Fuel Technology ,Energy Engineering and Power Technology - Abstract
Graphene is a promising candidate for CO2 capture and storage. Doping graphene with other elements is an effective way to modify its CO2 storage ability. The literature has shown that the N and B doping could change the adsorption strength of CO2 on the graphene substrate. However, there is no research available to elucidate the adsorption sites and the physical properties underlying the interaction of CO2 with the N and B doped systems. Therefore, this paper is devoted to clarifying the current topic using the self-consistent van der Waals density functional theory calculations. The results showed that the N and B doping increases and decreases the adsorption energy of CO2, respectively. The reason is that there are more peaks of the electronic density of states of CO2 participating in the interaction with the N p orbital than with the B p orbital.

Adsorption isotherms are reported for pure water vapor on zeolite 13X (also called zeolite NaX) pellets. Data were obtained using a gravimetric method over a temperature range of 25 to 100 °C and a pressure range of 0.006 to 25 kPa. These pure-component equilibria are fit with the Sips, Toth, and multisite Langmuir models, all modified with the Aranovich–Donohue (A–D) model. The A–D Sips isotherm is recommended for modeling water adsorption on zeolite 13X because it provides the best agreement with the measured isotherm data.

BackgroundThe efficacy and safety of febuxostat in patients with stage 4-5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) are still unclear, even though it’s commonly used in clinical practice [1]. However, clinical trials are lacking to determine them due to ethical problems about enrollment of advanced CKD patients.ObjectivesWe aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of febuxostat in patients with stage 4-5 CKD not yet on dialysis through a meta-analysis of observational studies.MethodsWe performed a systematic search in PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to find articles reporting on advanced CKD patients from observational cohorts who start or take febuxostat at baseline in September 2021. Articles had to describe change from baseline in serum urate levels and renal function as assessed by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The articles were screened by two independent reviewers (YP, HJ). Meta-analysis using a random-effects model was performed. R software was used for statistical analyses.ResultsAmong 148 retrieved studies, 5 relevant observational studies were included in the meta-analysis. The febuxostat dose was administered at 10-120 mg per day, and the treatment period was 3 to 12 months. Five studies were included with a total of 327 patients to analyze urate-lowering efficacy. The urate-lowering effect after use of febuxostat medication showed statistical significance (weighted mean difference, -1.85; 95% CI, -2.04 to -1.67; I2; 0%, Figure 1A). Three studies with 145 patients were available for assessment of eGFR. Renal function as assessed by eGFR did not decrease even after use of febuxostat (weighted mean difference, 0.11; 95% CI, -0.25 to 0.47; I2; 45%, Figure 1B).Figure 1.Meta-analyses of serum urate levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate at baseline and follow-up.ConclusionOur meta-analysis showed that febuxostat had good urate-lowering efficacy and renal safety in hyperuricemia patients with stage 4-5 CKD, who are not yet on dialysis. More studies with larger sample sizes and higher quality are required to clarify the efficacy and safety of febuxostat in advanced CKD.References[1]Kim SH, Lee SY, Kim JM, Son CN. The objective of this study was to correlate movement assessed by a pyroelectric infrared sensor system in preweaning dairy calves with lying and standing time assessed by a 3D accelerometer considering the temperature-humidity index (THI). A total of 35 dairy calves (1–7 d of age) were enrolled in the study and 20 calves were included in the final analyses. The lying and standing time of the calves was monitored with a 3D accelerometer (Hobo Pendant G Data Logger, Onset Computer Corporation, USA), which was used as the gold standard reference. The infrared sensor monitoring system (IMS; Calf Monitoring System, Futuro Farming GmbH, Germany) was fixed to the fence of the calf hutch within the calf's reach. Temperature-humidity was monitored with 2 validated THI sensors inside and on outside of each calf hutch. Additionally, one THI sensor was located near the calf hutches. The observation period lasted 14 consecutive days. The average standing time assessed by the 3D accelerometer was 13.4 ± 12.7 (mean ± standard deviation) min/h and the average lying time was 46.6 (±12.7) min/h. The median (25th percentile; 75th percentile) number of movements measured by the IMS was 360 (60; 919) movements per hour. Number of movements per hour measured by the IMS was compared with data obtained with a validated 3D accelerometer. The Pearson correlation coefficient between both standing and lying time and the number of movements was r = 0.85 and r = −0.85, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficients were only slightly influenced by THI (low THI [72]: r = 0.81). Our data show that the number of movements of dairy calves measured by IMS were highly correlated with the chosen gold standard reference method. High THI slightly affects the measurement accuracy of IMS.

