The complex formation of thiamonomethine cyanine dyes bearing two N-ammoniohexyl or two N-ethyl substituents with cucurbit[5,7]urils (CB[5,7]) in aqueous solutions was studied by electronic and 1H NMR spectroscopy, including spectrophotometric, fluorescence, and 1H NMR titration methods. It was found that CB[5] forms external complexes with the dyes, while CB[7] forms internal (inclusion) complexes of 1:1 and 1(dye):2(CB[5,7]) composition. The complexation with CB[5,7] changes the absorption spectra of cyanine dyes and induces a considerable fluorescence enhancement. The stability constants of the complexes were determined (logK1:1 varies in the range from 3.53 to more than 6, and logK1:2 varies in the range from 3.5 to 4.32). The dye with ammoniohexyl substituents forms more stable complexes owing to hydrogen bond formation between the NH3+ groups and the carbonyl groups of the CB[5,7] portals. The structure of supramolecular complexes was confirmed by quantum chemical calculations.

The reaction of tetraethyl [1,3-phenylenedi(methylene)]bis(phosphonate) with formyl derivatives of benzocrown-ethers or formyl derivatives of o-dimethoxybenzene lead to high yield formation of the respectful bis(crown ether) containing 1,3-distyrylbenzenes or tetramethoxy-substituted 1,3-distyrenebenzenes. NMR spectra and quantum-chemical calculations showed the prevalence of unsymmetrical syn/anti,(syn,anti),syn/anti-conformations in 1,3-distyrylbenzenes. 1,3-Distyrylbenzenes absorb in shorter wavelength spectral region and have a weaker fluorescence than 1,4-distyrylbenzenes. The difficulty in the electrochemical reduction of 1,3-distyrylbenzenes comparing with 1,4-distyrylbenzenes is due to a less effective conjugation system in the metaderivatives.

An improved method for the synthesis of two symmetric biscrown-containing and one model tetramethoxy-substituted 1,4-distyrylbenzenes was suggested. The structures of compounds were established by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Spectrophotometric and fluorescent titration were used to determine spectral properties, stoichiometry, and stability of complexes of biscrown-containing 1,4-distyrylbenzenes with alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations. The stability of the complexes was found to depend on the metal cation size and charge, as well as on the size of the crown ether fragment. The electrochemical oxidation and reduction potentials of the biscrown-containing 1,4-distyrylbenzenes and the model compound in solution were determined and their basic differences from the corresponding characteristics of biscrown-containing stilbenes were identified.

Dienones (ketocyanine dyes) containing two aza-18-crown-6 ether residues were synthesized. The complex formation of these dyes with the EtNH3+ and +H3N(CH2)nNH3+ ions (n = 2–10, 12) in MeCN was studied by electronic and 1H NMR spectroscopy, including spectrophotometric and 1H NMR titration. It was found that homoditopic bis-azacrown dienones and alkanediammonium ions with a short polymethylene chain form 1:1, 2:2, and 1:2 complexes, whereas alkanediammonium ions with a long polymethylene chain form only pseudocyclic 1:1 complexes. The stability constants of the resulting complexes were determined (logK1:1 varies in the range from 2.74 to 5.62 [M–1], logK2:2 = 2.1 [M–1], and logK1:2 varies in the range from 2.03 to 2.96 [M–1]). The most stable complexes are formed by diammonium ions with a long polymethylene chain owing to simultaneous binding of both NH3+ groups to the azacrown ether residues of the dye. The structure of supramolecular complexes was confirmed by quantum chemical calculations.

New NIR emitting materials were found among the lanthanide complexes with 2-(tosylamino)benzylidene-N-benzoylhydrazone. Complexes of Nd(3+), Er(3+) and Yb(3+), as well as Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Lu(3+), were synthesized for the first time. Owing to the absence of vibration quenching the ytterbium complex was found to exhibit a photoluminescence quantum yield of 1.4%. Since the sensitization efficiency was calculated to be 55%, the losses in the quantum yield are probably due to Yb-Yb resonant energy transfer.

