In 2018 the Municipal Health Department of the city of Diadema, São Paulo, Brazil, started the implementation of strategies to promote, protect and support breastfeeding in health surveillance actions. Supervised compliance with the Brazilian Standards of Commercialization of Foods for Infants and Children of 1st Childhood, nipples, pacifiers and bottles and encouraged the installation of breast-feeding support rooms in public and private workplaces in the city, aiming to intervene in the infant mortality rates. According to the Global Strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO/UNICEF), for the Feeding of Infants and Children in the First Childhood, only 35% of children worldwide are breastfed exclusively during the first four months of life. What are the contributions of the surveillance area in encouraging the installation of breast-feeding facilities in the workplace? What are the responsibilities of the Health Surveillance to promote breastfeeding? The strategies implemented aimed to create a culture of respect and support for breastfeeding as a way to promote the health of the working woman and her baby, bringing direct benefits to society.The importance of women in promoting breastfeeding is evident, but it is essential to implement public policies. The surveillance began to integrate the municipal network of incentive to breastfeeding in search of the integrality of the attention aiming to contribute to increase the rates of breastfeeding in the city. Measures of a supervisory nature were implemented to comply with the rules that protect the practice of breastfeeding, in order to avoid early weaning and to reduce infant mortality. Intra and intersectoral strategies, permanent education and awareness-raising among professionals and the population were used. Isolated and fragmented initiatives do not contribute to structuring a breastfeeding support network in the workplace and many companies have not expressed an interest in promoting breastfeeding space. Key messages Dissemination of the pro-breastfeeding culture in which the workplace is a mainstay for a network of support for working women. Surveillance Area acted in the Network of Women’s and Children’s Health Care contributing to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and healthy infant development.

Summary Background & aims The associations between dietary magnesium intake and stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidences are inconsistent and not established in Asian. We aimed to determine the association between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of stroke and CHD in a Japanese population. Subjects/Methods We studied 85,293 Japanese subjects by questionnaire at baseline (age 45–74 years, without cardiovascular disease or cancer in 1995 and 1998 for Cohorts I and II, respectively). The participants were followed until the end of 2009 and 2010 in Cohorts I and II, respectively. Dietary magnesium intake was estimated from a self-administered 138-item food-frequency questionnaire. Results After 1,305,738 person-years of follow-up, 4110 strokes and 1283 cases of CHD were documented. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs, 95% confidence intervals, 95%CIs) of CHD for the fourth and fifth quintiles of dietary magnesium intake were 0.70 (0.50–0.99) and 0.66 (0.44–0.97) in men (P for trend = 0.036), respectively, and third quintile of dietary magnesium intake was 0.61 (0.39–0.96) in women (P for trend = 0.241), compared with the lowest quintile in men and women. We observed no decreased risks of incident stroke in men or women with higher dietary magnesium intakes. Conclusions Higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with a reduced risk of CHD in Japanese men.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of size specific dose estimates (SSDE) to estimate patient dose in Fast kVp switching dual energy CT. An anthropomorphic phantom (RAN-110) was repeatedly scanned (chest, abdomen and the pelvis) using a 64 detector row MDCT (Discovery CT750 HD, GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI, USA) with various CT parameters, including Fast kVp switching. Dosimetry was performed using thermo-luminescent dosimeters, positioned both superficially and within the phantom. SSDE was calculated for all slices of the anthropomorphic phantom using both the localiser and axial images. In Fast kVp switching, SSDE underestimated the measured absorbed dose for the chest/abdomen region ~35% at the maximum, but were in closer agreement for the pelvic region about within 10%. In single energy techniques, SSDE could not be applied in the estimation of organ doses, but in Fast kVp switching dual energy techniques, SSDE could be applied for anatomical regions with larger thicknesses.

