The Additive Manufacturing (AM) process is applied in industrial applications. However, quality issues of the printed parts, including part distortion and cracks caused by high temperature and fast cooling, result in high residual stress. The theoretical calculation equation shows elastic behavior which is the linear behavior between strain and stress. However, in practice with the additive manufacturing process, strain and stress have nonlinear behavior. So, the prediction of the deformation of a printed part is inaccurate. The contribution of this research is the creation of an Inherent Strain (IS)-based part deformation prediction method during the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process. To have the deformation in the design stage, we developed software for calculating the IS value and predicting the deformation. The difference between the calculated results and the experimental results is still there, so, we proposed an algorithm and developed an optimization module for the system to minimize this difference. In the final optimal printing process, the parameters are derived in order for the real printing process to have the required quality of the SLM printed part.

Candidiasis (oral, vulvovaginal, or systemic bloodstream infections) are important human fungal infections associated with a high global prevalence in otherwise healthy adults but are also opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. With the recent discovery of the multidrug resistant—and often difficult to treat—Candida auris, as well as the rising costs associated with hospitalisations and the treatment of infections caused by Candida species, there is an urgent need to develop effective therapeutics against these pathogenic yeasts. Essential oils have been documented for many years as treatments for different ailments and are widely known and utilised in alternative and complementary therapies, including treating microbial infections. This review highlights knowledge from research on the effects of medicinal plants, and in particular, essential oils, as potential treatments against different Candida species. Studies have been evaluated that describe the experimental approaches used in investigating the anticandidal effects of essential oils (in vivo and in vitro), the established mode of action of the different compounds against different Candida species, the effect of a combination of essential oils with other compounds as potential therapies, and the evidence from clinical trial studies.

The analysis of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from plasma offers great promise for the earlier detection of cancer. At present, changes in DNA sequence, methylation, or copy number are the most sensitive ways to detect the presence of cancer. To further increase the sensitivity of such assays with limited amounts of sample, it would be useful to be able to evaluate the same template molecules for all these changes. Here, we report an approach, called MethylSaferSeqS, that achieves this goal, and can be applied to any standard library preparation method suitable for massively parallel sequencing. The innovative step was to copy both strands of each DNA-barcoded molecule with a primer that allows the subsequent separation of the original strands (retaining their 5-methylcytosine residues) from the copied strands (in which the 5-methylcytosine residues are replaced with unmodified cytosine residues). The epigenetic and genetic alterations present in the DNA molecules can then be obtained from the original and copied strands, respectively. We applied this approach to plasma from 265 individuals, including 198 with cancers of the pancreas, ovary, lung, and colon, and found the expected patterns of mutations, copy number alterations, and methylation. Furthermore, we could determine which original template DNA molecules were methylated and/or mutated. MethylSaferSeqS should be useful for addressing a variety of questions relating genetics and epigenetics.

The absence of rapid, reliable and cost-effective quality control for industrially manufactured graphene materials is an immediate problem for the emerging graphene industry. Recent studies have alarmingly revealed that a large percentage of manufactured graphene materials traded worldwide have a large variation of properties, and some of them are overpriced graphite powders. Currently, benchmark graphene characterization methods based on localized analysis can provide information of key properties of graphene such as the number of layers, particle size, and defects, only on individual graphene particles, which do not represent the properties of “bulk” material. To address these limitations, we developed and validated thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a simple analytical tool for characterization and quality control of manufactured few-layer graphene (FLG) and their non-graphene impurities in powder forms. Our results, using verified control and industrial samples, revealed that the derivative TGA graphs of FLG, graphene oxide and graphite powders have signatory distinctive peaks with temperature of maximum mass decomposition rates (Tmax) in specific ranges, reflecting differences of their structural, chemical, and thermal properties, which are suitable for their qualitative and quantitative analysis. The method is applicable for graphene manufacturers and end-users for simple, low-cost and reliable quality control of graphene materials that will not fail to detect “fake” graphene.

One of the most intriguing characteristics of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from plasma is the sequence at the ends of the fragments. Previous studies have shown that these end-sequences are somewhat different in cancer patients than in healthy individuals. While investigating this characteristic, we noticed that the bases at the 5’-ends of a double-stranded fragment were highly correlated with the GC content of that particular fragment. This led us to develop a method, called MendSeqS (Modified End-based sequencing System), that incorporates the correlation between end-motifs and GC content into the analysis of shallow (0.5x) whole genome sequencing (WGS). When applied to plasma samples, MendSeqS was able to classify patients with a sensitivity of 96% at 98% specificity in a cohort comprised of 107 individuals evaluated in our laboratory (43 with cancer and 64 without). In cohorts evaluated in three other laboratories, comprising a total of 401 individuals (193 with cancer and 208 without), MendSeqS achieved a sensitivity of 87% at 98% specificity. MendSeqS could in principle be combined with other methods of cfDNA analysis to enhance cancer detection.

Enterobacterales have developed a specialized outer membrane polysaccharide (enterobacterial common antigen [ECA]). ECA biosynthesis begins on the cytoplasmic side of the inner membrane (IM) where glycosyltransferases sequentially add sugar moieties to form a complete repeat unit which is then translocated across the IM by WzxE before being polymerized into short linear chains by WzyE/WzzE. Research into WecG, the enzyme responsible for generating ECA lipid-II, has not progressed beyond Barr et al. (1988) who described WecG as a membrane protein. Here we revise our understanding of WecG and re-characterize it as a peripherally associated membrane protein. Through the use of Western immunoblotting we show that WecG in Shigella flexneri is maintained to the IM via its three C-terminal helices and further identify key residues in helix II which are critical for this interaction which has allowed us to identify WecG as a GT-E glycosyltransferase. We investigate the possibility of protein complexes and ultimately show that ECA lipid-I maintains WecG to the membrane which is crucial for its function. This research is the first since Barr et al. (1988) to investigate the biochemistry of WecG and reveals possible novel drug targets to inhibit WecG and thus ECA function and cell viability.