Novel 2-benzothiazole-, 4-pyridine-, and 2- and 4-quinoline-based styryl dyes containing an N-methylbenzoaza-15(18)-crown-5(6)-ether moiety were synthesized. A detailed electronic spectroscopy study revealed high performance of these compounds as optical molecular sensors for alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations. They were shown to considerably surpass analogous chromoionophores based on N-phenylaza-crown ethers regarding both the ionochromism and the cation-binding ability. In addition, they act as fluorescent sensors for the metal cations by demonstrating cation-triggered emission. Upon complexation with Ba(2+), the fluorescence enhancement factor reaches 61. The structural features of dyes and their metal complexes were studied by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The high degree of macrocycle preorganization was found to be one of the factors determining the high cation-binding ability of the sensor molecules based on N-methylbenzoaza-crown ethers.

A number of N-alkyl(nitrobenzo)aza-18-crowns-6 in which the nitrogen atom in the macroring is conjugated with the benzene ring were synthesized, and their complexing power was compared with that of model nitro derivatives of benzo-18-crown-6 and N-phenylaza-18-crown-6 using 1H NMR spectroscopy and DFT/PBE quantum-chemical calculations. The stability constants of the complexes formed by crown ethers with NH4/+, EtNH3/+, Li+, Na+, and K+ in CD3CN were determined by 1H NMR titration. The complexing power of N-alkyl(nitrobenzo)aza-18-crowns-6 toward metal and ammonium cation was considerably higher than that of N-(4-nitrophenyl)aza-18-crown-6 and N-alkyl(nitrobenzo)aza-15-crown-5 and was comparable or higher than that of nitrobenzo-18-crown-6.

Mono-, tri-, and pentamethine cyanine dyes containing two terminal ammonium groups in the N-substituents and bis(18-crown-6)- stilbene in MeCN form pseudocyclic 1:1 complexes (log K 1:1 up to 8.1) and triple-decker 1:2 complexes (log K 1:2 up to 2.6).

Reactions of 1-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)pyridinium chloride and 2-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)isoquinolinium chloride with 2,3-dimethylbenzothiazolium iodide in hot pyridine allows introduction of an aryl residue into the thiazole ring via intermolecular transformation of the pyridine ring of Zincke’s salts with participation of the methyl group in position 2 of the benzothiazolium salt.

A number of N-alkylnitrobenzoaza-15-crown-5 with the macrocycle N atom conjugated with the benzene ring were obtained. The structural and complexing properties of these compounds were compared with those of model nitrobenzo- and N-(4-nitrophenyl)aza-15-crown-5 using X-ray diffraction, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The macrocyclic N atom of benzoazacrown ethers are characterized by a considerable contribution of the sp3-hybridized state and a pronounced pyramidal geometry; the crownlike conformation of the macrocycle is preorganized for cation binding, which facilitates complexation. The stability constants of the complexes of crown ethers with the NH4 +, EtNH3 +, Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Ba2+ ions were determined by 1H NMR titration in MeCN-d3. The most stable complexes were obtained with alkaline-earth metal cations, which is due to the higher charge density at these cations. The characteristics of the complexing ability of N-alkylnitrobenzoaza-15-crown-5 toward alkaline earth metal cations are comparable with analogous characteristics of nitrobenzo-15-crown-5 and are much better than those of N-(4-nitrophenyl)aza-15-crown-5.

