1. Next generation lunar laser retroreflectors for fundamental physics and lunar science

Abstract: Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) data represent a powerful tool to understand the dynamics of the Earth-Moon system and the deep lunar interior. Over the past five decades, the ground station technology has significantly improved, whereas the lunar laser retroreflector arrays (LRAs) on the lunar surface did not. Current instrumental LLR error budget is dominated by the spread of the returning laser pulse due to the large size of the arrays. Next-generation single solid lunar Cube Corner Retroreflectors (CCRs) of large optical diameter (whose LLR performance is unaffected by that time spread) aim to fully exploit the current laser ranging station capabilities to attain LLR accuracy below current centimeter value down to the desired millimeter level and much higher data collection rates. Such improvements will have a significant impact, enabling more refined ephemerides, improved tests of General Relativity (GR) and of other theories of relativistic gravity in the Sun-Earth-Moon system and improved knowledge of the properties of the lunar interior.

2. Observational Constraint on the Radius and Oblateness of the Lunar Core‐Mantle Boundary

Abstract: Lunar laser ranging (LLR) data and Apollo seismic data analyses, revealed independent evidence for the presence of a fluid lunar core. However, the size of the lunar fluid core remained uncertain by _55 km (encompassing two contrasting 2011 Apollo seismic data analyses). Here we show that a new description of the lunar interior's dynamical model provides a determination of the radius and geometry of the lunar core-mantle boundary (CMB) from the LLR observations. We compare the present day lunar core oblateness obtained from LLR analysis with the expected hydrostatic model values, over a range of previously expected CMB radii. The findings suggest a core oblateness (f(c) = (2.2 ± 0.6) x 10(exp 14)) that satisfies the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium over a tight range of lunar CMB radii (R(CMB) = 381 ± 12 km). Our estimates of a presently-relaxed lunar CMB translates to a core mass fraction in the range of 1.59 - 1.77% with a present-day Free Core Nutation (FCN) within (367±100) years.

Abstract: Phoebe is the only major satellite of Saturn with a retrograde orbit. The Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) took a lot of Phoebe images between 2004 and 2017, but only a selection of them has been reduced. In this paper, we reduced the remaining ISS images of Phoebe. In the reduction, the Gaia EDR3 catalogue was used to provide the reference stars' positions, and the modified moment was used to measure the centre of image stars and Phoebe. Finally, a total of 834 ISS images of Phoebe have been reduced successfully. Compared with the JPL ephemeris SAT375, Phoebe's positions are consistent. The average residuals in the right ascension and declination are 0.08" and $-0.05$", and the standard deviations of the residuals are about 0.2". In terms of residuals in linear units, the means in the right ascension and declination are about 5 km and $-2$ km, respectively; The standard deviations are about 11 km. Cybele asteroids constitute an appealing reservoir of primitive material genetically linked to the outer Solar System, and the physical properties (size and shape) of the largest members can be readily accessed by large (8m class) telescopes. Aims. We took advantage of the bright apparition of the most iconic member of the Cybele population, (65) Cybele, in July and August 2021 to acquire high-angular-resolution images and optical light curves of the asteroid with which we aim to analyse its shape and bulk properties. Methods. Eight series of images were acquired with VLT/SPHERE+ZIMPOL, seven of which were combined with optical light curves to reconstruct the shape of the asteroid using the ADAM, MPCD, and SAGE algorithms. The origin of the shape was investigated by means of N-body simulations. Results. Cybele has a volume-equivalent diameter of 263±3 km and a bulk density of 1.55 ± 0.19 g cm−3. Notably, its shape and rotation state are closely compatible with those of a Maclaurin equilibrium figure. The lack of a collisional family associated with Cybele and the higher bulk density of that body with respect to other large P-type asteroids suggest that it never experienced any large disruptive impact followed by rapid re-accumulation. This would imply that its present-day shape represents the original one. However, numerical integration of the long-term dynamical evolution of a hypothetical family of Cybele shows that it is dispersed by gravitational perturbations and chaotic diffusion over gigayears of evolution. Conclusions. The very close match between Cybele and an equilibrium figure opens up the possibility that D ≥ 260 km (M ≥ 1.5 × 1019 kg) small bodies from the outer Solar System all formed at equilibrium. However, we cannot currently rule out an old impact as the origin of the equilibrium shape of Cybele. 6. Characterising the interior of five inner Saturnian moons using Cassini ISS data

