Sesame is an ancient crop and is often called as Queen of seeds. Sesame oil is consumed from ancient times for its extensive health benefits. The study was aimed to analyze financial feasibility of processing of sesame to sesame edible oil in Northern Telangana Zone of Telangana state where sesame is produced extensively. The data was collected from three districts from NTZ where sesame is grown extensively. Random sampling method is used to select the sesame processors in the study area. The data has been collected from 30 sesame processors from three districts through pre schedules. The data was analysed by using discounted cash flow techniques involving Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Net Present Worth (NPW), Benefit cost Ratio (BCR) were employed. Result: The Net Present Worth of the processing units in the study area was positive and the results revealed that the sesame processing units higher IRR (30.33) and BCR (1.60) greater than one. The study showed that sesame processing units in the study area are financially feasible and profitable. The study suggests to increase awareness about the consumption and health benefits of using sesame oil in the study area.

The problem of antibiotic resistance has garnered too much attention over the last few decades for posing a global hazard to the clinical handling and the inhibition of several deadly infections caused by bacteria. It burdens the world not only clinically but also economically... Antibiotic agents known as carbapenems are a very effective and typically designated for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. To identify a suitable antibiotic combination to be used in vivo, one must be able to determine the synergism between the antibiotics in vitro. Several methods, such as the checkerboard method, multiple-combination bactericidal test, time-kill and E-test, have been used for this purpose. However, the lack of proper standardization procedures, types of bacterial agents, bacterial load, stage of infection and other factors make it very difficult to reproduce or correlate the results with other methods.Carbapenem-destroying lactases, which have recently emerged as mechanisms of resistance, are increasing in number and decreasing the treatment alternatives available. These infections are treated with colistin and tigecycline, but monotherapy may result in clinical breakdown because of a variety of factors. To control these infections, clinicians often choose combinations of drugs over monotherapy. There is an extreme lack of information on synergistic antibiotic combinations accounting for the diverse mechanisms of GNB resistance commonly encountered. The incidence of carbapenem-resistant GNB in Indian articles is also unknown. Therefore, we anticipate that this study may provide methodology for the selection of an appropriate antibiotic combination.

Background: In India, fertility rate demonstrates a descending trend whereas there is upsurge in infertility rate. In addition, a knowledge gap concerning fertility has been identified among the current generation. Aim: To quantify the fertility awareness and in-depth exploration of perceptions about fertility among procreant age group. Materials and Methods: Explanatory mixed method design with sequential data collection, nested sampling technique was assumed. Purposive sampling was incorporated to recruit 1000 participants into the prospective cohort study. Awareness was measured using fertility knowledge questionnaire, while qualitative data were collected by in-depth interview of 28 participants until data saturation. The study was intact in terms of ethical compliance. Results: Sociodemographic data revealed that the mean age of the respondents was 31.33 ± 6.4 years, 59.6% were female, 78.3% were married, 61.5% completed their university education, 76.0% were working. The mean of overall fertility awareness score was 50.2 ± 13.5. There was no statistical difference in responses of the subgroups (P > 0.05) and only educational status was significantly associated (P = 0.001*) with awareness scores. Perceptions pertinent to fertility were evidently varying amongst the general group and couples accessing fertility treatment, which subsequently was elucidated with the qualitative thematic analysis. Conclusion: Procreant age group of western India demonstrated low to average fertility awareness. Assertive recommendations were proposed for fertility awareness initiatives across both genders, irrespective of educational status.

Due to the necessity of developing new materials with better anti-corrosive properties, bulk metallic glasses are the focus of many research projects. In this study, a metallic glass with Fe48Cr15Mo14C15B6Y2 composition was produced by high-pressure atomization spray and densified by Spark Plasma Sintering. Different sintering cycles, temperatures, and pressures were carried out to conserve the amorphous structure while increasing its density. The temperatures used for this study were below the glass transition temperature, and the uniaxial force was variated between 50 and 400 MPa. Amorphous samples with nearly 98% of relative density were obtained. The effect of the sintering cycle used on the phase transformation and microstructure of the materials was studied. Additionally, the porosity and crystallinity were related to the corrosion resistance properties through electrochemical characterization.

Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with non-MRI-conditional cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has been shown to be safe when performed under closely monitored protocols. However, the safety of MRI in patients with devices with a nearly depleted battery has not been reported. Methods Prospective data were collected between January 2008 and May 2015 in patients with non-MRI-conditional CIEDs undergoing clinically indicated MRI under institutional protocol. Patients who were pacemaker dependent were excluded. Patients whose devices were at elective replacement indicator (ERI) at the time of MRI or close to ERI (ERI or replacement for battery depletion within 3 months of scan) were identified through database review and analyzed for clinical events. Results MRI scans (n = 569) were performed in 442 patients. Of these, we identified 13 scans performed with a nearly depleted battery in nine patients. All scans with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs, n = 9) were uneventful. However, two scans with pacemakers close to ERI resulted in a power-on-reset (PoR) event. One scan with a pacemaker close to ERI that was programmed to DOO mode reached ERI during MRI and automatically changed to VVI mode. Additionally, one scan with a pacemaker at ERI did not allow programming. All pacemakers with events were implanted before 2005. Conclusion Patients with pacemakers and ICDs with a nearly depleted battery can safely undergo MRI when patients are not pacemaker dependent. Attention should be paid because old devices can result in PoR or ERI during MRI, which may lead to oversensing and inhibition of pacing.

A V k -super vertex in-magic labeling (Vk -SVIML) is an one-to-one onto function f : V(D) ∪ A(D) → {1,2…, P + q} such that f(V(D)) = {1,2…, p} and for every ν ∈ V(D), f(ν) + ω k(ν) = M for some positive integer M. A digraph that admits a V k -SVIML is called V k -super vertex in-magic (V k -SVIM). In this paper, we study some properties of V k -SVIML in digraphs. We characterized the digraphs which are V k -SVIM. Also, we find the magic constant for Ek -regular digraphs. Farther, we characterized the unidirectional cycles and union of unidirectional cycles which are V 2-SMM.

Clay brick manufacturing is a sector which involves a lot of firing processes requiring higher temperature. To maintain this temperature, large amount of fuel in the form of wood, coal, biomass etc. need to be burnt in the kiln causing serious issues of air pollution. Also, with the increase in the number of industries coming up, large amount of un-disposable waste gets accumulated. If suitable remedies are not adopted for its safe disposal, it may pollute the water bodies through runoff. This project is an effort to reduce the brick firing temperature in the kiln to about 600 °C thereby reducing the cost of production and making the whole process environmental friendly. This work will put forward a suitable alternative for the safe disposal of industrial debris like quarry dust and glass powder by incorporating them as a partial substitute for river sand which is one of the costly constituent of clay brick and thereby further reducing the cost of production. Experimental results showed higher compressive strength of 21.31 N/mm2when the brick was casted with mix proportion of Cement: Sand: Red earth: Glass Powder: Quarry Dust = 4:1:1:1.5:2.5. The strength measured at temperature 600 °C met the requirements of the National Standards.

All organisms are faced with survival and fitness challenges. However, differences in how ectotherms and endotherms deal with these challenges causes confusion when theoretical explanations are proposed. Herein, an immunochallenged, immature ectothermic vertebrate increased growth in the face of immunochallenge, reminiscent of up-regulated physiological efficiency termed hormesis. The immunochallenged subjects increased food intake relative to control animals, a largely ignored possibility in previous studies. This likely led to an energy surplus that fueled additional growth. Although there was increased resource demand from the immune response that exceeded internal stores, the acceptably sized food items contained more resources than immunologically-driven demand required. We theorize that because ectotherms lack significant internally-stored resources compared to endotherms, they must feed to fuel increased physiological demand. This can lead to excess resource intake because the minimum acceptably sized prey contains more available resources than upregulation required. This creates a pseudo-hormetic hormetic response, fueled by excess food intake rather than significant improved physiological efficiency. Further, we speculate that lifespan and/or maturity may interact with resource management ectotherms, though our data are inconclusive on this matter. Ultimately, our data suggest additional growth when ectotherms face stressors is a pseudo-hormetic response stemming from increased food intake instead of upregulated physiological efficiency.

