than that of established density-functional theory (DFT) packages. Here, we describe computational methodology to combine the CASTEP first-principles simulation software with the on-the-fly fitting and evaluation of ML interatomic potential models. Our approach is based on regular checking against DFT reference data, which provides a direct measure of the accuracy of the evolving ML model. We discuss the general framework and the specific solutions implemented, and we present an example application to high-temperature molecular-dynamics simulations of carbon nanostructures. Electron clouds hinder the operation of particle accelerators. In the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the copper beam screens are located within close proximity to the beam path, resulting in beam-induced electron multipacting, which is the main source of electron cloud formation. Conditions for multipacting are encountered when such surfaces have a secondary electron yield (SEY) greater than unity. Roughening the surface through laser processing offers an effective solution for reducing secondary electrons. Laser ablation leaves behind a complex rough, multi-scale geometrical surface with an altered chemical composition. Current models often over-simplify the geometry, do not have sufficient experimental data to derive input parameters, and exclude SEY-reducing mechanisms such as the surface chemistry. Leading to electron-matter interactions which do not resemble that of a real surface. Here, this complex surface is studied on copper used in the LHC, and the influence of microgeometry, inhomogeneous nanostructure and complex surface chemistry on the SEY is investigated. A novel, improved model is proposed that characterises these sophisticated structures, enabling the efficient design of surfaces to reduce SEY. To validate the model, samples were made using a variety of laser parameters. Modelling insights revealed that secondary electron suppression is not only caused by the microgeometry but also the nanostructure and chemical modification play a role. Contrary to the conventional theory, high aspect ratio structures are not necessarily required for effective SEY reduction. We reported a novel donor–acceptor complex with near-infrared emission of 735 nm. During the hierarchical self-assembly process, the supramolecular system twisted into a micro-helix with red emission, depending on both crystal thickness and used solvent, despite the nonpolar structure. It is revealed that the uniform alignment of cyano groups along the stacking columns and the solvent effect induces the twisting. Random networks offer fertile ground for achieving complexity and criticality, both crucial for an unconventional computing paradigm inspired by biological brains' features. In this work, characterizing and modeling different electrical transport regimes of self‐assemblies of silver nanowires (AgNWs) are focused. As percolation plays an essential role in such a scenario, a broad range of areal density coverage is examined. Close‐to‐percolation realizations (usually used to demonstrate neuromorphic computing capabilities) have high pristine resistance and require an electrical activation. Until now, highly conductive over‐percolated systems (commonly used in electrode fabrication technology) have not been thoroughly considered for hardware‐based neuromorphic applications, even though biological systems exhibit such an extremely high degree of interconnections. Here, it is shown that high current densities in over‐percolated low‐resistance AgNW networks induce a fuse‐type process, allowing a switching operation. Such electro‐fusing discriminates between weak and robust NW‐to‐NW links and enhances the role of filamentary junctions. Their reversible resistive switching enable different conductive paths exhibiting linear I–V features. Both percolation regimes are experimentally studied and proposed a model comprising two types of junctions that can describe, through numerical simulations, the overall behavior and observed phenomenology. High entropy materials (HEMs) compositing of at least five elements have gained widespread attention in the field of electrocatalysis due to their tunable activities and high stability. These intrinsic properties can be further highlighted when the size of HEMs comes to the nanoscale. In nanostructured HEMs, the fascinating properties including large composition space, multi‐element synergy, and high configuration entropy are expected to endow nano‐HEMs with excellent catalytic activity and stability, thus providing greater potential for the design of advanced electrocatalysts. In this review, nano‐HEMs are differentiated in detail in dimensions and the common synthesis methods are summarized. Additionally, from the perspective of the complex nanostructure‐performance relationship, the applications of nano‐HEMs in electrocatalysis systems, including water‐splitting (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER)), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) are discussed. Highly dispersed Cobalt doped ZnS nanostructures were successfully fabricated on the surfaces of graphene sheets via a simple hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photocurrent spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy (RS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to analyze the structural characteristics of the cobalt doped ZnS decorated with graphene Co x Zn 1 - x S rGO nanostructures (NSs). UV-visible optical absorption (UV-vis) studies were conducted to investigate their optical properties. In laboratory studies utilizing water and visible light, the photocatalytic activity of Co x Zn 1 - x S rGO NSs at (x = 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 atm.