Resumen: Introducción: El Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) es una adaptación del test de cribado ACE, la cual ha demostrado tener una alta sensibilidad y especificidad para detectar disfunción cognitiva en pacientes con demencia y otras patologías neurológicas y psiquiátricas. Si bien el ACE-III ya ha sido validado en castellano (España), este no ha sido validado en Latinoamérica. El objetivo del presente estudio fue validar el ACE-III en una población argentina y chilena. Métodos: Se evaluó un grupo de pacientes con enfermedad de Alzheimer (n = 70), un grupo de pacientes con la variante conductual de la demencia frontotemporal (n = 31) y un grupo control (n = 139) con la versión en español del ACE-III; reclutados en centros médicos de ambos países. Resultados: La versión argentina-chilena del ACE-III presentó una buena consistencia interna (alfa de Cronbach = 0,87). Se hallaron diferencias significativas en los valores totales del ACE-III entre el grupo control y el grupo de demencias (p< 0,05) y entre ambos grupos de demencia (p< 0,05). Con un punto de corte de 86, el 98,6% de los pacientes con DTA, el 83,9% de pacientes con variante conductual de la demencia frontotemporal y el 84,2% de los controles fue correctamente clasificado. Conclusiones: El presente estudio ha demostrado que el ACE-III continúa siendo una herramienta útil para la detección de la disfunción cognitiva en la demencia. Restoration of soils contaminated by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) can be carried out through phytoremediation technique able to reduce bioavailable PTEs by translocation them from the soil to the different organs of the plants. The European LIFE ECOREMED project is now implementing an eco- compatible protocol for soil restoration through phytoremediation in Litorale Domitio - Agro Aversano NIPS (South Italy, Campania region). Populus nigra (P. nigra) is among the fastest-growing trees among the short rotation coppice with an annual dry matter production of 17.8 Mg ha-1 y-1. Poplar trees, though not hyperaccumulators, are effective in uptaking PTEs from a very deep layer due to the efficiency of their root systems. However, after soil restoration, the problem of a safe disposal of the contaminated biomasses should be faced. Pyrolysis could be an eco-sustainable post-processing treatment capable to reduce the mass of the contaminated biomass, concentrate the PTEs in the residual char and produce a vapor phase heavy metal free energy carrier. In addition there are many possibilities for valorizing char as fuel in traditional and advanced power generation facilities, in the agronomic field for carbon sequestration and as fertilizer, as contaminant adsorbent in wastewater and soil, as adsorbent or catalyst for gas cleaning, as catalyst for syngas conversion to liquid hydrocarbons and biodiesel production, as raw material for supercapacitors and, finally, as filler in wood and polymer composites. The stability of PTEs and the physico-chemical properties of the produced chars are relevant to assess if such material could be converted into a valuable resource. Steam assisted pyrolysis tests of P. nigra, contaminated by Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, have been conducted under slow pyrolysis conditions. The effect of the pyrolysis final temperature has been investigated in the temperature range 653-873 K in order to study the distribution of heavy metals in the pyrolysis products. The results show that the concentration of the metals in the chars along the temperature has a non-monotonous trend for P. nigra branches. The maximum concentration of Cd and Pb is measured in the chars produced at 653 K and 753 K, respectively. In chars derived from leaves Cd concentration shows the same trend as in branches, whereas the concentration of Cu, Pb, Zn increases in the whole temperature range. The metals recovery in the chars slightly decreases with temperature in all the examined cases, except for Cd that show a quite complete devolatilization even at temperature higher than 753 K.

Succinic acid is increasingly used in pharmaceutical industries, for the production of additives in food industries, in agriculture and in refinery processes as a precursor of many chemical compounds among which the most important is the succinate salt. It is also used as an ion chelator and surfactant, and for the biochemicals production. Currently, succinic acid is mainly produced through chemical petroleum-based processes, usually from n-butane using maleic anhydride. However, the use of petrochemical feedstocks raises serious environmental problems, due to the higher values of temperature and pressure required. The biotechnological production of succinic acid by microbial conversion of lignocellulosic biomass is attracting growing interest due to the environmental and economic advantages offered. This research is focused on the exploitation of Arundo donax (Giant reed) as a source of lignocellulosic biomass. Arundo donax is a perennial crop particularly suitable for energy production, as it offers high yields per hectare, even in partially fertile or polluted soils, not used for agriculture. Hydrolyzate of Arundo donax will be used as growth media for the Actinobacillus succinogenes 130Z, a bacterium typically found in the bovine rumen, that is recognized as one of the most promising for the biotechnological production of succinic acid, as it is able to produce higher concentrations of succinic acid. The experimental analysis is carried out to optimize the production of succinic acid taking into account the effect of the most critical parameters of the process (microbial biomass, pH, reducing sugars, volatile fatty acids, and succinic acid). Tests have shown that in 48h the sugars are completely biodegraded with a total production of bio-succinic acid of 5.9 g for 9.1 g of reducing sugars, an hourly production 0.12 g h-1 with a yield equal to 65%.