Candida infections are a significant source of patient morbidity and mortality. Candida albicans is the most common pathogen causing Candida infections. Candida auris is a newly described pathogen that is associated with multi-drug-resistant candidiasis and candidaemia in humans. The antifungal effects of various essential oils and plant compounds have been demonstrated against human pathogenic fungi. In this study, the effect of cinnamon leaf and bark essential oils (CEOs) was determined against both C. albicans and C. auris. The disc diffusion (direct and vapour) and broth microdilution method was used to determine antifungal activity of the EOs against selected strains (C. albicans ATCC 10231, C. albicans ATCC 2091 and C. auris NCPF 8971) whilst the mode of action and haemolysin activity of the CEOs were determined using electron microscopy and light microscopy. Direct and vapour diffusion assays showed greater inhibitory activity of bark CEO in comparison with leaf CEO. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) of bark CEO for all tested strains was below 0.03% (v/v), which was lower than the MICs of the leaf CEO (0.06–0.13%, v/v) dependent on the strain and the MFCs at 0.25% (v/v). In the morphological interference assays, damage to the cell membrane was observed and both CEOs inhibited hyphae formation. The haemolysin production assay showed that CEOs can reduce the haemolytic activity in the tested C. albicans and C. auris strains. At low concentrations, CEOs have potent antifungal and antihaemolytic activities in vitro against C. albicans and C. auris.Key points• Essential oils from Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume bark and leaf (CBEO and CLEO) demonstrated fungicidal properties at very low concentrations.• The antifungal activity of CBEO was greater than that of CLEO consistent with other recent published literature.• The mode of action of CBEO and CLEO was damage to the membrane of C. albicans and C. auris.• Both CBEO and CLEO inhibited the formation of hyphae and reduced haemolysin production in C. albicans and C. auris.

Enterobacteriales have evolved a specialized outer membrane polysaccharide [Enterobacterial Common Antigen (ECA)] which allows them to persist in various environmental niches. Biosynthesis of ECA initiates on the cytoplasmic leaflet of the inner membrane (IM) where glycosyltransferases assemble ECA repeat units (RUs). Complete RUs are then translocated across the IM and assembled into polymers by ECA-specific homologues of the Wzy-dependent pathway. Consisting of the membrane proteins Wzx, Wzy and Wzz, the Wzy-dependent pathway is the most common polysaccharide biosynthetic pathway in Gram-negative bacteria where it is most notably involved in LPS O antigen (Oag) biosynthesis. As such, the majority of research directed towards these proteins has been orientated towards Oag biosynthetic homologues with little directed towards ECA homologues. Belonging to the Shape, Elongation, Division and Sporulation (SEDS) protein family, Wzy proteins are polymerases, and are characterized as possessing little or no peptide homology among homologues as well as being polytopic membrane proteins with functionally relevant residues within periplasmic loops, as defined by C-terminal reporter fusion topology mapping. Here, we present the first the first major study into the ECA polymerase WzyE. Multiple sequence alignments and topology mapping showed that WzyE is unlike WzyB proteins involved with Oag biosynthesis WzyE displays high peptide conservation across Enterobacteriales

Outer membrane (OM) polysaccharides allow bacteria to resist harsh environmental conditions and antimicrobial agents, traffic to and persist in pathogenic niches, and evade immune responses. Shigella flexneri has two OM polysaccharide populations, being enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O antigen (Oag); both are polymerized into chains by separate homologs of the Wzy-dependent pathway. The two polysaccharide pathways, along with peptidoglycan (PG) biosynthesis, compete for the universal biosynthetic membrane anchor, undecaprenyl phosphate (Und-P), as the finite pool of available Und-P is critical in all three cell wall biosynthetic pathways. Interactions between the two OM polysaccharide pathways have been proposed in the past where, through the use of mutants in both pathways, various perturbations have been observed. Here, we show for the first time that mutations in one of the two OM polysaccharide pathways can affect each other, dependent on where the mutation lies along the pathway, while the second pathway remains genetically intact. We then expand on this and show that the mutations also affect PG biosynthesis pathways and provide data which supports that the classical mutant phenotypes of cell wall mutants are due to a lack of available Und-P. Our work here provides another layer in understanding the complex intricacies of the cell wall biosynthetic pathways and demonstrates their interdependence on Und-P, the universal biosynthetic membrane anchor. IMPORTANCE Bacterial outer membrane polysaccharides play key roles in a range of bacterial activities from homeostasis to virulence. Two such OM polysaccharide populations are ECA and LPS Oag, which are synthesized by separate homologs of the Wzy-dependent pathway. Both ECA and LPS Oag biosynthesis join with PG biosynthesis to form the cell wall biosynthetic pathways, which all are interdependent on the availability of Und-P for proper function. Our data show the direct effects of cell wall pathway mutations affecting all related pathways when they themselves remain genetically unchanged. This work furthers our understanding of the complexities and interdependence of the three cell wall pathways.