Fixed-bed adsorption is widely used in industrial gas separation and is the primary method for atmosphere revitalization in space. This paper analyzes the uncertainty of a one-dimensional, fixed-bed adsorption model due to uncertainty in several model inputs, namely, the linear-driving-force (LDF) mass transfer coefficient, axial dispersion, heat transfer coefficients, and adsorbent properties. The input parameter uncertainties are determined from a comprehensive survey of experimental data in the literature. The model is first calibrated against experimental data from intra-bed centerline concentration measurements to find the LDF coefficient. We then use this LDF coefficient to extract axial dispersion coefficients from mixed, downstream concentration measurements for both a small-diameter bed (dominated by wall-channeling) and a large-diameter bed (dominated by pellet-driven dispersion). The predicted effluent concentration and temperature profiles are most strongly affected by uncertainty in LDF coefficient, adsorbent density, and void fraction. The uncertainty analysis further reveals that ignoring the effect of wall-channeling on apparent axial dispersion can cause significant error in the predicted breakthrough times of small-diameter beds.

Adsorption isotherms are reported for pure carbon dioxide on zeolite 13X (also called zeolite NaX) pellets over a temperature range of 0 to 200 °C and a pressure range of 0.001 to 100 kPa. These pure-component equilibria are fit with Langmuir, Toth, two-site Langmuir, and three-site Langmuir models, both with and without temperature dependence being included in the saturation capacity. The agreement between fitted and measured isotherms is shown to increase with increasing number of available fitting parameters in the model, with the constant-saturation, two-site Langmuir isotherm providing the best balance between agreement with the measurements and model complexity. The isosteric heats of adsorption are measured across a temperature range from 10 to 200 °C using differential scanning calorimetry. The measured heats of adsorption decrease with increasing CO2 loading but show little variation with temperature. The measurements are shown to agree with predicted heats of adsorption derived from the fitted L...

Purpose It is accepted that a donor's predicted total lung capacity (pTLC) can be 75-125% of the recipient's pTLC in lung transplantation; however, ‘optimal graft size’ is not clearly defined, especially in restricted lung disease (RD) patients. These disagreements exist as it is difficult to accurately measure lung size before and after transplantation and it is also difficult to predict and evaluate the extent of re-expansion of the restricted thoracic cavity after transplantation. This study examined changes in lung volume after lung transplantation using a 3D lung volume measurement from CT scans before and after surgery under the assumption that the patient's thoracic cavity would return to the size of the patient without underlying lung disease after surgery. Methods A total of 113 patients, who underwent lung transplantation between September 2012 and April 2019 in our institute, and met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. This included 88 patients who were diagnosed with RD and 25 patients who were diagnosed with non-RD. Patients were further divided into oversized and undersized groups according to the donor and recipient pTLC ratio, and a total of 4 groups were studied. Preoperative and postoperative lung volume on CT scans were measured using the synapse 3D program (Fuji film, Japan). Results RD patients showed a significant increase in total lung volume (TLV) after surgery, while non-RD patients showed a decrease in TLV. These changes showed the greatest increase in the RD group within 1 year and continuously increased up to 5 years. In the non-RD group, TLV decreased within 3 months of surgery. These changes were not related to graft size. Conclusion In lung transplant patients, the thoracic cavity re-expanded in RD patients and reduced in the non-RD patients, returning to healthy values without lung disease status in terms of TLV.

Abstract Particle physics today faces the challenge of explaining the mystery of dark matter, the origin of matter over anti-matter in the Universe, the origin of the neutrino masses, the apparent fine-tuning of the electro-weak scale, and many other aspects of fundamental physics. Perhaps the most striking frontier to emerge in the search for answers involves new physics at mass scales comparable to familiar matter, below the GeV-scale, or even radically below, down to sub-eV scales, and with very feeble interaction strength. New theoretical ideas to address dark matter and other fundamental questions predict such feebly interacting particles (FIPs) at these scales, and indeed, existing data provide numerous hints for such possibility. A vibrant experimental program to discover such physics is under way, guided by a systematic theoretical approach firmly grounded on the underlying principles of the Standard Model. This document represents the report of the FIPs 2022 workshop, held at CERN between the 17 and 21 October 2022 and aims to give an overview of these efforts, their motivations, and the decadal goals that animate the community involved in the search for FIPs.

