Objectives The aim of this AFIRE (Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events With Rivaroxaban in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease) trial subgroup analysis was to examine rivaroxaban monotherapy benefits and their relation to the time between stenting and enrollment among patients after coronary stenting. Background Of 2,215 patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease in the AFIRE trial, rivaroxaban monotherapy was noninferior to rivaroxaban plus antiplatelet therapy (combination therapy) in terms of efficacy and superior for safety endpoints. However, thrombotic risk after antiplatelet therapy cessation remained a concern among 1,444 patients who had undergone coronary stenting >1 year before enrollment. Methods The benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy in coronary stenting subgroups were assessed for efficacy (a composite of stroke, systemic embolism, myocardial infarction, unstable angina requiring revascularization, or death of any cause), safety (major bleeding defined according to International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria), ischemic endpoints, net adverse clinical event, and time between stenting and enrollment. Results Efficacy and safety endpoints for monotherapy were superior to combination therapy, with HRs of 0.70 for efficacy (95% CI: 0.50-0.98; P = 0.036) and 0.55 for safety (95% CI: 0.33-0.92; P = 0.019). For ischemic endpoints, the HR was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.58-1.15; P = 0.240). The HR became smaller with longer time between stenting and enrollment (efficacy, P for interaction = 0.158; safety, P = 0.097). Conclusions In patients with atrial fibrillation after coronary stenting, the benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy for efficacy and safety endpoints were consistent with those in the whole AFIRE trial population. The benefits became apparent with longer time between stenting and enrollment. Aim To clarify the natural course of prediabetes and develop predictive models for conversion to diabetes. Methods A retrospective longitudinal study of 2105 adults with prediabetes was carried out with a mean observation period of 4.7years. Models were developed using multivariate logistic regression analysis and verified by 10-fold cross-validation. The relationship between [final BMI minus baseline BMI] (δBMI) and incident diabetes was analyzed post hoc by comparing the diabetes conversion rate for low ( 2 ) and high δBMI (≥ −0.31kg/m 2 ) subjects after matching the two groups for the covariates. Results Diabetes developed in 252 (2.5%/year), and positive family history, male sex, higher systolic blood pressure, plasma glucose (fasting and 1h- and 2h-values during 75g OGTT), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and alanine aminotransferase were significant, independent predictors for the conversion. By using a risk score (RS) that took account of all these variables, incident diabetes was predicted with an area under the ROC curve (95% CI) of 0.80 (0.70–0.87) and a specificity of prediction of 61.8% at 80% sensitivity. On division of the participants into high- ( n =248), intermediate- ( n =336) and low-risk ( n =1521) populations, the conversion rates were 40.1%, 18.5% and 5.9%, respectively. The conversion rate was lower in subjects with low than high δBMI (9.2% vs 14.4%, p =0.003). Conclusions Prediabetes conversion to diabetes could be predicted with accuracy, and weight reduction during the observation was associated with lowered conversion rate.

The (^{12}N, ^{12}C) charge-exchange reaction at 175 MeV/u was developed as a novel probe for studying the isovector spin giant monopole resonance (IVSMR), whose properties are important for better understanding the bulk properties of nuclei and asymmetric nuclear matter. This probe, now available through the production of ^{12}N as a secondary rare-isotope beam, is exothermic, is strongly absorbed at the surface of the target nucleus, and provides selectivity for spin-transfer excitations. All three properties enhance the excitation of the IVSMR compared to other, primarily light-ion, probes, which have been used to study the IVSMR thus far. The ^{90}Zr(^{12}N,^{12}C) reaction was measured and the excitation energy spectra up to about 70 MeV for both the spin-transfer and non-spin-transfer channels were deduced separately by tagging the decay by γ emission from the ^{12}C ejectile. Besides the well-known Gamow-Teller and isobaric analog transitions, a clear signature of the IVSMR was identified. By comparing with the results from light-ion reactions on the same target nucleus and theoretical predictions, the suitability of this new probe for studying the IVSMR was confirmed.

