This paper analyzes the precision bounds of ranging (via time-of-arrival estimation) with OFDM signals and proposes methods for the co-design of OFDM waveforms meeting both ranging and communication goals. First, it presents a method for obtaining an upper bound for the channel capacity and a lower bound for the ranging variance of an OFDM system as a function of the OFDM parameters and channel model. Next, it introduces an analysis tool that implements this method, allowing for numerical computation of the capacity and ranging variance bounds from OFDM parameters. Finally, it presents a general analysis of the trade-offs associated with varying each OFDM parameter with respect to channel capacity and ranging variance.

Recovery has emerged as an important paradigm in addictions treatment but the field has yet to achieve consensus on how it should be defined and measured. The recovery construct has been extended beyond sustained reductions in use or abstinence to enhancements in global health/well-being and also prosocial community reintegration. However, few studies have included these broader domains in their measurement of recovery and few scientific theories have been advanced to explain why reductions in substance use occasion these broader life changes. This article applies life history theory to recovery for the first time to help define recovery, advance recovery measurement, and explain why broad change across multiple life domains should facilitate sustained recovery progress. We conclude with a discussion of future directions and challenges for future research informed by our life history framework for recovery.

A joint research programme currently being undertaken at Coventry University and the University of the West of England, Bristol, is concerned with developing a useful tool, for the novice or expert designer, which directly supports the conceptual design generation process in the field of mechanical device design. The COnceptual Design ASsistant (CODAS) achieves this by utilising knowledge of past successful solutions and then generating new devices, which can be either novel or routine, that are functionally capable of satisfying the stated device requirements. Case Based Reasoning (CBR) technology is used to store and retrieve past design solutions which are defined in terms of a symbolic representation language. The underlying design model is function based and employs a divergent function to form mapping technique to produce physical embodiments of the proposed functional solutions. The technique has been developed in the field of mechanical device design and is now being developed for use in the prosthetic design field.

Diversity and inclusion in Kinesiology is needed to ensure the future professionals of tomorrow engage in recognizing the shared fabric of science and inquiry. Initiatives targeting inclusion and diversity have shown promise in bridging the existing gap. Vital to this process is the role of faculty, administrators and students in providing academic support and paracurricular exposure to the field of Kinesiology. Historical perspectives and knowledge of best practices shape the conversation regarding innovative 21st century options deemed necessary for meeting this challenge. Our review describes programs that strengthen the preparedness of undergraduate students. In addition, we outline existing strategies leading to effective partnerships between undergraduate and graduate institutions. Diversity and inclusion are integral to the achievement of excellence and enhance each institution's ability to accomplish its academic mission and to serve its constituents.

BaBar detector at SLAC - Abstract
We perform a Dalitz plot analysis of about 100 000 Ds+ decays to K+K-π+ and measure the complex amplitudes of the intermediate resonances which contribute to this decay mode. We also measure the relative branching fractions of Ds+→K+K+π- and Ds+→K+K+K-. For this analysis we use a 384 fb-1 data sample, recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider running at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV.

BaBar detector at SLAC - Abstract
Using a sample of 122×106 Υ(3S) events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the hb(1P) spin-singlet partner of the P-wave χbJ(1P) states in the sequential decay Υ(3S)→π0hb(1P), hb(1P)→γηb(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the π0 at mass 9902±4(stat)±2(syst) MeV/c2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.1σ, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (4.3±1.1(stat)±0.9(syst))×10-4 for the product branching fraction B(Υ(3S)→π0hb)×B(hb→γηb).

BaBar detector at SLAC - Abstract
We study the processes γγ→KS0K±π∓ and γγ→K+K-π+π-π0 using a data sample of 519.2fb-1 recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(nS) (n=2, 3, 4) resonances. We observe the ηc(1S), χc0(1P) and ηc(2S) resonances produced in two-photon interactions and decaying to K+K-π+π-π0, with significances of 18.1, 5.4 and 5.3 standard deviations (including systematic errors), respectively, and report 4.0σ evidence of the χc2(1P) decay to this final state. We measure the ηc(2S) mass and width in KS0K±π∓ decays, and obtain the values m(ηc(2S))=3638.5±1.5±0.8 MeV/c2 and Γ(ηc(2S))=13.4±4.6±3.2 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We measure the two-photon width times branching fraction for the reported resonance signals, and search for the χc2(2P) resonance, but no significant signal is observed.