Structured porous materials show great potential as extended surfaces in heat-exchange applications that also require design for load-bearing capability. In particular, lattice-frame materials (LFM) are known for their superior strength-to-weight ratio; this work presents a comprehensive experimental and numerical study of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous LFMs. Flow through a periodic unit cell of the material is simulated to characterize the forced-convection performance under hydraulically and thermally fully developed conditions. The performance of LFMs with a tetrahedral ligament configuration is characterized as a function of Reynolds number in the laminar regime (150 Re

The objective of the study was to compare 4 different methods of serum collection to assess failed transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) in dairy calves. We hypothesized that centrifuged serum, filtered serum and clotted serum at room temperature, and clotted serum at refrigerator temperature measured with Brix refractometry would highly correlate with IgG concentration assessed by radial immunodiffusion (RID; gold standard) in centrifuged serum. Blood samples were collected from 321 newborn dairy calves. In centrifuged serum (r = 0.88), serum clotted at room temperature (20.2°C ± 6.47; r = 0.86), serum clotted at refrigerator temperature (7.6°C ± 0.91; r = 0.87), and filtered serum (r = 0.70), total solids (TS) in % Brix, and IgG concentrations measured with RID were highly correlated. Regarding the refractometry results among the different serum types, the TS results of serum clotted at room temperature, clotted at refrigerator temperature, and filtered serum showed high correlation coefficients compared with the TS results of centrifuged serum (r = 0.99, r = 0.98, and r = 0.89), respectively. The test characteristics of clotted serum were as accurate as centrifuged serum and generate comparable results. Filtered serum was slightly less accurate. All serum types are valid methods to detect an FTPI in dairy calves, if the specific Brix thresholds for each serum type are considered. Nevertheless, serum clotted at refrigerator temperature should not be the preferred method to avoid the risk of hemolysis.

Voice recognition is one of the various applications of Digital Signal Processing and has many important real-world impacts. The topic has been investigated for quite a long time and is usually divided into two major divisions which are speaker recognition and speech recognition. Speaker recognition identifies the person who is speaking based on characteristics of the vocal utterance. On the other hand, speech recognition focuses on determining the content of the spoken message. In this project, we designed and implemented a speaker recognition system that identifies different users based on their previously stored voice samples. The samples were gathered and its features were extracted using the Mel-frequency Cepstrum Coefficient feature extraction method. These coefficients, which characterize its corresponding voice, would be stored in a database for the purpose of later comparison with future audio inputs to identify an unknown speaker. The module is currently designed to be used as a standalone device. In the future, the module is equipped with the Internet of Things (IoT) for various security systems based on human biometrics.

Abstract A 510 day long-term measurement of a 45.3 g platinum foil acting as the sample and high voltage contact in an ultra-low-background high purity germanium detector was performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). The data was used for a detailed study of double beta decay modes in natural platinum isotopes. Limits are set in the range $${\mathcal {O}}(10^{14}{-} 10^{19})$$ O ( 10 14 - 10 19 ) years (90% C.L.) for several double beta decay transitions to excited states confirming, and partially extending existing limits. The highest sensitivity of the measurement, greater than $$10^{19}$$ 10 19 years, was achieved for the two neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decay modes of the isotope $$^{198}$$ 198 Pt. Additionally, novel limits for inelastic dark matter scattering on $$^{195}$$ 195 Pt are placed up to mass splittings of approximately 500 keV. We analyze several techniques to extend the sensitivity and propose a few approaches for future medium-scale experiments with platinum-group elements.

