Abstract: Abstract Given sea ice's importance in global climate regulation, fully understanding the role of natural temperature and atmospheric patterns like the Arctic Oscillation (AO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) in its variability is critical. While instrumental AMO and reliable AO records are available since the mid‐1800s and 1958, respectively, satellite sea‐ice concentration data sets start only in 1979, limiting the shared timespan to study their interplay. Growth increments of the coralline algae, Clathromorphum compactum, can provide sea‐ice proxy information for years prior to 1979. We present a seasonal 210‐year algal record from Lancaster Sound in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago capturing low frequency AMO/NAO variability and high frequency interannual AO/NAO prior to 2000. We suggest that sea‐ice variability here is strongly coupled to these large‐scale climate processes, and that sea‐ice cover was greater and the AO more negative in the early and late 19th century compared to the 20th.

2. Whole transcriptome sequencing and biomineralization gene architecture associated with cultured pearl quality traits in the pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera

Abstract: Abstract Background Cultured pearls are unique gems produced by living organisms, mainly molluscs of the Pinctada genus, through the biomineralization properties of pearl sac tissue. Improvement of P. margaritifera pearl quality is one of the biggest challenges that Polynesian research has faced to date. To achieve this goal, a better understanding of the complex mechanisms related to nacre and pearl formation is essential and can now be approached through the use of massive parallel sequencing technologies. The aim of this study was to use RNA-seq to compare whole transcriptome expression of pearl sacs that had producing pearls with high and low quality. For this purpose, a comprehensive reference transcriptome of P. margaritifera was built based on multi-tissue sampling (mantle, gonad, whole animal), including different living stages (juvenile, adults) and phenotypes (colour morphotypes, sex). Results Strikingly, few genes were found to be up-regulated for high quality pearls (n = 16) compared to the up-regulated genes in low quality pearls (n = 246). Biomineralization genes up-regulated in low quality pearls were specific to prismatic and prism-nacre layers. Alternative splicing was further identified in several key biomineralization genes based on a recent P. margaritifera draft genome. Conclusion This study lifts the veil on the multi-level regulation of biomineralization genes associated with pearl quality determination.

Abstract: Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Abstract: International audience; We describe the synthesis of two new dumbbell-shaped small molecules used as near ultraviolet absorbers for transparent organic solar cell application. The electron-donor TAT units, sandwiching the central chromophore, constitute very efficient π-stacking platforms that are nevertheless highly soluble thanks to the presence of three alkyl chains. The TAT units are used in combination, with a small central electron donor unit, either a carbazole or a thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) unit. The two new dumbbell-shaped small molecules including only electron-donor units are strongly absorbing in the near UV range, due to the reduced electronic conjugation. Combined with a suitable hole mobility, the most conjugated thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based derivative, when used as electrondonor component in a bulk heterojunction organic solar cell, exhibits a 48% of average visible transmittance with a power conversion efficiency close to 2%.

Abstract: Seabroke, G. M., et al., [Context] Gaia's Early Third Data Release (EDR3) does not contain new radial velocities because these will be published in Gaia's full third data release (DR3), expected in the first half of 2022. To maximise the usefulness of EDR3, Gaia's second data release (DR2) sources (with radial velocities) are matched to EDR3 sources to allow their DR2 radial velocities to also be included in EDR3. This presents two considerations: (i) a list of 70 365 sources with potentially contaminated DR2 radial velocities has been published; and (ii) EDR3 is based on a new astrometric solution and a new source list, which means sources in DR2 may not be in EDR3. [Aims] The two aims of this work are: (i) investigate the list in order to improve the DR2 radial velocities being included in EDR3 and to avoid false-positive hypervelocity candidates; and (ii) match the DR2 sources (with radial velocities) to EDR3 sources. [Methods] Thetwo methods of this work are: (i) unpublished, preliminary DR3 radial velocities of sources on the list, and high-velocity stars not on the list, are compared with their DR2 radial velocities to identify and remove contaminated DR2 radial velocities from EDR3; and (ii) proper motions and epoch position propagation is used to attempt to match all sources with radial velocities in DR2 to EDR3 sources. The comparison of DR2 and DR3 radial velocities is used to resolve match ambiguities. [Results] EDR3 contains 7 209 831 sources with a DR2 radial velocity, which is 99.8% of sources with a radial velocity in DR2 (7 224 631). 14 800 radial velocities from DR2 are not propagated to any EDR3 sources because (i) 3871 from the list are found to either not have a DR3 radial velocity or it differs significantly from its DR2 value, and five high-velocity stars not on the list are confirmed to have contaminated radial velocities, in one case because of contamination from the non-overlapping Radial Velocity Spectrometer windows of a nearby, bright star; and (ii) 10 924 DR2 sources could not be satisfactorily matched to any EDR3 sources, so their DR2 radial velocities are also missing from EDR3. [Conclusions] The reliability of radial velocities in EDR3 has improved compared to DR2 because the update removes a small fraction of erroneous radial velocities (0.05% of DR2 radial velocities and 5.5% of the list). Lessons learnt from EDR3 (e.g. bright star contamination) will improve the radial velocities in future Gaia data releases. The main reason for radial velocities from DR2 not propagating to EDR3 is not related to DR2 radial velocity quality. Abstract: Aims. We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of different aspects of the Milky Way structure and evolution and we provide, at the same time, a description of several practical aspects of the data and examples of their usage., Methods. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. In this direction, the Gaia astrometric data alone enable the calculation of the vertical and azimuthal velocities; also, the extinction is relatively low compared to other directions in the Galactic plane. We then explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1., Results. With the improved astrometry and photometry of EDR3, we find that: (i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with oscillations in the median rotation and vertical velocities as a function of radius, vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; (ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; (iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; (iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and (v) the open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits., Conclusions. Even with our simple preliminary exploration of the Gaia EDR3, we demonstrate how, once again, these data from the European Space Agency are crucial for our understanding of the different pieces of our Galaxy and their connection to its global structure and history.

