Abstract: Abstract A significant challenge in measurements of neutrino oscillations is reconstructing the incoming neutrino energies. While modern fully-active tracking calorimeters such as liquid argon time projection chambers in principle allow the measurement of all final state particles above some detection threshold, undetected neutrons remain a considerable source of missing energy with little to no data constraining their production rates and kinematics. We present the first demonstration of tagging neutrino-induced neutrons in liquid argon time projection chambers using secondary protons emitted from neutron-argon interactions in the MicroBooNE detector. We describe the method developed to identify neutrino-induced neutrons and demonstrate its performance using neutrons produced in muon-neutrino charged current interactions. The method is validated using a small subset of MicroBooNE’s total dataset. The selection yields a sample with $$60\%$$ 60 % of selected tracks corresponding to neutron-induced secondary protons. At this purity, the integrated efficiency is 8.4% for neutrons that produce a detectable proton.

Abstract: The origin of high-energy galactic cosmic rays is yet to be understood, but some galactic cosmic-ray accelerators can accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma-rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multimessenger analysis that combines gamma-rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 yr of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that, for five of the sources, the gamma-ray emission observed by HAWC cannot be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma-rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multimessenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established, which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and 10 yr of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach, which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses, and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are ∼3% and ∼9% for the time-averaged and time-dependent cases, respectively.

Abstract: Neutrino flares in the sky are searched for in data collected by IceCube between 2011 and 2021 May. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube’s previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data set is statistically independent of the track data sets, and while inferior in angular resolution, the low-background nature makes it competitive and complementary to previous searches. No statistically significant flare of neutrino emission was observed in an all-sky scan. Upper limits are calculated on neutrino flares of varying duration from 1 hr to 100 days. Furthermore, constraints on the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux are presented, showing that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for 10–1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p -value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p -value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at tera electronvolt to peta electronvolt energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract: IceCube alert events are neutrinos with a moderate-to-high probability of having astrophysical origin. In this study, we analyze 11 yr of IceCube data and investigate 122 alert events and a selection of high-energy tracks detected between 2009 and the end of 2021. This high-energy event selection (alert events + high-energy tracks) has an average probability of ≥0.5 of being of astrophysical origin. We search for additional continuous and transient neutrino emission within the high-energy events’ error regions. We find no evidence for significant continuous neutrino emission from any of the alert event directions. The only locally significant neutrino emission is the transient emission associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056, with a local significance of 3 σ , which confirms previous IceCube studies. When correcting for 122 test positions, the global p -value is 0.156 and compatible with the background hypothesis. We constrain the total continuous flux emitted from all 122 test positions at 100 TeV to be below 1.2 × 10 ^−15 (TeV cm ^2 s) ^−1 at 90% confidence assuming an E ^−2 spectrum. This corresponds to 4.5% of IceCube’s astrophysical diffuse flux. Overall, we find no indication that alert events in general are linked to lower-energetic continuous or transient neutrino emission.

Abstract: Abstract Primary challenges for current and future precision neutrino experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) include understanding detector effects and quantifying the associated systematic uncertainties. This paper presents a novel technique for assessing and propagating LArTPC detector-related systematic uncertainties. The technique makes modifications to simulation waveforms based on a parameterization of observed differences in ionization signals from the TPC between data and simulation, while remaining insensitive to the details of the detector model. The modifications are then used to quantify the systematic differences in low- and high-level reconstructed quantities. This approach could be applied to future LArTPC detectors, such as those used in SBN and DUNE.