Introduction Wound healing is a biological process directed to the restoration of tissue that has suffered an injury. One of the important functions of wound healing is individual and collective cellular migration. This migration response can largely dictate the outcomes and success of a healing wound. Mitophagy, autophagic degradation of mitochondria, sequesters damaged mitochondria and functions as the essential quality control (QC) system of this organelle. When mitophagy is disturbed, damaged mitochondria are not cleared and will produce superoxide, imposing a risk for cell death. Our previous study documented a compromised mitophagy response in burns, suggestive of poor QC of mitochondria in the severely burned subjects. The relationship between defects in mitophagy response and cellular regeneration capacity was not investigated in detail. We have previously shown that trehalose can serve as an important autophagy modulator and ameliorates the defect in mitophay response. Thus we investigated whether trehalose could improve poor regeneration capacity caused by defects in mitophagy response under burn or oxidative stress in myocytes. Methods We examined the effect of trehalose on migration by performing a wound-healing scratch assay. C2C12 myocyte was cultured on 6cm dishes to 95–100% confluence, the cells were treated with or without trehalose for 1 hour before the scratch. The wound was made by scratching a line across the bottom of the dish. By incubating the cells with day 3 burn or sham-burn serum harvested from rats (30%, systemic burn), To simulate the burn injury and/or oxidative stress in diseases, cells were primed with a serum derived from rats with 40% burn injury (or sham-burn control), or with or without hydrogen peroxide treatment. Nine hours later, the gap obtained by scratching a line in C2C12 was observed by time-lapse microscopy. Results Oxidative stress decreased the gap closure of C2C12 and delayed wound healing. Under the oxidative stress, the gap closure in C2C12 treated with trehalose is significantly higher than that C2C12 treated without trehalose (54.6 vs 79.1%; p< 0.05). Similarly, burn stress showed a slower the gap closure of C2C12. Among the burn groups with or without trehalose treatment, the gap closure in C2C12 treated with trehalose is also higher than that C2C12 treated without trehalose. Conclusions Using a cell culture system simulating the two models of critical illnesses (oxidative stress and burn injury), we found that mitigating the defect of mitophagy response by trehalose treatment can improve poor regeneration capacity under burn or oxidative stress in myocytes. Applicability of Research to Practice This is the first study that demonstrated that defects in mitophagy response under disease conditions can serve a novel therapeutic target for enhancing the regeneration capacity in critically ill patients.

IntroductionOxidative stress is considered an essential mechanism in ICU-acquired weakness. The roles of oxidative stress in autophagy/mitophagy dysfunction remains elusive. Microtubule serves as an essential guide rail for auto/mitophagosome trafficking required for proper maturation of auto/mitophagosomes in normal circumstances, and microtubules network formation is regulated by signal transduction mechanisms involving Akt, GSK3β, and the microtubule plus-end tracking molecule, EB1. We have investigated (1) whether oxidative stress affects this pathway, leading to the defective mitophagy response, and (2) whether trehalose, an auto/mitophagy modulator, can ameliorate these pathological conditions.MethodsBy stably transfecting markers for auto/mitophagy or MT synthesis, we have established a few new C2C12 myocyte cell lines, expressing, GFP-LC3, EB1-GFP, and/or tandem-fluorescence LC3 (tfLC3). To monitor microtubule network, the cells were stained by SiR-tubulin. The cells were cultured in the presence or absence of oxidative stress by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and treated with or without trehalose. The response of mitophagy parameters including vesicle motion and the maturation status was monitored by stimulating the cells with carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone (CCCP), an established mitophagy inducer, under a time-lapse confocal microscopy. Signal transduction mechanisms linking mitophagy to microtubule formation was analyzed by Western Blotting against Akt and GSK3β.ResultsCells under the oxidative stress, showed abolished MT network formation, decreased microtubule synthesis by EB1, and a decrease in CCCP-invoked response of mitophagosome motion, perturbed mitophagosome maturation, and increased superoxide production. Signal resistance of Akt/GSK3β pathway to mitophagic stimulation, was documented. Trehalose treatment reversed signal resistance, diminished MT synthesis, ameliorated the disturbed MT network, and improved maturation defects, suppressing the production of superoxide.ConclusionsOxidative stress decreases the response of mitophagy and abolishes microtubule network. Trehalose improves the synthetic ability of microtubule and normalized the disturbed microtubule network, resulting in the improvement of the perturbed mitophagosomes maturation under the oxidative stress.