Perturbations in the gut microbiome have been linked to the promotion and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC), with the colonic overabundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum shown as the most consistent marker. Despite the increasing health burden inflicted by CRC in low- and middle-income countries like Vietnam, the CRC-specific microbiome in these populations remains underexplored. Here we conducted a study in Vietnam to enrol 43 CRC patients (cases) and 25 patients with non-cancerous colorectal polyps (controls) between December 2018 and January 2020. Our study investigated the mucosal microbiome signature and genomic diversity of Fusobacterium in Vietnamese CRC patients, using a combination of 16S rRNA gene profiling, anaerobic microbiology, and whole genome sequencing. We found that several oral bacteria, including F. nucleatum and Leptotrichia, were significantly more abundant in the tumour mucosa, and these two bacteria were also more enriched in tumours of advanced CRC stages (III-IV). We obtained 53 Fusobacterium genomes from the saliva, tumour and non-tumour mucosa of six CRC patients. Isolates from the gut mucosa belonged to diverse F. nucleatum subspecies (nucleatum, animalis, vincentii, polymorphum) and a potential new subspecies of F. periodonticum. The Fusobacterium population within each individual was distinct and in many cases diverse, with minimal intra-clonal variation. Phylogenetic analyses showed that within each individual, tumour-associated Fusobacterium were clonal to those isolated from non-tumour mucosa, but distantly related to those isolated from saliva. Genes encoding major virulence factors (Fap2 and RadD) showed variability in length and evidence of horizontal gene transfer. Our work provides a framework to understand the genomic diversity of Fusobacterium within the CRC patients, which can be exploited for the development of CRC diagnostic and therapeutic options targeting this oncobacterium.

Macroporous carbon materials (MCMs) are used extensively for many electrocatalytic applications, particularly as catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs)&mdash, for example, in fuel cells. However, complex processes are currently required for synthesis of MCMs. We present a rapid and facile synthetic approach to produce tailored MCMs efficiently via pyrolysis of sulfonated aniline oligomers (SAOs). Thermal decomposition of SAO releases SO2 gas which acts as a blowing agent to form the macroporous structures. This process was used to synthesise three specifically tailored nitrogen (N)-doped MCM catalysts: N-SAO, N-SAO (phenol formaldehyde) (PF) and N-SAO-reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of macropores (100&ndash, 350 &micro, m). Investigation of ORR efficacy showed that N-SAOPF performed with the highest onset potential of 0.98 V (vs. RHE) and N-SAOrGO showed the highest limiting current density of 7.89 mAcm&minus, 2. The macroporous structure and ORR efficacy of the MCM catalysts synthesised using this novel process suggest that this method can be used to streamline MCM production while enabling the formation of composite materials that can be tailored for greater efficiency in many applications.

Shigella flexneri can synthesize polysaccharide chains having complex sugars and a regulated number of repeating units. S. flexneri lipopolysaccharide O antigen (Oag) is synthesized by the Wzy-dependent pathway, which is the most common pathway used in bacteria for polysaccharide synthesis. The inner membrane protein WzyB polymerizes the Oag repeat units into chains, while the polysaccharide copolymerases WzzB and Wzz(pHS2) determine the average number of repeat units or “the modal length,” termed short type and very long type. Our data show for the first time a direct interaction between WzyB and Wzz(pHS2), with and without the use of the chemical cross-linker dithiobis (succinimidyl propionate) (DSP). Additionally, mutations generated via random and site-directed mutagenesis identify a region of WzyB that caused diminished function and significantly decreased very long Oag chain polymerization, and that affected the aforementioned interaction. These results provide insight into the mechanisms underlying the regulation of Oag biosynthesis. IMPORTANCE Complex polysaccharide chains are synthesized by bacteria, usually at a regulated number of repeating units, which has broad implications for bacterial pathogenesis. One example is the O antigen (Oag) component of lipopolysaccharide that is predominantly synthesized by the Wzy-dependent pathway. Our findings show for the first time a direct physical interaction between WzyB and Wzz(pHS2). Additionally, a set of Wzy mutant constructs were generated, revealing a proposed active site/switch region involved in the activity of WzyB and the physical interaction with Wzz(pHS2). Combined, these findings further understanding of the Wzy-dependent pathway. The identification of a novel interaction with the polysaccharide copolymerase Wzz(pHS2) and the region of WzyB that is involved in this aforementioned interaction and its impact on WzyB Oag synthesis activity have significant implication for the prevention/treatment of bacterial diseases and discovery of novel biotechnologies.

Granular fertilizers should have appropriate mechanical strength to resist significant fracturing during the handling and storage process. Graphene (GN) has the potential to act as a high-performance reinforcement for different composites. This paper provides a comprehensive study of the influence of GN concentration on the crushing strength of two fertilizers (monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP)) with different initial hardness. The results show differences in concentration dependence, with optimum concentration of 0.5% GN for MAP and 0.05% for DAP increasing their crushing strength by 1680% and 67.3%, respectively. The effect of different physicochemical properties of GN, such as method of preparation and specific surface area (SSA) on the crushing strength of the fertilizer was also investigated. Results showed dependence of granules’ crushing strength on the method of GN production and their SSA, while GN samples with a high degree of reduction and SSA were more effective than others.