Abstract: Abstract The MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located at Fermilab is a neutrino experiment dedicated to the study of short-baseline oscillations, the measurements of neutrino cross sections in liquid argon, and to the research and development of this novel detector technology. Accurate and precise measurements of calorimetry are essential to the event reconstruction and are achieved by leveraging the TPC to measure deposited energy per unit length along the particle trajectory, with mm resolution. We describe the non-uniform calorimetric reconstruction performance in the detector, showing dependence on the angle of the particle trajectory. Such non-uniform reconstruction directly affects the performance of the particle identification algorithms which infer particle type from calorimetric measurements. This work presents a new particle identification method which accounts for and effectively addresses such non-uniformity. The newly developed method shows improved performance compared to previous algorithms, illustrated by a 93.7% proton selection efficiency and a 10% muon mis-identification rate, with a fairly loose selection of tracks performed on beam data. The performance is further demonstrated by identifying exclusive final states in ν μ CC interactions. While developed using MicroBooNE data and simulation, this method is easily applicable to future LArTPC experiments, such as SBND, ICARUS, and DUNE.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Variation in Lamin A/C results in a spectrum of clinical disease, including arrhythmias and cardiomyopathy. Benign variation is rare, and classification of LMNA missense variants via in silico prediction tools results in a high rate of variants of uncertain significance (VUS). OBJECTIVE: Use a machine learning (ML) approach for in silico prediction of LMNA pathogenic variation. METHODS: Genetic sequencing was performed on family members with conduction system disease and patient cell lines examined for LMNA expression. In silico predictions of conservation and pathogenicity of published LMNA variants were visualized with Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP). K-means clustering was used to identify variant groups with similarly projected scores, allowing the generation of statistically supported risk categories. RESULTS: We discovered a novel LMNA variant (c.408C>A:p.Asp136Glu) segregating with conduction system disease in a multi-generation pedigree, which was reported as a VUS by a commercial testing company. Additional familial analysis and in vitro testing found it to be pathogenic, which prompted the development of a ML algorithm that used in silico predictions of pathogenicity for known LMNA missense variants. This identified three clusters of variation, each with a significantly different incidence of known pathogenic variants (38.8%, 15.0%, and 6.1%). 339/415 (81.7%) head/rod domain variants, including p.Asp136Glu, were in clusters with highest proportions of pathogenic variants. CONCLUSION: An unsupervised ML method successfully identified clusters enriched for pathogenic LMNA variants including a novel variant associated with conduction system disease. Our ML method may assist in identifying high risk VUS when familial testing is unavailable.

13. Optimized design of flux chambers for online measurements of NH3 emission after field application of slurry with full-scale farm machinery

Abstract: Liquid animal manure (slurry) can be utilized as a valuable nutrient source for crop production but is also a significant source of ammonia (NH3) emissions, which negatively affect the environment and human health.Emission depends on several factors, including application technique, climatic conditions, and slurry and soil properties. Despite increased knowledge there are still important effects and interactions that are not quantitatively understood. Reliable emission measurements and assessment of new low-emission application technologies are needed for emission inventories and research aimed at reducing emission.Different methods can be used to measure NH3 emission after field application of slurry and can roughly be sorted into two categories: micrometeorological and enclosure methods. Micrometeorological methods yield accurate flux measurements and slurry can be applied by full-scale farm machinery, but replication is impractical and usually omitted, making statistical comparisons difficult. In contrast enclosure methods, such as dynamic chambers, only require a small plot area, making replication possible. However, most dynamic chamber designs can only be used with manual application of the slurry, which is not always representative of application of full-scale machinery, especially when there is an interaction between the slurry application aggregate and the soil. A new design of dynamic chambers enabling application of slurry both manually and by full-scale farm machinery has been developed. The dynamic chambers are connected to a cavity ring-down spectrometer for online measurements of NH3, allowing for high time-resolution measurements with a low detection limit, high recovery, and relatively low variation among chambers.Several configurations of the design were investigated in silico with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) in order to optimize airflow through the chamber and the configuration to ensure turbulence homogeneity of the emitting surface and sufficient mixing of the air within the chamber.The new dynamic chambers were tested in three field trials where a different method of applying the slurry was used in each trial: manual application, application with a field trial system with 3-m slurry boom, and application by a 30-m farm-scale slurry boom. Statistical power analysis was performed to estimate the number of replicates required for detecting several effect sizes for each application method. Furthermore, the flux measurements from the new chambers will be compared with wind tunnel measurements (manual application) and the backward Lagrangian Stochastic (bLS) dispersion technique (3-m and 30-m boom application).This new design allows for representative measurements of NH3 flux after application of slurry in the field, making it possible to statistically assess the effect of individual variables affecting flux dynamics and thereby further increase knowledge on NH3 emissions mitigation options.