A discontinuous fermenter was used to grow the oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi in the presence of hydrolysates of lignocellulosic wastes from Arundo donax. The lignocellulosic materials were first steam- exploded and subsequently treated with commercial preparations of cellulases and ß-glucosidases, to obtain a mixture of fermentable sugar. A physico-mathematical model was developed to find the optimal condition of production. Specific attention was devoted to the effect of temperature on the growth of L. Starkeyi and on the intracellular accumulation of lipids. The composition of the biodiesel produced was compatible with a satisfactory performance as automotive fuel, in terms of both the resistance to oxidation and the cold performance.

Background: The use of federated networks can reduce the risk of disclosure for sensitive datasets by removing the requirement to physically transfer data. Federated networks support federated analytics, a type of privacy-enhancing technology, enabling trustworthy data analysis without the movement of source data., Objectives: To set out the methodology used by the International COVID-19 Data Alliance (ICODA) and its partners, the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank and Aridhia Informatics in piloting a federated network infrastructure and consequently testing federated analytics using test data provided from an ICODA project, the International Perinatal Outcome in the Pandemic (iPOP) Study. To share the challenges and benefits of using a federated network infrastructure to enable trustworthy analysis of health-related data from multiple countries and sources., Results: This project successfully developed a federated network between the SAIL Databank and the ICODA Workbench and piloted the use of federated analysis using aggregate-level model outputs as test data from the iPOP Study, a one-year, multi-country COVID-19 research project. This integration is a first step in implementing the necessary technical, governance and user experiences for future research studies to build upon, including those using individual-level datasets from multiple data nodes., Conclusions: Creating federated networks requires extensive investment from a data governance, technology, training, resources, timing and funding perspective. For future initiatives, the establishment of a federated network should be built into medium to long term plans to provide researchers with a secure and robust data analysis platform to perform joint multi-site collaboration. Although the end of the critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic has been declared, its consequences are still observed in the general population and some categories of workers. HCWs have had to face the battle against this disease on the front lines. In our study, we evaluated the current state of the consequences of the pandemic on compassion fatigue, loneliness, empathy, anxiety, and hopelessness in a group of 71 HCWs from a rehabilitation center. This data, collected in the time of May-June 2024 (T2), was compared in the same sample in 2020 (T0) and 2023 (T1). The results highlighted increased burnout (P-Bonferroni: 0.005) and feelings of loneliness in T2 (P-Bonferroni: 0.005). Importantly, the results of the compassion satisfaction remained stable, providing reassurance about the resilience of HCWs. Secondary Trauma results decreased in T2, indicating less psychological pressure associated with COVID-19 pathology.

Phytocannabinoids represent the hallmark of the secondary metabolism of Cannabis sativa . The content of major phytocannabinoids is closely related to genetic variation as well as abiotic elicitors such as temperature, drought, and saline stress. The present study aims to evaluate hemp response to saline irrigation supplied as NaCl solutions with an electrical conductivity (EC) of 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 dS m -1 (S1, S2, and S3, respectively) compared to a tap water control (S0). In addition, the potential beneficial effect of a plant-based biostimulant (a legume protein hydrolysate) in mitigating the detrimental effects of saline irrigation on crop growth and phytocannabinoid composition was investigated. Sodium chloride saline irrigation significantly reduced biomass production only with S2 and S3 treatments, in accordance with an induced nutrient imbalance, as evidenced by the mineral profile of leaves. Multivariate analysis revealed that the phytocannabinoid composition, both in inflorescences and leaves, was affected by the salinity level of the irrigation water. Interestingly, higher salinity levels (S2-S3) resulted in the predominance of cannabidiol (CBD), compared to lower salinity ones (S0-S1). The negative symptoms of schizophrenia are responsible for patients' worse quality of life. The association with cognitive deficits impairs clinical and psychopathological conditions. Our small 5-year observational study evaluated the efficacy of clozapine in negative and cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia inpatients. The overall results showed a significant improvement in the mean total scores of the BNSS and PANSS (at baseline (T0) vs five years (T3)). The improvement was also in some negative subscales (PANSS Negative Factor subscale) but not in others and the Epitrack tool. The overall results showed that clozapine is a useful therapeutic tool that does not affect the cognitive decline of these patients.