Abstract: We present the early installment of the third Gaia data release, Gaia EDR3, consisting of astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, complemented with the list of radial velocities from Gaia DR2. Gaia EDR3 contains celestial positions and the apparent brightness in G for approximately 1.8 billion sources. For 1.5 billion of those sources, parallaxes, proper motions, and the (G_BP-G_RP) colour are also available. The passbands for G, G_BP, and G_RP are provided as part of the release. For ease of use, the 7 million radial velocities from Gaia DR2 are included in this release, after the removal of a small number of spurious values. New radial velocities will appear as part of Gaia DR3. Finally, Gaia EDR3 represents an updated materialisation of the celestial reference frame (CRF) in the optical, the Gaia-CRF3, which is based solely on extragalactic sources. The creation of the source list for Gaia EDR3 includes enhancements that make it more robust with respect to high proper motion stars, and the disturbing effects of spurious and partially resolved sources. The source list is largely the same as that for Gaia DR2, but it does feature new sources and there are some notable changes. The source list will not change for Gaia DR3. Gaia EDR3 represents a significant advance over Gaia DR2, with parallax precisions increased by 30 percent, proper motion precisions increased by a factor of 2, and the systematic errors in the astrometry suppressed by 30--40 percent for the parallaxes and by a factor ~2.5 for the proper motions. The photometry also features increased precision, but above all much better homogeneity across colour, magnitude, and celestial position. A single passband for G, G_BP, and G_RP is valid over the entire magnitude and colour range, with no systematics above the 1 percent level.

Abstract: [Context] The third Gaia data release is published in two stages. The early part, Gaia EDR3, gives very precise astrometric and photometric properties for nearly two billion sources together with seven million radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The full release, Gaia DR3, will add radial velocities, spectra, light curves, and astrophysical parameters for a large subset of the sources, as well as orbits for solar system objects. [Aims] Before the publication of the catalogue, many different data items have undergone dedicated validation processes. The goal of this paper is to describe the validation results in terms of completeness, accuracy, and precision for the Gaia EDR3 data and to provide recommendations for the use of the catalogue data. [Methods] The validation processes include a systematic analysis of the catalogue contents to detect anomalies, either individual errors or statistical properties, using statistical analysis and comparisons to the previous release as well as to external data and to models. [Results] Gaia EDR3 represents a major step forward, compared to Gaia DR2, in terms of precision, accuracy, and completeness for both astrometry and photometry. Abstract: Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions., Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution., Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate., Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10) m s(-2) (or 7.33 +/- 0.51 km s(-1) Myr-1) towards alpha = 269.1 degrees +/- 5.4 degrees, delta = -31.6 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 +/- 0.35 mu as yr(-1). This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

10. Tumeurs de la fosse infratemporale : quand suspecter une tumeur maligne ? Étude rétrospective d’une série de 62 cas

Abstract: Resume Objectifs Les tumeurs de la fosse infratemporale (FIT) sont rares et leur epidemiologie mal connue. Il est parfois difficile pour le clinicien, rarement confronte a ces lesions, de distinguer une tumeur benigne d’une tumeur maligne sur les seules donnees de l’examen clinique et de l’imagerie. Les objectifs de cette etude etaient, a partir d’une serie retrospective : (i) de decrire la prevalence des differents types histologiques de tumeurs de la FIT et (ii) d’etudier l’association entre certains signes cliniques et/ou radiologiques et la presence d’une tumeur maligne. Materiel et methodes Il s’agit d’une etude retrospective monocentrique, menee dans un centre hospitalier universitaire. Tous les nouveaux cas consecutifs de tumeur de la FIT pris en charge entre janvier 2000 et decembre 2016 ont ete inclus. Le type histologique, les donnees demographiques, la presentation clinique ainsi que les donnees radiologiques ont ete analyses. Resultats Un total de 62 patients ont ete inclus. Il s’agissait de tumeurs benignes dans 74 % des cas (n = 46) et de tumeurs malignes dans 26 % des cas. Le fibrome nasopharyngien, le carcinome adenoide kystique et le schwannome etaient les types histologiques les plus frequents (47 %, 16 % et 10 % respectivement). La presence d’un trismus, d’une douleur faciale, d’une hypoesthesie faciale et l’invasion nerveuse visualisee a l’IRM etaient significativement associees a la presence d’une tumeur maligne (valeur de p Conclusion Cette etude fournit des donnees epidemiologiques generales concernant les tumeurs de la FIT et identifie plusieurs signes cliniques et radiologiques devant faire suspecter une tumeur maligne.