The synthesis of graphene materials with multiple surface chemistries and functionalities is critical for further improving their properties and broadening their emerging applications. We present a simple chemical approach to obtain bulk quantities of multifunctionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) that combines chemical doping and functionalization using the thiol-ene click reaction. Controllable modulation of chemical multifunctionality was achieved by simultaneous nitrogen doping and gradual chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) using ammonia and hydrazine, followed by covalent attachment of amino-terminated thiol molecules using the thiol-ene click reaction. A series of N-doped rGO (N-rGO) precursors with different levels of oxygen groups were synthesized by adjusting the amount of reducing agent (hydrazine), followed by subsequent covalent attachment of cysteamine via the thermal thiol-ene click reaction to yield different ratios of mixed functional groups including N (pyrrolic N, graphitic N, and aminic N), S (thioether S, thiophene S, and S oxides), and O (hydroxyl O, carbonyl O, and carboxyl O) on the reduced GO surface. Detailed XPS analysis confirmed the disappearance of unstable pyridinic N in cys-N-rGO and the reduction degree threshold of N-rGO for effective cysteamine modification to take place. Our study establishes a strong correlation between different reduction degrees of N-rGO with several existing oxygen functional groups and addition of new tunable functionalities including covalently attached nitrogen (amino) and sulfur (C-S-C, C=S, and S-O). This simple and versatile approach provides a valuable contribution for practical designing and synthesis of a broad range of functionalized graphene materials with tailorable functionalities, doping levels, and interfacial properties for potential applications such as polymer composites, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, adsorption, and sensors.

The performance of a small prototype of a cylindrical drift chamber (CDC) used in the COMET Phase-I experiment was studied by using an electron beam. The prototype chamber was constructed with alternating all-stereo wire configuration and operated with the He-iC$_{4}$H$_{10}$ (90/10) gas mixture without a magnetic field. The drift space-time relation, drift velocity, d$E$/d$x$ resolution, hit efficiency, and spatial resolution as a function of distance from the wire were investigated. The average spatial resolution of 150 $\mu$m with the hit efficiency of 99% was obtained at applied voltages higher than 1800 V. Refereed/Peer-reviewed Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important players in cell to cell communication in reproductive systems. Notably, EVs have been found and characterized in the male reproductive tract, however, direct functional evidence for their importance in mediating sperm function is lacking. We have previously demonstrated that Arrdc4, a member of the α-arrestin protein family, is involved in extracellular vesicle biogenesis and release. Here we show that Arrdc4-mediated extracellular vesicle biogenesis is required for proper sperm function. Sperm from Arrdc4–/– mice develop normally through the testis but fail to acquire adequate motility and fertilization capabilities through the epididymis, as observed by reduced motility, premature acrosome reaction, reduction in zona pellucida binding and two-cell embryo production. We found a significant reduction in extracellular vesicle production by Arrdc4–/- epididymal epithelial cells, and further, supplementation of Arrdc4–/– sperm with additional vesicles dampened the acrosome reaction defect and restored zona pellucida binding. These results indicate that Arrdc4 is important for proper sperm maturation through the control of extracellular vesicle biogenesis. © 2021 The Authors. The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. Owing to many fascinating properties including high thermal and chemical stability, excellent electrical insulation, fire-retardant and antibacterial properties, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has emerged as a prominent 2D material for broad applications. However, the production of high quality of hBN by chemical exfoliation from its precursor is still challenging. This paper presents a high-yield (+83%), low-cost and energy-efficient wet chemical exfoliation strategy, which produces few-layers (FL, 3-6 layers) of edge-functionalized (OH) hBN nanosheets with uniform size (486 ± 51 nm). This optimized preparation is established based on a comprehensive investigation on the key exfoliation parameters such as exfoliation temperature, time and amount of the oxidant (potassium permanganate). High quality of FL-hBN was confirmed by various characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. The outcome of this study paves a promising pathway to effectively produce hBN through a cost-efficient exfoliation approach, which has a significant impact on industrial applications.

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $\omega_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $\omega_a^m$., Comment: 35 pages, 29 figures. Little is known about the trends in colorectal cancer (CRC) in Vietnam. We aimed to investigate the trends in epidemiology and anatomical subsites of CRC in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.Based on the Ho Chi Minh City Cancer Registry data during 1996-2015, we calculated the average annual percent changes (AAPCs) of the age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) by sex, age groups, and anatomical subsites, using joinpoint regressions analysis. We further performed age-period-cohort (APC) analysis using the United States National Cancer Institute's web-based statistical tool to explore the underlying reason for the incidence trend.Over 20 years the overall ASR of CRC increased from 10.5 to 17.9 per 100,000, a 1.7-fold increase. CRC incidence elevated more rapidly in men (AAPC 4.7, 95%CI 2.2-7.3) than in women (AAPC 2.6, 95%CI 0.6-4.8). The highest and lowest increasing rates of ASRs were observed in the 50-64-year-old age group (AAPC 5.3, 95%CI 2.8-7.9) and 50-year-old age group (AAPC 1.1, 95%CI -0.7 to 2.9), respectively. Regarding subsites, rectal cancer had the highest rate of increase (AAPC 3.3, 95%CI 1.0-5.7). Furthermore, the APC analysis indicated significant increases in CRC incidence in birth cohorts after 1975 in both genders.The CRC incidence in Ho Chi Minh City increased, with the more prominent rates being among men and older populations, in rectal subsites, and in people born after 1975. The upward trend of CRC incidence in Ho Chi Minh City may be due to the adoption of a westernized lifestyle.