Background CT-P13 is approved as a biosimilar of innovator infliximab for marketing in 79 countries around the world. After approval, observational study has been conducted in Republic of Korea in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) and Plaque Psoriasis (PS). Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CT-P13 under routine care in Republic of Korea. Methods This observational study included both biologic naive patients (Naive group) and patients who switched from other anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)s to CT-P13 (Switch group). Effectiveness were evaluated based on remission (DAS28≤2.6 in RA, BASDAI Results Total 940 patients (400 with RA, 531 with AS, 3 with PsA and 6 with PS) were registered and 338 (36.0%) patients (108 with RA, 228 with AS, 2 with PS) who switched to CT-P13 were included. The proportion of patients achieving remission was similar between Naive and Switch groups in both RA and AS during post-baseline visits (Table 1). In RA, the proportion of patients achieving each disease activity category by DAS28 was similar between Naive and Switch groups (Figure 1). The proportion of patients who achieved BASDAI 20/50/70 response gradually increased from week 6 to week 24 or 30 in Naive group with AS (Figure 1). Fifty percent of naive patients with PsA achieved clinical remission. The proportions of both PASI 50 and 75 responses were 50% at Week 22 in Naive group and were 100% and 50% in Switch group, respectively during post-baseline visits in PS patients. Throughout this study, treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAE) and treatment-emergent serious adverse events (TESAE) were reported as Table 2. Only 11% of patients experienced infection. Conclusions CT-P13 is efficacious and well-tolerated in RA/AS/PsA/PS patients. Efficacy and safety results in patients treated with CT-P13 were clinically consistent to historical data [1,2,3]. Especially, Switch group results showed that CT-P13 provides a useful alternative to other anti-TNFs. References Kobayashi et al (2016). Hetland et al (2005). Hetland et al (2010). Aim Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome resulting from a microbial infection. Transforming growth factor β-induced protein (TGFBIp) is an extracellular matrix protein expressed by human endothelial cells and platelets that induces sepsis through interaction with integrin αvβ5. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of TGFBIp in vascular permeability and the underlying mechanisms using TGFBIp-neutralizing antibody. Methods Mice were subjected to caecal ligation and puncture (CLP) with or without neutralizing anti-TGFBIp antibody (300 μg kg−1, intravenously). Wild-type or integrin β5-null mice received TGFBIp (0.1 mg kg−1, intravenously) or were subjected to CLP. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were exposed to lipopolysaccharide (100 ng mL−1) with or without neutralizing anti-TGFBIp antibody (50 μg mL−1). Results Administration of neutralizing anti-TGFBIp antibody in mice attenuated CLP-induced secretion of TGFBIp, leucocyte migration and vascular permeability and reduced septic mortality. Injected TGFBIp did not enhance vascular barrier permeability or leucocyte migration in β5-null mice. Finally, neutralizing anti-TGFBIp antibody inhibited the specific interactions between TGFBIp and its receptor, integrin αvβ5. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that treatment with a TGFBIp-neutralizing antibody can ameliorate the deleterious effects of sepsis.

An auto-pneumatic transfer system has been installed at the Dalat research reactor for rapid instrument neutron activation analysis based on very short-lived nuclides. This system can be used to perform short irradiations in seconds either in the vertical channel 13-2 or in the horizontal thermal column of the reactor. The transferring time of sample from irradiation to measurement position is approximately 3.2 seconds. A loss-free counting system using HPGE detector has been also setup in compacting with the pneumatic transfer system for measurement of sample’s activity, automatically starting for data acquisition at irradiated sample’s arrival. This new facility was tested and shown to have high potential for the determination of short-lived nuclides with half-lives from 10 ¸ 100 seconds. This work presents the results of timing parameter measurements, characterization of irradiation facilities, and application of this system to determining Selenium concentration in several biological reference materials.

CO2EOR has much advantage not only in enhancing oil recovery but also in CO2 storage. It is, however, necessary to confirm or estimate the technical, operational and economic uncertainties by pilot test for applying CO2EOR to actual oil fields. This paper describes the methods and the procedures to design an inter-well CO2EOR pilot test.As a result of subsurface study, the number of pilot wells is determined to be 1 injection well and 2 production wells in order to estimate CO2 areal sweep efficiency in the minimum cost. To confirm the effect of CO2EOR, well interval, cumulative CO2 injection volume and duration were determined to be 300 m, 2,000 tonnes and 2 weeks, respectively. The oil production rate begins to increase 1 month after the beginning of the pilot test, and the gas production rate and the vapor phase CO2 mole fraction also begins to increase at the same time. Then, the oil production rate reaches the peak after 1.5 months from the beginning, and the effect of CO2EOR is confirmed clearly. If oil saturation is high in the target reservoir, it will be difficult for confirming the oil bank clearly. In such case, pre-water injection before CO2 injection is found to be an effective countermeasure. As a result of surface study, a CO2 procurement method and a new platform were designed through the process optimization study. Manufactured CO2 was selected as CO2 source for the pilot test. The packed manufactured CO2 into tank containers are transported to the injection site by trucks and supply vessels. Moreover, CO2 impact study was conducted, and it is found that we can manage the potential risks related to corrosion and scale formation by using suitable countermeasure such as CRA's and inhibitors. Finally, based on the result of corrosion and scale formation studies, the operation guidelines were prepared. When the CO2EOR pilot test will be planned in any oil field, it will be possible to make the test design with the similar procedure to this study.

