Two different species ofparrots (Nymphicus hollandicus and Amazona amazonica) with severe itchingand feather pecking especially in the evening were submitted to the AnkaraUniversity Parasitology clinic at different times. No clinical symptoms otherthan intense moulting and erythematous papules formed in these areas has beenobserved in physical examination. Accordingto the anemnesis and clinical findings, ectoparasite examination was accepted. Forthis purpose, both parrots and cages and equipment have been carefully examinedand a large number of mites smaller than 1 mm have been detected. Microscopic analysis of the collected mitesamples revealed to be Dermanyssusgallinae. In this case report, in domestic poultry, when the symptoms withpruritus and cannibalism are observed, it is concluded that they should beexamined in terms of ectoparasites as well as nutritional deficiencies andbreeding errors., Nymphicus hollandicus ve Amazona amazonica türlerine ait, iki papağan, sahiplerinin şiddetlikaşıntı, kanibaliktik davranışlar fark etmesi üzerine Ankara ÜniversitesiVeteriner Fakültesine Parazitoloji kliniğine getirilmişlerdir. Fizikselmuayenede yoğun tüy döküntüsü ve bu bölgelerde şekillenmiş eritematöz papüllerdışında herhangi bir klinik semptom gözlenmemiştir. Anamnez ve klinikbulguların değerlendirilmesi ile ektoparazitik inceleme uygun görülmüştür. Buamaçla hem papağanların üzeri hem de kafes ve ekipmanları dikkatli bir şekilde incelenmişve 1 mm’den daha küçük çok sayıda akar tespit edilmiştir. Toplanan akar numunelerinmikroskobik analizi sonucunda Dermanyssusgallinae olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Bu olgu sunumuyla, evcil kanatlılarda pruritusve kanibalizm ile seyreden klinik tablo ile karşılaşıldığında, beslenmeeksikliklerinin ve yetiştirme hatalarının yanı sıra ektoparazitler yönünden deincelenmesi gerektiği sonucuna varılmıştır.

This study was carried out to detect the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in cattle in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Serum samples obtained from 98 cattle of different regions and age groups were tested for T.gondii antibodies by the Sabin-Feldman and Indirect Flourescent Antibody tests. According to the results of the SF test, 34 animals (34.69%), and according to the results of the IFA test 30 (30.61%) animals were found to be seropositive. Statistical evaluations showed that the results of the two tests were in agreement with each other.

Since the total of 150,000 doses of attenuated cell culture vaccine doses produced anually in Turkey does not meet the requirements of the country, by reducing the number of vaccine cells in a single dose, an increased number of vaccine doses was obtained for cattle, and doses consisting of different numbers of vaccine cells were tested according to their protective efficiency against tropical theileriosis in cattle. Fifty Holstein calves aged 2.5-3 months were used: 42 of them were used in vaccine dose trials while 8 were used in the determination of pathogenicity of the challenge material. In order to examine doses consisting of different numbers of vaccine cells, 3 experiments were carried out. Three groups (including 1 control) consisting of 4 calves were formed in the first experiment while 5 groups (including 1 control) consisting of 3 calves were formed in the second experiment and 2 groups consisting of 10 and 5 (control) calves were formed in the third experiment. Calves in the first experiment groups were vaccinated with 106 and 107 vaccine cells, whereas calves in the second experiment groups were vaccinated with 103, 104, 105 and 106 and calves in the third experiment groups were vaccinated with 106 cells. Animals in the control groups were not vaccinated. Generally, significant reactions were not observed in vaccinated calves and neither schizonts in lymph node smears nor piroplasm forms in blood smears were detected in any of them. No difference was observed in blood cell levels. Thirty-five days after vaccination, animal groups including the control groups were challenged with Theileria annulata Sarıoba Hyalomma detritum tick stabilate (4 t.e.) in the first experiment, T. annulata Akdere H. detritum tick stabilate (4 t.e.) in the second experiment and T. annulata AKSA H. anatolicum anatolicum (4 t.e./1 ml T. annulata Akdere + 4 t.e./1 ml T. annulata Sarıoba) tick stabilate (prepared from 8 ticks) in the third experiment. Infection developed in both vaccinated and non-vaccinated calves following challenge and schizonts, piroplasms and fever were observed. When compared to vaccinated calves, parasitaemia and schizont levels and body temperatures were higher and clinical reactions were more severe in non-vaccinated calves. Vaccinated and non-vaccinated calves in the third experiment groups, which were challenged with higher material levels, exhibited more severe infection symptoms compared to the first 2 experiment groups. Higher levels of schizont and piroplasms were detected in the animal groups in the third experiment, and 4 of the vaccinated calves (40%) and all control calves (100%) died from tropical theileriosis. In conclusion, vaccines applied at 103, 104, 105, 106 and 107 cell doses were found to protect cattle from infection in this research. No significant difference was detected between the protective efficiacy of vaccine doses. However, in cases in which tick challenge was higher, the 106 cell vaccine dose was found to be insufficient regarding protection.