The segregation of avirulence/virulence was studied in 115 F1 progeny isolates of Magnaporthe oryzae from a cross of two field isolates on three Japanese race-differential rice cultivars Kanto 51, Fukunishiki, and Toride 1. The χ2 tests of goodness-of-fit for a 1:1 ratio indicated that avirulence on cvs. Kanto 51, Fukunishiki, and Toride 1 was under monogenic control. The relationship between the avirulence (Avr) gene in the parental isolate and the Avr gene in the standard isolate was investigated by using 100 lines each of three F3 families from the crosses of the rice cultivars Norin 3/Kanto 51, AK61/Fukunishiki, and Norin 3/Toride 1, respectively. Based on the resistant reactions of the F3 rice lines to the parental isolates and the standard isolates harboring three known Avr genes, three genetically independent Avr genes, AvrPik, AvrPiz, and AvrPiz-t, were identified. The three identified Avr genes were mapped using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis, and a partial linkage map was constructed with 17 RAPD markers closely linked to the Avr genes. Twelve markers and AvrPik, three markers and AvrPiz, and two markers and AvrPiz-t, as well as mating locus MAT1, constructed linkage groups A, B, and C, respectively.

The emission angle and the transverse momentum distributions of projectile fragments (PFs) produced in fragmentation of 28Si on C and CH2 targets at 775 A. MeV are measured. It is found that the mean emission angle and the mean transverse momentum increase with the decrease of the charge of PFs for the same target, and no obvious dependence of angular and transverse momentum distribution on the mass of target nucleus are found for the same PF. The cumulative squared transverse momentum distribution of PF can be well explained by a single Rayleigh distribution. The temperature of PF emission source do not depend on the size of PF and mass of target for PF with charge 5 ≤ Z < 13.

The total charge-changing cross sections and the partial cross sections of silicon ions on carbon and polyethylene targets are studied at 788 A MeV by using CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors. The results are compared with other experimental and theoretical results. The obvious even-odd effect for partial cross sections is observed.

Background Few studies have assessed associations of non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (NEAC) in the overall diet with all-cause or specific mortality, and their results have been inconsistent. Objectives The present study investigated the association between dietary NEAC and all-cause or cause-specific mortality. Methods The study was a large-scale population-based prospective cohort study in Japan consisting of 42,520 men and 50,207 women aged 44-76 y, who had no history of cancer, stroke, ischemic heart disease, or chronic liver disease. We evaluated FFQ-based dietary NEAC with use of published databases in which the NEACs of individual foods were analyzed by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Dietary NEAC was calculated by multiplying the estimated NEAC with the consumed amount and summing up those values for all foods, and was categorized in quartiles. We identified death and cause of death with use of residential registry and death certificates. HRs and 95% Cls for death from the second survey, which was conducted from April 1995 to December 2014 were estimated with Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Results After 1,498,308 person-years of follow-up, 12,978 total deaths occurred. The multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% Cls) for all-cause mortality for the highest compared with the lowest quartile of FRAP and ORAC were 0.85 (0.80, 0.89) and 0.84 (0.79, 0.89), respectively. Dietary NEACs were inversely associated with mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD), but not from cancer. The multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% Cls) for CVD for the highest compared with the lowest quartile of FRAP and ORAC were 0.83 (0.75, 0.92) and 0.79 (0.70, 0.89), respectively. Conclusions Higher dietary NEACs from FRAP and ORAC were associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality and mortality from CVD in Japanese adults.