We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B+→η(′)ℓ+ν and B0→π-ℓ+ν, undertaken with approximately 464×106 BB̄ pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions for B+→ηℓ+ν and B0→π-ℓ+ν decays in three and 12 bins of q2, respectively, from which we extract the f+(q2) form-factor shapes and the total branching fractions B(B+→ηℓ +ν)=(0.36±0.05stat±0.04 syst)×10-4 and B(B0→π -ℓ+ν)=(1.42±0.05stat±0. 07syst)×10-4. We also measure B(B +→η′ℓ+ν)=(0.24±0. 08stat±0.03syst)×10-4. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element |Vub| using three different QCD calculations.

We report on a search for CP violation in the decay D±→KS0π± using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469 fb-1 collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- storage rings. The CP-violating decay rate asymmetry ACP is determined to be (-0.44±0.13(stat)±0.10(syst))%, consistent with zero at 2.7σ and with the standard model prediction of (-0.332±0.006)%. This is currently the most precise measurement of this parameter.

The article describes a computerised approach to the prediction of blank shapes for arbitrarily shaped components which have doubly-curved surfaces. Blank shapes can be developed rapidly using a standard personal computer. In this work, an industrial component has been modelled by a CAD program, its geometric data exported to a special purpose program (DYNSRF) and then its blank shape was predicted. The predicted results were found to be in good accordance with the real blank shape geometry.

The adoption of knowledge-based systems (KBS) technology into engineering design presents a massive opportunity to companies in search of new ways to improve their product introduction process (PIP). However, past experience has shown that such promise has not been realized in the adoption of expert systems technology. The failure of the introduction of KBS technology under the banner of expert systems can frequently be attributed to the inappropriate selection of suitable applications. Despite these past experiences, history seems poised to repeat itself with the adoption of knowledge-based engineering (KBE) technology within the product development process. Therefore, the ability to identify ‘winner’ applications would be of considerable benefit. This paper outlines the consolidation of past experience relating to KBS development and outlines a method for the selection of suitable KBE design applications.

SUMMARY This paper discusses an approach to programming computers to expand their use within the design function, using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The design process is discussed, along with the type of problems encountered and the attributes required of the designer for the solution of such problems. AI programming techniques are introduced as an extension to the field of computer-aided design (CAD) and the case for automatic design is presented. The design process is considered in terms of the theoretical model which is used as a basis for programming automatic design systems. A simple demonstration of the approach is given in the form of the selection of a solution principle for a pump problem and the development of that solution into a functional unit by design rules. A central theme of the method is the iterative use of the model, illustrating the concept at all levels of design decision-making.

SUMMARY This paper presents an algorithmic approach to solving the problem of excessive travel in machine tools, by efficiently computing the shortest path between given sets of points (origin and destination) in R2 (x, y) plane. When a workpiece is located (as an obstacle) between sets of points, it is proved that the optimum path between these points would be formed by sequences of connected straight line segments whose intermediate end points are vertices of an appropriate polygonal (closed control barrier). The case of one origin, one destination, and a set of barriers is considered.

Computer based tools have greatly influenced design in the areas of drafting, databases and analysis, but little progress has been made in developing useful tools to aid conceptual design. A joint research programme currently being undertaken at Coventry University and the University of the West of England, Bristol, is concerned with developing a useful tool, for the novice or expert designer, which directly supports the conceptual design generation process in the field of mechanical device design. The COnceptual Design ASsistant (CODAS) achieves this by utilising knowledge of past successful solutions and then generating new devices, which can be either novel or routine, that are functionally capable of satisfying the stated device requirements. Fast and efficient data handling is achieved by utilising Case Based Reasoning (CBR) technology to store and retrieve past design solutions which are defined in terms of a symbolic representation language. The underlying design model is function based and employs a divergent function to form mapping technique to produce physical embodiments of the proposed functional solutions.

This paper is intended as an overview of the research carried out at Coventry University in the design of a portable artificial kidney system. It was seen that the key to the problem was the reduction in dialysate volume, and so it was decided to develop a prototype that would utilize the regeneration and recirculation of a small volume of dialysate. A prototype system has been produced and used to simulate a dialysis session. Activated carbon was used as a sorbent for the regeneration of the dialysate, circulating in a closed loop. For the purpose of this work, the adsorption of urea was investigated as this is, volumetrically, the major solute to be removed. Peltier effect cooling was used to vary the dialysate temperature down to 2 °C, as activated carbon will adsorb greater amounts of urea at lower temperatures. A series of tests was then carried out to investigate the effect of dialysate temperature, flowrate and volume on the amount of urea that could be dialysed. From the experimental results, a model of the system was derived, which made it possible to determine the implications of different operating conditions on the overall mass and size of a portable dialysis system. The output of this model was then used to establish a design specification and produce an optimum design solution for the system.