%) were evaluated. Graphite Oxide (GO) was successfully transformed into sheets of graphene and Co x Zn 1 - x S rGO NSs possessed a crystalline structure according to the findings of XRD, RS and FTIR analysis. SEM investigation showed graphene sheets enhanced with ZnS NSs possessed cuboidal, spheroidal form of structure and displayed a paper like appearance. UV-vis confirmed a noticeable rapid increase in transmittance along the UV wavelength area and confirmed a highly transparent NSs in the wavelength range of (180-800 nm). Calculations using density functional theory (DFT) revealed that the Co NSs have more negative conduction bands than ZnS, allowing for effective electron transfer from cobalt to ZnS and exhibiting a band gap decrease as Co content increased. The Co 0.04 Zn 0.96 S rGO NSs sample had the highest photocatalytic activity, measured at 7648.9 μ mol h - 1 . A combination of improved dispersion properties, greater surface area, increased absorption and enhanced transfer of photogenerated electrons, Co x Zn 1 - x S rGO NSs increased the photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity. Due to the suitable bandgap structure, efficient conversion rates of photon to electron, adjustable optical bandgap, high electron mobility/aspect ratio, low defects, and outstanding optical and electrical properties for device design, III–V semiconductors have shown excellent properties for optoelectronic applications, including photodiodes, photodetectors, solar cells, photocatalysis, etc. In particular, III–V nanostructures have attracted considerable interest as a promising photodetector platform, where high-performance photodetectors can be achieved based on the geometry-related light absorption and carrier transport properties of III–V materials. However, the detection ranges from Ultraviolet to Terahertz including broadband photodetectors of III–V semiconductors still have not been more broadly development despite significant efforts to obtain the high performance of III–V semiconductors. Therefore, the recent development of III–V photodetectors in a broad detection range from Ultraviolet to Terahertz, and future requirements are highly desired. In this review, the recent development of photodetectors based on III–V semiconductor with different detection range is discussed. First, the bandgap of III–V materials and synthesis methods of III–V nanostructures are explored, subsequently, the detection mechanism and key figures-of-merit for the photodetectors are introduced, and then the device performance and emerging applications of photodetectors are provided. Owing to their flexibility and high thermal resistance, para-aramid based Kevlar™ fabric substrates are an ideal candidate for obtaining flexible gas sensors for new-generation wearable technologies. The morphology of the surface of the substrate where the target gas comes into contact directly affects the important features of the sensor such as detection limit, selectivity, and response. In this context, a feasible technique is introduced to enhance the efficiency of flexible gas sensors utilizing ZnO/Kevlar™, entailing the modification of ZnO morphology. ZnO based gas sensing layers were deposited on Kevlar™ fabric substrates by a two-stage method. Initially, seed layer was produced on Kevlar™ fabric using the ultrasonic bath method, with five different seed layer processing times ranging from 1 min to 20 min. In the nucleation, all nanostructured layers were deposited by hydrothermal method with constant parameters and under the same conditions. As the seeding time was increased, nanorods (1D) formed on the surface became flakes (2D), leading to considerable improvement in NH3 gas sensing properties. The sensor with a 5-min seeding time showed a sensitivity of 49 % at an optimal operating temperature of 190 °C, while the sensor produced in 20 min showed the best response performance with 169 % at 130 °C for 50 ppm NH3 gas. The increase in seeding time not only reduced the operating temperature of the gas sensor through the conversion from 1D nanostructure to 2D, but also significantly increased the sensor response. Under constant hydrothermal conditions and solution concentration, the density per unit area increases. However, after 10 min of seeding, the length