We systematically measured the differential cross sections of inelastic $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ scattering off self-conjugate $A=4n$ nuclei at two incident energies ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=130\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ and $386\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ at Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University. The measured cross sections were analyzed by the distorted-wave Born-approximation (DWBA) calculation using the single-folding potentials, which are obtained by folding macroscopic transition densities with the phenomenological $\ensuremath{\alpha}N$ interaction. The DWBA calculation with the density-dependent $\ensuremath{\alpha}N$ interaction systematically overestimates the cross sections for the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}L=0$ transitions. However, the DWBA calculation using the density-independent $\ensuremath{\alpha}N$ interaction reasonably well describes all the transitions with $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}L=0$--4. We examined uncertainties in the present DWBA calculation stemming from the macroscopic transition densities, distorting potentials, phenomenological $\ensuremath{\alpha}N$ interaction, and coupled channel effects in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. It was found that the DWBA calculation is not sensitive to details of the transition densities nor the distorting potentials, and the phenomenological density-independent $\ensuremath{\alpha}N$ interaction gives reasonable results. The coupled-channel effects are negligibly small for the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ and ${3}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, but not for the ${0}_{2}^{+}$ state. However, the DWBA calculation using the density-independent interaction at ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=386\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ is still reasonable even for the ${0}_{2}^{+}$ state. We concluded that the macroscopic DWBA calculations using the density-independent interaction are reliably applicable to the analysis of inelastic $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ scattering at ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\ensuremath{\sim}100\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{u}$.

Neutron-proton pairing correlations are investigated in detail via $np$ transfer reactions in $N=Z\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}sd$-shell nuclei. In particular, we study the cross-section ratio of the lowest ${0}^{+}$ and ${1}^{+}$ states as an observable to quantify the interplay between $T=0$ (isoscalar) and $T=1$ (isovector) pairing strengths. The experimental results are compared to second-order distorted-wave Born approximation calculations with proton-neutron amplitudes obtained in the shell-model formalism using the universal $sd$-shell interaction B. Our results suggest underestimation of the nonneglible isoscalar pairing strength in the shell-model descriptions at the expense of the isovector channel.

WOS: 000322848900009, A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of Li-6 projectiles on a carbon target at 2 A GeV was performed. Signals of the Lambda-hyperon and H-3(Lambda) and H-4(Lambda) hypernuclei were observed for final states of p + pi(-), He-3 + pi(-) and He-4 + pi(-), respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9 sigma. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be 262(-43)(+56) +/- 45 ps for Lambda, 183(-32)(+42) +/- 37 ps for H-3(Lambda), and 140(-33)(+48) +/- 35 ps for H-4(Lambda). Spectroscopy for neutron-rich nuclei 9He and 12Be has been performed by means of heavy-ion double charge exchange (HIDCX) (18O, 18Ne) reaction on stable target nuclei 9Be and 12C, respectively. Several clear peaks in 12Be at low excitation energy region even above neutron separation energy have been observed in one-shot measurement, whereas no prominent signals of 9He have been observed owing to the small cross section. It is shown that the HIDCX reaction is a new powerful spectroscopic tool for study of unstable neutron-rich nuclei.

Background: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit cognitive impairment, and evidence suggests that the semantic version of the verbal fluency task is a reliable cognitive marker of the disorder. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated the dysfunction of neural processing in acute depression and examined the effects of a 6-week pharmacological intervention. Methods: Sixteen patients with MDD participated in 2 fMRI sessions, and 16 healthy control (HC) subjects participated in 1 fMRI session. During each fMRI session, the participants performed a semantic verbal fluency task. Brain activity during the task was compared between groups (MDD 1st fMRI vs. HC) and times (MDD 1st fMRI vs. 2nd fMRI). Results: Significant brain hypoactivation was observed in MDD patients at the prefrontal, lateral parietal, and limbic regions compared to HC, and MDD patients exhibited hyperactivation at the left precuneus compared to HC. Hypoactivity of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and hyperactivity of the precuneus were normalized with treatment. Conclusions: Hypoactivation of the left DLPFC and hyperactivation of the precuneus should be considered as dysregulation of anticorrelated brain networks during a cognitive demanding task. This failure of network regulation may be an important factor in the pathophysiology of MDD.