The present investigation is an attempt to study the influence of seaweed liquid fertiliger (SLF) extracted from the marine green algae ulva lactuca on the growth parameters of Abelmoschus esculentus (l) medikus. The seeds were soaked in different concentrations of SLF viz., 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 20% and control for 6h. The foliar spry was applied twice at four concentrations of seaweed extract. The maximum growth was recorded at 5% concentration viz., seed germination, shoot length, root length, no. of flowers, no. of fruits, fresh weight and dry weight when compare to control and remaining concentrations of seaweed extract. The seaweed extract are found effective in increasing the growth parameters.

Methylphenidate (MP) is a psychostimulant widely prescribed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Although generally well tolerated, growth deficits have been reported in children and adolescents undergoing MP treatment. This study was designed to elucidate the skeletal effects of chronic MP administration in adolescent rats. Male, 4-week-old rats received one of two doses of MP (MP-Low or MP-High) delivered for 8 hours a day via drinking water, or were untreated (water only). After 13 weeks, half were sacrificed (N=12/group) and the remaining rats were left to recover, untreated for 5 additional weeks. Femora, tibiae, and L5 vertebra were analyzed using calipers, DXA, and mechanical testing. Immediately following treatment, MP decreased femoral anterior-posterior diameter (5% and 9% for MP-Low and MP-High, respectively), femoral and tibial Bone Mineral Density (BMD) (6% and 5% for MP-High femora & tibiae, respectively), and Bone Mineral Content (BMC) (9% for MP-High femora and tibiae). In addition, femora from MP treated rats had reduced ultimate force (20% for MP-High) and energy to failure (20% and 33% for MP-Low and MP-High, respectively). However, after recovery, there were no statistically significant differences for any measured parameters. Despite these effects on the appendicular skeleton, no differences were identified between vertebral samples at either time-point. In summary, MP treatment resulted in smaller, less mineralized, and weaker bones at appendicular sites, but did not affect the axial site. Although these effects were ameliorated within 5 weeks, these data suggest that adolescents undergoing MP treatment may be at an increased risk for long bone fractures.

Postoperative incontinence is multifactorial after radical prostatectomy. Using endorectal coil MRI, we examined features of the male urethra and accompanying muscular sphincter to predict continence after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).80 patients underwent preoperative 1.5 Tesla endorectal coil MRI. Urethral length was measured in the coronal plane. All patients underwent RARP. Questionnaires were completed by patients at monthly intervals. The primary end point was time to continence defined as necessitating 0 to 1 pad per day (PPD). Statistical analysis was performed using Cox regression models to create both univariate and multivariate survival models.Mean age was 59.7 (standard deviation [SD] 7.1); 98% had bilateral nerve sparing. Mean urethral length was 17.1 mm (SD 4.5 mm). Mean prostate size was 34.7 g (SD 17.8). By 3 months, 60 patients achieved 1 PPD (mean 8.1 weeks, SD 9.4) and 34 patients achieved 0 PPD (mean 10.5 weeks, SD 8.0). Time to social continence was significantly related to prostate size both as a continuous variable (P=0.01), and as a dichotomized variable of ≥ 50 vs50 g (P=0.02). Increased urethral length was related to decreased time to continence both as a continuous variable (P=0.06), and when dichotomized to ≥ 20 vs20 mm (P=0.08). In addition to larger prostate size (hazard ratio [HR] 0.97, P0.04), older age (0.95 P0.025) was also associated with a longer time to achieve 0 PPD. Multivariate analysis revealed that longer urethral length was associated with a faster recovery of continence (HR 1.11, P0.01). After controlling for age and urethral length, patients with a prostate size ≥ 50 g had 75% lower likelihood of achieving continence at all time points when compared with patients with prostate size50 g (HR 0.25; 95% confidence interval: 0.06, 1.06; P=0.06).Longer urethral length increased the likelihood of achieving continence at all time points postoperatively. Advanced age and larger prostate size were negatively associated with continence outcomes.