Abstract: Background The objective of this international multicenter study was to investigate both early and late outcomes of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with a systemic right ventricle (SRV) and to identify predictors for congestive heart failure readmissions and mortality. Methods and Results This retrospective international multicenter study included 13 centers. The study population comprised 80 adult patients with SRV (48.9% women) with a mean age of 45±14 (range, 18–77) years at initiation of CRT. Median follow‐up time was 4.1 (25th–75th percentile, 1.3–8.3) years. Underlying congenital heart disease consisted of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries and dextro‐transposition of the great arteries in 63 (78.8%) and 17 (21.3%) patients, respectively. CRT resulted in significant improvement in functional class (before CRT: III, 25th–75th percentile, II–III; after CRT: II, 25th–75th percentile, II–III; P =0.005) and QRS duration (before CRT: 176±27; after CRT: 150±24 milliseconds; P =0.003) in patients with pre‐CRT ventricular pacing who underwent an upgrade to a CRT device (n=49). These improvements persisted during long‐term follow‐up with a marginal but significant increase in SRV function (before CRT; 30%, 25th–75th percentile, 25–35; after CRT: 31%, 25th–75th percentile, 21–38; P =0.049). In contrast, no beneficial change in the above‐mentioned variables was observed in patients who underwent de novo CRT (n=31). A quarter of all patients were readmitted for heart failure during follow‐up, and mortality at latest follow‐up was 21.3%. Conclusions This international experience with CRT in patients with an SRV demonstrated that CRT in selected patients with SRV dysfunction and pacing‐induced dyssynchrony yielded consistent improvement in QRS duration and New York Heart Association functional status, with a marginal increase in SRV function.

Abstract: We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩ GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE’s first three years of operations (6.80×1020 protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π0 events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world’s best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract: We present a measurement of νe interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Abstract: Leadless cardiac pacing has not been widely utilized in pediatric patients, in part due to concerns regarding size of the delivery sheath and the potential for vascular injury.We present a case of leadless pacemaker implantation via internal jugular vein without a surgical cutdown.A leadless pacemaker was successfully implanted in the right ventricle via internal jugular approach in a pediatric patient with congenital heart disease.This is a novel approach to leadless pacemaker implantation that could broaden the utilization of this technology to the vulnerable population of children, especially those with congenital heart disease.

Abstract: Wire-Cell is a 3D event reconstruction package for liquid argon time projection chambers. Through geometry, time, and drifted charge from multiple readout wire planes, 3D space points with associated charge are reconstructed prior to the pattern recognition stage. Pattern recognition techniques, including track trajectory and dQ/dx (ionization charge per unit length) fitting, 3D neutrino vertex fitting, track and shower separation, particle-level clustering, and particle identification are then applied on these 3D space points as well as the original 2D projection measurements. A deep neural network is developed to enhance the reconstruction of the neutrino interaction vertex. Compared to traditional algorithms, the deep neural network boosts the vertex efficiency by a relative 30% for charged-current νe interactions. This pattern recognition achieves 80–90% reconstruction efficiencies for primary leptons, after a 65.8% (72.9%) vertex efficiency for charged-current νe (νμ) interactions. Based on the resulting reconstructed particles and their kinematics, we also achieve 15-20% energy reconstruction resolutions for charged-current neutrino interactions.

19. Catheter Ablation of Atrial Arrhythmias in Patients Post-Fontan

Abstract: Atrial arrhythmias are highly prevalent in the aging Fontan population and contribute importantly to morbidity and mortality. Although the most common arrhythmia is scar-based intra-atrial re-entrant tachycardia, various other arrhythmias may occur, including focal atrial tachycardia, atrioventricular node-dependent tachycardias, and atrial fibrillation. The type and prevalence of atrial arrhythmia is determined, in part, by the underlying congenital defect and variant of Fontan surgery. Although the cumulative incidence of atrial tachyarrhythmias has decreased substantially from the atriopulmonary anastomosis to the more recent total cavopulmonary-connection Fontan, the burden of atrial arrhythmias remains substantial. Management is often multifaceted and can include anticoagulation, anti-arrhythmic drug therapy, pacing, and cardioversion. Catheter ablation plays a key role in control of arrhythmia. Risks and benefits must be carefully weighed. Among the important considerations are the clinical burden of arrhythmia, ventricular function, hemodynamic stability in tachycardia, suspected arrhythmia mechanisms, risks associated with anaesthesia, venous access, approaches to reaching the pulmonary venous atrium, and accompanying comorbidities. Careful review of surgical notes, electrocardiographic tracings, and advanced imaging is paramount, with particular attention to anatomic abnormalities such as venous obstructions and displaced conduction systems. Despite numerous challenges, ablation of atrial arrhythmias is effective in improving clinical status. Nevertheless, onset of new arrhythmias is common during long-term follow-up. Advanced technologies, such as high-density mapping catheters and remote magnetic guided ablation, carry the potential to further improve outcomes. Fontan patients with atrial arrhythmias should be referred to centres with dedicated expertise in congenital heart disease including catheter ablation, anaesthesia support, and advanced imaging.