Bu çalışma, Ankara’nın Eryaman yöresinden yakalanan 23 Spalax leucodon türü kör farede coccidian oocystlerinin tespiti amacıyla yapılmıştır. Muayene edilen 23 kör farenin tamamı (%100) 2-8 türle, 10 farklı Eimeria ve 1 İsospora oocysti ile enfekte bulunmuştur. Kör farelerden elde edilen dışkı örneklerinde %78.2 Eimeria elliptica, %73.9 E.maralikiensis, %65.2 E.spalacis, %52.1 E.torosicum, %47.8 E.turkmenica, %43.4 E.lalahanensis, %30.4 E.talikiensis, %21.7 E.oytuni, %13 E.celebii, %4.3 E.tuzdili, %4.3 Isospora anatolicum rapor edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak S.leucodon’da daha önce Türkiye’den bildirilen E.lalahanensis, E.tuzdili, E.spalacis, E.elliptica, E.turkmenica ve I.anatolicum türleri ile ülkemizde henüz bildirilmemiş olan E.maralikiensis ve E.talikiensis türleride bulunmuştur. Ayrıca yine bu çalışmada S.ehrenbergi’de bulunan E.oytuni, E.celebii, E.torosicum türleri S.leucodon’da ilk defa tespit edilmiştir, Twenty-three mole-rats of the Spalax leucodon Nordmann superspecies were collected from Eryaman district of Ankara in Turkey. Faeces samples were examined for coccidian oocysts and the 23 examined animals (100%) were determined to be infected with 2-8 species representing 10 species of eimerians and 1 species of isosporan. The prevalence of coccidian in the population of herbivorous mole-rats sampled is reported as 78.2% Eimeria elliptica, 73.9% E.maralikiensis, 65.2% E.spalacis, 52.1% E.torosicum, 47.8% E.turkmenica, 43.4% E.lalahanensis, 30.4% E.talikiensis, 21.7% E.oytuni, 13% E.celebii, 4.3% E.tuzdili, 4.3% Isospora anatolicum. As a result, E.lalahanensis, E.tuzdili, E.spalacis, E.elliptica, E.turkmenica, I.anatolicum, as well as E.maralikiensis, E.talikiensis, E.oytuni, E.celebii, E.torosicum were determined in S.leucodon in Turkey. In addition, E.maralikiensis and E.talikiensis were reported from S.leucodon for the first time in Turkey. Furthermore the species which were found in S.ehrenbergi such as E.oytuni, E.celebii, E.torosicum were also reported from S.leucodon for the first time in this study

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of coccidia species in cattle in the region of Mucur (Kirsehir). The study was carried out between April and May 2009, in 18 barns and farms at 4 different localities. Coccidian oocysts were found in 50.6% of all samples examined by Sheather's sugar flotation technique. Infection prevalence was found higher (68.3%) in cattle aged between 6 and 12 months and also in males (61.5%). The identified coccidia species were E. auburnensis, E. canadensis, E. ellipsoidalis, E. zuernii, E. bovis, E. cylindrica, E. alabamensis, E. bukidnonensis and Isospora spp in infected cattle. The pure and mix infection rates were 41.2% and 58.8%, respectively.