While the importance of Wnt signaling in skeletal development and homeostasis is well documented, little is known regarding its function in fracture repair. We hypothesized that activation and inactivation of Wnt signaling would enhance and impair fracture repair, respectively. Femoral fractures were generated in Lrp5 knockout mice (Lrp5−/−) and wild-type littermates (Lrp5+/+), as well as C57BL/6 mice. Lrp5−/− and Lrp5+/+mice were untreated, while C57BL/6 mice were treated 2×/week with vehicle or anti-Dkk1 antibodies (Dkk1 Ab) initiated immediately postoperatively (Day 0) or 4 days postoperatively (Day 4). Fractures were radiographed weekly until sacrifice at day 28, followed by DXA, pQCT, and biomechanical analyses. Lrp5−/− mice showed impaired repair compared to Lrp5+/+ mice, as evidenced by reduced callus area, BMC, BMD, and biomechanical properties. The effects of Dkk1 Ab treatment depended on the timing of initiation. Day 0 initiation enhanced repair, with significant gains seen for callus area, BMC, BMD, and biomechanical properties, whereas Day 4 initiation had no effect. These results validated our hypothesis that Wnt signaling influences fracture repair, with prompt activation enhancing repair and inactivation impairing it. Furthermore, these data suggest that activation of Wnt signaling during fracture repair may have clinical utility in facilitating fracture repair.