Objective To assess the efficacy and tolerability of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), in a phase III clinical trial conducted in Japan. Methods We conducted a double-blind, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial. This was a baseline-controlled study, and the group differences were evaluated in an exploratory analysis. A total of 103 patients with active CLE (according to a Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus Disease Area and Severity Index [CLASI] activity score of ≥4) were included. Patients were randomized 3:1 to receive HCQ or placebo during the 16-week double-blind period, and all patients were given HCQ during the following 36-week single-blind period. The primary efficacy end point was a reduction in the CLASI activity score at week 16. The secondary end points included the central photo evaluation (5-point scale), patient's global assessment (7-point scale), the Skindex-29 score, and investigator's global assessment (7-point scale, based on the other 3 secondary end points). In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, fatigue and musculoskeletal pain were assessed. Safety was assessed up to week 55. Results The mean CLASI score at week 16 was significantly improved from baseline in both the HCQ group and the placebo group: mean change −4.6 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] −6.1, −3.1) (P

The alpha inelastic scattering from 24Mg was measured to obtain the isoscalar natural-parity excitation strengths and to search for the α-condensed states. The multipole decomposition analysis for the measured cross sections was performed. The strength distributions for the \({{\Delta}L=0{-}3}\) were successfully obtained and the possible candidates for the α-condensed states around the 16O core were found.

Functional neuroimaging studies on patients with depression have found abnormal activity in the left prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortex compared with healthy controls. Other studies have shown that these regions become active in healthy subjects during verbal fluency tasks, while patients with depression show impaired performance on such tasks. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate changes in cerebral blood oxygenation associated with a verbal fluency task in depressed patients and healthy volunteers. In contrast to 10 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects who activated the left prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex during word generation, 10 depressed subjects showed attenuated activation in the left prefrontal cortex and did not show significant activation in the anterior cingulate cortex. These findings suggest that impaired performance during verbal fluency task in depressed patients is associated with abnormal neural responses within these regions.

We investigated the rapid and slow effects of NaF on intracellular signaling systems such as Ca2+ homeostasis and cyclic GMP (cGMP) generation in rat glioma C6 cells, using the Ca2+-sensitive dye fura-2 and cGMP enzyme immunoassay. We found that the following: (a) NaF enhanced cGMP generation in a concentration-dependent manner. This enhancement was abolished by pretreatment with 100 microM BAPTA tetraacetoxymethal ester or in the presence of W-7 in a concentration-dependent manner. N G-Monomethyl-L-arginine (NMMA), a competitive inhibitor or nitric oxide synthase (NOS), also inhibited the NaF-induced generation of cGMP. These results suggest that NaF-induced cGMP generation occurs via a calcium/calmodulin- and NOS-dependent pathway. (b) The basal intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) was transiently greater at 1 and 3 h after pretreatment with NaF. W-7 and W-13 antagonized the increase in [Ca2+]i, whereas NMMA had little effect. This suggests that the NaF-induced change in basal [Ca2+] was mediated by a calmodulin-dependent pathway but was independent of a NOS-sensitive pathway. (c) The serotonin (5-HT)-induced intracellular mobilization of Ca2+ was reduced by pretreating the cells with NaF. The reduction in Ca2+ mobilization was antagonized by genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. W-7, W-5, and H-8 had no effect. Results suggest that NaF differentially regulated the cGMP generation. basal [Ca2+]i, and 5-HT2A receptor function in C6 glioma cells.