This study has been carried out to detect Theileria infection in sheep and goats in different geographical regions of Turkey such as Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia and Southern Anatolia. Many visits were made to these locations in different periods and a total of 687 sheep and 89 goats, suspected to have Theileria infection, were examined. The prevalance of infection with T. ovis was 64.19 % in sheep and 12.36 % in goats. Microscopical examination showed that the percentage of parasite carriers was 37.55 % in sheep and 5.62 % in goats. Its seroprevalance was 60.26 % in sheep and 8.99 % in goats by IFAT. Theileria lestoquardi, which is very pathogenic for sheep and goats, is not present in Turkey. A total of 709 ticks were collected from sheep and goats, Bu çalışmada, Orta Anadolu, Güney Anadolu ve Doğu Anadolu gibi Türkiye'nin değişik coğrafik bölgelerinde, koyun ve keçilerde Theileria enfeksiyonu incelenmiştir. Değişik zamanlarda bu farklı bölgelerden Theileria şüpheli 687 koyun ve 89 keçi muayene edilmiştir. Theileria ovis'in hem serolojik, hem de mikroskopik muayenesiyle saptanan prevalans oranları koyunlarda % 64.19 ve keçilerde % 12.36 olarak tespit edilmiştir. Mikroskopik muayenede koyunların % 37.55 ve keçilerin % 5.62'sinde piroplasm şekli görülmüştür. Serolojik muayenede ise IFA testi ile koyunlarda % 60.26 ve keçilerde % 8.99 pozitiflik tespit edilmiştir. Keçi ve koyunlarda yüksek oranda hastalık ve ölüm meydana getirdiği belirtilen patojen T. lestoquardi türüne Türkiye'de rastlanmamıştır. Muayene edilen koyun ve keçiler üzerinde toplam 709 adet kene bulunmuştur

Çalışmada, her birinde 14 günlük 14 civciv bulunan 8 grup sırasıyla 25 bin, 50 bin, 100 bin, 200 bin, 350 bin, 500 bin, 750 bin ve 1 milyon oocyst ile enfekte edilmiş, bir grup ise negatif kontrol olarak ayrılmıştır. Kullanılan inokulum, sahadan elde edilen ve farklı türlerden oluşan Eimeria oocystlerinden hazırlanmıştır. Enfeksiyonu takip eden dönemde gruplarda görülen klinik bulgular düzenli olarak kaydedilmiştir. Ölen ve enfeksiyonun 10 ve 30uncu günü gruplardan seçilen civcivlerde nekropsi uygulanmış, görülebilen bütün makroskobik değişiklikler ve bağırsak bölümlerine ait uzunluklar kaydedilmiştir. Civcivlerde görülen canlı ağırlık (CA) değişimini belirlemek amacıyla da gruplardaki bütün civcivler enfeksiyonun 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ve 30 günlerinde tartılmışlardır. Elde edilen veriler, enfeksiyon dozu, klinik bulgular, bağırsak değişiklikleri ve CA kazanımı arasında belli bir ilişki olduğunu, ancak söz konusu ilişkinin basit aritmetiksel bir karakter taşımadığını, farklı bir çok etmenin kontrolü altında olduğunu veya olabileceğini göstermiştir. At this study, 8 groups of 14 days-old 14 birds were infected respectively with 25x103, 50x103, 100x103, 200x103, 350x103 , 500x103, 750x103 and 1000x103 Eimeria spp oocysts and 9th group was determined as control. The inoculum consist of different types of field oocysts. Clinical findings of groups were registered in sequent period. Necropsical examinations were applied to the birds choosen at the days of 10th and 30th of the inoculation and also dead ones. The data of macroscopic changes and lenghts of gut parts were recorded. For the purpose of determining live weight changes, all of the birds were weighted at 0, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th day of the infection. Although the data shows a relationship between the dose of infection, clinical findings, gut changes and live weight changes but it also shows that relationship isn t arithmetical and/or may be under control of lots of factors.

