Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

JET, the world’s largest operating tokamak with unique Be/W wall and tritium handling capability, completed a Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) campaign in 2021 (Maggi et al 29th Fusion Energy Conf. ) following a decade of preparatory experiments, dedicated enhancements, technical rehearsals and training (Horton et al 2016 Fusion Eng. Des. 109–111 925). Operation with tritium raises significant technical, safety and scientific challenges not encountered in standard protium or deuterium operation. This contribution describes the tritium operational requirements, pulses and technical preparations, new operating procedures, lessons learned and details on the achieved operational availability and performance. The preparation and execution of the recent JET tritium experiments benefitted from the previous experience in 1991 (Preliminary Tritium Experiment), 1997 (DTE1 campaign) and 2003 (Trace Tritium Campaigns) and consisted of the following five phases: technical rehearsals and scenario preparation, tritium commissioning, 100% tritium campaign, D-T campaign (DTE2), tritium clean-up. Following the clean-up JET resumed normal operation and is currently undertaking a further D-T campaign (DTE3).

Abstract

Measurements of the ion currents to and plasma conditions at the low-field side (LFS) divertor target plate in low-confinement mode plasmas in the JET ITER-like wall materials configuration show that the core plasma density required to detach the LFS divertor plasma is independent of the hydrogenic species protium, deuterium and tritium, and a 40 %/60 % deuterium–tritium mixture. This observation applies to a divertor plasma configuration with the LFS strike line connected to the horizontal part of the LFS divertor chosen because of its superior diagnostic coverage. The finding is independent of the operational status of the JET cryogenic pump. The electron temperature (Te) at the LFS strike line was markedly reduced from 25 eV to 5 eV over a narrow range of increasing core plasma density, and observed to be between 2 eV and 3 eV at the onset of detachment. The electron density (ne) peaks across the LFS plasma when Te at the target plate is 1 eV, and spatially moves to the X-point for higher core densities. The density limit was found approximately 20 % higher in protium than in tritium and deuterium–tritium plasmas.

Abstract

For JET L-mode plasmas in low-recycling conditions (electron temperature at the outer strike point, Te,ot≳30eV), SOLPS-ITER simulations agree within the error bars for the experimental profiles at the low-field side (LFS) divertor target. The peak Balmer-α (Dα) emission in the LFS divertor agrees within the error bars of the KS3 filterscope diagnostic, but is approximately 30% lower than the peak value of the KT1 spectrometer. Simulations have been performed with fluid, kinetic, and hybrid models for the neutrals. The large fluid-kinetic discrepancies of more than a factor 2 are successfully corrected by using a hybrid fluid-kinetic approach, for which kinetic atoms are transferred to the fluid population when the local Knudsen number of the atom becomes smaller than a user-defined transition Knudsen number Knt. The hybrid-kinetic discrepancies are limited to a few % for Knt≤100. When increasing the upstream density to high-recycling conditions, at the onset of detachment (Te,ot≈5eV), the simulations predict more than a factor 2 lower peak ion saturation current to the LFS divertor than the experiments. Also the Dα emission is underpredicted with approximately a factor 2. For these high-recycling conditions, the fluid-kinetic discrepancies are limited to maximum 50%, which are again corrected by using the hybrid approach.

Abstract

We present a spatially hybrid fluid–kinetic neutral model that consists of a fluid model for the hydrogen atoms in the plasma grid region coupled to a kinetic model for atoms sampled at the plasma–void interfaces and a fully kinetic model for the hydrogen molecules. The atoms resulting from molecular dissociation are either treated kinetically (approach 1) or are incorporated in the fluid model (approach 2). For a low-density JET L-mode case, the hybrid method reduces the maximum fluid–kinetic discrepancies for the divertor strike-point electron densities and electron temperatures from approximately 150% to approximately 20% for approach 1 and to approximately 40% for approach 2. Although the simulations with purely fluid neutral model become more accurate for increasing upstream plasma density, we still observe a significant improvement by using the hybrid approach. When consuming the same CPU time in averaging the electron strike-point densities and temperatures over multiple iterations as for the simulations with fully kinetic neutrals, hybrid approach 1 reduces the statistical error with on average a factor 2.5. Hybrid approach 2 further increases this factor to approximately 3.3, at the expense of accuracy.