20. Explaining the MiniBooNE excess through a mixed model of neutrino oscillation and decay

Abstract: The electronlike excess observed by the MiniBooNE experiment is explained with a model comprising a new low mass state (O(1) eV) participating in neutrino oscillations and a new high mass state (O(100) MeV) that decays to ν+γ. Short-baseline oscillation datasets are used to predict the oscillation parameters. Fitting the MiniBooNE energy and scattering angle data, there is a narrow joint allowed region for the decay contribution at 95% CL. The result is a substantial improvement over the single sterile neutrino oscillation model, with Δχ2/dof=19.3/2 for a decay coupling of 2.8×10−7 GeV−1, high mass state of 376 MeV, oscillation mixing angle of 7×10−4 and mass splitting of 1.3 eV2. This model predicts that no clear oscillation signature will be observed in the FNAL short baseline program due to the low signal-level.

Abstract: This article presents the reconstruction of the electromagnetic activity from electrons and photons (showers) used in the MicroBooNE deep learning-based low energy electron search. The reconstruction algorithm uses a combination of traditional and deep learning-based techniques to estimate shower energies. We validate these predictions using two $\nu_{\mu}$-sourced data samples: charged/neutral current interactions with final state neutral pions and charged current interactions in which the muon stops and decays within the detector producing a Michel electron. Both the neutral pion sample and Michel electron sample demonstrate agreement between data and simulation. Further, the absolute shower energy scale is shown to be consistent with the relevant physical constant of each sample: the neutral pion mass peak and the Michel energy cutoff., Comment: 27 pages; matches published version

We thank Brian Batell, Joshua Berger, and Ahmed Ismail for outlining the search strategy., We present a search for the decays of a neutral scalar boson produced by kaons decaying at rest, in the context of the Higgs portal model, using the MicroBooNE detector. We analyze data triggered in time with the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam spill, with an exposure of 1.93 x 10(20) protons on target. We look for monoenergetic scalars that come from the direction of the NuMI hadron absorber, at a distance of 100 m from the detector, and decay to electron-positron pairs. We observe one candidate event, with a standard model background prediction of 1.9 +/- 0.8. We set an upper limit on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle of theta < (3.3 - 4.6) x 10(-4) at the 95% confidence level for scalar boson masses in the range (100-200) MeV/c(2). We exclude, at the 95% confidence level, the remaining model parameters required to explain the central value of a possible excess of K-L(0) -> pi(0)nu(nu) over bar decays reported by the KOTO collaboration. Abstract: For a large liquid-argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) operating on or near the Earth's surface to detect neutrino interactions, the rejection of cosmogenic background is a critical and challenging task because of the large cosmic-ray flux and the long drift time of the time-projection chamber. We introduce a superior cosmic background rejection procedure based on the Wire-Cell three-dimensional (3D) event reconstruction for LArTPCs. From an initial 1:20 000 neutrino to cosmic-ray background ratio, we demonstrate these tools on data from the MicroBooNE experiment and create a high-performance generic neutrino event selection with a cosmic contamination of 14.9% (9.7%) for a visible energy region greater than O(200) MeV. The neutrino interaction selection efficiency is 80.4% and 87.6% for inclusive νμ charged-current and νe charged-current interactions, respectively. This significantly improved performance compared with existing reconstruction algorithms marks a major milestone toward reaching the scientific goals of LArTPC neutrino oscillation experiments operating near the Earth's surface.