The purpose of this study was to concomitantly determine oxidative DNAdamage and bone resorption following a rapid body mass reduction in association with energy restriction and exercise training, considering 17β-estradiol level, in female collegiate judokas. Eighteen nationally ranked university female judokas were enrolled as participants in this study. All participants continuously managed to reduce their body mass 8 days just before a competition. To detect cumulative effects of oxidative DNA damage and bone resorption, urinary samples were collected in the morning on three different days (Day 1= the beginning of body mass reduction; Day 4=mid-term of body mass reduction; Day 7=the day before the competition) for the later analysis of 8-hydroxy-2’- deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as well as cross-linked N-terminal telopeptides of Type I collagen (NTx). Urinary 8-OHdG and NTx levels were determined with high performance liquid chromatography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. No significant alterations were observed in urinary 8-OHdG or NTx levels over a rapid body mass reduction period. The findings of the present study indicate that female judokas appear to have relatively less oxidative DNA damage determined by quantification of 8-OHdG and bone resorption over a rapid body mass reduction period, potentially due to the enhanced endogenous defense responses (training adaptation). These data can provide athletes and coaches with valuable information in considering an optimal body mass management program to avoid detrimental physiological and biological conditions.

Aims Coping strategies may be significantly associated with health outcomes. This is the first study to investigate the association between baseline coping strategies and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality in a general population cohort. Methods and results The Japan Public Health Center-based prospective Study asked questions on coping in its third follow-up survey (2000–04). Analyses on CVD incidence and mortality included 57 017 subjects aged 50–79 without a history of CVD and who provided complete answers on approach- and avoidance-oriented coping behaviours and strategies. Cox regression models, adjusted for confounders, were used to determine hazard ratios (HRs) according to coping style. Mean follow-up time was 7.9 years for incidence and 8.0 years for mortality. The premorbid use of an approach-oriented coping strategy was inversely associated with incidence of stroke (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73–1.00) and CVD mortality (HR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.55–0.99). Stroke subtype analyses revealed an inverse association between the approach-oriented coping strategy and incidence of ischaemic stroke (HR = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.64–0.98) and a positive association between the combined coping strategy and incidence of intra-parenchymal haemorrhage (HR = 2.03; 95% CI, 1.01–4.10). Utilizing an avoidance coping strategy was associated with increased mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) only in hypertensive individuals (HR = 3.46; 95% CI, 1.07–11.18). The coping behaviours fantasizing and positive reappraisal were associated with increased risk of CVD incidence (HR = 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03–1.50) and reduced risk of IHD mortality (HR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.40–0.99), respectively. Conclusion An approach-oriented coping strategy, i.e. proactively dealing with sources of stress, may be associated with significantly reduced stroke incidence and CVD mortality in a Japanese population-based cohort.

The total charge-changing cross sections and the partial cross sections of projectile fragment production of the fragmentation of silicon ions on polyethylene target at 800 A · MeV are measured using CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector. The total charge-changing cross sections of silicon ions on polyethylene targets at 800 A · MeV is 761 ± 24 mb, which agree well with the prediction of Bradt-Peters semi-empirical formula using parameter r 0 = 1.31fm and b = 0.94 within experimental errors. The obvious even-odd effect is observed for the partial cross sections in present investigation.

The emission angle and the transverse momentum distributions of projectile fragments (PFs) produced in fragmentation of silicon on carbon and polyethylene targets at 800 A MeV are measured. It is found that the angular and transverse distribution of PFs do not evidently depend on the mass of target nucleus, the averaged emission angle and transverse momentum decrease with increase of the charge of PF for the same target, and no obvious dependence on the target mass is found for the same PF. The cumulated squared transverse momentum distribution of PF can be well explained by a single Rayleigh distribution. The temperature parameter of PF emission source is determined, which is about 2-4 MeV and independent of the target and PF size.