Abstract

We elaborate a hybrid fluid-kinetic model for neutral particles in the plasma edge. A macro/fluid model with kinetic corrections in the closure terms of the fluid moment equations is solved in the entire domain. The kinetic corrections follow from a Monte Carlo simulation of the micro/kinetic part. We compare two hybrid models with different underlying fluid approximations: (i) a pure pressure-diffusion equation; and (ii) a continuity and parallel momentum equation with pressure-diffusion transport only retained in the directions perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. We asses their performance for a high recycling slab case with fixed background plasma. Compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of the full kinetic equation, the statistical error on the particle source is reduced with 40% and 47% for respectively the hybrid model without and with the parallel momentum equation for the same computational time. For the parallel momentum source there is only a reduction for the model with parallel momentum equation (about 69%). 8. Assessment of fluid neutral models for a detached ITER case

Abstract

We compare the plasma sources (particle, parallel momentum and ion energy) due to plasma-neutral interactions computed with different fluid neutral models with the sources from a Monte Carlo simulation of the kinetic neutral equation. This is done for a fixed background plasma, which is representative for an ITER detached case. We illustrate that the reaction data from the AMJUEL-HYDHEL databases can be incorporated in the fluid models. A pure pressure-diffusion equation gives already accurate results for the particle source, but it is inaccurate for the momentum and energy source. A parallel momentum equation has to be added to achieve predictions of the momentum and energy source within 30% of accuracy. Newly developed boundary conditions, based on the diffusion approximation for incident neutrals, show to be crucial for accurate results of the fluid models close to the divertor target. The slight overestimation of the momentum and energy sources can be further reduced by adding a separate neutral energy equation. Keywords: Plasma edge modeling, Neutrals, Fluid approximation

Neutral gas physics and neutral interactions with the plasma are key aspects of edge plasma and divertor physics in a fusion reactor including the detachment phenomenon often seen as key to dealing with the power exhaust challenges. A full physics description of the neutral gas dynamics requires a 6D kinetic approach, potentially time dependent, where the details of the wall geometry play a substantial role, to the extent that, e.g., the subdivertor region has to be included. The Monte Carlo (MC) approach used for about 30 years in EIRENE (Reiter et al 2005 Fusion Sci. Technol. 47 172-86), is well suited to solve these types of complex problems. Indeed, the MC approach allows simulating the 6D kinetic equation without having to store the velocity distribution on a 6D grid, at the cost of introducing statistical noise. MC also provides very good flexibility in terms of geometry and atomic and molecular (A&M) processes. However, it becomes computationally extremely demanding in high-collisional regions (HCRs) as anticipated in ITER and DEMO. Parallelization on particles helps reducing the simulation wall clock time, but to provide speed-up in situations where single trajectories potentially involve a very large number of A&M events, it is important to derive a hierarchy of models in terms of accuracy and to clearly identify for what type of physics issues they provide reliable answers. It was demonstrated that advanced fluid neutral models are very accurate in HCRs, and at least an order of magnitude faster than fully kinetic simulations. Based on these fluid models, three hybrid fluid-kinetic approaches are introduced: a spatially hybrid technique, a micro-macro hybrid method, and an asymptotic-preserving MC scheme, to combine the efficiency of a fluid model with the accuracy of a kinetic description. In addition, A&M ions involved in the edge plasma chemistry can also be treated kinetically within the MC solver, opening the way for further hybridisation by enabling kinetic impurity ion transport calculations. This paper aims to give an overview of methods mentioned and suggests the most prospective combinations to be developed.

Abstract

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER. Abstract

Neutral particles play a crucial role in the plasma edge due to their strong interaction with the plasma. To capture all physics details most often a kinetic equation is solved using a Monte Carlo (MC) approach. Unfortunately, the MC noise hampers the convergence assessment of the solution of the coupled plasma-neutral equations. Moreover, the MC calculation time increases for high-collisional detached cases. In these high-collisional cases, however, the kinetic model may be well-approximated by a fluid neutral model, which can be solved deterministically. In this paper, we assess different fluid neutral models by comparing the resulting plasma sources to the sources from an MC simulation of the kinetic equation. The fluid models take into account the microscopic cross-sections and rate coefficients from the AMJUEL-HYDHEL databases, as well as the microscopic TRIM reflection model. We accomplish the latter without the introduction of any user-defined fitting parameters. We show that a pure pressure-diffusion equation provides accurate results for the particle source, but is inaccurate for the parallel momentum and ion energy source. Adding a parallel momentum equation gives maximum errors of about 9% for the momentum and 32% for the energy source. These errors are further reduced to respectively 6% and 14% by adding a separate neutral energy equation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