Abstract: This manuscript describes the commissioning of the Mini-CAPTAIN liquid argon detector in a neutron beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), which led to a first measurement of high-energy neutron interactions in argon. The Mini-CAPTAIN detector consists of a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with an accompanying photomultiplier tube (PMT) array sealed inside a liquid-argon-filled cryostat. The liquid argon is constantly purified and recirculated in a closed-loop cycle during operation. Additional support for the laser calibration system and cosmic ray tagger was provided by the Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics, Bern, Switzerland., Accurate knowledge of electron transport properties is vital to understanding the information provided by liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). Ionization electron drift-lifetime, local electric field distortions caused by positive ion accumulation, and electron diffusion can all significantly impact the measured signal waveforms. This paper presents a measurement of the effective longitudinal electron diffusion coefficient, D-L, in MicroBooNE at the nominal electric field strength of 273.9 V/cm. Historically, this measurement has been made in LArTPC prototype detectors. This represents the first measurement in a large-scale (85 tonne active volume) LArTPC operating in a neutrino beam. This is the largest dataset ever used for this measurement. Abstract: Large liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs), especially those operating near the surface, are susceptible to space charge effects. In the context of LArTPCs, the space charge effect is the build-up of slow-moving positive ions in the detector primarily due to ionization from cosmic rays, leading to a distortion of the electric field within the detector. This effect leads to a displacement in the reconstructed position of signal ionization electrons in LArTPC detectors ("spatial distortions"), as well as to variations in the amount of electron-ion recombination experienced by ionization throughout the volume of the TPC. We present techniques that can be used to measure and correct for space charge effects in large LArTPCs by making use of cosmic muons, including the use of track pairs to unambiguously pin down spatial distortions in three dimensions. The performance of these calibration techniques are studied using both Monte Carlo simulation and MicroBooNE data, utilizing a UV laser system as a means to estimate the systematic bias associated with the calibration methodology., Comment: 38 pages, 25 figures

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of flux-integrated single differential cross sections for charged-current (CC) muon neutrino (ν_{μ}) scattering on argon with a muon and a proton in the final state, ^{40}Ar (ν_{μ},μp)X. The measurement was carried out using the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector with an exposure of 4.59×10^{19} protons on target. Events are selected to enhance the contribution of CC quasielastic (CCQE) interactions. The data are reported in terms of a total cross section as well as single differential cross sections in final state muon and proton kinematics. We measure the integrated per-nucleus CCQE-like cross section (i.e., for interactions leading to a muon, one proton, and no pions above detection threshold) of (4.93±0.76_{stat}±1.29_{sys})×10^{-38} cm^{2}, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The single differential cross sections are also in overall good agreement with theoretical predictions, except at very forward muon scattering angles that correspond to low-momentum-transfer events.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the neutron cross section on argon in the energy range of 100-800 MeV. The measurement was obtained with a 4.3-hour exposure of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector to the WNR/LANSCE beam at LANL. The total cross section is measured from the attenuation coefficient of the neutron flux as it traverses the liquid argon volume. A set of 2,631 candidate interactions is divided in bins of the neutron kinetic energy calculated from time-of-flight measurements. These interactions are reconstructed with custom-made algorithms specifically designed for the data in a time projection chamber the size of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector. The energy averaged cross section is $0.91 \pm{} 0.10~\mathrm{(stat.)} \pm{} 0.09~\mathrm{(sys.)}~\mathrm{barns}$. Abstract: The MicroBooNE continuous readout stream is a parallel readout of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) which enables detection of non-beam events such as those from a supernova neutrino burst. The low energies of the supernova neutrinos and the intense cosmic-ray background flux due to the near-surface detector location makes triggering on these events very challenging. Instead, MicroBooNE relies on a delayed trigger generated by SNEWS (the Supernova Early Warning System) for detecting supernova neutrinos. The continuous readout of the LArTPC generates large data volumes, and requires the use of real-time compression algorithms (zero suppression and Huffman compression) implemented in an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) in the readout electronics. We present the results of the optimization of the data reduction algorithms, and their operational performance. Abstract: Genotype imputation is a standard approach used in the field of genetics. It can be used to fill in missing genotypes or to increase genotype density. Accurate imputed genotypes are required for downstream analyses. In this study, the accuracy of whole-genome sequence imputation for Angus beef cattle was examined using two different ways to form the reference panel, a within-breed reference population and a multi breed reference population. A stepwise imputation was conducted by imputing medium-density (50k) genotypes to high-density, and then to the whole genome sequence (WGS). The reference population consisted of animals with WGS information from the 1 000 Bull Genomes project. The within-breed reference panel comprised 396 Angus cattle, while an additional 2 380 Taurine cattle were added to the reference population for the multi breed reference scenario. Imputation accuracies were variant-wise average accuracies from a 10-fold cross-validation and expressed as concordance rates (CR) and Pearson’s correlations (PR). The two imputation scenarios achieved moderate to high imputation accuracies ranging from 0.896 to 0.966 for CR and from 0.779 to 0.834 for PR. The accuracies from two different scenarios were similar, except for PR from WGS imputation, where the within-breed scenario outperformed the multi breed scenario. The result indicated that including a large number of animals from other breeds in the reference panel to impute purebred Angus did not improve the accuracy and may negatively impact the results. In conclusion, the imputed WGS in Angus cattle can be obtained with high accuracy using a within-breed reference panel.