Abstract: Few data are available to describe the changes in incidence of pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this study was to describe changes in incidence and phenotypic presentation of pediatric-onset IBD in northern France during a 24-year period.Pediatric-onset IBD (17 years) was issued from a population-based IBD study in France between 1988 and 2011. Age groups and digestive location were defined according to the Paris classification.1,350 incident cases were recorded (8.3% of all IBD) including 990 Crohn's disease (CD), 326 ulcerative colitis (UC) and 34 IBD unclassified (IBDU). Median age at diagnosis was similar in CD (14.4 years (Q1=11.8-Q3=16.0)) and UC (14.0 years (11.0-16.0)) and did not change over time. There were significantly more males with CD (females/males=0.82) than UC (females/males=1.25) (P=0.0042). Median time between onset of symptoms and IBD diagnosis was consistently 3 months (1-6). Mean incidence was 4.4/10In this population-based study, CD and UC incidences increased dramatically in adolescents across a 24-year span, suggesting that one or more strong environmental factors may predispose this population to IBD.

Abstract: BackgroundCultured pearls are unique gems produced by living organisms, mainly molluscs of the Pinctada genus, through the biomineralization properties of pearl sac tissue. Improvement of P. margaritifera pearl quality is one of the biggest challenges that Polynesian research has faced to date. To achieve this goal, a better understanding of the complex mechanisms related to nacre and pearl formation is essential and can now be approached through the use of massive parallel sequencing technologies. The aim of this study was to use RNA-seq to compare whole transcriptome expression of pearl sacs that had producing pearls with high and low quality. For this purpose, a comprehensive reference transcriptome of P. margaritifera was built based on multi-tissue sampling (mantle, gonad, whole animal), including different living stages (juvenile, adults) and phenotypes (colour morphotypes, sex).ResultsStrikingly, few genes were found to be up-regulated for high quality pearls (n = 16) compared to the up-regulated genes in low quality pearls (n = 246). Biomineralization genes up-regulated in low quality pearls were specific to prismatic and prism-nacre layers. Alternative splicing was further identified in several key biomineralization genes based on a recent P. margaritifera draft genome.ConclusionThis study lifts the veil on the multi-level regulation of biomineralization genes associated with pearl quality determination.

Abstract: For Gaia DR2 (GDR2), 280 million spectra, collected by the RVS instrument on-board Gaia, were processed and median radial velocities were derived for 9.8 million sources brighter than Grvs = 12 mag. This paper describes the validation and properties of the median radial velocities published in GDR2. Quality tests and filters are applied to select, from the 9.8 million radial velocities, those with the quality to be published in GDR2. The accuracy of the selected sample is assessed with respect to ground-based catalogues. Its precision is estimated using both ground-based catalogues and the distribution of the Gaia radial velocity uncertainties. GDR2 contains median radial velocities for 7 224 631 stars, with Teff in the range [3550, 6900] K, which passed succesfully the quality tests. The published median radial velocities provide a full sky-coverage and have a completness with respect to the astrometric data of 77.2\% (for $G \leq 12.5$ mag). The median radial velocity residuals with respect to the ground-based surveys vary from one catalogue to another, but do not exceed a few 100s m/s. In addition, the Gaia radial velocities show a positive trend as a function of magnitude, which starts around Grvs $\sim 9$ mag and reaches about $+500$ m/s at Grvs $= 11.75$ mag. The overall precision, estimated from the median of the Gaia radial velocity uncertainties, is 1.05 km/s. The radial velocity precision is function of many parameters, in particular the magnitude and effective temperature. For bright stars, Grvs in [4, 8] mag, the precision is in the range 200-350 m/s, which is about 3 to 5 times more precise than the pre-launch specification of 1 km/s. At the faint end, Grvs = 11.75 mag, the precisions for Teff = 5000 K and 6500 K are respectively 1.4 km/s and 3.7 km/s., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Abstract: Evaluation of endoscopic ethmoidectomy performed as a day-case in terms of security, quality, and satisfaction of the patient. This prospective observatory bi-centric study over 1 year included 74 patients undergoing an ethmoidectomy respecting the eligibility criteria of ambulatory care. We recorded patients' demographic data, operative details, satisfaction, postoperative course, and follow-up results. Nasal symptoms were evaluated by SNOT-22 on preoperative appointment and postoperatively at D30. No non-absorbable nasal packing was used, eventually in the case of preoperative-bleeding absorbable gelatine packing. The postoperative follow-up took place at D1 by phone call and at D10 and D30 to assess complications, Visual Analogue Scale, and state of ethmoidal corridors by endoscopic exam. Patients benefited of bilateral ethmoidectomy in 82.4 % cases associated with septoplasty in 42 %. The majority (95 %) was discharged on the same day. Only one patient had bleeding at D0 and was kept in standard hospitalization, such as three other patients for medical or organizational reasons not related to surgery. At D1, 23 % described postoperative light bleeding but needed no revisit and pain was estimated at 1.3 (VAS). No readmission was observed, and no major complication was noted. SNOT-22 decreased successfully by 56 %, statistically related to postoperative treatment of corticosteroids and in the case of Samter triad. 97 % of patients were satisfied of the ambulatory care. These results suggest that within an experienced and dedicated day-case medical and paramedical team, ethmoidectomy can be safely performed on a day-case basis with high quality of taking care and satisfaction of patients.