Abstract: Context. The Cassini-Huygens space mission provided a huge amount of data for the Saturnian system. While the mission ended in September 2017, there is still much information to be retrieved from the data. Aims. Here, from their orbital motion, we infer the interior of the five inner Saturnian moons, Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, Janus, and Epimetheus. Our results benefit from a recent study of the shape of these moons, which provides a much better estimation of their 3D shape and volume. Methods. Using Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) astrometric data, we again reduced the Cassini ISS images with an improved shape modelling. We then integrated the orbital motion of the inner Saturnian moons and solved for a large set of physical parameters for this system, including the masses and physical libration amplitudes of the moons. Results. We obtain a density value (in g cm−3 with a 1σ error bar based on the digital terrain models and spherical harmonics available today) of 0.3935 ± 0.0033, 0.4873 ± 0.0026, 0.5045 ± 0.0017, 0.6233 ± 0.0015, and 0.6413 ± 0.0002 for Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, Epimetheus, and Janus, respectively. We were able to determine the physical libration amplitudes of Prometheus, Pandora, Epimetheus, and Janus to be 0.98 ± 0.08, −5.2 ± 0.7, −6.0 ± 0.6, and −0.39 ± 0.16 (degrees and 1σ error bar), respectively. Our solutions for Epimetheus and Janus are in full agreement with a former estimation performed directly from the measurement of the rotation of these two moons. Conclusions. We confirm the large porosity of these five moons and their increase in density as a function of their size. Our estimations of the physical librations of Prometheus, Pandora, Janus, and Epimetheus are consistent with a homogeneous interior, but for Pandora a heterogeneous interior is also plausible.

7. Spherical harmonic decomposition and interpretation of the shapes of the small Saturnian inner moons

Abstract: Context. The Cassini-Huygens space mission made a series of observations of Saturn’s small satellites during its grand finale stage. These measurements were performed in order to study the shape, geology, and surface composition of the small satellites as well as to study the impact of the environment, in particular the rings, on these small bodies. Aims. The purpose of this study is to focus on the shape analysis of the small Saturnian satellites in order to describe their global figure and large-scale topography, as well as to deduce fundamental quantities, gravity field, and amplitude of the diurnal libration by assuming that the bodies are homogeneous. Methods. We used two approaches in this study. On the one hand, we directly exploited the Cassini images of the small satellites by performing limb measurements and deducing a confidence interval on the shape measurements. On the other hand, we used previously published shape models which combine limb measurements and control points. These shape models were then decomposed and described in spherical harmonics. Results. We found that the shape of the small satellites can be described with a confidence interval between 50 and 150 m. The low degree in spherical harmonics (degree 2) indicated that Telesto, Pandora, Pan, Janus, and Helene have a degree 2 shape close to the Omega sequence, which was defined recently, where the potential is constant along a meridian perpendicular to the longest axis. The degree 2 shape of Epimetheus, on the other hand, is close to the Roche sequence. In contrast, Prometheus, Calypso, and Atlas are in the Low-Brown region. The root mean square spectrum and spherical harmonic maps then allowed us to describe the topography of the satellites, and in particular to highlight equatorial ridges for some satellites including Daphnis. Finally, our estimates of the libration amplitude in the homogeneous case provide values in agreement with previously published librational measurements for Epimetheus while highlighting the proximity of the resonance for Epimetheus, Pandora, and Prometheus. Conclusions. The high resolution images of the internal satellites have allowed us to describe the geology and the geophysics of these bodies. Future comparison of these amplitudes with new librational measurements deduced, for example, by the astrometric method, will allow us to obtain information on the internal structure of these bodies. Similar studies could be carried out on the internal satellites of Jupiter using images from the Europa Clipper (NASA) or JUICE (ESA) missions.

Abstract: As a prospective study for a future exploration of Venus, we compute the tidal response of Venus' interior assuming various mantle compositions and temperature profiles representative of different scenarios of Venus' formation and evolution. The mantle density and seismic velocities are modeled from thermodynamical equilibria of mantle minerals and used to predict the moment of inertia, Love numbers and tide-induced phase lag characterizing the signature of the internal structure in the gravity field. The viscoelasticity of the mantle is parameterized using an Andrade rheology. From the models considered here, the moment of inertia lies in the range of 0.327 to 0.342, corresponding to a core radius of 2900 to 3450 km. Viscoelasticity of the mantle strongly increases the potential Love number relative to previously published elastic models. Due to the anelasticity effects, we show that the possibility of a completely solid metal core inside Venus cannot be ruled out based on the available estimate of k2 from the Magellan mission [Konopliv and Yoder, 1996]. A Love number k2 lower than 0.27 would indicate the presence of a fully solid iron core while, for larger values, solutions with an entirely or partially liquid core are possible. Precise determination of the Love numbers, k2 and h2, together with an estimate of the tidal phase lag, are required to determine the state and size of the core, as well as the composition and viscosity of the mantle.