Our study appears to represent the western-most report of autumn breeding within this species' range, the first report of potential environmental cues stimulating the occurrence of fall breeding, and the first examination of egg clutches and spermatogenesis from fall breeding populations. We conducted calling surveys throughout the year over a 4 year period extending from 1999–2002 to determine the frequency of fall breeding in this species. Southern Leopard Frogs bred 20 September 2002 during heavy rains. Although we observed sporadic individual calling males in other years, lack of rain seemed to suppress breeding activities despite the presence of flooded agronomic fields and ditches in the region. We characterized 11 egg masses and the testicular condition of three males during years when fall breeding was observed. BACKGROUND Reticulin-stained bone marrow fibrosis is associated with a poor prognosis in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Resolution of fibrosis with therapy may improve patient outcome. METHODS The effect of imatinib therapy on bone marrow fibrosis was evaluated in 40 patients with chronic-phase CML who were treated after interferon-α failure. RESULTS Thirty-one patients (78%) had severe (Grade 3 or 4) reticulin fibrosis prior to therapy. After imatinib therapy was administered for 3 to > 24 months, fibrosis was reduced by at least 2 grades in 19 of the 31 patients (61%) and by at least 1 grade in 34 patients (85%). There was no correlation noted between reduction of fibrosis and cytogenetic response. However, a reduction in fibrosis was found to correlate with a reduction in bone marrow megakaryocytosis (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Treatment with imatinib mesylate appears to reduce CML-associated bone marrow fibrosis in most patients who are treated during the chronic phase of disease. BACKGROUND The effect on prognosis of adding imatinib mesylate to the treatment of patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) has not been explored fully. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the benefit of adding imatinib to the treatment sequence of patients with early chronic phase Ph-positive CML who received interferon α (IFN)-based regimens as frontline therapy. METHODS A total of 201 patients with early chronic phase Ph-positive CML who were treated on our 3 recent frontline IFN–based programs and were impacted early by the availability of sequential therapy with imatinib were analyzed. Their outcome was compared with that of a historical control group of 293 patients treated from 1982 until 1990 who were treated with IFN programs for early chronic phase CML and who did not have the opportunity of early access to imatinib (because it was not available during that period). Multivariate analysis was used to evaluate the independent effect of imatinib therapy on survival. RESULTS Of 201 patients who were treated, 159 patients (79%) had their regimen changed sequentially to imatinib after a median duration of 14 months of IFN therapy. Of 139 patients who continued evaluation at our institution, 101 patients (73%; 64% of the total group) achieved a complete cytogenetic response, and 20 of 80 patients analyzed (25%; 10% of the total group) had no disease according to molecular studies (quantitative polymerase chain reaction studies). The estimated 5-year survival rate for the total study group of 201 patients was 86%. Survival of this group was significantly superior to the historic control group of IFN-treated patients who did not have the benefit of imatinib (P = 0.03). The trend also was observed within defined CML risk groups. Imatinib therapy was confirmed as an independent, significant, favorable prognostic factor for survival by multivariate analysis, after accounting for the independent prognostic effect of pretreatment prognostic factors (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The current analysis is the first to indicate the independent, favorable effect of imatinib on the survival of patients with Ph-positive CML. BACKGROUND Older age is a consistent poor prognostic factor in patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Whether this is related to an intrinsic worse disease biology or to inadequate drug delivery or excessive treatment-associated toxicity is unknown. The availability of imatinib mesylate, a selective, Bcr-Abl-targeted therapy that is administered orally with minimal side effects, may clarify whether older age would remain an adverse factor (thus, implying a different age-related CML biology). METHODS Seven hundred forty-seven patients in different phases of Ph-positive CML who were treated with imatinib from 1999 until the time of last follow-up were evaluated. Among them, 187 patients had newly diagnosed, early chronic phase CML; 351 patients had chronic phase CML after interferon α (IFN) failure; 133 patients had accelerated phase CML; and 76 patients had blastic phase CML. The imatinib daily dose varied from 400 mg to 800 mg orally, according to the protocol design. Patients were categorized into a group of older patients (age 60 years or older) or younger patients (age younger than 60 years). Their characteristics, responses to therapy, and survival were compared by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS One hundred eighty-seven patients had newly diagnosed CML, and 49 patients (26%) were in the older age group. Older patients had similar cytogenetic response rates and survival compared with younger patients. Among 351 patients with late chronic phase CML after IFN failure, 120 patients (34%) were in the older age group. Although the older patients had a lower incidence of achievement of complete cytogenetic response (Ph, 0%) by univariate analysis (56% vs. 44%; P = 0.05), age was not found to be an independent poor prognostic factor in the multivariate analysis. Similarly, older age was not an adverse poor prognostic factor for survival. Forty-two of 133 patients (32%) with accelerated phase CML were older. The incidence of any cytogenetic response was lower in older patients (53% vs. 33%; P = 0.04), but age was not significant in the multivariate analysis. Older patients also had a trend toward worse survival (P = 0.09) that was not significant in