17. Mesure de la concentration aérienne de COV terpéniques (dont le limonène) selon plusieurs procédures lors de pulvérisations d’un mélange d’huiles essentielles

Abstract: Resume But de l’etude Les huiles essentielles sont de plus en plus utilisees et parfois recommandees par les industriels qui fabriquent les produits qui eliminent les allergenes. Patients et methodes Le but de l’etude etait de mesurer la concentration de composes organiques volatils et de limonene dans l’air apres avoir pulverise un melange de 41 huiles essentielles. La quantification du limonene a ete appreciee suivant 3 procedures differentes. Dans la premiere, le contenu de limonene a ete mesure par pesage, sachant que le produit contient entre 4 et 5 % de limonene. Dans la deuxieme procedure, 2 series de 10 mesures de concentration de limonene dans l’air ont ete realisees par un appareil a photo-ionisation ppbRAE3000 ® Katrem ® (France) apres 4 pulverisations d’huiles essentielles dans une cabine de 9 m 3 . Au cours de la troisieme procedure, la concentration aerienne de limonene a ete mesuree par l’appareil de photo-ionisation et par spectrophotometrie apres prelevement sur des cartouches TENAX TA, apres 8 pulverisations dans une piece de 42 m 3 . Resultats La masse de limonene mesuree par pesage etait en moyenne de 57,7 mg (pour 4 pulverisations). Dans la cabine de 9 m 3 , la concentration moyenne maximale de limonene etait de 57,30 mg/m 3 . Dans la piece de 42 m 3 , la concentration moyenne de limonene etait respectivement de 15,0 mg/m 3 et 7,48 mg/m 3 sur 30 minutes et 3 heures par photo-ionisation. Ces donnees ont ete confirmees par spectrophotometrie (> 4,87 mg/m 3 de limonene et > 38,97 mg/m 3 de COV terpeniques). Conclusion Nous avons demontre dans 3 situations differentes que l’utilisation d’huiles essentielles par pulverisation entraine une augmentation aerienne des COV totaux et du limonene superieure aux normes. Aux vues des donnees de litterature, les concentrations elevees de COV totaux sont deleteres pour les asthmatiques. Par consequent, l’utilisation d’huiles essentielles sous forme de spray ne doit pas etre recommandee chez les patients asthmatiques.

Abstract: Context. Gaia data and stellar surveys open the way to the construction of detailed 3D maps of the Galactic interstellar (IS) dust based on the synthesis of star distances and extinctions. Dust maps are tools of broad use, also for Gaia-related Milky Way studies. Aims. Reliable extinction measurements require very accurate photometric calibrations. We show the first step of an iterative process linking 3D dust maps and photometric calibrations, and improving them simultaneously. Methods. Our previous 3D map of nearby IS dust was used to select low-reddening SDSS/APOGEE-DR14 red giants, and this database served for an empirical effective temperature- and metallicity-dependent photometric calibration in the Gaia G and 2MASS Ks bands. This calibration has been combined with Gaia G-band empirical extinction coefficients recently published, G, J, and Ks photometry and APOGEE atmospheric parameters to derive the extinction of a large fraction of the survey targets. Distances were estimated independently using isochrones and the magnitude-independent extinction KJ−Ks. This new dataset has been merged with the one used for the earlier version of dust map. A new Bayesian inversion of distance-extinction pairs has been performed to produce an updated 3D map. Results. We present several properties of the new map. A comparison with 2D dust emission reveals that all large dust shells seen in emission at middle and high latitudes are closer than 300 pc. The updated distribution constrains the well-debated, X-ray bright North Polar Spur to originate beyond 800 pc. We use the Orion region to illustrate additional details and distant clouds. On the large scale the map reveals a complex structure of the Local Arm. Chains of clouds of 2–3 kpc in length appear in planes tilted by ≃15° with respect to the Galactic plane. A series of cavities oriented along a l ≃ 60–240° axis crosses the Arm. Conclusions. The results illustrate the ongoing synergy between 3D mapping of IS dust and stellar calibrations in the context of Gaia. Dust maps provide prior foregrounds for future calibrations appropriate to different target characteristics or ranges of extinction, allowing us in turn to increase extinction data and produce more detailed and extended maps.