Summary Objectives: When patients complete questionnaires during health checkups, many of their responses are subjective, making topic extraction difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a model capable of extracting appropriate topics from subjective data in questionnaires conducted during health checkups. Methods: We employed a latent topic model to group the lifestyle habits of the study participants and represented their responses to items on health checkup questionnaires as a probability model. For the probability model, we used latent Dirichlet allocation to extract 30 topics from the questionnaires. According to the model parameters, a total of 4381 study participants were then divided into groups based on these topics. Results from laboratory tests, including blood glucose level, triglycerides, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, were compared between each group, and these results were then compared with those obtained by hierarchical clustering. Results: If a significant (p < 0.05) difference was observed in any of the laboratory measurements between groups, it was considered to indicate a questionnaire response pattern corresponding to the value of the test result. A comparison between the latent topic model and hierarchical clustering grouping revealed that, in the latent topic model method, a small group of participants who reported having subjective signs of uri-nary disorder were allocated to a single group. Conclusions: The latent topic model is useful for extracting characteristics from a small number of groups from questionnaires with a large number of items. These results show that, in addition to chief complaints and history of past illness, questionnaire data obtained during medical checkups can serve as useful judgment criteria for assessing the conditions of patients.

Background and aims Higher intake of fish or n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been associated with reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, it is unclear whether increased blood levels of n-3 PUFAs are associated with reduced risk of CHD in the Japanese population. Methods The relationship between circulating levels of n-3 PUFAs (eicosapentaenoic acid + docosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid) and risk of CHD was examined in a nested case-control study among participants in the Japan Public Health Center (JPHC)-based Study Cohort. Plasma n-3 PUFA phospholipid levels were measured at baseline by gas chromatography in 209 cases with CHD and 418 controls matched for sex, age, date of blood draw, time elapsed since last meal before blood collection, and study location. The CHD cases (n = 209) comprised 168 cases of myocardial infarction and 41 of sudden cardiac death, otherwise classified as 157 non-fatal and 52 fatal coronary events, respectively. Mean duration of follow-up was 13.5 years. Results Multivariate conditional logistic analysis showed no significant association between n-3 PUFAs and risk of total CHD. The odds ratio (OR) for the highest versus lowest quartiles of plasma n-3 PUFAs was 0.79 (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.41–1.51, p for trend = 0.51). Subtype analysis of CHD revealed that the multivariate ORs for the highest versus lowest quartiles for n-3 PUFAs were 0.91 (95% CI: 0.43–1.89, p for trend = 0.90) for myocardial infarction, 0.08 (95% CI: 0.01–0.88, p for trend = 0.04) for sudden cardiac death, 0.89 (95% CI: 0.42–1.89, p for trend = 0.97) for nonfatal coronary events, and 0.12 (95% CI: 0.02–0.75, p for trend = 0.03) for fatal coronary events. Conclusions Plasma n-3 PUFA levels were not associated with risk of total CHD but were inversely associated with risks of sudden cardiac death and fatal coronary events among middle-aged Japanese individuals.

Seafood/fish intake has been regarded as a protective factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), while smoking is a strong risk factor. To examine whether associations between smoking and risk of CHD are modified by seafood/fish intake, we studied 72,012 Japanese men and women aged 45-74 years who completed 2 food frequency questionnaires, 5 years apart, during the period 1995-2009. After 878,163 person-years of follow-up, 584 incident cases of CHD (101 fatal and 483 nonfatal), including 516 myocardial infarctions, were documented. There was a clear dose-response association between smoking and CHD risk among subjects with a low seafood/fish intake (

Uncinaria spp. parasites were collected from two Tsushima leopard cats found on Tsushima Island, Nagasaki prefecture, Japan. One Uncinaria sp. was observed in the large intestines, and the other was observed in the small intestines. The nematode found in the large intestines was determined to be Uncinaria felidis by morphological identification. The other Uncinaria sp. found in the small intestines was morphologically different from U. felidis in the short-length of prevulvar flap. After isolation of genomic DNA of these worms, a second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA was amplified and sequenced using PCR techniques. The ITS2 region of U. felidis had 222 nucleotide sequences in length. The alignments of ITS2 sequence for Uncinaria felidis and Uncinaria sp. showed one nucleotide (0.45 %) replacement. These differrences may be regarded as intraspecific variation.