This study was carried out in an endemic region of Central Anatolia to research the ep epidemiologyof tropical the theileriosis after vaccination from March 1996 to April 1999. The study was conductedin Kesikköprü, Köseli, Kerişli villages and TIGEM farm of Bala county, and Kabak, Güreş,Girmeç, Hıdırşeyh villages and TIGEM fann of Polatlı county where the presence of Theileria annulatawas detected by blood smear inspections. In these villages, 50 % of cattles was native, 30 %cross-breed and 20 % pure Holstein.The studies have showed that the prevalence of T.annulata was 39.8 % befare the vaccination.Cattle were vaccinated by T. annulata live macro-schizont vaccine that contained 107 cells perml (produced in Pendik Veterinary Research Institute). lnspections done 45 days later fallawing tothe vaccination showed that 58.5% of cattle became seropositive against T. amııtlata antigen. Theseropositivity percentage in unvaccinated control group cattle became 30.1% during one activeseason of the disease. In the same period, 48.5 % of vaccinated and 29.4 % of control group animalsbecame the port or of T. annulata.The vaccine was found to be partially effective on tropical theileriosis since the ineidence ofthe disease was detected to be 1.9% in the vaccinated animals and 10.5 %in the unvaccinated controlgroup animals. It was also confırmed with this study that theileriosis is endemic disease in certainregions of Ankara province.The sporoblasts of T.annulata were found in the saliva glands of Hyalomma anatolicum anatolcumand Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum. lt was concluded that tlıese ticks are the potantialvecfor of tropical the theileriosis in Turkey., Türkiye'de mevcut sığırların çoğunluğu,genetik yapı İtibarıyle, düşük verimli yerli ırklardanmeydana gelmiştir. Bu nedenle, tarımsalpotansiyeli yüksek bölgelerde bulunan yerliırk sığırların yerine batıdan kültür ırkı sığırlarithal edilerek, yıllardır sığırcılığın ıslahına çalışılmıştır.Ancak, Türkiye'de sığır yetiştiriciliğiniolumsuz yönde etkileyen, genetik yapıdışında diğer bazı faktörler de mevcuttur. Bufaktörler arasında viral, bakteriyel ve paraziterhastalıklar önemli yer tutarlar.

Bu araştırma, Ocak 1993 - Mart 1995 tarihleri arasmda Adana İli Çukurova Tarımişletmesinde yetiştirilen Holstein ırkı sığırlar üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Bir yıl süre ile yoklamalarıyapılan kalan 60 negatif sığırdan, hastalık sezonu boyunca, l7'sinin (%28.3) Tannulataenfeksiyonuna yakalandığı ve kümülatif seroinsidensin 0.283 olduğu tespit edilmiştir.Epidemiyolojik çalışmayı takiben, seronegatifliği devam eden 58 sığıra Mart 1994 tarihindefropikal fheileriosis'e karşı aftenüe 107 Tannulata şizont aşısı uygulanmıştır. Tropikal theileriosis'ekarşı aşı yapllan 58 sığırdan 45'inin (%77.5), Tannulata piroplasm ve şizont antijenine karşı antikortaşıdığı ve hunlardan 6 (%10.3) sığırm da piroplasm taşıyıcısı olduğu saptanmıştır. Theileriaannulata piroplasm antijenine karşı antikor titresi 1:20 ve 1:5120. şizont antijenine karşı ise 1:40 ve1'2560 araSlılda değişmiştir. Ayrıca aynı zamanda zamanda 10 seronegatif buzağıya tropikaltheileriosis'e karşı aşı uygulanmıştır. Bütün buzağılar aşıdan sonra seropozitif bulunmuş, Theileriaannuluta piroplasm antijenine karşı antikor titresinin 1:20 ve 1:10240, şizont antijeniııı' karşı antikortitresi 1.40 ve 1:640 arasmda olduğu görülmüştür.Aşllama öncesi ve sonrası bir yıl süreyle takip edilen sığırlar ve buzat~ılar üzerindeHyalomma soyuna bağli kene türleri bulunamamıştır.