Abstract: The Microhexcavity Panel ( muHex) is a novel gaseous micropattern particle detector comprised of a dense array of close-packed hexagonal pixels, each operating as an independent detection unit for ionizing radiation. It is a second generation detector derived from plasma panel detectors and microcavity detectors. The muHex is under development to be deployed as a scalable, fast timing (ns) and hermetically sealed gaseous tracking detector with high rate ( > 100 KHz/cm^2 ) capability. The devices reported here were fabricated as 16 x 16 pixel arrays of 2 mm edge-to-edge, 1 mm deep hexagonal cells embedded in a thin, 1.4 mm glass-ceramic wafer. Cell walls are metalized cathodes, connected to high voltage bus lines through conductive vias. Anodes are small, 457 micron diameter metal discs screen printed on the upper substrate. The detectors are filled with an operating gas to near 1 atm and then closed with a shut-off valve. They have been operated in both avalanche mode and gas discharge devices, producing mV to volt level signals with about 1 to 3 ns rise times. Operation in discharge mode is enabled by high impedance quench resistors on the high voltage bus at each pixel site. Results indicate that each individual pixel behaves as an isolated detection unit with high single pixel intrinsic efficiency to both beta's from radioactive sources and to cosmic ray muons. Continuous avalanche mode operation over several days at hit rates over 300 KHz/cm^2 with no gas flow have been observed. Abstract: Emission of ammonia (NH3) is a ubiquitous problem due to the adverse effects of NH3 on the environment and human health. The agricultural sector accounts for nearly all NH3 emissions in Europe. Hence, technologies for the abatement of NH3 emissions from this sector have been in strong demand in recent years. In order to document emissions and evaluate abatement technologies, there is a strong need for reliable NH3 measurement methods. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is often used to measure NH3 concentrations, but recent research shows interference from compounds typically present in livestock production and during agricultural activities. In this work, the performance of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) from Picarro, as an alternative to PAS, has been tested with respect to method validation under laboratory and field conditions. Potential interferences of 10 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on CRDS NH3 measurement were tested with simultaneous VOC analysis performed by proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). Both laboratory and field calibrations show excellent linearity over a large dynamic range of NH3 concentrations. The analyzer shows a small humidity effect of up to a few ppb in the extreme case of a nearly water-saturated air stream. Apart from the negligible humidity dependency, no interferences of the tested VOCs were observed. Overall, the CRDS system performs satisfactory and is well suited for measurements of NH3 emissions from livestock production.

Abstract: The influence of hot deformation on the evolution of size, shape, and fraction of dispersoids has been studied in a simple 3xxx aluminium alloy by means of hot torsion testing. It has been shown that at high strain rates, deformation leads to spheroidization of the dispersoids, an increase in number density, and an increase in volume fraction. The increase in number density and volume fraction are associated with precipitation of new particles. The enhancement of manganese diffusion is a key factor in promoting rapid dispersoid evolution during deformation. A model has been developed to estimate the effect of deformation induced vacancies and dislocations on diffusion. This predicts that an order of magnitude increase in diffusion coefficient between may occur under typical hot deformation conditions, consistent with the rapid microstructural changes measured experimentally.

Abstract: The development of both dispersoid and constituent particle types during high temperature deformation has been investigated. Using torsion testing, which enables good temperature and strain rate control, the development of particles in terms of individual properties and the overall population has been examined during extended high strain rate deformation. Torsion tests also allow material that has the same thermal history but different levels of strain within a single sample to be compared. Quantitative comparison of particles has been performed using high resolution SEM imaging. Strain has been shown to have an important influence on particle evolution, beyond changing the kinetics of particle evolution alone. It has been demonstrated that the shape of the dispersoids is altered when they are evolving under the action of strain compared to that obtained from a thermal effect.

Abstract: Second phase particles in wrought aluminium alloys are crucial in controlling recrystallization and texture. In Al-Mn-Fe-Si (3xxx) alloys, the size, spacing, and distribution of both large constituent particles and small dispersoids are manipulated by heat treatment to obtain the required final microstructure and texture for operations such as can-making. Understanding how these particles evolve as a function of process conditions is thus critical to optimize alloy performance. In this study, a novel 3-dimensional technique involving serial sectioning in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to analyse the intermetallic particles found in an as-cast and homogenized Al-Mn-Fe-Si alloy. This has allowed an accurate determination of the size and shape of the constituent particles and dispersoids derived from a 3-dimensional dataset. It is demonstrated that a proper consideration of the 3-dimensional microstructure reveals important features that are not obvious from 2-dimensional sections alone.