of nanorods shortens and turn into a rod-flake hybrid morphology. A superior sensor performance was demonstrated for the samples examined. The increase in life expectancy has led to a concerning decline in the body's functional capacity, particularly in bone health, where decreased resistance and increased fracture susceptibility pose significant challenges in orthopedics. While traditional bone grafting methods have drawbacks, synthetic materials, particularly hydroxyapatite (HA), offer promising alternatives due to their biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties. However, HA's mechanical limitations necessitate reinforcement, with boron nitride nanostructures emerging as a particularly effective option, enhancing fracture resistance and combining HA with collagen, further mimicking natural bone composition, offering several benefits. Moreover, crosslinking agents like tannic acid (TA) improve collagen's stability and introduce therapeutic benefits. Therefore, the present work aimed to synthesize an innovative nanocomposite formed by hydroxyapatite, boron nitride nanostructures, collagen, and tannic acid. The nanocomposites obtained were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry (TGA), elemental analysis of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (CHN), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical tests of Vickers hardness, nanoindentation, tensile, and DMA demonstrated an increase in the mechanical resistance of the nanocomposites, thus corroborating their promising character. A controlled drug release test showed that the system could be used for antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) delivery, further expanding its function. Biological cell viability assays reported that the system is not toxic to healthy cells and is harmful to tumor cells, thus demonstrating the antitumor nature of TA. Therefore, integrating HA, BN nanostructures, collagen, and TA into a multifunctional nanocomposite, a novel approach in orthopedic biomaterial design is offered as a promising solution to address various bone-related challenges. Transition metal oxides are suitable catalysts, capable of converting toxic carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Morphological and textural behaviors of the catalyst influence the catalytic conversion efficiencies. The present work highlights the role of anions of the nickel‐based precursor salts in hydrothermally synthesized (180 °C/24 h) nickel oxide catalysts toward CO conversion concerning their surface area, pore dimensions, and microstructural characteristics. Precursors having different anions used in NiO synthesis have distinct effects in shaping the physicochemical features of the synthesized catalysts governing the catalytic conversion process which were investigated in this study. The nitrate and acetate‐based NiO with flower‐like morphology exhibit a comparatively low surface area (BET) and larger pore volume and diameter than the sulfate‐based precursor. Catalytic CO oxidation study reveals that T100 i.e., the temperature to reach 100 % volume conversion of CO to CO2 was 249, 209, and 274 °C for nitrate, acetate, and sulfate‐based precursors, respectively. It was evident that the higher pore volume is a critical parameter that facilitates and governs efficient catalytic CO oxidation at comparatively low temperatures. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo‐TEM) combined with single particle analysis (SPA) is an emerging imaging approach for soft materials. However, the accuracy of SPA‐reconstructed nanostructures, particularly those formed by synthetic polymers, remains uncertain due to potential packing heterogeneity of the nanostructures. In this study, the combination of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and image simulations is utilized to validate the accuracy of cryo‐TEM 3D reconstructions of self‐assembled polypeptoid fibril nanostructures. Using CryoSPARC software, image simulations, 2D classifications, ab initio reconstructions, and homogenous refinements are performed. By comparing the results with atomic models, the recovery of molecular details is assessed, heterogeneous structures are identified, and the influence of extraction location on the reconstructions is evaluated. These findings confirm the fidelity of single particle analysis in accurately resolving complex structural characteristics and heterogeneous structures, exhibiting its potential as a valuable tool for detailed structural analysis of synthetic polymers and soft materials. Pd‐based alloy nanomaterials normally crystallize in the conventional face‐centered cubic (fcc) crystal phase. Here, 2H‐Au nanosheets (NSs), possessing 2H crystal phase (2H: hexagonal close‐packed with a stacking sequence of “AB”), are used as templates for the growth of PdFe, during which the 2H‐to‐fcc phase transformation in Au NSs happens, leading to the formation of 2H/fcc Au@PdFe core–shell NSs. By changing the Pd/Fe atomic ratio, the 2H/fcc phase ratio in 2H/fcc