Background. To reveal landmarks for placing the globus pallidus interna (GPi) target on MR images, visual evoked potentials (VEPs) of the optic tract (OT) and neural activities of the GPi were studied retrospectively. Methods. The dorsal and lateral border of the OT were determined by VEPs of the OT, and neural activity in the pallidal region was recorded with a semimicro-electrode in 20 patients. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) was used to assess the condition of each patient before and 6 months and 12 months after surgery. Findings. The location of trajectories relative to the lateral border of the OT were 3 mm medial (-3) in 6, 2 mm medial (-2) in 7, 1 mm medial (-1) in 8, at the lateral border (0) in 6, 1 mm lateral (+1) in 5, 2 mm lateral (+2) in 6, and 3 mm lateral (+3) in 5. The mean amplitudes along trajectories -3 and -2 mm were significantly higher than the others (post-hoc, p < 0.01). In dorsoventral relations, the amplitudes from 5.1 mm to 6.8 mm of the medial trajectories (-3 to 0 mm) were significantly higher than others (post-hoc, p < 0.01). The lesions placed medial to the lateral border of the OT located just above the lateral border of the OT on postoperative MR images (n = 12) and brought better surgical benefits of total motor score, rigidity and bradykinesia than those placed lateral to the OT (n = 8). Interpretation: Our data indicate that hyperactive cells of the GPi are located medial to the lateral border of the OT and at least 5.1 mm above its dorsal surface, and this corresponds to the area just above the lateral border of the OT on MR images.

This open study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of valproate as a treatment for delirium and/or aggressive behavior in patients with dementia. Of the patients who participated, nine had vascular dementia, two had Alzheimer's disease, one had Parkinson's disease and one had alcohol dependence, all meeting DSM-IH-R criteria for dementia. In these 13 patients, delirium in seven and aggressive behavior in 12 patients were the target symptoms of this study. Valproate was administered orally at a dose of 200-600 mg daily (mean 526 mg, sd=20.4) without changing the dose of the other medications. The effect of valproate on delirium and aggressive behavior was evaluated with the Delirium Rating Scale (DRS) and Gottfries-Brane-Steen Scale (GBS). The total DRS scores decreased in 6/7 patients with delirium (P < 0.05) within 2 weeks. There were significant diferences between the score variances (before and during treatment) of the three categories in the GBS scale: emotional lability (P < 0.01), irritability (P < 0.01) and restlessness (P < 0.01). These findings suggest the effectiveness of valproate treatment for delirium and/or aggressive behavior in demented patients.

Hydrogen concentration in austenitic stainless steel irradiated with neutrons in boiling water reactors (BWRs) was measured and the effect of hydrogen in the austenitic stainless steel on intergranular cracking was investigated by the slow strain rate test (SSRT) in Ar gas. The hydrogen concentration decreased at low neutron fluences and increased at high neutron fluences. The decrease was attributed to the effect of heating or γ-ray irradiation at the early stage of reactor operation. The increase at high fluences was considered mainly due to the generation of hydrogen by nuclear transmutation. Intergranular cracking was not found for the specimen irradiated to a high fluence ( 1.4×10 26 n / m 2 ) in the SSRT at a very low strain rate ( 1.0×10 −8 s −1 ). This meant that the hydrogen concentration was too small to induce cracking, or hydrogen could not diffuse because of being trapped in irradiation defects at the test temperature.

In order to establish algorithms for mood disorders in Japan, over 300 psychiatrists completed a questionnaire. They were asked to recommend various drug treatments for particular cases. The order in which the drugs were recommended was taken into consideration. References were made to the randomized double blind study conducted by the working group. Evidence was ranked according to its probability, with the addition of case reports and medical opinions, since conclusions derived from the randomized double blind study alone did not give a full representation. Japanese documentation was referred to as much as possible in order to represent Japanese characteristics. Algorithms were made for eight subtypes; acute mania, bipolar depression, mild or moderate, severe major depression, psychotic depression, rapid cycling bipolar disorder, dysthymic disorder and major depression with advanced cancer. Major depression and bipolar disorder algorithms are discussed in this paper. Clinical psychopharmacological evidence in Japan was insufficient to generate these algorithms for mood disorders. These algorithms may need revision according to future advances in clinical psychopharmacology. (Int J Psych Clin Pract 1999; 3: 277-285).