Mulching is a common practice for improving crop yield and obtaining an out-of-season production, but when made using plastic materials it can bring environmental problems due to the management and the disposal of films at the end of the cropping seasons. To increase the sustainability of this practice, recently, mulching films made with biodegradable organic materials have become more widely used. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of a biodegradable mulching film on yield and qualitative traits of the San Marzano tomato fruits over two years (2014 and 2015). Two different types of mulching were tested: (i) black biodegradable film (MB12) and (ii) black low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were compared to bare soil (BS). Both mulching films elicited a 25% increase in yield, mainly due to the significantly higher number of fruits per square meter, compared to BS. Both mulching films also elicited a 9.9% increase in total soluble solids and a 57% increase in carotenoid content, while firmness showed the highest value in BS fruits. MB12 determined the highest value of the Hunter color ratio a/b of tomato fruits, followed by LDPE, while the lowest value was recorded in BS fruits. Both mulching films elicited an increase of 9.6%, 26.0%, and 11.7% for flavonoids, polyphenols, and AsA, respectively. In 2014, the MB12 degradation started at 71 days after transplant (DAT); in 2015, at 104 DAT. Therefore, replacing polyethylene with biodegradable film would seem to be an agronomically efficient and environmentally sustainable practice.

In this work, a grass-based phytoremediation system integrated with an organic amendment and biostimulants was evaluated for remediating contaminated sites. Plant growth and biological fertility were monitored to assess the efficacy of a vegetative cap used as a safety measure to reduce sanitary and environmental risks of industrially contaminated soils and soil-washing sludges. Both matrices were potentially contaminated with Pb and Zn with an ecological risk index from low to moderate. According to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) bioaccessibility tests, the exposure to the released fine particulate matter may cause serious risks to human beings, in particular to children. The grass mixture was well adapted to both the substrates and a low PTEs mobility was detected, thus, reducing the leaching risk to ground water sources. Compost addition augmented significantly nitrogenase reductase (nifH) and ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) gene expression abundance in both substrates. Furthermore, a positive interaction between compost fertilization and a Trichoderma-based biostimulant inoculation was recorded in sludges resulting in a significant stimulation of nitrogen-fixing and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. The application of compost and biostimulant increased soil fertility and plant growth. Furthermore, there was a slight reduction in PTE bioaccessibility, thus, improving the efficiency of the phytostabilization, limiting the resuspension and dispersion of the health-risk soil particulate., (© 2022. Alterations in the metabolic profile are one of the main consequences of the use of drug therapies in psychiatric patients. In particular, dysfunction of the metabolic profile (lipid and glycidic) is very frequent in patients taking antipsychotics, especially second-generation ones, and antidepressants. Similar alterations, albeit, to a lesser extent, were highlighted with the use of mood stabilizers. There are some clinical conditions in which clinicians add antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Our study analyzed this interaction in 116 inpatients. Data showed an overall increase in metabolic parameters in all patients analyzed. However, no statistically significant differences were found in some subgroups of patients. The correlation between metabolic alterations and cognitive dysfunctions in these patients was also analyzed (not statistically significant).