Abstract: The tidal potential generated by bodies in the solar system contains Poisson terms, i.e., periodic terms with linearly time-dependent amplitudes. The influence of these terms in the Earth’s rotation, although expected to be small, could be of interest in the present context of high accuracy modelling. We have studied their contribution in the rotation of a non rigid Earth with elastic mantle and liquid core. Starting from the Liouville equations, we computed analytically the contribution in the wobble and showed that the presently-used transfer function must be supplemented by additional terms to be used in convolution with the amplitude of the Poisson terms of the potential and inversely proportional to (σ − σn)2 where σ is the forcing frequency and σn are the eigenfrequencies associated with the retrograde free core nutation and the Chandler wobble. These results have been detailed in a paper that we published in Astron. Astrophys. in 2007. In the present paper, we further examine the contribution from the core on the wobble and the nutation. In particular, we examine the contribution on extreme cases such as for wobble frequencies near the Free Core Nutation Frequency (FCN) or for long period nutations. In addition to the analytical computation, we used a time-domain approach through a numerical model to examine the core and mantle motions and discuss the analytical results.

Abstract: Europa, the smallest of the Galilean satellites, has a young icy surface and most likely contains an internal ocean. The primary objective of possible future missions to Europa is the unambiguous detection and characterization of a subsurface ocean. The thickness of the overlying icy shell provides important information on the thermal evolution of the satellite and on the interaction between the ocean and the surface, the latter being fundamental for astrobiology. However, the thickness is not well known, and estimates range from several hundred of meters to some ten of kilometers. Here, we investigate the use of libration (rotation variation) observations to study the interior structure of Europa and in particular its icy shell. A dynamical libration model is developed, which includes gravitational coupling between the icy shell and the heavy solid interior. The amplitude of the main libration signal at 3.55~days (the orbital period) is shown to depend on Europa's shape and structure. Models of the interior structure of Europa are constructed and the equatorial flattening of the internal layers, which are key parameters for the libration, are calculated by assuming that Europa is in hydrostatic equilibrium. Europa's flattened shape is assumed to be due to rotation and permanent tides, and we extend the classical Radau equation for rotationally flattened bodies to include also tidal deformation. We show that the presence of an ocean increases the amplitude of libration by about 10\%, depending mainly on the thickness of the icy shell. Therefore, libration observations offer possibility of detection of a subsurface ocean in Europa and estimation of the thickness of its overlying icy shell. ispartof: Icarus vol:195 issue:1 pages:386-399 status: published

Abstract: The internal structure of Mercury is the most puzzling among the terrestrial planets. The space missions MESSENGER and the upcoming BepiColombo as well as ground-based radar measurements will play an important role in constraining our understanding of the structure, formation, and evolution of Mercury. The development of a complete theory of the coupled spin-orbit motion of Mercury within the Solar System is an essential complement to observational data and will improve significantly our knowledge of the planet. Prior work concerning the effect of core-mantle couplings on the rotation of Mercury has assumed that the obliquity of Mercury is equal to zero and that its orbit is Keplerian. This work deals with the Hermean core-mantle interactions in a realistic model of the orbital and rotational motions of Mercury. To this aim, we have used the SONYR model of the Solar System including Mercury’s spin-orbit motion (SONYR is the acronym of Spin-Orbit N-bodY Relativistic model). We studied the dynamical behavior of the rotational motion of Mercury considered as a solid body including either a solid core or a liquid core. The liquid core and the mantle are assumed to be coupled through an inertial torque on the ellipsoidal core-mantle boundary. We determined Mercury’s rotation for a large set of interior structure models of Mercury to be able to identify and to clarify the impact of the core motion on the librations. In this paper, we present a comparative study of the librations resulting from different models of the internal structure. The geophysical models have been calculated for a three-layer planet composed of a solid mantle, a liquid outer core, and a solid inner core. We find that (i) the influence of inertial coupling is of the order of a milliarcsecond for a core ellipticity of the order of 10 −4 ; (ii) the amplitude of the 88-day libration depends essentially on the radius of the core or, equivalently, on the concentration of sulfur in the core; and (iii) the range of amplitude values is 19 arcsec, indicating the possibility to discriminate between models of internal structure by using accurate libration measurements.