Engineering of multifunctional binding chemistry on graphene composites using thiol-ene click reaction for selective and highly efficient adsorption of mercury(II) is demonstrated. Graphene oxide (GO) is used as an initial material for covalent attachment of cysteamine molecules by thiol-ene click reaction on C═C groups to achieve a partially reduced graphene surface with multiple binding chemistry such as O, S, and N. Batch adsorption studies showed remarkable adsorption rate with only 1 mg L-1 dosage of adsorbent used to remove 95% Hg (II) (∼1.5 mg L-1) within 90 min. The high adsorption capacity of 169 ± 19 mg g-1, high selectivity toward Hg in the presence of 30 times higher concentration of competing ions (Cd, Cu, Pb) and high regeneration ability (>97%) for five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles were achieved. Comparative study with commercial activated carbon using spiked Hg (II) river water confirmed the high performance and potential of this adsorbent for real mercury remediation of environmental and drinking waters.

Our objective was to describe the risk of hospital admission for virologically confirmed dengue (VCD) and the risk of clinically severe hospitalized VCD occurring up to 4 years after the first dose (years 1 to 4) in three randomized clinical trials comparing tetravalent dengue vaccine with placebo.The relative risks (RR) for hospitalized VCD from first dose to year 4 were estimated by year and age-group in individual and combined studies.Overall, from Year 1 to Year 4, 233 and 228 participants had at least one episode of hospitalized VCD in the vaccinated (n = 22 603) and placebo (n = 11 301) groups, respectively (RR = 0.511, 95% CI 0.42-0.62). Among these, 48 and 47 cases, respectively, were classified as clinically severe. In children aged ≥9 years, 88 and 136 participants had at least one episode of hospitalized VCD in the vaccinated (n = 17 629) and placebo (n = 8821) groups, respectively (RR = 0.324; 95% CI 0.24-0.43). In vaccinated participants aged9 years, particularly in those aged 2-5 years, there were more hospitalized VCD cases compared with the control participants in Year 3 but not in Year 4. The overall RR in those aged9 years for Year 1 to Year 4 was 0.786 (95% CI 0.60-1.03), with a higher protective effect in the 6-8 year olds than in the 2-5 year olds.The overall benefit-risk remained positive in those aged ≥9 years up to year 4, although the protective effect was lower in years 3 and 4 than in years 1 and 2.

The use of pristine graphene (pG) based on solution processed coating technologies is often limited by their poor dispersibility in water and organic solvents which prevents to achieve the best performing properties of pG in coating applications. To address these limitations, we developed a dispersant-free coating approach of pG based on their intrinsic solid-lubricity and interlayer electrostatic interactions. The “rotating drum” method was established to provide suitable conditions for electrostatic deposition of pG-powder which is demonstrated on two model substrates with granular and fibril morphologies (urea and acrylic fibers) to improve their physical and electrical properties. The results showed that the pG coating enables to minimize moisture induced caking tendency of commercial urea prills at a relative humidity (RH) of 85% (higher than critical humidity) exhibiting greater moisture rejection ability (∼2 times higher than uncoated urea) and to improve their anti-abrasive properties. The pG-powder coating applied on nonconductive acrylic fibers provides a stable conductive layer (∼0.8 ± 0.1 kΩ/sq) which made them suitable for using in wearable electronics, sensors and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The developed coating method for pG-powder based on “rotating drum” is generic, simple, eco-friendly, low-cost, and scalable for broad range of coating applications.

We report a new method for the fabrication of highly conductive and transparent ultrathin nitrogen (N) doped graphene films from graphene inks by combining a microwave treatment, ultrasonic nebulizer coating and thermal annealing. The starting graphene oxide (GO) solution was mixed with poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) and treated with microwave (Mw) irradiation to prepare Mw-rGO@PIL inks, which is a gentle reduction of PIL-attached reduced graphene oxide (rGO). In this non-contacting heating method, the PIL was used to not only mediate microwave irradiation and prevent disorder of the graphitic structure, but also repair the lattice defects and introduce nitrogen into the graphitic structure. The ultra-thin graphene films were prepared using the nebulizer for controlling the aerosol droplet distribution of the Mw-rGO@PIL inks coated onto quartz or glass substrates. The prepared films displayed a surface resistance of ∼1.45 × 107 Ω/sq at a transparency of ∼87%. A further thermal treatment was conducted to improve the conductivity of the prepared films by annealing at a high temperature (900 °C), which allowed complete reduction of oxygen containing groups, enhanced graphitization, and reordering of the basal graphene plane and N-doping of the carbon lattice (pyrolytic PIL). The resulting thin films significantly reduced the surface resistance in the range of 1.5 × 103 to 6.2 × 103 Ω/sq at a transparency ranging from 68 to 82%, respectively. The presented method involving in situ N-doping offers a promising environmentally-friendly, low-cost and scalable manufacture of high-quality conductive N-doped graphene films.