Anterior cruciate ligament injury and reconstruction (ACLR) affects articular cartilage thickness profiles about the tibial, femoral, and patellar surfaces; however, it's unclear whether the magnitudes of change in cartilage thickness, as well as the locations and areas over which these changes occur, differ between males and females. This is important to consider as differences exist between the sexes with regard to knee biomechanics, patellofemoral pain, and anatomic alignment, which influence risk of an index and repeated injury. Subjects underwent ACLR with a bone-patella tendon-bone autograft. At 4-year follow-up, they had asymptomatic knees; however, significant ACL injured-to-contralateral normal knee differences in articular cartilage thickness values were observed. Both thickening and thinning of cartilage occurred about the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints, relative to matched control subjects with normal knees. Further, the location of the areas and magnitudes of thickening and thinning were different between females and males. Thickening (swelling) of articular cartilage is an early finding associated with the onset of posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Therefore, the increases in cartilage thickness that were observed in this cohort may represent early signs of the onset of PTOA that occur prior to the patient developing symptoms and radiographic evidence of this disease. The different locations of areas that underwent a change in cartilage thicknesses between males and females suggest that each sex responds differently to knee ligament trauma, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and return to activity, and indicates that sex-specific analysis should be utilized in studies of PTOA., (© 2021 Orthopaedic Research Society. Phytostabilization of mine soils contaminated by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) requires plants tolerant to PTE toxicity and to the poor soil physico-chemical characteristics of these areas. A pot experiment was carried out to assess the phytostabilization potential of Brassica juncea and Dactylis glomerata in mine soils amended with compost and biochar. Furthermore, the Environmental Risk of the soils and the effects of the phytostabilization process on the microbiological population size and activity in the soils were also determined. According to the Ecological Risk Index (ERI) the soils studied presented "very high risk" and As, Cd and Pb were the target elements for phytostabilization. Both amendments improved soil conditions (e.g., increasing total-N and total organic-C concentrations) and contributed to PTE (Cd, Pb and Zn) immobilization in the soil. Compost showed a more marked effect on soil microbial biomass and nutrients release in soil, which led to higher B. juncea and D. glomerata biomass in compost treated soils. Biochar treatment showed a positive effect only on D. glomerata growth, despite it provoked strong PTE immobilization in both soils. The addition of both amendments resulted in an overall reduction of PTE concentration in the plants compared to the control treatment. In addition, both plant species showed higher accumulation of PTE in the roots than in the shoots (transfer factor<1) independently of the treatment received. The long-term use of Cu-based fungicides at doses of several kilograms per hectare stimulated a wide debate about the human health and environmental risks of the progressive accumulation of Cu in agricultural soils. Here, the health risks due to copper accumulation in agricultural soils were evaluated with a survey in intensive agricultural land of the Campania region (Italy), aiming to evaluate Cu accumulation in food crops. The health risk due to dietary exposure was estimated by using the Hazard Quotient (HQ), calculated as the ratio between the average daily dose and the reference dose of copper, suggesting that when HQ > 1 there is a potential risk for consumers. According to a survey of soils with a Cu content up to 217 mg kg -1 , no foodstuffs showed dietary risks. Nevertheless, the contribution of Cu contained in these foodstuffs to the overall intake of Cu by consumers could increase health risks since such risks must be evaluated on the basis of the whole standard diet by quantifying the Cu content not only in vegetables and fruits but also in other sources, such as cereals, not cultivated in the study area and thus not considered in this paper. The environmental risks due to copper accumulation in agricultural soils were then evaluated with a field experiment in a soil characterized by a very high Cu concentration (up to 1700 mg kg -1 ), aiming to study the impacts of Cu on native soil microorganisms. The study of the microbiota highlighted that the presence of Cu in soil did not reduce the total richness and diversity of microorganisms, which were not related to increasing concentrations of Cu in the soil. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) have been reported to increase phosphate (P) content and plant growth. Their application in agricultural systems is an eco-friendly alternative strategy for limiting negative environmental impact of chemical fertilizers and increasing costs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to isolate and characterize new putative PSB to use as inoculum to enhance plant growth and increase P bioavailability in soil. Sixteen bacteria were isolated from Moroccan oat rhizosphere and were screened for their putative P-solubilization by semi-quantitative agar spot method. The two strains MS1B15 and MS1B13, identified as Streptomyces roseocinereus and Streptomyces natalensis , respectively, showed the maximum phosphate solubilization index (PSI = 1.75 and PSI = 1.63). After quantitative assay to determine phosphate solubilization activity, S. roseocinereus MS1B15 was selected for evaluating its putative plant growth promotion activities including production of siderophores, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, nitrogen fixation and antimicrobial activity against soil-borne plant pathogens. Under greenhouse condition, barley plants inoculated with S. roseocinereus MS1B15 significantly increased shoot and ear length as well as available phosphorus in ears and leaves and P and N contents in the soil. Combined injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus is associated with earlier onset and increased rates of post-traumatic osteoarthritis compared with isolated ACL injury. However, little is known about the initial changes in joint structure associated with these different types of trauma. We hypothesized that trauma to the ACL and lateral meniscus has an immediate effect on morphometry of the articular cartilage and meniscus about the entire tibial plateau that is more pronounced than an ACL tear without meniscus injury. Subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning soon after injury and prior to surgery. Those that suffered injury to the ACL and lateral meniscus underwent changes in the lateral compartment (increases in the posterior-inferior directed slopes of the articular cartilage surface, and the wedge angle of the posterior horn of the meniscus) and medial compartment (the cartilage-to-bone height decreased in the region located under the posterior horn of the meniscus, and the thickness of cartilage increased and decreased in the mid and posterior regions of the plateau, respectively). Subjects that suffered an isolated ACL tear did not undergo the same magnitude of change to these articular structures. A majority of the changes in morphometry occurred in the lateral compartment of the knee; however, change in the medial compartment of the knee with a normal appearing meniscus also occurred. Statement of clinical significance: Knee injuries that involve combined trauma to the ACL and meniscus directly affect both compartments of the knee, even if the meniscus and articular cartilage appears normal upon arthroscopic examination. © 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society. Metal uptake capacity and growth patterns of three cardoon cultivars (Sardo, Siciliano, and Spagnolo) were investigated for phytoremediation in a metal-contaminated soil. Metal concentrations after one and two growth rounds were measured in soil and plants by ICP-MS. Potentially and promptly available metal fractions were estimated by EDTA and ammonium nitrate. Plant weight, water and nitrogen content, and life span were considered as growth parameters. After the first growth cycle, a significant accumulation of all elements was observed in roots, whereas only Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Sb were significantly translocated to the shoots. After the second growth cycle, a further significant increase, especially in roots, was observed in all cultivars and for all elements considered. High percentages of the potentially available fraction were found for As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Sb. Metal concentrations in plants were far higher than the promptly available fraction, indicating an increase of metal bioavailability during culture rounds. A severe decrease of weight and life span was observed in Sardo and Siciliano grown on polluted soil, along with an increase in N content. The cultivar Spagnolo, harmonizing a high ability of metal uptake and tolerance, proved the most efficient cultivar in metal phytoremediation.