Abstract: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common genetic cardiovascular disease, with an annual risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) estimated at 1 %. Limited data are available regarding both the risk of SCD in the young HCM population and the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). This retrospective study included all patients with HCM who underwent ICD implantation for primary or secondary prevention of SCD before the age of 30 years at five institutions between 1995 and 2009. There were 99 devices implanted in 73 patients. Appropriate shocks occurred for 11 % of all the patients. None of the previously identified conventional risk factors for SCD in HCM patients were associated with increased risk of appropriate shocks in the young study cohort. During a median follow-up period of 2.4 years, inappropriate shocks occurred for 22 % of the patients. Older age at implant was associated with a decreased risk of inappropriate shock. Those who underwent implantation in the earlier decade had a higher incidence of inappropriate shocks. Late complications including lead fracture or dislodgement, generator malfunction, and infection occurred for 32 % of the patients. Three patients died (4 %), one of whom had an arrhythmic sudden death. A greater proportion of primary prevention implantations was performed for patients from the latter decade. Over time, ICD use in young HCM patients has become increasingly primary prevention oriented. Shock rates mirror those reported in adult series, and there is a substantial incidence of device complications.

Abstract: Objective: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the leading causes of death; however, updated data regarding clinical presentation and current management are missing in Greece. This study aimed to prospectively record the demographic and clinical characteristics of a representative sample of patients suffering from AMI, their management, and short-term outcomes. Methods: ILIAKTIS is a national, prospective, multicenter, noninterventional study conducted under the auspices of Hellenic Society of Cardiology (HCS) and the European Initiative Stent - Save a Life. From 1st April 2020 to 30th June 2020, consecutive adult patients with STEMI or NSTEMI were enrolled in the 50 participating hospitals, appropriately selected to match the geographical and population distribution in the Greek territory. Abstract: Abstract To evaluate the suitability of volume index measurement (VI) by either ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT) for the assessment of liver volume. Fifty-nine patients, 21 women, with a mean age of 66.8 ± 12.6 years underwent US of the liver followed immediately by abdominal CT. In US and CT imaging dorsoventral, mediolateral and craniocaudal liver diameters in their maximum extensions were assessed by two observers. VI was calculated by multiplication of the diameters divided by a constant (3.6). The liver volume determined by a manual segmentation in CT (“true liver volume”) served as gold standard. True liver volume and calculated VI determined by US and CT were compared using Bland–Altman analysis. Mean differences of VI between observers were − 34.7% (− 90.1%; 20.7%) for the US-based and 1.1% (− 16.1%; 18.2%) for the CT-based technique, respectively. Liver volumes determined by semi-automated segmentation, US-based VI and CT-based VI, were as follows: 1.500 ± 347cm3; 863 ± 371cm3; 1.509 ± 432cm3. Results showed a great discrepancy between US-based VI and true liver volume with a mean bias of 58.3 ± 66.9%, and high agreement between CT-based VI and true liver volume with a low mean difference of 4.4 ± 28.3%. Volume index based on CT diameters is a reliable, fast and simple approach for estimating liver volume and can therefore be recommended for clinical practice. The usage of US-based volume index for assessment of liver volume should not be used due to its low accuracy of US in measurement of liver diameters.

Abstract: A thermal model combined with a microstructural and yield strength model has been developed to give a prediction of precipitate evolution and strength in the as welded and post-weld heat treated condition for friction stir welding of 7xxx aerospace aluminium alloys. This fully coupled model is applied to an overaged high strength 7050 aluminium alloy friction stir welded using a range of welding rotation and translation speeds. The evolution of the microstructure has been predicted as a function of the process parameters. The resulting microstructural evolution is shown to be a complex function of both peak temperature observed during the weld cycle and heating/cooling rates. Yield strength has been calculated from the microstructural predictions and a comparison between predicted yield strength and measured hardness has been used to test the modelling approach. Reasonably good agreement between model and experiment is found over the wide range of process parameters investigated.