Abstract: International audience; We present a simple dynamical model of the rotation of Mercury in which the Hermean rotation is composed of two commensurabilities: (i) a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance between fast variables and (ii) a 1:1 synchronous precession of both orbital and rotational nodes. We investigate the coupling between these two degrees of freedom. First, we study the global phase space of Mercury and quantify the libration areas. Second, we concentrate on the present location of Mercury. The impact of the slow degree of freedom on the fast one can be modeled through the adiabatic invariant, whereas the impact of the fast degree of freedom on the slow one is clearly represented by Poincaré sections. In addition, the adiabatic invariant theory leads to a simple analytical model of the rotation of Mercury where the two coupled degrees of freedom are taken into account. This model can be used in different applications that require a first-order rotational motion such as the one describing the influence of the precession and rotation of the planet on the orbit of an artificial satellite around Mercury.

Abstract: One major objective of MESSENGER and BepiColombo spatial missions is to accurately measure Mercury's rotation and its obliquity in order to obtain constraints on internal structure of the planet. Which is the obliquity's dynamical behavior deriving from a complete spin-orbit motion of Mercury simultaneously integrated with planetary interactions? We have used our SONYR model integrating the spin-orbit N-body problem applied to the solar System (Sun and planets). For lack of current accurate observations or ephemerides of Mercury's rotation, and therefore for lack of valid initial conditions for a numerical integration, we have built an original method for finding the libration center of the spin-orbit system and, as a consequence, for avoiding arbitrary amplitudes in librations of the spin-orbit motion as well as in Mercury's obliquity. The method has been carried out in two cases: (1) the spin-orbit motion of Mercury in the 2-body problem case (Sun-Mercury) where an uniform precession of the Keplerian orbital plane is kinematically added at a fixed inclination (S2K case), (2) the spin-orbit motion of Mercury in the N-body problem case (Sun and planets) (Sn case). We find that the remaining amplitude of the oscillations in the Sn case is one order of magnitude larger than in the S2K case, namely 4 versus 0.4 arcseconds (peak-to-peak). The mean obliquity is also larger, namely 1.98 versus 1.80 arcminutes, for a difference of 10.8 arcseconds. Abstract: Context. The tidal potential generated by bodies in the solar system contains Poisson terms, i.e., periodic terms with linearly timedependent amplitudes. The influence of these terms on the Earth’s rotation, although expected to be small, is of interest for high accuracy modeling. Aims. Therefore, we study their contribution to the rotation of a non-rigid Earth with an elastic mantle and liquid core. Methods. Starting from Liouville’s equations, and following an analytical treatment, we obtain the relations accounting for Poisson terms in the forcing and providing the solution for the wobble. Results. We show that the transfer function between rigid and non rigid nutation amplitudes, as usually defined in the literature, must be supplemented by additional terms proportional to the amplitude of the Poisson term of the potential. These new terms are inversely proportional to (σ − σN)2 where σ is the forcing frequency and σN are the eigenfrequencies associated with the retrograde free core nutation and the Chandler wobble. The highest contribution to the nutation is 6 μas (Δψ) on the term2l − 2F + 2D − 2Ω and remains below 1 μas for the other terms. A contribution of 88 μas/cy is found to the obliquity rate. We evaluate the variations of the third component of the wobble of the Earth and of the core in response to a zonal tidal potential, and show that there is no significant change.

16. A recently formed ocean inside Saturn's moon Mimas.

Abstract: Moons potentially harbouring a global ocean are tending to become relatively common objects in the Solar System 1 . The presence of these long-lived global oceans is generally betrayed by surface modification owing to internal dynamics 2 . Hence, Mimas would be the most unlikely place to look for the presence of a global ocean 3 . Here, from detailed analysis of Mimas's orbital motion based on Cassini data, with a particular focus on Mimas's periapsis drift, we show that its heavily cratered icy shell hides a global ocean, at a depth of 20-30 kilometres. Eccentricity damping implies that the ocean is likely to be less than 25 million years old and still evolving. Our simulations show that the ocean-ice interface reached a depth of less than 30 kilometres only recently (less than 2-3 million years ago), a time span too short for signs of activity at Mimas's surface to have appeared., (© 2024. 17. Geologic Constraints on the Formation and Evolution of Saturn's Mid-Sized Moons.