A new method based on scanning atmospheric plasma for an ultrafast reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and preparation of highly conductive graphene films and patterns is presented. This simple method is shown to provide a direct and scalable fabrication of graphene films on flexible and shaped substrates with a variety of patterns for broad applications. An effective and ultrafast (similar to 60 s) reduction of GO films into highly conductive graphene films at room temperature is demonstrated by this process that is impossible to achieve by conventional wet chemical and thermal reduction process. The software controlled x-y scanning unit allows fabrication of graphene films with variety of patterns on different substrates including glass, plastic, ceramics and metals with complex shapes required for flexible and wearable electronics and devices. Characterization results confirmed that a thin transparent graphene film can be produced with a surface sheets resistance of 22 k Omega/sq at the transparency of 88%, and a thick film (similar to 25 mu m) with a sheet resistance of 186 Omega/sq. A practical application of plasma fabricated graphene films was demonstrated for a supercapacitor devices able to deliver an outstanding volumetric capacitance of 536.55 F/cm(3) at a current density of 1 A/g. The beneficial effects of graphene (GN) and graphene oxide (GO) additives on the physical properties of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) fertilizer granules were investigated. Low doses (0.05 to 0.5% w/w) of GN and GO sheets were cogranulated with MAP and effects on the crushing strength, abrasion and impact resistance of prepared granules were evaluated. Cogranulation with 0.5% w/w GN sheets (MAP-GN) significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of MAP granules (∼18 times improvement) whereas inclusion of same amounts of GO sheets (MAP-GO) improved the strength to a lesser extent (∼8 times improvement). The cogranulation of GN also improved MAP granules resistance to abrasion (>70%) and impact resistance (>75%). Heating MAP-GO granules at 50 °C after granulation is shown to enhance their physical properties in comparison to MAP-GO granules dried under ambient temperatures. The environmental problems and low efficiency associated with conventional fertilizers provides an impetus to develop advanced fertilizers with slower release and better performances. Here, we report of development of a new carrier platform based on graphene oxide (GO) sheets that can provide a high loading of plant micronutrients with controllable slow release. To prove this concept, two micronutrients, zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), were used to load on GO sheets and hence formulate GO-based micronutrients fertilizer. The chemical composition and successful loading of both nutrients on GO sheets were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The prepared Zn-graphene oxide (Zn-GO) and Cu-graphene oxide (Cu-GO) fertilizers showed a biphasic dissolution behavior compared to that of commercial zinc sulfate and copper sulfate fertilizer granules, displaying desirable fast and slow micronutrient release. A visualization method and chemical analysis were used to assess the release and diffusion of Cu and Zn in soil from GO-based fertilizers compared with commercial soluble fertilizers to demonstrate the advantages of GO carriers and show their capability to be used as a generic platform for macro- and micronutrients delivery. A pot trial demonstrated that Zn and Cu uptake by wheat was higher when using GO-based fertilizers compared to that when using standard zinc or copper salts. This is the first report on the agronomic performance of GO-based slow-release fertilizer.

Surface coatings to protect materials from mechanical abrasion, fire and microbial colonization are associated with billion dollars of expenses across broad range of industrial, domestic and defence applications. Currently used protective coatings based on heavy metals, halogenated fire-retardation, and biocide agents have considerable environmental concerns due their toxicity, and lack of effectiveness with limited functionality. In this paper, we present engineering of new multifunctional coating based on graphene composites with the ability to provide “3-in-1” protective properties. These multiple functionalities were created with specially designed graphene composite by growing sodium metaborate (NaBO2·xH2O) crystals into graphene oxide (GO) layer during their reduction, which works synergistically as a surface binder, a flame-retardant additive, and an antibacterial agent. The testing of protective coating performances revealed an outstanding mechanical robustness (ASTM-class 4B), and the reduction of bacterial colonization up to ∼99.92%. The high flame retardant performance of the coated wood, and paper showed non-flammability, strong intumescent effect, and self-extinguishing ability during fire. These protective coatings based on graphene composites due the simplicity of their formulations, scalability, and outstanding performance offer a great potential for their industrial, structural, and environmental applications.

Heavy metals contamination in the natural waters remains an unresolved environmental challenge pressing for the development of purification technologies. This paper presents the green engineering of a new bio-sponge for heavy metals adsorption composed of alginate bio-polymeric network encapsulated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified with iron oxide nanoparticles and covalently attached multithiol (pentaerythritol tetrakis-mercaptopropionate) molecules using photoinitiated thiol-ene click chemistry. The multithiol functionalized graphene bio-sponge (SH-Graphene bio-sponge) is designed to enhance adsorption performances of heavy metals including structural approach combined with oxygen functionalities and high density of sulfur-containing groups (10.2 at % S, confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, XPS) with high binding affinity towards specific heavy metals (Cd and Pb). It was shown that the level of thiol functionalization on the graphene structure within the bio-sponge can be controlled by tuning the Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation time without adjusting the concentration of the precursors. SH-functionalized graphene bio-sponge showed outstanding adsorption capacity for Pb (II): 101.01 mg/g and Cd (II): 102.99 mg/g, outperformed commercial and literature reported adsorbents in highly competitive selectivity studies using co-existing heavy metal ions (Cu, Co, Pb and Cd) spiked- sea water. The multithiol modified bio-sponge also showcased an excellent stability and reusability feature with only 0.015 mg/L Pb (II) detected, conforming the strict United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) for lead, after five recurring cycles using mixed heavy metal ions solution and acidic eluent. This study presents the results of an experimental study on the mechanical properties of graphene oxide (GO)-cement mortar composites. Four different mixes of cement mortars with GO contents of 0%, as a control mix, 0.03, 0.1, and 0.5% by the weight of cement were prepared. The effect of the GO content on the axial tension and compression strength of mixes were examined. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests were performed on the specimens to understand the mechanisms behind the mechanical test results. The results show that the tensile and compressive strength of GO-cement mortar composites steadily increase up to 37.5 and 77.7% with an increase in GO content to 0.1%, respectively. This is attributed to the improved bonding between the cement matrix and GO particles due to the high dispersibility of GO sheets in the composite at the optimum concentration. The results also show that further increase in the GO content was unfavorable as the GO sheets restacked, which reduced the bridging stress and gave poor dispersion of GO in the composite.