We report the synthesis and optimization of metal (Mn, Fe and Al) doped NASICON type Li3V2(PO4)3 by solid-state reaction method. Among the metal doping, 0.02 mol concentration of Al is found better performing electrode while approaching the removal of three moles of lithium between 3-4.8 V vs. Li. Adipic acid with various concentrations is used to generate in-situ carbon layer over the 0.02 mol Al doped Li3V2(PO4)3 particulates (Li3V1.98Al0.02(PO4)3). Presence of carbon on the surface of particulates is confirmed by TEM and Raman analysis. Half-cell Li/C-Li3V1.98Al0.02(PO4)3 (0.15 mol of adipic acid) exhibited the highest reversible capacity of ∼182 mAh g−1 (2.77 moles of lithium) at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2 compared to rest of the adipic acid concentrations. Further, the cell retained 83% of capacity after 50 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at ambient conditions. Li-insertion/extraction mechanism and improvement in electronic conductivity profiles are validated through cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. © 2012 The Electrochemical Society. Intersphincteric resection (ISR) for low rectal cancer has been described as the ultimate sphincter-saving procedure. Laparoscopic ISR has been proved safe with early postoperative benefits. Recently, some colorectal surgeons have begun to perform robot-assisted ISR to harness the advantages of the da Vinci robotic system. The authors present their short-term results for a robotic technique of ISR.Data from 29 consecutive patients at a single institution with very low rectal cancer (4 cm) from the anal verge who underwent robot-assisted ISR were prospectively collected between December 2007 and March 2010.The study enrolled 23 men and 6 women with a median age of 61.5 years (range, 36-82 years). Their median body mass index (BMI) was 23.3 kg/m(2) (range, 17.9-32.5 kg/m(2)). The median distance of the tumor from the anal verge was 3 cm (range, 1-4 cm). The median operative time was 325 min (range, 235-435 min), with a console time of 130 min (range, 110-210 min). There were no conversions to open surgery. A protecting ileostomy was performed for all the patients. The median blood loss was less than 50 ml (range, 50-1,000 ml). The median size of the tumor was 3 cm (range, 0-6.9 cm), and the median number of lymph nodes harvested was 16 (range, 1-44). The median distal margin was 0.8 cm (range, 0-4 cm), and one margin was positive. The circumferential margin was negative (2 mm) for 27 patients. Therefore, complete resection (R0) was achieved for 26 (90%) of the 29 patients. The median hospital stay was 9 days (range, 5-15 days). Nine patients experienced complications, including three anastomotic leaks (10%). All the leaks were managed conservatively. No surgical mortalities occurred.Robot-assisted intersphincteric resection for very low rectal cancer is feasible, and its short-term outcome is acceptable.

There are about 15 species of Gracilaria reported in Vietnam. Of these, Gracilaria asiatica Zhang et Xia is being cultivated on a large scale in Northern Vietnam, which has a subtropical climate. During the rainy season, from May to October, the growth of G. asiatica is drastically reduced or even ceases due to very low salinity and high temperature. Therefore, it is important to improve the tolerance of G. asiatica to a wide range of salinity and temperatures. This paper presents the results of research on strain improvement of G. asiatica using irradiation and selection media. Three irradiation doses of 20, 60, and 100 krad were tested against the control (with no irradiation). Afterward, the seaweed biomass was cultivated on a selected medium, ESS-1, containing NaCl in concentrations of 23‰ (C1) and 0‰ (C2). The results showed that a higher survival rate of G. asiatica was observed with the 20- and 60-krad doses. The protein content and composition of selected seaweeds were analyzed and compared with the control. SDS-PAGE showed no remarkable difference in the protein composition between the control and irradiated samples. However, the 67-kDa protein band of seaweed treated with 20 and 60 krad, then grown on ESS-1 medium with 23% NaCl, had a higher density than other samples. This protein was reported to play an important role in G. asiatica, by enhancing its tolerance to variable salinity and temperature. Although the organic and inorganic content of all samples remained almost the same, the content and quality of agar extracted from irradiated seaweeds were higher than those of the controls. Due to the high amount of 3.6 anhydro-α-L-galactose combined with low amounts of sulfate found in irradiated seaweeds, the freezing and melting points of extracted agar were lower. Eventually, this resulted in higher condensation and better quality of agar, such as in its gel-forming ability. The quality of fluid agar extracted from selected seaweeds improved as shown in the remarkable decrease in Ca2+, Mg2+, and total Fe ion content, thus lowering its melting point compared with the control.