Abstract: The second Gaia data release (DR2), contains very precise astrometric and photometric properties for more than one billion sources, astrophysical parameters for dozens of millions, radial velocities for millions, variability information for half a million of stellar sources and orbits for thousands of solar system objects. Before the Catalogue publication, these data have undergone dedicated validation processes. The goal of this paper is to describe the validation results in terms of completeness, accuracy and precision of the various Gaia DR2 data. The validation processes include a systematic analysis of the Catalogue content to detect anomalies, either individual errors or statistical properties, using statistical analysis, and comparisons to external data or to models. Although the astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic data are of unprecedented quality and quantity, it is shown that the data cannot be used without a dedicated attention to the limitations described here, in the Catalogue documentation and in accompanying papers. Abstract: The Gaia Data Release 2 contains the 1st release of radial velocities complementing the kinematic data of a sample of about 7 million relatively bright, late-type stars. Aims: This paper provides a detailed description of the Gaia spectroscopic data processing pipeline, and of the approach adopted to derive the radial velocities presented in DR2. Methods: The pipeline must perform four main tasks: (i) clean and reduce the spectra observed with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS); (ii) calibrate the RVS instrument, including wavelength, straylight, line-spread function, bias non-uniformity, and photometric zeropoint; (iii) extract the radial velocities; and (iv) verify the accuracy and precision of the results. The radial velocity of a star is obtained through a fit of the RVS spectrum relative to an appropriate synthetic template spectrum. An additional task of the spectroscopic pipeline was to provide 1st-order estimates of the stellar atmospheric parameters required to select such template spectra. We describe the pipeline features and present the detailed calibration algorithms and software solutions we used to produce the radial velocities published in DR2. Results: The spectroscopic processing pipeline produced median radial velocities for Gaia stars with narrow-band near-IR magnitude Grvs < 12 (i.e. brighter than V~13). Stars identified as double-lined spectroscopic binaries were removed from the pipeline, while variable stars, single-lined, and non-detected double-lined spectroscopic binaries were treated as single stars. The scatter in radial velocity among different observations of a same star, also published in DR2, provides information about radial velocity variability. For the hottest (Teff > 7000 K) and coolest (Teff < 3500 K) stars, the accuracy and precision of the stellar parameter estimates are not sufficient to allow selection of appropriate templates. Abstract: Before the publication of the Gaia Catalogue, the contents of the first data release have undergone multiple dedicated validation tests. These tests aim at analysing in-depth the Catalogue content to detect anomalies, individual problems in specific objects or in overall statistical properties, either to filter them before the public release, or to describe the different caveats of the release for an optimal exploitation of the data. Dedicated methods using either Gaia internal data, external catalogues or models have been developed for the validation processes. They are testing normal stars as well as various populations like open or globular clusters, double stars, variable stars, quasars. Properties of coverage, accuracy and precision of the data are provided by the numerous tests presented here and jointly analysed to assess the data release content. This independent validation confirms the quality of the published data, Gaia DR1 being the most precise all-sky astrometric and photometric catalogue to-date. However, several limitations in terms of completeness, astrometric and photometric quality are identified and described. Figures describing the relevant properties of the release are shown and the testing activities carried out validating the user interfaces are also described. Abstract: In preparation for future, large-scale, multi-object, high-resolution spectroscopic surveys of the Galaxy, we present a series of tests of the precision in radial velocity and chemical abundances that any such project can achieve at a 4m class telescope. We briefly discuss a number of science cases that aim at studying the chemo-dynamical history of the major Galactic components (bulge, thin and thick disks, and halo) - either as a follow-up to the Gaia mission or on their own merits. Based on a large grid of synthetic spectra that cover the full range in stellar parameters of typical survey targets, we devise an optimal wavelength range and argue for a moderately high-resolution spectrograph. As a result, the kinematic precision is not limited by any of these factors, but will practically only suffer from systematic effects, easily reaching uncertainties

Abstract: The Gaia Data Release 2 provides a parallax of 0.734+/-0.073 mas for SDSS J102915+172927, currently the most metal-poor known object. This parallax implies that it is dwarf star, ruling out the scenario that it is a subgiant. The subgiant scenario had as a corollary that the star had been formed in a medium highly enriched in C, thus making line cooling efficient during the collapse, that was also highly enriched in Fe by Type Ia SNe. This scenario can also now be ruled out for this star, reinforcing the need of dust cooling and fragmentation to explain its formation.