Successful conversion of diatomites (SiO2) into silicon diatoms was achieved via the magnesiothermic reduction method followed by deposition of MnO2 nanosheets to fabricate unique 3D silicon-diatom@MnO2 electrodes and demonstrate their application for high-performance supercapacitors. The synergy between the microporous diatom structure and layered MnO2 nanosheets was found to produce excellent electrochemical performance evidenced by high specific capacitance (341.5 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1), good rate capability (47.7% retention with current increases around 20 times) and steady cycling performance (84.8% remained after 2000 cycles). The prepared asymmetric supercapacitor based on silicon diatom@MnO2 nanosheets as a positive electrode and active graphene oxide (AGO) as a negative electrode delivered a maximum power density of 2.22 kW kg−1 and an energy density of 23.2 W h kg−1, which is superior to many other silicon-based and MnO2-based materials. These outstanding performances are attributed to the unique 3D microstructures, good conductivity of silicon diatoms and the highly porous surface formed by interconnection of MnO2 nanosheets. Considering the low cost of initial materials and simplicity of the fabrication process, these silicon diatom@MnO2 nanosheet electrodes have significant potential to be used as an electrode material for inexpensive and high-performance supercapacitors.

Here, we report a new method to prepare graphene from graphite by the liquid phase exfoliation process with sonication using graphene oxide (GO) as a dispersant. It was found that GO nanosheets act a as surfactant to the mediated exfoliation of graphite into a GO-adsorbed graphene complex in the aqueous solution, from which graphene was separated by an additional process. The preparation of isolated graphene from a single to a few layers is routinely achieved with an exfoliation yield of up to higher than 40% from the initial graphite material. The prepared graphene sheets showed a high quality (C/O ∼ 21.5), low defect (ID/IG ∼ 0.12), and high conductivity (6.2 × 10(4) S/m). Moreover, the large lateral size ranging from 5 to 10 μm of graphene, which is believed to be due to the shielding effect of GO avoiding damage under ultrasonic jets and cavitation formed by the sonication process. The thin graphene film prepared by the spray-coating technique showed a sheet resistance of 668 Ω/sq with a transmittance of 80% at 550 nm after annealing at 350 °C for 3 h. The transparent electrode was even greater with the resistance only 66.02 Ω when graphene is deposited on an interdigitated electrode (1 mm gap). Finally, a flexible sensor based on a graphene spray-coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is demonstrated showing excellent performance working under human touch pressure (10 kPa). The graphene prepared by this method has some distinct properties showing it as a promising material for applications in electronics including thin film coatings, transparent electrodes, wearable electronics, human monitoring sensors, and RFID tags.

Lead (Pb) as a traditional shielding material is limited due to its toxicity and heaviness. Recently, nanomaterials in different forms have attracted considerable attention for radiation shielding applications, due to their prominent chemical and physical properties. This work aims to evaluate the effects of size and morphology on the X-ray shielding performance. Both micro- and nano-sized Bi2O3 films with different morphologies (e.g. particles, wires, flowers) were synthesized via a ball milling process and a hydrothermal treatment, respectively. X-ray transmission tests were conducted using a superficial X-ray unit at energies of 30, 50 and 80 kVp (effective energies converted as 14, 24 and 29 keV), which were then compared with mass attenuation coefficient of Bi2O3 obtained from XCOM database. The results showed that the nanoflower (388 ± 30 nm) Bi2O3 film gave the best X-ray shielding performance among all three energies (60.49% improvement at 30 kVp, especially) compared to the bulk Bi2O3 film, indicating the synergy effects of both particle size and morphologies impact on low energies of X-ray attenuation. Moreover, the nanoparticle (830 ± 30 nm) Bi2O3 film enhanced the X-ray attenuation, up to 13.27% at 30 kVp relative to microparticle (1.21 ± 0.14 μ m) films. However, the nanoflower (388 ± 30 nm) Bi2O3 film gave the best X-ray shielding performance (45.93% and 47.49% improvement at 30 kVp, respectively) compared to the microwire (1.30 ± 0.13 μ m) and nanoparticle (830 ± 30 nm) Bi2O3 film, due to its large surface-to-volume ratio, showing that morphological variations can significantly impact the X-ray transmission to enhance the radiation shielding performance compared to the particle size. Theoretical data from XCOM database compared with experimental measurements showed the limitation of simulation as it can only calculate the ideal condition of regular distributions in materials with standardized geometry. This work concluded that the synergy effect of the particle size and morphology should be considered when designing effective radioprotective garments.

This paper presents a new and facile method to prepare molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/graphene composites and their inks based on an improved ball milling process. The developed method is cost effective, environmentally friendly, and scalable, producing few-layer MoS2 material and MoS2/graphene-based inks. The prepared inks after characterization by SEM, Raman, XRD, FTIR, CA and rheology were used to fabricate electrodes for supercapacitors by adopting two designs: 2D printed and sandwiched electrodes. The electrodes showed excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 392 Fg−1 at 5 mV s−1 and low equivalent resistance of 0.41 Ω, which outperforms the properties of graphene electrodes. The specific capacitance of electrodes prepared by 2D printing using MoS2/graphene ink was 76 Fg−1 at 5 mV s−1 with an areal capacitance of 58.5 mF/cm−2 at 0.77 mg/cm−2, demonstrating high energy storage capability. The performance of the MoS2/graphene composites and their inks highlights their promising application as electrode materials for high-performance energy storage devices.