Gas electron multipliers with a liquid crystal polymer insulator (LCP-GEMs) can be employed as X-ray polarimeters in several satellite missions in low-earth orbit. To evaluate their resistance to radiation, LCP-GEMs were exposed to Fe ion and proton beams from the heavy-ion accelerator facility HIMAC, and the gas gain was monitored. The LCP-GEMs survived 14.4-year-equivalent irradiation by fully stripped Fe ions with an energy of 500 MeV nuc-1, which simulated galactic cosmic-ray ions. We also studied the degradation of the insulator layer of the LCP-GEMs by irradiation with 160 MeV protons to simulate geomagnetically trapped protons. After irradiation with protons for 31.6 years equivalent, no significant change in gain was observed.

Background Living alone has been suggested as a risk factor for suicide. However, the effect on suicide risk of living together with spouse, child(ren) and parent(s) is unclear. This study aims to examine the association between living arrangements with spouse, child(ren), and parent(s) and suicide in a Japanese men and women. Methods Altogether 104, 528 participants aged 40–69 years, who completed baseline questionnaire (1990–1994), were followed for death through December 2005. We used Cox proportional hazards regression model to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for suicide according to living arrangements. Results During an average 13.2-year follow up, 406 suicidal deaths were recorded. Men living without a spouse and women living with a parent(s) only were at increased risk of suicide than those living with a spouse only. The multivariate HR (95% CI) in men were as follows: “living with a parent(s) only”, 1.86 (1.03–3.36); “living with a child(ren) only”, 2.20 (1.32–3.66); “living with a parent(s) and child(ren)”, 1.95 (1.02–3.72); and “living alone”, 1.80 (0.99–3.25); and in women was as follow “living with a parent(s) only”, 3.80 (1.90–7.61). Suicide risk was significantly decreased among women living with a spouse and child(ren) as compared with women living with a spouse only (HR 0.58, 95%CI 0.34 to 0.98). Conclusions Men living without a spouse and women living with a parent(s) only were at increased risk of suicide. Women living together with a spouse and child(ren) were at decreased risk of suicide.

DNA markers that allow for identification of resistance genes in rice germplasm have a great advantage in resistance breeding because they can assess the existence of the genes without laborious inoculation tests. Functional markers (FMs), which are designed from functional polymorphisms within the sequence of genes, are unaffected by nonfunctional allelic variation and make it possible to identify an individual gene. We previously showed that the resistance function of the rice blast resistance gene Pit in a resistant cultivar, K59, was mainly acquired by up-regulated promoter activity through the insertion of a long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon upstream of Pit. Here, we developed PCR-based DNA markers derived from the LTR-retrotransposon sequence and used these markers to screen worldwide accessions of rice germplasm. We identified 5 cultivars with the LTR-retrotransposon insertion out of 68 rice accessions. The sequence and expression pattern of Pit in the five cultivars were the same as those in K59 and all showed Pit-mediated blast resistance. The results suggest that the functional Pit identified using the markers was derived from a common progenitor. Additionally, comparison of the Pit coding sequences between K59 and susceptible cultivars revealed that one nucleotide polymorphism, which caused an amino acid substitution, offered another target for a FM. These results indicate that our DNA markers should enhance prediction of Pit function and be applicable to a range of rice varieties/landraces cultivated in various regions worldwide and belonging to the temperate japonica, tropical japonica, and indica groups.

We report experimental results from a heavy ion CT system based on the measurement of residual range distribution using an X-ray intensifying screen and a charged coupled device (CCD) camera system. This technique was first investigated by Zygmanski (2000) for proton beams, and they reported that the spatial resolution was significantly degraded by multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) effects in the irradiated medium. Experiments were done on the spatial resolution phantom by using helium and carbon beams accelerated up to 120 MeV/u and 230 MeV/u by the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC), installed in the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Japan, using a high performance intensified CCD (ICCD) camera. We show that the MCS blurring effect can be significantly reduced in the reconstructed image by using a carbon beam with this technique. Our results suggest that heavier particles such as carbon would be more useful if this technique is envisioned as a clinical tool to obtain data that would aid proton and/or heavy ion treatment planning.