Abstract: Preparation of molybdenyl and vanadyl acidic salts of [PMo 12 O 40 ] 3− has been achieved by cationic exchange between solid heteropolyacid and acetylacetonate complexes in toluene. Ammonium vanadyl salts were prepared by solid-state reaction between acidic vanadyl salts and urea at 250 °C. Importance of hydration state or exposure to water vapor on the preparation and structure of acidic vanadyl salts was revealed. Solid solution of acidic vanadyl salts with cubic Fd 3 ¯ m lattice can be obtained. Exposure of ammonium vanadyl salts to water vapor gives rise to a rebuilding of at least the surface of the particles leading to segregation into a pure ammonium Pn 3 ¯ m phase and a pure highly hydrated vanadyl Fd 3 ¯ m phase. Catalytic behavior of bulk solids for oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid at 320 °C was determined in presence of water. For ammonium vanadyl salts, the yield in methacrylic acid increases as the proportion of vanadyl phase increases until 0.75 VO 2+ per polyanion and then a plateau is reached. This observation is consistent with the characterizations suggesting that these salts are composed of a core of ammonium salt embedded in hydrated vanadyl salt. Presence of molybdenyl in cationic position neither allows an increase of the catalytic performances nor stabilizes the catalysts.

Abstract: As visualized by light and electron microscopic immunocytochemistry, the distribution of the neuronal serotonin-2A (5-HT(2A)) receptor is mainly intracellular throughout adult rat brain. This localization is particularly striking in the pyramidal cells of cerebral cortex, the dendrites of which are intensely immunoreactive, but without any labeling of their spines. In view of recent yeast two-hybrid and biochemical results suggesting an association of 5-HT(2A) receptors with the cytoskeletal microtubule-associated protein MAP1A, the respective subcellular distributions of the receptors and of MAP1A were compared by quantitative electron microscopic immunocytochemistry in dendrites of adult rat frontoparietal cortex. Counts of silver-intensified immunogold particles revealed a higher density of 5-HT(2A) receptors in smaller rather than larger dendrites, and an apportionment between pre-defined compartments representing the plasma membrane and the cytoplasm that was proportional to the relative surface area of these compartments. MAP1A immunoreactivity also predominated in smaller versus larger dendrites, but with a slightly lower proportion of labeling in the plasma membrane versus cytoplasmic compartment. The co-localization of 5-HT(2A) receptors and MAP1A protein in the same dendrites could be demonstrated in double immunolabeling experiments. These results confirmed the predominantly somato-dendritic, intracellular localization of 5-HT(2A) receptors in cerebral cortex, showed their higher concentration in distal as opposed to proximal dendrites, and suggested their potential association to the cytoskeleton in cortical neurons in vivo. Such a distribution of 5-HT(2A) receptors reinforces our earlier hypothesis that 5-HT(2A) receptors participate in intraneuronal signaling processes involving the cytoskeleton, and raises the possibility that their activation could be dependent upon that of another co-localized, plasma membrane-bound, 5-HT receptor.

Abstract: Resume Le but de cette etude est d'evaluer l'influence de l'infection par le virus de l'immunodeficience humaine (VIH) sur la reponse au traitement par interferon (IFN) de l'hepatite chronique C. Deux groupes ont ete constitues; le groupe A, comprenant 7 patients coinfectes par le virus de l'hepatite C (VHC) et le VIH, le groupe B comprenant 8 patients infectes par le VHC seul. Le taux moyen de CD4 des patients infectes par le VIH etait de 433/mm 3 (44-1073). Les patients ont ete compares selon des criteres biochimiques (ALAT), histologiques et virologiques (VHC RNA). L'interferon a ete administre a la dose de 3 MU 3 fois par semaine pendant 6 mois. Une reponse complete (normalisation des ALAT au moins 2 mois apres la fin du traitement) a ete observee chez 5 patients dans le groupe A et 1 dans le groupe B. Une reponse partielle (diminution du taux de transaminases d'un facteur 2,5 au moins pendant le traitement, suivie de valeurs anormales apres le traitement) a ete constatee chez 1 patient dans le groupe A et 5 dans le groupe B. Une absence de reponse a ete notee chez 1 patient dans le groupe A et 2 patients dans le groupe B. Une negativation de la PCR (VHC RNA) a ete observee chez 1 patient dans le groupe A et chez 5 patients dans le groupe A. Une positivite persistante (pendant et au moins 2 mois apres le traitement) a ete observee chez 5 patients dans le groupe A et chez 1 patient dans le groupe B. Enfin une negativation transitoire a ete constatee chez 1 patient dans le groupe A et chez 2 patients dans le groupe B. Dans cette etude restreinte, l'interferon α au dosage de 3 MU trois fois par semaine semble etre moins efficace dans le traitement de l'hepatite chronique C chez les patients infectes par le VIH par rapport aux sujets non infectes par le VIH. Des etudes complementaires sont necessaires pour determiner la strategie therapeutique optimale de l'hepatite chronique C chez les patients infectes par le VIH, en tenant compte des caracteristiques de l'infection a VHC (anciennete, genotype, severite histologique) et de l'infection a VIH (profil evolutif, alteration immunitaire, therapeutique antiretrovirale).