Au@PdFe NSs can be tuned accordingly. As a proof‐of‐concept application, the as‐synthesized 2H/fcc Au@Pd0.66Fe0.34 NSs are used as an electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media, exhibiting a remarkable mass activity of 4.39 A mg−1Pd, which is 1.7, 5.4 and 12.9 times that of 2H/fcc Au@Pd0.56Fe0.44 NSs (2.57 A mg−1Pd), 2H/fcc Au@Pd0.40Fe0.60 NSs (0.81 A mg−1Pd), and Pd black (0.34 A mg−1Pd), respectively, placing it among the best of reported Pd‐based MOR electrocatalysts. Metal-organic framework (MOF) derived metal oxide nanostructures hold immense promise as electrodes for energy storage/conversion applications, notably in supercapacitors and urea oxidation. This study explores into optimizing such nanostructures, specifically focusing on a Zr/Ni ratio of 1:1, which has exhibited favorable electrochemical and catalytic performance. Employing thorough characterization methods, including PXRD analysis, we verified the successful synthesis of a ZrO 2 /NiO binary phase (i.e. Zr/Ni) nanostructure via the MOF-derived approach, showcasing its versatility as a catalyst across diverse energy conversion domains. The Zr/Ni nanostructure electrode displayed noteworthy characteristics, boasting a capacity of 432 C/g alongside exceptional cycling stability of 99%, reflecting battery-like electrochemical behavior. Furthermore, in an asymmetric device setup (Zr/Ni//AC), it achieved a notable potential of up to 1.4 V with an impressive power density of 1044.56 W/kg. The emergence of planar meta‐lenses on flexible materials has profoundly impacted the long‐standing perception of diffractive optics. Despite their advantages, these lenses still face challenges in design and fabrication to obtain high focusing efficiency and resolving power. A nanofabrication technique is demonstrated based on photolithography and polyimide casting for realizing membrane‐based multilevel phase‐type Fresnel zone plates (FZPs) with high focusing efficiency. By employing advantageous techniques, these lenses with nanostructures are directly patterned into thin polyimide membranes. The computational and experimental results have indicated that the focusing efficiency of these nanostructures at the primary focus increases significantly with increasing the number of phase levels. Specifically, 16‐level phase lenses on a polyimide membrane can achieve a focusing efficiency of more than 91.6% of the input signal (9.5 times better than that of a conventional amplitude‐type FZP) and focus light into a diffraction‐limited spot together with very weak side‐lobes. Furthermore, these lenses exhibit considerably reduced unwanted diffraction orders and produce extremely low background signals. The potential impact of these lenses extends across various applications and techniques including microscopy, imaging, micro‐diffraction, remote sensing, and space flight instruments which require lightweight and flexible configurations. In this study, the nonlinear optical phenomena emerging from the interaction between vortex and vector beams and achiral nanoparticles or nanostructures are investigated. Despite the achiral symmetry of the nanostructure, the interplay between the symmetries of the vortex beam, the nanostructure, and the crystalline lattice of the nanostructure material can result in circular dichroism in the nonlinear regime. A formula is derived that describes the conditions for the appearance of circular dichroism across a broad range of scenarios, taking into account all the symmetries. Building on these findings, the conditions for both linear and nonlinear dichroism when illuminated by vector beams have been determined. Extensive efforts have been dedicated towards designing new organic materials that display solid-state fluorescence and possess optical activity, thereby leading to the fabrication of materials emitting circularly polarized light. Existing organic materials usually suffer from two limitations, a low dissymmetry factor (glum) and weak or no fluorescence in the solid state. Herein, we have demonstrated a naphthalene imide-based dyad system that remains fluorescent even in powder form and displays circularly polarized luminescence in its aggregated and solid state with significantly high glum values. This study presents a novel refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance, incorporating a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with a circular ring structure (CRC). Using finite element method analysis, we investigated the propagation properties of the sensor. To evaluate their influence on sensor performance, we systematically varied the parameters of each Circular Resonant Cavity structure component, including the refractive index, employing a controlled variable approach. At its optimal configuration, the sensor achieves a maximum sensitivity of 3,240 nm/RIU and a figure of merit (FOM) of 57.9. The rapid expansion of industrial activities has resulted in severe environmental pollution manifested by organic dyes discharged from the food, textile, and