Several Vietnamese seaweed species have economic importance as food for humans, as industrial materials, as ingredients in traditional medicine, and as biofertilizers. The nutritional values of nine representative Vietnamese seaweed species were analyzed. In this report, all of the species studied are rich in proteins, lipids (especially polyunsaturated fatty acids), vitamins, pigments, and macro- and micro-elements. The effect of the physiological activities of the green alga, Ulva reticulata, on hepatic fatty acid metabolism were examined in mice. The results indicate that Vietnamese seaweeds are abundant and have high quality materials for industrial and agricultural purposes.

The molybdenum (Mo) non-point source pollution in the mining area has an irreversible impact on the surrounding water and soil ecosystems. Herein, three integrated vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs) were constructed to assess the effects of combination substrates and plant on the removal of Mo(VI). Results showed that CW1 with combination substrates and cattail exhibited a favorable removal performance for Mo(VI) at 80.90%. Moreover, most Mo(VI) retained in the CWs was retained in the substrate (58.13–88.04%), and the largest fraction of Mo(VI) retained was the water-soluble fraction on the surface of the combination substrates. Mo(VI) removal was also influenced by the microbial community composition in substrate, especially their co-occurrence networks. The species that showed significant positive correlation with Mo(VI) removal were Planctomycetes, Latescibacteria, Armatimonadetes, and Gemmatimonadetes. Moreover, CWs added plants showed that more co-occurrences interaction between taxa occurs, which means that the wetlands efficiently select recruitment of potential microbial consortia and change the co-occurrences to remove pollution in the substrate. These results could be useful in providing an ecology-based solution for the treatment of Mo(VI) in wastewater, especially in adjusting the microbial communities for Mo(VI) removal at the genetic level. HIGHLIGHTS Complex substrates coupled cattail enhanced Mo(VI) removal in constructed wetlands.; Adsorption was the main Mo(VI) removal mechanism by DWTRs and MCPP.; Mo(VI) removal was also influenced by microbial community composition.; Cattails changed the co-occurrences of microbes to remove pollution in substrates.;

Data on fragment mass yields in spontaneous and thermal neutron induced fission of wide range of nuclides from light actinides through heavy actinides were analyzed and completely described as mass distribution parameters, based on the concept of multimodal fission. The evidence that supports the existence of multi-components in the mass distribution of fission fragments, bimodal asymmetric mode in light actinide fission, bimodal symmetric mode in heavy actinide fission, and the existence of the boundaries of fission asymmetry has been obtained.

Water treatment using pulsed streamer discharge in water has been studied currently. We have attempted to develop high efficiency water treatment system for a practical application. The system is composed of a reactor module and a pulsed power generator. Initially, an investigation of the pulsed power generator is described. An inductive energy storage circuit and a capacitive energy storage circuit, with semiconductor switches and magnetic switches were compared. The IES circuit could output higher voltage than that of the CES circuit, but the energy efficiency was lower than that of the CES circuit. However, the IES circuit realized the higher voltage output and the high energy transfer efficiency by the adjustment of the load impedance. Then, an investigation of structure of the reactor module is described. Three water treatment methods, i.e., discharge on water surface, discharge in bubbles in water, and water droplets spray into discharge space in gas, were compared. For the water droplets spray type, the energy efficiency for the decomposition of acetic acid was not the highest although that for dye is the highest. To increase the energy efficiency for the acetic acid, the discharge energy density should be low and a kind of gas in which the discharge is generated should be investigated.

Precise information on the decay heat from fission products following times after a fission reaction is necessary for safety designs and operations of nuclear-power reactors, fuel storage, transport flasks, and for spent fuel management and processing. In this study, the timing distributions of fission products' concentrations and their integrated decay heat as function of time following a fast neutron fission reaction of 232Th were exactly calculated by the numerical method with using the DHP code.