Abstract: 4MOST is a phase A study of a very high-multiplex, wide-field fibre-fed spectrograph system for the VISTA or NTT telescope. The main stellar goal of the instrument is to complement and complete the informations on the Milky Way, that Gaia will provide both on radial velocity and chemical analysis. Two resolution modes (about 5000 and 20000) are foreseen to operate at the same time. We have developed a simulator of spectral data for the 4MOST spectrograph. This simulator produces mock scientic spectra to be analyzed by the science team in order to constrain the feasibility of their requirements and help refine the high-level specications of the instrument. We present here the spectra simulator and how some of the simulation results are used to define the performances of 4MOST.

Abstract: International audience; Modelling the cheese ripening process continues to remain a challenge because this process is a complex system. There is still lack of knowledge to understand the interactions taking place at different level of scale during the process. However, knowledge may be gathered from scientific and operational experts' skills. Integrating this knowledge with knowledge extracted from experimental databases may allow a better understanding of the whole ripening process. This study presents an approach adapted from cognitive science to elicit and formalise experts' knowledge about the camembert-type cheese ripening process. Next, the collected data were unified in a mathematical model based on a dynamic Bayesian network. This formalism makes it possible to integrate this heterogeneous data. Abstract: To understand the roles of various microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) in the development of axons and dendrites, we have expressed individual neuronal MAPs in normally rounded Sf9 host cells. We previously reported that expression of tau protein in these cells results in the elaboration of long processes containing dense bundles of microtubules (MTs). These bundles generally terminate in the hillock region of the cell body, and almost all of the MTs within the bundles are oriented with their plus ends distal to the cell body. Here we report the expression of a construct that approximates the MAP2C sequence and also induces the elaboration of processes with dense bundles of predominantly plus-end-distal MTs. Whereas tau generally results in a single process, there is a significantly greater tendency for the MAP2C-like construct to induce multiple processes. In contrast to the tau processes, the MT bundle in these processes extends far into the cell body. This latter observation suggests that MAP2C and tau have different effects on MT assembly and/or transport events in the cell. Although both of these MAPs can organize MTs that are competent to participate in process formation, the detailed organization of MTs induced by each of the two constructs is distinctive, and these differences may be relevant to axonal and dendritic differentiation.

45. Chapter 2.4 Atmo-rhenA: a common air quality modelling system in the Upper Rhine Valley

Abstract: The ASPA is in charge of regional air quality assessment and forecast (measurements and modelling), emission inventory realisation and gridding, and population information. In the frame of the European INTERREG III program, it is working together with the networks of Baden Wurttemberg (Landesanstalt fur Umwelt, Messungen und Naturschutz Baden-Wurttemberg, LUBW) and Basel (Lufthygieneamt beider Basel, LHA) towards a “common air quality assessment and information system in the Upper Rhine Valley”. The current and last step of the project is the set up of a common regional air quality modelling platform (simulation and forecast), which completes the bilingual website presenting daily measurements of the networks. The Atmo-rhenA platform is based on the CHIMERE (Institut Pierre Simon Laplace, IPSL, http://euler.lmd.polytechnique.fr/chimere ) chemistry-transport model (CTM) and the MM5 meteorological model (National Centre for Atmospheric Research, NCAR). It is fed up with a detailed transboundary inventory update on the domain, integrating a speciation of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) (Sambat et al., 2004) and particulate matter (PM) (Pregger et al., 2004) worked out by IER (Institut fur Energiewirtschaft und Rationelle Energieanwendung) and CITEPA (Centre Interprofessionnel Technique d’Etudes de la Pollution Atmospherique). Daily forecasts for the Upper Rhine Valley are operational since the beginning of 2005 and will be soon available on Internet. Indicators on the forecasting performances of the platform are calculated thanks to comparison with the routine measurements. Further, Atmo-rhenA allows the study of ozone production in the Upper Rhine Valley and the simulation of the impact of emission reduction scenarios on ozone peaks. For instance it has been used to assess the impact of a local short-term scenario (application of emergency measures) and of European long-term scenarios from the European Clean Air For Europe (CAFE) programme, both applied on the transboundary emission cadaster.

Abstract: Alterations of the axonal transport and microtubule network are potential causes of motor neurodegeneration in mice expressing a mutant form of the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1G37R) linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the present study, we investigated the biology of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs), responsible for the formation and stabilization of microtubules, in SOD1G37R mice. Our results show that the protein levels of MAP2, MAP1A, tau 100 kDa and tau 68 kDa species decrease significantly as early as 5 months before onset of symptoms in the spinal cord of SOD1G37R mice, whereas decrease in levels of tau 52-55 kDa species is most often noted with the manifestation of the clinical symptoms. Interestingly, there was no change in the protein levels of MAPs in the brain of SOD1G37R mice, a CNS organ spared by the mutant SOD1 toxicity. Remarkably, as early as 5 months before disease onset, the binding affinities of MAP1A, MAP2 and tau isoforms to the cytoskeleton decreased in spinal cord of SOD1G37R mice. This change correlated with a hyperphosphorylation of the soluble tau 52-55 kDa species at epitopes recognized by the antibodies AT8 and PHF-1. Finally, a shift in the distribution of MAP2 from the cytosol to the membrane is detected in SOD1G37R mice at the same stage. Thus, alterations in the integrity of microtubules are early events of the neurodegenerative processes in SOD1G37R mice.