Abstract: A combined modelling approach was applied to predict the behaviour of high strength 7000 aluminium alloys. Thermal modelling, microstructure modelling and strength modelling were performed in succession to give some insight into the complex precipitation mechanism occurring during friction stir welding (FSW). A quantitative assessment of a recent numerical model to predict the evolution of the precipitate distribution is performed for a high strength 7449 aluminium alloy subjected to a FSW process. An optimised model calibration procedure is also presented for the 7449 alloy. The robustness of this calibration is subsequently tested by applying the model to a different 7000 series alloy, 7150 in peak-aged condition, after FSW. Microstructure predictions are found to be highly dependent on the peak temperature reached during the weld thermal cycle as well as heating and cooling rates. A range of precipitation sequences involving metastable to equilibrium phase transformation and dissolution/coarsening of precipitates are predicted. The predicted microstructures are found to be in good quantitative agreement with the characterised experimental microstructures. Predicted precipitate distributions are used to estimate the strength of the material. These predictions generally agree well with measured hardness values.

Abstract: Predictive models have been developed to calculate the hardness profile and precipitate distribution after friction stir welding of aerospace aluminium alloys. A coupled modelling approach has been used, linking a thermal model to predict the thermal cycle to microstructure and property models. Two levels of modelling have been considered. The first is a semi-empirical approach that predicts hardness profiles. This simple model is demonstrated to correctly reproduce measured profiles in an example weld. The second model provides a detailed prediction of the precipitate evolution. Particle nucleation, growth, dissolution, and coarsening are all accounted for. Model predictions have been compared with experiments for the case of friction stir welded AA7449 thick plate.

Abstract: A numerical model based on the Kampmann and Wagner method was developed to predict the evolution of precipitate distribution in 7xxx aluminium alloy during non-isothermal heat treatments. The model considers the nucleation, growth and coarsening/dissolution of the metastable and equilibrium precipitate phases, η' and η with their stochiometric composition, MgZn2. Constitutive model equations for nucleation were based on the classical theory of nucleation whilst growth and coarsening were treated using classical phase transformation theory. The transition between η' and η, where η' acts as a precursor for η was also accounted for in the model. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to calibrate the homogeneous precipitation kinetics. The model also predicts the evolution of grain boundary precipitates and their effect on precipitate free zone size. Jominy end quench tests were performed to calibrate grain boundary precipitation kinetics. Precipitation on dislocations and dispersoids was considered. The dislocation and dispersoid densities were varied to represent different regions of a grain and therefore account for the spatial distribution of preferential heterogeneous precipitation sites. Comparison between the model prediction and experimental characterisation of the microstructure evolution of a friction stir welded 7449 aluminium alloy was found to be reasonably consistent.

Abstract: The effect of friction stir welding (FSW) and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the second phase particle distribution and cross weld hardness profile in AA7449 plate has been investigated. The alloy was received in an underaged condition, welded, then PWHT to give an overaged condition (in the parent material) . The effect of this complex treatment on the precipitate distribution in the weld and parent plate has been investigated over a range of length scales using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), TEM and FEGSEM. It is shown that the PWHT does not improve the hardness in the heat affected zone (HAZ), which is the location of the strength minimum after welding, but it does reduce the difference between the hardness in the HAZ and the nugget and parent hardness. The reduction in nugget strength after PWHT is particularly marked and is due to replacement of fine GP zones formed on post weld natural ageing by coarse overaged precipitates.

Abstract: Two models to predict the microstructural evolution and post-weld properties of friction stir welds in aerospace aluminium alloys are presented. The first model is a develop- ment of an existing semi-empirical method for the prediction of hardness profiles after welding, calibrated using isothermal hardness data. Post-weld natural ageing is accounted for, and a new method that predicts natural ageing kinetics is introduced. Once calibrated, the model is shown to accurately predict weld hardness profiles. However, this model does not explicitly predict the microstructure and therefore cannot readily be extended to model other properties. It can also only be applied to alloys welded in peak or overaged conditions. The second model aims to explicitly predict the heterogeneous precipitate distributions obtained after welding for any initial condition. It is based on classical kinetic theory and the numerical framework of Kampmann and Wagner. Multiple nucleation sites and multiple phases are accounted for. This model provides detailed microstructural information required for prediction of complex properties.

The model has been applied to FSW of AA7449, an aerospace aluminium alloy. It considers both metastable and equilibrium precipitate phases and the transition between them. It also predicts the evolution of grain boundary precipitates and their effect on the precipitate free zone size. The model has been calibrated against results from isothermal and quench experiments. Subsequent predictions for welds show good qualitative agreement between the model and observation. The model has also been used to explore the effect of different FSW parameters on the predicted precipitate evolution.