Wearable sensor-based algorithms for estimating joint angles have seen great improvements in recent years. While the knee joint has garnered most of the attention in this area, algorithms for estimating hip joint angles are less available. Herein, we propose and validate a novel algorithm for this purpose with innovations in sensor-to-sensor orientation and sensor-to-segment alignment. The proposed approach is robust to sensor placement and does not require specific calibration motions. The accuracy of the proposed approach is established relative to optical motion capture and compared to existing methods for estimating relative orientation, hip joint angles, and range of motion (ROM) during a task designed to exercise the full hip range of motion (ROM) and fast walking using root mean square error (RMSE) and regression analysis. The RMSE of the proposed approach was less than that for existing methods when estimating sensor orientation ( 12 . 32 ∘ and 11 . 82 ∘ vs. 24 . 61 ∘ and 23 . 76 ∘ ) and flexion/extension joint angles ( 7 . 88 ∘ and 8 . 62 ∘ vs. 14 . 14 ∘ and 15 . 64 ∘ ). Also, ROM estimation error was less than 2 . 2 ∘ during the walking trial using the proposed method. These results suggest the proposed approach presents an improvement to existing methods and provides a promising technique for remote monitoring of hip joint angles.

The risks for human health and the ecosystem due to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) were investigated in a farmland classified as potentially contaminated by Cr and Zn by analysing native vegetation and relative rhizo-soils. Rhizo-soils of different plant species were found to be enriched by Cr and Zn as well as by elements omitted from official environmental characterization, namely Cd, As and Pb. The ecological risk index (ERI) had a mean value of 510, indicating high to "very high" risk in different habitats. ERI above the very high risk threshold characterized the rhizo-soils of Lolium perenne, Erigeron sumatrensis, Oloptum thomasii and Amaranthus retroflexus. Two of these plant species (E. sumatrensis and A. retroflexus) are exotic in Italy and accumulated Cd in the shoots above the EU threshold for forage, suggesting a potential risk of Cd transfer to the food chain. Hence, this element was found to contribute most to the ERI. Cynodon dactylon was recognized as the most suitable plant species for the phytostabilization of the contaminated site, as it showed the highest bioavailable Cd accumulation in roots coupled with the highest frequency and soil-cover capacity during spring-summer, when the risk of soil resuspension is generally more intense., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The post-treatment of biomass from phytoremediation is not yet a well-established practice due to the risk induced by the presence of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs). Pyrolysis is a thermochemical treatment that reduces the volume and weight of contaminated matter producing a combustible vapor phase and a solid residue (char). A key factor enhancing the economic and the environmental sustainability of biomass valorization through pyrolysis is the production of a market value char. A proper choice of the pyrolysis operating conditions should take into account the effect of final temperature on PTEs release, on the char physicochemical properties as well as on the mobility of retained PTEs. In particular, in this work the influence of both the temperature and the plant parts is discussed (branches and leaves of Populus Nigra L. and rhizomes and culms of Arundo donax L.) on the release of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the temperature range 653-873 K under steam assisted slow pyrolysis conditions. The mobility of the heavy metals retained in the chars was also studied as well as the product yields, the gas composition and char porosity. The results suggested that in presence of Cd it is necessary to operate at low-temperature (lower than 703 K) to obtain a heavy metals free vapor phase fuel, whereas in presence of one or more metals among Pb, Cu, and Zn, it is possible to conduct a pyrolytic treatment at higher temperatures, thus obtaining a char with high BET surface area and lower metals mobility., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