One of the important tools for speeding up the prototyping of an new industrial or consumer product is the rapid generation of CAD data from hand-made styling models and moulds. We present a new optical 3D digitizing system which produces in a fully automatic way non- ambiguous, absolute and complete surface coordinate data of very complex objects in a short time. The system named `OptoShape' is based on a projection of sinusoidal fringes with a true grey-level matrix projector. The system measures both non-ambiguous and absolute XYZ surface data with a pronounced robustness towards optical surface properties. By moving the 3D sensor head around the object to be digitized with a 3/5 axes manipulator, multiple range images are obtained and automatically merged into a unified cloud of point coordinates. This set of surface coordinates are transferred to a software package where interactive manipulation, sectioning and semi-automatic generation of CAD surface descriptions are performed. Collision detection in multi-axis turning is problematic to simulate. Methods are discussed, concluding that four-dimensional techniques are best. A simulation system that has been developed and tested forms the principal subject of the paper. A geometric modeller called Robmod was used as the geometry engine, enhanced by a method to model and detect collisions between simultaneous rotational motion of two objects. To test the simulation a part program processor was developed that converts the blocks from a paper tape into commands to manipulate a model of the lathe.

Cyclic voltammetry has been used to study the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics of horse heart cytochrome c in pH 7 tris/cacodylate media at several electrode surfaces. Reversible voltammetric responses (formal heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant>10−2 cm/s) were observed at bare gold electrodes and at tin-doped indium oxide semiconductor electrodes for certain experimental conditions. Quasireversible voltammetric responses were more typically observed at fluorine-doped tin oxide semiconductor electrodes, bare platinum electrodes, and at the indium oxide electrodes. Reaction rates at bare metal electrodes were strongly dependent on pretreatment procedures and experimental protocol. Reaction rates at metal oxide electrodes were strongly dependent on solution conditions, pretreatment procedures, and on the hydration state of the electrode surface. A general mechanistic scheme involving both interfacial electrostatic and chemical interactions is proposed for cytochrome c electrode reactions. The asymmetric distribution of surface charges on cytochrome c appears to play a dominant role in controlling electron transfer rates by its interaction with the electric field at the electrode surface. Electron transfer distances are also considered, and it is concluded that electron transfer between an electrode surface and the exposed heme edge of properly oriented cytochrome c molecules involves maximum distances of ca. 0.6–0.9 nm.

Summary The product of the anodic pyridination of 9,10-diphenylanthracene at a platinum electrode in acetonitrile has been isolated and characterized as 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diphenyl-9,10-dipyridiniumanthracene diperchlorate. Macroscale electrolyses using tetraethylammonium perchlorate as the supporting electrolyte gave rise to a mixed product comprised of the titled compound and the corresponding triethylamine adduct. The source of the triethyl amine was found to be the cathodic discharge of the cation of the supporting electrolyte. A reversible equilibrium was shown to exist between 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diphenyl-9,10-dipyridiniumanthracene diperchlorate and 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diphenyl-9,10-di(triethyl)ammoniumanthracene diperchlorate.

A Fortran program which controls the position, orientation, attitude and limb position of a geometric model of the human form is described. Data is generated by the program for the model definition using either classical anthropomorphic data or user supplied information (which may be used for deformities, disabilities and other nonstandard cases). The program may then be used to control any geometric model of the body. As an application example, a CSG model is used for seating studies in a vehicle.

Optimization techniques are applied to the design of both hydrodynamic journal and tilting pad thrust bearings. Fletcher's adaptation of Davidon's gradient search method is further modified to deal with non-linear constraints in journal bearing design. A form of the Sequential Simplex is used for tilting pad thrust bearings. Penalty functions and variable transformations are used in both cases. Composite objective functions are included and the effect of weighting on each component of the composite function is investigated.

An overview of applications of spin trapping to electrochemical investigations is presented. Cited studies include characterizations of primary electrode reaction products (e.g., electrooxidations of hal.ide and pseudohalide species, electroreduction of N-methylpyridinium ion) as well as the identification of transient intermediates arising from homogeneous reactions which are electroinitiated. The validity of spatially resolved spin trapping as a probe in the investigation of interfacial processes is demonstrated with examples drawn both from the previously reported co valent attachment of nitrone derived spin traps to silaceous surfaces and from recent studies of spin trapping in micelle and vesicle systems. Amphiphilic nitrone spin traps have been shown to coassemble with both micelles and vesicles such that the nitrone functionality resides in the interfacial region of the ordered system. The ability of these interfacially localized nitrones to trap transient radicals generated both in the hydrophobic domain of the micelle or vesicle and in the aqueous exterior domain is demonstrated.