The neural activity pattern of the subthalmic nucleus (STN) was investigated in five patients with Parkinson's disease who were scheduled for electrode implantation for chronic stimulation of the STN. The initial target was placed 8 mm or 10 mm lateral to the midline, 3 mm to 4 mm posterior to the midcommissural point, and 5 mm to 6 mm below the intercommissural (AC-PC) line. The STN was identified by semi-microelectrode recordings with a trajectory moving laterally in 2-mm steps. The amplitudes of multi-unit activities were relatively low at depths from 8 mm to 5 mm above and from 1 mm to 4 mm below the target, while those 4 mm to 0 mm above the target were significantly higher than at the other sites (ANOVA, Fisher's test, p0.05), with the highest amplitude at 2 mm above the target (91.0 +/- 23.3 mu v, n = 15). In the mediolateral direction, amplitudes were relatively higher in the lateral portion, and amplitudes at 14 mm lateral to the midline were significantly higher than at the other sites (ANOVA, Fisher's test, p0.05). The target for chronic electrical stimulation was determined to be at the midpoint of the hyperactive STN, i.e., 12 mm lateral to the midline in three patients and 13 mm lateral in two patients. Movement-related neural activity was observed at 5 sites, i.e., 3 sites responded to passive movement of the contralateral wrist and 2 sites to passive knee and/or ankle movement. In conclusion, our data show that the lateral part of the STN is hyperactive in PD, and recordings of neural activities contributed greatly to identifying the STN and determining the target for chronic stimulation within it.

Recently, dantrolene has been reported to affect the central nervous system in addition to peripheral targets such as skeletal muscle. We examined effects of dantrolene on K(+)- and caffeine-induced dopamine release in rat striatum using in vivo microdialysis. Perfusion with KCl via the dialysis probe for 20 min induced immediate increase in DA release. Either chelation of extracellular calcium or addition of dantrolene for 120 min preceded reapplication of 100 mM KCl for 20 min. Calcium chelation attenuated the increase in DA release induced by KCl. Application of dantrolene enhanced the KCl-induced increase in DA release, but this effect disappeared at 100 microM. Caffeine caused a dose-dependent increase in dopamine release, independently of extracellular calcium. Treatment with 100 microM dantrolene for 120 min reduced the increase in DA release induced by caffeine. These findings that dantrolene modulates dopamine release in rat striatum indicate that conventionally administered dantrolene is likely to act on the central nervous system.