The thermal neutron radiative capture cross section for 186W(n, γ)187W reaction was measured by the activation method using the filtered neutron beam at the Dalat research reactor. An optimal composition of Si and Bi, in single crystal form, has been used as neutron filters to create the high-purity filtered neutron beam with Cadmium ratio of Rcd = 420 and peak energy En = 0.025 eV. The induced activities in the irradiated samples were measured by a high resolution HPGe digital gamma-ray spectrometer. The present result of cross section has been determined relatively to the reference value of the standard reaction 197Au(n, γ)198Au. The necessary correction factors for gamma-ray true coincidence summing, and thermal neutron self-shielding effects were taken into account in this experiment by Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract Sub-Saharan Africa is registering one of the highest urban population growth across the world. It is estimated that over 75% of the population in this region will be living in urban settings by 2050. However, it is not known how this rapid urbanization will affect vector populations and disease transmission. The present study summarizes findings from studies conducted in urban settings between the 1970s and 2020 to assess the effects of urbanization on the entomological inoculation rate pattern and anopheline species distribution. Different online databases such as PubMed, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, Google were screened. A total of 90 publications were selected out of 1527. Besides, over 200 additional publications were consulted to collate information on anopheline breeding habitats and species distribution in urban settings. The study confirms high malaria transmission in rural compared to urban settings. The study also suggests that there had been an increase in malaria transmission in most cities after 2003, which could also be associated with an increase in sampling, resources and reporting. Species of the Anopheles gambiae complex were the predominant vectors in most urban settings. Anopheline larvae were reported to have adapted to different aquatic habitats. The study provides updated information on the distribution of the vector population and the dynamic of malaria transmission in urban settings. The study also highlights the need for implementing integrated control strategies in urban settings.

Abstract The rapid expansion of insecticide resistance and outdoor malaria transmission are affecting the efficacy of current malaria control measures. In urban settings, where malaria transmission is focal and breeding habitats are few, fixed and findable, the addition of anti-larval control measures could be efficient for malaria vector control. But field evidences for this approach remains scarce. Here we provide findings of a randomized-control larviciding trial conducted in the city of Yaoundé that support the efficacy of this approach. A two arms random control trial design including 26 clusters of 2 to 4 km2 each (13 clusters in the intervention area and 13 in the non-intervention area) was used to assess larviciding efficacy. The microbial larvicide VectoMax combining Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (Bti) and Bacillus sphaericus in a single granule was applied every 2 weeks in all standing water collection points. The anopheline density collected using CDC light traps was used as the primary outcome, secondary outcomes included the entomological inoculation rate, breeding habitats with anopheline larvae, and larval density. Baseline entomological data collection was conducted for 17 months from March 2017 to July 2018 and the intervention lasted 26 months from September 2018 to November 2020. The intervention was associated with a reduction of 68% of adult anopheline biting density and of 79% of the entomological inoculation rate (OR 0.21; 95% CI 0.14–0.30, P

- Abstract
Carbamylation is a post-translational modification, the pathophysiological consequences of which remain poorly understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding small ribonucleic acids that have emerged as one of the central players in gene expression regulation. This study was designed to determine the effect of carbamylated albumin (cAlb) on the expression of miRNAs. Albumin was carbamylated, and the extent of carbamylation was monitored using trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid. Albumin or cAlb were added to rat mesangial cells (RMCs), and RNA was extracted. miRNA microarray analysis was performed. The expression of microRNA-146a (miR-146a) and microRNA-146b (miR-146b) was analyzed by real-time RT-PCR. Of 365 miRNAs analyzed, the expression of miR-146a/b was found to be markedly induced by cAlb (miR-146a, 12.75-fold increase; miR-146b, 5.88-fold increase). Real-time RT-PCR analysis confirmed the increased levels of miR-146a/b by cAlb (p0.05). It was also found that expression levels of miR-146a/b were increased in renal cell carcinoma tumor tissues compared to corresponding non-tumor tissues (p0.05). Our data suggest that cAlb stimulates miR-146a/b in RMCs, the levels of which are increased in renal cell carcinoma. Further studies on the function of cAlb may provide new insights into the pathophysiology of renal cell carcinoma.