Benzoaza-15-crown-5 ethers containing one or two nitrogen atoms in different positions of the macrocycle and bearing different substituents at these atoms were synthesized. The structures of azacrown ethers and their metal complexes were studied by X-ray diffraction. The stability constants of the complexes of azacrown ethers with Na+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Ag+, Pb2+, and EtNH3+ ions were determined by 1H NMR titration in MeCN-d3. In free benzoazacrown ethers containing secondary nitrogen atoms bound to the benzene ring, as well as in N-acetyl derivatives, the N atoms are sp2-hybridized and have a planar geometry. The nitrogen lone pairs on the p orbitals are efficiently conjugated to the benzene ring or the carbonyl fragment of the acetyl group, which is unfavorable for the complex formation. In addition, the formation of complexes with benzoazacrown ethers containing secondary nitrogen atoms is hindered because the hydrogen atoms of the NH groups are directed to the center of the macrocyclic cavity. In benzoazacrown ethers bearing N-alkyl substituents or secondary nitrogen atoms distant from the benzene ring, the N atoms show a substantial contribution of the sp3-hybridized state and have a pronounced pyramidal configuration, which promotes the complex formation. The lead and calcium cations form the most stable complexes due to the high affinity of Pb2+ ions for O,N-containing ligands, a high charge density on these ions, and the better correspondence of the cavity size of the 15-membered macrocycles to the diameter of the Ca2+ ion. An increase in the stability of the complexes is observed mainly in going from monoazacrown ethers to diazacrown ethers containing identical substituents at the N atoms and in the following series of substituents: C(O)Me < H < Me < CH2CO2Et. In the case of the CH2CO2Et substituents, the carbonyl oxygen atom is also involved in the coordination to the cation. The characteristic features of the complexing ability of N-alkylbenzomonoaza-15-crown-5 ethers bearing the nitrogen atom conjugated to the benzene ring show that macro-cyclic ligands having this structure are promising as selective and efficient complexing agents for metal cations.

An improved method for the synthesis of formyl derivatives of N-methylbenzoazacrown ethers is proposed. They are prepared in up to 68% yields over fewer steps and with a much shorter time required for the last step. The stability constants of complexes formed by N-methylbenzoazacrown ethers and their structural analogs with alkali metal, alkaline-earth metal and ammonium cations were determined by 1H NMR titration in CD3CN. High stability of complexes of N-methyl derivatives of benzoazacrown ethers is demonstrated, comparable with or even exceeding the stability of benzocrown-ether complexes and markedly exceeding the stability of complexes of phenylazacrown ethers with the same macrocycle size. The structures of azacrown ethers and their complexes with Ba(ClO4)2 were studied by X-ray diffraction. A high degree of pre-organization of N-methylbenzoazacrown ethers toward the formation of complexes with metal and ammonium cations was noted, which is due to the clear-cut pyramidal geometry of the nitrogen atom and the orientation of the lone electron pairs (LEPs) of most heteroatoms towards the centre of the macroheterocycle. Dependence of reactivity on substituents in the pyridine ring of the 4-methylpyridinium salts was studied in intermolecular reaction of ring transformation involving quaternary salts of pyridinium and isoquinolinium promoted by methylammonium sulfite.

A cyclization of azapodand haloderivatives into nitrobenzoazacrown ethers under treatment with various bases and in their absence was investigated. The nitrobenzoazacrown ethers obtained and their complexes with metal cations were studied by X-ray diffraction method and by 1H NMR titration. In nitrobenzoaza-15-crown-5 a capability to complex Ca2+ cation was found that significantly exceeded similar ability of nitrobenzocrown ether with the same size of the macroring.

Reactions of pyridinium salts or nonquaternized pyridine with 4-methylpyridinium salts in the presence of methylammonium sulfite in aqueous methylamine afford 4-phenylpyridine in 29—57% yields. The probable mechanism of ring transformation in simplest pyridine derivatives under the action of nucleophiles is discussed.

New phosphoramidite reagent 7 suitable for incorporation of dC analogue was synthesized. ODNs containing diazaphenoxaziione residues in defined positions were prepared. The stability of duplexes formed was increased up to 3-5°C per modified base. Preliminary results of molecular biological testing were reported. A series of palladium(II) complexes with nitro- and formylbenzothiacrown-ether derivatives was synthesized. The spatial structure of the complexes was studied by NMR, X-ray diffraction analysis, and quantum chemical calculations (density functional theory). The cavity size and the ligand denticity were found to be crucial factors determining the geometric configuration of the thiacrown-ether complexes. Palladium(II) complexes with benzodithia-12(18)-crown-4(6) ethers were demonstrated to have a cis-configured S(2)PdY(2) fragment (Y = Cl, OAc). In the case of Pd(II) and benzodithia-21-crown-7 ethers, only complexes with a trans configuration of the S(2)PdY(2) fragment form. In the case of Pd(II) and nitrobenzomonothia-15-crown-5 ether, only 2(ligand):1(Pd) complex with trans configuration of the core fragment forms.