An emulsion-counter hybrid experiment (KEK E176) was carried out to search for double strangeness systems such as double- Λ hypernuclei and H -dibaryons. More than 10% of Ξ − hyperons produced in the (K − , K + ) reaction were brought to rest in the nuclear emulsion. We have obtained 98 candidate events of nuclear capture at rest of Ξ − hyperons which are described in this report. Among those, four events were identified as sequential weak decay of double- Λ hypernuclei. The binding energies of Ξ − -( 12 C, 14 N and 16 O) states have been estimated for two events which emit twin single- Λ hypernuclei back to back from the capture point. The Σ − p decay vertex of an H -dibaryon was searched for near the capture point and no evidence was observed. Upper limits for the branching ratio of H emission are 5–10% for a lifetime less than 0.1 ns at the 90% confidence level. The trapping probabilities of single and double strangeness to a nuclear fragment following Ξ − capture at rest have been studied.

An event emitting a Σ- -hyperon from a Ξ- -hyperon nuclear capture at rest has been observed in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. The event has been analyzed as the first observation of the weak decay of the S = - 2 system.

Purpose: To determine the maximum tolerated dose, recommended dose and dose-limiting toxicities of irinotecan plus S-1 in advanced colorectal cancer. Patients and Methods: S-1 was administered orally at 80 mg/m2/day for 21 consecutive days followed by a 2-week rest. CPT-11 was given intravenously on days 1 and 15 of each course, at an initial dose of 60 mg/m2/day, stepping up to 80, 100, 120 or 140 mg/m2/day. Courses were repeated every 5 weeks, unless disease progression or severe toxicities were observed. Results: A total of 20 patients were entered in this study. The maximum tolerated dose of CPT-11 was considered to be 100 mg/m2, because 2 of 3 patients developed dose-limiting toxicities, such as anorexia, fatigue and diarrhea. Therefore, the recommended dose of CPT-11 was set at 80 mg/m2. Tumor responses were seen in 8 of 14 patients with measurable lesions. Conclusion: A combination of S-1 with CPT-11 is safe and can be recommended for further phase II studies in patients with advanced colorectal cancer.

A selectable marker gene conferring resistance to bialaphos (BI) was introduced into rice blast isolate Y90-71BI and another conferring resistance to blasticidin S (BS) into isolate 3514-R-2BS of Magnaporthe oryzae to demonstrate exchange of DNA. Colonies obtained from co-cultures of these two isolates were resistant to both BI and BS and had both resistance genes as shown by Southern blot analysis of their genomic DNA. Conidia from these BI-BS-resistant isolates had only one nucleus per cell after staining with 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI). Using flow cytometry, however, these BI-BS-resistant isolates were found to be haploid. Segregation of BI-BS-resistant isolates for pathogenicity (avirulence to virulence) on rice line K59-1 was consistent with a 1:1 ratio, as was segregation for mating type. These BI-BS-resistant isolates were thus apparently derived from parasexual exchange of DNA and the segregation of pathogenicity and of mating type of the parasexual recombinants might correspond to that of the progeny of the offspring of the sexual cross.

The six-dimensional (6D) low density elimination method (LDEM) has been applied to solve the p-type icosahedral Zn75Mg16Ho9 quasicrystal. The reconstructed electron density distribution by the LDEM exhibits three large occupation domains (ODs) centred at (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), ( , , , , , ), and ( , 0, 0, 0, 0, 0) in the 6D primitive unit cell, and the OD at ( , , , , , ) contains Ho atoms, which mainly distribute around the threefold directions. A geometrical analysis confirms that a rhombic triacontahedron cluster which includes a Bergman-type cluster is a basic building unit of the structure.