Abstract: Saturn's mid-sized icy moons have complex relationships with Saturn's interior, the rings, and with each other, which can be expressed in their shapes, interiors, and geology. Observations of their physical states can, thus, provide important constraints on the ages and formation mechanism(s) of the moons, which in turn informs our understanding of the formation and evolution of Saturn and its rings. Here, we describe the cratering records of the mid-sized moons and the value and limitations of their use for constraining the histories of the moons. We also discuss observational constraints on the interior structures of the moons and geologically-derived inferences on their thermal budgets through time. Overall, the geologic records of the moons (with the exception of Mimas) include evidence of epochs of high heat flows, short- and long-lived subsurface oceans, extensional tectonics, and considerable cratering. Curiously, Mimas presents no clear evidence of an ocean within its surface geology, but its rotation and orbit indicate a present-day ocean. While the moons need not be primordial to produce the observed levels of interior evolution and geologic activity, there is likely a minimum age associated with their development that has yet to be determined. Uncertainties in the populations impacting the moons makes it challenging to further constrain their formation timeframes using craters, whereas the characteristics of their cores and other geologic inferences of their thermal evolutions may help narrow down their potential histories. Disruptive collisions may have also played an important role in the formation and evolution of Saturn's mid-sized moons, and even the rings of Saturn, although more sophisticated modeling is needed to determine the collision conditions that produce rings and moons that fit the observational constraints. 18. The lunar solid inner core and the mantle overturn.

Abstract: Seismological models from Apollo missions provided the first records of the Moon inner structure with a decrease in seismic wave velocities at the core-mantle boundary 1-3 . The resolution of these records prevents a strict detection of a putative lunar solid inner core and the impact of the lunar mantle overturn in the lowest part of the Moon is still discussed 4-7 . Here we combine geophysical and geodesic constraints from Monte Carlo exploration and thermodynamical simulations for different Moon internal structures to show that only models with a low viscosity zone enriched in ilmenite and an inner core present densities deduced from thermodynamic constraints compatible with densities deduced from tidal deformations. We thus obtain strong indications in favour of the lunar mantle overturn scenario and, in this context, demonstrate the existence of the lunar inner core with a radius of 258 ± 40 km and density 7,822 ± 1,615 kg m -3 . Our results question the evolution of the Moon magnetic field thanks to its demonstration of the existence of the inner core and support a global mantle overturn scenario that brings substantial insights on the timeline of the lunar bombardment in the first billion years of the Solar System 8 ., (© 2023. 19. A partially differentiated interior for (1) Ceres deduced from its gravity field and shape.

Abstract: Remote observations of the asteroid (1) Ceres from ground- and space-based telescopes have provided its approximate density and shape, leading to a range of models for the interior of Ceres, from homogeneous to fully differentiated. A previously missing parameter that can place a strong constraint on the interior of Ceres is its moment of inertia, which requires the measurement of its gravitational variation together with either precession rate or a validated assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. However, Earth-based remote observations cannot measure gravity variations and the magnitude of the precession rate is too small to be detected. Here we report gravity and shape measurements of Ceres obtained from the Dawn spacecraft, showing that it is in hydrostatic equilibrium with its inferred normalized mean moment of inertia of 0.37. These data show that Ceres is a partially differentiated body, with a rocky core overlaid by a volatile-rich shell, as predicted in some studies. Furthermore, we show that the gravity signal is strongly suppressed compared to that predicted by the topographic variation. This indicates that Ceres is isostatically compensated, such that topographic highs are supported by displacement of a denser interior. In contrast to the asteroid (4) Vesta, this strong compensation points to the presence of a lower-viscosity layer at depth, probably reflecting a thermal rather than compositional gradient. To further investigate the interior structure, we assume a two-layer model for the interior of Ceres with a core density of 2,460-2,900 kilograms per cubic metre (that is, composed of CI and CM chondrites), which yields an outer-shell thickness of 70-190 kilometres. The density of this outer shell is 1,680-1,950 kilograms per cubic metre, indicating a mixture of volatiles and denser materials such as silicates and salts. Although the gravity and shape data confirm that the interior of Ceres evolved thermally, its partially differentiated interior indicates an evolution more complex than has been envisioned for mid-sized (less than 1,000 kilometres across) ice-rich rocky bodies.

20. Constraints on Mimas' interior from Cassini ISS libration measurements.

Abstract: Like our Moon, the majority of the solar system's satellites are locked in a 1:1 spin-orbit resonance; on average, these satellites show the same face toward the planet at a constant rotation rate equal to the satellite's orbital rate. In addition to the uniform rotational motion, physical librations (oscillations about an equilibrium) also occur. The librations may contain signatures of the satellite's internal properties. Using stereophotogrammetry on Cassini Image Science Subsystem (ISS) images, we measured longitudinal physical forced librations of Saturn's moon Mimas. Our measurements confirm all the libration amplitudes calculated from the orbital dynamics, with one exception. This amplitude depends mainly on Mimas' internal structure and has an observed value of twice the predicted one, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. After considering various possible interior models of Mimas, we argue that the satellite has either a large nonhydrostatic interior, or a hydrostatic one with an internal ocean beneath a thick icy shell., (Copyright © 2014, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)