leather industries, as well as hazardous gas emissions from various industrial processes. Titanium dioxide (TiO2)-nanostructured materials have emerged as promising candidates for effective photocatalytic dye degradation and gas sensing applications owing to their unique physicochemical properties. This study investigates the development of a photocatalyst and a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sensor using hydrothermally synthesized globosa-like TiO2 nanostructures (GTNs). The synthesized GTNs are then evaluated to photocatalytically degrade methylene blue dye, resulting in an outstanding photocatalytic activity of 91% degradation within 160 min under UV light irradiation. Furthermore, these nanostructures are utilized to sense liquefied petroleum gas, which attains a superior sensitivity of 7.3% with high response and recovery times and good reproducibility. Since the discovery of the phenomenon of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), it has gradually become an important tool for the analysis of material compositions and structures. The applications of SERS have been expanded from the fields of environmental and materials science to biomedicine due to the extremely high sensitivity and non-destructiveness of SERS-based analytical technology that even allows single-molecule detection. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) phenomenon. The content is divided into several main sections: basic principles and the significance of Raman spectroscopy; historical advancements and technological progress in SERS; and various practical applications across different fields. We also discuss how electromagnetic fields contribute to the SERS effect, the role of chemical interactions in enhancing Raman signals, a modeling and computational approaches to understand and predict SERS effects. Persistent homology is a powerful tool for quantifying various structures, but it is equally crucial to maintain its interpretability. In this study, we extracted interpretable geometric features from the persistent diagrams (PDs) of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images of self-assembled Pt-CeO2 nanostructures synthesized under different annealing conditions. We focused on PD quadrants and extracted five interpretable features from the zeroth and first PDs of nanostructures ranging from maze-like to striped patterns. A combination of hierarchical clustering and inverse analysis of PDs reconstructed by principal component analysis through vectorization of the PDs highlighted the importance of the number of arc-like structures of the CeO2 phase in the first PDs, particularly those that were smaller than a characteristic size. This descriptor enabled us to quantify the degree of disorder, namely the density of bends, in nanostructures formed under different conditions. Nucleic acids, like DNA and RNA, serve as versatile recognition elements in electrochemical biosensors, demonstrating notable efficacy in detecting various cancer biomarkers with high sensitivity and selectivity. These biosensors offer advantages such as cost-effectiveness, rapid response, ease of operation, and minimal sample preparation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in nucleic acid-based electrochemical biosensors for cancer diagnosis, comparing them with antibody-based counterparts. Specific examples targeting key cancer biomarkers, including prostate-specific antigen, microRNA-21, and carcinoembryonic antigen, are highlighted. The discussion delves into challenges and limitations, encompassing stability, reproducibility, interference, and standardization issues. The review suggests future research directions, exploring new nucleic acid recognition elements, innovative transducer materials and designs, novel signal amplification strategies, and integration with microfluidic devices or portable instruments. Evaluating these biosensors in clinical settings using actual samples from cancer patients or healthy donors is emphasized. These sensors are sensitive and specific at detecting non-communicable and communicable disease biomarkers. DNA and RNA's self-assembly, programmability, catalytic activity, and dynamic behavior enable adaptable sensing platforms. They can increase biosensor biocompatibility, stability, signal transduction, and amplification with nanomaterials. Mono-derivatives of fullerene C60 with l-phenylalanine, o-fluoro-l-phenylalanine and p-fluoro-l-phenylalanine, as well as their hybrid nanostructures with derivatives of vitamin B12, have been synthesised. The structure of the compounds was determined by IR, UV and CD-spectroscopy. The IR spectra of the obtained compounds contain all bands characteristic of the original compounds, with the exception of the band at 1227 cm−1, which is related to the free carboxyl group in the fullerene fragment. In the UV spectra of hybrid nanostructures contain smoothed peaks in the region of 360 nm, confirming the presence of corrin ligand in the original and obtained compounds. Using the CD method, it was found that all spectra have a characteristic maximum in the region of 430 nm, confirming the presence in all hybrids nanostructures of a fragment of vitamin B12: e-COOH-Cbi(OH)2. The radiuses of nanoparticles of hybrid nanostructures, calculated by the dynamic light scattering method, range from 90 to 120 nm. The degree of association in the complexes ranges from 400 to 600 thousand molecules. It was shown that the resulting hybrid nanostructure retains catalytic activity in the autoxidation reaction of ascorbic acid, inherent in derivatives of vitamin B12. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-engineered reactive-oxygen catalytic materials (ROCMs) have offered essential contributions to boosting the biocatalytic efficiency in diverse biomedical applications. While since the varied coordination environments, abundant node-ligand pairs, and multiple or complex atom sites, precisely overviewing the mechanisms and revealing the structure–reactivity relationships of MOFs-engineered ROCMs still confront great challenges, which is essential to direct the future design and applications of ROCMs. Here, we provide a comprehensive summarization of the latest progress and future trends in MOFs-engineered ROCMs with enzyme-mimicking structures for ROS regulation and biotherapeutic applications. First, the catalytic behaviors and fundamental mechanisms of MOFs-engineered ROCMs on regulating ROS levels are outlined. Then, the enzyme-mimicking coordination environments and structure evolutions of MOFs-engineered ROCMs are discussed thoroughly, including coordination modulation, hybrid structures, carbon nanostructures, and single-atom materials. Particularly, we offer unique insights into enzyme structure mimicking, microenvironment modulation, structure evolutions, and theoretical understanding for revealing mechanisms. Thereafter, the representative biotherapeutic applications have been summarized with a unique focus on structural property-reactivity relationships. Finally, we systematically highlight the current challenges and future perspectives. Overall, this is a timely review that focuses on creating MOF structures for reactive-oxygen biocatalysis from structure-activity relationships to biological properties. Nanostructured Y‐TZP samples with Non‐Homogeneous Yttria Distribution (NNHYD) were prepared by mixing co‐precipitated 3Y‐TZP powder (Tosoh TZ‐3Y) with yttria‐free monoclinic powder (Tosoh TZ‐0), yielding an overall yttria content of 2 mol%. The cyclic fatigue behavior of NNHYD was evaluated by Step‐Stress Accelerated Life Testing (SSALT) and mechanical cycling in a biaxial flexural strength test (BFST) setup and compared to Conventional Submicrometric 3Y‐TZP (CS). Physical, structural, microstructural, and mechanical characterizations of all groups were also evaluated and compared before and after artificial aging in autoclave. NNHYD presented a higher capacity for damage accumulation and maintenance of phase transformation potential than CS, associated with elevated resistance to the propagation of Low‐Temperature Degradation (LTD). A nanostructured 3Y‐TZP surface layer introduced in NNHYD by dip coating (DC‐NNHYD) improved resistance to LTD at the cost of reduced reliability under cyclic fatigue by increasing the stability of the tetragonal phase. This surface alteration highlights the impact of surface properties on mechanical performance. The results of this study present practical possibilities to help achieve the ideal balance between strength, toughness, and LTD resistance to improve the lifetime of zirconia‐based biomaterials. Ultrafast laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) have been studied intensely in the last two decades, which have become a useful method for surface nanostructures and are widely used to tune surface properties. This paper reported the fabrication of high-spatial-frequency LIPSSs (HSFLs) on FTO film induced by 1,030 nm femtosecond laser. The morphology, duty cycle and birefringence effects of HSFLs were studied in detail by changing the laser fluence and scanning speed. Clear and uniform HSFLs were formed over the entire ablated area when the laser fluence and scanning speed were 89 mJ/cm2 and 0.01 mm/s, respectively. The duty cycle of the HSFL was measured to be as high as 0.36, and the thickness of the HSFL layer was found to be in the range of 409–546 nm. The phase retardation of the FTO film with HSFLs could reach up to 96 nm and could be used as an optical attenuator with a tunable range of 71–100% for 532 nm linear polarized light. Y-shaped AuCu tripods with three-fold symmetry from icosahedral seeds and star-shaped AuCu pentapods with five-fold symmetry from decahedral seeds are controlled synthesized. Herein, we report a controlled synthesis of symmetrically branched AuCu alloyed nanocrystals. By varying Au:Cu atom ratio in precursor, Y-shaped tripods with three-fold symmetry and star-shaped pentapods with five-fold symmetry are synthesized, respectively. The growth