1. Integral modelling of the ITER cooling water systems radiation source for applications outside of the Bio-shield

Abstract

During the plasma pulses, the neutron-induced activation of the cooling water will produce an important contribution to the radiation levels in the ITER Tokamak Complex. The resulting radiation field has a complex spatial distribution due to the combination of decay and production of radioisotopes in the intricate cooling lines that feed the numerous systems inside and outside the bio-shield. An accurate estimation of the cooling water radiation field is necessary to ensure that the radiological zoning is respected. As of today, this issue has been studied using simple, manually defined geometries with limited representation of the tens of thousands of components that constitutes the cooling circuits. This work describes the first production of a realistic and up-to-date integral neutronics modelling of all the cooling systems containing activated water beyond the bio-shield. The work was enabled by the development of computerized geometry modelling techniques to automatically simplify and dimension the system components. An independent review of the method ensured the validity of the simplified model. Moreover, automated scripts produced the activated water radiation source associated with the geometry model. The latter was obtained by linking thousands of cylinders, representing the coolant volumes, in chains of MCNP cells that reproduced the paths of the water lines inside the Tokamak Complex and, eventually, by calculating the radioisotopes activity in each cell. This methodology greatly speeds up the modelling time, reduces the risk of human error and enables the representation of the Tokamak Cooling Water System radiation source with an unprecedented degree of realism.

Abstract

The external walls of the Tokamak building, made of thick concrete, provide the nuclear shielding for operators working in adjacent buildings and for the environment. There are a series of openings to these external walls, devoted to ducts or pipes for ventilation, waveguides and transmission lines for heating systems and diagnostics, cooling pipes, cable trays or busbars. The shielding properties of the wall shall be preserved by adequate design of the openings in order not to affect the radiological zoning in adjacent areas. For some of them, shielding properties of the wall are not affected because the size of the network is quite small or the source is far from the opening. But for most of the openings, specific features shall be considered. Even if the approach is the same and the ways to shield can be standardized, specific analysis is requested in any case because the constraints are different.

Abstract

The development of a Pd-based membrane reactor to be applied in processes for tritium removal from various gaseous streams of tokamak systems has been carried out. In particular, the membrane reactor has been designed for decontaminating soft housekeeping wastes of JET. This membrane reactor consists of Pd–Ag permeator tube fixed in a finger-like mode into a stainless steel shell. The feed stream (gases to be detritiated) is fed inside the membrane lumen where the isotopic exchange takes place on to a catalyst bed while pure hydrogen (protium) is sent in countercurrent mode in the shell side. The feed stream consists of 200 Ncm3 min−1 of helium with 10% of tritiated water (tritium content 1.11 × 108 Bq h−1). The membrane reactor design has been based on a simplified calculation model which takes into consideration the very low tritium content of the gas to be processed and the complete oxidation of the tritiated species in the feed stream. The model considers a tubular Pd–Ag membrane divided into finite elements where the mass balances are performed according to both the thermodynamic equilibrium reactions and permeation rates through the membrane of the hydrogen isotopes. The reactor model has permitted to verify that a Pd–Ag commercial tube of diameter 10 mm, length 500 mm and wall thickness 0.150 mm is capable to attain a decontamination factor larger than 10. A new mechanical design of the Pd membrane reactor has been also developed: especially, harmful mechanical stresses of the long permeator tube consequent to the hydrogenation and thermal cycling has been avoided. Furthermore, an innovative effective heating system of the membrane has been also applied.

5. Pre-study of a detritiation process for plasma facing components in the ITER hot cells

Abstract

In ITER and future fusion reactors, high heat flux (plasma facing) components will be replaced at regular intervals. Before being stored in hot cells or sent to final disposal, these components or parts of them must be detritiated to recover the large quantities of tritium still contained in the matrix (recycling tritium as fuel) and facilitate the waste acceptance in storage. This paper aims at evaluating the capability of a detritiation process to match the ITER requirements.For that purpose potential detritiation methods have been analysed in terms of detritiation performance leading to the choice of a reference process based on thermal treatment. In parallel, some detailed data concerning the waste have been compiled mainly concerning the amount of waste to treat, and its tritium specific activity with its profile in bulky materials. Since no tritium profile is currently available in ITER documents, an estimation of such profile has been performed based on the modelling of tritium diffusion into the plasma facing components. Thus, the reference detritiation process has been evaluated by a simple but representative modelling. Basically, this first approach enables to confirm the interest of such thermal process. Nevertheless, its design in the ITER hot cells requires a more sophisticated approach.

Abstract

Within the framework of management of waste produced by fusion facility, the presence of high tritium content in large pieces is very specific. This question is very sensitive in the case of maintenance of plasma facing components (PFC). In order to reach several goals (tritium recovery, limitation of tritium content in the waste), several treatment methods have been analysed and thermal detritiation is selected as a reference process. In the case of ITER facility a tritium recovery station based on this technique is foreseen. In order to better understand which parameters have important influence on the efficiency of the treatment (detritiation factor), a recall of the process principle and of the main data concerning tritium behaviour in different materials is done. For example, low tritium diffusion coefficient in Be which is the material of the first layer on some components can limit drastically the process performance. In this paper a recall of the different process parameters is presented. Some important parameters are selected in order to lead a sensitivity study on adequate variation domains. It allows studying several scenarios of treatment and analysing the consequences of them. The main parameters of this study are the level of temperature, the duration of treatment, the renewal rate of the furnace atmosphere, the presence of Be or not. The main response to this sensitivity analysis is the detritiation factor, however some other consequences such as tritiated water flow rate and also tritium concentration in water are evaluated. Then the consequences of change of operating parameters are compared in order to identify what could be the most appropriate operating domain.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing.