The use of graphene derivatives to improve the performance of cement mortar composites has received significant attention in recent years. However, because of diversity of graphene derivatives and their properties, which depend on their preparation, it is critical to consider their size, surface chemistry, crystallinity, surface area, and impurity. In particular, there is still lack of understanding on the influence of the graphene particle size on the performance of cement mortar composite. This paper presents the study on the size effect of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on physiochemical and mechanical properties of cement mortar composites. A series of rGOs with different particle sizes were prepared by different sonication times of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h and then added with optimum dosage of 0.1% to the composites. The mechanical test results revealed that the composite containing rGO with 0.1% dosage and particle size of 169.8 ± 5.8 nm prepared with 4 h sonication time has 53% and 91% higher tensile and compressive strengths at 28 days than the plain cement mortar composite, respectively, which are higher than those obtained by the use of rGO with particle size of 245.0 ± 29.3 nm prepared with 1 h sonication time. This is explained by the higher molecular bonding, hydration degree, and crystallinity of the composite incorporating rGO with a smaller particle size. This study provides a valuable contribution toward better understanding of the influence of rGO particle size on the properties of cementitious composites to optimize their performance.

This work demonstrates that two systematic errors, coherent betatron oscillations (CBO) and muon losses can be reduced through application of radio frequency (RF) electric fields, which ultimately increases the sensitivity of the muon $g-2$ experiments. As the ensemble of polarized muons goes around a weak focusing storage ring, their spin precesses, and when they decay through the weak interaction, $\mu^+ \rightarrow e^+ \nu_e \bar{\nu_\mu}$, the decay positrons are detected by electromagnetic calorimeters. In addition to the expected exponential decay in the positron time spectrum, the weak decay asymmetry causes a modulation in the number of positrons in a selected energy range at the difference frequency between the spin and cyclotron frequencies, $\omega_\text{a}$. This frequency is directly proportional to the magnetic anomaly $a_\mu =(g-2)/2$, where $g$ is the g-factor of the muon, which is slightly greater than 2. The detector acceptance depends on the radial position of the muon decay, so the CBO of the muon bunch following injection into the storage ring modulate the measured muon signal with the frequency $\omega_\text{CBO}$. In addition, the muon populations at the edge of the beam hit the walls of the vacuum chamber before decaying, which also affects the signal. Thus, reduction of CBO and unwanted muon loss increases the $a_\mu$ measurement sensitivity. Numerical and experimental studies with RF electric fields yield more than a magnitude reduction of the CBO, with muon losses comparable to the conventional method., Comment: 14 pages, 25 figures

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of polyamine modified reduced graphene oxide rich with mixed amino groups as a cost- and performance- efficient adsorbent for mercury removal from waters. The synthetic approach is based on a simple process to functionalize graphene oxide (GO) with low-cost commercial polyamine epoxy hardener followed by the reduction of created polyamine-GO hybrid by hydrothermal (HT) or chemical reduction (CM) process with hydrazine. Both polyamine modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO), referred as HT-rGO-N and CM-rGO-N, exhibited 8.28% and 5.47% N content, respectively. Mercury adsorption study showed that these rGO functionalized composites have high adsorption kinetics, reaching equilibrium within the first ten minutes. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium of their adsorption process can be well described using pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm models with estimated sorption capacity of 63.8 mg/g and 59.9 mg/g for HT-rGO-N and CM-rGO-N respectively. The adsorption capacity for Hg is achieved in broad range of pH (pH 5–9) and can be described as high-performing compared with other amino based adsorbents reported in the literature. More importantly, these adsorbents showed very high selectivity towards Hg(II), outperformed the commercial activated carbon adsorbent with only ~16% mercury removal efficiency achieved in multimetallic solution consisting of Hg(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions in both solid and dispersed forms. Finally, these polyamine functionalized rGO adsorbents confirmed their notable performance in regeneration and removal of spiked mercury from natural waters mimicking real applications. These results demonstrated realistic water remediation capabilities of developed polyamine functionalized rGO adsorbents as promising candidates for environmental applications.

Well-defined sulfonated aniline oligomer (SAO) microstructures with rod and flake morphologies were successfully synthesized using an aniline and oxidant with a molar ratio of 10:1 in ethanol and acidic conditions (pH 4.8). The synthesized oligomers showed excellent dispersibility and assembled as well-defined structures in contrast to the shapeless aggregated material produced in a water medium. The synergistic effects among the monomer concentration, oxidant concentration, pH, and reaction medium are shown to be controlling parameters to generate SAO microstructures with distinct morphologies, whether micro sheets or micro rods.

Iron oxides and their hydroxides have been studied and analysed with properties of their mutual transformations under different hydrothermal conditions being indicated. Amorphous bacteria nanowires produced from biofilm waste were investigated under the influence of pH at a fixed duration (20 h) and reaction temperature (200 °C). The morphology, structure, and particle size of the transformation of hematite (α-Fe2O3) was obtained and characterised with SEM, XRD, FTIR, and particle sizer. The optimal conditions for the complete conversion of amorphous iron oxide nanowires to crystalline α-Fe2O3 is under acidic conditions where the pH is 1. The flower-like α-Fe2O3 structures have photocatalytic activity and adsorbent properties for heavy metal ions. This one-pot synthesis approach to produce α-Fe2O3 at a low cost would be greatly applicable to the recycling process of biofilm waste in order to benefit the environment.