Dantrolene has been known to affect intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) by inhibiting Ca2+ release from intracellular stores in cultured neurons. We were interested in examining this property of dantrolene in influencing the [Ca2+]i affected by the NMDA receptor ligands, KCl, L-type Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine, and two other intracellular Ca2(+)-mobilizing agents caffeine and bradykinin. Effect of dantrolene on the spontaneous oscillation of [Ca2+]i was also examined. Dantrolene in microM concentrations dose-dependently inhibited the increase in [Ca2+]i elicited by NMDA and KCl. AP-5, MK-801 (NMDA antagonists), and nifedipine respectively reduced the NMDA and KCl-induced increase in [Ca2+]i. Dantrolene, added to the buffer solution together with the antagonists or nifedipine, caused a further reduction in [Ca2+]i to a degree similar to that seen with dantrolene alone inhibiting the increase in [Ca2+]i caused by NMDA or KCl. At 30 microM, dantrolene partially inhibited caffeine-induced increase in [Ca2+]i whereas it has no effect on the bradykinin-induced change in [Ca2+]i. The spontaneous oscillation of [Ca2+]i in frontal cortical neurons was reduced both in amplitude and in base line concentration in the presence of 10 microM dantrolene. Our results indicate that dantrolene's mobilizing effects on intracellular Ca2+ stores operate independently from the influxed Ca2+ and that a component of the apparent increase in [Ca2+]i elicited by NMDA or KCl represents a dantrolene-sensitive Ca2+ release from intracellular stores. Results also suggest that dantrolene does not affect the IP3-gated release of intracellular Ca2+ and that the spontaneous Ca2+ oscillation is, at least partially, under the control of Ca2+ mobilization from internal stores.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of mianserin and trazodone as antidepressants with serotonin 2 antagonist properties on negative symptoms and tardive dyskinesia in elderly patients with chronic schizophrenia. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study the dose of each drug was increased gradually, from 20 mg/day mianserin to 60 mg/day, and from 50 mg/day trazodone to 200 mg/day. Symptoms were assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, the Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms and the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale every week for 5 weeks. A total of 38 patients (23 men and 15 women) completed the trial. Mianserin (n = 13) and trazodone (n = 12) did not alter the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale positive symptom factor over the 5 weeks. In the mianserin group, the Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms total score decreased significantly after 5 weeks. Scores of 'affective flattening and blunting' and 'alogia' scores on the Scale for assessment of Negative Symptoms decreased significantly in both treatment groups. In the trazodone group, the decrease in the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale total score was statistically significant at weeks 2 and 3. Results indicate that serotonergic antidepressants, when used in conjunction with neuroleptics, are safe and effective for treating negative symptoms in elderly patients with chronic schizophrenia. Results also indicated a possible beneficial effect of trazodone in treating tardive dyskinesia.

Acute (1 h) intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment with interferon (IFN)-alpha-2a (300 IU/g) significantly inhibited wet-dog shakes (WDS) induced by (+/-)-1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2 aminopropane (DOI; 0.5, 1.0 mg/kg), which is mediated by serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT)2 receptor in rats. IFN-alpha did not affect spontaneous locomotion. The inhibition of DOI (0.5 mg/kg)-induced WDS by IFN-alpha was dose (90-300 IU/g)- and time (1-6 h)-dependent, and was prevented by 30 min pretreatment with naltrexone (NLTX; 1.0 mg/kg, i.p.), an opioid receptor antagonist. Acute (1 h) intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) treatment with IFN-alpha (1,500 IU/rat) also inhibited DOI (0.5 mg/kg)-induced WDS, and the effect was blocked by NLTX (50 micrograms/rat, i.c.v.). These results suggest that IFN-alpha may modulate 5-HT2 receptor-mediated behavior through opioid receptors in the central nervous system.

Current data analyses have preliminary shown peaks in invariant mass distributions of p + pi(-) for Lambda, He-3 + pi(-) for H-3(Lambda) and He-4 + pi(-) for H-4(Lambda). The effect of chronic treatment with a tryptophan (TRP)-free diet on the free-running circadian wheel-running rhythm and the central serotonergic system was investigated in blinded male rats. The long-term TRP-free diet did not change periods of activity, but disordered their patterns. This seemed to be due to masking, entrainment, enhancement of the morning activity, and obscuring of the activity onset as well as appearance of some periodic activities within the subjective night. A long-term TRP-free diet decreased the concentration of TRP, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in all brain regions tested: frontal cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, midbrain, and pons. Density of 5-HT 1A receptor binding was significantly decreased in the frontal cortex and hypothalamus, whereas no significant change was observed in the density of 5-HT 2 receptor binding in all regions. These results suggest that the period of primary circadian pacemaker is not affected, but its oscillation, as well as the coupling strength between the primary and secondary pacemakers, is weakened by the dysfunction of the serotonergic system caused by chronic TRP depletion.