the multivariate analysis. Twenty-eight of 76 patients (37%) evaluated in blastic phase were older. Older age was not a significant prognostic factor either for achieving response or for survival. CONCLUSIONS With imatinib therapy, older age appears to have lost much of its prognostic relevance. This suggests that the previous poor prognosis observed with older age was related to treatment-associated factors (e.g., toxicity with allogeneic transplantation or with IFN therapy) rather than to an intrinsic, different disease biology of CML in older patients. BACKGROUND Little is known regarding long-term prognosis among patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) who achieve a complete cytogenetic response (0% Ph-positive cells) after treatment with interferon-α. METHODS The authors analyzed 512 patients with Ph-positive, early chronic-phase CML who were treated with interferon-based therapies between 1981–1995 for the incidence and durability of complete cytogenetic response, and in relation to long-term prognosis. RESULTS One hundred forty patients (27%) achieved a complete cytogenetic response. Their 10-year survival rate was 78%. At the time of last follow-up, 44 patients (31%, 9% of the total) were alive, 21 in first and 23 in second durable complete cytogenetic response (median, 127 months; range, 88–191 months); 39 patients had not received any therapy for a median of 50 months (range, 11–139 months). Analysis by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction in 78 patients during complete cytogenetic response showed 46 who had achieved at least 1 complete molecular response. Five of these 78 patients had died by the time of last follow-up, but only 2 had died of disease-specific causes. Recurrence rates were significantly lower and cytogenetic response durations were significantly longer among patients who achieved at least one complete molecular response. CONCLUSIONS Achieving a complete cytogenetic or molecular response after therapy with interferon-α appears to be associated with excellent long-term prognosis. Approximately 10% of patients reportedly can achieve durable complete cytogenetic response, with or without continuation of interferon. This finding emphasizes the potential of long-term event-free survival in CML patients outside the context of allogeneic stem cell transplantation, which may be improved with new therapies such as imatinib mesylate. BACKGROUND The authors conducted a series of four Phase I–II trials of high-dose and intermediate-dose docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (TPF)-based induction chemotherapy for patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). The chemotherapy regimens and response rates for each trial were published previously. In the current analysis, the authors report the data on long-term survival, patterns of failure, and morbidity among the patients who were treated at their institution. METHODS A total of 101 patients with previously untreated, locally advanced, curable SCCHN were entered onto the studies. Overall, 68 patients (67%) had N2–N3 disease, and 86 patients (85%) had Stage IV disease. Patients were treated with combinations of TPF with or without leucovorin. Cycles were repeated every 21–28 days for a total of 3 cycles followed by hyperfractionated radiotherapy. RESULTS After a median follow-up of 49 months, 65 patients (64%) remain alive with no evidence of disease (NED), and 3 patients remain alive with disease, for an overall survival rate of 67% (68 patients). Twenty-six patients had locoregional recurrences (LRR), and 5 patients had both LRR and distant metastasis (DM). Only five patients had DM as the sole site of failure. Four patients underwent salvage surgery at the primary site and remain alive with NED. Excluding 17 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, of 84 patients, 55 patients remain alive with NED (65%). Notably, 43 of 84 patients (51%) had oropharyngeal primary tumors, and 30 of those patients remain alive with NED (70%). Significant morbidity was low, with two treatment-related deaths. All but two of the surviving patients are able to swallow and had their feeding tubes removed. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that docetaxel adds incrementally to the efficacy of cisplatin and fluorouracil. Local-regional failures continue to be the major impediment to cure in these patients. Given the increase in local-regional dose intensity with chemoradiation, sequential treatment plans that integrate induction chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy seem to be the logical next step. BACKGROUND Imatinib mesylate induces high rates of hematologic and cytogenetic response in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). During therapy with imatinib, up to 45% of patients with CML reportedly experience myelosuppression ≥ Grade 3, requiring interruption of therapy and/or dose reductions. The significance of myelosuppression for response to imatinib is unknown. METHODS The authors analyzed 143 patients with late chronic-phase CML who were treated with imatinib after failing interferon. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine patient characteristics that were correlated with myelosuppression response and the association between myelosuppression and cytogenetic response. RESULTS Neutropenia ≥ Grade 3 (according to National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria) occurred in 64 patients (45%), and thrombocytopenia ≥ Grade 3 occurred in 31 patients (22%). Any myelosuppression ≥ Grade 3 was associated with a lower rate of major (P = 0.04) or complete (P = 0.01) cytogenetic responses. This was more pronounced with myelosuppression that lasted > 2 weeks. The major cytogenetic response rate was 58% with Grade ≥ 3 myelosuppression compared with a rate of 75% without Grade ≥3 myelosuppression (P = 0.03); the complete cytogenetic response rates were 36% and 63%, respectively (P = 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, pretreatment platelet count, imatinib dose reductions, and duration of myelosuppression were associated significantly with response. CONCLUSIONS Myelosuppression is an independent adverse factor for achieving cytogenetic response with imatinib in patients with CML.