48 ÖZET Bu araştırma, Ocak 1993 - Mart 1995 tarihleri arasında Adana İli Çukurova Tarım İşletmesinde yetiştirilen Holstein ırkı sığırlar üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Başlangıçta seçilen 75 sığır T. annulata'ya karşı antikor yönünden İFA testi ile serolojik yoklamaları yapılmış ve kan frotilerinde parazitin piroplasm formları aranmıştır. Sonuçta 15 sığırın T. annulata ile enfekte olduğu ve prevalans değerinin %20 olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu enfekte sığırların 7'sinin (%9.3) eritrositlerinde T. annulata'nm piroplasm şekilleri görülmüş, 12'sinin (16) serumunda parazite karşı antikor bulunmuştur. Enfekte sığırların 4'ünde (%5.3) ise parazitin hem piroplasm şekillerine rastlanmış, hem de serumlarında antikor tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmanın başlangıcında seçilen hayvanlardan enfekte olan 15 sığır çıkartıldıktan sonra, enfekte olmayan hayvanlardan bir yıl süreyle, ayda bir materyal toplanmıştır. Bu süre içinde yoklamaları yapılan 60 negatif sığırdan, hastalık sezonu boyunca, 1 7'sinin (%28.3) T. annulata enfeksiyonuna yakalandığı ve kümülatif seroinsidensin 0.283 olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Seropozitif bulunan 17 sığırın sadece 5'i (%8.3) piroplasm taşıyıcısı olarak bulunmuş, ancak bu çalışma süresince enfekte olan sığırların hiçbirinde klinik Theileria enfeksiyonu görülmemiştir. Ayrıca seropozitif sığırlardan doğan 0-20 günlük 4 buzağı, maternal antikorlar yönünden muayene edilmişlerdir. Bu 4 buzağının 2'sinde maternal antikor tespit edilmiş ve maternal antikor varlığı 1 buzağıda 3 ay, diğerinde 4 ay süreyle devam etmiştir. Bu buzağıların kan frotilerinin mikroskobik bakısında ise T. annulata'nm piroplasmik formlarına rastlanmamıştır. Çalışma süresi boyunca, ne sığırlarda nede buzağılarda Hyalomma soyuna bağlı kene türleri bulunamamıştır. Epidemiyolojik çalışmayı takiben, seronegatifliği devam eden 58 sığıra Mart 1994 tarihinde tropikal theileriosis'e karşı attenüe 107 T. annulata şizont aşısı uygulanmıştır. Tropikal theileriosis'e karşı aşı yapılan 58 sığırdan 45'inin (%77.5), T. annulata piroplasm ve şizont antijenine karşı antikor taşıdığı ve bunlardan 6 (%10.3) sığırın da piroplasm taşıyıcısı olduğu saptanmıştır. Ayrıca seropozitiflik 0-1 yaş grubunda aşılamadan sonra 4'üncü aydan itibaren azalarak 12 ay kadar devam ettiği halde, 1-2 yaş grubunda 3'üncü ayda düşmeye başlamış 7'inci ayda ise sıfırlanmış; 2 yaş üstü grupta seropozitiflik yine 3'üncü ayda azalmaya başlamış ve 4'üncü ayda sıfırlanmıştır. Theileria annulata piroplasm antijenine karşı antikor fitresi 1:20 ve 1:5120, şizont antijenine karşı antikor türesi 1:40 ve 1:2560 arasında49 saptanmıştır. En yüksek piroplasm ve şizont antikor türeleri 0-1 yaş grubunda Nisan ve Mayıs aylarında elde edilmiştir. Yaşları 3 ile 7 ay arasında olan 10 seronegatif buzağıya da tropikal theileriosis'e karşı attenüe 107 T. annulata şizont aşısı uygulanmıştır. Bütün buzağıların aşıdan sonra seropozitif olduğu ve 6 ay boyunca antikorların devam ettiği görülmüştür. Bu buzağıların 3'ünde T. annulata'mn piroplasm formları tespit edilmiştir. Theileria annulata piroplasm antijenine karşı antikor titresi 1:20 ve 1:10240, şizont antijenine karşı antikor titresi 1:40 ve 1:640 arasında saptanmıştır. En yüksek piroplasm ve şizont antikor türeleri Nisan ayında elde edilmiştir. Tropikal theileriosis'e karşı aşılanmış sığırlardan doğmuş 10 buzağıdan 2'sinde 2 ay süre ile