We have developed an artificial organ conditioning system in order not only to condition but also evaluate the viability for transplant graft of kidneys which have been stored for a long time and damaged by warm ischaemia following cardiac arrest. The conditioning system consisted of an artificial lung, a roller pump, an organ chamber and perfusate. The perfusate was prepared with electrolytes, fluorocarbon, amino acid, glucose, an oxygen scavenger and so on. Conditioning was performed by continuous perfusion under mild hypothermia at 24° C. Mildly damaged kidneys (0 and 30 minutes warm ischaemia rabbit kidneys) were well conditioned but severely damaged kidneys failed to produce urination. Our device successfully exposed the viability of stored kidneys and the successful conditioning of damaged kidneys due to warm ischaemia avoiding transplantation. By establishing our method, the harvesting of kidneys following cardiac arrest will be feasible.

The alpha inelastic scattering from 24Mg was measured to obtain the isoscalar natural-parity excitation strengths and to search for the α-condensed states. The multipole decomposition analysis for the measured cross sections was performed. The strength distributions for the ΔL = 0–3 were successfully obtained and the possible candidates for the α-condensed states around the 16O core were found.

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was applied to the measurement of superfluid turbulence properties of the thermal counterflow jet in He II. Neutrally buoyant hydrogen‐deuterium micro solid particles were used as tracers for PIV. For the sake of comparison, A He II co‐flow jet driven by a bellows pump was also measured with PIV. The velocity profile and the spatial decay of the jet velocity were investigated by comparing with those of round turbulent jets of viscous fluids. In the thermal counterflow, the probability distribution of the axial component of the turbulent velocity was also investigated. It was found that the distribution function is rather close to the normal distribution in the vicinity of the nozzle exit on the center‐line of a jet.

A Web browser based interface that specialized in numerical calculation was developed. It includes functions to set parameters, execute calculations and display results for numerical calculations. The calculation result is put in a database, so we can browse, sort or search the results by a variety of keywords. It allows us to share the results with other users. Our intent is to provide an efficient means for setting parameters and result analysis. In this system, Web clients can use the interface on any platform and there is no load for the client side, because PHP scripts on the server handle all of the processes for numerical calculation. Moreover, a Web browser interface for mobile phones was developed to browse the calculation results practically and to reduce idle computer time. It is possible to set parameters and execution through the special Web form for mobile phones. In addition to this, the server informs the mobile phone user when the calculation is finished. Through this process, we realized effective utilization of computer resources.

The failure voltage of cascoded drivers in IO cells is influenced most by the bottom NMOS. The failure voltage improves if the gate is tied to ground. A solution with only one additional transistor to increase the failure voltage of a level-shifter circuit with cascoded NMOS drivers is presented.

Purpose: In respiratory-gated radiotherapy, the gating phase during treatment delivery needs to coincide with the corresponding phase determined during the treatment plan. However, because radiotherapy is performed based on the image obtained for the treatment plan, the time delay, motion artifact, volume effect, and resolution in the images are uncertain. Thus, imaging uncertainty is the most basic factor that affects the localization accuracy. Therefore, these uncertainties should be analyzed. This study aims to analyze the total imaging uncertainty in respiratory-gated radiotherapy. Methods: Two factors of imaging uncertainties related to respiratory-gated radiotherapy were analyzed. First, CT image was used to determine the target volume and 4D treatment planning for the Varian Realtime Position Management (RPM) system. Second, an X-ray image was acquired for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) for the BrainLAB ExacTrac system. These factors were measured using a respiratory gating phantom. The conditions applied during phantom operation were as follows: respiratory wave form, sine curve; respiratory cycle, 4 s; phantom target motion amplitude, 10, 20, and 29 mm (which is maximum phantom longitudinal motion). The target and cylindrical marker implanted in the phantom coverage of the CT images was measured and compared with the theoretically calculated coverage from the phantom motion. Themore » theoretical position of the cylindrical marker implanted in the phantom was compared with that acquired from the X-ray image. The total imaging uncertainty was analyzed from these two factors. Results: In the CT image, the uncertainty between the target and cylindrical marker’s actual coverage and the coverage of CT images was 1.19 mm and 2.50mm, respectively. In the Xray image, the uncertainty was 0.39 mm. The total imaging uncertainty from the two factors was 1.62mm. Conclusion: The total imaging uncertainty in respiratory-gated radiotherapy was clinically acceptable. However, an internal margin should be added to account for the total imaging uncertainty.« less