mechanism of AuCu tripods from icosahedral seeds and AuCu pentapods from decahedral seeds is revealed. Aiming to excellent photocatalytic performance, CdS nanocrystals are controlled grown onto the sharp tips of AuCu tripods and pentapods. In addition, a carrier-selective blocking layer of Ag 2 S is introduced between AuCu and CdS, for achieving effective charge separation in AuCu-Ag 2 S-CdS nanohybrids. Through evaluating the photocatalytic performance by hydrogen generation experiments, the AuCu-Ag 2 S-CdS tripod nanocrystals exhibit an optimized hydrogen evolution rate of 2182 μmol·g−1·h−1. Here, we have grown crystalline MoSe2 and WSe2 nanostructures on thin flexible Mo and W metal foils at growth temperature of 450–550°C by using the single-zone atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method. Raman spectroscopy measurements confirm the structural formation with low line widths for MoSe2 on Mo foil at 450°C and WSe2 on W foil at 550°C corresponding to their optical vibrational Raman modes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show the hexagonal 2H phase of grown MoSe2 and WSe2 nanostructures attributed to their distinguished XRD peaks. The field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the granular-layered MoSe2 surface, whereas the nano-woolforest type surface of WSe2 film. Elemental analysis using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy technique confirms the formation of nearly stoichiometry MoSe2 and WSe2 compounds. Chemical composition and binding energy values of deposited films were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Growth of polycrystalline and large-area MoSe2 and WSe2 film on flexible metal foils using scalable and low-cost CVD system paves the way for the fabrication of futuristic flexible energy devices on metal foils. The present work investigated the effect of Ni-doping on the structural and dielectric properties of Ni-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) prepared by a solvothermal route. The substitution of nickel at Zn sites was confirmed via X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement, which revealed a hexagonal crystal structure. Morphological characterization was performed with the help of SEM, in which a significant variation in morphology was observed with increasing nickel doping concentration. The dielectric properties of all the compositions were measured as a function of frequency (1 Hz–10 MHz) and temperature (100–350°C). A temperature-dependent dielectric study of the compositions showed negative values for the dielectric constant in the low-frequency and high-temperature regimes. A decrease in the dielectric constant is observed for ZnO ceramics with increasing nickel doping percentage and is explained with the Penn model. Finally, an attempt is made to discuss the possible mechanism for the emergence of a negative dielectric constant. Additionally, a detailed structural analysis was performed to understand the conductivity behaviour of the nickel-doped zinc oxide ceramics. For ZnO samples with higher nickel doping, epsilon-near-zero behaviour is achieved, which is necessary for developing waveguides and coil-free resonators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different mouthwash solutions on the color stability of a nanohybrid composite resin. Forty discs of Luna nanohybrid composite resin were prepared and randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups (n = 10), determined by the type of immersion solution: distiiled water (DW); Oral-B Pro-Health mouthwash (OBPH); Listerine Total Care mouthwash (LTC); or Colgate Plax Infinity mouthwash (CPI). The discs were immersed in solution for 30 minutes a day and stored at 37°C for 24 hours. Digital photographs of each specimen were taken at each timepoint and transferred to a computer program for color analysis. The International Commission on Illumination L*a*b* system was used to analyze the color of the specimens at baseline and the overall color change (ΔE*) at baseline, 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days. Two-way analysis of variance was used to evaluate the influence of solution and time on 82 values (α = 0.05). The f test was used as a post hoc test to compare the mean values between groups (α = 0.05). After 30 days, all groups showed small color change values compared with baseline (ΔE*1 < 1.0). However, after 60 days, the LTC and CPI groups showed greater color change (ΔE*2) than the other groups, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). After 90 days, all groups differed significantly compared with the control group (P < 0.05), and all mouthwash groups presented color change values that are considered clinically unacceptable (ΔE*3 > 3.0). The results of this in vitro study indicate that mouthwash solutions do not cause significant color changes in nanohybrid composite resin for a period of up to 30 days; however, longer periods (90 days) of exposure could make the restorative material esthetically unacceptable.