maternal antikor tespit edilmiştir. Bu buzağılardan hazırlanan kan frotilerinin mikroskobik bakısında T. annulata'mn piroplasmik formlarına rastlanmamıştır. Aşılama sonrası bir yıl süreyle takip edilen sığırlar ve buzağılar üzerinde Hyalomma soyuna bağlı kene türleri bulunamamıştır. Anahtar sözcükler: sığır, tropikal theileriosis, aşı, seroepidemiyoloji 50 SUMMARY FIELD STUDİES ON THE CATTLE VACCINATED AGAINST TROPICAL THEILERIOSIS IN ÇUKUROVA REGION The present study was carried out on Holstein cattle breed in Çukurova State Farm in Adana between January 1993 and March 1995. Initially, 75 cattle were selected and tested with IFA for thelerial antibody and examined with microscope for the piroplasm of the parasite in perifery blood. The results showed that prevalance of T. annulata was 20% (15 out of 75 cattle). However the parasite, antibody and the both, the parasite and antibody, were detected in 7 (9.3%), 12 (16%) and 4 (5.3%) of the infected animals respectively. The infected 15 cattle were removed from the selected animals. The remain infection free 60 animals were used as a study sample during the tropical theileriosis season. Seventeen (28.3%) out of 60 animals became infected with T. annulata during the disease season. It showed that the cumulative incidence of T. annulata was 0,283. Only 5 (8.3%) of 17 seropositive animals carried piroplasm forms of the parasite. None of the infected animals developed clinical disease during this study period. In addition, 4 calves which were born from the seropositive cattle and were 0-20 days old were tested monthly for maternal antibody. Two of them were found to be seropositive, lasted for 3 months in the one and 4 months in the other. However, no piroplasm form of T. annulata was present in the blood smears prepared from the calves. No Hyalomma ticks were found on either cattle or calves. On the other hand, 58 seronegative cattle in the study samples were vaccinated with attenuated schizont cells in March 1994. Following the epidemiological work carried out during the year of 1993. Each animals received 107 vaccine cells. Fortyfive (77.5%) of 58 vaccinated animals became seropositive for T. annulata piroplasm and schizont antigens and 6 (1 0.3%) cattle became piroplasm carrier during the tropical theileriosis season. The remain of antibody against T. annulata in blood were 4 to 12 months for non to 1 year old animals, 3 to 7 months for 1 to 2 year old amimals and 3 to 4 months for in more than 2 year-old animals. The titre of antibody against piroplasm and schizont antigens in the blood varied3J between 1:20 and 1:5120, 1:40 and 1:2560 respectively. The peak titre was observed in non to 1 year old animals through April and May. =* In addition, 10 seronegative calves which were 3 to 7 month old were vaccinated with 107 attenuated schizont cells. All the calves became seropositive and antibody remained in the blood of the calves upto 6 months. However, theilerial piroplasms were detected in 3 out of 10 calves. The titre of antibody against piroplasm and schizont antigens in the blood varied between 1:20 and 1:10240, 1:40 and 1:640 respectively. The peak titre antibodies against piroplasm and schizont antigens were detected in April. During this study, a serological test was performed also in 10 calves born from vaccinated cattle. It showed that two of the calves carried materinal antibody for 2 months. No theilerial piroplasm was observed in these calves.