Cross sections for the alpha inelastic scattering exciting the low-lying monopole states in 12C, 16O, 24Mg, 28Si, and 40Ca were measured and compared with the distorted- wave Born-approximation (DWBA) calculation to examine the puzzle of the missing monopole strength of the Hoyle state. It was found the DWBA calculation using the density-dependent aN interaction systematically overestimates the cross sections for the 0+ transitions, and the puzzle is a universal problem in light nuclei but not special in the Hoyle state. Since the DWBA calculation using the density-independent interaction reasonably well reproduces the experiment, this puzzle might be related to the density dependence of the effective interaction. The coupled-channel effect for the alpha inelastic scattering is also examined. The coupled- channel effect reduces the calculated cross section, and solve the puzzle of the missing monopole strengths in part, but the improvement of the density dependence of the effective interaction is still necessary to solve the puzzle.

Background and Purpose We previously found that silent cerebral infarction (SCI) is present in most patients older than 50 years with major depression. The present study was designed to clarify the response to antidepressant pharmacotherapy in patients with major depression associated with SCI. Methods Using clinical charts, we retrospectively studied patients older than 50 years who were admitted for antidepressant drug therapy. Patients with bipolar affective disorder and those with focal neurological symptoms were excluded. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging and were classified as SCI-negative or SCI-positive. The SCI-positive group was subclassified into those with moderate SCI (either perforating area or cortical area) (n=15) and those with severe SCI (both perforating and cortical areas) (n=7). Duration of treatment in hospital and the incidence of central nervous system adverse reactions to the antidepressant drugs were compared between the two groups. Results The duration of hospital treatment in patients with severe SCI was significantly longer than in those with moderate SCI ( P P P Conclusions Depressed patients with severe SCI required longer hospital treatment and had more drug-related adverse reactions of the central nervous system. These findings suggest that the depression associated with severe SCI may be resistant to treatment.

Behavioral disinhibition in Go/No-Go task is thought to be associated with impulsiveness in humans. Recent imaging studies showed that neural circuits involving diverse areas of the frontal cortex and other association cortex sites such as the parietal cortex are implicated in the inhibition of response during No-Go trials. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between regional cerebral activation during No-Go trials and impulsiveness. Seventeen right-handed healthy volunteers participated in the study. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure the brain activation during a Go/No-Go task. The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, 11(th) version (BIS-11) was used to measure impulsiveness. Activated regions included the right middle frontal gyrus and the inferior parietal lobe, which is consistent with previous neuroimaging studies. A negative correlation was observed between the motor impulsiveness of BIS-11 and No-Go-related activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (RDLPFC). Our results suggest that the RDLPFC is the area most sensitive to differences in individual motor impulsiveness and its activity may be an indicator of the individual capacity for response inhibition.

Multimedia applications treat two types of media: one is a real-time medium such as voice or video, and the other is a non-real-time medium. For the widespread use of the multimedia applications, a local area network (LAN) must support communication needed to transfer both types of media. A LAN based on the asynchronous transfer mode technology is considered to be promising as a candidate for a multimedia LAN. Especially, an ATM switching system is regarded as adequate for the reason that it has scalability in the capacity. However, though many researchers are studying how to offer a connectionless service, how to achieve fast and fair dynamic bandwidth allocation and so forth in the ATM switching system, these issues are not completely resolved. For another approach, we are developing a shared-media LAN based upon the ATM technology. The ATM ring (ATMR), which is a shared-media ATM-LAN, is evaluated as a multimedia LAN. Requirements for a multimedia LAN are described, and the current issues of the ATM switching system are described. The ATMR protocol and its characteristics are explained and the ATMR prototype is assessed. Finally, the future work and conclusions are presented.