47. Prevention of mutant SOD1 motoneuron degeneration by copper chelators in vitro

Abstract: An animal model of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS) has been generated by overexpression of human CuZn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) containing a substitution of glycine to alanine at position 93 in transgenic G93A mice. The loss of motoneurons shown in this model has been attributed to a dominant gain of function of this mutated enzyme, which might be due to copper toxicity. This hypothesis was tested in purified spinal motoneurons cultures originating from G93A transgenic embryos. Spinal motoneurons were isolated from E13 embryos by several steps including density gradient centrifugation. The effect of copper chelators on survival and neurite growth of motoneurons was investigated. Survival of G93A motoneurons was decreased by 46% as compared to wild-type motoneurons. Moreover, G93A motoneurons showed reduced neurite outgrowth. Copper chelators strikingly increased viability of G93A motoneurons (by over 200%) but had no effect on wild-type cells. Presence of DDC in the medium increases the length of neurites from G93A motoneurons. The present results suggest the capacity of copper chelators to reduce the effect of reverse function of mutated SOD1 on motoneurons.

48. beta-Actin is confined to structures having high capacity of remodelling in developing and adult rat cerebellum

Abstract: Neurons undergo complex morphological changes during differentiation and in cases of plasticity. A major determinant of cell morphology is the actin cytoskeleton, which in neurons is comprised of two actin isoforms, non-muscle gamma- and beta-actin. To better understand their respective roles during differentiation and plasticity, their cellular and subcellular localization was examined in developing and adult cerebellar cortex. It was observed that gamma-actin is expressed at a constant level throughout development, while the level of beta-actin expression rapidly decreases with age. At the light microscopic level, gamma-actin staining is ubiquitous and the only developmental change observed is a relative reduction of its concentration in cell bodies and white matter. In contrast, beta-actin staining almost completely disappears from the cytoplasm of cell bodies, primary dendrites and axons. In young cerebellar cultures, gamma-actin is found in the cell body, neurites and growth cones, while beta-actin is mainly found in growth cones, as previously reported in other primary neuronal culture systems [Kaech et al. (1997), J. Neuroscience, 17, 9565-9572; Bassell et al., (1998), J. Neuroscience, 18, 251-265]. Electron microscopy of post-embedding immunogold-labelled tissue confirms the widespread distribution of gamma-actin, and also reveals an increased concentration of gamma-actin in dendritic spines in the adult. During development, beta-actin accumulation is observed in actively growing structures, e.g., growth cones, filopodia, cell bodies and axonal tracts. In the adult cerebellar cortex, beta-actin is preferentially found in dendritic spines, structures which are known to retain their capacity for morphological modifications in the adult brain. This differential subcellular localization and developmental regulation of the two actin isoforms point to their different roles in neurons.

Abstract: The I kappaB alpha protein is a key molecular target involved in the control of NF-kappaB/Rel transcription factors during viral infection or inflammatory reactions. This NF-kappaB-inhibitory factor is regulated by posttranslational phosphorylation and ubiquitination of its amino-terminal signal response domain that targets I kappaB alpha for rapid proteolysis by the 26S proteasome. In an attempt to identify regulators of the I kappaB alpha inhibitory activity, we undertook a yeast two-hybrid genetic screen, using the amino-terminal end of I kappaB alpha as bait, and identified 12 independent interacting clones. Sequence analysis identified some of these cDNA clones as Dlc-1, a sequence encoding a small, 9-kDa human homolog of the outer-arm dynein light-chain protein. In the two-hybrid assay, Dlc-1 also interacted with full-length I kappaB alpha protein but not with N-terminal-deletion-containing versions of I kappaB alpha. I kappaB alpha interacted in vitro with a glutathione S-transferase-Dlc-1 fusion protein, and RelA(p65) did not displace this association, demonstrating that p65 and Dlc-1 contact different protein motifs of I kappaB alpha. Importantly, in HeLa and 293 cells, endogenous and transfected I kappaB alpha coimmunoprecipitated with Myc-tagged or endogenous Dlc-1. Indirect immunofluorescence analyzed by confocal microscopy indicated that Dlc-1 and I kappaB alpha colocalized with both nuclear and cytoplasmic distribution. Furthermore, Dlc-1 and I kappaB alpha were found to associate with the microtubule organizing center, a perinuclear region from which microtubules radiate. Likewise, I kappaB alpha colocalized with alpha-tubulin filaments. Taken together, these results highlight an intriguing interaction between the I kappaB alpha protein and the human homolog of a member of the dynein family of motor proteins and provide a potential link between cytoskeleton dynamics and gene regulation.
